PureGym Brighton Central: Opinions
Negative experience: Purely the worst gym I have ever set foot in - 1) it is filthy, smelly and poorly organised. 2) the people are heinous. The culture of the gym clearly promotes and enables the selfish behaviour of the cretins that frequent this dumpster fire. 3) the machines feel like they are made of LEGO and may come tumbling down around you at any given moment. 4) the non LEGO esque items (cable handles, barbells etc) are few and far between, when looking for these items I was advised by the staff to hunt them down as they are just dumped in places. Save your time, energy and money and go elsewhere.
Negative experience: Would not recommend it. The staff are not very helpful. There is always something broken and the internet connection is bad, dropping constantly when I'm in the gym.
Fantastic experience: Just joined, and it's such a nice gym. Very happy with my choice and good value for money
Negative experience: Very dirty. People don’t really clean the machines after using and the sanitation system they have is very poor as the sprays are locked on the station so you have to spray on a very bad quality tissue and this is very ineffective as the plastic of the machines and the type of tissue don’t really work well. We need to be able to spray directly on the machines for them to get properly sanitised clean. Even if u have a towel its not possible to avoid touching someone else’s sweat ☠️

Positive experience: I have been coming to this gym for years ever since I moved to Brighton in 2017. Overall, I prefer the London Rd gym. Whenever there are issues in the gym, they take a long time to fix. A certain section of the weight machines between the two changing rooms has been cordoned off for a very long time now. The men’s changing room generally tends to be dirty/messy; unfortunately I’ve seen some of the younger members leave a mess on several occasions and once these Arab boys were vandalising gym equipment inside. I would suggest Pure Gym to review the age policy for members (perhaps increase it to 18). Many of the lockers also are either broken or don’t shut/open properly. Some lockers seem to have stuff inside permanently - possibly people leaving stuff overnight. Overall the trainers seem to be nice, though over the years I have noticed a couple who came across rude and arrogant. The location is very good. Generally when I go it’s not too busy whereas the London Rd gym can get hectic. Still, overall I prefer the vibe at the latter. Most gym members aside from the youngsters seem decent enough.
Negative experience: No toilet paper in the women bathroom
Fantastic experience: Lara's Tuesday lunchtime Spin classes have been great. She will be missed; but, Brighton Central, please leave this popular class on the timetable.

Fantastic experience: Equipment includes: 2x Smith Machine, 2x Fixed Flat Barbell Bench, 1x Fixed Incline Barbell Bench, 3x Power Racks, 2x Lifting Platform, 1x Plate Loaded Hack Squat, 1x Plate Loaded Leg Press (was out of order), 1x Plate Loaded Shoulder Press, 6+ Adjustable Benches, Dumbbells to 50kg, 1x Cable Cross Over Stack, 1x 4-way Cable Stack with Lat Pulldown & Low Row, lots of Matrix Pin Loaded Machines (abductor, adductor, legg press, Hamstring Curls, Pec Deck, Leg Extension, Shoulder Press, Chest Press etc). Loads of cardio equipment too. Bring your own padlock. Changing rooms have lots of showers.
Negative experience: Overcrowded gym with with poor selection of equipment and oftne broken. Limited number of barbells Don't have barbell pads ,bands , dodgy machines etc. Weight plates everywhere no staff tidy them up either. Only 2 of 4 girls bathroom cubicles available for weeks now, and the shower smells bad. General problems everywhere including trying to enter the gym pin not working

Fantastic experience: Having tried a few gym's in the past I would say for the money this is an excellent gym, the team are very friendly and helpful. They are just about to have some work completed and they have given members access to a gym that isn't in the normal package of other gyms you can access, I think this is very good of them and will help to minimise the impact of getting in to a gym whilst the work is being done. I would highly recommend this gym and PureGym as an organisation to anyone of any ability or fitness as an excellent way to get into going to the gym and improving your fitness, health and wellbeing. Positive experience: Big hole in the ceiling above the leg press, and desperately in need of a refurb (Pure Gym head office take note!), but other than that I really liked it! Has everything you need and is spread out rather nicely. Plus there’s a plate-loaded hack squat, so all in all I was very happy with this gym ❤️
Positive experience: The gym is on. Completely rammed at peak times. The showers however are terrible barely luke warm. It’s not summer now guys turn up the boiler and the heating in there please it’s freezing

Positive experience: The Gym is too busy! I joined the gym last Saturday and went for my first exercise. On Saturday it was fairly quiet and I was able to complete a nice exercise. Today I went to the gym after work and it was absolutely packed. I was lucky to get a treadmill but after finishing a run I tried to find a bench to be able to do some dumbbell exercises but there was no space at all. Not to mention there isn't a lot of machines as well as I saw people queueing up to be able to use them. I decided to walk home instead. I think the gym is okay but unfortunately way too busy to accommodate my needs.
Fantastic experience: Great gym with a team of fantastic instructors. Has a good variety of equipment despite being fairly compact. The real selling point of this gym is the brilliant class space and spin room. I used to hate working out but the instructors make the classes so engaging and fun that I actually enjoy myself when exercising which I never thought would happen!! Lara in particular is a ray of sunshine, so knowledgeable, helpful, welcoming and caring of all members.

Positive experience: Place is good. Sometimes it is too busy and this creates issues with available equipment and spaces. Cleanliness could be improved. Otherwise staff are friendly, cosy atmosphere and fair fees.

Caters for all sorts of people, from professional athletes to grannies. Lots of kit, clean changing rooms, and a choice of classes. What are you waiting for? Just DO IT!

Positive experience: I like this gym and have trained here for a couple years now. Way better than my old PureGym in London - never has dumbbells in the wrong place and plates on the floor. All the stuff you need. One caution I would give is to bring headphones, especially if you train frequently. There is a somewhat psychotically selected music playlist of various repeated songs that have the lowest energy you could imagine.

Negative experience: First time visiting this gym 14 Feb 2023 around midday. I had a free day pass and wasn't sure how to use it. Saw a member of staff in the entrance area with 'manager' on his uniform. He was on the phone and I did not want to interrupt him so I was waiting for him to finish his conversation. I waited several minutes , he was aware of my presence but did not make eye contact, or gesture to me in any way. In fact he blatantly ignored me and made no attempt to stop his conversation and offer assistance. I was unaware of an assistance button which he later pressed and I assumed that it was to get someone to come and help me. A female member of staff called Lara eventually came and assisted me. She was lovely. Very helpful , patient and friendly. I gave her feedback regarding my experience and told her that it is always nice to be acknowledged!!!! I felt that it was very rude to be ignored in that manner and I did not feel valued as a potential client. Whoever that 'manager' was he needs a few lessons in customer service etiquette !! If any one from Pure Gym head office reads this, I commend LARA for being an exemplary staff member and for her professionalism and customer service. Whoever the so called "manager" was he needs to brush up on his manners and customer service. The gym facilities were fairly decent but I did go at a busy time (around midday) so it was quite packed. I have tried out other Pure gyms (Liverpool, Leeds) and the staff there were lovely ,it really makes a difference- treat people how you would like to be treated!
Negative experience: It use to be good gym but now it is horrible they make membership higher and start closing early and even they use to have Wi-Fi but now at evening they stop it as well . Joining this place totally waste of money
Negative experience: Time 24/7 why ? Close at 22.00? Not nice.
Negative experience: No longer open 24hours (although all the advertising says it is)! Wonder if there’ll be a reduction in the price as its only open 2/3 of the original hours?
Negative experience: Shut multiple times for reasons like CCTV or boiler issues, just a nuisance really. Then they decided to do a locker break without any warning, and I was handed back my personal possessions in a crumpled black bin bag. Thanks

Positive experience: This gym has very limited floor space, so if you want to use mats etc you have to avoid all the classes. Also no TRX. Basically they just want shiny equipment for the photos. Looks nice though eh?

Negative experience: I joined because of the 24h access. London road gym is horrible and it smells horrible Just not comfortable for me , due to this worst decision they made i am cancelling my membership.
Negative experience: I have been a member since it was LA Fitness. As a PureGym it was always 24/7 open. So convenient to people who work until night like it always was my case. Today I arrived 15 Minutes before 22.00, as usually. I could not access. The only member of the staff inside told me from today 16th of January the gym will be closing at 22.00... Just like that. A bunch of members were living the gym visibly annoyed and complaining. Obviously. Embarrassing and disgusting decision. A decision which is completely against to its on slogan: absolutely ridiculous. I finish work around 21.15 and I am coming almost every day after work to have a training session in which has been my 'local' gym for over 6 years. Now, suddenly, I see myself checking for other gyms nearby. PureGym is finished to me. The PureGym in London Rd it's far from mine and I already walk 40 minutes from work to the gym before I head back home in the of my day. So not an alternative. P.S: I was asked if I received the email letting me know about this 'little' change. Unacceptable.
Negative experience: Ok (ish) gym if you just need to lift standard weights. The gym is not clean, so might be a good idea to bring some wipes. Hot water is hit and miss. Plus it is not a 24 hour gym anymore. However, the staff is friendly.

Negative experience: No longer 24hrs. Showers unreliable for months. ,............... I can't see I can respond to your reply, so I have edited my original feedback to respond. The Brighton Central gym from around the 12th January will no longer be 24 hours which is crazy for a city gym. The 2nd Pure Gym on the outskirts of the city centre will carry on being 24 hours. You did not mention anything about the showers in your response and since my first feedback the gym is closed yet again, not because of the ongoing boiler situation but now CCTV not working. It seems your management team / maintenance team are running the gym into the ground. With reduced service and poor upkeep.

Positive experience: The gym is ok. Good availability of machines to work out. I prefer Bracknell, where I live, everything is nice and new. The environment is hostile. People hold the machines forever, don't share, roll their eyes if you ask, even personal trainers encourage this attitude; make a lot of noise throwing dumbells on the floor. The lockdown is over, so this attitude doesn't justify. Most people like me just have their breaktime to workout. I think you should start a campaign of education to change this mentality. From Brighton, which is seen as such a tolerant city but this gym really shows the opposite.

Positive experience: Can't complain for what you get too much. Happy its 24hrs, good price plans, some equipment have limited explanations on how to benefit from using them to the best. Some equipment could come in twos: having 1 only can be very limiting at peak times.

Negative experience: Gyms doesn’t have much equipment,showers and toilets tend to be dirty and always smelly. Sometimes you really have the feeling that the gym is left apart. It used to be better few months ago.
Hi Omar, thanks for your review. We have over 220 bits of kit in each gym and aim to have a broad spread, getting the balance right between cardio and weights. Staff do regular cleaning checks in the gym and we have dedicated cleaning teams who come each day to carry out. Of course, during peak times it can be difficult for us to compete all cleaning routines, however as soon as it is possible our staff will complete all procedures and checks. If you have any concerns or suggestions, please speak with your Gym Manager.
Fantastic experience: Pure Gym is a lovely gym in Brighton Central, friendly staff and good equipment. Open 24/7 I'd reccomend this gym if u need flexibility in your visits to the gym. Very good cleaning stations situated on the gym floor to clean equipment between uses. They have excellent spin classes and have recently started to run Learn to Deadlift classes during the week. Just waiting for them to put these on the weekends. Been going for a year now and would definitely reccomend to family and friends.

Negative experience: I used this gym for a month. But I went only 4-5 days. It discouraged me so much from going to a gym. All I can say is it's a big NO for me. Most of the staffs are very rude. It is always busy and over crowded. It is only suitable for someone who is looking for affordable gym membership and already have been a gym goer for a long time. So you will know your way. Otherwise as a beginner please find a better gym so it doesn't push you away from going to a gym.

Negative experience: Fine normal gym. Broken mens toilets, one disabled toilet for all the men. £8.99 for a day session.

Positive experience: I joined today and then I went to the gym but the toilet wasn’t work, which is must work at least one , people are drinking a lot of water so toilet must work at all the time .less machines and You need to put extra machines for the gym please

Negative experience: Poor Staff/Service - I went to Puregym in Brighton one evening and i left my watch on the treadmill, because they have CCTV and everyone has to login - I assumed they would catch the culprot who stole it. The staff refused to check the CCTV, as the Police told them too and I lost my watch! Would not use this gym again

Negative experience: The gym is so dirty and the studio floor is always dusty, God knows what the cleaner does over there other than stare at girls and pretend to clean near them. It’s also very annoying when a PT is training a client in the public studio, they should have a designated area. Don’t get me started on the creeps that frequent this gym… The only benefit I can think of is the central location.

Positive experience: The machines are out of date, the layout is awful with half the weights in one section and rest in another, missing machines (no leg curl for hamstring) and in general just not a good gym for the money you pay

Fantastic experience: After trying a few classes, really enjoying the pump classes, they’re motivational and just what I was after! Am going twice a week they’re so good. Great instructors too and good music. I’m not much of a gym goer but they’re something I always look forward to.

Negative experience: It's OK, noone cleans the equipment after use, staff are very limited. If you are self motivated and just need a quick gym fix or have a small workout to do i feel this will work for you. Never been at peak times but could imagine it being difficult to get a workout done. Atmosphere is very chill.

Our updated TrainSafe guidance follows government guidance, it is up to members to clean down equipment before/after use if they would like to. We are usually busiest around peak times between 5-8pm but have capacity limits in place so everyone can enjoy safe and great workouts! Thanks, PureGym
