Gosforth Leisure Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: MIXED CHANGING ROOMS?! Poor women being forced to shower and get changed with men. Disgusting. Not safe for women. Will not be returning.
Hi Reece, Thank you for your review, Please could you contact us at [email protected] and we can discuss your issues. Regards Team Gosforth
Negative experience: Very mediocre gym
Hi William, Thank you for your review, please could you contact us via email at [email protected] so we can look into any recommended improvements. Thank you.
Positive experience: I can only comment on the swimming pool. Went there for the first time recently. The building is certainly a bit tired, and the changing rooms are cramped. Nevertheless everything worked fine, and the pool itself is decent enough. The temperature of the water was reasonably warm - anyone expecting a 'leisure pool' temperature will be disappointed as it's not a leisure pool, it's for exercise and swimming lessons!
Hi Stepehn, Thank you for your review, we appreciate any feedback and are always looking to improve our services. Team Gosforth
Negative experience: Sauna and steam are completely separate from the pool, forcing you to get dressed between using them. Pool is cold. Changing rooms are dirty.
Hi Jasmine, Thnak you for your review, Please could you contact us at [email protected] and we will be able to discuss your issues further. Thanks
Negative experience: The pool was so cold and they couldn’t let my son swim by himself when he knows how to swim we asked them if they could make the water any warmer but they refused and made me and my son leave and no refunds
Hi Ameer, Sorry for the delay in response to your review, as you can imagine trying to increase the pool temperature isn't a quick process and can take some time. If you could contact us at [email protected] we will be happy to support/discuss. Team Gosforth
Positive experience: Good value facilities, and parking is very cheap and usually easy
Negative experience: Poor customer service, rude, disgusting changing room floor always covered in dirty liquid.
Fantastic experience: It's a good place with Gym, Swim, Sauna and steam. They conducting training classes.
Hi Karan, Thank you for your review, we are happy you enjoyed our services. Team Gosforth
Positive experience: Changing area is crowded and has shared toilets for men and women
Positive experience: Good gym with a decent range of machines and a great selection of free weights. Some of the machines need some help to stop rattling (centre treadmill upstairs) but that’s small beer. Staff friendly. I’ll come Back here if I’m working back up in the area in the future.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful staff ,very helpful regarding problems with app ( my fault) Pool staff very good at each individual classes especially the deep water aerobics well done team.
Positive experience: All I wanted to know was how much it was to swim, when the swimming lanes were in place and whether I had to be a member. Not an easy to navigate the page and nobody answers the phone. What's happening to the world?...
Hi Andy, Thank you for your review. With any of our swim for fitness and swim for all sessions we will have lanes available. All of our sessions and price lists are available on our web page or through our better uk app. https://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/newcastle/gosforth/prices the above link will take you to the price page on our web site. Feel free to pop into centre and one of our team will be happy to assist.
Fantastic experience: A small cosy and friendly place, has swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam room.
Fantastic experience: Been coming here for about 40 years. Never had a bad experience. Great that the gym is being upgraded. Also never had a problem with the booking app. Keep up the good work!
Positive experience: Love my PT Monika there. She is the only reason I keep going there. The issue with this gym is outdated equipment, not replacing broken or missing ones, and this crazy CRAZY app / membership system. Never seen an app so little user friendly
Negative experience: Steam room still out of action. 2 weeks, no explanation, no refunds. Staff could not care less. Has to be worst run leisure centre in Newcastle.
Positive experience: Disappointed the steam room was out of commission , apparently been broken for 5 days now a do believe the customers should be offered 50 percent discount regards John McKenna
Fantastic experience: Leisure centre is clean and staff were welcoming. All lanes were open when I attended and the lane discipline was good. The pool wasn’t overcrowded so you can have a good swim. Only feedback would be the 20p non refundable lockers are a bit of an outdated concept - I wouldn’t have had the cash if I hadn’t read a review! Also the changing cubicles are very small.
Thanks for the great review Charlie. We are trying to work with our locker supplier to remove the 20p charge so hopefully that is something we can resolve as well in the near future. Thanks for the feedback. The team at Gosforth Leisure
Fantastic experience: This review is for Kachi’s spinning class. Although I was apprehensive since I did not enjoy previous spinning classes which I have attended at other gyms, this early morning session was a great experience. It started with nice warm up music, inspirational and motivational main session tracks and and a relaxing cool down. The soft colour lighting effects were also very welcome at 7am. I would not have tried this class without Kachi’s encouragement and am glad I did so and would recommend his classes to anyone who would like to mix up their workout routine.
Thanks for the great review Kamilah, we will pass this on to Kachi :D
Positive experience: The classes are great, but I think they could really do better to keep the changing rooms more hygienic and the hair dryers don't work well. They are very poor quality, and one falls off; it can not stay attached at all, and there are timers I believe on the hair dryers that give you at least 25 seconds or so to blow dryer your hair and then it automatically turns off or it does not work as well as it should, there are no Socket as well (if u were curious and thought it wasn't such a big idea) which means u can not plug in your own hair dyer/bring it.
Hi Marija, thanks for your feedback. Taking on your comments we will look to increase staff checks within our changing room areas. We are actively looking into the issue with our hair dryers to try and get longer hoses as they are being over stretched. Unfortunately due to health and safety we can’t allow anyone to bring in personal electrical equipment as these have not been PAT tested and unfortunately we can't add sockets into our changing rooms as we can not guarantee that it would be waterproof. If you would like to discuss any of your concerns further, please don't hesitate to get in touch via [email protected]
Negative experience: Came for the first time looking for a swim and sauna. Booked both online across the same hour (no bother booking and paying), but the setup is very strange - access to the sauna/steam room is out of the changing rooms and down a corridor which also leads to an exercise studio, and from the males changing room they have to walk out and across the main entrance/reception (whilst in swimming gear and possibly wet from shower/swim). The sauna was a bit grotty in appearance and the spa smelled like wet dog at the time. Swimming was in lanes but as one was closed for swimming lessons, there wasn't space for all swimmers to swim comfortably without either chasing slower swimmers or being chased. The lockers cost 20p but the reception made clear they have no change on site...I didn't feel welcome and didn't enjoy my visit, hopefully others have a better time.
Negative experience: Came here today with my boyfriend thinking we are going to have a fun and happy day and have some laughs for a regular swim but didn’t feel like a regular swim felt like a lesson, have to do 1 length in the main pool and back I was in the main pool where I can stand just to fix my goggles and to get use to the water as I haven’t been swimming for 8 years this man with brown beard and glasses was never off my case when I was going to do my first length my goggles got steamed and I stop to clean then when the man came over to me he wanted me to start again while my boyfriend was already at the deep end waiting for me, so I proved him wrong and did a length but was walking along watching me for a 15 year old girl you would feel uncomfortable while and man is just staring at you while swimming I couldn’t concentrate what I was doing but on the other hand he didn’t watch my boyfriend when he done length showing lots of sexism. And when I was catching my breath at the bottom of the deep end here he comes again telling me I need to float for 30 seconds without holding on! For a 15 year old girl you would feel embarrassed when their is people are around you. After that I was not allowed near the deep end as they thought I wasn’t strong enough but I did 2 lengths ok? I didn’t stay there for the 55 mins as even when I was in shallow end was still getting watched so I got out and left. Thanks for that women in the changing room who listened to the whole conversation and understand where I was coming from and thought I was I great swimming
Hi Eve. Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately it is our company policy to swim test anyone that a lifeguard has concern over their swimming ability. This is to ensure the safety of the individual, as well as other pool users. If you would like to get in touch with us using the [email protected] email address to discuss your concerns further we would be happy to explain our entrance policy. Kind Regards, the team at Gosforth Leisure Centre
Positive experience: Some of the staff could do with working on their attitudes I was stuck and didn’t know my way around building and I got ingnored by receptionist thankfully the dark haired lady helped me and showed me around which I am greatfull for, pool is really great and fun my child loved it thanks ! I will return
Negative experience: Terrible facilities, rude staff, sanitation was awful, all the machine jes were dirty, definitely suggest not coming here
Negative experience: Kids have to perform an on the spot swim test of the entire pool to enable them to swim beyond the first 10 yards of the main pool. Very intimidating for a 9yr old when the lifeguard is looming over you telling you that you have to pass a test before you can enjoy yourself. Either that or play in the small pool with the toddlers.
Hi Stephen. Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately it is our company policy to swim test anyone that a lifeguard has concern over their swimming ability. This is to ensure the safety of the individual, as well as other pool users. If you would like to get in touch with us using the [email protected] email address I would like to invite your child to a free lesson in our Better Swim School and see if we can help get them up to speed and swimming on their own. Kind Regards, the team at Gosforth Leisure Centre
Negative experience: It is disappointing to ask you to cancel your next month subscription 20 days in advance. Also that spot booking system is not very flexible.
Positive experience: Back in the eighties there was an annual swimming competition called 'The Tizer Knockout' and I was in that competition from the first to the last... I was part of the St Cuthberts RC Primary School Team and our team won that every year if memory serves me correctly. Every team got their photo took and it was always put in the Evening Chronicle; We used to think we were proper famous and started to worry about getting recognised; Oh yes we thought we were the G.O.A.T!!! It was like Prust Medalains when I saw that one post about "gossie pool". Memories from 35 years ago have just came rushing back... Thank you for unintentionally bringing my junior school memories back Always had an amazing time at this pool... Would recommend this pool, definitely... It's just an all round great place to go to
Negative experience: Didn’t let me and my friends in the pool even tho we could swim
Negative experience: Terrible centre, the machines are often broke, the swimming pool is essentially for schools only from 11am-5pm and the changing rooms are drenched, with wet benches and the staff spray water all around while your trying to get dry its like getting dry in a swimming pool and the staff dont care
Positive experience: great pool and facilities are great but gym expensive
Fantastic experience: Lovely local pool and gym
Negative experience: I came back after more than one year and it has been even worse than I remember and also the price has been increased. The swimming pool is dirty and the facilities quite old and not clean in general, I wanted to leave the pool since I got in. Also I was cold waiting for some children to finish the lesson. The staff was not really nice when they told me to wait, only the woman from reception was polite and friendly. I remember better in general, it's becoming worse. I don't feel going back again and it is a shame.
Fantastic experience: Good swimming instructors.
Thanks for the great review Will. I will pass your feedback onto our swimming teachers
Positive experience: My kids enjoy swimming lessons and I can see their progress, good value for money. I wish some more classes for 3-4 years old, maybe Thursday or Friday as not every child goes full time nursery and Gosforth nurseries do 2.5 days Mon, Tue and Wed. Female changing room usually stinks... needs more often cleaning
Fantastic experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Not been as into my swimming as I used to be years back. Perfectly sound pool. Great that they still know me after all this time. Good banter with the staff too. Seems a little odd that there are lockers that cost 20p to use, and others that are completely free to use
Negative experience: Cannot speak to the leisure directly. Not happy a simple enquiry over lost property took ten minutes to connect and the message passed on the leisure centre who ‘may’ ring back.
Fantastic experience: It's really nice. I go there for a swim & a sauna & I really enjoy it. It's relaxing & after a day at work or before I go to work, it helps to face or finish the day. The staff is very good & in February one of his members help me to become s member. It's a good price for a full membership, it gives you access to all that is on offer. Me, I'll stick to swimming & sauna
Fantastic experience: I go to the gym here and it's got everything you need for a great workout. and the staff are so friendly nice and helpful. What more do you need. I highly recommend it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Negative experience: booked a gym session via the online app..only to arrive and find that there is very little parking..pay and display car park was full to the brim with cars waiting to get in.tried to find some on street parking only to find that its all permit only so after waiting 10 mins with still no available space i turned around and drove home.so my first session was non existant no mention of the parking on website.so this is beat review i can give for now
Positive experience: Pool is a nice temp but the showers won't stay on unless you hold the button down. I'm all for saving water but at least give 10 seconds between pushes
Fantastic experience: Fantastic staff, extremely helpful. I went in yesturday with my son so we could go for a sauna and steam room. I was unable to book in before attending but Doree the receptionist and the duty manager (unsure of his name) could not have been more helpful. Thank you!!
Positive experience: Great place for doing various things such as swimming and going to the gym, the swimming pool is quite big and usually quite calm however can be busy at times. The gym is made up of two decent sized floors which includes a huge variety of machines. Signing up has to be done online which is a bit of pain however it’s done due to COVID restrictions, altogether it’s a nice place.
Fantastic experience: Nice little place for tiny ones to learn swimming. Teachers are good.. I would actually like teachers to go in the water with kids as my tiny one is literally scared of water but other than that... good place to start!
Fantastic experience: Great experience - used the pool
Negative experience: Saunas still not open waste of space
Fantastic experience: I like to be there, It is easy to book a slot on app, also not many people around, plenty of cleaning material, and sanitisers. I ve seen a member of gym going around n tiding the place.
Fantastic experience: The manager is very helpful.
Positive experience: Could have been cleaner to be honest. Cobwebs and dust under machines. It didn't feel like a Covid cleaning schedule was in place. I spoke to staff and they were going to ensure it was improved.
Fantastic experience: Plenty of weights to pick up and put down.
Fantastic experience: I have done yoga before 15 years and recently started Yoga at Gosforth. Colin’s yoga is mind blowing and the best I have been. Each day his routine is new and different types of Yoga. At the end of the each class he summarise kind of yoga we have done and which part of the body is worked on. I could see always people from from young to old. His way of teaching is catered from newbie to experienced , young to old. Thanks Colin and Gosforth Leisure Centre for a wonderful relaxing experience. My daughter is going swimming and she loves it. Please pay at the carpark even if someone says you don't have to pay. Check the pay machine always.
Fantastic experience: Jodie was informative, pleasant and really helpful. Great facilities and parking.
Fantastic experience: Very nice and clean, well maintained centre. Friendly and coperative centre. Sometime can be busy esp. on weekends.
Negative experience: Unfriendly staff, grimey pool which needs a refurb, inconvenient times for swimming as there's usually classes on in half of the pool when it's open and the timetable is often incorrect and you have to pay for single use lockers, used to have tokens for members but they stopped doing them. Terrible value for money and there's leisure centres nearby much nicer for the same price or less.
Negative experience: Absolutely awful place. Not only you pay for membership, but also for parking AND for single use of lockers?? Just to receive extremely tiny cubicles and a single hair dryer, that barely blows any air? Not worth the money you pay.
Negative experience: The team is following stupid rules. They refused to have my daughters swimming with me in the adult section, and they refuse to have them sitting on the bench as well. Sure they are not swimmers, but they had water wings that was removing all risks. I did not mention that we were 5 swimmers only in the pool. Not impressed at all by the stupid quality of suveillance. Opening hours can change without prior notice. Today the swimming pool was closing at 12, instead or 13h30.
Fantastic experience: Lovely gym facilities, never overcrowded and relaxed atmosphere.
Negative experience: Nice place but staff are so unhelpful and little pool is hardly ever open. Time table for the little pool also changes at a drop of a hat. Such a shame really.
Positive experience: Big swimming pool has some mould around the sides of the pool and I go swimming with my sister and even first thing in the morning it’s crowded, hard for people to swim it’s like an obstacle course dodging people who just go for a social visit and not to properly exercise. The lifeguards don’t monitor the swimming lanes properly. The changing rooms are big but lots of cobwebs on ceiling and one of the toilet seats were broken. There is not very much opportunity for me to bring my one year old nephew swimming, the times allocated specifically limited and not flexible.
Negative experience: Not great for young families, small pool open for 55mins mid day through the week or late evening which is no good for pre schoolers. 1x nappy Change cubicle in the Male changing rooms that gets used by absolutely anyone regardless of age/children (several other regular cubicles available). Had several mix ups over times of the small pool opening even after asking reception for confirmation resulting in wasted journeys as time table not always up to date. Disappointing for the price as it’s not cheap. One extra star is for the library next door that we’ve ended up visiting when we’ve arrived to find the small pool closed. As others have posted, looking into other friendlier, more flexible pools that are further away.
Positive experience: Facilities are quite good, nice and spacious changing rooms however staff can be quite rude sometimes and there is quite a bit of mould in the pool. Except for that, it is a very nice place
Negative experience: I've only used the pool but the facilities are quite poor, despite the recent refurbishment. There are much better pools available locally which are also cheaper, especially for families.
Negative experience: This place is in need of a big refurbishment, they should knock it down and rebuild it.
Fantastic experience: Nice clean pool (25 mtrs). Staff are all really friendly. Only complaint I can say is that adult swim timetables are not always good for people who have to travel from their 9 to 5 job.
Positive experience: Good leisure centre, I use the gym the most. Recently refurbished and plenty of machines for the amount of people there. Always kept clean. Staff friendly and helpful.
Positive experience: Nice modern gym equipment, pool, sauna and steam room. Spacious changing rooms, but a lack of private showers is very odd for a gym. You have to stand and press a button and the water pressure is so poor you might as well wash under a dripping tap! One member of the reception staff "Susan" is really quite rude in her manner of speaking and dealing with people. In a customer service industry surely being attentive, kind and helpful should be standard, especially when membership is far from the cheapest in the area. All the other staff are really helpful, but she is one of the first faces you see and frankly it could put people off.
Fantastic experience: I am using the swimming pool every week day. The stuff are nice and friendly, the male changing are clean, the swimming pool is good and not too busy. It is a very nice and welcoming place which provides good range of activities.
Positive experience: It is a small community swimming pool. It have a 25m length main swimming pool with mostly 3 lines and rest of the pool with no lines. There is as well a small children pool. The pool is usually quite busy and you have to make sure that you avoid water workouts and school/clubs swimming as they take upon half of the pool;) The changing rooms are fine and staff is friendly.
Positive experience: Needs a good refurb to the pool but I find the facilities to be acceptable and I would return.
Positive experience: Its good
Positive experience: Always helpful the only thing is that some of the Gym equipment have been awaiting repair for weeks
Positive experience: Nice leisure centre. Small pool opening times and availability not great
Positive experience: Decent range of equipment for a small gym, never any problem getting onto the equipment on a lunchtime.
Positive experience: Good clean basic gym
Negative experience: the website is always down and the recorded message refers you to the website, how is it still open.....
Fantastic experience: Good facilities for weights and cardio. The swimming pool is spacious and there's a training pool for children to enjoy safely. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The membership is coupled with the other 'Better' leisure centres across the city (including Eldon Leisure).
Negative experience: Not the best. Staff are poorly informed. The small pool is not open consistently and trying to get up to date information out of the staff is like pulling teeth. The changing rooms are very dirty. The Pilates classes are at the point of dangerous with the instructor reading from a sheet of paper!
Negative experience: Facilities have never been the best but has seriously went down hill in the last 8 years. Some of the staff are really friendly while others clearly didn't want to be there. Now is just a gym for pensioners and house wives. The final insult was when they put all the weights in a tiny corner.Jumped ship to the gym on the high street who were much cheaper. can no longer be considered a serious establishment.
Negative experience: Awful unhelpful staff, poor facilities, relatively expensive and nobody answers the phone !!
Negative experience: I have a child who struggled with fear of water and swimming for years. I have finally managed to convince her to do 1 to 1 leasons with Swim North East. She has reached stage 2 and came to this pool to practice her skills. The staff demanded for her to swim a length, despit my parental supervision in the water. Then they made her go to the shallow end where she ended up being in the way of other swimmwers who were trying to swim full lengths. There were 3 life guards constanly watching us and making renarks about th exact line we meant not to cross. Her confidence was completely shattered. She is now afraid to go into the deep end, afraid to jump into the water and all thanks to the "Great" job of the BETTER rules and regulations. Avoid this pool if you want your family to enjoy a swimming experience.
Negative experience: No family changing rooms, old swimming pool in need of serious refurbishment. Recent efforts to improve the centre, but overall a poor offer compared with facilities available in Killingworth and Cramlington.
Positive experience: I have been a member here for many years and seen a number of changes there, but the most recent makeover has completed transformed the facilities and brought it into the 21st Century - it has everything you need to keep fit and healthy, the staff are well qualified and very helpful, and it's great value for money - I love it!
Negative experience: Some of the staff here are just beyond the pale. I pay for full membership, yet they just refused me and extra locker token so that I could get changed in between the gym and the sauna. So I've had to leave, come home and get my bank card, just so I could go to the ATM, then to the shop and buy something so that I have an extra 20 pence for the lockers. Anyhow, on my way home to pick up my card, I decided that I'm cancelling my DD at the end of the month. Stay away from these places under the banner of "Better", there are much much 'better' gyms that will accommodate your simple needs. A total rip off.
Negative experience: This is quite a nice leisure centre, however the staff could do with some training in how to be polite and helpful,so,so rude. A little bit of kindness goes along way and remember, you don't know what people might be suffering behind closed doors. Wanted to cry when the member of staff spoke to me the way she did. Give yourself a shake and treat people the way you want to be treated.
Hi Laura, we'd like to look into this further. Would you be able to email the centre manager: [email protected], or private message us on Facebook with your contact details? Many thanks.
Positive experience: Great staff... X cj know as carol lovely women and helpful xxx
Thanks for your feedback Georgina and we hope to see you again soon.
Positive experience: Undergoing refurbishment but very helpful lady called Carol showed us exactly where we needed to go. Good value for money and nice staff.
Thanks for your feedback Jill, we will pass this on to Carol. Hope to see you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Pool staff were attentive and kept an eye on weaker swimmers in the big pool, advising one child not to go beyond a certain depth. Reception staff were very polite and friendly. The pool and changing areas were clean, the water was a good temperature, and the showers were lovely and warm. The pool was not crowded, and also had two lanes for faster swimmers. I enjoyed my swim!
Positive experience: Recently refurbished changing rooms. Lovely clean little pool. Excellent staff. Highly recommend
Thanks for your lovely review Maureen. We're so pleased you enjoy the facilities and the refurbishments taking place. More work is planned in the near future to make the centre even better.
Negative experience: The while building needs a major refurb. Changing rooms are horrid and the place stinks to high heaven. Green mold all over tiles and ceiling in the sauna area. Complained to staff but they said there was a shortage of funds. At the end of the day theres no excuse when a bottle of mold and mildew remover costs only a quid. There are also far better value facilities close by.
Thanks for the feedback Tony; we are looking to improve each of the areas you have mentioned. We have just renewed half of the changing area and are working on the other half at the moment. The Sauna area is to be looked at next. We hope you find these improvements beneficial on your next visit to the centre.
Positive experience: It's a standard pool layout, but they add a load of toys to the baby pool, which goes down a treat!
Thanks for the review Matt, good to hear you're enjoying the toys provided!
Fantastic experience: Handy little pool and gym. Decent facilities for its size and location
Thanks for your feedback and support Alan; we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Fantastic experience: Went swimming there today for the first time and don't know what the fuss is all about with the other reviewers. Clean changing rooms. Clean pool. Discount card if you want to go swimming regularly. Was very happy. Quite quiet and friendly staff.
Fantastic experience: I did a Swimathon here for Marie Curie and take my kids swimming there too, the pool is clean and the showers always warm.. it isn't expensive and quite frankly is a great resource for all sorts of activities- including scuba diving lessons!
Negative experience: quite disappointed, was given wrong information at reception, kids not allowed in small pool unlike what staff said both on the phone and even at reception, they didn't know the exact time for private lessons and they were not friendly either!!!
Negative experience: This place is so antiquated and quite frankly not up to great hygiene standards. It has gotten noticeably worse in the last couple of months since the company was bought out. Reception staff aren't a problem at all, but the staff around the pool are quite frankly a disgrace. Allowing dangerous activity in the pool etc etc Earlier in week I had to take things into my own hands to sort out a situation. Now using the Pool at Dunston Leisure Centre which I have to say is so much more up to standards as a whole organisation.
Negative experience: Gosforth pool is my local pool and I am ashamed to say how dirty the female change is. You have to watch where you walk on the way to the pool for dirt and clogged drains. They also do not provide facilities for length swimming. I go 2 nights per week. Tuesday(ladies) and Thursday(adults)and once the keep fit come in they make us move out of the lanes so they can use them and they do not put another lane in for genuine swimmers. The staff are a waste of space as they just look on and have no control over the pool. They are to interested and don't listen to your needs. They more or less tell you to like it or lump it
