Nuffield Health Plymouth Fitness & Wellbeing Gym: Opinions
Fantastic experience: A really great well-equipped gym with good swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Great staff and personal trainers.
Positive experience: I have been coming to Nuffield for years now but I have now left due to the overcrowding , it’s impossible to get on any equipment from about 4.30 onwards until much later in the evening . It’s a shame as I like the gym but I wasn’t getting my workout done .
Fantastic experience: I met Heidi this evening at Nuffield when I went to query about membership at Nuffield gym (Barbican). She is a very welcoming person and very help full, once again thanks Heidi for your help ☺️ you are the best see you at Nuffield Barbican ☺️
Negative experience: I was visiting Plymouth for three days and wanted to keep up with my workouts, I arrived at this gym and explained my situation and manager came out and told me they don't do day passes and that was that, no flex, nothing. I wouldn't have minded as much but I had just taken my pre-workout and was ready to train. What kind of company refuses business like this? I would have been less likely to write this if I hadn't already had a bad fall out with Nuffield Chislehurst. This confirmed for me that I'll never use Nuffield again, any branch, anywhere. I found JD Gym and was so impressed. It has high quality, modern machines, it's clean and has a sauna.
Fantastic experience: Love this gym! The staff are all welcoming friendly, helpful and professional and it’s a great place to work out even when it’s busy there’s space. The facilities are good including the sauna and pool. Probably my favourite gym I’ve joined.
Negative experience: This place is now too expensive. No jacuzzi, you pay more for the racquet club even if you dont play tennis . This would be ok but the gym is too small and it is not helped as the personal trainers take up all the space with clients. Needs sorting asap. I would suggest a CrossFit type area in either one of the many empty sports halls or upstairs. If not you will loose members as you are not providing value for.money.
Negative experience: Left a while back, shocking, filthy, expensive and those male fitness instructors dont have time for a question from myself but time for any of the young women. Also kept me paying when I stopped, had to threaten with local rag to get some money back. Should be closed down!
Negative experience: Prices have been raised for the second time in a few months, yet facilities have been taken away like the spa pool. The shower area is in a state of disrepair, with tons of black mould and the sealant falling off the walls where it’s pulling away. Management said they had fixed the fact the doors don’t close on the showers but this is still not the case, only some of the doors close and they are see through with zero privacy anyway. On a visit to the pool this week the drains smelled of sewage and I got out the pool immediately, only to be faced with a grim situation in the showers too. There was also a huge amount of hair on the walls and floor in the showers. The air con in the gym area has also been broken on and off for over a year now. It’s always too hot. And there is issues with over crowding and queuing for machines in the gym. Big groups attend together and hog multiple machines so they can swap in and out between them, 6 people at a time. Currently looking about for a new gym in the area as the price rises vs standards you get don’t marry up.
Negative experience: Recently the gym has added more members meaning waiting times on machines is far too long. maintenance is awful. Never space in sauna. Never space in changing rooms. The kit is fast becoming so overused and the gym doesn’t replace it. Quality is down to the point I shall be leaving. It’s shameful for the price. Pool is disgusting too. Avoid.
Negative experience: As a member since some time every next time this gym is less and less atractive... It is basically less for more, and its ongoing for while. Poor hygiene (there are pubes, wrapers, chewing gums in a lockers and showers) Today (thats 31/12) one member found a worm in there, like a one which it atractive by germs and untidy places. Other users doesnt respect if someone wants to be quiet for 20minutes and there is chat all the time. Sauna is a place of meditation, especially if someone is there allready, its a decent thing respect it. It is almost impossible to find a half empty lane for 30minutes to do some lenghts. Some females members swam the way that they are next to eachother and chating while swimming (instead follow eachother, and chat after session). Seriously convidering unsubscribe my membership. There is definitely lots to improve, because it used to be decent place. Oh, yes after they shut jacuzzi there supossed to be something instead of it, I can understand vost and ect but ice plunge or second cooling shower wouldnt cost too much. Going back to sauna and steam room iself, first should be required to sit on a towel or some cloth to absorb all the sweat, second fit a hose there to wash previous users sweat of the tiles. It could be nice. Regards
Fantastic experience: Great Classes, staff, trainers, and facilities especially the pool & steam room
Negative experience: Why on earth didn’t you turn off the jaquizzi turn it to cold so it’s a dip pool for health. Massive waste of a resource that can be used as something else until the money situation improves
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym!
Positive experience: Joined in February and have been really enjoying this gym, staff are very friendly and happy to help. I mostly use the pool facilities and classes due to mobility issues and find that it can be quite overcrowded, especially as the decision has been made to remove the spa pool (jet pool) permanently. Husband uses the top floor free weights and machines and whilst variety and quality of equipment is very good he also often relays that these areas are also very crowded. For any improvement, I think that either an extension of the space and some moderation / limitation of members would be ideal. For instance as all members scan their card to enter there could also be an exit scan to provide accurate numbers in the premises (this would also be advantageous in any instances of fire / evacuation) which could then relay through the app to allow members to see how busy the gym is before arriving.
Positive experience: Great friendly gym. Good equipment and facilities with a lovely atmosphere.
Negative experience: Just walked out of the gym.. way too busy! More equipment is needed and better use of floor area
Fantastic experience: A great gym with fantastic facilities and helpful instructors. I'm 100% moving to this gym when my membership elsewhere runs out!
Negative experience: Sorry Nuffield, nothing personal. The facilities and staff are still great, but it’s no longer an enjoyable visit for me. For some reason you have an overcrowding issue. Way, way too many people are using the gym and pool from 1700 to about 1945 weekdays. No hope of getting on a piece of equipment or swimming, let alone relaxing in a stress free environment. This means cleanliness also suffers. Have you signed up too many new members recently?
Fantastic experience: Been a member for over a year now and can't fault it. Always really clean considering the amount of members. Yes, at times the pool area is busy but its just one of those things. The classes are always good and the instructors are faultless. Really friendly staff on the front desk and willing to help. Even if you're on the waiting list I find you do tend to get a place.
Negative experience: nuffield health is way too expensive for what it is, way to crowded. aircon is broken and wont be fixed untill winter. when i asked for a refund they laughed at me and said im never going to get one. staff are really rude. since moving to puregym ive been able to exercise alot better and have loads more room. avoid this gym!!
Fantastic experience: It's really good gym professional equipment. Nice and friendly stuff. Really recommending
Negative experience: Made to feel very unwelcome in the Gym by the Fitness Manager because of my disability.
Fantastic experience: I have been a member for over a year now and thought I would share my thoughts. This gym is brilliant. Fantastic helpful staff and modern equipment which, crucially, is kept very clean. Very well done Nuffield Health team, see you shortly for a morning swim. ♂️♀️
Fantastic experience: This club has an overall great and better atmosphere than the devonshire seems to, you walk in and straight away you feel under no pressure and and you get left alone, nobody bothers you or takes offence for anything even for so much as walking in a certain way, I love it and will keep using, I love just opposite the devonshire which had a wonderful outdoor pool but this club appears to take the edge with its spa.facilities whilst the pool is smaller, if you choose your times and can accept a bit of hustle and bustle then this club works well, also the gym is excellent containing equipment that most gyms in this city dont have and you would normally travel far for. Keep up the good work and staff seem to be great there too.
Fantastic experience: Visited to check out facilities, complimentary swim+ workout, didn t think it would meet my needs as l can only do vertical swimming exercises.Tried a few other pools, gyms.Reconsidered and requested another complimentary session ,granted without hesitation.l have now been a highly satisfied member for several months.Staff in all areas are enthusiastic, cheerful and always happy to help and advise. Can highly recommend it.
Negative experience: As a long term member I have sadly seen a decline in the clientele in this club. From certain members urinating in the jacuzzi and shower area around the pool to lots of people swimming in the pool not adhering to 4 persons per lane.
Fantastic experience: Great staff, came in for a fitness test and the staff member who did it was incredibly supportive and helpful. Really great place couldn't have had a better experience
Fantastic experience: Excellent Gym, Great members of staff who are supportive, friendly and helpful.
Negative experience: after cancelling my membership they continued to charge my account, kept sending me letters stating I owed them money, got a debt collector involved WHEN THEY KNEW THEY'D MESSED UP. Needless to say, I've been fighting for my money since October last year AND STILL HAVEN'T SEEN IT. Avoid like the plague.
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym, friendly reception and pt's I met, lush jacuzzi and sauna, showers are nice and hot! only not a 5 star as the steam room could do with more steam, gym could do with some heavier kettlebells upto 30kg at least like most gyms and decent Reebok steps for doing exercises off instead of the cheap ones they have and most of all I got frustrated with playing the game "hunt for the 20kg plates" which took at least 5 mins off my workout as the plates in gym are such a mess both times I've been in to use the place. Would still choose this gym over budget gyms though. UPDATE: Having being diagnosed with an illness yrs ago which has had an detrimental effect on my hormones, I recently sought support and advice from the PT Alison Willis who has been amazing and so understanding and thorough with her lifestyle and nutritional advice being that she is a fully qualified nutritionist I have found her help invaluable and recommend her to anyone seeking to improve all aspects of their health and fitness
Positive experience: Great equipment and staff are always friendly and extremely helpful!!
Negative experience: Avoid avoid avoid. I agree with all negative comments I've read. It's like working out in a sauna, equipment is poorly maintained, PT's are sleazy, gym classes minimal and management team, right to HQ, who do not respond to feedback. Despite constantly asking for your comments they just get defensive. in general the chain is fine but not this one!
Negative experience: Staff at front desk are wonderful and friendly. Explained that my son had a Navy PJFT appointment any chance of doing it earlier as my wife was sat at hospital having chemo, young lady ran around organising it for us, sure no problem, just wait in a side room, should only be a 15 to 20 minutes. If only, the instructor, Dan, sat in a staff room, less than 1 metre from where we were sat and waited until appointment time, no earlier, so we waited 45 minutes for nothing. Why not just be honest and say you are not going to do it? So my wife then had to wait an hour to be collected after treatment. On this basis I would not recommend.
Negative experience: Too expensive for the little space ! The gym and jacuzzi mostly broken with no notice . It’s busy in an uncomfortable way .Dont recommend!
Positive experience: Well equipped, pool is a bit small for serious swimming
Negative experience: Extremely shocked at how filthy the machines are. Friendly staff. Very Dated cardio machines and take ages to slow down or speed up on some of them. They seem to break all the time Air con isn’t that great. Life centre offers better modern machines and air con and a lot more space. Only go to the Nuffield as it’s closer to my home. .
Fantastic experience: I have been going to the nuffield for around 5 years and I'm actually a little shocked at a couple of the reviews I just read . The nuffield to me is the best in plymouth . I have been to other gyms and they do not compare . The staff are amazing from reception to the personal trainers . The classes are the best and the thing that stands out to me is that the staff actually care . They do alot for charity and get all the members involved . From a personal point of view they have changed my life . I would highly recommend the nuffield to anyone .
Fantastic experience: A++++ Very nice health club. You can come here have a work out then you can relax in the hot tub, sauna or steam room.
Positive experience: I thought I'd give this gym a try after being recommended by friends, as I was in the area I managed to get a day pass. Not really knowing what to expect, as gyms can be hit or miss. I was greeted by friendly and courteous staff who were very helpful and even offered me a tour. I tend to find my own way and the staff were happy to allow me the freedom to do so, but made sure I found my bearings. The changing rooms were clean, but did have the typical boys changing rooms at school whiff about it. There's an abundance of space to get changed and plenty of lockers to stow your belongings in. I was impressed by the small luxuries like the spin dry machine for your wet clothes post-swim and hairdryers too (even though I'm bald). The gym itself is located on the upper floor, which I found to be surprisingly small and badly laid out. I can understand the need to maximise space but the equipment seems very jumbled around as well as being tightly packed together... which I can imagine can be a safety hazard when it's full to capacity. The equipment itself is generally good, however I was dubious of the leg press as it looked very old and another member warned me not to use it as it's rather 'rickety'... so I gratefully gave that a miss. Overall the gym is okay, but it does need rearranging into a better order with some serious consideration of h&s. Post-workout I headed to the pool, located on the ground floor, which also has jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. The shower area was clean and tidy, and my only gripe here is that the water could do with being a bit hotter... But maybe that's because I like a near scalding water temp. Overall it's a good gym that's in need of a spruce-up and change around, but in saying that... I would use again.
Fantastic experience: Very good and friendly staff
Positive experience: Very nice health club. It is pricey but it is worth it. You can come here have a work out then you can chill out in a hot tub, sauna or steam room. It is much bigger than first expected from outside.
Thank you Sam for your positive feedback and 4* rating. Kind regards, Nuffield Health Plymouth Fitness & Wellbeing Gym.
Negative experience: No signs of improving Starting to lose patience with this place. My wife and I use this centre 5 days a week. And don't mind the fact some of the reception staff are more friendly than others. Or the instructors, when not involved in thier clients hover together discussing their weekends. Bar the new girl who looks after people who need help and keep a the gym tidy as does the Australian guy, when Simon is working the younger guys tend to look busy. But when the spa area is consistently breaking down, often with no notice or explanation. And you change the settings so you have to keep turning the jacuzzi on manually. And no instructions on how to do this. The spa is out every month getting serviced/cleaned, some mornings staff have to be asked to turn the jacuzzi on as they tend to forget and with the regular breakdowns is totally unacceptable when you are taking £80 a month. Gym wise there are better and cheaper gyms in Plymouth. The only difference is your spa, which is proving unreliable and frustrating. I am sure you will not miss our £80 a month when we go. But at least you will know why. Update 24.11.17 Despite a slight improvement. The sign explaining how the jacuzzi works and far better interaction at the desk. To find the jacuzzi out of action again and the staff were not even aware until I pointed it out and it was obvious that the male showers had not been cleaned. As a bit of chewing gum from Thursday was still there. Not good.
Good Afternoon James. We appreciate you taking the time to detail your feedback. However, we are sorry to hear this and take on board your comments for review. Kind regards, Nuffield Health Plymouth Fitness & Wellbeing Gym.
Negative experience: Don't get caught out, your membership doesn't automatically cancel when your contract does. I've moved away, but have to physically go in and sign to say I want out.... even though I only signed for a 12 month contract anyway. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP NUFFIELD.
Good morning, thank you for your recent review. We appreciate all feedback, both positive and negative. We apologise for any inconvenience caused when canceling your membership. Fantastic experience: When I first started going I felt a little intimidated but now I love it, the PT's are friendly and give you a few pointers if required. I've also had some training sessions with Paul Dean and he's listened to me and put some epics sessions together. The classes are amazing! You can work at your own pace. This is the first gym I've felt comfortable at.
Good morning Laura, thank-you for your recent review. We really appreciate feedback and are glad that you are enjoying our gym! We hope to see you back in our gym again soon. Kind regards, Nuffield Health Plymouth Fitness & Wellbeing Gym.
Fantastic experience: Top gym !
Fantastic experience: Awesome gym and a nice feel to it. It's got everything you need and more. Plus it's amazing value when you consider everything you get. The gym seems to attract people who just want to go in and get on with their own routine. Gyms can be an intimidating place, but for me the Nuffields has a friendly feel to it and it's a nice place to workout. The staff have always been more than happy to help me out out on numerous occasions and I can honestly say, I would definitely recommend it. Also from reading earlier posts, the ventilation seems fine. Thumbs up from me..
Thank you for your kind endorsement, we appreciate it!
Positive experience: Ventilation is terrible, 500k spent on what exactly? The running machines were good..but now its the same equipment as "The Gym" and the customer service (mainly the female staff, is none existent) opening times on the weekend aren't great either. better gyms in Plymouth I would say.
