Bannatyne Health Club: Opinions
Positive experience: Friendly warm and welcoming
Fantastic experience: So far so good! Moved here from another local gym, clean and tidy facilities Nice, friendly & knowledgeable staff who showed me around (kye I believe!) I’m a gym user and haven’t had a chance to check out the sauna/steam room yet, as for gym equipment..top of the range cardio machines. Would be great to see some more resistance & pulley machines but apart from that great gym where you can actually get a decent workout without crowding !
Negative experience: Lots of equipment broken or not working, and very cold pool, jacuzzi and sauna
Thank you for your review, we will continue to try and improve the service we offer, Please feel free to email [email protected] to discuss further. Thanks
Positive experience: UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ORIGINAL RANT..!!!! BACK TO BEING 4/5 stars… Original Rant (28th jan) I will update this complaint/ outcome when it’s sorted out, but as it stands, the situation is thus…. I went to Bannatynes this evening as normal (between 4.30 and 7pm) to swim…thats all I do 4 or 5 days a week. I’m a swimmer. I’ve never even set foot on the stairs to the gym etc. I’m a fast swimmer… very fast… lane 1… the fast lane obviously. But tonight I find that the swimming lessons for kids has moved from its normal place in the free swim/plodding lane to the fast last. Fast lane is now closed between 4 and 7pm. I moved down to the middle lane but was totally unable to do a training session as it had 3 or 4 people doing their normal medium pace because it’s the slow medium paced lane..fair enough… so I got out. I went to the desk and asked about this stupid idea only to find out tonight (28th jan) was the first night and it’s actually 5 days a week… 17 days ago I paid my membership in full (£600+) as I always do. Bit of a kick in the teeth. Between these hours is also the only time I can go swimming due to work etc As I said I will update this my moan once I’ve heard back from the general manager (he’s been emailed) UPDATED….UPDATE 29th ISSUE RESOLVED…THE OFF-SITE CONTRACT CONDUCTING THE SWIMMING LESSONS WERE TOLD THEY WOULD HAVE A LANE TO TEACH IN BUT IT WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO EFFECT THE MEMBERS (the last bit wasn’t relayed to the swimming instructor so he set up in the fast lane) SWIMMING LESSONS ARE NOW MOVED BACK TO THE FREE SWIM LANE. A new rope lane decider is being sourced to split that free swim lane in two for lessons at the stated times…4-7 pm
Hello Matthew, Thank you for speaking to me with regards to this. If you need anything further at all then please feel free to email me on [email protected] Thank you
Negative experience: Went into this club on 29th December 2024 . I was informed by member of staff if I joined I would have a 14 day cooking of period were I could opt out on line …. The date is 9th of January 2025 i I decided to opt out due to private reasons .. There were personal issues that I did not want to go into but they were demanding I give them Doctors letters and other things to get out of this membership . So be cancelled my direct debit and would not go near them with a barge pole .., There very nice on reception but do not even stand up to there word in regards to cancellation .,, But be cancelled my direct debit now and will see them in court if they want to take me there … There were a couple of reasons I could not continue with this membership and they were of a sensitive nature and I ain’t jumping through hoops from them or anyone . Ridiculous!!!
Hello Brian, I would be more than happy to assist you further with this. I have popped you an email so please respond and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this for you. My email address is [email protected] Thank you
Negative experience: Gym is good, pool ect is good, but turning up at 6am when you have leave for work at 7 and there not open on time, waiting till almost 620 is not good enough
Hello Hayden, we are sorry that your experience did not match your expectations at our Bannatyne Health Club - Eastbourne. We are thankful however, for your kind words with regards to our facilities. Should you wish to discuss in further detail please email [email protected]
Fantastic experience: I've only been a member since the beginning of November & haven't used all the facilities yet. So far though, the staff are very friendly, easy to chat to. The gym equipment I've used has been fine. Always lockers available. Plenty of parking.
Hello Mark, Thank you for your feedback on the facilities and the staff. We are glad you are enjoying your experience and happy to have you onboard. Should you wish to discuss in further detail please feel free to email [email protected]
Positive experience: Much improved with new management. Machines fixed quicker and must be better maintained as they don’t seem to break as often. The not so happy staff seem to have jogged on. Much better than a year or 2 ago. Current member Nick B.
Hello Nick, Thank you for your feedback on the facilities and the staff. We are glad you are enjoying your experience. Should you wish to discuss in further detail please feel free to email [email protected]
Negative experience: Been a member of this gym for soo long now but every time I go there is something wrong - either a machine broken or waiting for maintenance - the boiler has going down so can’t even enjoy the spa facilities - steam room is down etc etc - really needs a massive maintenance upgrade or sort all these problems for members to stay as it’s being talked about by ALOT of members. Staff are good and always welcome shame about the building
Hello Josh, we are sorry that your experience did not match your expectations at our Bannatyne Health Club - Eastbourne. We are thankful however, for your kind words with regards to our staff. Should you wish to discuss in further detail please email [email protected]
Fantastic experience: Just wanted to come on here and say that Chris, one of the cleaners/maintenance people at Bannatyne Eastbourne is one of the most hardworking people I’ve met. He really looks after the gym, equipment and pool facilities to a really high standard. I know he wants to be based more around the gym floor and I hope he gets there asap!!!
Hello Liam, Thank you for this fantastic feedback about Chris. He is a real asset to the team. If you wish to discuss anything further then please feel free to email [email protected]
Positive experience: Needs a refurb or reduced rates
Hello Norah, we are sorry that your experience did not match your expectations at our Bannatyne Health Club - Eastbourne, should you wish to discuss in further detail please email [email protected]
Positive experience: Nice gym, friendly people. Changing rooms and pool really need a refurb though, with the price of membership you’d think they’d be able to do this.
Hello Joanne, Thank you for your review of our facilities. Should you wish to discuss anything further than please email [email protected]
Positive experience: Facility maintenance notices not being updated in the website or notified to the members.
Positive experience: Needs a refurb getting tired
Hello Dave, we are sorry that your experience did not match your expectations at our Bannatyne Health Club - Eastbourne. Should you wish to discuss in further detail please email [email protected]
Negative experience: I am extremely disappointed with the condition and management of this fitness facility. Many of the gym equipment are not working, and the lockers are broken. The equipment is outdated, with an excessive number of treadmills but very few quality machines. The changing rooms are moldy with broken lockers, and the showers are often closed without any explanation. When the steam room is working, it's so rare that it feels like winning the lottery, resulting in an overcrowded sauna. Additionally, there are significant maintenance issues, such as a collapsing ceiling above the jacuzzi and broken tiles in the pool. Considering the membership fee is £60, this is unacceptable. The staff is indifferent and rude, and the manager's response to complaints is simply to suggest finding another gym. My advice: don't waste your time and money on this gym.
Negative experience: Gym quality very poor always something broken up and not being fixed for weeks, wobbly benches, cable machine usually out of order. I had with them no contract deal (most expensive one) and I've been told by a member of staff that can be cancelled anytime but after canceling my membership at beginning of January they still tried to charge me for 1 month notice period which isn't fair to customer who left in this gym over £1600 in 24 months!
Positive experience: Went to check this gym out. It's OK, but didn't feel comfortable with the gym layout. Pool is good seams they are still having problems with their computer system and booking classes so not for me.
Positive experience: Lovely gym nice and clean great experience until I got to the cafe the woman didn't know what she were doing an hour wait for panni which actually was sour do bread toasted so over cooked I couldn't eat it rock hard the coffee OK but I'd avoid cook food wasting your money thank-you for the experience!!!
Negative experience: Used Bannatyne for 8 months. Had no issues, but when I contacted them about hiring a personal trainer, I got no response. I just kept getting told that they were waiting on the PT manager to provide them with the information. I ended up signing up to another gym and will let my Bannatyne membership expire and then cancel. There is nothing like spending £70 a month on a membership, only to get completely ignored when looking to spend even more money - great business practice! Signed up to another gym and have weekly PT sessions included in membership, which still comes out cheaper than my bannatyne membership, and they actually respond to you!
Negative experience: Scam warning. Wife was gifted a 3 month membership by a friend and at the end instead of it finishing as she was told by a member of Bannatynes staff they automatically put her on a monthly payment which they refuse to cancel and have threatened referring to a debt collector. Very aggressive. Wife hasn’t even been there since before the 3 month membership lapsed. Beware of signing up for any short term membership you will probably get scammed.
Positive experience: Good range of classes- particularly enjoying Pilates at the moment. Changing rooms are well equipped and nice and clean. Pool and steam room are really nice. Only downside is you have to be quick to book in the classes as they get booked up quickly.
Fantastic experience: Best gym, I love it
Fantastic experience: Top class you can charge car have a Healthy snacks swim work out but. NOT IN THAT ORDER
Negative experience: Grubby. Needs a lot of tlc. Should be adults only for that price.
Positive experience: Unfortunately much of the cardio equipment is in need of some TLC with TV's for instance non functional, & when you get a picture, there is no sound. Class bookings are frustrating with them filling on release only for people to cancel a few hours before. For a mid range to premium priced gym you expect everything to be working fully. Maybe replacements are needed. I'm currently in contract and will be consider moving to pure gym which I imagine others will also do. Some simple things could be done to improve the customer experience such as notices on the machines that are not fully operable. If improvements are in the short term pipeline, they should be shared to encourage renewals. I'd like to br able to renew, but the tiredness of equipment is definitely something to factor in. Lack of engagement with reviews is worrying.
Negative experience: Never enough yoga classes. Spaces booked up within minutes and the waiting list can be double. Promises of more classes aren't enough to make sure you can get a space at classes in your availability. Ended up paying £60 for 1 yoga class a month despite trying to book 2 classes a week. Cancelled membership because I'm not getting what was advertised and I've paid hundreds for a service that doesn't provide. Pool room is cold and steam room is frequently broken. No ventilation in disabled / family changing. Sometimes the carpark is full. Notification system doesn't work so often we'd turn up to be disappointed when what we went for wasn't working. Most of the staff are lovely and the hot tub doesn't turn off so an extra star for them. Overall I'd say don't tie yourself in because it costs to get out.
Positive experience: Very nice and conveniently located for me( close to Hamped Park) swimming pool makes it all worth it, especially now ( (Nov )
Negative experience: Misinformed about membership costs at sign up, don’t be fooled by the short term memberships - they mean nothing and just charge you more. When we tried to query it we were challenged and the customer service experience was awful.
Fantastic experience: Went for a pre joining introductory viewing of this club. Looks good. Look up for joining offers every month.
Positive experience: I use this place for the gym side - it’s got everything you need for a good workout. Everyone cleans equipment after use which is super handy! Unfortunately sometimes equipment is broken which is completely understandable but it does take a fair amount of time for it to be fixed. Changing rooms could do with a revamp for sure, some areas are slightly grubby. To use the swimming pool area, you really have to be able to withstand the pure shock of chlorine when you walk in… amazing it’s clean but wow… your eyeballs are literally tearing, red and stingy from the heavy fumes. The cafe and staff are amazing… no doubt!! Overall it’s alright, staff are friendly but I personally think it’s overpriced and after hearing one member of staff discuss their client PT sessions rather negatively to another staff member has put a slight downer on this review.
Positive experience: Lots of classes and equipment. Staff really helpful and friendly. Changing rooms could do with a revamp. The staff try hard to keep it clean but there is broken tiles, faulty showers and the swimming costume spinner always seems to be breaking in the female bathrooms.
Positive experience: Looking tired and in need of a make over, showers need upgrading, dirty in places !
Negative experience: Full of wannabe middle class scum. A truly toxic environment, feels sterile and uninviting. They refuse to shower before using other facilities and when you question them you are left fearing for your safety. The staff will not get involved through fear of their own safety.
Negative experience: As I tried too explain too the chap on the desk my voucher was brought for me but what with pandemic and having knee replacement I couldn’t make the date so got on line too be told they had increased the date too 15/8/2027 still wouldn’t honor it disgraceful
Negative experience: Low service .
Fantastic experience: I've been going here since January, the staff are very pleasant, the pool is lovely and the steam and sauna are bliss, the gym is fully equipt and clean and I find it good value for money!
Positive experience: Just started, need more time to review it.
Fantastic experience: Relaxing
Positive experience: Great aqua classes daily
Negative experience: I loved the idea of joining this club because I had the option of joining for only three months, to my surprise they made me sign a contract for six or one year, for which I was surprised they call me by phone they write me emails saying what I have to pay the delays more than £500, that is not fair, not care for customers only profits in taking vantage. Not happy, don’t deserve for a star.
Positive experience: Moved fron 'The Gym' as it was too busy to have a proper workout. Bannatynes is definitely less busy but very basic, old-fashioned, and small. 57.99 a month for a membership is pretty overpriced for what it is, but it has everything I need. It's not overcrowded, and the staff seems really nice and helpful.
Fantastic experience: Friendly, helpful staff. Amazing protein smoothies. Fun fitness classes delivered with passion and knowledge. Clean gym floors with plenty of equipment. All team members are approachable. One small criticism the pool could be a tad warmer it's a leisure facility.
Negative experience: Extremely run down, plenty of machines looking tatty and with broken parts. Toilets broken for weeks. Also the toilets are extremely run down, and look gross. Foyer looks dated and shabby, mainly the carpets and sofas.
Positive experience: Nice and clean with friendly staff
Negative experience: Not very happy men's shower area are dirty and signs of black mold steam room requires a deep clean and retiling gym equipment left to the point of the padding is completely deteriorated not a premium gym at all
Fantastic experience: I really love Bannatynes. It is warm and welcoming. The swimming pool is clean and spacious. There is a hot tub, steam room and sauna which I enjoy using after a workout. The gym is also spacious and welcoming. The changing room facilities are good (hot showers, costume drier, hairdriers, lockers, large mirrors, plug sockets etc). It also has a cafe with comfy seats and friendly staff. My only complaint is that it sometimes takes a while for things to get repaired.
Fantastic experience: Can you do a day pass thankyou
Negative experience: Disappointed after a visit today for a tour and potentially signing up - the facilities are good and clean, but was really let down by the reception staff who couldn't care less about getting new members to join! Busy chatting between themselves, doing their hair whilst talking to me about memberships and not very helpful with prices etc just told to do it online! Compared to a tour at David Lloyd this was sub par. Not joining in the end!
Fantastic experience: Charge my car had a nice coffee
Fantastic experience: fantastic why I wasn't member long time ago. I really recommend
Negative experience: Says the gym closes at 8pm on a Saturday (which is a pathetic time to shut a health club on a weekend ) arrive at 7.30 to get a 30 minute session in was refused entry by a rude receptionist telling me the club is now shut , disgracefull to be honest and disgusting customer service!!!!
Negative experience: It looking very tied it could do with a good clean and painting in certain areas theres mould growing on the large window area there lots of rust showing in the pool area if you want me rate it i give a 2out of 10 for £55.99 amonth it not worth it i would be happy to pay £35 or£45 a month
Fantastic experience: Ask Max for a HealthSmart programme.
Negative experience: Not what you would expect for over 50 quid a month. Swimming pool is OK and sauna and steam room hot tub gives it the 2 star but the gym in comparison to what you pay is not even close. If your just looking for gym it's not the best choice. Plenty of much better gyms and equipment for half the price a month.
Fantastic experience: Staff are lovely, I could not praise them high enough
Negative experience: Took a 3 month contract here in light of living in the areas temporarily. I’m having to pay for 4 months to enact the cancellation terms and conditions… The 3 month contracts cost more monthly, still had to pay a joining fee and now have to pay an extra month on top - not a clear and transparent firm which is really disappointing.
Negative experience: this place is filthy , dirty floors sticky grimey machines ,faulty showers , a real disappointment . the grime has been there for weeks if not months , in a time when hygiene is paramount this dirty place doesn't bother.AVOID!!!!!!!
Positive experience: Good morning in Heidi's two classes one of the best instructors
Negative experience: Bought a voucher for my other half direct from Bannatynes which was never sent. I tried calling but 2 year's after Covid started they still haven't arranged a system where they can answer their phones (?). The automated system advises that we need to email. I have emailed repeatedly but still no response. Took my money but have not given us the voucher. Disgusting. Avoid avoid avoid.
Negative experience: Been a member here for about 4 years. I haven't been going so had lost my wristband, that you need to get in etc. I explained this at the desk and the guy just said " you want a new wristband then" . I said yes please. He got the wristband and said that's£5 ok..I said " really?" No explanation given the guy just said "yes". I stood for a few seconds contemplating not paying but paid. The guy didn't even say Thank you. I object as I have been paying over £50 a month for 4 years and had never lost the wristband before. Just feel they see their customers as cash cows. The gym itself is ok. The machines are ok if becoming dated, and a few don't have the internet access that they should. The pool, steam room, Sauna and Jacuzzi are all good.
Fantastic experience: Good place , would be nicer if it more affordable
Positive experience: Actually I awarded it three and a half stars but it gets four because the staff are extra friendly and helpful. All the usual facilities plus a limited number of Les Mills classes make this a good but not great gym. Showers need some TLC. Easy to find with plenty of parking for members.
Negative experience: Bannatynes need to pull their finger out and get large bold print signs in the changing rooms and pool area asking users of these facilities to shower first. People are using pool area and facilities without using the showers. Absolutely no excuse and disgusting. I have spoken to the management a couple of times and nothing has been done to combat this unhygienic issue. I will not be renewing my membership unless something is done about this. It makes me feel sick. I don't know when these people last washed or used a toilet.
Fantastic experience: Lockers need attention
Hello Tyrone, Thank you for your feedback on the facilities. Should you wish to discuss in further detail please feel free to email [email protected]
Fantastic experience: Love the gym here!!
Negative experience: I had been a member for many years . Their mask policy is discriminatory to those unable to wear a mask and treated a friend of mine like a leper and made her talk to a manager outside in the rain Luckily many Including myself have moved to other welcoming gyms . You need to stop this mask mandate for those that are exempt The place had become very unfriendly and the staff were very rude , it felt like a bunch of children were running it . They charge you a fee even after leaving . Avoid
Negative experience: I have COPD . And I am exempt from wearing a mask as it effects my health and breathing ability . They refused me to join and enter ! They have broken the law equalities act and disability act. Disgusted ! Never felt so isolated.
Fantastic experience: I miss this place
Negative experience: They have decided to close the club earlier everyday to save money on bills and wages. The staff are stuck up and rude. Go to a gym that cares about it's members well being and not profits.
Positive experience: We went in with the day pass, the place not bad and all, ,gym section not too big. Swimming area and the steam room with the sauna very pleasant, changeing room is very nice and spacious. Only one thing what was not very nice one of the member clearly did not liked us in the gym and made some comments about we are being and taking up space from the actual members...but even stuff was very nice to us and helpful with getting into the club. Would recommend!
Fantastic experience: ITS my Happiness pill, visit Bannatynes filling down ,one hour of aqua, yoga or Palates and I'm a different persons, round it off with friends & coffee ,wonders!
Negative experience: I came down to use the gym on Sunday the 11th and as I am medically exempt from wearing a mask I was refused entry unless I bought a mask. I was told "we don't do exemptions here" which I think its absolutely disgraceful not to mention illegal. I was told because its a private company they're all of sudden allowed to make up their own rules and the government rules don't matter.. apparently. The Staff didn't even try to see my side and were very dismissive. it was very embarrassing for me as I hate confrontation and felt anything I said was falling on deaf ears. I cant see how this health club gets away with it, it is discrimination to turn a paying customer away for no good reason. the government rules state a mask must be worn unless medically exempt which is not allowed to be challenged by any person. I am not very pleased with my short time at the gym and am seriously thinking of leaving already.
Fantastic experience: Great place great PT Will well priced
Fantastic experience: The nicest experience when it comes to duty free work out
Fantastic experience: Great !!!!!
Positive experience: A very mixed review! I feel the gym has great facilities and is relatively quiet most of the time. The cleaning staff and PTs seem great from what I’ve seen. However, I feel the receptionist staff aren’t the most professional. Recently, I have experienced four members of staff closely grouped together, chatting at the reception who all went silent and looked at me when I walked into the building (a lovely welcome(!)) And I have also noticed a female member of staff has a habit of sitting on the reception counter and swinging her legs (even when customers are walking past). (This doesn’t apply to Aaron, he is very helpful and always comes across as professional).
Fantastic experience: Upper-mid-priced gym with a great range of classes, lovely pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Kept very clean and Covid safe. Changing facilities are pretty good. Staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: So glad to be back xx
Fantastic experience: Excellent customer service and equipment
Positive experience: Covid compliant. If you pick your times well not massively busy.
Negative experience: Lovely place for more elderly. Also don't allow a swim only membership
Negative experience: No response from head office. No answers to emails, and seemingly only interested in money. Rude staff. No proper induction. Very disappointing experiences. No professionalism at all. Never again!
Fantastic experience: Well organised and so good to get back in the pool!
Fantastic experience: It nice and at the right times really calm. Classes are amazing and worth going too. Only thing is there could be more cosy lights on evening ❤️❤️❤️
Negative experience: They will steal your money, even when you leave. They will rip you off for parking at their own facility then say the parking is managed by someone else so we can't cancel the £100 parking charge you've recieved, even though its their car park. Avoid it like the rona.
Negative experience: Been a member for 15 years, went in today to suspend it for 6 months, on suspension you normally pay £10 retainment fee, which I’m fine with. But here’s the kicker. During lockdown, all accounts were frozen for FREE for over the past 4 months. When I went to suspend my account, they said would charge me £40 up front to suspend it, charging me the £10 a month which were free for everyone during lockdown the gym has been closed. Totally find it pathetic and disrespectful charging someone for a service which wasn’t available due to a closer. Totally pathetic.
Positive experience: Nice and clean, ok gym!
Positive experience: Great staff and free parking are the highlights of this Eastbourne gym. It has a good selection of cardio and weight equipment but it’s old, tired and not the best quality. It has a sauna but it doesn’t get hot because of a leak in the roof. The swimming pool is good. The gym is kept clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful
Fantastic experience: Love it there all the classes are top nice and friendly staff and open to late which is best for me :)
Positive experience: Good gym, pool and all facilities. Car parking, cafe etc
Positive experience: Only used the elec charger facilities
Positive experience: Relaxed gym with good facilities, although showers could do with being rinsed down more frequently...
Negative experience: Friendly staff. Food is good for the most part. Pool is cold, sauna is always hot nice steam room and hot tub good gym facilities. For what you pay its sometimes not worth your money boiler breaks down a lot so pool either closed or cold.
Fantastic experience: Great pool sauna and spa.. so relaxing.. loads of great classes.. staff were friendly and I am now a full member.. this comes with loads of benefits too such as 2x friend day passes n lots more!! Would recommend and have recommend already to friends, I've also now joined Hastings which is a higher grade, but only 10 pounds more than just tier 2 Bannatynes health club, it's worth doing as you then can use many different Bannatynes around your area etc, I love this place, I went yesterday at Eastbourne and I love the pool, just check what are good times to swim if you enjoy it more quiet. Love love love!
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out, friendly people
Negative experience: Despite how expensive this place is to be a member, the parking limits you to a maximum of 3 hours or you get an automatic £100 fine. So if you're planning on making a day of it, massage, gym, swim, juccuzi, some lunch etc, don't bother, because you don't have time.
Fantastic experience: Friendly atmosphere with a professional team
Fantastic experience: Great place to go very cheap well knowledgeable you will lose weight you will get fit
Negative experience: They said they were fully knowledgeable about ashma but when I had an attack they told me to breath into a paper bag!
Fantastic experience: Great
