Our comment from FitFit UK about Leatherhead Leisure Centre:
Leatherhead Leisure Centre is a vibrant and dynamic facility that offers a wide array of services aimed at promoting health and fitness within the community. Recently renovated with modern amenities, the centre boasts a spacious gym equipped with state-of-the-art machines, making it an excellent destination for fitness enthusiasts. Users have highlighted the following positive aspects:
- Fantastic Gym: The gym area is spacious and filled with new, high-quality equipment. Many members appreciate the range of facilities available, including a sauna, steam room, and varied fitness classes.
- Friendly Staff: The staff members are frequently noted for their friendliness and willingness to help, creating a welcoming environment for all visitors.
- Community Focus: The centre hosts a variety of activities for families and children, making it a popular choice for community events and gatherings.
- Cleanliness: While some users have raised concerns over cleanliness, many praise the bright and airy feel of the premises.
Despite the many positive features, there are areas that require attention:
- Communication Issues: Some members have noted a lack of transparency regarding facility closures and maintenance updates, which can lead to frustration, especially when specific amenities are unexpectedly out of order.
- Maintenance Needs: There have been comments about the cleanliness of the changing rooms and general upkeep of equipment, with suggestions for more regular maintenance and attention to detail.
- Crowd Management: During peak hours, the gym can become crowded, particularly with younger members. Feedback suggests a need for better supervision and perhaps a reassessment of junior gym times to ensure a pleasant experience for all users.
Overall, Leatherhead Leisure Centre has a solid foundation with its excellent amenities and dedicated staff. With ongoing improvements and community support, it has the potential to maintain and enhance its reputation as a premier recreational destination in the Leatherhead area.
Leatherhead Leisure Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: This is a fairly decent leisure centre with recently renovated and high quality amenities like the gym and courts, however upon buying a gym membership which included health spa facilities like the steam room and sauna imagine my disappointment when The next day I find the whole area borded shut with yellow tape like some kind of crime scene. closed with 0 warning, bolstered with signs saying its out of order for a whooping 6 weeks for supposed further renovations which it does not need. I've paid full price and am not getting what I have paid for, the convenient timing of closing the health spa, steam room and sauna in the winter months inwhich the centre is likely to incur higher running costs seems fishy to me for a supposed non profit organization. unfortunately I am picking up the cost for it. It's a good gym but they need to be more transparent when things are closing and if they do close offer refunds for those of us who have paid for the service
Hi Morgan Dear Morgan MC I apologise for the miscommunication with regards to the health suite when you joined. Currently, the upstairs changing rooms are being refurbished and the entrance to the health suite is via the changing rooms. Therefore the decision was made for health and safety reasons. Can I ask you to email me at [email protected] so I can discuss this further with you please? Many thanks
Fantastic experience: Krav Generation. I went along to the Leisure centre to view the facilities with the view to holding my Krav Maga self-defence classes at the centre. The building was clean, light and well ventilated. The studio was under renovation so it was difficult to see what it looked like but from what I viewed of the rest of the facilities, I am sure it will be up to a great standard. There was ample parking, although the lighting outside could be improved upon. All the staff were friendly and helpful.
Dear Krav Generation Thank you for your 5 star review
Negative experience: I booked a ticket online for the soft play, noting that there was a capacity limit per time slot. When we arrived, it was already extremely crowded—understandable given that it’s half-term. However, about 30 minutes later, a large group of older children wearing bright vests were let loose into the play area. It turned out they were part of a camp run by the leisure centre. The so-called “supervisor” sat by the door, glued to her phone, while chaos unfolded. It quickly became unsafe for my child, and we had to leave after just 30 minutes. This place is just waiting for an accident to happen before they take safety seriously.
Dear V Ivanova I am sorry to hear of your recent visit to the centre and specifically the soft play. I have addressed the issue of the holiday scheme children being admitted into the soft play area and I have spoken to the instructor concerned with a view that this will not happen again. Please can I ask that you contact me with the email address you used to book the soft play please? I am keen to issue you a credit for the inconvenience caused. My email is [email protected]
Negative experience: Great place, really good value for money, great classes and the new gym is fantastic. The only thing letting it down is the cleanliness. The men's changing room is disgusting, everything below knee height could do with a dam good scrub. There's mold in the showers, matted hair in the drain grids, grime around the floor edges and a build up of dirt that's been there up for months, there's a horrible smell and no hot water in the toilets. I've noticed the same dirt smeared on the changing room wall for the last four weeks. I thought when they closed the pool area for December that they would use that opportunity to steam clean and bleach the place but sadly they haven't....!
Dear Glyn Thank you for your feedback. I have spoken to our management team and discussed the points raised in your review. Please be assured that we will make it a priority to improve this area of our service so that it complements what we offer in the gym. In the meantime, we are currently refurbishing the gym changing rooms which will benefit from new showers, vanity units, lockers, hairdryers and lighting.
Positive experience: Really great center! The gym has everything you need and it’s up to date. I love the sauna and steam room. Some areas need to be updated but overall it’s good. My only gripe is that during the afternoons, the gym becomes a pre-teen hangout/babysitting service. I think it’s great that young people are interested in being active, but most of them are not actively using the gym. Instead they’re socializing and using equipment whilst on their phone. Some of them look very young as well. I also wish they had spray bottles and cloths you can grab and take with you from each piece of equipment. I think this would make the hygiene standards higher. It would also be more environmentally friendly than using disposable wipes.
Hi Vanessa Thank you for your 4 star review
Positive experience: Super gym but the weights keep on moving around because of the uneven floor
Hi Hayden Many thanks for your review. We are aware of the floor alignment and we are looking into ways of rectifying it. Thanks again
Negative experience: Junior gym should end at 4.30pm or 5pm latest, far too many kids that dont have a clue what they are doing cramping the gym out and hogging the machines. Also air con should be on at all times, already getting too hot in there.
Dear Mel Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate that you feel Juniors should have a smaller timeslot, however the current schedule is only 2 1/2 hrs per day which constitutes only 15% of the time we are open. The Junior membership is still good value for money at £21 per month, however I do not want to reduce the time slot any further. I will of course take on your comments about the behaviour of Junior members and I will forward this onto my Gym team. Air Conditioning units are set to 18c and will automatically switch off if the temperature falls below that. This must have been the case when at the time of your last visit. Kind Regards LLC team
Positive experience: An excellent gym that I've just joined.....just please please please ask all the teenagers not to sit on their phones on the resistance machines. Every time I go (around 5pm) there are hordes of teenagers, and much of the time they are not using the machines but just sitting on them on their phones. It's not the young'uns themselves that are the problem....I have 2.....they're great.....but please tell them to leave the machine when they are done. Old farts like me need to work out too!
Hi Garratt I agree with your comments and I will speak to our instructors regarding this. Many thanks for your review and feedback
Negative experience: Good gym, too many kids Edit: To clarify I go outside the below hours after work. Still a lot of kids and no staff supervising in the free weights area. They block off apparatus, stand in groups, etc. A lot of them are fine but the ones who aren't are enough to be noticeable
Hi Robert Thank you for your feedback. We have Junior Gym sessions each day between 15.30-18.00 Monday to Friday. It is particularly busy with juniors between these times, but we do ensure that the area is supervised by a member of staff. We also do not let Juniors into the free weights area. Can I suggest you visit at other times in the day/evening to avoid Junior gym sessions?
Positive experience: Really modern leisure centre with staff who are just a bit rude.
Hi Tom Thank you for your 4 star review. I would welcome any feedback on anything specific you may have regarding the staff. You can email me at [email protected]
Negative experience: Staff very rude.
Dear Sharon I am sorry that you had a negative experience when you visited the centre. I am keen to receive more feedback and I would urge you to contact me at [email protected] so I can help resolve any issues.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic soft play. Clean and spacious, reasonably priced. Lovely cafe too!
Dear Joanne Thank you for your lovely feedback about the centre.
Fantastic experience: LLC, You have pulled your revamp out of the top drawer. A new wide range of equipment, a large gym area, can’t wait to see the next phases.
Thank you Carol x
Fantastic experience: I have been a member of this gym for the last 2 years now and so have seen the major improvements that Better have made to make this place the best it can be for all it's members - the brand new gym being a massive part of this. I have no doubt that, in time, the rest of the improvements required will also take place, making it an overall superb destination for all things wellbeing. Not to mention the incredible staff (Susie, Faith and Joseph) who have made this a safe space for people to become the best versions of themselves. Thank you!
Thank you for your review
Fantastic experience: This place is a real jewel in the Leatherhead community and fully deserves the changes and upgrades that are currently being made. 'Better' are doing a fantastic job in getting this gym and it's facilities back up to scratch. The new gym area is amazing and I look forward to further upgrades in the New Year. It's a great place to visit, workout and socialise and the staff are pretty good too !
Thank you Mike
Fantastic experience: I've been a member of Leatherhead Leisure Centre for a few years now, and I'm consistently impressed with the quality of their facilities and, most importantly, the dedication of their personal trainers. The gym itself is fantastic, equipped with state-of-the-art machines and ample space to work out. However, what truly sets this center apart is the expertise and care provided by the personal training team. I've had the privilege of training with Susie Coutts, and I can't speak highly enough of her professionalism and commitment. Susie is not only knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition but also incredibly motivating and supportive. She tailors every session to my specific needs and goals, ensuring I'm always challenged but never overwhelmed. What truly sets Susie apart is her willingness to go the extra mile. She's always available to answer questions, offer advice, and provide encouragement. Her dedication to helping her clients succeed is evident in every session. If you're looking for a gym with top-notch facilities and exceptional personal training, I wholeheartedly recommend Leatherhead Leisure Centre. And if you're lucky enough to train with Susie Coutts, you'll be well on your way to achieving your fitness goals.
Thank you Joseph
Fantastic experience: The new gym is easily the best in the area! Great new equipment, FANTASTIC free weights and “functional” area, with an awesome and unique outdoor gym attached to the side - lots of new things for me to try! Cool mood lightning which changes colour throughout the day.. not to mention the BEAUTIFUL view out of the windows! I am so very impressed! Over the past three days I’ve seen regular gym goers with big smiles, and lots of excitement and enthusiasm for the fantastic upgrade at Leatherhead Leisure Centre! BETTER have done a wonderful job! Thank you! Angie B.
Dear Project 48 Thank you for the 5 star review. It's great that you love the new gym, we have had lots of positive reviews over the last few days which has been very encouraging and rewarding to our team. Thank you
Negative experience: There are some down sides of the new gym area(low ceiling, strong aircon too close to equipment, excessive wrong lighting with spotlights etc)
Dear Sinan I am sorry to hear that you do not like the new facility that we have provided. We have spent over £1m improving this space which has benefitted from twice the amount of equipment compared to the previous gym. This equipment will provide reliability and along with an enhanced workout for our members. I appreciate that you no longer can see trees from the CV area, however we feel that there is still a lot of natural light within the gym and opportunities to see the excellent landscape from the windows located in the CV and functional spaces. I am sorry that you do not like the ceiling, air conditioning and coloured lights, this is the first comment we have received and I will monitor any of a similar kind. Also it appears that you might have missed the plate loaded machines (using a Pin location) are located as you walk in the gym. Please free free to look out for these when you visit next.
Fantastic experience: Wow! I've been training here for years whilst under Fusion and everything was going downhill fast. Since Better have taken over, it has improved a lot. Today the gym had bee moved and we now have 1.5 million worth of new equipment, it is amazing!
Thank you for your 5 Star review. The improvements are still ongoing with 3 new fitness studios, changing rooms, refurbishment and upgrade of the upstairs lobby to help members relax or work either before or after their workout.
Negative experience: This will be the second time uploading this review. I’m not sure what happen to my first review??? I payed £15 for a gym session in this facility. About 2 minutes into learning my mma techniques on the heavy bag I was getting terrible vibes from the pts One then had the cheek to shout at me telling me to calm down whilst practicing my power shots. Similar happened a couple of years ago when I was doing pad work with a family member. The staff are very aggressive and showers are terrible… I couldn’t even bring my self to taking off my socks insidedo not be scammed!!!
Dear Jack I'm sorry that you had a negative experience at the centre. After speaking to our PT's it was apparent that they felt you were using the bag in a way that could intimidate others using the gym. I appreciate that you are used to practicing martial arts, however this needs to be done with respect for other gym users. We are refurbishing the changing rooms in January and this includes replacing the showers. Thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: Good sports centre.
Thank you for your 5 Star review
Positive experience: Refurbishment needed 10 years ago, showers awful, paint pealing off, some showers not working, seams to be they managed to stop main gym roof leak… Tried to call receptionist numerous times I never get call answered - reason there is not enough people or they serving people queuing by the reception (I personally spend 15min! waiting in the queue to sort out their faulty entry card). And refurbishment plan on the window doesn’t give you any better rating. It could be amazing gym in amazing location, but unfortunately not today. Please sort out this gym and I promise I will be back with top ratings from me and my family members!
Ernestas This feedback confuses me as we currently do not have any roof leaks or showers that are out of order. We also have 4 large notice boards located in Reception and outside of the gym detailing our refurbishment plans. Please feel free to contact me via [email protected] so I can understand your feedback Many thanks
Positive experience: Great staff Decent gym
Hi Alex Thank you for your 5 star review The new gym opens in 7 days, let the count down begin!
Positive experience: Brilliant place for activities. spacious parking too
Dear Karl Thank you for your 4 star review
Negative experience: Use to be great and have great staff and cleaner before lockdown - a few nice staff now - but really what has happened to this place?
Dear D B2 I am sorry that you feel that the Centre has deteriorated, however I wanted to take this opportunity to explain the improvements we have made or are making. When Better took over the operation of the centre, there were many building issues that needed to be addressed. In partnership with Mole Valley District Council, over £1.2 million has been spent to fix pool plant, building heating and ventilation, leaking roofs, replaced lights to LED's and re-furbished/replaced playing surfaces in the sports hall, bowls hall and squash courts As well as the above, we have installed an outdoor play park for under 10's and we are spending £1.5m on a new Gym which opens on 18th November. I would be happy to tour you around the facility the next time you visit to highlight what has been done. If you wish to take me up on this offer please can you email me at [email protected]
Positive experience: I have read a lots of Feedback about the “better” leisure centre. Someone said how clean. The changing room clean, but under the machines 2-3 cm dust. The hall way between the changing rooms smell like someone used a week old dirty water to mop. Every single machine old from the Fusion. I can not see any member of team in the gym. And one exercise bike is unusable. There is no internet connection on the displays, so that at least the workout can not be enjoyed. The price is not proportional to the quality and cleanliness!
Dear Nikoletta Thank you for your feedback. I have spoekn to our clean team and we will make sure that the machines are free from dust in the gym. I have looked at these machines and this has already been completed. All 3 exercise bikes are now working, however you may be aware that we have spent over £1.5m on replacing all gym equipment and refurbishing the new gym area which opens on 18th November. This area will be double the size of the current gym and will contain top of the range Technogym equipment and Audio Visual tools in order for you to get the most out of your workout. All machines will also have internet connections
Positive experience: Paid for soft play with outdoor playground entry. Could not access outdoor play area due to doors being locked and manager could not be located or answer the walkie talkie( he had the keys) soft play was very tired and ripped in many places. People consuming own food eventhough it stated this was not allowed. If we had known we could, we would've avoided spending a small fortune in the Lavender Cafe. Womens toilets had no loo roll in any toilet and the toilets in the soft play were permanently closed. All very odd and a poor experience all round.
Hi Suzi I am sorry for the issues that you experienced during your recent visit to the soft play at Leatherhead Leisure Centre. We will be refurbishing the soft play in 2025, however the area will be maintained by our specialist contractor until this time. The toilets are located on the outdoor play side of the soft play, however as this area was closed at the time of your visit, I can understand why you missed this. I have also spoken to my team and told them that the outdoor play area must remain open even if it is raining. We will only close this area if the weather poses a health and safety risk. I would be keen to add a credit to your account, therefore please can you contact us at [email protected] in order for me to do this (I will need an email address and Mobile number) Many thanks for your feedback
Negative experience: It’s really disappointing that the leatherhead leisure centre decided to hire out an out barn for the purpose of a roller skating disco to an external company , roller kings today. when the venue was not suitable for such purpose and in fact dangerous from a health and safety perspective . Children sliding all over the floor as it is as wet and slippy and getting injured as the mole barn was not a surface suitable for roller skating. One would expect a council leisure centre to be a bit more responsible than to allow this on their premises.
Dear Shilpa Myself and the owner of Roller Kings took the decision to cancel the 2nd session today due to excess condensation within the hall. We took this for the safety of all concerned. All tickets will be either refunded or offered another skating session in our sports hall. The Mole Barn has been used for skating since the 1990's and has previously been perfect for this activity. Therefore we had no reason to believe that it would have been different on this occasion. I have to stress this point as we take reasonable steps to ensure that all areas of the building are safe and enjoyable to use. As mentioned, we will continue to offer roller skating at Leatherhead, however after this experience, we will move them to the Sports Hall.
Fantastic experience: Hope to see new equipment soon, it’s really need it here
Hi Igor Thank you for your 5 star review
Negative experience: The condition of the gym has reached a dangerous and completely unacceptable state. One of the running machines has been broken for months, with its electronic parts exposed, posing a serious risk. It’s shocking—literally—that this machine is still in use, as touching even sweaty it could result in electric shocks. This is an immediate safety hazard, yet there seems to be no urgency to fix or even cordon off the machine. What’s even more concerning is that late in the afternoon, many children from the nearby schools use the gym. It’s only a matter of time before someone, especially a child, gets seriously hurt or even electrocuted. How is this being allowed to happen in a facility where safety should be the top priority? Currently, three machines are out of order, and this isn’t just a one-time issue—two of them break down almost every second week. It’s clear these machines are in desperate need of replacement, yet nothing seems to be done about it. Temporary fixes are no longer enough, and the constant breakdowns are severely limiting members' ability to work out properly. This constant cycle of repairs and malfunctions shows a total lack of long-term maintenance planning. Members pay for a functional gym, not one where equipment is constantly broken or unusable. The need for immediate replacement of these machines is urgent—anything less would be unacceptable. On top of that, the overall lack of maintenance and cleanliness is unacceptable. Currenttly, the gym is consistently filthy, with machines left unsanitized and floors covered in dirt. The disregard for basic hygiene is bad enough, but when you add the risk of serious injury from broken equipment, it’s clear that the management has completely failed its members. This level of negligence is beyond frustrating—it’s downright reckless. If something isn’t done immediately, the gym is a serious accident waiting to happen.
Dear Zahid Thank you for your feedback and separate email to Leatherhead Management. As mentioned in our reply to you in email today, we have looked at this treadmill and we have now secured the small circuit board that seemed to be dislodged from underneath of the console. I have alerted the gym team to keep an eye on this until it is replaced in 6 weeks time. As Stuart mentioned this morning, we have an engineer visiting the centre tomorrow morning to fix the 2 exercise bikes as seen in you photos. As you know, we are investing £1.5 million on the gym which includes £500,000 worth of gym equipment. This will be arriving in 6 weeks time. In the meantime, we will maintain all machines and respond to all issues as soon as we can. Thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: I've just started attending Leatherhead Leisure Centre, for swimming & classes and I have to say it has been very impressive. Friendly staff & very helpful. I'm not usually one to go to classes, as being a beginner I always believed I would stick out, like a sore thumb! But this was definitely not the case, when I attended Pilates for the first time this week. It was great, the instructor, Steph, was really friendly and gave great simple instructions. I've re-booked for next week.... I'm also venturing into a water aerobics class next week so watch this space......... Thank you Leatherhead for helping me venture out of my comfort zone x
Hi Dawn Thank you for your review and I hope you continue to enjoy the classes at Leatherhead :)
Fantastic experience: Had a great time with my son at the soft play area. Spoke to one of the children’s instructors called Olivia about booking a party, she was so helpful and gave me a really positive impression of the company!
Hi Eve Thank you for your 5 star review
Fantastic experience: This is the most amazing center I've seen with a large well equipped gym, and many fun exercises classes daily included in the membership. Many!! additional activities like badminton, tennis and a lovely pool. The ultra clean & bright locker rooms, cafe on site, friendly staff and availability of PTs are all icing on the cake
Hi Nancy, Thank you for your lovely review.
Fantastic experience: We have just recently installed an outdoor play area at Leatherhead Leisure Centre. Darren and his team were fantastic to work with.
Thank you for your review Michael.
Negative experience: I'm a regular (Not a member but go on average twice a week- That's £14 quid I give to this company every week -). It's an ok place, reasonably tidy and the showers are always warm. Had an incident today that I just had to review (I hardly ever leave feedback on anything). I always go at 9pm (& it's usually very quit). Today though they had a swim club in (They finish at 9 & then they make the 6 lanes into 3 (Slow / Medium & fast). It was a bit busier than normal tonight. On the website it's clearly advertised as a swim for all so I was surprised when they only made four lanes into two (For slow and medium). There was just one fast lane. When I asked the life guard he informed me that a member of the swimming club would be using the other lane exclusively. He gave no further explanation and was rude. I ended up having to share a single lane with other swimmers (Which is not ideal - Especially when you don't know the other people). I really think you should give your life guards some customer service training. Disgruntled from Leatherhead
Dear Nigel I am sorry that you didnt have a positive visit when you visited the centre last time. The swim club should have left the pool at 9pm, leaving 3 lanes available for the public. I will speak to the lifeguards and the swim club to find out what happened, however in the meantime I have added a £7.00 credit to your account to compensate for your interrupted swim. I see that you mentioned you come twice a week for swimming. Have you considered switching to a pay and play membership which gives you reduced rates each time you book?
Positive experience: Great facilities and equipment
HI Renzo Thank you for your review
Negative experience: I took my girls swimming today and it was an awful experience. The changing rooms are disgustingly dirty and very outdated. The floors are full of hair and dirt. They don’t look like they are ever cleaned. I then took them for lunch at the Lavendar Cafe and again it was awful. The tables were dirty and don’t look they they are ever wiped down. I ordered chicken nuggets and chips and they were undercooked and gross. The staff picked up the cutlery with their hands and there was zero health and safety. I’d say this place is a health hazard. Definitely won’t be coming back.
Dear Bronwyn I was very sorry and disappointed when I read your review as this is not the standard of service we are used to delivering at Leatherhead Leisure. Since your review, the team have deep cleaned the family changing area and I will be monitoring the daily cleaning checks so areas are maintained throughout the day. I have also just done a spot check during our busiest period today (Sunday) and I am satisfied that these standards are now being maintained. I would be keen for you to return and try out the facilities again so you can have a more positive visit, I have therefore added a credit to your account to cover the cost of yesterdays swim. I will forward on your comments regarding the catering to our external catering company, however please accept my apologies on their behalf for the issue with your food.
Positive experience: I am increasingly my rating based on the response from the actual centre to my review, which shows someone might actually care, but let's see, I'm not really at 4 but past a 3...... I still dislike the Better umbrella, it's not just for this centre that we've had issues getting through the Better "security guard" telephony system for.... Just wanted to know if a class was on or not as the website wasn't clear. Got bounced around the stupid telephony system that just wants you to look at the website, then cut off as I ran out of options, called back and navigated to the right option, was put on hold for 10 mins as the customer service lady tried to find out for me then.... Guess what I was hung up on again What really makes me laugh is the recorded message at the start saying "we aim to improve mental wellness" well here's a tip if that's really your aim, loose the rediculously long "we really don't want to talk to you" maze on your telephone system and make it easier to get through to someone who can and will actually help answer questions, even better how about putting me through to the actual reception at the centre I'm calling about, rather than a remote call centre who don't have a scooby. It's not a bad leisure centre, facilities are ok, and reception staff in the centre are always friendly etc.... but we've lived in the area for 18 years and watched prices go up and up. Used to play badminton and squash a fair bit but find it hard to justify the price these days, which is a shame.
Dear Nicola Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you felt the telephone system and customer service centre didn't meet your expectations, I will forward this feedback onto the service manager with a view to making improvements based on your comments. You are also welcome to email us at [email protected] for help if you require it Thank you for your feedback with regards to the Reception team, I will forward this onto them. Price increases fall in line with inflation. A badminton court is only £10.50 for 40 minutes or £12.80 for 60 minutes, which we believe to be good value for up to 4 people to enjoy an activity. These prices are also in line with neighboring leisure centres and providers.
Negative experience: Ripped off!: I came here in March 2024 and used the table tennis facilities for an hour for the kids. It cost us £8.65 all in. They really really enjoyed it. It is now August 2024. I booked online to find the price had gone up to £11.40. This was the only price option online: In their reply they mention a junior price but this isn't available - and I would expect to have it again as it was for my children. I turned up only to be told they are now charging for bat and ball hire now too: £7 rental fee was charged to me for the bats and balls! A total of £18.40 to now use the table tennis facilities for an hour. Not only was I shocked by this, there was no mention of this extra charge on their website nor the option to pay for the bat 'n ball rental in the overall booking. Don't get caught out by this, it's crooked. I objected to this but all I got back were excuses. This wasn't the end; we turned up only to find the table was tucked into the corner of the sports hall with a massive deflated inflatable in the room. Not only was this a hazard but also a display of inherent lazy qualities by the management staff. For £18.40 for 1 hour of table tennis for the children you'd expect the royal treatment. So I complained the inflatable, and they moved it. Overall the experience included being overcharged, hidden costs and having to complain to the manager. They have since reimbursed some of the cost and apologised. I would suggest they optimise the website to accommodate for different types of bookings and make clear any other charges (reasonably priced charges) so as people can make more informed decisions and preparations before coming here. Also, last thing at night or first thing in the morning, have areas tidied up ready for the next day.
Dear Mr Whitelock I am very sorry to hear that you had a negative experience when visiting the centre yesterday. I looked back on the price you paid for the table tennis booking in March and it seems that you were charged the junior price. The cost of £11.80 for the table tennis hire is the right price. I have also spoken to my colleague who spoke to you yesterday and she has assured me that the bouncy Castle was removed and that you played in the area unrestricted for the duration of your booking. I knowledge that the area should have been clear in the first instance and that upon reflection you should have been charged once for equipment hire making the cost £14.90 instead of £18.40. I have credited back the cost you paid and I hope that you will return to use this for a future booking.
Fantastic experience: Set in a nice location, this older type Centre has a good swimming pool- 25 meters long, i think. Water temperature,& purity was very good, & at 8.45 am on a Wednesday, not too full. Changing rooms are compact, have a costume dryer, but the higher lockers are abit of challenge. Showers are uni sex, with two compartment ones for privacy. A pleasarable visit.
Thank you for your 5 star review
Negative experience: We are regulars for swimming with my son who is now 8. Every time we get a different militant life guard needing to see my son prove in a different way that he can swim (he can). He gets upset because he just wants to get on with having fun safely with both his parents with him at all time, and not have to keep proving himself to be worthy of going to the deep end. Please decide what a child needs to do, then keep the consistency so we don't have a confused and frustrated child. We will give it one more go, and if we get the same treatment will have to sadly go elsewhere. I have been swimming here my whole life and taught my son here, and this new company are so worried about libel action they suck the fun out of it. Come on, in other countries (still safe) we are allowed to just get on with it and be trusted.
Dear Dan I understand your frustrations with regards to this rule being imposed. Our staff are trained to make sure that this practice is consistent and that the reasons are communicated correctly so everyone can enjoy the pool in a safe environment. The Royal Life Saving Society highly recommend that all pools follow this practice so to ensure that all swimmers can use the pool without unnecessary risks. The only requirement is for your son to swim 25 metres in a recognized stroke before being allowed to use the deep end of the pool. We hope that you can continue to use the centre moving forwards. I would be happy to discuss this further if you feel further clarification is needed ([email protected]) Thank you again for your comments and we hope to see you and your family at the centre again soon
Fantastic experience: Has everything you need! Friendly helpful staff.
Dear Laura Thank you for your 5 star review Thank you for your 5 star review
Positive experience: Getting better since it got taken over but the website and rules are still more confusing than a rubies cube. I still don't quite understand the timing and rules for junior gym for my son. Sorry, junior adult gym (which is a real thing apparently?!)
Hi DW Thank you for your feedback. We do run Junior Gym sessions where Junior members can visit the gym on their own between 3.30pm and 6pm Monday to Friday and 10-3pm at weekends. Adult and Junior gym sessions are designed for Adult members to bring a junior to the gym and work out together. These sessions run 10am to 6pm daily. Both of these sessions are bookable on the BetterUK App
Fantastic experience: Great venue and lovely floo6
Thank you for your 5 star review Steve
Fantastic experience: Took my daughter and her friend here so they could go swimming. We had a friendly greeting as we arrived at reception. While my daughter and her mate went to change I went into the cafe to wait for them. The area was clean and there was a nice selection of food and drinks available. I didn't venture out of this area and read while I waited. Watch out for a horrendous pot hole in the road just past the reception area as you head towards the car park though.
Dear Grahame Thank you for your 5 star review. Just an update on the potholes, these are being filled in next week when the car park and service road is being re-lined.
Positive experience: A decent leisure center, the gym could do with a revamp, machines looking worn some equipment not working. Showers are absolutely awful and bathrooms could do with better ventilation and extraction.
Dear Darren Thank you for your feedback. We are in the process of reupholstering the existing gym kit (due this week), however there are plans to replace everything by the end of the year (hopefully by September). The changing rooms will also be revamped and the ventilation being resolved in the next few weeks. We replaced the cubicle showers a few months ago.
Fantastic experience: First time here at the Leatherhead Leisure Centre, booked in for a game of Badminton, four courts available, good atmosphere, nice coffee shop, The Lavender Cafe and plenty of free parking. Overall first impression is good.
Dear Sean, Thank you for your 5 star review. Your comments are much appreciated.
Positive experience: Typical leisure centre needs a makeover desperately, but staff and facilities are nice.
Dear Padraic Thank you for your 4 star review. We are upgrading the centre with new gym equipment, new studios, soft play and a upgrade in the changing areas. We hope to complete this by the end of 2024.
Fantastic experience: Played squash with my daughter. Played basketball with my family. Good courts. Facilities here look good though not used.
Dear Ben Thank you for your 5 star review
Positive experience: Seems to be in the way up now it's being run by the Better group
Thank you for your 4 star review
Negative experience: Took my daughter for a swim last weekend - turns out we had use of 1/3rd of the pool because most of it was laned off for a swimming club (no indication of this on the website at time of booking, of course). The 1/3rd open to public was hugely overbooked / overcrowded in a very small space making it absolutely impossible to swim any lengths and a total waste of time + money. Owners are really sweating the assets trying to maximise revenue from the pool but it makes it a terrible experience for users and not worth ever returning to...
Dear Mr Nathwani I am sorry to hear that you didn't have a pleasant visit when you came to the centre at the weekend. 2 lanes should have been reserved for the swimming club, however it seems that more space was allocated. This was a genuine mistake for which we apologise for any inconvenience. As a gesture of goodwill, we have credited your account for the cost of your swim for both you and your daughter. This credit can be used for all future bookings
Positive experience: Great for over threes as restricted view on some activities. Good variety, our grandchildren loved it.
Dear Hilary Thank you for your 4 star review.
Negative experience: Avoid. Everything is just wrong in this gym! I really wanted to stay as it is just in front of mine, but it was really too much!
Fantastic experience: Good Leatherhead Leisure was very good in Surrey.
Negative experience: 16.01.2024 see all images Serious mould and cleanliness issues. Not to mention the rest that doesn’t work (steam room, gym equipment). Charge £50 a month as reference.
Dear The Reviewer Thank you for your feedback. GLL/Better took over the management of the centre on 1st December and during this time we have been working hard with Mole Valley Council to identify and fund improvement works that need to take place. We accept that the defects highlighted in your photos need to be fixed and resolved. We are replacing the showers in the men's gym change on Thursday 25th January. Along with this, we will be spending a substantial amount of money to resolve high priority mechanical and cosmetic items, this will include all of the items you have listed. This will happen in the next 2-3 months across the whole centre
Negative experience: The worst leisure centre ever! We arrived for our pre booked (2 months before) and paid soft play party for our daughter. For them to have double booked!!! No apology, no refund and no contact from them at all! DO NOT BOOK YOUR PARTY with them!
Negative experience: The kids pool is freezing cold, the staff are rude and the manager doesn't know a thing about customer service, none of the showers work. Would never go swimming here again. Why are these places always run by kids that dont care.AVOID!!
Negative experience: Only had 1 functional badminton racquet available to use yet numerous full tubes of shuttlecocks. Tons of tennis racquets and yet no tennis balls. When we went to the front desk we couldn't find anyone for a good 10-15 minutes. Just a restring of the badminton racquets and a couple of tennis balls as EVERY other leisure centre should and, in my experience, DOES have and we would have had a great time. Really quite frustrating. Racquet in photo was one of their better ones...
Fantastic experience: Good place. I had to take my daughter to a dance competition here. Nice people and a very good venue.
Negative experience: I gave up going to the pool as the booking system was far too complicated. Last time I was there showers were cold. They never answer the phone. It was much easier to swim pre covid.
Positive experience: Great facilities (apart from the showers!)
Fantastic experience: Nice decent gym, airy space and very good value, especially when your daughter drags you along!!
Negative experience: Old. Cold. Damp. But it’s the government’s fault. Any multi-millionaires out there wanna do a bit of philanthropy?
Negative experience: Reception does not answer the phone. On numerous occasions, I never managed to get through to reception regardless I call at different days and different times, which is very frustrating. The only way to speak to someone is to drive there. Why is this leisure centre different from all other centres in the UK?
Negative experience: Very poor, Gym should be a kids club, air conditioning doesn't work no hot water to wash in Gym machines not working holes in floor no Gym management, sad place
Fantastic experience: The old gym was easy to criticise, but the new facility is fantastic. It's clean and filled with top-notch equipment. The personal trainers have consistently been amazing, and with these improvements, everything is looking up. It might take a little while for everyone to get used to the changes, but I’m giving it a solid 5 stars!
Thank you Mark
Negative experience: Truly one of the worst websites ever created. Impossible to book anything online, incomprehensible error messages and unable to contact anyone via phone or email. A real shame.
Negative experience: No air con in the gym, keep putting prices up without improving the service, machines always broken in the gym. Shocking facilities
Negative experience: The air conditioning is broken again, they cannot confirm when it will be fixed, and today in the gym I felt like I would pass out from heat stroke. There was no member of staff in the gym to ensure safety of users, and manager seems as though she could not care less. I assume this heat makes it illegal for them to be open.
Negative experience: We are here only for kids swimming lessons and the teachers are great! But that all I can say positive. Appart from always dirty changing rooms, not having a hairdryer or wet clothes spin machine the worst is the reception. My 5yr old got a pass card and didn't. So I'm have to literally ask to be entered every bloody time even thought that me who s paying for the lessons. They can have two people on reception and no matter how long is the queue to get help, they will still be both dealing with same one person. So when I just simply need to ask to be entered for the lesson I have to waste my time waiting my turn when i have like 10 minutesleft to the lesson and still have to change the kid into swimming. Anytime I had issues with lessons booking or catch up, reception would not be able to help. They eihter don't know the system or don't have access but then there is No One else who can help! They never answer the phone when you call them. They don't see you from the desk they are behind. To proff I have kids lessons I have to bloody linf my child. It's a turcher not an experience, I dread the time when I have to bring my kid to the lessons here only because of brainless reception.
Negative experience: The worst leisure centre I have ever used. Not that my list is especially long but this place is awful! The showers are freezing cold as there is no hot water, the baby pool is so cold I didn't want to get in, let alone my baby. The adult pool was warmer. They have this terrible booking system via Fusion which doesn't work properly and makes no sense. They never answer the phone, don't have enough staff and the changing rooms smell of sewers. If we want people to be more active, this is not the way to get them into sports. Leatherhead deserves better!
Fantastic experience: I love the gym and all the facilities, my partner go me a guest pass and we went for the works. AWSOME workout on the cross trainer and then the sauna and steam room. Lovely and spacious and always clean and tidy. The men's changing rooms and lockers were great and offered lots of room. I also appreciate the changing Boothe's. I'm thinking of getting a full membership. My partner has and she's over the moon with the leisure centre. Ohh and the coffee shop is excellent too. highly recommended
Fantastic experience: Fabulous centre staff wonderful could not ask for any better staff they are curtious helpful efficient and helpful too and always have a welcome when you enter the centre such a lovely place to go to everyone of the staff are so caring and happy to help you nothing is too much for them I have used other centres before but none have been so friendly and caring as this centre so please say a big thank you to all of them and also for the help they give me throughout the year as I’m disabled this makes such a big difference to me to see happy people when I go there to swim most mornings Thank you wonderful staff for putting up with me and the help you all give me without a second thought couldnt enjoy my swim without everyone of you and engineers too thanks so very much kind regards Val Cutting ❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic experience: The pool is full of water, take a swim while you're there...
Thank you for your review
Negative experience: New looking building, with lots of potential, but very deceiving! Dangerous + unhygienic. Last couple of times I’ve visited 1) all street lights leading up the drive out - pitch black to walk up, even my phone torch didn’t help 2) receptionists try their best, but there never seem to be enough on hand/any management around to escalate issues/long queues 3) toilet cubicles locked closed + one disabled toilet in use filthy - where’s housekeeping? 4) no hot water - understand there’s no grants for energy bills for leisure centres, but overall this place is heading towards being shut down, unless something radical changes!
Negative experience: Update: This place is falling apart. Most of the machines and the sauna are broken. There is no drinking water. The owners can’t be bother to fix anything. It feels like they are taking advantage to be the only gym in the area but this looks like an abandoned gym. In the 5 weeks I have been a member of the gym, the steam room has never worked and today (and looks like for the rest of the week) there is no hot water which seems like a recurrent issue. The £50 per month membership would be OK if everything worked, but this hasn’t been the case so far.
Dear Pablo GLL/Better have now taken over the management of Leatherhead Leisure centre (from 1st Dec) and we aim to fix these machines as soon as possible. We are also planning a refurbishment which will include brand new Technogym fitness equipment in early 2024. Please bear with us whilst we make these improvements
Negative experience: Came here today with my daughter with her wheelchair ,was the first time I've been here since the kids where small . so 15 years ish . Looks impressive from outside no steps and blue badge parking right outside. That's the good bit over!! The receptionist was on the phone and wouldn't open the disabled access door till she got off the phone and got booking details. We went in the family change it was ok not very clean for 9 o'clock in the morning!! My daughter has lots of problems with her health and trying to swim may help a bit but things need to improve. The young lady who was sitting on the lifeguard step never looked once at the pool ,there were 15 people in the pool most of them elderly at any time there could have been a problem. Surely to be a lifeguard you should be awake and look at the pool ? The disabled access shower was filthy , putting some loo cleaner down the loo doesn't mean the shower and other areas can be left disgusting. There were no hooks on the wall to hang towel and shower seat not near shower Also not clean so wouldn't want to sit in it. The emergency alarms were tied up so if someone fell on floor would not be able to get help. Chose to take clothes to changing room to change as nowhere clean to sit. Yellow liquid on floor in changing room had to avoid wheeling through it. On a positive note nice hot chocolate . On the attempt to leave the building alarmed gate !! Disabled access gate!! was not open so had to wait till the guy behind the counter decided to stop chatting to his colleague, this is really terrible also how would anyone in a wheel chair or people with pushchairs get out of the building in a fire. The way out should have a button to press to get out . This is a health and safety issue sort it out leisure centre. Ohh the guy was so rude also telling me it's an alarmed gate.i know you idiot ,need to send him on a customer service training course on how to recognize how to treat people with dignity. Won't be getting membership will try Dorking swim centre. Epsom rainbow center is cleaner but further away for us.
Fantastic experience: I use to go to the Leisure Center in Epsom....,this one it's much better. Cleaner, less crowded, newer.
Fantastic experience: Good but busy soft play and traditional square pool. Worth a rainy day visit to keep kids happy
Fantastic experience: Great venue for a kids party , all the kids loved it!
Negative experience: They cancel swimming bookings frequently and the gym is run down and had several machines broken for months at a time without repairing them. After I cancelled my membership they continued to charge me despite confirming my cancellation. Avoid like the plague, there are far, far better gyms in the area.
Negative experience: Only cold showers today and swimming pool was freezing. Contractors called out to fix boiler (again!) This is a continuing saga with this dreadful place
Fantastic experience: It has everything for a family. I mainly use the gym and sauna facilities, but on weekends all our family come here for a game of badminton or squash and a dip in a swimming pool. Staff has always been very helpful.
Fantastic experience: The staff at the centre are super friendly and always happy to help. I feel safe there which is important when your on your own especially early morning/late evening. A great way to support the local community rather than a chain.
Negative experience: Children's pool very cold. The main pool was much warmer than children's. Also, you are not able to book a family swimming on the website as "book" button is missing. I let reception know but they were not interested to hear about it and booked us in. Inconvenient! I will look to go swimming somewhere else t.
Fantastic experience: I am so impressed with the friendliness and a big shout out to Ethan who is on reception. He always has a smile (no matter if it is 6.30 am!) and is very helpful! Congratulations Ethan for fantastic customer service.
Negative experience: Update on 27 September 2023 No hot water, again. So no steam room either. Equipment that has been out of order for months are still out. Ceiling not repair so still exposing to everyone using the gym. Chemical used today in he men's locker room is so strong that can probably strip paint off the wall. I was only there for 30 sec and had a headache walking out of the place. Terrible. We are seeking alternative. I wish we could give negative stars for the rating. Update on 8 August 2023 Got no better. Ceiling collapsed about a month ago in the gym and no sign if repair is coming. Another spot has leaking water with a almost full bucket if water. Nothing is happening. Male gym staff (Joe) is rude as if his class is more important than everyone else (other trainers are very nice). Space is limited because of collased ceiling but yet my suggestion of removing out of order equipment to make more space is ignored. Please don't join until new management is here. We are actively looking to go elsewhere. Quite frankly I don't think they care. Update on 20 Nov: steam room not turned on again. Many equipment still out of order for months. No hot water today. The list goes on and on. One or two of the staff are helpful but many sits around talking and not doing anything. Hopeless. Sauna and steam room not turned on after we got there. Mens showers not working again. Many times already.
Negative experience: Came with toddler to watch Dad play sport. Cafe shut down filled me with fear of no coffee, luckily machine (but very hot and no lid, tasted terrible). Soft play good quality but very expensive most families would be priced out…only food is chocolate and crisps from vending machine which we spent a fortune on…says cannot bring own food and drink…hand gel ran out at reception, some ques, lucky reception staff very nice and helpful not their fault about lacking standards
Fantastic experience: I worked in out, I've not been to leatherhead leisure centre in 33 years. Loved it then & still do. Will definitely be returning.
Fantastic experience: Great class brilliant instructor I will be coming back was so fun to de stress.
Negative experience: The review below is from 10 months ago! Nothing has changed and they have increased the prices up. I am now talking with Mole Valley to make Fusion accountable for their negligencies. "Air conditioning in the gym not working yesterday, and being on the warm side for the last week. You cannot do cardio, unless you want to risk dehydration! The air conditioning in the male changing room not working at all, it has been boiling hot for the last months in there, people using bins to keep some airflow going. The smell of the male changing room is also awful, like mould that needs to be properly treated."
Positive experience: Very nice leather center with swimming pool, provides monthly and daily enter.
Negative experience: Pool in a very poor state, rust everywhere, floor and surrounding not clean at all! Showers were the worst though with floor and walls covered with black mold! Not coming back again unfortunately.
Positive experience: Very good.Amazing costumer service and Clean but I would suggest having a few less people there at a time as we were consistently bumping into people but then again it would be very tricky. All in all nice place definitely would go again
Negative experience: Tuesday night is an evening of activities for adults with learning difficulties . I was horrified to hear that the leisure centre receptionist told a parent to keep their daughter quiet who is severely disabled and was in distress having an anxiety attack. Staff should have supported parents and carers not attacked them. Quite an unpleasant experience.
Fantastic experience: Good modern leisure centre, with loads of facilities, good changing rooms and showers and free parking. Played badminton at lunchtime with work colleagues, and the centre was nice and quiet.
Positive experience: Friendy staff, only there for the cat show. (Great show). It was over the weekend. BUT the cafe/ refreshment bar was closed.
Fantastic experience: Went to the soft play for a children's birthday party. My son really enjoyed himself as did the all of the children (4 and 5 year olds). A decent sized soft play for a birthday party.
Fantastic experience: I recently rented the whole soft play for my daughters birthday party (ages 3 and 5) It was very reasonably priced, the staff were good at communicating with me and helpful. Unfortunately the catering is not up and running at the moment but I ordered some excellent pizza in advance from a local restaurant- Piazza Firenze, it went down extremely well and was very convenient. I just had to provide drinks plates and napkins. Only down side was that parents would have liked to have been able to get tea and coffee but the cafe is closed.
Negative experience: Pool boiler breaks more often than not. Pool water cold, showers tepid. No notification to members, only find out when dipping toes in the pool. Girl at front desk and deputy manager rude and unprofessional. To add insult to injury, membership increased after only one month of joining.
