Newham Leisure Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Nice. I wonder they had a creche and more classes for kids, especially gymnastics
Fantastic experience: Good
Negative experience: Sadly Newham Leisure center discriminates against disabled people. I have asked for my disabled sister to join as a member and for me to assist her access as a carer, I have been advised I need to join as a member even though I’m a member of Nuffield and they already provide this access. Big shame disabled people are discouraged from joining unless an additional carer membership is bought that is not needed.
Fantastic experience: Every week I go there to play badminton . There are many courts available for playing.
Positive experience: Nice place to swim
Fantastic experience: The place is neat and spacious to work out.
Fantastic experience:
Positive experience: The leisure centre is a bit tired could do with a refurbishment but got good facilities Sports-hall, 3G Football pictures run track outside and indoor, Gym and swimming pool staff are very helpful
Negative experience: 2 out of 5 weekday evenings restrict the entire upstairs area to women-only, which includes most of the weight machines and studios. This creates significant inconvenience for other members during peak hours. Strangely, during these women-only hours, some women still choose to use the downstairs area, which is perfectly fine, but it leaves the upstairs area completely underutilized. Some members have suggested reviewing this policy over the years, but it seems no changes have been made
Fantastic experience: funtastic place for kids n adults for workout, playing or swimming
Negative experience: Poor service Customer service is not good No one give to right answer There is 4 staff ther all just taking Not given answer
Positive experience: Something for everyone of all abilities.
Fantastic experience: Great gym and swimming. Staff were very helpful for my first time there
Fantastic experience: Easy to get to, and free parking. Also pleasant staff upon arrival.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic venue for football swimming and many more activities you should visit for yourself to see
Fantastic experience: Always helpful at the front desk, nice swimming pool, can be busy in the middle of the day with school lessons they only have one lane open.
Positive experience: Ideal off the fence 7 aside footy
Fantastic experience: Nice place, decent 3G pitches, good clean gym. Staff are friendly, manager has been there for a while always has time for us.
Positive experience: Newham leisure centre is a great place to do any sports activities with friends and family. I have recently started coming here to do swimming and it has a lot more facilities than East Ham leisure centre does, but the one thing that you guys should keep an eye on are the hairdryers in the men’s changing rooms, they don’t always work, they are heavily unreliable and when they do work they only work for a short amount of time before turning off, and my hair isn’t even fully dry, if you just fix the hairdryers then this place will be great.
Fantastic experience: Finally somewhere with easy parking!
Positive experience: Good facilities, friendly staff. Very supportive during a work event.
Negative experience: need to clean the pool they need to stop experienced swimmers in the slow lane. most annoying swim with some guy swimming past fast and nearly kicking me
Fantastic experience: Take my daughter football but seems great there
Fantastic experience: Clean with good facilities, I very much appreciate the free car parking.
Negative experience: Better took over and now adults can swim when children are having their lessons. This is not safe at all. The adults were not even properly dressed, very disgusting. Not safe for our children again
Negative experience: Terrible communication through email. Way better when active was in charge, better group have ruined this place… track is not in good condition. Go to Stratford.
Fantastic experience: Nice place to be and access to facilities required.
Fantastic experience: A place where everybody can come and enjoy health and fitness for life
Negative experience: Total Rip off. They are only better for making money. Somebody needs to do something about these scumbags charging absurd amount of money for using that shady place.
Fantastic experience: Very good environment to play and have fun
Positive experience: Newham Leisure Centre is a sports and leisure centre owned by Newham Council but operated by Better Sports Services. The equipment is adequate, old but not special. Some of the staff members are helpful and friendly but others are the complete opposite. It is an okay place to workout but nothing special.
Positive experience: A nice and relaxed and leisure centre. Could do with nicer changing rooms and showers along with return quid lockers rather than needing to find 20p everything that isn't returned
Positive experience: Great facilities, very friendly And helpful staff. It’s really easy to book online via better app. I booked badminton and phoned the number from better and they said we could rent rackets and shuttle - but they don’t rent those. So best to take your own!
Fantastic experience: Great staff, smiling, friendly and helpful . Very clean space (swimming &gym&washrooms) . Well organised.I love this place! I strongly recommend!✅
Positive experience: Kinda run down running track! Shabby seating under leaking gutters. Litter.
Fantastic experience: Happy to be a member of Newham Liesure Center. so nice place .
Fantastic experience: Brilliant community gym with wonderful helpful staff……
Positive experience: Great place to take the kids for a swim.
Positive experience: Only go here for my daughters dance class, used to be members both of us got ear infections from swimming so we don't do that there anymore.
Positive experience: It's OK... It have all the activities, good size swimming pool, maybe a little TLC to improve the building.
Fantastic experience: Haven't been for so long but bit the bullet and started swimming again. It was great. Staff was very helpful, and the water wasn't as cold as I was expecting.
Positive experience: If you want to cancel the contract, need 1 month notice
Positive experience: Nice place to play badminton also lots of free parking spaces.
Fantastic experience: I have been using the facilities since I was a little boy. I take my son to skating haven roller disco we have so much fun good people good vibes
Positive experience: It's okay, not good compared to the east ham leisure centre, there are pros and cons. East Ham has a good campus but they have given Very less parking space to the leisure centre while new ham is having good parking space
Positive experience: Very nice pool and staff..no private changing rooms which I like
Fantastic experience: Nice place for children swimming lessons, karate and other sports related activities. The auto gates are extremely annoying, especially when you are standing around to be let out, but I guess they serve a purpose for safety for all. Plenty of free parking.
Negative experience: They don’t offer “Bring a Friend” option for it’s members.
Negative experience: There isn't any family changing rooms or group change. There isn't any facilities to support people with needs either - this weekend having to get squashed in to a little dirty disabled toilet to change my boys for their swimming lesson (one which has Autism and doesn't like small spaces), I felt really let down by the centre.
Fantastic experience: Great customer service from Alejandro - who opened one of the pitches after closure, after I had accidentally left my football boots! Shoutout to him and his helpful colleague who went out of their way to help me!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic swim . Thank you. Clean and pool lovely n warm
Fantastic experience: I love Newham. It's got better over the years. However, the only thing missing is a sauna suite, so I can enjoy a relaxing afternoon after my workout in the morning. Please consider it...
Positive experience: Good value, loads of classes such as gymnastics, swim lesson, and martial arts etc. Pool is basic but great for swimming lessons.
Negative experience: When it was active it was good gym , Better has now taken over its got worse its now costing me more to go to the gym as they have taken over my wife and myself used to go to the gym together which we had done at least 2 years now because of there time changes we have been separated. They use the title well being they should remove it cos the only well being is for themselves and the word better gym change that too the worst gym
Fantastic experience: Well organised, wide range of activities for all age groups . General swimming sessions are awesome and highly recommend for families.
Negative experience: I booked a women’s only swimming session. 15mins before the session was about to finish a male staff came in to check the water, which is quite inappropriate. Changing room is quite dirty. But the staff members are really friendly.
Positive experience: Customer service staff are hit and miss. Life guards and swimming teachers seem nice though. Family splash is for up to 8 years old but is usually at 3pm which makes sense as to why it's so empty during term time. Seems wasteful. Would be nice if there were more general swims rather than so many adult lane swims. Also would be better if general swims were consecutive so that you could do a double session without waiting 20 minutes between some of them. Other centres do consecutive swims. Free parking which surprisingly is not over abused by non members as there's always space. Gym equipment is good. The place does need a bit of a face-lift though. Some parts look as though it's falling apart.
Negative experience: Worst and awful swimming pool I’ve ever been. The manager of the swimming pool did not inform us and took away all the bath towels, clothes and bags of our children. After our children took a bath, they stood there like this, with no bath towels, no warm clothes and very cold. If we did not go everywhere to find our things and ask them at the front desk, they would not take our things out voluntarily. And the reason they do these things is because we put the kids' clothes in the changing room a minute or two earlier, which is disgusting They take £0.20 for locker and that goes into the security box which you can’t take back (!) never suggest !
Positive experience: Enjoy playing football there however I wouldn’t say the pitch is big enough for 7 aside hence why it didn’t get the full 5 stars.
Negative experience: The gym is standard. Reception staff are rude and not welcoming. Extremely poor customer service too, especially Rabia. She is extremely rude and unprofessional. She needs to get sacked!
Negative experience: Worst swimming pool I’ve ever been. The level of chlorine was really too high as you won’t see anything under water. Went to free adult swimming but there were no free lane swimming as I had a non-swimmer with me. They take £0.20 for locker and that goes into the security box which you can’t take back (!) never suggest !
Positive experience: Good and affordable 3g pitches. 7 a side
Fantastic experience: Helpful staff. Clean and well planned out. I went there for roller skating. #skatinghaven Sunday afternoon. Great fun, with boot camp and all the safety gear plus a big hall. Loved it!
Positive experience: Kids loved the swimming pool, it has its own parking which is great and I think it would be cheaper if you get membership if you are using it regularly
Positive experience: The gym facilities are ok. The ceilings are awful with leakage stains all over. It makes the gym like really run down. The space is also not that big and therefore monthly fee I would say is too high.
Negative experience: The hijabi lady at the reception is extremely lazy (an understatement). Throws every excuse in the book to attempt to not get up from her slouch and open the gates. If there’s badminton in the other hall which is quite a distance away, why does she expect the main card holder who could be mid game to go all the way to reception to let his players in? Have some common courtesy, she does this week in week out with the same faces. Meaning she knows they’re genuine people with a genuine booking, but again refuses on every occasion under the pretence of needing the main card holder. We have not had this issue with any other staff member, just her. If you’re not cut out to do your job then please resign.
Fantastic experience: I love that gym and it got a pool plus different rooms for group classes. There's something for everyone. Nice big gym with two floors. It got everything one needs to stay fit.
Fantastic experience: New Ham leisure center is one stop shop for all your leisure needs. This facility has all sports for children right from bellet dancing classes, taekwondo, swimming, football, basketball, baseball, museum and all sort of a better exercise classes.
Positive experience: I came to the leisure centre to play football. The pitches are a decent size for 7 a side match. I believe it costs £3.50 pp The surface is not great. However the goal size is slightly squarish. Lots of parking on site.
Fantastic experience: This has swimming pools and classes, gym, raquet games, ballet dance, and karate classes. Everything! All the activities at one place.
Fantastic experience: Great family sports centre and athletic track.. Lots of on site parking.
Negative experience: The set up for swimming is that you have to book a 30 minute slot 6 days in advance. Absolutely ridiculous
Fantastic experience: I visited the gym and it was very clean and tidy and great equipment.
Fantastic experience: Everything is perfect. straightforward. wonderful people working. Massive thanks for IRINA .
Fantastic experience: East London JKA Karate classes are good. Large changing rooms, showers and toilets in good condition. Bench seats in the hall. Big sports hall and helpful staff.
Positive experience: Good place to do activities. This place use to be very good before but since covid so many facilities has been cut down. Badminton use to be from 7am to 11 pm on week days and week ends till 9pm. Now week days only till 8pm and week end 5pm. Poor lighting on the sectors. Looks like poor maintenance. Wish it will come on its old state.
Positive experience: Okay gym equipment. But the £30 price tag is not worth it. What’s the point when you can’t get all the classes, only those before 4pm. People have work until 6/7. Very fustrating. Better gyms out there
Positive experience: Every week swimming at Newham leisure centre. Swimming staffs are friendly and lovely. Enough parking staff for everyone. However, Newham is not always clean. Changing room is most times dirty, have to call management on few occasion to get the place cleaned. Also depending on where your child is swimming, you may not get a view and have to stand by the pool to see them! Either way, my children enjoy going swimming here.
Negative experience: There is no slot booking system or slot availability on every Friday as we are keep trying to do it for past few moths as there is no availability after 5 pm and no slot is available over there. We spoke to manager last time and she advised it has go through online only but there is no availability for past few months and we understand that it’s been simply disabled form their inside official site as they don’t want open it for public. I believe the central management should take initiative for it unless they don’t want take care of local people heath and physical improvements.
Positive experience: Great and easy access, ample parking. The shower and WC facilities are limited unfortunately. I wish it would open until 11pm.
Negative experience: This is the only gym in London without WiFi and air conditioning system working on low temperature even in cold season.. to be as cold as possible inside.. You need a winter jacket inside or even worse, they make sure you catch a cold at the gym so you don't go to the gym as often
Negative experience: Terrible staff at reception. Unhelpful, disinterested, only want to talk to each other. They seem offended that the public are allowed in. Very poor.
Negative experience: I am not a big fan of customer service but expect better facility. They should improve lighting and floor cleaning badly. I used to play badminton but don't want to join anymore. They used to provide 24 hours service. Now a days , badminton slots are closed at 8.40pm. Because I finish my work at 6pm everyday and reach home by 7pm. I m totally frustrated. I have to drive almost 11 miles every day at Better leisure centre to play badminton where I get good customer service, excellent lighting & outstanding court facility.
Negative experience: I have been trying to book swimming lesson for kids from last 6 months . They keep saying send email . I didn’t get any response from anyone . Worst customer service . When I call them they keep saying no space available from last one year . I live in Newham but have to take kids to Greenwich borough . Shame on your customer service .
Fantastic experience: Really nice gym and pool. Reasonably priced. Staff super helpful and friendly. Nice locals to chat to.
Positive experience: I use this centre for badminton. However the courts are not well maintained. The floor needs deep cleaning and it feels like you are playing badminton in Ice rink due to slippage. The lighting needs improvement as it is too dull and it is struggle to find a shuttle when you clear it high in the air.
Negative experience: I decided to join as they advertised having a boxing bag. After arriving on day 1, I noticed that the bag was missing. When I asked the gym trainer about it, he said, I don't know when it will be back. I expected better customer service and atleast a bit more info. How long do they expect me to pay a membership when I can't do the very thing I joined for? I decided to cancel and now they want to charge me another months fees. The African woman at reception appears to be racist as she ignores white people and spends large amounts of time chatting to her friends, while you stand there waiting. Bad attitude all round.
Fantastic experience: Been coming here for years, helpful staff and clean exercise equipment. When my daughter is older I will be booking her swimming lessons here.
Positive experience: Friendly staff, outdated equipment but im still able to get a good workout. Not too busy most times
Positive experience: Centre was clean and I really enjoy my game. But customer service was terrible. First lady was ignoring us when we walked in and the second lady at the reception desk was starting at the computer screen when my friend was asking for information and she did not give her eyes contact at all. Some of them are not helpful at all. Customer service or tell me if I'm wrong or what is the job description?
Positive experience: Went for a 'general' swim with kids. Expect no bells and whistles, average size pool with open changing area for males. Hot showers, clean facilities but regarding the swim they just provide the water. No floats, balls or other swimming fun stuff.
Negative experience: Was playing badminton here for over 2 years before finally cancelling. The staff are a pain to deal with, they have no customer service training whatsoever. I've also spent a countless number of hours calling customer support regarding constant issues I had with the online booking system (for which I'm still owed a refund for £25) - I had a membership which included Badminton court bookings, however I was still getting charged for bookings. I routinely had to call every week to tell them the value of the amount they owed me as a refund. Every time I spoke to management to ask when this is being resolved their answer was always "it is still getting looked into". This went on for a long time, in the end I just got tired of dealing with an incompetent leisure centre and just cancelled/moved on. In the last few months the sports hall has been filthy, the floor rarely gets cleaned and there's a foul odour in the air.
Fantastic experience: Really a great place. In one place you get everything as you require football, badminton, swimming, gym and many more. I love this place but so kuch tight schedule because its busy in the weekend so booking need to be prioritize.
Positive experience: The gym- most equipment still the same. A little more spaced out due to covid. They have sanitising stations...well recommended to use them! Book sessions using the app, arrive 10mins before and you can get in. Friendly helpful staff!
Negative experience: Take forever to pick up the phone and badminton bookings always fully booked very hard ti find a slot
Positive experience: I run a youth cricket club, Newham CC, and we do our winter training indoors at Newham Leisure Centre. The facilities are really good and affordable for a volunteer run community club like us, and the staff are great. The equipment needs an upgrade though (new cricket mats in particular)
Negative experience: I tried to contact Newham leisure centre, no reply to email. Phone number it is a joke, you cannot even call it. It automatically switches off in 10 seconds. Sad , I would be ashamed if that was my organisation .
Fantastic experience: Great leisure centre. I had swimming lessons when i was younger, brings back a lot of positive memories. Great staff!!
Negative experience: Shocking. Been a member for over a year now. When you want to cancel you have to send an email or write to them. Why can we not do this over the phone? When you do call takes over an hour for a response and then most of the time they answer and hang up
Negative experience: Yesterday I visited there. A lady stuff (aged around 55) didn't let me in because of I am a muslim. she shuted the door twice infront of my face with a aggressive facial expressitons. The Newham leisure centre should fired such a raicist stuff who does not welcome people who are different background, religion and ethnicity.
