PureGym Manchester First Street: Opinions
Negative experience: Decent equipment and facility but lacking any hygiene stations. When I asked member of staff, he said yes it’s disgusting, we don’t provide cleaning equipment. Not good enough.
Hi Mo, thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. PureGym prides itself on being able to offer state of the art fitness facilities to our members in a safe and welcoming environment. We developed industry-leading cleaning and hygiene protocols, including the introduction of cleaning stations, to help keep our members and employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the reduced risk and in line with the Government’s ending of legal restrictions, we have decided to remove self-cleaning stations in our gyms, which will also support our sustainability objectives by reducing our paper towel waste. We’re proud to say that many of the protocols implemented during lockdown, such as frequent and regular cleaning, and improvements to our air ventilation systems, will continue to be a core part of our TrainSafe Commitment. Thanks, PureGym
Negative experience: Women’s comfort at stake Been going at Pure for almost 1,5 years and I can safely say that it is a mediocre gym at best. But my main problem was the constant presence of male cleaners at the female changing rooms even when female cleaners were around. There was one instance when 2 male cleaners were in the female changing rooms. I complained to the local managers they did nothing. I complained higher up at the Pure Gym’s management, they told me it was a one time thing (although this had already happened 5-6 times). Then I spoke to the male cleaner and he told me that he is a regular cleaner in the female changing rooms over the weekend. So, not only is this not an isolated incident, but the lack of taking any action when females complain that they feel uncomfortable is beyond me. Leaving the gym and never going back!
Fantastic experience:
Hi. Thanks for taking the time to leave this review, we are delighted to see this is 5 stars. We want to provide our members with a safe space in which they can get a great workout in and do so, in a clean and friendly environment. It’s great to hear you enjoy using the gym overall! Thanks, PureGym
Negative experience: The hygiene conditions in the male changing rooms is appalling. In all Puregyms in Manchester, the one at Urban Exchange used to be the dirtiest and filthiest. Now, First Street has definitely taken the crown. which I might add, there was a more mature (more experienced) lady manager in early morning. Relentlessly keeping everything tidy and clean. but since she has disappeared for couple weeks to a month now, younger managers has substituded. and honestly the situation has gone very very very bad.
Hi, thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We're sorry to hear that you have concerns surrounding the cleanliness of your gym. We work hard to ensure that our gyms are a safe and comfortable environment for all of our members, and always take member feedback on board. Please may we ask that you contact us directly to discuss this feedback further? This can either be done with your Gym Manager in the gym, or by contacting our Member Services team on [email protected]. Thanks, PureGym
Positive experience: Decent gym with all the main machines you would need. Not a massive amount of benches. Would be nice to see staff encouraging people to put back weights etc to keep it tidy - other than that pretty good tho :)
Fantastic experience: What a great gym - I came here for the first time today while Exchange Quay is being refitted. The equipment is excellent and it's in a great location, the gym is clean and whilst it's considerably smaller than Exchange Quay, it has everything you need. A great site.
Negative experience: The staff can't keep commitments to classes. They cancel them without any notice, leading to you attending them and finding the class no longer existing. They technically don't cancel the class - they just rearrange them to an earlier date, meaning there's no automatic notifications. To add insult to this - when asking staff about it (the same staff who was scheduled to run the class) - they lie and claim there never was a class, and don't apologise for the issue. Guess it's just a coincidence the class leader is in the gym at the exact time the class was scheduled hey? Can't think of a worse way for it to be handled. If you cancel the class, actually cancel it so we at least get notified - and certainly don't lie when questioned about it.
Positive experience: Pretty compact gym, but it has all the main stuff you'd expect and the upstairs studio is really nice and spacious (if a bit dark and dungeony) and you get a good number of classes available. Equipment is a bit limited but it is a small local gym so it's to be expected. I usually train in the evening so I miss the big rush & I appreciate that it's open late at night so I can fit those late workouts in without having to fight for a spot. There's a fair bit of dead space upstairs which could easily fit more equipment (boxing bags please!!!!) or at least a few more free weight benches. The only real complaint I have is that the changing rooms clearly don't get cleaned very often because they're always a mess.
Fantastic experience: The best pure gym in Manchester! It’s a compact gym, it’s laid out well and it’s super clean and tidy always!
Negative experience: Having been at this gym since its opened.. I recently cancelled. This gym has one focus - get as many students in as possible. It's becoming unusable as a gym, no matter what time or day you go. When universities are on holiday it gets even worse. With 4 or 5 more student tower blocks under construction just a few metres away... if this gym doesn't limit members or expand - then don't bother. You open up the app to see how busy it is and just laugh.
Negative experience: Not enough equipment, very rude staff, absolutely not acceptable costumer service. Better to choose another pure gym.
Negative experience: Am I the only person that is concerned about AC not working for over a month? I have told the staff and all I got was to workout near the entrance door? Which is a joke! For a gym that is fairly new (just about a year since opening) the facilities are run down and as I said AC is really important in a gym with such low ceilings that gets really busy even after 9pm.
Positive experience: Big gym but mostly cardio machines. One smith machine and not enough weights for big mans.
Negative experience: Since the 30% student discount came into force the gym has become unusable. To use any of the equipment, you have to wait as per a doctors appointment. There are insufficient weight plates and dangerously little space between a lot of the free weights stations. As always, the staff are great, but you need to increase the size of the gym, as you aren't the cheapest deal in town.
Fantastic experience: Stanislav was patient, professional & supportive - thank you! He helped with my technique, and confidence with the equipment.
Fantastic experience: Kelly was amazing
Fantastic experience: Did my First HIIT Step class with Kelly and she was absolutely incredible! Great guidance and made me feel confident even tho it was my first time!
Fantastic experience: Agness ran a great workout! Worked a nice sweat up and had fun!
Fantastic experience: Excellent exercise classes for all abilities! The staff are really helpful and make you feel welcomed
Fantastic experience: Great Thursday early morning class as usual
Fantastic experience: Great staff Great classes Fantastic value for money
Fantastic experience: Excellent boot camp with Luke, as always. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: Luke gave a really good bootcamp class, the stations were well thought through and he helped everyone with their technique. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Good value for money gym with decent equipment (though more weights designed for smaller hands would be a bonus). There are some really good instructors here. Luke, Ryan and Jakub in particular.
Positive experience: Finally found a gym with pec deck lol. Gym is really nice. Clean and tidy. Seems like a new gym. Lot of high quality equipments. Only downside is it’s a small gym compared to other gyms in Manchester. Overall it’s great gym. Solid 4 stars.
Positive experience: Not sure what’s the idea of keep playing loud music when most of the people bring their own and listen thru their headphones, I even saw the cleaners bringing their own headphones! It’s a bit disturbing & unnecessary I think! Wouldn’t mind if you keep playing your poppy music as long is not played too loud! Many thanks!
Positive experience: The gym is okay, but why do all the new puregyms not have safety bars on the racks? Stupid decision!
Positive experience: Bardzo fajne miejsce, dosyc duża strefa wolnych ciężarów, dużo ławeczek, na pietrze dużo maszyn do wyboru. Nawet w godzinach szczytu znajdzie się miejsce gdzie można sie porozciągać, czasem trzeba chwile poczekać aż miejsce do ćwiczenia sie zwolni. Safety spotter?
Positive experience: Great place to workout. Gym is not big. During workdays after 5 PM its quite busy but overall is great. Wish that in mens changing room was more ventilation and fresh air. But overall solid 4 stars. Thanks.
Fantastic experience: I liked the fact that the equipment was new and well maintained
Fantastic experience: Clean, well maintained, friendly staff. Would you consider investing in a seated calf raise machine? Will take pressure off the one standing calf raise machine and targets the calf heads better.
Fantastic experience: great all machinery is new and well maintained
Fantastic experience: I've recently started at first street coming from Market St and the difference is HUGE. Much more organized, classes are nice and its not always packed like mkt st.
Negative experience: This genuinely laughable place hasn’t installed wifi in nearly 7 months being open. They’re lying to all of their members saying ‘there’s an issue’, providing 0 updates. Most recently, as of 7 months in, they’ve posted a piece of paper in the corner saying ‘we’re sorry please email head office’. Said head office email is an auto-response to sign up for a membership Worst of all they’ve had their own staff wifi since opening day. Anyone streaming music whilst they train have to rely on very little cellular service as the building has terrible service. To epitomise this place, there is a very heavy automatic door at the entrance, it broke in week 1. They put up a piece of paper again, ‘door broke, will be fixed’, about a month later, that piece of paper as taken down, the door remains broken to this year. Terrible management at a terrible club, unfortunately the closest to where we live by some way. I have never seen such a cheapskate members last approach to managing any establishment. Alas this is a complete waste of breath, they ignore every single piece of detracting feedback.
Fantastic experience: Very solid gym, lots of good equipment and Ali one of the PTs was very kind in helping me out with some lifting stuff today!
Fantastic experience: A small gym but fantastic equipment so more up-to-date then Spinningfields
Fantastic experience:
Fantastic experience: Best things 24/7 open
Negative experience: Too crowded. The gym equipment is poorly placed with no mirrors facing the squat racks. Unprofessional!
Fantastic experience: It is perfect for a fitness upgrade process while having a Job. Accessible from any corner of the city.
Positive experience: Not the best not the worst. Changing rooms are quite small and they are not open 24h. They close from 12am to 3am so you can't change nor take a shower after workout. Benches in changing room are quite shallow and you can't control the water temperature in the shower but there is nothing you can do about it. Sometimes non enough aspiration in the shower area and/or too cold air cond right outside showers. Gym has enough machine although they wasted space in not getting leg extension + curl, they have 2 separate machines for these; or lat + pulley, again 2 separate machines. Good free weight choice with a lot of squat racks. No blue rolls to wipe down machines unfortunately, no WiFi (phone network simply doesn't work in free weight area)
Positive experience: Great little gym, lots of new equipment, but not a lot of classes on order.
Negative experience: It is extremely hard to cancel your membership, and you nearly can not find any help of your membership status. Avoid here.
Fantastic experience: Really friendly and encouraging trainers. Good array of classes and exercise routines.
Positive experience: It's a nice little gym with good equipment, clean toilets and plenty of squat racks. Only downside is there is no cleaning stations anywhere, which put me off going - all other PureGyms seem to have some. It does get very hot in there also and would be great to have some WiFi as phone reception is poor and I struggled to access my workouts (no fault of the gym, they can't help that!)
Positive experience: Gym is good value for money but has recently attracted loads of scruffy students and insta tarts.
Negative experience: PureGrime, PoorGym. Filthy. Cramped, Crowded gym floor. Go elsewhere! I only use this gym when I've got absolutely no other choice and always regret it! Equipment is slimy, slippery, covered in people's sweat. Contrary to every other PureGym there's no blue roll or sanitiser to wipe it down so you have no choice but to embrace others people's sweat and grime. This with no aircon and poor ventilation makes the gym smell really bad. Especially downstairs... I appreciate the amount of stations/machines but in such a small space it doesn't work, you keep bumping into other people as the gym is always packed. No wifi only nails it.
Fantastic experience: Excelent gym. Clean, new and unique. The app lets you know how many people are in there and there is no pressure from other gym goers. Great for newbys or regulars
Positive experience: Super busy and very cramped. Though the equipment was good and it was clean, you feel too close to other people working out.
Negative experience: Crammed, always full, lack of equipment. I only joined because my local the gym closed down.
Positive experience: Good gym with lots of different equipment. Gets really busy though at peak times which makes it unusable
Negative experience: Classic Puregym, over sold on membership, staff are Clueless, no Aircon, it's small, no WiFi. Join somewhere else.
Negative experience: Lacking equipment, no safety bars for squat racks, instagram gym
Fantastic experience: Great new gym, clean and tidy, not too busy in the mornings (for the moment!) Really handy central Manchester location.
Fantastic experience: Nice and calm environment
Positive experience: Decent gym, smaller than some of the other pure gyms but it's too be expected with a city centre location. Staff are friendly and there's a good quantity of equipment, especially squat racks.
Negative experience: Cramped and equipment is not arranged with wheelchair users or other disabilities in mind. Staff are rude, fake or untrustworthy. The classes aren’t planned for a variety of fitness levels. The studio is not well ventilated. The decor isn’t modern and it’s grey and depressing. Music is naff. Terrible none healthy vending machines. The doors don’t always work well and are confusing. Pure gym have this gaslighting abusive policy whereby they tell you to “set off in good time” and if you’re late for your class three times you are suspended from booking classes for over a week, which is unkind and gaslighting to the majority of gym users. Not enough well planned out classes. Some other gym users are rude and no staff are there managing that. I could go on but theres only so much I can type on a review. I an asthmatic and there’s no policy staying aerosols aren’t permitted. Depressing gym, don’t give them the £15 joining fee they are robbing you blind.
Fantastic experience: one of the better gyms in the area. Reasonably priced, clean and good equipment.
Negative experience: If I could give this place a 0 I would. Avoid if you're serious about working out. This gym is far too small to justify its existence. Considering its size Puregym has done an awful job in optimising the available space, with lots of kit shoved in without any thought as to how the equipment will be used. In the two times I've been I've had to zigzag across the gym because I can't get somewhere because of other people working out on machines or benches. A perfect example of this is the fact there is a sleigh lane with a sleigh that is wider than the actual lane so you can't even use it!!!! The variety in the machines is very poor due to space available, so only expect bog standard machinery such as leg machines, a few tricep machines, and far too many cable machines. All cardio equipment is in miles only so good luck if you train in kilometers. The gym is also really hot, so expect to struggle to breathe whilst doing cardio and come out dripping. You'd have thought the AC would be working well considering its brand new. Finally there is no wifi and the building completely blocks 4G/5G so forget about using your phone whilst in there. Do yourself a favour and go to literally any other gym in town.
Fantastic experience: Smaller than the other puregyms I've been to and has no cycle session which I will miss however it's a lovely gym! It's Bright, has fantastic new equipment and not over heavy with treadmills instead of other machines.
Fantastic experience: Best Gym in Manchester and the staffs are very friendly, especially "Agie" is one of best trainer
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, wide range of equipment and spread out over 2 floors
