Our comment from FitFit UK about MyActive Buxton:

MyActive Buxton is a vibrant leisure centre located in the charming town of Buxton. It offers an excellent range of facilities, making it a great choice for families and fitness enthusiasts alike.

Highlights of MyActive Buxton include:

  • Clean and Welcoming Environment: Many users appreciate the cleanliness of the facilities, including the swimming pool and changing areas.
  • Friendly Staff: The staff are frequently mentioned as being helpful and welcoming, ensuring a pleasant experience for visitors.
  • Good Swimming Facilities: There is a large main pool as well as a baby pool that provides a fun environment for children, complete with various floats available.
  • Varied Classes and Activities: The centre offers a range of classes, from swimming to aqua fitness, and users have found the scheduling generally convenient.
  • Great Location: Situated near the iconic Opera House, it provides a lovely setting for a day of exercise and recreation.

However, there are some areas for improvement:

  • Some visitors have noted that certain facilities could use refurbishment to enhance the overall experience.
  • There have been complaints regarding the temperature of the swimming pools, with some stating that the water can be too cold.
  • Issues with booking classes and sessions online have been reported, leading to frustration among users.
  • There are also concerns about the gym being somewhat small and lacking in a wider variety of equipment.

In summary, while MyActive Buxton showcases an inviting atmosphere and friendly service, enhancing cleanliness and addressing temperature issues could significantly improve visitors' experiences.

Fantastic experience: clean and worm water good in winter aswell

Negative experience: Really disappointed with the swimming lessons. I attended a first session with my daughter (oldest group before the proper levelled lessons start), and the instructor stayed on deck. First thing they asked the group to do was dive down, putting face in water, to grab rings at the bottom of the kid pool. Not very beginner friendly at all. The next bits were essentially laps, where the instructor asked the kids to swim from one side to the other pushing a foam block -- they hadn't yet taught them how to swim?? Next the 'stronger swimmers' (ie: two kids who had been there before) were invited over to the big pool to practice jumping in with the instructor, while my daughter and another new child were told to go ahead and play in the meantime. It was an awful experience, and asked to cancel lessons after. Was told to call to cancel, but it has been a real nightmare trying to cancel. You have to call a 3rd party company, where you are on hold for 20 mins+, only to be told you have to give one months notice, and ring back the local gym. I rang back the local gym and was told they couldn't do anything and to email the swim coordinator. REALLY recommend avoiding, as they don't offer 'taster' sessions and cancelling is an absolute nightmare.

Negative experience: Gym was £7.40 for one session (explicitly not day pass) - they had one bench, one squat rack and no space to deadlift. The gym feels very judgemental if you’re not on the cardio machines as people are simply just watching everyone else. 2* as it’s a leisure centre so it’s the half expected

Shaunie “Starman” 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: I really like the gym..which I have now visited twice after working in Buxton. I usually go to New Mills but this gym is bigger and has more machines. Plus it feels nicer because of the windows looking out into the gardens. Don't worry though, no one can peer back in at all us muscular guys and gals working out.

Positive experience: Good sized pool in a lovely location. Also gym facilities. Not very good for lane swimming unless you want to go very early or late evening

Anne curley 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Clean staff friendly swimming pool plus fitness centre, coffee vending machine as snacks

Mary Hartley 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Great swimming pool with hot showers and modern changing area.

Johanna Iserloh 1 year ago

Negative experience: Paid 8.20 for a single use of the gym which is extortionate anyway but the gym looks like it's never been cleaned, disgustingly dirty. Thick with dust and hair, not very hygienic at all

John Farrell 1 year ago

Positive experience: Adequate

Paul Taylor 1 year ago

Negative experience: They don't take cash. Consequently my daughter couldn't swim today.

S W 1 year ago

Positive experience: The kids really enjoyed their swim, wasn't long enough as you only get an hour so by the time they got into the swim it went fast. Shoes were to be taken off before even entering the lockers (which I found odd), the baby/toddler/preschool pool was really warm and was filled with all sorts of floaties for the children to play with, the big pool for swimmers had a massive floating octopus in it which was bombarded by the older kids and more proficient swimmers. I wouldn't go again as we travelled over 45 minutes for a 1hr swim, would probably choose somewhere closer to home.

Sue T 2 years ago

Positive experience: My first time at Aqua Boost which was an interesting experience. Due to buoyancy of the water my leg didn't hurt much. The pool wasn't crowded much to my relief so I didn't feel self conscious.

Fantastic experience: Clean, quiet and lovely little pool for a swim with kids.

Andy Winthrope 2 years ago

Positive experience: Nice pool, clean, good baby pool for little ones with toys etc.

Positive experience: I take my granddaughter every week for swimming lessons, good value lessons, plenty of changing areas. Baby pool which is quite warm. Big pool, split into lanes when I go.

Beverley Oswin 2 years ago

Negative experience: As enjoyed the swimming pool and swim affiliaties I don't like the fact that it's just payment on card and there's is no loose change at all at the reception when you need change for either vendor machine or money for locker .it's not been thought through properly in that respect and not everyone has access to debit cards . And booking all everytime is a nuisance. I personally think before you had all this change was a lot better.

Positive experience: Littel gym not much equipment leaking in machines expensive for what it is

Fantastic experience: After a recent visit this week I have to comment on the general cleanliness of the floor and surrounding area in the swimming changing area. We'll done.

Christine Dawson 2 years ago

Positive experience: A nice pool though I've never used it I take my four grandchildren who are members of Buxton swimming club and also my son swims for the club. The changing which is unisex is clean and well designed with large cubicles and you can watch from a glassed off area which has vending machines, tables and chairs. It lost a star as there is no poolside viewing area.

Deb 2 years ago

Positive experience: Looking online at home it stated there were 56 more spaces for family public swim. Travelled the 30minutes, to be told that the pool was full for today (cue two very disappointed children). I went outside to look online and it said there were 44 more spaces available for that session. I went and told the same lady, to be told there were just x3 more spaces! One, that would've suited us fine, Two, why does the internet not reflect the computer the lady is reading from? We did have a nice swim, but upon counting, there were 28 people in the water....not the 60 to be full as I was told. The changing rooms were fine and warm, the pool was lovely and not busy...so my main gripe is the fact I felt the staff couldn't be bothered and didn't make an effort.

Kim 2 years ago

Negative experience: Nightmare from the start. Unable to book online and no answer to telephone call so called into book which proved to be very frustrating and disorganised, then when we arrived for the class one of the bookings wasn't even on the system. Changing rooms and pool were clean and lifeguards were nice. Instructor was very shouty like a Sargent major. The class wasn't as expected and we will not be returning.

Chloé Kenyon 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: We went here today after one of our residents showed interest. Today we came here with a few of our guys are disabled and have learning disabilities. Unfortunately we were told upon arrival that it was card only. However our guys only had access to cash. Instead of turning us away the lovely manager let us all in for free so that our guys didn’t get upset by the change as this is something that can often cause issues for them. The staff were super friendly and helpful too. Only one pool was open but the kind lifeguards got the second one opened just for our guys. Amazing service throughout. Clean facilities too with lots of space for changing. Safe to say it really made our residents day and we all appreciated it so much. 10/10 will be coming back again if we can sort payments out :)

jo boyd 3 years ago

Negative experience: I used to use the pool regularly for lane swimming. Now I can't because you have to book in advance to get a place. Whenever I consider booking, the slots are always taken. Covid is here to stay and it should be a matter of choice if someone wants to use the pool. What's the point of joining if you can't use the service?

Yvonne West 3 years ago

Negative experience: I was told I had to pay by card so I had to walk back home to get my card. Cards are not a good idea in my opinion because some old people and lots of children do not use cards so the centre is losing customers.

Positive experience: Good pool and facilities can be a bit cold I’m learning to scuba dive their and the staff are always cheerful and helpful can be a bit dirty but I’m there at the end of the day after the public swimming has finished and possibly the cleaners haven’t been yet

Fantastic experience: Great place to swim, excellent smiley staff and just a nice location.

David Bolsover 3 years ago

Positive experience: I've been a member for a few years.. Generally OK facilities but not always as clean as possible. Price of membership OK considering the equipment available. I'd be willing to pay more if the changing rooms were of a better standard.

Fantastic experience: Excellent place reasonable price can't fault it nice wide pool lovely

Garry Beck 3 years ago

Negative experience: Unprofessional staff! The receptionist was very rude and raised her voice at me several times. The pool was cold and the changing rooms had mud all over the floor.

Negative experience: Customer prompted service, but cleaning regime, especially in the pool toilets let's this place down badly!!

Positive experience: Update post covid The fitness area it’s still great, opening times also great. But it’s unfair for full paying members not to be able to use the pool! It’s alway busy and dirty especially at the end of the day. There are two pools, don’t understand why one lane cannot be free for the rest of the members. Parents should also control their kids better not letting them run around and screaming. It’s supposed to be a “leisure” centre not daycare. Also the website and app especially are bad, literally impossible to register my membership to be able to book any classes The fitness areas are very well equipped, staff quite friendly, didn't have the chance to use the pool as it's still closed, but reading other reviews it isn't the best as it's either busy, closed for group sessions or very cold. Don't know about the changing rooms as they're currently closed due the current situation, but personally I prefer to come in the gym equipment and just have a shower at home

Jordan Schofield 5 years ago

Negative experience: Gym too small and not many machines for the price. Better priced gyms that have more equipment to use.

Jamie Holland 5 years ago

Positive experience: Great value swim in nice part of Buxton.

ANN LIGHT 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: A great swimming pool near to the Opera House and I was visiting the area and was able to go to the early morning session for lane swimming (adults) Cost £4 for the swim - lane swimming between 0630 to 1000 3 lanes (fast, medium and slow) Plenty of lockers and you will need a token or an old £1 coin Separate shows cubicles

Christine 5 years ago

Negative experience: Water is always freeeeezing, to the point it turns my children's lips blue!

Oli Somerset 5 years ago

Fantastic experience: Swim lessons are good

Nicki Matthews 5 years ago

Negative experience: Classes are regularly cancelled with little or no notice. Communication within the centre is shocking. The staff are very friendly and very helpful, apart from one very rude and grumpy receptionist. Internet is sporadic.

Joannah 5 years ago

Positive experience: Pool is ok but showers are open to pool, one broken. Have to remove shoes and leave them unattended before entering changing rooms as floors constantly wet, slippery and dirty. Not enough changing rooms or family changing.

Daniel Watson 5 years ago

Negative experience: The small pool is barely warm enough for babies and toddler, and the public is being told that it's a technical issue. Frankly I don't believe this so I've stopped taking my son there because he ended up full of a cold from our last visit. The place is run like an informal prison in terms of swimming times and I think £4 for a strict 45 minutes (even when the pool isn't busy) is more of a reason not to visit this place

M Trainor 5 years ago

Positive experience: Unfortunately at the weekends the 'public' sessions are subject to random closures for private parties. The website is never updated for these. You can try phoning before hand to try and find out if its open - if there's no answer and it goes to the answerphone keep trying, it may just mean no one is picking up. If it is open the main pool is very good.

Negative experience: Visited for the first time while on holiday, unfortunately we wont be back, Main pool is freezing, my toddler could only manage 10 minutes before we had to get out as she was so cold. Life Guards are intimidating and unfriendly. We we told we could not use the baby pool with there being swimming lessons taking place, Although we did not see anyone using the pool while we were there, and it does not state anywhere in the swimming time table about the baby pool being used for swimming lessons on the time we visited. We found the changing rooms were clean and warm, Hence the Two star rating. Spoke to the manager about our experience just before we left..We were told that the cold water is due to recent heating problems, but seems to me that this has been going on for a while after reading some of the reviews. Manager also told us that they have recently employed new life Gaurds, which is why they might of come across as intimidating/ unfriendly....Still whatever the reason, we did not enjoy our time here, seems very disorganized !! Therefore we will try somewhere different to swim with our toddler next time we are visiting the Area..Such a Shane!

Positive experience: Freezing large pool, small pool was closed. Was only in there 20mins and my 4 year wanted to get out was tired from constantly having to keep moving and was shivering he was so cold. Also it states no shoes into the changing rooms but one member of staff was happily walking around the pool area and changing rooms in his!

Fantastic experience: Good swim. Reasonably priced

Adrian Rudd 6 years ago

Positive experience: Small gym and a pool together. To the other people complaining about the pool temperature... higher temperatures need more chlorine to keep the water clean and more energy to heat the water. Try a dip in the duck pond outside; Now that really is cold!!

Fantastic experience: Lovely warm changing area, though the water is rather chilly!

Negative experience: Been visiting this leisure center for years now. Unfortunately it’s gone downhill massively over the last few years. It’s now overpriced and overly strict. I pay £4 for a strictly adhered to 45 minutes. An attendant today actually asked a lady with small children to wait for a petty 3 minutes on the side of the pool because her ‘session’ hadn’t started. There were about 4 people in the pool at the time. I would understand if it was busy but that was just ridiculous. Some of the staff are brilliant, but unfortunately the management aren’t. I wanted to ask a question to a manager on another occasion, and was asked to wait (10 minutes) because she was cashing up. Customer care what?? Don’t bother going here, it needs buying and reinventing by someone who exists in this century. It’s a spa town and the main swimming pool is a joke. I’d advise Leek pool or Chapel leisure centre. It’s a generous 2 stars I’ve given

Negative experience: Heavily geared to selling membership

Lisa B 6 years ago

Negative experience: I thought at first it was going to be very clean, as we were asked to either take our shoes off or wear covers before entering the changing rooms. Unfortunately other members of the public have a different level of cleanliness to myself, as the changing room floor was NOT clean at all! And this is not right as it's a public swimming pool area people!! So for the ones that can't follow hygiene rules I suggest you don't use the facilities! Unfortunately this has put us off visiting again with our little boy :(

Izzy Davies 6 years ago

Negative experience: Very poor availability for swimming. Recently went for a mid afternoon swim, 10 minutes after being in the pool I was asked to leave as they were starting swimming lessons (I wasn't told prior to getting in). Tried to take our baby swimming at the weekend, to find the childs pool is closed all day Saturday bar a 45 minute period (at which point the main pool is full of floats so you cant have a normal swim in that). The pool is often very cold also.

Reece Hobson 6 years ago

Positive experience: Very good . Clean. It does move your children up the levels slowly so they get more money through lessons though.

Rebecca Longden 6 years ago

Negative experience: Took my baby here yesterday. We were told they didn't sell any baby items from birth to 1. When we got there they did sell nappies for younger babies. The baby pool is supposed to be heated at a certain temp and my partner got in with my son and said it was very cold. Very disappointed and won't be returning.

Negative experience: Average in every aspect. A missed opportunity after many years being shut for refurbishment. Could have improved the facility and enhanced what is on offer, or even rebuilt in a different location. But sadly the British disease of ineptitude, incompetence, and lack of vision is strong in Buxton council who directed the refurbishment.

Billy Fisher 7 years ago

Positive experience: It is a quite hygienic, lively place. In the gym, there are workouts you can do in groups (as is the same in the pool). In the pool you can just swim, lane swim, have lessons or accompany your child to splash hour (where there are inflatable swimming toys and floats to play with). The only problem is it is freezing most of the time.

Georgia Wild 7 years ago

Negative experience: 9.10 Sunday morning. ..find it shut when website says it should be open. No answer or answering machine message when I rang.

Augustus Gloop 8 years ago

Positive experience: A very small and dated (opened 1972) centre for a town of Buxton's resident population, let alone the thousands of tourists on top. It essentially consists of a small pool and small gym, although I understand there's a room for classes too. There's no sauna or steam room. The gym has excellent equipment, however and the staff seemed pleasant. £5.70 a session for guests is very excessive. A classic case of council mismanagement.

Luke Garner #17 8 years ago

Positive experience: Excellent place.. the only thing that let's it down is that the lanes are too narrow when it is mixed lane and all welcome..

Daniel Morton 8 years ago

Negative experience: Great equipment but unfortunately too small, if it's busy you won't get on anything, bigger and better gyms in Buxton that can actually house it's members! This is one of the most expensive and SMALLEST in Buxton
