Fantastic experience: First visit this morning. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Enjoyed my swim and steam room. £6 day pass for the centre is a reasonable price as well. Looking forward to returning this week.

Negative experience: The sauna has been broken for the whole of 2024 and there is no sign or promise of a fix date. The steam room breaks every month or two and can take a week or two to fix. It's not good enough and seems like a deliberate policy at this point to save money on energy costs yet there is no discount on membership.

Negative experience: so i came here with a friend who booked the badminton court from 2 to 4pm today. when we came to the court at 2pm, the court was not prepared, we had to come back to the front desk and the lady told us she just sent the team to set up the court. we started to play around 2:10pm. at 3:50, the staff came in to take off the net because they needed to prepare the court for the next hour's game. so of course i was confused as we didn't get the court prepared 10 minutes for us ( i didn't know it was 50 mins per session for badminton, as it was my friend who booked it, and as someone who went to other courts play badminton, i naturally thought it was one hour per session.) so i asked the staff regarding the 10 mins preparation time, and the male staff explained that the for badminton, it was 50 mins per session, and they actually gave us extra 10 mins. the explanation should be fine here, but then he continued with a very unnecessary and rude remark: IF YOU WANNA PLAY THAT GAME, WE CAN PLAY IT TOO i mean what??? is that what UofG is doing now? that was really unnecessary and mean and i can't help but thinking if he would say the same thing to people in a different skin color.

Negative experience: The issue with the gym is every little thing that needs to be repaired has to go through some long winded University system or process - even the non-slip tape on a single step will take MONTHS to repair - so a single step is cordoned off for 4 months to fix the non-slip strip when anyone with glue could fix it in 2 minutes - then when something is repaired - it is done poorly or is mismanaged - just very incompetent - hence the other year waiting close to a year for them to fix the flooring in the weight level - only to install new racks too close to the columns to add and remove weights - incompetence is par for the course at every step

Negative experience: The calendar of classes in the swimming pool is always wrong. Sometimes there is no classes. They ask you to leave because there is a “club”. But the phone app shows all lanes open. So many times. Then the stuff just said nothing without any explanation. And the steam room is broken for three months. If you can’t provide this service, can you please delete this steam room and decrease the prices? Each year increase the prices, each year decrease the service. I was huge fan of this sports center. Now, please don’t come to this membership. The gym also have a space for club, you can’t use that space. All of us pay for the membership. We can not use and be defrauded. So disgusting.

Negative experience: July 2024: The sauna has been closed for two months now. I’ve asked at the reception desk, called, and emailed—no one knows when it will be repaired. I’m going to cancel my membership and find a gym that has a working sauna. This is ridiculous. Update Oct 2024: Sauna is still not fixed. UofG gym reception said it was a major repair. It took less time to build the actually building than it's taken to repair the sauna!

Negative experience: It is frustrating that I feel the need to write about this, but I also feel it is very important. Yesterday, I went to Glasgow uni gym at Stevie. The gym was amazing. Seriously, great stuff. I Heard their was a Finnish sauna aswell which excited me very much as I am from Finland, however to my disappointment, I found that no water was allowed to be thrown at the sauna (which is what it is made for), I asked the front desk, why this was the case, they clearly did not understand how a sauna works, stating that "it is electric" (So are millions of saunas that you'll find in Finland..). I went on to leave a comment on their Instagram post, which specifically forbade water being thrown on the rocks. My comment, along with a few others, got deleted. Now I was (clearly mistakenly) under the impression that the University of Glasgow was a progressive institution. How mistaken I was. The very bedrock of Democracy (freedom of speech) is threatened, as a fair comment just stating the facts and questioning the situation was deleted. This annoyed me. So hear I am writing a review that will probably get deleted, not to worry. In that case, I will definitely spread this message around and let people know of this appalling behaviour. I visited Glasgow for the open day at its university. I will definitely not apply here, I am quite shocked in fact. Is this how all Scottish universities treat cultural heritage protected by UNESCO ? What if a restaurant deleted critical reviews. If you wish to ban water from a sauna, stop calling it a sauna.

Ben Gill 1 year ago

Negative experience: Poor management of equipment, lack of machines, and for some reason they allow groups to book out the sauna even though we all pay for it.

Fantastic experience: Never used this sport complex before as mainly used the Garscube sports complex as it is much closer to me. We booked a badminton court yesterday and was quite lost to find our court. Barry one of the staff helped us to find the right location. Barry was really helpful.

Negative experience: Opening hours are much shorter compared to a year ago. The strike this term has seriously affected us paying members. The whole sport centre is in a very ridiculous state of management. If it wasn't for the fact that I live nearby, I wouldn't have chosen it otherwise. Very much not recommended.

Fantastic experience: It's calm innit

Negative experience: Poor management - equipment was moved around almost daily, and part of the strength area was closed for almost a year for some reason, but now is accessible. Overcrowding - If you are a bodybuilding enthusiast, you may have to wait for more than ten minutes for a strength machine due to the limited number of them. Strict time limits and frequent strikes, if you have better options, don't come here.

Sofía Vilas Muñiz 1 year ago

Negative experience: Be very careful if you lose any item in the Stevenson Bulding because the staff will not help you at all. I lost my Airpods case, and this afternoon was the third time that I tried to get them back. This time I took my Airpods and my charger with me because when I first went there without them they would not give me my case. So apparently they took the item to another place before the time that they told me and they were not even capable to tell me where the lost property univeristy office is! An awful experience and I do not even know if I will be able to get my Airpods case back!

Negative experience: THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU JOIN IN. The gym at UoG didn't bring me a good experience during a year, today marks my last visit, and I would never come back again. I really can't recommend a gym with such a lack of flexibilities, especially on weekends when it closes at 5pm. And the powerlifting space is so small and crowded. Almost half of this area has been shut down due to maintenance working for half a year, which makes you can't even find a bench during peak hours. Those equipments are outdated and they are not suitable enough to cater for the needs of 10000+ students There are many other options in Westend that you might find more satisfactory. If you scroll through recent comments you'll find more evidence. Go there if you want to waste your time for waiting equipments instead of sweating.

Alexander Stewart 1 year ago

Negative experience: Closed half the time due to strike action, Closing time at weekends at 5 is ridiculous, 1/5 of the gym unavailable

Henry Loughlin 1 year ago

Negative experience: Constantly striking, frustratingly they only informed people of plans to strikes after the majority of students would've purchased a membership. Furthermore the free weights section still has a large part of the floor fenced off causing the remaining area to be crammed. This is only made more farcical by the increased price of membership.

Riya Bisht 1 year ago

Negative experience: The only reason I use this gym is convenience and price, since I'm a student. However, if cardio isn't the only thing you're interested in, you're not going to get much out of this gym. While the first floor has been revamped with brand new cardio machines (which never seem to be full - not even 50% in use), the lower power play/weightlifting level is incredibly cramped and underkept. The gym also has the fewest isolation machines I have ever seen in any gym - less than a handful for upper and lower body. Like many others have pointed out, a huge portion of the weightlifting area has been closed off for over a year, with seemingly no plans to fix the situation which isn't only an inconvenience but also a security threat. Peak hours are therefore extremely busy - it's difficult to walk past corridors; there's little to no benches, squat racks or even empty space to work out due to how crowded it gets. Bathrooms also haven't been re-done in years, it seems. There's always issues with the shower, and hygiene isn't the best. Lately the gym has also been closed for several days at a time due to strikes, so we can't even use the service we have paid for. I feel bad for the staff, since some people are so lovely, but upper management seems to not care about the state of the gym at all. It's funny how membership prices have gone up but no relevant improvements have been made. If anything, more and more memberships are being sold so it seems things will only continue to go downhill from here. If I could afford it, I would choose another gym.

Finn McInroy 1 year ago

Negative experience: Massive part of the gym has been closed off for repairs for well over 6 months. No signs of them starting to repair it either. Loads of strikes because they don't pay their workers enough. Giving them 2 stars because as a student you get it quite cheap.

Daryl Philip 2 years ago

Negative experience: Close due to strike action, but don't actually tell any members, no email, hence hundreds of people turning up over the course of the day to discover the building is closed with just a vague sign on the door that does not actually state the building is closed on this date. Poor treatment of community members and students.

Nikki S 2 years ago

Negative experience: This is not the gym for people who train using resistance machines and who lift. There are literally like 5 resistance machines and they’re taken up most of the time because of how busy it is, same for the racks in the powerlift room. genuinely so disappointed at how poor the equipment variety is.

Borbála Lőrincz 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: The pool is very clean and has great atmosphere and nice water to swim in.

Emma O 2 years ago

Negative experience: A portion of the weights area has been closed off for nearly a year and nothing is being done to fix this. The converted weight area is tiny, always cramped and a health and safety issue. Its just a miracle that people do not drop weights on each other. The issue is worsened by the fact that the entire gym floor is always littered with bags and the gym staff walk around doing nothing about this. The health and safety executive need to visit this gym ASAP before something disastrous happens! Its unbelieveable that UOG cannot afford to maintain its sports facilities despite the crazy amount of fees being paid by students! The entire management of the facility needs sacked as they all seem to be incompentent and not uptodate with whats happening in the health and fitness industry.

Fantastic experience: Nice University gym with multiple floors serving cardio + light weight training, Olympic + power lifting, small separate areas for stretching/mobility/yoga, a 25m pool, and locker rooms.

John Corson 2 years ago

Positive experience: lots of racks and cheap for students but lacking machines. Only one joint leg extension curl machine and no chest fly, calf machine, or preacher curl. Also a huge area has been fenced off for no reason making the dumbbell section quite cramped.

Kyle Branchesi 2 years ago

Negative experience: A large portion of the power play floor has been closed for near half a year, with no information posted for members. It’s due to an uneven floor, which has been an issue for years with no action by management to fix and now that it has gotten so severe it has been closed and a very slow moving long process is apparently happening to create a timeline and secure funding to fix it but this shouldn’t have gotten this bad, just utter incompetence from management over years, and now the busiest gym in Glasgow provides inadequate facilities for members

Hyun Suk Lee 2 years ago

Negative experience: Lack of machine’s variety.

Mikey Astin 2 years ago

Negative experience: It’s getting worse and worse - completely inadequate hours, the place always trashed, especially the weight floor, always out of paper roll and spray to clean equipment even though it seems there is always a dozen staff standing and chatting. They need to open earlier in the morning, they open at 6:30 and by 6:32 the entire weight floor is filled with people waiting to use equipment. The management is really bad and seems everything gets worse each week not better. For whatever reason a large portion of the weight floor is shut off with no work seemingly to take place and it’s been like this for over a month with no information for members - I just don’t get how there is no common sense to understand they have sold way too many memberships for the space and have atrocious hours, with a place that always looks like a tornado rolled through and yet so many staff that don’t seem to do anything.

Krzysztof Milewski 2 years ago

Negative experience: Swimming pool went completely downhill. So, so overcrowded, you need to watch constantly so you don't get accidentally hit in the water. Doesn't matter if someone swims very fast in the slow lane without paying attention to anyone else - the staff can't be bothered.

ell brad 2 years ago

Negative experience: Decent-ish facilities if you can get on anything. This place is constantly busy and your time spent there is basically doubled and spent waiting around for equipment to become free. A baffling lack of weight training machines and an absurd amount of cross trainers and treadmills. I have been there at times and seen people literally doing floor work in a tiny space between a wall and a bike. I’m no healthy and safety expert by any means but at times it definitely verges on being unsafe. People are often doing their workouts in the middle of areas that would usually be used to navigate in and out of the gym floor (Hope there’s never a fire in here). I’ve nearly taken a dumbbell to the head on more than one occasion There seems to be no gym staff presence on the floors to maintain any health and safety standards at times like this. The opening times are a joke. Basically throwing away your money for 2 weeks in December as they take absolute liberties with their festive “opening” times. Was shut completely or shut early more than it was actually open. Shutting at back of 5 on Saturdays and Sundays only adds to the overcrowding throughout the week with nobody being able to get in on weekend evenings. This is a seriously uncomfortable gym to be in at times with how busy it gets. Think carefully before joining and locking yourself into a 1 year membership.

Lauren 2 years ago

Negative experience: Real lack of equipment for the amount of people who use it. It's rare that you can get a bench or use any of the free weights. Not many weights machines, only two pull-downs and a few chest presses and rows. It seems to be constantly busy unless you go first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Also very run down. For the amount you pay, it's not worth the money at all. Whole thing needs torn down and rebuilt, with more space for equipment. If you compare this gym to other university gyms like GCU and Strathclyde, it's pretty embarrassing. You'd think for a Russell Group university, it would be state of the art, but it's the opposite. Would not recommend.

Matt 2 years ago

Negative experience: I really liked the facilities - probably the best equipped gym in Glasgow. However, it’s very squat rack and cardio heavy, with just a handful of benches that are always taken or dragged away into squat racks due to overal lack of weightlifting equipment. The staff are great and super helpful too! Unfortunately, it’s been HYPER busy since September which kills the enjoyment of the workouts for me. Most of the time, there’s a fair wait to get a rack or a bench, even at 7 in the morning! I gave it a fair go, across the whole week and at different times.

Fantastic experience: Always very friendly staff at Reception and at poolside. Great facilities.

Aurélien Nioche 3 years ago

Negative experience: Very nice staff and good atmosphere (5 stars for this) but clear maintenance issues, as a substantial part of the weight lifting area is unusable since more than one year now, as mentioned in other reviews. Also, there is not enough equipment for the number of users in the weight lifting area, which greatly increases the risk of an accident due to overcrowding. More anecdotal but still annoying, the direction increased the cost for booking a squash court of 50% in one year without any form of justification (was 2 pounds, now is 3).

Mahmoud Wagih 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym facilities, 16+ lifting platforms/racks which can take more than one user if busy, but there are limited weight machines and free weights/dumbbells area. The equipment is mostly brand new. Longer hours would've been great, the weekend hours are particularly short, but it's usually not too busy outside peak hours. Remember to bring a padlock if using the changing lockers!
