Nuffield Health West Byfleet Fitness & Wellbeing Gym: Opinions
Negative experience: Ah yes, the Nuffield gulag, seemingly not had a refresh since the glory days of the Soviet bloc and aiming for the same visual style. Their promotional photos are very well posed, the actual facilities are much shabbier. £80 per month for grotty facilities, small weights area and poor selection of machines, broken showers, no towels, and now they've changed all the lockers to padlocks. Didn't get an email from them to say so, and they wanted to charge for the lock instead of offer a one-off loaner for that first-time inconvenience. Impossible to find out what's happening in the pool unless you go, often swimming lessons or family time disrupt it. Guildford manage to list what's on, is West Byfleet frozen in time without modern communication methods? Go find a nicer gym; you can get much better equipment for cheaper, or much nicer facilities for the same price.
Negative experience: The days of Nuffield Health are well and truly over!! The spa closed down despite falling electricity prices and rising popularity of Solar Power. Towels removed which vandalised my tumble dryer and washing machine. No more hot food served (it's very obvious that they've put the fridge in reception). The Beauty Salon closed down just because its manager had babies (she clearly wasn't aware that babies are expensive before she got pregnant). The Clinic still frets about Covid despite the wide availability of vaccines that put an end to the pandemic. LED lighting is too blue and streaky in the weightlifting areas and changing rooms. So much fungi in the showers and steam room. For all the above, I hope Nuffield Health goes out of business and this old building is rebuilt by a more decent fitness provider. This is such a shame because my parents made me lots of friends here. Go to David Lloyd Brooklands or David Lloyd Woking instead. Both of these DL's have each recently opened a magnificent Spa Retreat, which is something that Nuffield Health would never do even with Solar Power.
Negative experience: This place can’t be taking too many new members. Went for a one off free pass. Changing rooms. Not clean. Old scuffed walls and doors. Mould and blown plaster and MdF trims. Shower area pretty manky with years of limescale and old fittings. Defo wouldn’t spend £70-90 a month on this place.

Positive experience: I regularly train here and am extremely grateful for a hard-working staff. The club could have HUGE potential as it has the luxury of space. Some courageous managerial decisions need to be made, though. 1. The gym needs a serious refurbishment. The machines were old ten years ago! This seriously limits the clientele. Management is playing it safe and catering to a retired populous. This is self-fulfilling. 2. The Steam room is above average, functional, and an excellent addition. The sauna is woefully inconsistent and needs addressing. 3. The cafe area is a delight! 4. Fantastic parking for GSXR1000 riders!

Negative experience: Very poor. Towels were removed at the start of covid and are yet to return. The changing rooms are filthy. The sauna door is broken and has been for months meaning it doesn't hold temperature. Showers vary from filthy to broken. The pool is unusable on a Sunday morning as it has been sublet to a baby group. Remind me what I'm paying for again?

Fantastic experience: I love this club. I go to fitness and pilates classes, and swim there. My child also really enjoys the pool. It never feels too overcrowded. There's a very relaxed feel to the club. The classes offered are good overall. Staff very friendly too. Situated in a leafy, quiet area of West Byfleet.

Negative experience: Possibly one of the worst standard of gyms I've ever used. Memberships cost around £60 a month and the gym itself is tiny, not to mention about 10 years outdated. The floor area is literally a dingy corridor under some stairs. Utterly shocking. The shower facilities were disgusting with limescale, dirt and a funny smell of drains everywhere. I would have been disgusted if it were a budget gym, let alone the higher end gym it claims to be. Could not recommend less.

Fantastic experience: I had never used a gym before but the recommendations by friends gave me push the I needed. I'm so glad I did and I haven't looked back, all the staff are really helpful and friendly, the facilities are excellent and a really great environment. I highly recommend

Fantastic experience: So glad to be back!! Initially i was apprehensive to get myself back to the gym however Nuffield as always are so on the ball. So clean throughout the facilities there was evidence of regular cleaning and sanitizing taking place during my visit, staff are on hand to help with anything and definitely put my mind at ease. This 1 visit has made me excited to get back into my gym routine and feel more safe. Good job guys.

Negative experience: A bit sad the water tap in the gents has been out of action for months and that means no drinking water when using the pool or sauna. The jacuzzi is out of action as is the steam room and the pool at the moment 31/12/2021

Negative experience: One of the worst gyms I've been to. I actually cannot believe this is the same company that runs the Oxford branch (which is one of the nicest gyms I've been to). Lacks equipment, space & the facilities are just generally run-down and look a shambles...
Negative experience: I pay £70 every month for: 1. Not being able to book classes at 7.00am, straight after they release them 2. Not being able to use gym equipment without queueing 3. Smelly showers 4. Dusty floors 5. Queues on the reception to enter 6. Not being able to find parking space 7. Wobbly and uncomfortable bikes in the cycle studio Dear Nuffield Health, seems you reached your capacity some time ago. I'd expect a little more from a private fitness centre, charging quite a lot of money for the membership.
Negative experience: Went here for a trial day to see if I wanted to join. Costs £70 a month so not cheap. I got given a sad straggly towel, then wow - what a dirty place the changing rooms and pool where. I include a picture of the black mould growing in the female changing room. This was one of many patches. The sills were covered in dust and hair, I felt dirty just being in there. The gym and changing room are old and tired, peeling wood and grimey showers. The gym is small. There are not a lot of cardio machines but the weight section looked pretty large and comprehensive. The Medical area for treatment and cafe looked ok. I went to use the pool but the class in it had got out because someone had developed a rash and found a dressing floating in the water, which was also cloudy and looked like it had an oily layer over the top. Disgusting. The only pleasant moment was in the tiny sauna, but the door didn't shut properly so cold air kept coming in. It was also really busy amazingly for a Tuesday morning. The car park is tiny so there was no where to park. I am now going home to wash thoroughly after my first experience of a Nuffield health club.
Fantastic experience: Wide range of classes which run during the day and evening. See below for what peak times are like... Squash courts/freeweights/cardio/cafe/swimming pool The membership costs are quite high but you get plenty of services to justify the cost. Between 6pm and 8pm during the week the gym can become very busy with limited parking. Especially if there are classes running at the same time. Weekends you have children swimming lessons so best to avoid if you can. If you must come on a weekend come later in the day after 2pm if possible
Negative experience: There is always a problem with this place. Their showers running out of hot water and nobody bothers to fix them asap. They have had too many times problem with lacking hot waters in showers. Besides showers are never clean enough, lots of dirt and hair on the walls and floor. The lockers in the changing room are full of dirt. The cellings in the classes are not maintained. During one of the lessons the ceiling plate fell down! They are taking some much money for the membership that's it's not worth of paying!
Positive experience: Upon arriving at the gym you need may find a lack of parking off putting but I was pleasantly surprised to see they off parent and child parking showing that the facility is family friendly. The quality of the reception is much better than my home club Leatherhead and the receptionists are friendly and welcoming. The gym itself has some of the best equipment I've seen in a Nuffield. It's Technogym touch screen running machines allow you to run in various simulated environments which was impressive. The layout of the space takes a little getting used to and that mainly due to it being formly squash courts. So one part is cardio another the restistance machines and the corridor is a stretching area. It's nice that the spin studio doesn't encroach on the gym itself being upstairs and so you can get into your own zone with disruption. The pool is alright, I have to admit on multiple occasions I've seen fluff floating which is a bit off putting and so I think the filters could be improved. The jacuzzi is acceptable, it's not got an power to it unlike Guildford's Spa facility but at least it has one unlike Leatherhead. The Steam room is brutally hot just as you want. The Saunas are in the changing rooms and the male one is about the footprint of a queen sized bed. When you get in you may be disappointed due to the draft lower down but it packs the driest heat of any of the local Nuffields which is exactly what you want from a sauna. That's mainly because it doesn't have the moisture of the pool area. The cafe is a proper cafe, offering food and coffees. i make the point because this isn't true of all of Nuffields. I haven't tried but that fact it offers it is good enough for me. Other than that the USP for this place is it's squash courts which I haven't tried but is worth mentioning. All in all this place is great, if it had slightly better parking and a cleaner pool I'd give it 5 stars,
Negative experience: Although a huge fan of Nuffield Health brand overall, I was very disappointed with this particular branch, especially the wet facilities. The pool is tiny and reflective of the area, mainly occupied by families with kids. I wouldn't mind that so much if they were not closing down two lanes out of three for swim lessons which basically means that 4 people take up 90% of swimming space, leaving the rest off the members to share the one lane with so many other families. Upon my visit the jacuzzi was too hot and the pool side shower did not work. In short if you are a swimming fan might not be the best value for money. Still love the brand just not this location, luckily I mainly use Edinburgh branch the facilities and the team there are superb.
Fantastic experience: Mutch better than other place. Nice and clean, good range of equipments. Not busy in late hours. Convenient opening times.
Positive experience: Not the best gym. Lacking a number of weights machines. Small in comparison to most gyms. I don't like the low ceilings as a result i either have to skip outside when the large rooms are taken by classes or use rooms if avaliable. Short swimming pool should be at least 25m length pool which is disappointing. Great sauna and stram room. Staff are friendly and helpful. This is the only reason it gets a 3 otherwise I'd rate a 2. Am a vitality member and the points never upload. Am always having to ring up to get my points added. This is frustrating. All in all for what y9u get i think this gym is over priced!
Negative experience: Disappointing !! The west byfleet gym is tired and in need of repair. Too many pieces of equipment don't work and are out of date, no air con in studio's. Doesn't compare well to cheaper alternatives including nearby nuffield gyms (guildford). Staff and trainers are good.

Fantastic experience: 10/10 Attended the gym to work out whilst away from home, the facilities were amazing found overall equipment was perfect for shoulder workout. And as a shower entrepreneur one of the most free flowing power showers I have experienced. High pressure top quality. Reminds of dam.

Negative experience: Not worth the money!! Never enough classes and never at the right time unless you are retired. The opening times aren't very useful as last admission is 7pm on weekends although they say they are open until 8pm. The facilities are usually broken etc.. if its not the Jacuzzi, it's the machine to dry your swimming shorts.. Swimming pool is too small and usually you have to play dodge with everyone trying to swim at the same time. The gym isn't too bad if you can ignore the air con units dripping into buckets on the floor. All in all not impressed !!!

Fantastic experience: Really friendly club. So glad i joined! Booking system is a bit, no a lot, of a nightmare! Pre -covid the car park was overfull. Update may 13 2022: waiting for details of a new booking system supposedly being introduced later this month. None of the members i have asked were consulted- so much for customer satisfaction concerns! Attendance at classes are falling. Members fed up with the lack of proper cleaning maybe? Update 24/10 - water pouring through the ceiling of the changing room this morning.

Fantastic experience: The classes are great and now they have an online booking system it makes it easier to see what's available when, only recently joined back after a while away. Was a member when it was Canons gym, the layout has changed a little and the premises has undergone a refurbishment. The staff are friendly and welcoming and you are always greeted with a smile at reception. Great community gym, the members are also friendly. My boys have their swimming lessons here and it's a nice intimate pool.

Negative experience: Being a new member, I went for a swim with my six-year-old daughter at 5pm this Sunday. Didn't even finish one length as the attendant appeared asking us to leave: apparently no kids are allowed in the pool after 4pm as they have no lifeguard after that time. So if I start drowning after 4pm, it's ok, I don't need a lifeguard, but my six-year-old who's constantly under my supervision and can swim is a problem. My daughter was very quiet, didn't even make splashes, and there was just one swimmer in another lane in the pool apart from us. The girl felt completely humiliated by the request to leave and started crying. Thank you for ruining our day, Nuffield Health West Byfleet !

We have to adhere to strict health and safety guidance with regards to minors in our pool facilities. One of those is having a trained lifeguard available when the pool is in use by children.
