Bannatyne Health Club

Fantastic experience: Lovely gym, the staff are amazing and so friendly! Always saying hello and smiling whatever the time! Plenty of space, and classes to choose from. A mix of all ages which is the reason why I like this gym so much, it’s open to everyone of all different levels of fitness! I like how they keep the yoga studio and spin room open if you fancy doing your own thing outside of class times.

Positive experience: Basic gym and spa for the price, it's a shame the spa area is being left to deteriorate, the wood in the sauna is rotted, the steam room and the jacuzzi has several tiles missing which is quite dangerous. The gym is also quite small and heavily focused on cardio and not much equipment for weight lifting. It's a shame as the gym could be really good if it was given the right attention. Staff are pleasant here though.

Fantastic experience: Great gym and facilities. Knocks spots off Cardiff. I am a member at Cardiff, but choose to travel to Newport. Gym, sauna and steam room are bigger and cleaner than Cardiff.

Negative experience: Newport facility is mediocre , massively overpriced for what you can get for £30 at the everlast gyms, pool isn't a full 25m (only 20m) not motorcycle friendly at all, from the get go I did not receive a warm welcome at all and when I tried to book the so called 1 on 1 sessions that are supposed to be included in the package they were never available....don't waste your money on this place...there are better gyms suchas the JD gym that has just had a massive refurbishment...the steam room, sauna and pool there are incredible since the overhaul

Negative experience: Tried to freeze my membership, website showed free however it appeared that that club is a pay freeze. I asked for confirmation, staff were short and abrupt. I then decided to cancel my membership. Very short sighted as my wife too wanted to join. Missed the beginning of the month by 2 days still wanted that month plus a month notice. Ended in £75 to close matter. Their short sightness cost them £1200 for the sake of not freezing my membership for free for a few month. At least they got £75

Negative experience: Do not join this gym. They con you into signing up and, if they’ve shown you around, there is no cooling off period even if you’ve never been on the equipment or used the gym at all.

Fantastic experience: Staff are super kind and will go out of their way to welcome you which is not something you see often at gyms. I’m currently having PT sessions with Aaliyah. I’m her first pregnant PT client and she’s really motivated and inspired to learn more about exercise and pregnancy. Seeing how into it she is makes me stay really motivated and I’m really enjoying our sessions and the stretches and exercises she’s been doing with me. I’m really glad that I enquired about these sessions and I feel fully supported by the club and Aaliyah! Thank you ☺️

Negative experience: The place is a joke... ask for a manger to call you, he doesn't bother and just hides from you. GO into bannatynes and ask for the manger they end up giving you a pack of lies making out he's not there. Bannatynes is very unprofessional, I would strongly advise to avoid this place. Also they can't change a direct debit expect you to miss 2 weeks of your membership because you get paid on the 19th and there DD is the 1st and can not be changed. Avoid this place. Plenty of better gym about

Positive experience: UNCLEAN! The staff in Newport are great and always accommodating. They are always very welcoming. I am guessing that through no fault of the staffs, fundings are low. This would explain lack of cleaners. I have major issues with the cleanliness of the changing rooms. They are not cleaned regularly enough or properly. Floor is always dirty and shower cubicles are hardly cleaned. Cleaning once or twice a day is not enough for a busy changing room. If things don't improve we will be leaving when my partners membership ends.

Negative experience: My husband brought me the ‘gift of wellness’ for Christmas last year. As we live in Newport I decided to redeem it at their branch. I activated it on Sunday 29th October (at the same time as my husband purchasing a day pass). There was a long wait for the staff to activate my monthly pass so they let me in with the band on this occasion as they were unsure of what the ‘gift of wellness’ was despite having them for sale by reception? At the time I was told I would be emailed my membership number the next day so I would be able to use it to book online gym classes, use the pool, etc, however, the email confirmation never arrived. We then attended together again on Saturday 11th November and exactly the same thing happened. They had my husband’s details on the system but did not have any record of mine, so once again I had to wait and it was only by luck that the girl who dealt with me on the previous occasion was there otherwise I wouldn't have been allowed in. Once again, I did not receive an email confirmation so I was unable to use the facilities and classes. Basically, my husband brought this gift for £89 but it has been a complete waste of money as I have not been able to use any of the classes (which I was looking forward too) and on both occasions they have no record of me on the system despite my husband being bombarded with emails which we both found very frustrating. I sent an email to the manager at the Newport branch on 25th November asking if he could contact me asap. As a week has passed without them even having the decency to acknowledge my email I feel I need to leave this review. It is such a shame as the pool, sauna and steam room were fantastic and I’ve no doubt once you get a regular membership it is worth the money but feel the ‘gift of wellness’ is a complete waste of money and it has left us disappointed in Banatyne's as an organisation and my husband upset as it was a gift that I was unable to use to it’s full potential.

Pool was very dirty you can easily see a lot of green in the sides . Not happy at all and when i told them those things they didn’t take responsibility . They said they can’t manage

Negative experience: Update on the updated review: Same staff member that said he will sue the gym and the other members decided by himself to close the gym about 50 minutes earlier on a Saturday. I've been told that they close the barriers at their own discretion (other staff members told me it's 30 minutes before closing time which seems reasonable). Anyways... after taking my time and using fuel to travel to the gym I am being told I can't go in. I arrived at 7 13~ PM on a Saturday. I'm cancelling my membership and won't be joining again. There's a 12 months contract to join and I would really think hard if I were to join, read the other comments. It's a lot of money for potentially a really bad experience. Please see the original below Updated review: Previously I've said that the gym is starting to look more like pure-gym and less like a proper "health club". Have recently noticed the gym is in a better condition. Staff seems to be putting back weights and equipment being left in random places by members which is not entierly fair for the staff as I'm sure they have better things to do, but the gym overall seems to be in a better condition now. Staff is always friendly and have not encountered any of the staff that previously threatened to sue the members if they slip on the water that we drip after getting out of the pool. Would I recommend this gym now? Maybe, yes.

Negative experience: Being purpose built, I expected this club to be bigger and better than our local club in Cardiff. The pool area is small, lack of beds means there's nowhere for people to sit and the cleaning staff constantly spraying the hosepipe makes it very difficult to relax. Sauna and steam room are actually a good size so that's a positive. The area is a bit rough and it shows, felt rather uncomfortable the whole time. The Cardiff club is in a much nicer area and you really notice it. For a "premium" health club, you expect it to be in a nicer area attracting a nicer crowd. We know a member who lives in Newport but travels to the Cardiff club instead because the members are more friendly... overall, not great

Negative experience: Mediocre gym and facilities that rarely work to standard. Also when I cancelled my membership on 2/2/23 they then charged me the whole month of March.

Negative experience: Some staff are very friendly especially the cleaning ladies.Other staff need more training including the manager.They would have to take seriously when clients are complaining about like,the sauna is cold or the steam room or the water in the swimming pool.Raising the price is loosing costumers is simply is. I’m more than happy to leaving after a year!

Negative experience: Been a member of the gym for 3 months as I signed up for the 3 month membership. Haven’t been for the past 2 due to other commitments. I emailed to cancel my membership with immediate effect and was told I need to give a months notice to cancel even though I only signed up for the 3 month membership which I’ve paid for. They seemed more interested in a final payment of £60 rather than the fact that I don’t use the gym. Ruth was very rude via email and I won’t be signing up with them again as they trick people into staying for another month even though it’s not needed or wanted.

Fantastic experience: Lovely place nice pool. But cleaning stuff make too much noise. They should clean after closed. They start closing cleaning two hour before and that time it's really hard to do workout . They should change this system.

Positive experience: I love coming here have been a member for several years, you only get out what you put in at any gym, however I feel the staff are very lacking in certain aspects and walk around with blinkers on, also they don't follow up on issues raised by members. Hence the reason for 3 stars.

Fantastic experience: Love the gym, pool, spa, classes. Staff are great and facilities are run well and cleaned well. All the members are super friendly too. No worries about meat head gym goers making you feel like you shouldn't be there :)

Negative experience: Been swimming this afternoon and they have dropped the temperature of the water to 25 degrees, it us usually 29 it was freezing and they said that it will 25 from now on , I suffer with arthritis and always enjoyed the warmth for my joints , will not be renewing my membership ,

Negative experience: Never join with this gym I have had so much trouble I joined in 8th july 2022 and due to health reasons I had to cancel on 20th july. I informed bannatyne to cancel my membership through gym pass and they decided to take a payment out the day I joined then on the 28th 20 days later from the first payment and then excepted my request to be cancelled and on 30 August still was taking payments out my account with out even having a membership in place. Now I'm left with payments being taking from my account and bannatyne or gym pass keep fobing me off to 1 another

Positive experience: The whole place is clean, the staff are excellent and friendly, I can't fault them. The gym itself while small is adequate. If you're wondering they have two squat racks and then one smith machine and then one bench setup for bench press, there's also three or four benches for dumbbell work. They have two cable machines and then a whole host of machines for specific body parts and tonnes of bikes, stairs machine etc and cardio. They also have a plated leg press and overhead press machine. There is a genuine sense of community there, people know each-other, say hello, have a chat etc. The changing rooms are clean and simple to navigate, you don't need to bring your own padlock as your membership band locks your locker for you. The swimming pool is nice, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna while small do the job! It's a nice place to go and chill. The reasons I'm leaving are: . Squat racks, two isn't enough as they're perpetually busy compared to the surrounding machines (that said, the target clientele of bannatynes is the older generations so a load of squat racks and stuff isn't gonna do it for them). And because the gym is small people are passing by closely behind you as you're trying to do your thing. . Price - it's expensive! If you're in for the pool, sauna, jacuzzi, spin and coffee side of things, you'll get your money's worth no doubt and it's worth the price. If you're younger or just there to do squats and deadlifts etc. or more into the lifting side of things you're not going to get your money's worth. I rate four stars for that reason, I can't be angry that it's not the lifting / squat rack filled gym it turns out I need because I'm clearly not their target audience. For who they target, they do an amazing job and it's good to see a place where people are friendly, chatty and all there to be healthy and relax.

Positive experience: Reasonably content with the gym & facilities, albeit small and sometimes too busy for the price. My main quarell is with the temperature of the steamroom & especially the hot tub. If you're going to list the temperatures upon entry, ensure they are accurate. I understand energy bills have increased however, I have only been twice where the hot tub, is actually hot! £46/month and the facilities are not as advertised... Also the PTs are young and impersonable. I am not ageist, but if you are going to have PTs at a 'reputable' gym, make them approachable, rather than having ones walking around with their chests pumped out staring at themselves in the mirror. Negative experience: First of all equipment good.. 4 star. Staff friendly 4:star. I made a simple cc payment on 5 th August to clear my 5 month outstanding balance. Simple enough I thought. Did this over the phone. However,for nearly 3 months approx I had to go to the desk every time to ask why it would not let me in. I was more than patient with the reply"this will be sorted next time'. It came to the point where I had to show my credit card statement showing I had made the payment. This was continuous for the time stated above. I came in in early Jan and again it happened. I had had enough. I spoke to a gentlemen and I stated this must be a joke. I was being fed absolute garbage and lies about it being sorted. After again proving I had made a payment,he said he would sort it on Monday but as a result could only let me in today(Friday)but not the weekend as I was not a member. Pathetic. I informed him that I was a member as I paid it off in August. Unbelievable. However to my shock,they had sorted it over my work out and told me on my exit. 1 apology received Just had phonecall to rejoin... Ummmm. I thought long and hard but have joined somewhere else.

Fantastic experience: man, worth every penny. the gym is essentially brand new and everything is in place. the pool is perfectly heated and the sauna is absolutely lovely. I was a bit wary of paying double most gyms, but it provides so much more than double what they do.

Negative experience: I’ve emailed and called 4+ times over several months and had no reply. They were refusing entry to mask exempt people and are now refusing to comment on it or respond to me

Negative experience: Edited my review after having to cancel because I've moved over 10 miles away to look after a terminal family member. I paid over £53.00 to Bannetyne health club, used it twice and had it for only 13 days. They're refusing to let me walk away, demanding that I continue paying, trying to charge me a £20 admin fee and another 30 days too. Not to mention half the facilities are out of use so I can't even use any of it!! They lack sympathy, understanding and are driven by absolute greed. I'll be adding this review to every single site I can and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Shame on you. If you're seeing this DO NOT USE THIS HEALTH CLUB!!! AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Positive experience: I was supprised when i visited Cardiff Bannatyne club today how much better the Newport gym is! More weight machines in Newport and a much better lay out. Also the Cardiff gym area and changing room needs an update felt old. The staff at the Newport gym are friendly and the people who train there are generally friendly the place is always clean highly recommended.

Negative experience: Been a member of this health club, never felt welcomed. Now I get a phone from ............ who was really rude and put the phone down on me, I think this kind of attitude is not acceptable and I am waiting for apology.

Negative experience: agaim they do the class in the gym. i speak with menager they have another 2 rooms to do class but still block half gym at 6 when every one here after work. I can't wait wheb my contract finish. also staff is not friendly they don't help juat tshirt personal trainer. they told me many times to tak equipment back even i don't fihish so for what i pay money,? to go there and clean a gym ?? I hate this place now!!

Negative experience: Steam room and jaccuzi are usually cold so unable to enjoy the facilities. Staff are friendly but at times give the wrong information. Stung a £132 charge for the staff telling me is was OK to cancel my direct debits as my 12 months was over and later recieved an email with the bill..

Fantastic experience: Been a member for several years, good equipment and well ran classes. A bit expensive but there is a lot available.

Negative experience: Turned up to use the pool, steam room etc only to find they don't have towels, not even to hire! Only option is to buy a towel for aboit as much as a day pass! I was bewildered.

Positive experience: Recently had major refurb to all plumbing to pool, poolside showers and shower block. Changing room, cloakroom etc now very modern. At a price though all memberships have been increased. Starbucks? coffee now in place - BRING BACK the old coffee machine. This coffee is awful, at least 2 dozen of the friends I meet in the mornings now all meet for coffee at Blaina Wharf the Marsdens pub down the road. This often leads to lunch therefore Bannatynes missing out on business twofold.

Fantastic experience: My best gym experience to date, and I've been to quite a few gyms in the country. The facilities were well looked after because it was immaculate. The staff are friendly and reasonable prices, well worth the money. The changing rooms and the showers were the best I've seen. I'm a fussy guy when it comes to cleanliness, this gym is spotless. I could not see anything negative about this place. I wish my local gym was this good.

Positive experience: Hi I've been there since the day it open, staff are great. It has everything a good gym should have, and a even better health suite. There are cheaper gyms, but not better ones. And right next to where I live.
