Positive experience: firstly, membership is £155 per month. I only used the pool,sauna, hot tub and steam room (so I've no idea what the gym,cafe,classes are like). Pool etc generally ok. The main issue is five days a week the pool is closed for an hour around 10am-1pm (times change) when it's taken over by an old lady swim exercise class. So the car park is rammed, and as this class is very noisy the sauna, steam and hot tub are just too noisy to relax in while the class is on. It's a shame they don't allow a 'pool/spa' only membership for £70 a month, as £155 is a lot unless you use all the facilities there.
Positive experience: Great club. Would love this gym to be on hussle
Positive experience: I am a founder member and joined in 1995 when the swimming pool was a quarry. Used to enjoy Founder member merchandise which disappeared ages ago so I feel like any other Joe until I tell people. I be therefore invested a lot in the lab over the years and clearly rate it highly as I’ve never left and don’t intend to.
Fantastic experience: Learnt to swim here and enjoyed the Sunday Splash when I was younger! Now make full use of the luxurious facilities, from intense workouts in the gym, to relaxation down in the spa area. Great health club
Fantastic experience: Ryan has transformed my life. I started training with him after a long period of illness when I felt anxious about giving myself an injury. Ryan has built up my confidence and encouraged me to stretch myself. I feel much fitter and healthier for his care and really enjoy the training sessions.
Fantastic experience: I've been going to the Lab Spa for almost a year and really enjoy the facilities. The classes are very enjoyable, my favourite being Body Pump where the instructors work extremely hard to get the class in high spirits. The Lab also has an impressive line up of personal trainers who specialise in different types of training. My PT (Roxani) is trained in TRX, Kettlebells, and curates a brilliant schedule for me to follow regularly. I always feel incredibly refreshed after her sessions and she puts in the effort to build a workout that I will enjoy. Roxani has also spent a lot of time assessing my requirements, changing the workout regimes based on my body needs. This is a sign of a committed trainer and I am incredibly grateful for her commitment. I would highly recommend her! She is absolutely brilliant.
Fantastic experience: My experience at The Laboratory has been nothing short of fantastic. The classes are energizing and motivational, with plenty of options for modifications, and the entire staff is warm, encouraging, and genuinely invested in your progress. About a month ago, I began working one-on-one with Roxani, and I can’t say enough good things about it. She’s incredibly attentive to my form, often noticing details I wouldn’t have thought of, and she truly listens to my body—even better than I do! I've seen significant improvements in my strength, but what stands out most is how comfortable I feel with her. That ease has made a huge difference, especially since I was initially nervous about working with a new trainer. I’d recommend Roxani to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, supportive, and attentive trainer!
Fantastic experience: Overall happy with it, rejoined after a 17 year gap. The gym is good, friendly staff, excellent PT Roxani who understands fitness for my age group ( 60 yo) Classes generally been good lovely Zumba ( Claire) excellent Pilates ( Alison) wonderful yoga ( Lisa). Cons certain classes are very oversubscribed and hard to get into. I have fed back to reception and one of the managers about the studio ( yoga one) windows being dirty a few times and nothing has been done. Air con seems hit and miss in that room also same for gym. But overall it’s giving me what I wanted from joining.
Fantastic experience: I joined the Laboratory club in Muswell Hill one year ago and have really enjoyed it. It is a wonderful sanctuary with a gym, swimming pool and a fantastic cafe overlooking the beautiful grounds. It is a very special place with friendly staff. I unfortunately became ill in May with a life threatening illness - I decided I needed a trainer to rebuild my strength. The personal trainer Roxani has been wonderful, guiding me through strength exercises in a fun and supportive way. I couldn’t ask for more dedication and support. I highly recommend this club.
Negative experience: Extremely rude, unhelpful receptionist (redish curly hair), definitely not the welcome I was expecting from a so called "luxury health spa"! My husband mixed up some passes, she was extremely rude and dismissive, I still can't believe I was welcomed with such attitude as a potential new member! Absolute disgrace!

Negative experience: If youre trying to book a treatment don’t believe a word the reception says. They will tell you a pack of lies in order to keep you quiet .

Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member here for nearly 3 years, and my whole family also come here (founder members). I bring friends on guest passes here, and they also really enjoy the space here. The new refurbished gym floor, juice bar/cafe and outside area are very sleek & accomodating. Lovely staff and managing team! I feel welcome here and it’s a very relaxing place to go to after work. For the price of membership, it would be great to have towels offered, new gym machines, or even free sanitary products in female toilets. Little things go a long way :)
Fantastic experience: Unreal spa facilities always clean, staff are always nice and professional. Gym is always well air conditioned and it’s never too busy. Good range of gym equipment. Nice juice bar area to relax and chill and do work! Other gyms need to be like this to be honest
Negative experience: If you are a keen swimmer you will know that there are few options for training venues in North London. Unfortunately this company know it and that is basically their business model. In case you are tempted let me save you £150 and point out some of the reasons why it is impossible to train here - the main one being that the people running this place are exceedingly greedy and rent a lot of pool space out to swimming lessons. So you could turn up to swim on a Monday night as I did today and find 1/3 of the already limited Lane space devoted to children’s swimming lessons meaning the rest of the pool is dangerously overcrowded and find yourself unable to swim your planned set. When the pool was closed for two entire weeks due to an issue - I did not see any of my membership fee back and was told to try an exercise class instead. There is no swimming induction - so you will find people completely unaware of basic swimming etiquette making it very difficult to swim uninterrupted intervals longer than 50m. The lifeguards are all very young and have a policy of not intervening if they see e.g old ladies swimming head up breast stroke with their specs on in the fast lane. This happens a lot as the club is in the main frequented by rude and entitled retiree types who treat the space as if it is their home and are annoyed to have to share it. As others have pointed out - the facilities are not cleaned properly and the changing room experience is no better than at any council run pool - sometimes worse in fact. Lastly (and this may seem like a small irritation but it quickly grates) the pool always - and I mean always, absolutely stinks of olbas oil since they allow people to add it to the steam room next to the pool deck and even on the far side of the room you cannot escape the headache inducing smell, which is not ideal if you are a distance swimmer. Unless you are lucky enough to be able to come at 2pm in the afternoon which seems to be the only manageable time to swim - I’d opt for a Better leisure swimming membership instead and save yourself a lot of money and frustration.

Negative experience: I’m only giving this place a 1 star because 0 stars isn’t an available option. Please, if you are seeking out a worthy health club, do not commit to the low standards of the Lab Spa. On several occasions I have had little white worms accompany me on my swim, not to mention the filthy jacuzzis and standard at best changing room facilities. I’ll only warn you guys once, do not drain your pockets of £140 a month to this place!!!!
Negative experience: Called to join and spoke to manager The conversation was going well He highlighted the various packages and said I could sign up and start training the same day Then he said do you mind me asking your age,so I replied that I was 68 years old. His response was wecdont have any membership for your age group Clear case of age discrimination Disgraceful bigoted discriminatory organisation Draw your own conclusions
Negative experience: Don’t believe the hype, it’s a niche place sure but the price of £140 plus per month is nowhere near worth paying. Much of the staff is incompetent and the facilities are basic at best. The glass panels over the swimming pool have broken in the past in addition worms have been found near the swimming pool.
Fantastic experience: I went there for a massage and it was truly top-notch. The atmosphere was calming, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish.
Negative experience: High turnover in staff and only a few of them ever make any sense. The "guards" by the pool are almost always (always) useless. Don't expect any help. This could be a Fusion or Better pool, differences are not that great in terms of helpfulness. Some of the "regular" members are always booked into popular (pilate) classes whether they are there or not, and the rest of us scramble on waiting list. When you joined up, it depends on who you speak to, you might or might not get a good deal (depends if they like your face or discriminate against it). Choose wisely. A few of their staff are the worst type you can get in the service industry - pretentious, made it up as they go along. The bar/cafe staff chit chat loudly but they asked members to be discreet with their phone calls when they are in the bar/cafe. A staff can eat a Tesco sandwich in the bar/cafe but they don't allow members to eat their own food. The guards at the pool would go for break together, leaving the poolside with no members of staff. Not to mention they are still letting people with babies in their nappies into their Sunday Splash. The rule says only potty-trained kids are allowed. The smiley staff at the reception couldn't tell the difference between a 5 months old and a 5 years old. That's the level of intelligence one has to accept if you are a member there. We have witnessed someone complained about the nappies but got yelled at by the on-duty manager. Don't know what happened to that person - who would accept this type of attitude - they are always better than you. Beware!
Negative experience: It took me calling 3 times today to get the so called manager to call me back about prices which should be transparent on the website. He under duress eventually spoke to me, did nothing to promote the club’s benefits & confirmed to me only that I did not want to join. Get a new manager guys … this one is lazy & useless! A good friend of mine is a member … shame on you!
Fantastic experience: Joined this gym at the beginning of February and was very impressed with the polite and helpful front of house service. The gym facilities are top notch, hygienic and the staff on the gym floor went above and beyond to help me get used to the equipment. I love the spa facilities and the lifeguards are super friendly and attentive. Overall a very positive energy in the club and will be recommending to all my friends and family. 5 stars all day long!
Negative experience: The duty manager put me on a "young professionals" membership when I signed up. This was a cheaper membership, but unbeknown to me, this meant I could only use the gym off peak, which was not a conversation we had. I subsequently only found out about these restrictions when my card wouldn't let me in and the front desk lady got annoyed at me about why I was trying to get into the gym before 1pm which was obviously embarrassing because I didn't know about the restrictions initially. When I questioned him on why my card was not letting me in. He lied to me and said he would leave a note on my file so I could still get in. This never happened as every time I'd attend before 1pm, I would be interrogated by the front desk about why I was trying to get in. It was only when the receptionist told me that I realised the membership i had been put on and the time restrictions that applied to it. When I emailed him about this, he dismissed me completely and continued to lie and said, "Just mention to reception that you are Young Professional and they will let you in." This manager has all the hallmarks of a snake oil salesman, and seeing some of the other reviews on here, im not the only one who thinks that. He was not truthful about the membership he was signing me up to, and thankfully, I'm no longer a member. Not to mention the outdated equipment and personal trainers who were there just for a social or to take up all the machines themselves. I wouldn't want to be a member even if it was only £30 a month, never mind £100 plus.
Negative experience: The worst front of house staff I have ever experienced . Rude , obnoxious, arrogant. I think management need to seriously re train their staff as this is turning members away . Totally unacceptable .
Negative experience: I left despite living around the corner because it is just not worth the £150 a month. PTs (which are £50 a session ON TOP) are not committed and I got strung along by one for a month or so, facilities are old and not cleaned enough, some classes are good but they were always full days in advance, staff isn’t trained in hospitality (both front room and cafe). For the price (8-10x vs other local gyms), one would expect a much higher level of attention and experience.
Fantastic experience: Great Staff, Gym and Spa. I have lived in North London for over 20 years and this is definitely the best spa/gym I’ve encountered.
Negative experience: The staff at the lab treat it as their own private health club. Example - one of them saying that he was busy using three pieces of the equipment during a “power session” and then complaining when people hadn’t stacked the weights to his liking. It’s old, hotel standard equipment for £150 a month. Avoid

Negative experience: When I came to a swimming pool today evening, I saw that the team was cleaning the pool. It was a lots of dust and pieces of dirt in the water and it was disgusting to swim. A manager on reception told me that there was no harm for health to swim in the water with pieces of dirt.

Negative experience: compared to …Mill Hill … cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired super disgusting, nothing clean always wet and stinky. and the reception staff never give anything or manage anything, it seems they are only there to open the door

Fantastic experience: I have been a member for over 20 years and still think the Lab in Muswell Hill is a wondrous haven. And quite unique in its atmosphere, friendliness of staff and beauty with one of the best pools in London. Occasionally it gets things wrong but in truth not very often and because it is not part of chain, it can deal with any problem swiftly and senstively. Recommended.

Fantastic experience: What a venue... Everything exudes quality, premium, and attention to detail. All facilities were spotless, especially the steam room, jacuzzi(s) and lockers which are often the elements other clubs neglect. The guests were lovely there too. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Positive experience: Great pool with no chlorine, staff are really friendly. Beautiful location. It’s a real shame about the cheap toiletries, if only shower gel and shampoo are provided then at least make sure they are nice one. Also the coffee shop feels so dated really need a re vamp. Fantastic experience: How lovely to be back at the Lab! I returned in May 2022 after pausing membership during the pandemic and how delightful it is to be back. Fantastic trainers, lovely staff and I have made some amazing friends for life along the way. The pool is gorgeous, as are all the extra facilities like the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi - beautiful. The yoga teachers are truly excellent - to name but a few - Bea, Yana, Lisa - each teacher has a unique approach and you are made to feel so welcome. There are a wide range of pilates teachers too, Anne is amazing! And for hiit, Tracey keeps us on our toes! Angie for Swiss Ball is lovely - we really are spoilt for choice. And I think a special word must go out to the brilliant team on reception - so smiley kind and helpful - well done Muswell Hill Lab for continuing to be the best fitness and social club! Oh, did I mention the grounds and the cafe? Yep, just all round fabulous!

Negative experience: Really disappointed with the customer service at the lab, I was speaking to a member of staff (apparently the manager), about booking a massage after receiving a gift voucher for Christmas, I explained that I use to be a member- in fact we had a family membership (for three of us), and that I would like to pay to use the sauna- I was met with this really rude tone, quite dismissive- she said 'well you can pay £120 on top of your massage to use the sauna', really don't feel particularly good about spending money or time there, I even explained that I was considering joining again. Shame to see a once good business lose it's touch.
Hi Alexander, thank you for your feedback. Whilst the message itself is correct in that as a private members club (as was the case when you were a member), only members of the club or those visiting on a Spa Day are able to use the Sauna, It seems from your description that the way this was explained to you seems to have lacked the customer service level we would expect from our team. Im sorry that this was the case and I hope that you consider returning to the club at some point in the future, whether that be as a Spa guest or indeed as a member.
Positive experience: I mainly use the pool, which is great, and if you pick the right time not too busy. The facilities are dated and need a refresh, and for the price I find it ridiculous that I have to bring my own towel, or that there are no toiletries (just cheap shower gel). I also think that the class range is disappointing (in fact, it looks like Mill Hill has more variety). I go back and forth about leaving, but stay for the pool…
Positive experience: Different to many gyms in that you actually get a friendly ish welcome when you come through the door. Good and very well maintained shower and changing rooms. Well stocked of all items shower gel, shampoo, hairdryers (many) even straighteners all in good working order. Lockers are relatively new and working! Attentive cleaning operator in the changing rooms friendly chatty and welcoming. Pool, steam and sauna facilities all in good working order and again clean. No cups around the pool area to use apart from that no complaints. Expensive but I think worth it overall. The only downfall I have to add is that my swimming items that I left in a rush at closing time are now lost and not recoverable. When I asked cleaning staff they told me ask reception when I asked reception they were very unhelpful and didn’t want to look on their box upstairs for me.
Negative experience: Just not worth the membership fee.. They charge a premium rate but do not deliver a premium service. No towels provided, cheap toiletries, unclean changing room, somewhat dated overall and unwelcoming reception team. I've provided feedback to management but my email was not even acknowledged. Customer satisfaction does not seem to be a concern.
Negative experience: I've had a terrible customer service experience, with The Laboratory blaming me for a mistake The Laboratory made in taking payment. Nice facilities but not relaxing as such a hassle to deal with membership admin.

Fantastic experience: I really love the experience to visit the club. I was recommended this place by my friend, but her comment is not enough to describe this lovely and perfect spa! I admire the beauty of the private garden and cafe terrace so after exercise, I fully enjoyed this natural space and atmosphere. In particular, the pool, Jacuzzi, and sauna are very clean and tidy, and staffs keep managing the facilities on a rota. (feel so safe) I can't forget the sky during swimming... not used the gym yet but will be there again to do it! Recommend this place with all my heart!!!
Fantastic experience: The Lab is truly a gem, tucked away in a beautiful setting, overlooking trees and a wonderful garden, where you can sit and enjoy delicious food or enjoy a refreshing smoothie. The spa area is wonderfully relaxing and the swimming pool is cleaned by UV rays, which is a big bonus if you dont want to be smelling of chlorine ! There is a real sense of community here at the Lab which you just dont get at other gyms. The staff go out of there way to make you feel like a valued member, especially Luca the Duty Manager who is always helpful and happy and knows the true value of customer service.

Fantastic experience: My friend and I attended a Spa Escape Day for two and it was a luxurious and highly relaxing experience! We had full use of the spa facilities, a light lunch, free coffees and teas, and had booked in a deep tissue massage! The best part was the use of a private relaxation room for the two of us, right next to the pool. It was a beautiful facility to explore and the we got to experience the best jacuzzi and deep tissue massage we've ever had! The sauna and steam room were great for detoxing and the protein shakes were second to none. The facilities were very clean and spacious and the staff were all extremely attentive and a pleasure to talk to. Luca was particularly welcoming in his tour of the building. He made sure we were taken care of and was just as lovely as the spa he runs. Thank you to everyone there for having us yesterday and we can't wait to come back again for another spa day! - Daya Bharj
Negative experience: Fantastic facilities but quite expensive, I stopped going as I wasn’t using it enough, I was recently contacted by their new manager Luca Ferrera (who is the rudest and most unprofessional customer facing worker I’ve met) about rejoining, I was initially really interested but he got really strange about everything. Unhelpful and generally arrogant. Otherwise a great gym!
Fantastic experience: Really, really nice gym with lots of amazing classes. I feel like I am looking after myself every time I attend - really needed after the horrific year of 2020. The jacuzzi and pool is incredible! And it's very pretty and calming with gorgeous views and its modern interior. Literally makes the price of membership so worth it. The reception staff could be friendlier though. For the price of a membership, toiletries like moisturisers and conditioners could be provided, as well as better quality shampoo and conditioner. The showers could be updated too.

Fantastic experience: This gym is very clean and has an excellent Spa to relax in. The swimming pool is massive, there are two Jacuzzis, a steam room, a sauna, and deckchairs to relax on - and the duty managers Luca and Ramune, as well as the life guards are very friendly and helpful. The fact that they use UV-cleaning rather than lots of chlorine is so much better for your skin and you don't smell like chlorine afterwards. I can only recommend it!
Negative experience: Rude receptionist and manager who advised on the membership. Arrogant and stand offish manner of speaking on the phone. Very unwelcoming.
Negative experience: Terrible customer service and incredibly rude staff. Not worth the money at all.
Fantastic experience: Back open again. The new booking app is great as has a live update of number of people in the club. Good hygiene but would like to see more disinfecting in the changing rooms and anti virus door handle coating. I am naturally more cautious than many but so much more can be done.

Negative experience: Meanwhile the third gym (in one week) I can’t join for one day in that country as firefighter on tour. I never had in Europe so many problems to find a nice gym for a workout...

Negative experience: Why there is no membership price information on your website?! Is it some kind of secret? I have spend over 10 minutes reading through that huge text and could find any valuable information... All I can to book a tour or to send my detail, but I don't want that! I want to see the price clear and open. Or it is different for each person?!?
Positive experience: Lab is not value for money. Classes get cancelled sometimes at a minute notice, with no cover. It has happened to me five times over the last four months (aqua class). Management have no contingency plans

Fantastic experience: I had an amazing visit here. My mother-in-law and i had the spa day experiance which included tea in the lounge and lunch in the resturant. Lucas was an excellent duty manager took care of us all day and came to say good bye when he went off shift. I had a sports massage with Roberto who was great very knowledgeable taking time to listen to my needs and gave feedback on my injurys after the massage. I also joined a yoga class which was well lead. The food selection is healthy but super tasty and strives to be different from "rabbit food" that can be such a staple at places like this. I will be going back and i know my mother-in-law is thinking about getting membership after such a wonderful time. The facilities were all clean and in working order. Go see for yourself!

Fantastic experience: Very satisfied for over 20 years! My husband and I are 'founder members' of the Lab and have used the facilities several times a week throughout that time. I'm mostly a swimmer and the pool area is superb, he is more into the gym. The pilates classes I've attended have been excellent and with a single exception on a single occasion, the staff have been unfailingly friendly, professional and enthusiastic. The standard of upkeep and hygiene has not dipped - obviously things do occasionally go out of order but don't take long to fix. I don't go there to socialise but in my opinion there is a pleasant atmosphere.

Fantastic experience: The Lab offers a great mix of classes, gym and spa treatments. The juice bar and the nice garden make it a pleasant place to relax after a good session. Best of all the friendly people working at the Lab go out of their way to make you feel welcome, especially Luca always puts a smile on my face.

Fantastic experience: when you put your members first there is no other place I work for myself. I buy and sell…………. When buying, service is one of my major considerations, together with quality and price. Service is not as accurately measurable as quality and price. In its simplest terms, service means ‘my satisfaction’. The real measure of service can only come through actual experience. I am a current member of both the Laboratory Spa & Health Club (Muswell Hill) and the Marriott Hotel leisure club (Waltham Abbey), so I can make well informed comparisons. As a result I have now given notice to cancel my membership with the latter!!! The staff (too many to name individually) at the Laboratory are fantastic (characterised by the overtly friendly behaviour and their concern) in every area of the club from the warm welcome at the reception throughout all the facilities. The introduction to the gym and all that goes with it, the trainers encouragement to participate in a range of classes, the attention given to me, as a novice within the classes amazed me and finally to the juice bar for that well earnt rehydration (I’m not too sure about the ginger and turmeric shot, but I gave it a go)! By observation I have found the facilities and their maintenance to be exceptional. As for overall value…. Well if the average price of a pint in London is £4.20 ………….it’s a steal …. If the satisfaction of the customer is a factor, then they have the ‘X’ Thanks!
Fantastic experience: Joined a few months ago having trained twice on a day pass previously. Staff are very polite, professional and attentive, both gym and poolside, the clientele and ambience is positively refreshing and it's a glorious piece of luxury in a cruel world. Highly recommended.

Negative experience: I booked spa day for my husband birthday online. I never been there. It absolutely nothing to called spa. Only a normal gym and only one small relaxation room. The room was really cold and noisy because of swimming pool. I paid £110 for Rubbish Rubbish Place.
Fantastic experience: Update: I’ve now been a member for 7 years and all what I said 6 years ago (below) are still true today. A very happy member of The Lab. The Lab is a great gym, spa and health club. I’ve been a member for a year now and always look forward to going there! There is a lovely swimming pool, and the gym floor has leafy views (very pleasing to the eye). The equipments of the gym and their class variety are alright (for my expectations) although I’ve seen gyms that offer even more. I’ve never used their beauty treatments but it’s good to know they have these facilities. The staff are very professional, friendly and welcoming. Their cafe, with an Italian chef, is an extra bonus with great coffee and light food choices. Update: I love the fact it is located on top of a hill in a beautiful garden, but there is no public transport that takes you there. It’s my little sanctuary that makes me feel relaxed as soon as I walk in and feel great every time I leave! Keep up the good work team Laboratory! Thank you.
Positive experience: You pay a lot of money for classes you can not get into as demand is higher than programme provision. In twenty years they still have not responded to this matter and put on more classes . This is especially so in the mind body programme.
Positive experience: Good except for hygiene and admin issues. Stingy values, wierd about membership, no pricing on website, unwelcoming vibe. Someone needs to clean the mold and sludge from the steam room door handle and under the seats. It really is disgusting.
