Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: Good gym , poor changing rooms
Hi Dave, we're very sorry to hear that the changing rooms were not up to your standard - we prioritise cleanliness at all times. I have passed your comments to the management team.
Positive experience: Staff were friendly what staff I did see, weren’t keen on the layout of this gym and preferred the gym in mildenhall.
Hi Trixie, thanks for leaving some feedback! Our Mildenhall site is much newer, so we can see why you prefer the layout. We're glad you still had a good experience with us, and hope to see you back again soon.
Positive experience: Like the locality and easy access but unfortunately in need of some refreshing/updating… I use the centre for convenience but no matter what time you go the pool is always busy!!
Hi Cici, Thank you for your feedback - we are hoping to do some refreshing in the near future! With regards to the swimming pool, we are proud to be able to offer so many different types of sessions to our customers, which probably makes it feel very busy, but it keeps us going :) In future, you can always speak to a member of our team and they can advise you of quieter times.
Positive experience: Good, but a bit expensive for a family when you only get one hour.
Hi Lucy, we appreciate your feedback and have passed your comments onto our centre manager.
Positive experience: The swimming pool area is fantastic, with exciting flumes that are a hit for both kids and adults. The changing rooms are large and impeccably clean, and the staff is exceptionally helpful and friendly.
Hi Frank, thank you for your positive review - it means a lot to us here at Abbeycroft!
Negative experience: Visited Sunday 11th August around 11.30am and the changing room floors and floors in general were filthy, didn't seem to be a little dirty here and there it was disgusting throughout even around the poolside. Very disappointed!
Negative experience: Me and my 2 mates went swimming came at 12pm and checked in we were nor told that we could only swim for a hour before the session ended flumes we're closed and I payed £16 for 3 kids to go swimming for an hour.
Hi Noah, we are sorry to hear that your experience at Abbeycroft was not as you hoped - we would like to give you four free swimming passes - please visit reception or contact [email protected] to collect these.
Positive experience: offers a wide selection of classes, the gym is well equipped but it's an old building so it's seen better days, definitely feeling it's age.
Positive experience: Visited Wet & wild session with friends today. We were very disappointed the flumes weren't in action as our children had been so excited to go on them. We weren't told at reception they weren't open either! Can't say we would rush to go back!
Thanks for your review. We apologise your most recent visit left you a little disappointed. We have no shoe zone policy in place in our wet side areas and encourage our customers with signage to adhere to helping us maintain a clean and hygienic environment for all. Unfortunately, we do not have the resource to police this with permanent attendants but do regularly monitor throughout the day and enhanced the frequency of cleaning during peak periods. Along with reminders to our customers, we hope together we can provide a pleasant experience for everyone
Negative experience: pool temperature was absolute freezing and cafe staff were absolutely miserable!!
Fantastic experience: The sauna and steam room look very well kept and the changing rooms are clean. I will come back and gladly recommend. 10/10.
Hi Piotr G, thank you for your positive review! We look forward to seeing you again at our centre :)
Negative experience: The gym is not managed, no maintenance nor supervision.... facilities on decline. Some machines replaced but will break soon as no lubricant used... old machines are cluncky or out of order. Two cable machines....accident waiting to happen.... :(
Hi Krzysztof, we’re sorry to hear you rated your recent experience with us as a 1 star. We sincerely apologise that you are dissatisfied with our gym equipment which has affected your visits. Your concerns are important to us, I can assure you health and safety of our customers and staff is our highest priority. We are committed to ensuring a good fitness experience and last week we upgraded some of our equipment which included 6 treadmills, 2 spin bikes and 2 dual adjustable pulley machines. We appreciate this has taken longer than we had hoped to replace ageing equipment but are confident all equipment in operation is safe to use. Once again, we apologise for falling short of your expectations and thank you for your feedback. If you have any further concerns, please feel free to reach out to our management team directly either during your next visit or using our comments portal (https://www.efocus-net.com/BURY_ST_EDMUNDS_LEISURE_CENTRE/Comment_Card/)
Fantastic experience: Very helpful staff
Fantastic experience: Love the classes here, it's a great environment
Negative experience: The only way you can swim here as an adult is if you book lane swim and not everyone wants to swim in a lane. The leisure pool is so shallow you cannot swim in it. We turned up, sat in it angrily and left after 5 minutes after paying to use this pool. Don't bother just go to thetford
Negative experience: Reasonable value swimming sessions let down by sub-standard Paddy & Scotts cafe. Here's some advice: don't say that you close at 3pm when your Saturday staff are shutting up the cafe from 2.30pm and too lazy to serve customers beyond that time!
Positive experience: A great leisure centre for all the family. Great facilities and a great location. The health needs to be attended to more regularly and cleaned.
Fantastic experience: Very nice place, lovely people
Positive experience: I've only been to the Bury LC to play football on the outside pitch. Compared to other pitches around, this is probably one of the better ones with a great playing surface and strong floodlights for the dark nights. The only negative is the central net / mesh that rarely stretches the full length so balls get hit between pitches which can be quite annoying for all groups, especially when there are matches being played in different areas Update: After however many months of playing here, the central net STILL doesn't go much further than a third of the pitch on one side
Fantastic experience: I love this Athletics track I t makes me happy
Fantastic experience: The staff are always friendly! The kids love coming here for the swimming and flumes. Pirate ship is really fun as it has a water cannon which periodically fires into the water and has a slide into the pool aswell.
Hi Craig, thank you for your positive review - it means a lot to us here at Abbeycroft!
Positive experience: We used the pool for floats and fun. Entry is reasonable, and the facilities are generally good. Criticism would be that changing rooms are dated. Need more family sized rooms. Booking is confusing with no clear indication WHICH pool you are booking. Needs to be clearer.
Negative experience: Called the day before to ask if inflatables would be out, told yes for all wet and wild sessions. This was a lie, inflatable hasn't been used for years! Leisure pool only had one water chute working, impossible to swim as water barely over 80cm, big pool was closed for disabled swim, it would reopen in 30 mins, but again, this was untrue as they then prepped it for Lane swimming. A few floats and watering cans in the teaching pool barely constitutes wet and wild. Pool areas are old, tired and slippery, toilets dirty and smelly. In their defense they did give a full refund, but we did waste our morning when we could have visited a better pool in the area! Will not return.
Negative experience: First visit and I booked via the Internet, selecting a slot and upon arrival found there is no need, no apparent limits on numbers and times, probably a hang over from covid measures. Flumes closed. Leisure pool is firmly in the small children bracket, middle pool was packed and is aimed at learners while the big pool was equal chaos, which although suits bigger children pretty much puts the complex into a mess around set of pools, so not necessarily for lane swimming types. Due to the volume of people the showers are insufficient, the outside toilets were closed and it felt a bit of a desperate place, well past its best. But if you're a youngster interested in jumping in, going wild and throwing floats then you're in for a treat !
Positive experience: When my wife suggested a swim in school holiday time I feared the worst, but it was OK! Booking was a bit of a faff. You have to join it like it was a gym or something. Eyewateringly expensive too: £13 for the two of us. It was heaving with kids but they were all well behaved and not a problem. Pools were nice and warm once you were in.
Positive experience: Choice of three pools to swim in , pirates pool is fun for the kids , the training pool is basic but fine for the little ones and the main pool which is a standard pool . Clean , loads of lockers and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Is what it is, family swimming at the weekend . Great for the littller ones. Clean, friendly staff.
Negative experience: Absolutely wasted time and money, from people in entry through whole swimming session. I been told you paying per entry, then was changed to session, we paid over £17 for two adults and toddler, for 50 min session. They sold 50 min session in price of 1 hour. Water was cold, and to be fair I can't wait to leave anyway....
Fantastic experience: Good range of equipment. Friendly, helpful staff
Positive experience: Disappointed that the swimming pool is only 1.4m at the deep end.
Fantastic experience: First time visiting the pool with my little girl and it was great, we booked the pirate pool session and it was a great experience, the pool wasn’t overcrowded and it was extremely clean, staff were also friendly. The pools look very well maintained and the change rooms were really clean. I will be coming back and I would happily recommend this leisure centre. 10/10.
Fantastic experience: Watched my granddaughter in her swimming class. She's a good little swimmer, been going there for a time and now in the top class. Nicely organised and not as much strong chlorine smell as I remember.
Fantastic experience: We moved to Bury St.Edmunds last summer . And First time we used this leisure centre . Great place to play your sport . The four of us played table tennis. The sports hall was nice & clean & the staff were very helpful. Would definitely recommend a visit to play a sport of your choice.
Hi Neil, that's great to hear! We look forward to seeing you around.
Fantastic experience: Lovevthe new equipment in the gym. Would love a bigger sauna without the plastic chairs.
Fantastic experience: We swim here regularly with the kids, lovely pool.
Hi Hannah, thanks for your review! We're glad you're enjoying our pool.
Fantastic experience: Clean, nice facility, friendly staff.. free parking weekends.. Great centre
Thanks David!
Fantastic experience: Nice pool friendly staff
Hi Paul - thanks for your review. We are lucky to have a great team with us!
Fantastic experience: excellent organization and very well trained staff.
Thanks Mircea - hope to see you soon!
Positive experience: Very good
Hi Paul, thank you for your positive review - it means a lot to us here at Abbeycroft :)
Fantastic experience: Amazing customer service.
Positive experience: A good pool in which to swim lengths which is what I like to do. Not too crowded.
Positive experience: Not very practical for the volleyball games. As playing on one side, you do not have enough space to serve, playing on another side, a lot of obstruction on a wall. Otherwise, there is always some space in a car park, changing rooms seems to be ok.
Fantastic experience: Loved it
Fantastic experience: Good public pool, clean floors, good sized changing rooms. Kids Pools not as warm as they used to be! But think that is all pools. Not all pools open every day, so best to check online before going. No need to book in advance. Reasonable prices. Disabled parking and entrance available. No need to pay for parking as you enter your registration number at reception.
Positive experience: Had fun in the 3 pools and using the slides that are only £1 each for unlimited goes. The only star loss is the fact it needs a bit of TLC, the pools look a bit grubby round the outsides and the changing rooms were a little dirty when we came out.
Fantastic experience: Lovely pool. Temperature of water fine, would've liked the temperature of the changing rooms a little warmer cause your freezing when you come out. But the pool itself was great. Free hard drying. Good facilities
Fantastic experience: Great place to teach granddaughter how to swim, not to busy, as booking entry only.
Fantastic experience: 3 large pools to choose from, the small kids play pool can be viewed from the cafe area if you don't fancy swimming yourself. The price isn't awful as it's part of the abbycroft group. Changing room where clean and tidy, plenty of lifeguards about
Negative experience: Disgusting swimming pool!! I have been all over the world and to some really run down places and never in my life have I seen a swimming pool as dirty as this. Where do I start? The flumes great fun if you want some unknown disease, the anti slip corrugated tiles were filled with mould and it stank like a dirty carpark stairwell the smell of ammonia and urine was very strong. There was chewing gum all over the tiles directly next to the swimming pool, algue and mould in places next to the pool, limescale everywhere bins over flowing, staff walking around on filthy shoes, and the changing rooms were no better. This place made me feel sick to my stomach that this place is allowed to be open in this condition! I'd rather hang out in a portaloo on a building site which is probably cleaner. MANAGEMENT!! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!! Theres plenty of miserable looking staff that clearly want something to do so buy them a squeegee and some bleach!!!! Everything that was dirty could have been cleaned quite easily if kept on top of. If you want a fun day out and no illnesses go somewhere else!!!!!!
Negative experience: Our local leisure was fully booked so we travelled to this one as we had promised grandchildren a swim, they are 6 and 8. Booked leisure pool which was overcrowded and almost no opportunity to swim. Flumes were shut, not enough staff we are informed. Not allowed to use other pools although plenty of room. What a poor service for full price, Covid to blame is the excuse of almost every business for their poor service and poor value. We will not use this again, our local one is better by far.
Negative experience: Went to the computer fair held in the leisure centre, it wasn't as great as it was advertised. Charged nearly £5 per adult to get into it, which I wasn't aware of before going there and ended up buy nothing. Waste of my time & money tbh.
Positive experience: Just signed up for the pay-as-you-go card and went for a swim in the main pool. At least 4 pools, but seems only the main can be used for swimming. A good experience, clean and maintained, helpful staff. Dropped 1 star as you need to book a swim still, and its a bit clunky to do that, and there aren't many sessions available.
Fantastic experience: Attended an athletics match. The track is well managed and staff helpful and competent.
Fantastic experience: Took my children here for the Suffolk Community Games event and was very impressed with the facilities available. Only downside to the pool is having to pay extra for the flumes which don't even go into the pool, you have to access them separately in another area and they just come out into an area next to the pool. Staff where helpful and facilities were clean and tidy. Good prices and easily accessible.
Positive experience: Nice little leisure centre
Fantastic experience: Very nice gym, great staff & trainers. Sauna steamroom & pool are all included in monthly membership! Been training here for years still the best for body building & ordinary fitness of all ages
Positive experience: I go with my friends it’s a good place for families the water is not that cold and the slides are cool
Fantastic experience: brilliant for all ages and experience levels a pool for everyone
Negative experience: Just left here. The toddlers pool is to cold and the flumes and large pool were shut. No warning or explanation
Positive experience: Swimming is great for babies and toddlers. There is a pool that's shallow enough for little ones to stand up and another one with a pirate ship, slides, and a big shower. Also a main pool for the bigger ones. Cool water, but not cold. Family changing rooms and baby changing available. Well worth the drive. You have to book online, and the online form is absolutely terrible. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Hi Brett, Thanks for your honest feedback. We're sorry you're struggling with the online booking system. We have an Abbeycroft App, which makes it easier to book swimming sessions. Alternatively, you can turn up and pay in person, although we always recommend you call ahead to make sure there is a session on for you and your family and that we have good availability! We hope to see you back again soon.
Negative experience: Broken my shoulder on water slide was not told to lay down did no see the angle so thought 2nd one was same angle as 1st one I went down nope 45degree drop Attendendent did not say anything no warning signs First aiders did not have good basic knowledge of 1st aid either Also closed main pool with out warning so could not swim propely hench why I used water slide Colchester much better pool Hygiene poor also
Hi paulus121212, Sorry to hear about your unsatisfactory visit. Our centre manager would like to discuss your visit in more detail, would that be okay? Feel free to message us on our socials, send us an email at [email protected], or give us a call on 01284 757473. Thanks
Fantastic experience: Staff were great, Sam Rolfe especially when I had my induction. Only wish there were more comfortable chairs than plastic garden chairs in the cooling down area in the sauna.
Positive experience: The staff are always friendly andhelpful but I am becoming frustrated by the delays in repairing equipment. The leg press machine has been out of action for nearly 2 months. There is only one very large excercise ball and there are only 4 mats which I consider should soon be replaced.
Positive experience: Ok for a swim but the large pool area was quite dirty and could do with a good clean Especially around the barrier between that and the children's pool, probably not being cleaned due to council cut backs.
Positive experience: Swimming pool is in dyer need of refurbishment. Haven't been since I was at school so over 20 years ago but it was basically the same as I remember it from back then, the teaching pool was quite cold for little babies, and really run down looking. The changing rooms also need updating, smell like urine and the floors are not kept clean not a pleasant experience and definitely won't be visiting again. Didn't use any other facilities so can't comment on the rest of the leisure centre. I pay for swimming lessons for my 8 month old baby at Mildenhall hub pool which is fantastic, new facilities and really clean at all times, we only tried Bury today as a friend wanted to go there instead.
Negative experience: The water was cold, slides were not open, the hr went passed so fast and we all wound up Ill. Tested for Covid and thankfully tested negative. This was not the best experience. No photos are allowed, although it's not written in the policy, only a placard placed outside the changing area. We were told to not take photos and densest the one which has been taken. Sorry, no photo, bare in mind it's not written in the policy.
Negative experience: Very rude and and unhelpful staff!! Thank you for ruining my little boys birthday!!!
Fantastic experience: Very helpful staff. I forgot my trunks and had to travel 1 hour round trip to collect them. The kind lady on reception moved our booking slot to the next one. Thank you.
Negative experience: Very disappointed with the standard of hygiene at the pool today. The changing rooms floor were dirty and smelt of urine. The leisure pool was generally dirty and to top it off the was a toenail sat on the side of the pool which the lifeguard seemed completely unbothered about. Such a shame as this used to be a really nice place to visit.
Negative experience: I went in the changing rooms are dirty and life guards where very rude I called the day before and to see if the slider where open the lady who answers said it was then they said they weren’t the day after. Won’t be comming here again
Fantastic experience: Excellent venue and wonderfully helpful staff especially the enthusiastic reception #marvellous thanks!
Fantastic experience: Family friendly leisure centre. We visited the leisure pool and loved it. It's a shame the flumes we're unavailable, but we made the most of it
Positive experience: Indifferent staff in general, a few standouts; Facilities variable to poor and degrading, mens toilets 1/2 hand driers function, 2/3 dispensers had soap, urinals out of action for months now.
Negative experience: Dreadful booking service online as we postponed due to illness and rebooked moving the booking forward through the booking service. When we arrived with our 3yr old there was no booking for us. A upset grandson and grand parents. No email confirmation given. Dreadful service. No a happy chappie.
Fantastic experience: Son plays football here, great facilities, well lit, grounds well kept.
Fantastic experience: He is really good
Negative experience: It was my son's 14th birthday and I took him, and three 13 year old friends to the pool for a treat. I paid for Wet and Wild which includes the slides. I had been before and used all 3 pools. I phoned before I pre booked the session and was told the slides would be open and to book Wet and Wild (which cost more than usual swim). When we got there the slides were closed, and only the leisure pool, suitable for very young children, was open. So I spent £22 for 4 teenagers to splash in shallow water. Nobody told us that everything was closed, even when we arrived. The boys did not find out until they were in the pool. Very disappointing on my son's birthday
Positive experience: The gym is not very big and there could be more equipment, but overall quite good.
Negative experience: Won't be back. Took my 8 week old for her first time along with my partner and 3 year old. Went specifically for the teaching pool as had been a number of years ago and was lovely and warm, not quite so now - the pool was definitely a bit chilly! But not unbearable of course! The pool however was absolutely filthy! The pool floor had all bits you could feel on your feet all by the steps. There were lots of other disgusting bits floating round the pool, there were 4 floats in the pool which I can only describe as being half eaten. We didn't stay in long, but went back to the changing area and used one of the group change changing rooms which was also filthy, the baby change unit (pull down) was honestly disgusting, it was covered in dirt and crumbs. I ended up changing my 8 week old on my lap as she would have probably caught something off of that! Also lastly my almost 4 year old (confident in water) was happily walking round the pool not a problem however when my partner was sitting in the water he put our son on his shoulders and was holding his hands this was all of a sudden a problem with the lifeguard so he is okay to be completely on his own walking in water but not allowed on my partners shoulders with his legs in the water. My partner had his shoulders literally in the water and was obviously not standing up or anything! Will not be coming back purely for how filthy the place was - would have thought with Covid especially the place would have been somewhat cleaner! And paid over £14 for the privilege
Negative experience: Very tired and old these days, not a very nice pool to go to. Really needs replacing with a new leisure centre
Fantastic experience: Take my baby swimming and its perfect. The smaller pool is heated slightly warmer for the little ones, it has steps into the pool so it's easy to get in and out. Large baby changing rooms available. Nice big lockers and a buggy parking area.
Positive experience: Brilliant leisure centre Pirate pool is good very clean the water is warm and is is never busy which is good. The pirate pool includes 2 flumes, one of which is very fast and one is normal. Highly recommend.
Positive experience: Swimming pool Very tired ansdated
Positive experience: Clean, efficient and friendly
Positive experience: Still could do with a good clean, no restrictions on the outside footwear being worn throughout the swimming complex and consequently filthy soiled flooring in the changing rooms that we all have to walk on barefooted including the little ones. The main problem is that it is FREEZING !!! The air temperature is so cold, I try this place everynow and again for taking the children/grandchildren leisure swim (I lane swim here regularly) and always the same, dirty and cold, which is so not customer service focused. Me and my little granddaughter were freezing using the leisure swim today. No wonder this is underused and Thetford& Sudbury swimming pool complexes are busy. Shame, but this has always been the case over many years, freezing cold air temperature in the leisure swimming.
Thank you for your feedback regarding air temperature in our Leisure Pool area. Our air temperatures are governed by pool water temperatures. Unfortunately, this means we cannot warm the air in the Leisure Pool area. Our apologies. In regard to shoes in the changing village we will make sure staff are reminding customers that no outdoor footwear is to be worn in this area. We have signage up however we will ensure customers are reminded of this.
Positive experience: Not too busy today
Negative experience: Went for the wet n wild which was ok as my son wanted to use the slides. but they closed the main pool, so you couldn’t swim which I thought was odd and disappointing.
Positive experience: Boy does swimming lessons, good teachers!
Positive experience: Great time, the pirate ship adventure pool for our children was fun and we felt very safe with the limited people allowed in. Changing rooms were great and clean and the showers are operational
Fantastic experience: Very nice place. Nice stuff, easy to book activities, big enough changing room with lots of separate locker rooms.
Positive experience: Great well run business very clean and safe
Fantastic experience: Good for swimming, friendly staff.
Positive experience: Good leisure centre with swimming lessons, gym and classes. Tasty Paddy & Scott's coffee outside of Covid times.
Thanks for your kind and positive review Peter.
Fantastic experience: Training at the running track with St Edmund Pacers. Very well organised for social distancing. I didn't go into the leisure centre.
Fantastic experience: 4 families too the swimming teaching pool for 1hour everyone is able to keep well away
Fantastic experience: Great facilities with a wide range of activities, plus all well maintained by the professional team.
Hi Paul, thank you for your positive review - it means a lot to us here at Abbeycroft! :)
Positive experience: Great to get back to my regular swim after 5 months. The process to register online & locate the correct booking process seems over-complicated (took a while to realise going through' swimming lessons' & not 'swimming sessions' was needed) . Response to online enquiries since indoor pool reopening was announced took several weeks...but staff on 1st Thursday back were brilliant - social distancing 'champions 'at reception ; clear advice on how the sessions worked - 3 lanes - slow; med & fast; clockwise rotation in wide lanes; no overtaking; limited numbers in the pool but changing rooms & lockers still available (there was some doubt about this ) but no showers. Entry via barcode scan at the turnstile of member cards. The scanner is a bit slow so watch that 2m gap when queuing that you don't bunch-up people. The 'champion' will remind you! We're back - outstanding, Abbeycroft Leisure team at BSE!
Positive experience: Loved the pool found on arrival the welcoming could have been better for first visit... Where's your parking ticket? Second took ticket told don't do them now.. No help offered when I explained its our first visit just left to find way in.. Maybe a kind word let me explain where to go etc... great pools lots of fun with the grandkids. Could do with an update now.
Fantastic experience: Because of Track Play and Pirate ship pool
Fantastic experience: Brilliant pools for all ages. Three in fact! A toddler pool with fast and slow flumes, a middle pool with inflatables, and a third pool for swimming for adults and children. Excellent entry prices. Cafe looks straight onto the toddler pool and serves great sandwiches and cake!
