Our comment from FitFit UK about Energise Leisure Centre:
Welcome to Energise Leisure Centre in York, a community hub offering a range of facilities and activities for all ages. Many users praise the center for its friendly and helpful staff, highlighting exceptional service from individuals such as Anne.
Facilities include:
- A decent-sized gym equipped for various fitness levels
- Multiple swimming pools, including a family-friendly area
- A climbing wall and courts for badminton
- A variety of exercise classes catering to different interests
While the center offers great value for its facilities, users have noted some areas for improvement. Several reviews express concerns about the cold water temperature in the pools, including both the main swimming pool and the children's area. Cleanliness has also been mentioned, with calls for better maintenance in changing rooms and pool areas.
Despite these issues, many families have had enjoyable experiences, particularly appreciating the welcoming atmosphere, ample parking, and a strong selection of classes. Overall, Energise Leisure Centre remains a popular choice for local fitness enthusiasts and families looking for recreational activities.

Energise Leisure Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: Firstly, the water temperature in the pool is extremely cold, making it uncomfortable for swimmers. Despite the cold weather outside, it is essential for the pool to maintain an adequate and comfortable temperature for users. I kindly request that the temperature be adjusted to a more comfortable level. Additionally, I noticed that the room temperature surrounding the pool area is also uncomfortably low, further contributing to the discomfort when exiting the water. Finally, the overall cleanliness of the pool area has been concerning. I observed several areas of dirt and debris around the pool, as well as in the changing rooms. A clean environment is crucial for both safety and comfort, and I urge you to ensure that regular cleaning protocols are enforced
Fantastic experience: Facilities were nice, but wanted to give a shoutout to one of your staff (Anne) that served us last evening. We arrived at a very busy time and she was dealing with everyone in a quick and professional manner cutting through the queues quickly.
Fantastic experience: My family loves energise, staff are friendly and available to help
Negative experience: Went to go try the gym before signing up, no staff on sight at core hours and was told I had to have an induction before going into the gym. I've been going to the gym since I was 16 and I'm a boxer. The receptionist was very unhelpful and awkward.
Positive experience: Plenty of classes to enjoy. Not the biggest gym, but enough to keep you going. The pool is popular and there is a kids pool.
Negative experience: Swimming pool is absolutely freeeeeeeezing!!!! I took my two eldest children yesterday for the first time. For an indoor pool the water temperature is absolutely baltic!!! I wasn't told that I couldn't use my "Better" token for the lockers like the other "Better" centres. After changing into our swim suits we realised our locker wouldn't work, I spent 5 mins trying many different lockers to then be told by a member of staff I have to go back outside and buy a locker token from the machine for 25p. I was half naked and only had my card. Thankfully she took pitty on me bless her and went and got me a token herself. This was very kind but it's not good that the receptionist didn't tell us when we arrived and told them it was our first time. They didn't even direct us as to where we needed to go, to get to the swimming changing area. Energise is the closest centre to my house so I was wanting to join as a member for gym and swimming. Thanks God I visited yesterday before joining. Safe to say I won't be returning. Sadly the gym is really small the swimming changing area is not ideal and many areas taped off due to "out if order", lockers issue and the water being that cold I've woken up the next day feeling poorly! We didn't even stay the fully 60 mins because it was unbearable and couldn't stop shivering in the water. Sorry guys. I just couldn't give a better review! Not worth the money at all!
Fantastic experience: Really nice staff and great facilities.
Positive experience: It was a very nice place before they made the big pool too freezing (Elliot aged 9)
Negative experience: Just seen a staff member place his bare feet on the lat pulldown seat and not wipe it down my friend took the time out of his session to clean it
Negative experience: Just seen a staff member place his bare feet on the lat pulldown bench and not clean it,pathetic behaviour
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and value for money. Ideal location.
Fantastic experience: There are a good range of exercise classes available and the swimming pool is a good size. The staff are friendly and very helpful.
Fantastic experience: Decent leisure centre for swimming, gym or climbing.
Negative experience: As a junior you have to use 5 kg and below on all cable machines and have to more than 15 reps and have to 15 reps on machines wich are the cheapest on the market also they use tape to repair machines instead of actually fixing them shocking will be canceling membership soon
Fantastic experience: Hood pla e and Ann at the front desk was very helpful!
Fantastic experience: Joined as part of the healthwise initiative to help with my liver. I was made to feel very welcome and encouraged by Kelly at my initial consultation. My induction was performed by Matt, who has been absolutely awesome throughout my entire gym journey. He often seeks me out when I'm in the gym to say hi, check on my progress, and generally give me some words of encouragement or some suggestions of exercises to do. He's super knowledgeable and quite the motivator! You have to pick the right time to head to the gym as it can be quite popular, but there's always something free to be working on. Overall, the equipment selection is pretty varied and super high quality, and the vibe in the gym is great!
Fantastic experience: Great place.
Positive experience: Great swimming pool with family changing rooms. Lockers need a 20p coin . Clean and close to Acomb.
Fantastic experience: Just started using the gym. Excellent selection of machines. Very clean. Always a helpful member of staff in the room. Water tap just outside the room to fill your bottle. Showers are kinda smelly but I go home to wash anyway so not a big deal.
Positive experience: Lovely pool to take the kids swimming at - changing rooms are nice and clean. Staff are all really nice. Plenty of parking. The hydro pool is brilliant for swimming lessons. The gym is good and has a nice range of equipment - doesn't ever seem to be overly busy. The only reason I've took off a star is because the lockers require 20p to use - and you don't get it back! Not ideal in a cashless society.
Fantastic experience: Great range of classes and activities
Fantastic experience: My grandson goes to kixx football on a Thursday night
Negative experience: Timetable is getting more and more limited as prices increases. There's damage and repairs such as a hole in the swimming pool ceiling that was there before Covid. It's such a shame as when this was first built it was a brilliant facility with a wide variety of activities with times to suit those who work full-time. Now it's just a gym with a limited availability pool and the odd fitness class. They used to offer zumba, aerobics, step aerobics, netball etc but all of this has gone. The only dance based class is Bokwa which is repetitive, boring and the attendees are very cliquey - heaven forbid if you stand in a spot someone else had the previous week on your first (and only) time going! Also calls itself a cashless site when there are things like lockers that take.....cash. Loads of great instructors lost following the pandemic. Understand they're not getting enough funding and the energy crisis is hitting them hard. I worry for the community and the people still employed there that work really hard that this will close down if something isn't done soon. A real shame it's a shadow of its former self. :-(
Fantastic experience: Great facilities for swimming or gym. Gym has equipment for all levels of fitness and the classes offer a good variety.
Fantastic experience: I swim for fitness twice a week and really enjoy it a good 50 minutes in the water
Fantastic experience: Brilliant community leisure centre. Well equipped and clean.
Negative experience: Absolutely shocking. We decided not to book as we planned to go somewhere else but they were full. We came here instead and they had spaces open, my grandma payed and used her membership. I don’t have a membership but they needed to put me on the system even though if we booked online I wouldn’t of been on their system they requested my name and my email address which was unnecessary as she could of quite easily charged us an extra £3.50 but no they needed to sign me up as a member on their system. We were stood there for 20 minutes been Nagged. Would not go here again and would not recommend
Positive experience: Great facilities here.
Negative experience: Do not start any sort of direct debit with these guys because if you do it is nigh impossible to cancel it, and if you do don't bother asking for a refund as they will send you a form to fill out online that doesn't work, when you try to click next it deselects the last tick box on the form and dose nothing.
Positive experience: A good quality gym and pool
Negative experience: Literally wasted three nights after work attempting to go climbing, the first time I spent 45 minutes on the phone waiting to get through but to no avail, so I drove 40 mins across town to be told my account has been wiped after they updated the systems and I can’t climb without been signed off. Was told to come before 6 when an instructor is here. So went two days later and was told no one was there again. Tried again last night after ringing up again to no answer and leaving work early at 4 to see the instructor to be told come back after 7.30!!! Literally so unapologetic, and unhelpful the younger staff were really nice all three times but one older guy made me feel very unwelcome. It was a very much “not my problem mate” kind of experience. I’ve been offered no reimbursement for spending 6 hours on the phone and travelling to and from to just leave feeling annoyed and frustrated. Always loved this gym, really not happy with my experience. I never ever leave reviews but I got so annoyed I felt like I had to, I’ve never known a climbing wall where you can’t get signed off for Belaying!
Negative experience: Look at the comments on Facebook. Months of complaints and non-payment of refunds, no responses, suggestions that only AI exists and no fixing of anything or meaningful apologies. Getting through and asking questions is impossible online. There is no way to speak to a person. I have tried for days and even when you get through to a potential human, you are thanked for your understanding and cut off. The website is fussy and navigation can be trial and error, just like the phone system. I find this inexplicable in this age of fabulous technology. This is a shame as this sorry website and booking system is a customer's first connection often with a centre and if not first, certainly a poor source of information and contact. The two stars are for the friendliness of staff once you've sweated on the internet / phone and made it to your booked activity.
Negative experience: I took my 10 and 8 year old niece and nephew swimming for the first time since lockdown yesterday. Booking was easy, we received a warm and friendly welcome on arrival. We started in the small pool as my nephew was a bit anxious after not swimming for nearly 2 years but he soon gained his confidence back and we then moved to the main pool. It was absolutely freezing. I used to swim here a lot and have always found it on the cold side but yesterday it was really cold. We swam and played for a good 40 mins, mainly in the deep end as they wanted to practice diving. After all of that time we were then approached by a lifeguard who asked if they could swim! I said they could and she obviously didn't believe me even though they had been diving in and swimming in the deep end for ages. She then asked if she could do a swim test on them and made them both swim a length which they both did. If there were any concerns about their ability, why were we allowed to be in the deep end for so long? It was very confusing. We then went back to the little pool to try to warm up to then be told that we couldn't swap between pools due to numbers even though we had started in the little pool then moved without a problem. It seemed that there was a lack of consistency between the lifeguards and the rules which doesn't instill confidence. Sadly, I won't be returning due to the temperature of the water which was pretty unbearable for me.
Positive experience: Dirty pool and nice staff
Fantastic experience: Clean and friendly.
Negative experience: During Covid, when most gyms were doing their best to keep lines of communication with their clients open, this gym shut down their phone line. Now when you call, you must listen to three minutes of blurb before you get to a message stating your call won't be connected to a person and to check the website. Lockers cant be used unless you have a 20p piece handy (which is kept). A local newsagent laughed when I request a 20p piece in my change as so many people stop at his shop on the way to the gym to do this. Please make things more convenient for your users.
Fantastic experience: Easy to book online in advance, very quiet due to the social distance measures currently in place. Don't forget your (non returnable) 20p coin for the locker. Large gym and two swimming pools one for small children.
Fantastic experience: Since acomb energise has reopened since lock down and covid have been twice with my 9 yr old son . Both times I can't fault how u are coping and measures in place reguards covid . The staff are very polite and friendly . The swimming area and changing rooms are spot less and I see staff/lifeguard constantly cleaning! Every area is clean . Toliets spotless . The numbers of people in the pool is set to the same amount and no more. Plenty of space .I feel very safe and do not worry I'm being put at risk using your services . Swimming means alot to my son and its the only thing we've wished for during lockdown and both times been have made us so happy . Thanku to all staff and management should be proud of there staff at York acomb energise . Many thanks Mrs katie Thompson
Hi Katie, thanks for your lovely comments. We will make sure these are passed onto all the staff.
Positive experience: IS GOOD GYM BUT IF THEY ADD MORE TIME IT WOULD BE MORE BETTER. THEY SHOULD FINISH 10PM NOT 8PM. IF THEY CHANGE THERE TIME I WOULD DEFINITELY JOIN BACK
Hi, our current opening hours are part of our phased approach to reopening, We don't have a date yet but we will at some point go back to closing at 10pm
Negative experience: Pool is too small and having paid £16 for me and my 3 kids to get into aquasplash , I was asked for a further £1.20 for a locker, and the session only lasted 55 mins. Yearsley is a far better pool and far better value for money.
Fantastic experience: Been training hard 2day in gym Lucas the elephant was in hopefully 1 day I will have arms like I'm those swans are sick
Fantastic experience: An absolute pleasure 2 train here today lucas the elephant was there such a luvly lad what a pleasant chap great place
Positive experience: A very cold experience. My first time swimming with my 2 year old grandson and the baby pool was so cold. Not a pleasant visit.
Negative experience: Not great but no option this side of york Cons Loads of school kids everywhere Gym is crammed in and a bit dirty Some of the staff are pretty rude The pool area is pretty dated and dirty Wifi doesn’t work well App for booking classes is rubbish Swipe card access why not just code Expensive Charge you for missing classes Pros Local convenient Nice gym staff Classes are good if you can get on them
Fantastic experience: Brilliant facilities accommodating special needs
Fantastic experience: good open hours, activity choice, equipment,.....
Negative experience: Claims to have a fully licensed café. Yet every Sunday when I have been so far it seems to be closed. Any type of gym or leisure facilities not offering refreshments is sub standard in my opinion. There are not even any vending machines to be able to refresh or quench your thirst.
Fantastic experience: Great Gym with high quality equipment and never feels crowded Sufficient on site parking. Helpful staff and good range of opening times
Fantastic experience: I really enjoy coming to Energise, as a member I use the gym and the pool. Never had a problem with either. The small pool is great when I have my children with me. It can be a bit frustrating when it's full but I'm not sure what can be done about this other than the waitlist which they already have in place. The changing facilities are good, and the showers work well too. I enjoy being a member and it costs a lot less than the local health clubs.
Fantastic experience: Lots to do!
Positive experience: Good facilities, clean changing rooms and warm showers. Could do with extra staff on aqua splash days as gets very busy and cleanliness suffers in changing areas for a short time. Small pool gave us blisters due to some debris on floor of pool - either broken tiles or other sharp bits - needs checking and removing as this is the kids priority pool. Friendly staff in general at reception, cafe and poolside. Will use again.
Negative experience: The staff were plain rude and patronising, tried to make us pay for swimming despite us having a swim membership with better gyms? Changing rooms and toilets were dirty and the pool itself was busy and small. I live in York centre and thought the cycle out would be a nice change from yearsly. Worst decision I ever made, I will not be going back there again .
Negative experience: Came to do some bouldering. Was told at the reception the climbing wall is not accessible because it has been booked for a party. So I asked them where I can see the climbing wall schedule so that I know when not to come in. They told me there isn't one and I can just call in the mornig to check whether it is available. Every single time I want to use it. In short, poorly managed, unhelpful and does not care about you or your time. There are much better places to do climbing in York. Avoid.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff
Positive experience: Overall a great gym with well taught classes with very approachable staff and priced well
Fantastic experience: Great range of activities and great facilities. We love the family changing rooms for the pool, the big sports hall and the smart equipment in the gym. The staff are fantastic - always ready to help and really approachable.
Negative experience: Me and my friend are on an Outdoor Adventure Sport course, and our college has a bouldering wall which we have weeks of experience in, plus I have been going to a local climbing wall for over a year. We both know the belay system as this is covered on our course. In order to use the Energise climbing wall unsupervised we would both have to pay £60 (!!!) and do a course over the space of 4 weekends!! Utterly stupid! Learning etiquette, the belay system, and health and safety (which is just absolute common sense) does not take 4 weekend sessions and definitely shouldn't cost that much. Ridiculous.
Negative experience: I went with my friends and the staff are ignorant, they made my friend get out the pool when she could swim perfectly fine. The pool is absolutely freezing compared to the small pool.
Negative experience: Me and my friend were about to head into the gym, the staff sed that we not allowed in when we have already had our induction for the gym
Negative experience: Way too expensive Gym membership, especially if you don't want to swim
Positive experience: Pool closed by 9am this morning evidently staffing issues not good enough, the small pool could of been left open till the two life gaurdes finished there shift.
Positive experience: Good pool and climbing wall. Can be busy but never a problem
Fantastic experience: Aquafit was fun as well as energetic
Fantastic experience: Kids swimming, tennis amd badminton.....great place and so local
Thanks Michael
Positive experience: Friendly and efficent staff. Place clean and tidy.
Thanks Teresa
Fantastic experience: Good staff, decent pool and not hard to find your way round
Thanks Darren
Fantastic experience: Energies is one of the best York pools. I go to lessons there and they have helped me be a confident swimmer. I would certainly recommend energies to anyone to learn to swim or to just play on the floats and boats.
Thanks Emily
Positive experience: Good pool and gym. All the staff are friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: Excellent swimming teachers for children.
Fantastic experience: Great nights climbing!
Positive experience: Relaxing. friendly.welcoming.nice staff.
Positive experience: I've only been to the climbing wall here and it's pretty good for it just being in a leisure centre. There are about 20 lines to choose from- not a massive amount so you couldn't really go every week, but enough to go off every fortnight or so. There's one auto-belay and a bit of bouldering, although I didn't like the bouldering here much. It's about £6.50-£7.50 a go. And Thursday's 6-8pm they do a buddy session so if you need a climb partner for the evening you can find one there
Negative experience: All equipment is filthy. Changing rooms and showers disgusting. You should expect more for £33 a month.
Fantastic experience: I really like ir
Fantastic experience: My son have a lovely time x
Positive experience: Lovely staff. Decent facilities. Good value. Dirty toilets seemingly every Sunday morning and dirty car park almost always
Fantastic experience: Really clean and swimming pool is great especially on fun days for kids in the pool they is two pools one kidd and one adults
Thanks for the review Joanne!
Negative experience: I was charged £1 extra for not having my York card with me despite having spent a fortune over the last year at the Gym on there various activities. #wouldnthappenintheprivatesector #yorkmafiacouncil
Hi Mike. Many thanks for your comment. All residents of York are entitled to a YorkCard which allows up to 20% on certain entry prices in York leisure venues. To get a YorkCard which also gives you many other discounts and free entry in to venues across the city, please visit your local library or follow this link. https://www.exploreyork.org.uk/ Kind regards Energise
Positive experience: Has a lot of facilities including gym, swimming pool, climbing wall, as well as courts for badminton. Lots of different family related events. Attended the roller skating which was excellent, but very very busy. Overall, a lot of things to do here.
Positive experience: good gym but could be better
Negative experience: Okay facilities... But not at all satisfied with the Gym especially. Very small and most of their gear is old. Most of the gym is machines, and they are really missing a cross fit area. I wouldn't recommend energies without the student discount! Only the sport activities seem good...
Fantastic experience: I think that Energise is great. It's very good value for what it is at the end of the day a council facility. I don't understand some of the negative reviews here as I think there is people forgetting that it is a council facility. You could go an break the bank and use David Lloyd or something but probably not hugely better and certainly not much better in sliding scale terms of cost.
Negative experience: Myself and a friend went to the family skate session today and I whilst I'm quite happy with the price and the quality of the hall, the session itself was quite dangerous. I feel this is down to the lack of marshaling by the staff at Energise. A direction of skating wasn't reinforced so we had a lot of smaller kids (and parents!) kamikazeeing into other skaters whilst the girl that was supposed to be on watch sat in the store cupboard on her phone for the hour. I'd much rather go to the other rollerdisco in York on a Friday (Rockin' Roller Disco) where I know it's going to be supervised properly, where there's a fun and relaxed atmosphere and some games for the kids. Wouldn't go back to Energise, that's for sure!
Fantastic experience: As a community pool it's poor, I've been unable to get my non swimming child in the little pool around one visit in three averaged over a year, although I can take her in the big pool to wait, but she's out of her depth. This was supposed to replace the old Eddy Wilson pool, but it doesn't, the gym may be ok, the building's clean and tidy, the staff pleasant, but if you go for an open swim as per their timetable intending to use the small pool, you may find your visit a waste of time. To come back to this post I'd have to say the accessibility of the little pool improved no end with more open swims being introduced, so changed my rating from 2 stars to 5 stars
Positive experience: The children's pool is just too small & the viewing area is smaller. That is the only flaw to me. The gym is great, got a range of equipment, staff are friendly & always happy to help. Wide range of clubs & other sports
Fantastic experience: Friendly atmosphere, decent climbing wall.
