Negative experience: I’ve been a member of your leisure center for the past four months, and while I appreciate the variety of classes and facilities you provide, I wanted to share some concerns regarding cleanliness and maintenance standards. Cleanliness of Facilities: The toilets, shower areas, and showers are often in a less-than-clean state, which is disappointing for a facility of this nature. Last week, when I used Studio 1, the mirrors were covered with fingerprints, and I noticed the same condition during a Pilates class in the same room last night. This suggests the area isn’t being cleaned regularly or thoroughly. Maintenance of Equipment: In comparison to other centre's I’ve used, such as the Totton and Lymington locations, the overall upkeep of equipment and cleanliness here falls short. These other centres consistently maintain tidy, well-maintained facilities, which creates a much more pleasant experience. As a paying member, I believe maintaining high cleanliness and hygiene standards should be a priority, especially in shared spaces. I’m confident that addressing these concerns will enhance the experience for all members.

Positive experience: Yet again there were no cloth wipes in the gym and only one dispenser had paper towels. It seems with most visits we have either the cloth wipes OR the antibacterial sprays. Please get someone to check regularly and keep things stocked up. Thanks

Fantastic experience: The fitness center is truly remarkable. Positive experience: The swimming pool is excellent. Been self teaching our son confidence of swimming (we take him to swimming lessons but he has a distrust of water generally). He always insists on a hot dog and soft play afterwards so it's always a little costly, otherwise we would go more, but it is a lovely and enjoyable experience every time we go. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful.

Positive experience: Used to love this place. But under 2s are now £5 and the ball pit never works (thr suction and ball drop) and they still charge full price. The slide in the bigger part has children running up it. Our paid session was up and was giving 1 year old some food we brought and was sternly told off as only the £5 meal deal can be consumed on premises. I don't fancy white bread sandwiches and pombears they have a good choice of flavored milk if you give your kid that. Also they are now doing timed sessions which I think will be great at busy times.

Hey Nicole, thank you so much for this review. With rising costs, we have had to raise pricing, however, we believe we offer a fantastic facility for the local community. The ball pit should be fixed soon, however, this does take time. Unfortunately, as for the slide, we are unable to monitor children's behaviour but if it is ever deemed dangerous please feel free to inform a member of staff. We try to offer a varied menu for our young visitors and this is something we will continuously look to improve. We are glad you are a fan of the timed sessions, we believe this is a necessary change that will make it a safer and fairer experience for all.

Positive experience: I took my son and a friend to the soft play today. They were having fun until 7 kids ganged up on my son and spat at him! 1 of them too old to be there. Parents please talk to your kids about playing nice and stop blaming other kids for YOUR kids unkind behaviour.

Negative experience: Only one Therapy Swim a week , the water is freezing and the disabled changing shower room has a filthy ripped unhygenic shower seat⁉️

Negative experience: I am concerned re lack of communication about cancelled classes. I have swim only membership which includes aqua so if this is cancelled I would appreciate info on the news page. Also sauna and steam rooms being out for months means I am regretting paying for a year up front for swim only. Perhaps a refund could be considered?

Negative experience: I’m just about to cancel my membership. The sauna has been out of action since pre Covid. The steam room has been out of action more than not. Now it is closed for refurbishment. On enquiry, I’m told that this will take 3 months. I’m sure one can build a house in three months. Sunday’s Pilates class has been moved to 8.00 without any reference to faithful attendees. Last week the men’s showers were cold. The communication is so bad - why not tell people or even the trainers before they freeze to death. This week aqua aerobics on Friday disappeared from the timetable. There is never any explanation communicated - one had to enquire each time. All this and more and the fees just keep increasing with services diminishing. I don’t feel users are appreciated as fee paying customers. Do the sums before joining and prepare to be flexible, let down and constantly disappointed.

The sauna is currently undergoing a huge renewal project, and members will be treated to a brand-new, health suite. The process will take a considerable amount of time due to the complexities involved but we guarantee the wait will be worth it. We are looking at better ways to communicate changes in class times via the app or social media. We are constantly investing in the centre and our priority will always be customer satisfaction.

Positive experience: This is my local pool of choice. I like the size of the learner pool for my children, it’s slightly deeper at one end so they can do a bit more like jump in. And grown ups can keep their shoulders under the water. The pool sides always look clean and tidy. Generally the water is of a good temperature. Reception is well staffed with products on display and a nice cafe where you can get Costa. Never long queues. All newly done. Lovely soft play area. Big hit for my kids. And plenty of room for the grown ups to sit. My main issue I have is around cleanliness of the changing area floors. They often look dirty. The thought of having to take shoes off and walk barefoot is not always appealing! I imagine in the winter it’s a high traffic area and very difficult to maintain. And of course it’s a local authority pool so I imagine budget is tight for cleaning. But I do wonder if more could be done? Then my score would go up!

Hey Clare, thank you so much for your honest and valuable feedback. We really do appreciate it. We are working incredibly hard on the changing room floors. We appreciate that when there are high traffic times such as Swim Academy and school use cleanliness levels can drop. The challenge is to be able to clean when so many people are in the changing room. We are exploring options on how we could implement a no-shoe policy in the wet changing room which hopefully will help us greatly. However, we wish to do this in a manner which is still reasonable, and practical while not being an added inconvenience to our members. We will continue to strive to make our environment pristine and are constantly looking at new ways to improve our overall cleanliness.

Fantastic experience: I have been a member now for over 20 years, and I have seen some very significant improvements over the past six months thanks to Ross and the team. I would highly recommend this leisure centre to everyone because the team of staff is excellent and supportive and the  service is great, also the equipment is brand new and of a really high quality. Lastly, by being a member, you are  supporting a non-profit organisation, so all the money  goes back into the leisure centres.

Fantastic experience: I use the gym daily and since the refurbishment of the complete gym, the experience has changed. New equipment, redecoration etc. The personal trainers are excellent and offer the user great info with regards to your requirements. I recommend the gym.

Negative experience: There was no hot water for the children to shower in after their cold swimming lesson. We more often than not find something not working: pool is too cold, the poor quality hairdryers out of order, water either cold or not working. I don’t enjoy spending £100+ a month for the facilities

Positive experience: Premium Middle Age Gym (premium because they have electricity). I don't even know where to start... The £44 membership is very, very expensive for what you get for this amount. Locker room, half of the lockers are out of order and the vast majority of the remaining ones are not working. Changing area is filthy and disgusting, they should probably hire a cleaner. The gym is small, a lot of the equipment available is out of order and the rest of it is in very poor condition. Don't even think of dropping your towel on the floor because you will have to throw it in the bin after that. This gym needs major investment and proper management, in its current condition, it won't survive for too long. The customers they have are most likely forced to stay with them because they have no other options in the area, not because they enjoy it. Very disappointed and if you don't believe me, please go and have a look for yourself. December 2023 update It is getting better, this time I would like to give them 5 stars for the gym, but they still have only one star for changing rooms, therefore to meet somewhere in the middle, I will give them only 3 stars for the moment, but I promise to change to five stars, 1 extra for the changing rooms and one for a better value gym membership for those interested only for gym. Anyway we do appreciate the new improvements and good luck with the other issues.

Negative experience: Would it hurt to maybe clean the showers and changing rooms, really don’t want to see peoples hair on the floor and stuck to the walls, peoples old shower scum on the wall. Peoples chewing gum stuck on the benches. It’s just nasty and makes me not want to go back

Negative experience: Gone down hill since being taken over by freedom leisure. Complained about leak from roof of viewing area - still present a week later with no warning signs and kids playing in it. I'd avoid but nothing else in the area. Edit: finally being repaired 3 weeks later...

Hey Philip, thank you so much for your feedback. This was unfortunately an internal pipe rainwater pipe which we had to arrange both a survey and out-of-hours scaffolding to resolve. We did have in place significant signage explaining the situation on the doors to the viewing area and also on the glass railings. We sincerely apologise, as we do appreciate it took time to resolve fully but it was essential to do so safely and correctly.

Positive experience: I've been at this gym for near three years now and my membership is looking more and more likely to be cancelled. Whoever is making the absurd decisions at this gym really needs the sack. I started using this gym for the larger area, better equipment and access to the sauna/steam room. In the past year the sauna/steam has been inoperable numerous times due to being broken. Then we had the energy crisis which is fair enough, however the opening times are few and far between and, as I'm sure most will agree, inconvenient. Opening times are not as advertised. Having been kicked out of the gym today by a member of staff simply doing his job, he could only apologise to me for the fact it has not been displayed that it closes AN HOUR before closing, despite every weekday being closed just before closing. Not being able to purchase anythjng from reception two hours and a half hours before closing on a Saturday due to money being counted is an outrageous decision as well. Gym equipment is great, however so many things are getting broken (No fault of the gym) and repaired months after they break (Absolutely the fault of the gym). The improved space in the freeweights as fab... If I I fancy doing cardio in all the space not taken up by equipment. No new benches, no new weights, no new machines... What was the point again? And lastly the lockers. Everytime I visit a new locker is broken. This has been an issue for years now. Keys don't come out, locks removed as they broke and pound coins no longer holding. All of this for the great price of £40 a month. There's absolutely somethings I've missed too (Fans never being on in the cardio section comes to mind). I have no interest in the fact I get access to other gyms in Hampshire. I live in Hythe. My gym is in Hythe. I'm not going to Lymington or Totton when there's a gym near me; I'm sure many other people would agree with me on that! I really feel like the gym needs a community suggestion box to understand what the people ACTUALLY want. Because the main pool being 1°c warmer is absolutely not on the majorities priority list. I've seen a lot of reviews about staff recently around the site, not sure why they're so negative as the staff seem to be doing their best when I'm about. UPDATE: Changed to three stars with the launch of the new look gym. Equipment is superb but lacks attachments for cables (Some could maybe use more oil as the cables feel stiff rather than the weight being the resistance). No provisions for calves still with the new leg press been disappointing as its two seperate played not one. Other than that, it's a massive step up and I've been impressed with it. Lockers still broken, sauna/steam times still not what is expected and still pricey all facts considered. Seen someone talk about a gym only option - that would be a great idea.

Positive experience: My grand children thoroughly enjoyed the soft play. I would advise that you eat before going as the food and drinks are pricey, you are not allowed to take your own.

Positive experience: Continuing to improve. Reception can sometimes be very busy. Swimming lessons are quite good. Wet change is sometimes clean, sometimes not, depending upon usage, versus cleaning schedule. Takes them a while to sort out maintenance: The showers are now warm again. The lockers are slowly being upgraded with a more robust locking mechanism.

Negative experience: Staff are rude and extremely unhelpful, when arriving at the gym for the first time, the woman behind the counter ignored me, which I didn't mind due to the 2 mums and a group of children, next these line of people just kept piling passed me, she finally acknowledged me and said "asked me what are you waiting for?" I said it my first visit to the gym, she replied"with we need to get these people throw." swimming pool freezing. When I asked a lifeguard what's the code for the sauna, she replied with "it's not" I said sorry what's the code? "It's not open!" With an extremely condescending tone in her voice.

Negative experience: Used to love this place, but since the change of hands it just isn't the same. I can never see a member of staff in the gym when I've wanted help with things. Whilst I understand that energy costs have caused freedom to make the decision of closing the sauna and steam I'm a bit confused, for me personally I think it would be better to close them spring and summer rather than winter. In winter people want that nice hot sauna and steam to relax their joints and muscles and feel the warmth. I for one am not fussed about a sauna in summer when it's hot outside anyway. The pool is often cold....again whilst I understand the energy cost, do it in summer when people find a cold pool more refeeshing not during winter when we are all feeezing anyway!! The membership prices have gone up, yet there are less facilities which I feel is a rip off. Also....went to the gym the other day only to find the showers were out of use....First time in 14 years I have ever seen this happen. What's going on Freedom? I feel you can do better than this for your costumers surely? If things don't change I will be withdrawing my membership from this place for the first time ever, increasing membership prices and bringing down facilities is just not good enough I'm afraid.

We are in the midst of a well-publicised energy crisis with the price of electricity and gas increasing at an alarming rate. Businesses like ours are facing crippling increases in energy costs due to the upward movement in wholesale energy costs. However, unlike domestic supply we do not have the limited protection of an energy price cap. For us these increases are running into the many millions of pounds. We are currently trialling the reopening of our sauna and steam room facilities at both Totton and Lymington Health and Leisure. Our teams will be reporting on the energy consumption and if successful we will hopefully be in a position to reopen the facilities across the New Forest centres. We sorry to hear about the shower closure. Please be assured that a technician has been called and is attending our centre today to rectify the issues. Negative experience: way too overpriced, especially that the gym is very very small. Some how the price jumped from £2:20 to £4.75 not worth the money, and the new reception is unorganised

Our gym is actually a very large area with a separate area for our new equipment ELEVATE, a separate free weights area as well as a cardio section and our SYNRGY area which offers small group training. Negative experience: I really enjoyed the leisure centre until just recently I found it to be going down hill which is a shame Our membership have gone up which fine I understand the cost of living has increased but very disappointing that we no longer have sauna also a lot of the gym machines, in the gym are turned off and not left on the screen has a note which said find a member of staff and there turn it on I was in the gym for 40min and not once’s did I see a member of staff and last moan swimming pool I understand it’s a swimming pool not a hot tub but my god it very cold I understand in the summer but winter really puts me off going in I don’t mind but we can afford to make a new cafe and play zone but can’t keep swimming pool warm or machine turned on don’t no what I’m paying for

Thank you for your comments Celia. Unfortunately we have needed to make some tough decisions across a range of areas in the short term whilst we try to manage the ongoing increases in utility costs. In this instance the temporary closure of the sauna and steam has been deemed necessary but we hope that either through further Government support for the sector or through reduced tariffs, normal service can resume in the not too distant future. As a not for profit leisure trust, we simply cannot absorb the +300% increases we are now having to pay for gas and electricity. Some machines in the gym have been switched off during off-peak times to reduce our energy consumption. However, any member of staff can turn equipment back on for you so please do let anyone know what piece of equipment you would like to use and we'll get it up and running for you. Whilst we absolutely accept this is not the response you were hoping for, we hope it gives some context to the reasons behind our short term decisions at this time.

Thanks for your feedback Colin and we are sorry to hear that would not recommend our facilities. Due to the current pandemic, a number of our facilities are temporarily unavailable for a number of reasons. Most commonly it is because it would be impossible to enforce social distancing in smaller areas such as the shower areas. These areas would need to be thoroughly disinfected in between uses and currently our priorities are to disinfect and clean all public areas such as our changing rooms, gyms, group fitness studios and pools. We are working hard to bring as many facilities as we can safely back in use but unfortunately current restrictions do limit this. Guidelines do change daily so we are starting to reopen more and more facilities. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time and we hope to welcome you back once restrictions lift further.

Fantastic experience: You don't take long to track me down! I went to Applemore for my second Pfizer vaccination today. It was very well organised as usual. I arrived 15 mins. early but was told to go straight in. The staff were very helpful and courteous. I did not need any help, but several others had walking and other difficulties but the staff were with them all the time if necessary. As before, I felt nothing and was then shown into the "recovery room" to wait for the 15min. rest. So I was jabbed and out by the time of my appointment time. No problems or complaints at all.

Negative experience: THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED IN MY LIFE!!! The receptionist (Jo) was very rude and had a lot of attitude for simply asking her to open the gate. Therefore I made a complaint to the general manager (no name given when greeted) about the customer service I received. The actual, unbelievable response I got from him (in front of the rude receptionist) was 'I will always take my staffs side'. So I asked him that no matter how the customer is treated you will always take the staffs side. And his exact response was ' I wasn't there to see the sitiation' and 'will not be taking it any furthur' . Absolutely appalling customer service. And as a recently new customer for their swimming lessons, I will never go there again. I warn everyone to be aware of the shocking customer service skills this leisure centre has.

Negative experience: First swimming teacher threatened my soon with no more lessons, then we change teacher and she was amazing, my soon as private lessons so I pay 80£ a month so I expect a good service. Second the receptionist that work there on the evening around 17:35 is the most rude person that I’ve ever seen, I’m a client so I expect a good attitude but no she must do some training about the attitude, I’m really thinking changing centre because she is always rude to me and my wife.

Negative experience: I signed my son up for swimming classes. He is 5 is confident in the water not the best at putting his face in but happy to jump in ect. After a year of being there he is now petrified of the water, was effecting his school life and wont even go fun swimming with us, I complained 3 times in this time and my final complaint was the last time I took him. So thank you ive spent £300 on nothing.

Negative experience: A poorly managed health and fitness centre. Regarding fitness classes, If you're unable to contact the centre within 2 hours of a booked class to inform them you cannot attend, your account is frozen until you pay a charge. If you make contact after that 2 hour window, you're still frozen & charged. Penalising people for no-shows isn't a bad approach, but recognition that illness, accident or bereavement will impede an individuals ability to make contact, ESPECIALLY when the class is early in the morning, would be a step forward. This approach fosters an attitude where the member can't be bothered to call ahead as they'll be penalised regardless. Ironically, this approach screws over Applemore itself as they will not have the opportunity to fill the otherwise vacant booking with a paying customer and has the potential to alienate the existing subscribers. An ill conceived idea. The scan entry process would be great if it actually worked consistently. Too often it fails and requires manual intervention from the staff, which can, and has, resulted in the system believing the attendee is a no-show, causing untold issues and debates, not to mention the queues building at busy times. Additionally, you have to question their morality when they freeze an account, but are more than happy to continue to take a member's subscription payment, which is particularly damning. Perhaps the biggest problem is the inflexibility of staff to deal with these issues. Be it the quality of hiring, training, policy or management, there's a clear disconnect from the customer. Also, there's no 'register' process for fitness classes. This means that once you're in the centre, technically, you can jump in any class, leading to overcrowding and potential safety concerns. This is a great example of failure to manage and process adequately. The over all feel is that the centre is skewed toward younger demographic and today's gym culture. Excercise for youth is no bad thing, but as a council owned facility, it desperately needs to realise it MUST cater to ALL ages equally and it's desire to compete with David Lloyd type centres means it alienates people who don't fit that demographic. Summary: reasonable centre, very poorly managed.

Thank you for your comments; The no show policy was implemented due to the increasing amount of people who would book classes and not show up which then led to many customers becoming increasingly frustrated when trying to book a class that was shown as full only then to find that there were 10 spaces free when the class commenced. We are experiencing approximately 800-1000 on the day class cancellations per week across our Health & Leisure venues with 75% of these on the day cancellations occurring after midday, therefore there is very little opportunity to re-fill these spaces as it is too late in the day. Customers then may have made other plans and we lose income as spaces are not filled. The customers who regularly attend classes are generally very supportive of the no show initiative and this is backed by significant feedback with our customer satisfaction survey. If you do receive a no show penalty and feel that there are circumstances as to why the no show was incorrectly applied or perhaps personal reasons as to why you couldn’t attend a class then there is an appeals procedure and each appeal is looked at on an individual basis. Unfortunately, there are regular instances where users have stated that they definitely did attend the class but after investigation, we conclude that they didn’t. We do not take registers as a rule and under the forthcoming GDPR data protection legislation it will not be possible to do so unless we have a valid reason. If customers perceive that instructors are taking a register then they may not swipe through the gates properly on the basis that they think the instructor is manually attending them for a session. We will take on your feedback with regards to the issue of customers jumping into classes. Should an instructor realise that there are more people booked into the class than on the booking sheet or the maximum number is exceeded then any customer found entering classes without prior booking this will be spoken to and if it happens on a regular basis have their membership revoked. Our fitness offerings do provide opportunities for all and we are certainly not adopting a David Lloyd culture. We offer arrange of activities and classes for all.
