Negative experience: Avoid! *A good chunk of the exercise machines are frequently out of order. Every time I raise this all I get back is negative attitude. *At the time of writing (4 March 2025) the front door of the building is nailed shut due to a malfunction and has been so for over a month now. Everybody has to filter through the small accessible entrance. *The showers in the men's changing rooms often smell like an open sewer line, with mould collecting in the shower cubicles. *Some of the staff are friendly but unable to actually solve any problems, whilst others just give you attitude, like petulant teenagers. *Customer service is laughable. I tried to switch Nuffield sites via email (there is no phone number in the member zone/account management section). No response. After following the instructions of the person on the Chingford front desk I attended the new Nuffield site I wanted to switch to and was assured by them that the switchover would be handled by them. A week and a half later I receive a phone call from Nuffield Chingford telling me that I need to pay them despite the fact that I've switched gyms, with a confirmation from the new Nuffield site. It's a mess. Nobody cares. Spend your money elsewhere.

Negative experience: Absolute joke of an establishment. Has the audacity to increase their prices cause they installed a “new boiler” the same new boiler that cannot warm up the pool enough for baby swimming sessions. 30 day notice needed to cancel my membership which is a joke. They can happily and easily breach the contract but god forbid if you want to cancel your membership cause they haven’t met their end of the contract you got to wait 30 days. Save your money and go elsewhere. Rude and incompetent staff that also have no clue what they’re doing. Needs a complete refurb from management to the actual facility. I’d give it 0 stars if I could

Negative experience: If you have clicked on the reviews to decide if you should take out membership. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DON’T. I feel compelled to share my ongoing frustration with the Nuffield Health Chingford branch. The gym recently boasted about having new boilers fitted, which was meant to address previous issues with hot water. However, within just a few weeks of installation, hot water has once again become intermittent, leaving members to deal with the same problem they’ve faced before. To make matters worse, more than a year now the jacuzzi has been closed down, leaving only one active, and the shower cubicles consistently smell of urine. It's incredibly disappointing to see such poor maintenance and hygiene, especially considering the gym’s supposed reputation. The lack of professionalism and attention to basic facilities is a joke, and it’s clear that the focus is not on providing a quality experience for members. Yet they still find reasons to increase membership prices. I am happy to say I have cancelled my membership from this ‘supposed gym’

Negative experience: Rude staff as soon as you walk in. Changing room lockers are old and broken. Showers do not work in the changing rooms. Shower area smells of sewage. Swimming pool is very small and not deep at all. The gym is very dull. Steam room and sauna over crouded at 8pm on a Friday full of men. Only good thing is free parking. Very honest review I am not exaggerating anything here. All this for £103 a month thats a big joke. Btw there are no jacuzzi's smarty pants business owners have turned it into a 'cold plunge' to save on bills.

Negative experience: Years now only 1 of 3 jacuzzis working . Poolside often stinks of piss . Over a year of intermittent hot water and they had the cheek to increase our memberships again ! centre management are already aware of many of the issues and complaints and have little empathy and poor attitudes when approached and nothing changes . The entire feedback board they have is negative . Theresa’s (a duty manager apparently) response was “well what do you want us to do close the club ?” She was unapologetic , unsympathetic and answered with the attitude of a moody teenager. I raised it with reception last time and their new PT simply laughed as I walked out ! I feel our complaints need to go direct to head office as club management seem incapable to rectify any issues in a timely manner and staff attitudes are about as palatable as a plate of poo unless your joining or adding another membership to your monthly payments . We cant get a straight answer even the signs that are up state two different issues and time frames . I was treated well when I added a third membership two weeks ago … and then the hot water issues started again and their attitudes do a 360 when you complain . The service at this club and the facilities are POOR . We have had our membership fees increased and the club continues to go down hill . There’s no compensation for members to make up for the disappointment the water issue for example has been ongoing since February it’s one lie after another !! We just have higher membership fees and if we’re lucky a text to tell us the hot waters off . But don’t worry the new reception floor will look lovely honestly sad to see Nuffield health go down hill so much in the last two years . Images below prove the issue with water being given different excuses and all the images were all taken on the day u can imagine by the time I got the no hot water text AGAIN that day I’d just had enough .. and that’s only when they bother sending them out !

Negative experience: Bit of a crap gym really. No day passes and the only way in is if you know someone who goes to it. No tour either , or you pay for a member ship. Doesn’t make sense.

Negative experience: Very disappointing experience. I called to check if I can visit with my mum and we were told on the phone it was ok to use the sauna for the day without being members. When we arrived after travelling far we were not only told we were misinformed but very rudely ignored and told they can’t help us now. Very sad to be treated this way. Will not be becoming members and will be telling all my contacts to stay away

Negative experience: Almost every day a facility in the gym is broken. No sauna, no hot water, then highlight Jacuzzis are not in use only one is avalible to use and the tempreature is tepid at best. Now there are numerous leaks all over the building contributing to the overall badly maintained business. So dissapointed.

Fantastic experience: I have recently joined having converted my work membership. I think the place is fine. The reception staff I find lovely and the machines etc are many and varied. Yes half the rowing machines were out of order last week but now fixed. I think the atmosphere is good. We’re not in Chipping Norton here let’s be realistic. Don’t use the showers as shower at home so can’t comment on changing rooms.

Negative experience: Poor maintenance and cleanliness. The majority of classes are in the morning and there’s a limited number of classes in the evening. All of the classes get booked very quickly by regular customers and are fully booked by 8am the latest, the week before the class itself. The air-con in the gym is lacking and during the recent hot days in July and August I have been in the cycle spin classes where the air-con does not work at all which is not acceptable. Gym equipment is often breaking or out of service which means during busy periods there’s not much option in available equipment. Customers do not receive any communication as to when things will be fixed or things are being looked at. For the price you pay I would not recommend this gym.

Negative experience: Have visited this Nuffield for a few years but the condition is significantly diminishing and the place really needs refurbishment. The staff are friendly and the gym isn’t too busy in the morning but unfortunately there are a number of areas for improvement. They don’t provide towels here which is frustrating when most other Nuffield’s do, the hot water is on and off so you may have to put up with a cold shower! Also there are a number of hygiene issues, although the cleaning staff do their best, due to the age of the facilities it is always a bit dirty, there is mould in the showers which gives off a strong smell, the toilets are almost constantly leaking and there is staining and damage to the walls and floors. I have also found a number of lockers are damaged and broken. The gym has a good amount of equipment but unfortunately a lot of it is in disrepair. Out of the 6 rowing machines 3 of them were out of order. Generally 3-4 resistance machines are out of order. As a final point the aircon barely works and fans are needed in an attempt to cool down the gym area. Not great for the price.

Negative experience: Extremely expensive for what you get. A number of things have been taken away since I joined. Machines dated with poor maintenance, handles missing/bits falling off etc. Anything broken takes (literally) forever to be fixed. Whole place evidently lacks investment (despite the membership cost) and is dated/not clean, especially the pool and changing rooms/showers, vintage wooden lockers/benches and discoloured tiles round the pool with dirt/mould doesn’t cut it. This doesn’t even mention how busy it is either. Other gyms offer much, much better facilities for a fraction of the price. Very rarely ‘treated’ to something new - maybe a new attachment every 7/8 months if lucky. A positive is that a majority of the staff are great. Update: I’ve since left the centre due to a continuation of very poor service, and yet a totally unjustified price increase. So fed up of all the issues at this gym which totally do not justify the price paid per month. Multiple things broken for months at a time, general poor maintenance and upkeep of not just the equipment but the building itself (even the door to enter is broken) , foul smells, could go on with lots more so just left and gone somewhere else which provides so much more for virtually the same price.

Negative experience: Facilities are dated and the showers smell very strongly of damp. To top it all off it seems like there is never any hot water leading to cold showers. And for the price I don’t think this is acceptable

Negative experience: I wish I could give it 0 stars!! - rude staff -hygiene - facilities i.e. jacuzzi and equipment all out of order meaning we pay for nothing My experience was nothing short of a nightmare. The level of service and the condition of the facilities were beyond unacceptable.The staff were absolutely horrible. They displayed a complete lack of professionalism and seemed disinterested in assisting members. It was evident that customer satisfaction was not a priority for them. Of course money is their best interest!! The facilities at Nuffield are in a deplorable state. Many of the machines were broken and out of order, making it impossible to have a proper workout. It is truly frustrating to pay for a service and not be able to use the equipment that is supposed to be available. They have even closed down facilities that we paid for - the jacuzzi, which was advertised as a feature included in the membership, was unavailable without any prior notice or explanation. It is unacceptable to deprive paying members of the amenities they have paid for. Hygiene is a major concern, the showers never seem to work properly, leaving members with no option but to endure a sweaty post-workout experience. The overall cleanliness of the gym is also questionable, with an evident lack of proper cleaning. I was appalled to find the gym INFESTED WITH BUGS, which is not only unhygienic but also poses a health risk. I would NEVER recommend to anyone. Save yourself the frustration and find a gym that values its members and maintains its facilities properly

Negative experience: Impossible to get through to reception on the phone. In person, I have found reception staff to be rude & uninterested in customer service. Changing rooms, particularly showers, are often not very clean. Disappointing. Would not recommend.

Positive experience: Expensive for what you get. The weight machines are in need of updating. The numbers have worn out on the machines and they are rusty. The cardio machines are in much better shape. The pool is great and the cafe is ok, nothing extraordinary. It’s not that busy at most times. The changing rooms are large and clean. My monthly fee was discounted by 30% and is still expensive at £69 pm! I expected better but will continue until late summer. Haven’t tried the classes yet.

Negative experience: Rude receptionists. They don't care for the wellbeing of their members. Denied entry over ONE missed payment despite being a long-time member. Missed payment was as a result of Nuffield breaking their own direct-debit agreement and increasing membership prices multiple times throughout the past year. Every time they raise their membership costs by a £1 every couple months I am inconvenienced with having to re-sign a new mandate.

Negative experience: Worse Nuffield out of all the Nuffields I’ve been too. The weight area is ridiculously tight and small - there’s never an opportunity to use equipment as the whole area is so small. Groups of young teens taking up space just chatting, machines are out of order and in general cleanliness really lacks

Negative experience: DON'T SIGN UP HERE. The showers had barely worked the last year, i signed up November 2023 and it's been mostly just cold water. I was told then when I signed up that the jacuzzi was just waiting for a valve, it's still covered up. And the cleanliness, that's just not there. It's so dirty that it's growing stuff in the showers, it constantly smells like poo in there, today I just had to walk out of there as the smell was so bad, and when you complaint about it, the staff are just rude to you, they just don't give a shit. They set up a meeting with the manager to address the problems, but that's of course at two times when everyone is at work, so it's impossible to get something done, they always blame it on a missing part, what ever that's broken, but they have said the last year 4 times they changed the boilers. And I'm sure the cleaners don't miss parts too clean, so why they're not doing it is a mystery, the hinges inside the showers are supposed to be chrome, they are brown, just because it hasn't been cleaned in years by the look of it, and it's mold everywhere. It should been shut down by the health authorities. And then it's the equipment in the gym, it's always a lot that's broken, to many things to even write down here, and the pool and sauna also stinks as it's so dirty. People pay over 100 pounds for this a month and we have 3 memberships in our family, we just want to get out of it, but that's not easy either. It's not even worth £20,- a month this gym if you can call it a gym. So to shorten it down. It is falling apart, it's dirty, it smells sewage, rude staff and management that really don't care. It's embarrassing.

Negative experience: Have used this gym for a number of years but today has been the worst. We live in 2024 where everything is instant. There is currently no hot water in this gym and this is disgraceful. We live at a time when you can get an engineer in within the hour and fix issues. I don’t understand how it is acceptable to be with no hot running water? The showers are filthy and stink. The changing room lockers have not been wiped down in a long time, i don’t have to mention the changing room floors or toilets. It is generally an unhygienic environment to be in. Nothing more to say. Just to mention the conditions of the steam room and sauna vary a lot. Generally not the best.

Positive experience: I use a number of Nuffield gyms, some in the city and they are amazing. Admittedly they cost more, however the standards at Chingford are really slipping . It's basic stuff, cleanliness throughout the gym is sub standard, machines are often broken, the air con is really poor. In the summer it doesn't work, the weights area is unbearable. There are no longer paper towels supplied, so people don't wipe kit down and combined with the fact the gym is mostly boiling hot, it leads to sweaty unhygienic conditions. The claimed reason is being eco friendly, let's be honest it's not, it's to protect margins and profits. The whole gym needs a refit it's in a poor state of repair. The worst part of the place is the toilets, they are always filthy. These issues all really do need addressing. Thanks

Negative experience: REALLY rude receptionist. She had a TERRIBLE attitude. I asked her one question about adult only swims. She told me they don't exist which is completely WRONG INFORMATION. Michelle, the Manager told me they offer adult only swims. I've been there when there's been ADULTS ONLY swimming All I asked was if they offer it over the summer when the kids are off school? She refused to get Michelle to ring me back to answer my question, she talked over me, she interrupted me, she argued with me, she had a terrible attitude, very unprofessional lady, then she hung up on me. She should have asked Michelle, got an answer and rung me back. That's what a normal and professional service would do. All she did was tell me wrong information, argue with me, interrupt me and hang up on me because you couldn't be bothered to ask Michelle for the correct facts. TERRIBLE AND PATHETIC CUSTOMER SERVICE, is that how she was trained to respond to 1 question from her client!!?! She should be ASHAMED at the terrible service she gave She needs to be SACKED.

Negative experience: They are reducing their services, like just one jacuzzi, they even reduced from 3 soap dispensers for 1, by 7pm they turn the lights off in certain areas, they don’t provide around the gym paper anymore, their website is always down when we try to book classes and then it is all already full. The machines and material in general are getting old and outdated. They have put their prices up and the conditions are only getting worse. The only good thing are the classes they have.

Positive experience: As with other reviews, lots of negatives (for the pricing). Firstly, they DO NOT provide gym towels so you’ll have to bring your own if you go to the spa or swim! I’ve never been to any other Nuffield where this is the case - even the Chigwell one provides them! Considering the price you pay I would have thought this was a given. Secondly, they have closed 2 out of the 3 jacuzzis to save money!!!! The whole point of signing up with Nuffield (vs PureGym or The Gym etc) is the jacuzzi and spas yet they barely have this. The one which is open is also not that warm!!! Thirdly, the workout/gym area is relatively small and gets crowded for most things - the leg machines are generally less busy but they only have one machine/platforms. Only reason I go to this Nuffield is that it’s close and that I have multi-gym and use the Nuffield by my work (the Cannon Street Nuffield is really good). Staff is hit and miss - some are nice, others aren’t.

Negative experience: Very rude staff and costumer service is ziro I experienced very racist staff team none was kind first the guy who named team spoke to me on phone with bad attitude couldn’t explain the membership condition and day after tried to joint and buy a membership online couldn’t submit then I called girl who picked the phone name Natalia asked Frankie manager and said he doesn’t have time to help me call back. I call back non picked up phone ,and I went there myself to complete a membership ,then the manager suddenly come up and that’s what happens what a shame ‍♂️I’m a currently a member of leisure center now I know what’s the different thanks for your being nice to new costumers

Negative experience: Very sad to have to cancel my membership to a once great gym. The shutting of the Jacuzzi's had a massive knock on effect that left the sauna and steam rooms overcrowded. The reasons being energy crisis and the world in the state that it is, with excuses that once winter had passed it will turn them on, to now saying they want to be more eco so have shut them completely... And I would have been throughly sympathetic if not for the chef executive getting a huge bonus at the end of it all. The staff have been lovely through it all, and look throughly embarrassed by the way the higher ups have handled the running of this business. Not even been given an answer for members who ask, what will be developed instead? Especially as the membership fee remains the same. They simply had to advise me I could cancel. So I want to thank them for not putting me under any financial burden as I now search for my next gym. I hope the mass exodus of members sways the decision and one day I may return :-)

Positive experience: It is not a bad gym, with few negative points. 1. The classes are taking the weights from free weight area and if you will need a weight 6, 8, 10 or 12 kg good luck. 2. They have nice lockers, but despite these members are leaving their jackets all ower the gym. So nice, pricey and ....

Positive experience: Good gym - lots of mirrors for form. Lots of treadmills, steppers, cross trainers etc in different room. Chigwell Nuffield better though but is a different tier of Nuffield. At least most of the equipment works, unlike the Chigwell gym.

Negative experience: This Gym is on the way down. Maintenance is shoddy to say the least. Gym showers do not work properly. The whole general repair and upkeep is really shoddy. Then they switch off facilities to save power but do not reduce our subscriptions. Nuffield must be going down the tubes. We have been members of this Gym for 15 years but it is getting to the point where I think Nuffield is going bankrupt. I would suggest if at all possible avoid like the plague.

Negative experience: Horrible!! This gym is sooo run down, lockers don’t work, machines have seen better days. It does not justify the extortionate membership prices. I’ve seen better and cleaner budget gyms. It’s in dire need of a refurb and is so depressing inside!!

Fantastic experience: Used to use Bannatynes gym in Chingford until numerous managers just lost their way. The gym was disgusting and maintenance was unheard of. The Nuffield gym is exactly the opposite. The changing rooms are clean and in full repair. All facilities work including the large pool 3 Jacuzzis, sauna and steam room. Not used to this, just waiting 3 months for a repair at Bannatynes. Really enjoying the Nuffield gym and all its excellent facilities.

Negative experience: The Gym is overcrowded, they should put a limit of membership’s. I’m member from 5 year’s but will change it soon. The gym always is extremely busy. Morning’s and evenings. Pool area is not clean.

Negative experience: I booked a tour at 5:30pm today. I was on time in fact 5 minutes early. I was given a form and told to take a seat. Receptionist didnt know who i was seeing. 5:40pm im still waiting! I just walked out. If you cant be bothered to see a potential customer on time it doesnt give me a good first impression and reassurance that you will be any helpful further down the line. Goodbye. Il find a gym that actually cares. What a wasted journey.

Negative experience: Use to be a good gym once upon a time...i only use the gym floor so cannot comment on other aspects. Management seem to be more concerned about getting new members throght the door than preventative maintainance of what is already heavily used/outdated machinery. Six bits of equipment currently down and the gym floor is busier than i have ever seen it. Is time to take action as this place is going downhill

Negative experience: This review is specifically for the swimming pool administration at Nuffield Chingford gym. I am a member of the Chingford Nuffield gym and have a corporate membership too through my company’s Nuffield gym. The Chingford gym is excellent , the staff friendly and the pool and facilities are very nice. However I wanted my daughter to have private swim lessons at the pool( she is 7) and I was told that such lessons are available. I was asked to contact Debbie Lennon( who manages these lessons) and given her email id. I wrote 2 emails to her , left several messages for her at the reception over a period of 2 months, but she did not have the courtesy to reply to them or acknowledge them. When I ask at the reception I am told to contact her again , but it leads to absolutely nothing. No one follows up to see if I have got the service I requested. The reception staff are friendly , but apart from making a note of passing my request to her , they do nothing about it. I am frustrated by this and have given up on the possibility of being able to arrange a lesson at all there for my daughter. What amazes me is the unprofessional behavior in a customer focused organization like Nuffield. It is a shame that a few such people are ruining the reputation of an otherwise excellent gym.

Positive experience: I rejoined having been away for many years . I find little has changed . The staff on reception are friendly and helpful especially Tracy Ozkan, amie R and Tracy O ? I only single them but all the others are friendly and welcoming too.The changing facilities are clean and the showers cleaned very frequently. There is a good variety of classes bookable in advance. All considered it is an enjoyable experience. I am glad I rejoined.

Fantastic experience: I've been a member for a couple of weeks now and I am really delighted with this gym! My first impressions were great when I reached out, the front desk staff are helpful and friendly. The facilities and modern and well maintained. The procedures for cleanliness are clear & easily to follow and there is a really good variety of classes at times that suit me. I also want to commend the quality of the instructors. Well done Nuffield Chingford!

Negative experience: After leaving Nuffield approx. 4 years ago I received an email from Chingford stating my class was booked on the 27th Sept using my email address that should have been unsubscribed years ago. On calling to advise them there was no reply and no answer phone. I worry about data protection and how they send me a booking confirmation using my email years later. Booking ref was 46512732. Please contact me and stop using my personal details.

Negative experience: Went there to have a look around at the gym and ask the Front desk guy for a tour before join and was refused. I was told to look at the pictures available on their website ( their website just got generic stock pictures, come on!) and pay for a membership to be allowed in. With so many reviews pointing the rude staff in this place, I was less than impressed. Waste of time

Fantastic experience: Moved here from Bannatynes - best move I could have made. I have been a member here since November and have no complaints. Compared to the other gym I belonged to, this is by far the cleanest. Staff are friendly here and there are always staff walking about. The steam room always seems to be working here and everything is maintained and cleaned to a high standard. I had reservations about moving because of friends I had made in previous gym. I need not have worried as everyone seems very friendly. There are more afternoon classes here and I am really pleased we changed gyms. The cost is exactly the same as we previously paid because we have insurance underwritten by Aviva. Maybe check your insurance before enrolling here, as it can save you money on monthly fees.

Negative experience: We visited this club on a saturday with the family to use the swimming pool facilities. We have been here before and had no problems. This time, the boy at the reception was very rude and he told us that we can’t use the facilities unless we were members. ( last time we did not had to be members and we were allowed to purchase one day passes). I mean....what would be the reason of not being allowed to use the facilities if you are not a member? We would have still payed...very rude, very unprofessional. So if you want to go to check out this club, don’t go if you are not a member. They will refuse to let you in!

Positive experience: Pretty modern equipment and in good numbers. It can get busy but not so busy that you cannot carry out a workout because of long waiting times. The membership fee is a little expensive and I find the pool is not great for doing actual swimming.

Positive experience: The facility was really clean and well kept. Me and 2 friends went to the Chingford site after hearing news in another site that we were too young to use the gym facilities. After the 2 hour long journey, we arrived to be greeted by a not so friendly receptionist. More bad news came our way as we found out that we were under the age limit despite them telling their colleagues in the previous site of our ages. Despite the lack of communication and poor customer service, the pool,sauna,steam room and jacuzzi were impeccable.

Negative experience: The centre was really nice, however the customer service was not that great. The health centre contacted us saying it was suitable for 16+, however much to our disappointment after a 2 hour long journey they told us we couldn’t go inside. The only incentive was the fact that they allowed us into the pool although one staff member clearly said it was a “one off”. Needless to say I felt humiliated and upset as I not only was told false information but they were not helpful either. I doubt it I would come back again.

Negative experience: I am a member for over 2 years and Unfortunatelly for over these years I seen cardio machines added to gym ,fresh paint in the walls but never ever an updated with the weight machines!!The only thing that I see Weight machines broken and been repaired all the time,the same"OLD WEIGHT MACHINES.Im very desappointed.

Negative experience: No information about opening hours on webstite or frontdoor. Several people came in usual working hours and stayed in cold waiting for opening. Workers seen us but only rudely shut door in front of man trying to get to know what time will be open. That is how you treat your members? Disgusting!!!!

Fantastic experience: One of the better Nuffield gyms. A recent investment in cardio equipment. Spacious jacuzzi and steam room, so even in peak times there's space. More importantly come closing time they don't start kicking you out like some of the other gyms. Only bad point I can think of is weights area could be abit more spacious. But rather have more machines than have to wait around for one.

Positive experience: Nice gym, has everything you need. Only downfall is the hot jacuzzi.. For some reason it isn’t as hot as it should be, or the bubbles only works on one side!

Positive experience: Large gym with ample parking. Good cardio equipment but the free weights area is a smaller than expected. I went mid afternoon where the demograph was much older even than me. Liked the wet areas but not so keen on the ambience, it felt like working out on an office floor.
