Nye Bevan Swimming Pool

Fantastic experience: I love this place. I can’t believe the council has the audacity to try and shut this place down! What’s going to happen if the pool shuts down and primary schools have no swimming education. I’ll never forgive the council if they shut the place down. I’d give everything to keep this place open

Positive experience: Basic swimming pool but my kids always have fun and want to go because we make it fun. Shame the awful council is looking to close this.

Negative experience: This pool is so unhygienic because there is hair everywhere, plasters, wasp infestation and ant infestation and the pain is coming off the wall I don’t recommend

Positive experience: Honest review of Nye Bevan: First of all, it is a rough building. However, it serves its purpose, I’ve been coming here for 13 years… and it’s still going strong. Staff are friendly (lifeguards could pay more attention.) Facilities are good and the pools are clean which is good. Think it’s being teared down in March, which will be annoying as it’s a good place to go with the kids. Changing rooms are a bit dirty, so they could be done with a clean. Overall, good place to go, not the prettiest to look at, but it serves its purpose!

Negative experience: Walking into the pool was like something from a Cold War Steve scene. The two children in the pool looked like they'd been made to get in, soon to be followed by my own unfortunate offspring, all of them watching in bemusement as three faded beach balls, two half-eaten foam noodles and a few foam mats bobbed aimlessly around, all of them wondering why their parents had lied to them when they told them they were being taken to an inflatable fun session. The lifeguard was walking round the pool like a zombie, this isn't a criticism, I admire him for sticking it out, maybe he was dreaming of a day he might actually be able to save someone, anything to get through his shift. The manager just stood motionless at the side, his jaunty Christmas jumper a stark contradiction to his expression as he stared at the broken tiles on the walls looking like his wife had just left him. By the state of the changing rooms I think Nye Bevan built them with his own hands, just before he pushed the National Health Service Act through parliament, in 1946. Although the lockers did have capacity to be locked, this was by padlock, I had packed a pound coin, stupidly expecting them to use the same system in every other swimming pool I have ever visited. Presumably fitting this kind of system was deemed a pointless endeavour as it was assumed anyone using this pool could not possibly own anything worth stealing - I have to concede on this point that they were correct, I don't, so it's 2 stars from me.

Fantastic experience: Welcoming reception staff, very friendly. Everywhere exceptionally clean and tidy. Pool water good temperature, and really clear with no hairs or plasters! Unusual to find a pool with diving boards nowadays, but this pool is also worth a visit because its deep end is 3.4 metres. Pool tiles are all non-slip, so I did not need my usual flip-flops. I went at lunch time, only 2-3 others in the pool. £4.75 for my entry.

Positive experience: Went for the first time on Monday, the staff Anne & Sharon were lovely. Showed me around all the facilities, they were excellent. Then went for a swim…. The place has seen better days, the tiles are filthy in the pool but I got 35 lengths swim with no trouble went to Park pool today (Friday) much the same. West Lancs, get a new cleaning team!!!!!!!

Fantastic experience: Rejoined this week. Went about 6pm, nice friendly staff, not too busy, loads of choice of machines both cardio, resistance and free weights. £15.99 per month, for full membership, can't ask for better.

Fantastic experience: I would like to praise the young man at the main desk today. Thursday 8th February. I went in to ask if they had any swimming goggles for my 7 year old granddaughter who had announced 2 minutes before she had to go to school that they were broken. Unfortunately they didn't have her size. I explained my predicament and he asked if I had the goggles with me, I did. He then took several minutes and hey presto one pair of fixed goggles. I was so grateful. This young man went above and beyond. He could have said no sorry we don't have her size. He didn't, he offered to help. I never got his name but he was the only male at the reception desk. Thank you so much from a very grateful Grandma and Granddaughter.

Negative experience: In need of a refurb

Negative experience: Not impressed by lifeguards language when young children are around

Positive experience: Probably the last of the old school swimming pools left in the country. Depths range from .9m to 3.6m and there are 2 diving boards in the main pool. A little dated and in need of some love, but both pools were clean, with the little kids pool being noticable warmer, which was a nice touch. Plenty parking in the area, but be aware that the Concourse shuts around 18:00 and that includes the multi-storey car park.

Fantastic experience: Love this gym, the staff are always so friendly and willing to help! I went in the gym a month ago wanting to sign up but not knowing how and I asked a women at the front desk and she did it all for me!! She took my bank card details, address, phone number etc and I wasn't worried at all about sharing the information with her! All the staff members are welcoming and always have a smile on there face! The gym is quite quiet most of the time, you will see the odd staff member walking around the gym just checking everyone is okay! I hope the council taking over the building won't effect any of the workers as it would be a real shame if they weren't there! Can't thank the staff enough

Positive experience: Good gym and pools, good value for money, brilliant and friendly staff who are happy to help and guide, Nye Bevan is adequate and clean, but old decor looks past its best. Place is looking a little tired in places and a pity the council hasn't invested more over the years and should, as a lot of people use the facilities and its a valuable asset to the community at an affordable price.

Positive experience: Clean and go to place to take my grandson swimming .. pool was a little cold hence only 4 starts ...(been plenty of times before no issue ) but given current energy prices I understand then turning the temperature down a bit ..

Negative experience: Miffed off over weekend timetable! Says 8till 4 ! Stood outside at 8 with no sign of anyone. Knocked on entrance Guy turns up and informed me they don’t open till 8:45 and it’s been like that since lockdown!! Two and a half years out of date with their website.

Negative experience: Filthy, terrible drain smell, ants on the poolside. Often 3 staff sat on reception when 2 of them could be cleaning.

Fantastic experience: Bit dated and scruffy but that doesn't bother me. Warm water in pool. Friendly gym. Easy free parking.

Positive experience: Dated swimming pool and gym. Not the cleanest place but the only place in skem open to the public. Council are.looking into building a new updated pool and gym in the near future.

Negative experience: Stopped coming the changing rooms are disgusting and the are no facilities that are worth the money they are charging.... Yet again another place I have to go out of this town for!!

Negative experience: Pools are great but rest of the facilities really let it down. Hardly no working lockers, no family changing rooms and the showers wouldn't work properly. Needs some money spending on it to bring it up to date.

Positive experience: My god it hasn't had any money spent on it in years , used to come here with my dad over 30 years ago and unfortunately its fallen into a state of disrepair. 90%of the lockers don't work , doors missing of stalls, missing ceiling tiles dirty ect , disappointing because the staff are really nice and helpful just needs a bit of money spending on it to refurbish , I thought our council tax paid for projects like this.

Fantastic experience: Always brings back happy memories of going there as a young child. I still even enjoy going now. But the water in the big pool is a tiny little bit too cold at first. But apart from that at the end of the day it does exactly what it's meant to do. Absolutely love going to the nearest chippy for chips & curry afterwards

Negative experience: Not to the standard it used to be, dirty pool, dirty changing rooms, very few available lockers , online timetables incorrect so the full pool facilities were not available when we went. Diving boards not allowed to be used. Very disappointed, but so few alternative places to swim.

Negative experience: Place is run down. While the pools are OK the changing rooms, lockers, showers and toilets are in a bad condition. Most locker keys no longer have straps so they're easy to loose or forget which was your locker, that's if you can find one that works. The showers don't have any pressure, you have to hold the button with your bum for the water to keep flowing.

Positive experience: Bit out dated, staff are friendly, it does what it's meant to, let ya swim! Swimming instructor Graham is excellent.

Showers not great but overall a good swimming experience. Both the Pool and Gym very busy and popular so people must have a good experience or wouldn't keep coming back.

Positive experience: My son learns to swim here & the teachers are fantastic but the changing rooms are a show. They stink! Based on the swimming lessons, 5 out of 5 but the place should have been completely refurbished a while ago.

Negative experience: This place is run for west lancs council by a third party. Positives Absolutely nothing comes to mind. Negatives Grotty Ill maintained Dirty Half the pool is often unavailable due to swimming lessons There have been tiles off the walls in the changing rooms for 12 months plus. Mould growing on the urinals. Some sort of brown smear on the cubicle walls for weeks suggesting it was rarely cleaned. Pool is always freezing Shower area stinks. No water pressure in showers Showers lukewarm on a good day Roof tiles missing above the pool and others look like they are clinging on for dear life. Clearly no money or interest being put into providing proper community facilities. We've been promised a new pool for years and it is badly needed given the state of this abomination. Give this place a miss at all costs.

Positive experience: Really friendly staff and cheap to just go in for a single swim. Cubicles are a tight squeeze and it would have been good to have somewhere to hang my towel poolside but otherwise it had everything you need from a public pool.

Negative experience: This place is a joke. Not only it's outdated and floor in gym is not in level what could cause injuries, swimming pool time table is never correct looks like they make it up how ever they want. You never know if it will be available when you go.

Negative experience: I would give it 0 stars if I could,dirty rundown place,I take my kids to Wigan swimming baths that is clean,warm and staff really friendly,the kids love it there so it's well worth the few pound bus fair

Negative experience: Got my new £115 trainer's stolen from the locker and there obviously not insured because after a few months all I was offered was a month's free pass so that's only £20...I wouldn't go there ever again since my stuff is not safe in a locker I paid for.
