Richmond HarSPA & Club: Opinions
Positive experience: Probably not worth it if it doesn’t come complementary with your hotel stay. I went early afternoon and it was quite busy and full of kids (no fault to the kids but obviously really really noisy…). The hot tubs outside are two and quite small. Overall not worth it if you come as an outside paying customer but a great complementary spa if you are an hotel guest!
Negative experience: I liked the location as it wasn’t far from home, wasn’t too bad , firstly I even enjoyed it, but to be honest, the experience was disappointing. The showers were dirty, and the staff were rude, often making you feel unwelcome, as if they were unhappy to see you. They rarely even replied to a simple ‘hello.’ The outdoor ‘hot’ tub wasn’t hot at all, and its temperature seemed to depend on the time of year. Classes were often fully booked, and the gym’s view of trash bins didn’t help the overall atmosphere. I would have overlooked these issues if the staff had made me feel welcome. P.S. I stopped attending during the last three months of my membership for this reason
Fantastic experience: Very nice spa ! And hotel ! Very much recommend
Fantastic experience: Had a wonderful day at the spa. Facilities were clean, staff were very helpful and overall I had a very relaxed experience. I had lunch at the gate and the staff were attentive and service was quick. The food was good. The only thing I would say is it should be mentioned on the spa website that you only get 4 hours complimentary parking. Overall I’d recommend to others considering coming for a spa day.
Positive experience: The hotel and surrounding location was really lovely would highly recommend visiting Richmond. I upgraded from a standard room to a deluxe and was surprised to find out that didn’t include a continental breakfast. I thought that was a shame as you’re paying quite a lot for the stay so that was a bit disappointing. Also I had booked the stay as a birthday gift for my partner after we checked in we went down to the spa and it was packed out. They should book guests in for time slots as the spa is not huge and it’s easily overcrowded and impossible to use the hot tubs outside and the hydro pool as they are all full already. We didn’t stay in the spa long sadly as it wasn’t relaxing and people were hanging around waiting for a free space in the hot tubs. Not ideal and not what I was expecting, probably better to visit on a weekday as it may be less busy.
Positive experience: Staff super helpful, and spa facilities were brilliant
Negative experience: I'm a member and I rarely go because the services are not up to par, and the amenities are lacking. The pool isn't warm enough, and the hot tubs outside are tepid — they need to be HOT! We have brought this up to staff and they don't seem to care. There also simply isn't enough room to accommodate club members, hotel guests, and spa visitors. They need to figure out a way to expand the space, and definitely need more hot tubs as they are always packed (IMO, the "relaxation room" seems like a waste of space, as is the outside lounge area near the always-packed hot tubs). It feels unfair to paying club members that we can't use the facilities because they are packed with out-of-town guests and spa visitors — many of which are acting rowdy, asking for photos, hogging the hot tubs, etc... (this has happened to me multiple times now). There should be a hose in the hammam so you can wash off the benches, otherwise you are sitting in others' sweat. Other features that would be nice that you'll find at most other luxury spas: herbal tea and fruit-infused spa water on offer, fluffy robes for everyone (not just for spa visitors), relaxing music playing throughout the space... Overall, because the hot tubs aren't hot enough (and/or are always full) and the exercise classes are always booked up when I try to book one... I have no reason to go. Will not be renewing next year.
Negative experience: The spa has clean facilities and good amenities, but the staff has no manners, and lacked professionalism.
Fantastic experience: It is great gym. It has fantastic pilates and yoga classes. In addition, the swimming pool is very good and clean. I am learning swimming and the staff kindly provides me with the swimming noodle floats when needed which helps me to improve my swimming skills.
Positive experience: Lovely treatments
Fantastic experience: Went for a morning glow spa package and I loved every minute of it. Staff was very helpful and friendly, I definitely recommend this great getaway.
Fantastic experience: I went for an afternoon spa with my friend on Friday and working myself in the hospitality industry and I can happily say that everything was great! From the service, to the spa facilities and our treatment everything was divine! The spa has everything you need! I had a massage with a gentleman named Kaul I believed and it was the best massage I ever had! Thanks for a great day
Positive experience: It would have been 5 if someone had shown us around. The girl at the reception was on her own and said we had to wait for her to be free. We had to find our own way around and the bath robe was to small, I am not a large lady so was quite surprised. ♀️
Fantastic experience: Good
Positive experience: I recently did a spa package with a couple of girlfriends. It included a 30 minute back massage and a 30 minute facial. My therapist (I forgot to take down her name) was superb. She was always making sure I was comfortable and her pressure was sublime on my back. When it was facial time she was prepared well and made sure she noted down my skin concerns and wants so the whole experience felt bespoke. I liked that she gave me a list of all the products she used at the end. The hotel has great spa facilities such as sauna and steam room. The garden spas outside were a nice treat on a bitterly cold day. One note of recommendation would be the have a larger sauna room as it can get crowded on busy days.
Positive experience: Had a lovely Spa Day at the Richmond HarSPA complete with Afternoon Tea at the Gate. The sauna and steam room were lovely, and if you want to use the pool it is a decent size. Would have appreciated if there were towels available throughout the pool/sauna area, instead of the one in the locker. The shower rooms are a bit small and dated given the amount of users of the gym and spa, with very small fitting robes and terribly flimsy spa shoes. They should really invest in flip-flops or plastic shoes as it was quite slippery on the wet floors. And update the shower room so that there is more space given the amount of users (and add body lotion!). That being said, the massage therapist (Philippa) was AMAZING and I felt completely relaxed and stretched after running a half marathon the day before. The Afternoon Tea was also quite lovely, with very attentive staff at the Gate.
Negative experience: Do not book this spa. Awful customer service. My partner has been waiting for over 6 weeks for Megan and Chris to send his shorts back which he left at the spa. We called them the day we left the spa and they said they had found them yet still we have heard nothing since. Also the spa is absolutely not worth the money, it is overcrowded with limited sun beds outside. We went to spend the last sunny day outside and the patio was completely shaded all afternoon. We have been to many spas in different countries, i recommend aqua sana in woburn or pennyhill spa in bagshot.
Negative experience: I wish I could give Harspa Richmond a better rating as we have had such excellent experiences at the other Harbour hotels. On the positive side of things the lounge was lovely as were the hydro pool and steam room , the sauna was a little on the small side but still lovely. Unfortunately the Swedish baths were full of wasps and hornets which wasn’t particularly relaxing although the overall environment was calming. Our masseuse Nazanin was absolutely top rate and deserves a 5 star review for her service which absolutely was the highlight .Sadly the service we received from other members of staff was not great and has meant that I can’t in good conscience leave a glowing review. The spa day was a birthday treat for my mum who is in her 80s. While there were a few hiccups to begin with like our treatment times being changed without notice meaning we didn’t get as much time together, we were dissapointed but still hoping to make the best of our time at the spa. After we had had our treatments from Nazanin and were relaxed we were abruptly informed by a member of staff that we had an extra £ 100 to pay- this was as impossible as everything was clearly included in our gift voucher, in black and white and we did not have any extra treatments . Not a nice thing to deal with after coming out of a treatment. They said it was because prices had gone up since the voucher was purchased which we found shocking. Any reputable company would without question honour a gift voucher that is valid including all the services and treatments listed. This was incredibly upsetting for the gift giver, for myself and mum who was meant to be having a treat day. The timing and manner in which this news was delivered was also really upsetting - ‘how was your treatment? Oh great by the way you’ve got to pay an extra £100’ AWFUL. Although they rectified the situation and we didn’t get charged the extra we were pretty horrified that they tried to do this and sadly it adversely coloured our experience of Richmonds Harspa. They also took so long sorting this situation that my husband incurred a fine waiting to pick us up. Really disappointed and expected better.
Positive experience: As a hotel spa it's great, but as just a spa has a few issues. It's a little small but that's not a huge issue. Pool was cold, hydropool outside was tepid, hot tubs outside really really need a clean (you could feel the gunk building up on the seat / side) and they used so many chemicals it hurt your nose to sit in them. The 'relaxation room' is located next to the spin room / gym studios and is not sound proof so when a class starts all you can hear is them screaming about gym stuff - very much not relaxing. Some relaxing music might have done well to drown a little of that out but there was none playing. All of these issues wouldn't be difficult to fix so hopefully they do.
Positive experience: Went for a weekend getaway at Richmond Harbourhotel which has complimentary access to the spa facilities. Very aesthetic pool and was not too busy. Hydro pool & outdoor hot tubs did get busy at times and you would have to wait for your turn. The Scandinavian hot tubs did have quite a high level of chlorine as it caused our eyes to sting quite a bit. The steam room was volatile and we experienced it in both states of having not enough steam and also too much steam. Overall a pleasant experience but I would visit in the weekdays next time!
Positive experience: This is a pleasant spa. I spent the afternoon here having been given a voucher, so I’m not sure how much it costs. The pool is clean and, since I was there in the mid-afternoon, it wasn’t busy. The jacuzzi is among the most boisterous I have ever encountered, and when it stops, you can automatically turn it on again by pressing a button. The sauna was tiny but very good. The steam room was good when it was on, but it wasn’t always on. The staff were all very nice. The main thing that lowers my score on this place is the size of the robe. I am not a tiny waif by any stretch of the imagination, but I have never had a robe that didn’t close around me. This one didn’t and I noticed I was not alone. Even so, it made me feel very large on a day that was supposed to be a treat. Please get some bigger robes!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic staff. Beautiful relaxing, calm experience. Nice outside space. Free parking with spa day experience
Fantastic experience: Beautiful relaxing free parking very nice staff
Fantastic experience: Top quality luxury health club with a wealth of great studio classes and superb Spa facilities too.
Fantastic experience: An amazing peaceful space to relax and unwind. I have been a member for a couple of months and am really pleased to have joined. The pool is quiet and clean, the steam room and sauna always have spaces and the outdoor garden is incredibly beautiful. Wether it's for a special treat or a regular visit, this spa is one of the best in London and I've been to a few! The cleaning personnel is always available and great at looking after the space, Megan at Reception is so wonderful and Chris-James is super helpful and solution focused. I couldn't be a happier member!
Negative experience: Great location and potential but seems to not care about maintenance at all. Showers have rust and mould and frequently are cold or low pressure. Shower product dispensers are often broken. The costume spin drier has been broken for over 4 weeks. Pool is often cold and layout means you have to walk down cold corridor to get to changing rooms. Door to outside can easily be left open letting cold air in. It gets very splashy as soon as one person is going fast and also no signs on lanes can become a free for all when busy.
Positive experience: Facilities often dirty with muddy floors, towels on floor, mouldy showers. Steam room shower often dirty too. Packed on weekend and not respected by day spa attendees.
Fantastic experience: Makes going to the gym a pleasant experience
Fantastic experience: Good classes, not crowded. Excellent facilities.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place, amazing people! Fantastic massage
Negative experience: Very bad design, tiny sauna and small steam room, which has no shower hose inside to wash off the benches, so you literally sit in someone’s sweat :( whoever approved this was an incompetent amateur. Any steam room must have a shower hose to wash off sweat after using it, otherwise it’s very unhygienic. The steam room temperature is always too high, makes it impossible to stay longer than 5’.. complained to the staff, but they are no help and keep saying it’s always the same temperature. The “cafe” is just a decoration, nothing is served there. The relaxation lounges occupy so much space and hardly anyone uses it. They could have done so much better with that space!
Negative experience: The management in this place is insistent.. pretend to be a posh place, but it's not! Talkative therapist and dirty faciliy
Fantastic experience: My wife and I had a wonderful and truly relaxing experience at HarSPA. We took the refresh spa morning package which includes treatments. I realised far too late that my pregnant wife couldn't have the massage that I'd scheduled but the team were very kind and swapped for a facial with no prior notice from me. The treatments were excellent, the facilities were top notch, spotless and all of the staff were helpful and friendly. Some people have said the pool is too cold - it isn't if you want to do proper swimming - if you want to sit around, the hydropool and hot tubs are what you need. Also we went on a Thursday morning in October - it was very quiet. If you go on a weekend or school holidays it will be busy and there will be kids because it's a hotel spa, so avoid these times. Lunch at The Gate was included and it was delicious, we even saw a well known sporting celebrity eating there, so it must be well regarded! Highly recommended.
Negative experience: Badly thought out facilities, kids in the jacuzzi without their parents and staff said nothing. If I wanted to join a youth club I’d join a YMCA. Way too crowded, not enough wall hooks for robes when using jacuzzi, sauna etc. Black mildew on grouting in showers so they aren’t cleaning regularly enough.
Positive experience: It's a lovely facility but way too crowded the day that I went. I would give a 4 stars for the massage. After the 1 hour massage. I wasn't able to go into sauna or any jacuzzi pools because it was too many people.
Negative experience: Staff are utterly useless and the whole experience was a disaster. Would recommend to nobody. Cold pools, kids swimming in pool so extremely loud, broken whirl pools.
Fantastic experience: Lovely experience. Indoor pool, outdoor jacuzzi, hydro pool, relaxing spa treatment, and afternoon tea! It’s a nice little calm oasis and would come again
Positive experience: I'm a member and find it impossible to call and speak to staff on the phone. Yes the pool is a tad cold but it's never too busy which is a plus.
Negative experience: Booked spa day for my friends birthday. Was quite disappointed. The therapist came to collect us for our massages however had the incorrect names. We explained that we must be the wrong clients, however they told us they would take us for our treatment anyways. The therapist talked though my massage after me stating on my card that I wanted a quiet treatment. The massage was cut short, after I explained to the therapist that I paid for a 45 minute treatment she stated that on the card it says 30. I again explained to her that I was not the person on the card. After waiting for my friend to come out of her treatment we headed down to the pool, which was freezing. Both of us could not use the pool as it was too cold. Overall was a disappointing experience.
Negative experience: Shocking service to try and get an appointment.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful experience! Outdoor wooden Hot tob, beautiful garden and relaxing massage!
Fantastic experience: Spent a lovely day at this relaxing spa retreat. Lovely facial and manicure, use of the spa pool and hot tubs as well as the gym. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Fully renovated by the eponymous hotel chain, the club has a welcoming café with floor to ceiling bay window on the swimming pool. The spa has wonderful resting beds that you can enjoy before and after your treatments, a peaceful retreat. Sauna and steam bath. The changing rooms have a luxurious wooden feel. Cosy salon with water fountain, modern sea side decor.
