Negative experience: I used to go to Better in Swiss Cottage to swim and that was a really nice pool. After moving south I looked for local pools and found Clapham Leisure Centre that used to be owned by Better but is now Active Lambeth. The pool facilities could be nice if it wasn’t for the lack of cleanliness. On the changing rooms, showers and the pool itself it is not uncommon to see clumps of hair, plasters, general dirt. I’ve seen the employees clean the poolside by pushing the dirt around with a power washer in random directions. Then I stopped going to the pool for that reason and started attending classes and the gym facilities. The classes are decent I think no one expects them to be anything more than basic for the price point. The styles really vary depending on the instructor. Would be nice if there was a choice in more aerobic classes like Zumba or HIIT, dance. I’ve not attended the gym much but it has a lot of equipment and free weights, when I went in the female changing rooms they seemed quite clean. Bathrooms almost never have soap in them and the entry gates have been broken for months.

Positive experience: It's a good place with very nice staff

Negative experience: Awful facility. Staff are useless and rude, and have to buzz you in as the QR scanner doesn’t work. Pool is usually way over booked, and no indication of when kids lessons are as they take up half the pool (even 2 in a lane whilst there are 8-10 in a lane for the public). Don’t waste your time coming here.

Negative experience: Due to weak management and invariably entitled and lazy staff, the whole gym is disgustingly filthy. I would go as far as calling the place a bio-hazard. The men's gym changing rooms haven't been cleaned in months and it reeks of historical stains. The cleaning sign placed outside makes a nice prop, however, the stains on and inside the lockers are also a nice touch. The AC hasn't been working recently, which is just as well, as the filters are visibly furry with dust. Getting in has become a chore - the QR code entry system and automated doors are perpetually broken. You may try to engage with the staff who are either glued to their mobiles or chatting amongst themselves and treat customers with the utmost contempt. For people looking for a gym, I recommend signing up elsewhere.

Negative experience: Terrible gym , entrance scanner thing never works so always have to ask to be buzzed in , usually no hand wash in many of the bathrooms , its freezing inside the gym .

Negative experience: I’m not surprised by the negative reviews. The gym floor is small and overcrowded, I’ve never once seen anyone cleaning the equipment and certain machines stay out of service for months at a time. The pool is constantly full of kids so the cleanliness is poor, the last time I swam the pool fitting room I was in had blood stains and smears all over the walls, I moved to a new changing room that then had a clump of hair on the floor. On top of that, the app is rubbish and front desk staff are often rude and moody. But overall I figured for Clapham, this is probably as cheap as it gets so what do you expect (not that £62 is even that cheap) The worst part is I informed them I wished to cancel my subscription with 9 days until the next payment, and they point blank refused to cancel it. It’s hidden in the fine print that they require over 30 days notice, so you can cancel your subscription but they’ll still charge you an extra month. Zero empathy or helpfulness in the interaction. Legit worst gym experience I’ve ever had

Negative experience: The place has begun to dramatically fall apart in recent months. The men's gym changing rooms haven't been cleaned in months and it reeks of a backed-up drain. The cleaning sign placed outside makes a nice prop, however. The strawberry lace on the wall and the protein shake stains on the lockers are also a nice touch. The AC units have been turned off recently. Which is just as well, as the filters are visibly furry with dust. Just getting in has become a chore - the QR code entry system and automated doors are perpetually broken. Enter, look like you belong there, and you'll be let in for free. I don't have high expectations or demands. I go in, use my equipment, leave. But give it another few months and the gym will become a biohazard. The quality trajectory is firmly downhill - for people looking for a gym at the time of this review, I recommend signing up elsewhere.

Positive experience: The place does the job. Pros: Pretty sizeable gym area that seems to be well equipped. The adult pool has slow and fast lanes to swim laps, and the kids pool is not too deep and properly heated. Cons: There's a lot of things that are falling apart. In the pool area, for example, the shower stalls are grimy and the doors rusty. There's no space to put soap/shampoo (so must be on the floor) and towels just get draped over the door. And if a parent is bringing a child, forget a family shower room - that doesn't exist. The stalls are too small for two and the outside ones are not warm. Because it's logistically impossible to leave a child unattended for the parent to shower, they're likely to just go home still covered in chlorine.

Negative experience: I enjoy the gym and the fitness classes. Very friendly staff as well as the hard work of the cleaning staff and they are helpful The reception staff do a very good job What let’s them down is the lack of good quality yoga teachers There’s the same two women instructors who seem to have most of the classes in the week I cannot attend their classes because of the quality and instructions they give. I will only attend when these two have holidays because in place of them they will have a good quality instructor

Negative experience: Went here with my 3 year old. The front desk staff were confused about their own timetables and sent me to the wrong pool. After chatting with the lifeguards, I found where I was meant to be. We changed and showered. However, it turned out the pool was absolutely freezing. The lifeguards acknowledged this with a blasé attitude. One commented, "oh, it's way too cold in the pool for her." So, within ten minutes of arriving, we'd be sent to the wrong pool, then shown the correct pool only to discover that it was absolutely freezing. Apparently "it happens all the time" according to the lifeguard. So, sopping wet from the pre-shower and having a completed exactly zero swimming, we left. Very frustrating.

Negative experience: Place seems to be starting to fall apart despite them continuing to raise entry fees. Always issues with the pools including the boiler not working - perhaps it’s an underhanded way to cut costs?

Positive experience: Great community sports facility at reasonable prices, for London. Good gym, pool and fitness classes. Would be even better if it was expanded further to include squash courts and a sauna like some other local centres around south west London.

Positive experience: The pool was cold and so were the changing rooms. For this reason alone I won't be going back. The pool is a good size though and there are plenty of staff around which is always a good thing.

Positive experience: Everything great but only one remark… no water fountains I could find

Negative experience: I went to the centre this morning, for the first time and I could not be more disappointed and shocked with the receptionist’s welcome and I interaction. She paid more attention to her phone than me, I was talking with her she stoped replying to me because she started to write on her phone! No me you will not see here! Rudeness no!

Negative experience: Price is very good but facilities are very bad. Gym equipment literally takes months to be fixed (one machine must have been broken since may and I’m writing this in September), IT system is awful (the app is poor and WiFi is bad - there is basically jo reception in gym area).

Fantastic experience: The leisure centre is a great asset for who lives in Clapham, staff is also really friendly. It was such a pleasure to have Bhavana Dawer helping me as soon as I arrived, she was attentive, helpful and very kind!!

Negative experience: Facilities are quite old but ok. However is often not properly clean. Most yoga teachers are actually pilates teachers and don't have much knowledge about yoga. There's only one good yoga teacher. Considering the monthly price is quite a disappointing place.

Positive experience: Booked via the Active Lambeth app, received a barcode email to allow entry. Friendly and helpful receptionist. Nice 25m main pool. Showers could be a little warmer. One pound coin needed for the lockers (should be added to the confirmation email). Some of the locker keys have missing wrist straps. Good experience overall.

Fantastic experience: I love it. Very friendly, helpful staff, like a big family !

Negative experience: The sports hall is usually found in a mess and not cleaned up for racquet sports in the morning. Badminton nets are not setup at all and plastic drink bottles/dirt not cleared up. This is a known issue yet the management does nothing about it. I hope the management take a note of this as I have told them verbally each time!

Negative experience: Can't be bothered to replace or fix equipment for weeks. Why? Particularly given the price...

Negative experience: Gym equipment is out of action often for over a month. Particularly leg weight exercise equipment, where there is no similar machine. Means you have to often alter your training programme.

Negative experience: I recently moved to the area and wanted to join this gym, especially the pool, but wanted to try the day gym first to see if I would like the place, but unfortunately NO! I was not allowed in by the woman at the front desk, she made my mood drop. 16.07.2024 (20:36)

Fantastic experience: Brilliant swimming pool. Clean, lots of lanes, good showers, decent hairdryers and friendly and helpful staff. Plus they've just added two drying machines. Great. I'm sure the rest of the facilities are great too. But I only really use the pool.

Negative experience: I have swum at this pool for 15 years but today the very officious woman at the counter would not let me in for a 20 minute swim because she said the pool was fully booked. It was obviously not full and one lane only had one person in it. She seemed very pleased with herself to be able to turn me away, obviously enjoying the power trip, and when I said that this had never happened before in 15 years of regular swimming she laughed and said 'well you have been lucky then!' Very unpleasant.

Positive experience: The gym is mediocre as well as the pool, yet it's the most expensive gym I've been to and 0 perks as a member- like bringing a friend or deals on gym and swim. I'd you want to swim here, much more worth it than bothering with the gym

Negative experience: Could have given you 5 stars as you deserve it but you miss one “litte” detail….. the water is freezing ! If i need to warm under the shower every 5 min - got one at home aswel .. Kids pool same story. Have seen over the reviews that you promise to solve it but can’t see results at the water temperatures… Can’t wait for the summer as the hot weather sounds more promising .

Positive experience: The women's toilets in the gym have been faulty for months, with water running all the time. Can you get them fixed quickly? I've already informed your staff. Not only is it more expensive for you, but it's a complete waste of water, so sad.

Positive experience: A typical leisure centre..very anonymous. Never have any friendly greeting or similar. But affordable in price.. never seems to have soap in their bathrooms when we visit on weekends. The coaches in the gymnastics lessons really can be okay. Some wear their heads up very high and ignore you and your children others are warm hearted and kind.so difficult to say. The gym itself looks okay when we pass so does the pool

Positive experience: I'd up my review to 4 stars but the changing facilities in pool area are so filthy - hair everywhere, showers have brown grime that clearly just needs a scrub. I feel yucky even with fit flops. Also the equipment in studio ought to be deep cleaned every fortnight at the very least. The yoga blocks and dumbells are clearly dirty even if you wipe them down.

Negative experience: I’ve been attending swimming lessons at this leisure centre for a while now, but unfortunately, the persistently cold water temperature in the pool has become quite challenging. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to focus and enjoy the lessons due to the uncomfortable coldness of the water. As temperatures drop outside, the pool water seems to be getting even colder. I hope the management can address this issue as it significantly affects the overall experience.

Negative experience: Extremely dirty unsafe and smelly with flies and insects flying around toilet and changing room, the floor and shower are always dirty and wet. It has not been cleaned for the past week now and we complained and yet nothing has been done, clearly the manager don’t give a F about it.

Negative experience: Went the other day with the kids. Everyone was complaining about how cold the water was. Its winter now and its supposed to be a heated pool. It wasn't like this before Lambeth outsourced the running of the pool.

Positive experience: Never been here but for some reason Google maps thinks I have. I’m sure it’s very nice. Don’t forget your goggles!

Negative experience: The temperature of water in the swimming pool has become completely unbearable. It was not particularly warm in summer, but now with temperatures dropping down outside, the main swimming pool is just freezing. Even adults have to use hot shower to warm up during the swimming sessions. The small swimming pool is not much better, I am going to the baby swimming lessons, and my son is shivering even though he has a high quality swimming thermosuit.

Positive experience: Went there to visit my niece swim it was clean and tidy and very busy

Negative experience: Don't book a badminton session on Saturday or Sunday from 8am, because the Leisure Centre those days start working from 8am as well. So, you will waste time when you go up to the second floor, change your sneakers, and so on. As a result, your session starts 5 minutes later. Terrible management does not give people time to change their clothes.

Positive experience: The gym itself it’s quite spacious and the offer of machines is good, however the classes have room for improvement. They should be following the Les Mills programmes as they are the latest in fitness and all the rest of the council gyms have it. I personally used to train at Queens Mothers Sport Centre in Victoria and all the instructors follow it and attract loads of people!

Negative experience: Gym equipment is always missing, dumbbells always all over the place, cables have been broken for months with no sign of fixing them used to be a lot better before active lambeth took over.

Positive experience: Good facilities for all ages, helpful front desk. Baby swimming on Tuesdays is great as the instructor is the best! However, the water tends to be a bit cold sometimes. Showers are hot, though. Changing facilities could be warmer (it's the ventilation I think) and cleaned a bit more often. There's a lounge/lobby/reception area wheree you can hang out before and after the class which is great. Good value for money, all in all.

Negative experience: Clapham is literally the worst area to get a gym membership. Therefore, the best option to get something decent in a decent price would be this forsaken place. 6 years active menber here I have never complained or issued any protest towards the downhill H&S standards or the poor management style but patience has its limits. This place does not even guarantee your own safety anymore. - Run-down equipment - Unhinged narcissistic new audiences - Untrained employees that they don't enforce any rule which leads you to feel like you are in a jungle to stand for yourself - Horrible standards of hygiene getting worse and worse - Employees antagonising or straight up dismissing peoples concerns - Whatever this is => Dear ...., sorry to hear this. However, our service team is already working and taking major steps to improve our service delivery toward excellent customer service Great facilities of a bygone era with a lack of market competition leads you to come here unfortunately. Positive experience: Editing my review, the gym has improved and the machines have been fixed

Negative experience: Since Lambeth has taken over, the quality of the gym has deteriorated significantly. When machines break, it takes months to get them fixed (the lat pull down machine has been broken for 3 months). Equipment has also been missing including lots dumbells and barbells. Not the quality I’d expect for the price of the membership.

Negative experience: Have been a member since Dec 2022 before it was taken over by Active Lambeth. It was a 4 star gym before but they are clearly not putting any money into it. Broken machines, no dumbbells and lack of general equipment. Happy to change this review if something changes but as the pull down machine has now been “out of order” for 3 months I don’t see this happening.

Negative experience: Absolutely terrible management. If you ever encounter any issue (from water filter not being changed in 3 months to verbal assault in the premises), don't expect the management to care or actively do anything about it besides 'apologising for the inconvenience'. It's a shame because the facilities are actually ok, but the lack of upkeep and maintenance (the machines never get properly clean, I have seen the same stains since I started going there +1 year ago, I don't use the bathroom soap dispenser because it's more likely to catch an infection using it than not) and most of all, incompetent management really let down the community. It's gone even more downhill since the Council took over. Just to add a comment to the very stereotypical response from the gym: if verbal abuse wouldn't be tolerated you would as much as have given a warning to the aggressor, which did not happen. Zero trust in an establishment that actively welcomes aggressors in their premises without repercussion.

Negative experience: Way too expensive for a council run gym. Lambeth seem pretty useless at everything they do but you'd think as a left wing council they might get a community fitness centre right, not so. This facility is more expensive to use than local private gyms (some of which include full access to over 300 gyms around the country!). If you're disabled, it's even more unfair. You only get a discount if you use the gym off peak. So if you're disabled and work, forget it. Well done Lambeth, you've done it again!

Negative experience: Water filter remains unchanged for over 6 weeks now, urinal in men's toilet is blocked for around 4 weeks, 18 and 28 kg dumbbells are missing for a few weeks and a long bar for around 2 months. There was no soap in disabled and men's toilet. Plus, do we need an evacuation map? When are these going to be addressed?

Negative experience: My tenure at the gym is over 1 year and overall it's a good gym. However, there are a few issues that most people won't see unless you're a regular. -Front desk poor customer service- While the staff at Active Lambeth are friendly, they struggle with technology and 9/10 times can't solve a problem or answer questions. I'm not saying they are incompetent I'm saying that they need better training. Their default answer to most things is 'I'm not sure, please contact head office'. Great customer service would be 'I'm not sure but let ME contact head office for you and let me get your details'. -A decrease in value for money- Over time gym equipment has been out of order for months yet the membership price increases all the time. I've asked management for ETAs and often followed up but often got excuses from them. -the mobile app is buggy- Almost everything happens in the App but their app is full of bugs and is a poor UX design. If Active Lambeth could fix at least 2 of the 3 issues I've mentioned then it would be an amazing experience and they would get a higher rating.

Positive experience: I only visited to book a class but the place was clean, had a good range of facilities. Only negative was the front of house staff. Unhelpful, and not very bothered about acknowledging the users of the centre.

Negative experience: The swimming pool is great but recently changed from being on the Better membership to active Lambeth. They didn’t bother asking users and just transferred to active Lambeth… cancelling wasn’t too difficult. However the active Lambeth app is terrible and it’s now impossible to book a swim session. What a shame.

Positive experience: Nobody on front desk and couldn't get in, but someone did come along eventually. The lifeguard who was there at the time was really lovely though. Really friendly and updated us with times of pool closure and provided pool toys for my boy to play with. Pool was really shallow when we got in so he even lowered the floor for us. They also played some great songs while we were there. We had a great time there and will be back next week.

Negative experience: Since Active Lambeth took over opening/closure times have been an absolute gamble. On the app it says closes at 8pm weekends but then ive been kicked out of the pool twice at 4pm because they said they were closing?! Today its supposed to be open for another 2 hours and somehow I can’t seem to book a gym session as there haven’t been any slots from 4pm onwards? SORT OUT THE OPENING TIMES ASAP! Really frustrating!

Fantastic experience: Went into Clapham today to join the gym. Jean was front of house. She was so friendly and helpful. Looking forward to getting healthier and fitter.

Negative experience: This centre was great when Better managed it but now the app doesn’t work, the website doesn’t work, there is no way to login in, no one to contact and they seem to have put all the prices up. Very disappointing

Fantastic experience: Just moved to the area, wasn't aware of the change over from the previous company to now Active Lambeth. The manager I met (Jean) was really friendly and helpful. I felt very welcomed and I enjoyed my swim, on the way out I even had a cheeky sandwich and orange juice. Will certainly be joining this lovely local leisure facility.

Negative experience: Awful service from employees on the diversity hire list who are clearly unemployable otherwise. Also marked down for being "cashless" which is clearly discriminatory and yet still tell you you need a £1 coin for the locker.

Positive experience: I visited Clapham Leisure Centre and found the gym and pool area to be well-maintained, but the changing rooms could use more attention. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable

Negative experience: My wallet was stolen from the locker.someone broke my lock and stole my wallet..quite disappointed how it has been handled as the manager told me that it was the 3rd incident in 2 weeks and that people can get in the gym from the fire exit.that feels no secure at all and have to cancel my membership..shame as I was enjoying the gym..

Fantastic experience: The facilities are clean, easy to access, the studio is well equipped and the class I attended was amazing ☺️

Negative experience: Changing room are dirty, it is very noisy, water is cold, and super busy in every lane. I went because my pool was closed for 1 week, i rather go elsewhere.

Negative experience: Pool is too busy during the week and lanes are not managed well. Half the pool plus the small pool are reserved for lessons, and the slow lane is a double combined, leaving only one lane available for everyone else. Near impossible to swim. Booking system is not enforced in any way

Negative experience: This place has gone downhill since the past 3 years. Price has increased massively but no improvements whatsoever. The pool is always full of kids and their lessons. We all pay to have access to the gym and I keep seeing this instructor that uses 3 lanes (2 kids per lane). MENTAL. I’ve complained to the management several times. Everyone has the right to use the pool and at times I’ve been in a lane with even up to 8 other people as there is usually only 1/2 lanes for swimmers… The pool area is always dirty and there are hairs everywhere. Let alone all the hairbands and plasters in the swimming pool. Still not sure why in the UK swim caps and flip flops aren’t mandatory. Gym area, OK, but certainly expensive considering the size. Just cancelled my membership as sadly is not worth it anymore, specially since the full access price is the same as some Virgin active ones…

Positive experience: Great value for money for pay as you go. Clean and well equipped. I go when it off peak and it's not too busy. I wish members would refrain from chatting and texting on their phones whilst sitting at the equipment. Maybe a notice can be out up to remind people.

Negative experience: The care for the gym in this place is abysmal. The equipment is old, beat up and when/if it breaks, you’ll be waiting weeks for it to be repaired. For example, a 26kg dumbell was broken and removed. About 4 weeks went by and still no replacement. I left and joined a proper gym because of this. 3 MORE MONTHS later my friend who still goes there says there is still no replacement if you want a pool, then maybe its worth it, but if you’re looking for a good gym this is not the place.

Positive experience: Good spin classes almost ruined by rude receptionist who started an argument with her manager and denied that I had a booking before I finally figured out how to get the barcode to work.

Negative experience: I didn't know why all the staff are so grumpy, useless and still employed. Then I found out the gym is operated by the government and it all clicked.

Positive experience: I've been taking myself for a swim and actually was able to enjoy this activity myself. My membership with option free swim slots is also encouraging. Gym is more however

Fantastic experience: Amazingly friendly staff. Loads of activities to choose from, the aqua aerobic classes are fun and each teacher takes the time to know if you have any issues before each class

Negative experience: Court floor always dirty Been going there for Sunday volleyball for years and ALWAYS dirty and dusty wherefore very slippery for players. They will never clean it off Roof leaks constantly on a rainy day. Thank you

Fantastic experience: Great leisure centre. I enjoy Ellen's 3 classes every Sunday, pilates into yoga and finishing of with mindfulness. It leaves you feeling so relaxed and refreshed it's great

Fantastic experience: This was the first time I'd been there since it was rebuilt ten years or so ago; we used to go years ago when our daughter was learning to swim. I was very impressed; a friendly welcome from Reception, a clean changing area with proper lockers (you need a £1 coin or a trolley token to use them), step-free access to both pools and to the changing area. The slow swimming lane is the one nearest the steps, and during these sessions, the "deep end" is only 1.5 metres, which I find easy to stand up in. The only downside was that it wasn't easy to find the loos if you didn't know where they were! I will definitely go back, probably next week. ETA 18 November 2022: Delighted to find they have put small shelves in the showers, so one no longer has to grovel on the floor for one's shampoo or shower gel. Thank you, whosever idea that was!

Fantastic experience: Both the pool side staff & the front of desk staff are so helpful here, facilities are always in order and they keep the place clean. This is the best recreation centre in Lambeth in my opinion, please keep up the good work.

Positive experience: My son enjoys his lessons, Rod is a great teacher and pushes my son to do this best swimming at all times.

Fantastic experience: I rejoined the centre back in February and been visiting it three to four times a week. Clean facilitiles, the swimming pool could get crowded at times, but it is clean and I like the water temperature. Recently, I have changed my membership and Sathy (lovely lady at the reception) was very helpful. She is always smiling, positive and provides great customer service.

Fantastic experience: Isn't it just so nice to walk into somewhere, anywhere, and be greeted by smiling, courteous, helpful staff? That is what you will get at the Clapham Leisure Centre on Clapham Manor Street. Plus a decent size swimming pool (25m) and a very fair membership deal for the (fit and sporty) 60+ like me. Fantastic experience: We are visiting from the US. This gym allows a monthly membership option and they have several branches throughout the area. But this community gym has everything we need. They provide so many opportunities to exercise from using weights, treadmills, swimming and numerous classes. It's clean and the equipment is in excellent condition. Sethi at the front desk is so kind and helpful, we also like Jane one of the trainers. Our teenage sons arw working out too. ‍♀️‍♀️

Positive experience: Great swimming pool, that can get a little crowded at times, and lifeguards don't manage the lanes well, but still a good pool.

Positive experience: I like this gym, I like the woman behind the desk she was really nice to me and my friend, the gym has loads of space including the functional zone and the environment is friendly. The badminton Court was also really good and they provide the rackets and the ball but you have to rent it unfortunately.

Positive experience: Typical leisure centre vibes. The gym floor is big though, with more upstairs and a squash court. The expanded free weights section was a huge help, as it can get extremely busy.

Positive experience: I use this pool before work it's a good pool but can get busy.
