East Ham Leisure Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Millie at the front desk was kind welcoming and informative! Thank you!
Fantastic experience: I frequently go to east London when I do I occasionally pop into this centre for some swimming! There is this life guard I rarely see I believe her name Lidia. When I see her she has always got a lovely smile and is always kind and happy! (I know I’ll feel safe if I ever start to drown)
Negative experience: Do not waste your money on children's swimming lessons. The instructors are so disinterested, during lessons they are too busy chit-chatting with the lifeguards which itself is a safety concern. The teaching pool is sectioned off to separate lessons. I saw 16 children squashed, and overcrowded like sardines in one of the sections (an area 3m wide) while the rest of the teaching pool was empty. I complained to management but no improvement, all I would say is not to commit to any membership and go and watch for 1 day!! The teaching pool is the smaller pool for younger children.
Negative experience: Appauling customer service ! Staff take days to respond, don't have any idea of the email trails that have gone on with other staff and then communicate in a really rude manner to customers ! SEE PHOTO OF EMAIL I received appauling ! Cancelled my membership and will be filling a complaint also !
Fantastic experience: Nice place for keep Urself active
Negative experience: My daughter had a really bad experience with one of the swimming teachers here. She is only 4 and it was her first lesson, however she is also confident in the water and confident in general and really excited about learning to swim. No she doesn't want to go swimming at anymore, she's totally spooked. It was the Sunday 8:30am session. He might be good for older children, I don't know. But I would definetely not recommend this teacher for young swimmers that are beginners. We have cancelled the lessons despite them being 5 minutes walk away and wil be going elsewhere once my daughter has gotten over her new fear.
Negative experience: My experience at East Ham Leisure Centre was deeply disappointing. I initially enrolled my child with high hopes, expecting a safe and supportive environment to help build confidence in swimming. Unfortunately, this was far from what we experienced. Firstly, the quality of teaching was incredibly subpar. The instructors were unengaged, frequently distracted, and showed little interest in actually helping the children learn. They often seemed more focused on socializing with each other than on giving any constructive feedback or encouragement to the kids. It felt as if the lessons were just a routine they went through, rather than tailored sessions meant to support each child’s progress. However, the most upsetting aspect was the clear racial bias displayed by some of the instructors. I noticed a distinct lack of patience and encouragement toward certain children, while others received noticeably better treatment and attention. When I raised my concerns with management, they were dismissive and brushed it off as a “misunderstanding.” This lack of accountability left me feeling unheard and extremely frustrated. Overall, Easy ham Leisure centre failed on almost every front. If you are looking for an inclusive, supportive place for your child to learn swimming, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. My experience has left me disappointed and, frankly, concerned for other families who might face the same treatment.
Fantastic experience: Good gym, good price and friendly staff.
Negative experience: No machines for arms !! This is terrible. So much space but can't manage to add machine for arm workout. Terrible Gym
Negative experience: The gym needs a good deep clean. Staffs should be more helpful and friendly towards the customers instead of staying on their mobile phone ..
Positive experience: Too costly for too little
Positive experience: a bit warm inside playground for batminton but overall not too bad.
Positive experience: Use to like this centre before. Since the new management (Better) took over the membership rates are increased a lot and unable to book badminton courts.
Negative experience: It was my first time to the centre today, I came to reception and spoke to a member of staff with Curly hair and mentioned that it was my first time here. She looked at me as if I’m speaking Greek to her, not welcoming at all and didn’t even bother point me to the right direction. Not a single act of courtesy I don’t even know why she works there. Next time this happens again, I will name and shame that staff in here as she is not offering proper customer service
Negative experience: I could probably write an essay on how awful this leisure centre is from the new company “Better” to the disgraceful staff members who clearly don’t care about their job. If there was a way to shut down better the world would be a much happier place. I will raise this with my local MP as no one is happy that active Newham were taken over by them. Funny how they call themselves “Better” when you are actually worse off!!! And don’t get me started on those clueless and rude staff members. One woman just sat at reception hasn’t got a scooby and just sits there and scowls? The other girls working there are too busy discussing when they need to go break rather than trying to help customers. They make you feel like burden for asking simple questions. The price definitely is not worth it all especially if you just want to use the gym. Leisure centres used to be such a wonderful place but now are full of rude staff members and been taken over by horrible corporations. 0 stars.
Negative experience: Poor lighting and poor ventilation at the badminton court. It’s too hot in there. They have the air cooler but only use them during the Judo classes. This place is ideal for day time badminton only during daylight. One of the staff member name Lashly is very rude. Everyone else seems very nice and helpful.
Negative experience: ok facilities but a pretty dirty gym. not as dirty as the attitude of some front desk members though, specifically a short male with dark hair and beard. clearly didn’t want to be at work given his attitude to multiple customers. as well as the other front desk staff stood chatting and barely acknowledging people at the desk. thought the company better gym would bring some improvement but clearly not
Positive experience: The facilities are good, especially the two swimming pool with the slides. The upkeep of the facilities leave a little to be desired, as various doors, seats and family showering all need fixing or upgrading. The front desk staff are clearly not there for the passion for customer service. The life guards how ever are amazing; on the ball and have a clearly difficult time with the some of the more rowdy guests to the fun swim sessions but stand their ground firmly.
Positive experience: Prices are too high from this month I think for one hour swimming they charging 6 pounds
Negative experience: Increased prices an its with new company - BETTER company now which doesn’t make sense. Price doesn’t reflect the gym equipment and facilities you get inside. Increased pay as you go prices and memberships compared to before. Before the prices were reasonable for what you get at East Ham leisure centre.
Positive experience: Good sports centre. My daughter is in stage 1 (swimming) with Alexandra, she is the best teacher. So patient, so playful. Recommended.
Positive experience: Good for fitness! But it’s too expensive after they changed the company as BETTER which is not good. Before it was comfortable and reasonable.
Positive experience: Good fun for swimming. Watch out fir broken lockers though
Positive experience: Go to this Leasure centre every day during the week, fairly good Gym facility, including Swimming pool and showers, very friendly staff, only wishing the sauna and steam facility is reinstated again.
Positive experience: Clean and relatively new leisure centre operated by Better. I used swimming pool with my 2 young grandchildren. Changing rooms a bit chilly.
Fantastic experience: At this time lace my child he really enjoys it and has a lots of fun with his lessons
Positive experience: Decent gym, only misses a good leg press and a lat pulldown machine
Fantastic experience: Greeat place for everyone. Staff are very helpful and polite
Negative experience: If it was possible to leave a zero star I sure will. The staff can be very very rude! I asked a lady at the desk a question about lessons and she said the notice is everywhere. If I had seen your notice I would not have asked. If she does not like the job she can leave so that someone more deserving can take the job. The manager that was called over simply said it was a misunderstanding, clearly dismissing what I said whilst the said colleague sat by the side and smirked. I hope there will be retraining of staff when the new company take over!
Negative experience: Dirty and messy gym. If you are going to workout on the floor or do some yoga or stretching, prepare yourself as you are going to smell stinky floor/carpet. The equipment is rubbish. All the weights are dropped in random places an it seems like no one cares about the health and safety within the gym. Some weights are missing. Workout machine options are limited and old. Floor looks like is never cleaned or renovated for 100 years! Health and safety doesn’t exist in this gym! All the equipment left behind, dropped on the floor etc. If you are going to do workout with smyths machine or deadlifts, prepare yourself to remove all the weights before the actual workout.
Negative experience: Reception staff are not helpful at all. They been very rude and it seems really difficult for them to answer the queries. Didnt even have the courtesy to wish goodmorning.
Positive experience: Basic Gym, old machines. If it upgrades will be good
Negative experience: Old , expensive, you will hardly find parking and the swimming teacher one is perticular has put my duagter off swimming
Negative experience: Booked a Badmington session online. Turned up as a family and was then refused entry by staff stating the centre was closed. Was told by the dismissive staff (sounded pre scipted so others may have also been refused before us) that there was an issue with their online booking system. What a load of shambles. Avoid at all cost!
Negative experience: It’s not gym . It’s running centre . Waste of money
Negative experience: It has good facilities compared to newham. Only problem with parking. It must have good parking space considering there are lots of spaces on campus they are not allowed to park in other spaces on campus if the small parking area is full. That's very bad management
Positive experience: Very limited parking spaces. Always busy counter staffs. Not that friendly. Badminton court is one of the best in London, but regular floor cleaning is required. Good size pool with a separate toddler pool.
Fantastic experience: I used to come for swimming when I was a kid, was great back then but this was some years ago so don't know what it's like now
Fantastic experience: I attend a nutritional class a wonderful experience I feel I'm gaining so much knowledge about healthy eating.
Negative experience: If you are planning to come for badminton here don't come and take membership here. They charge extra for 4pm to 8pm and give that area for other activities and people can book that court to continue 2-3 weeks Also. Then what is the point for charging the money from the members.
Positive experience: Great to have a leisure centre with a dedicated women's gym section. The vibe in that room is awesome.
Negative experience: My sons phone got stolen from the locker and manager told my son its his fault, no compassion no help to look or anything. Won't be going there again, not safe.
Positive experience: The leisure centre is nice but a lot of restitution applied
Fantastic experience: Brilliant place wouldn’t go any where else facilities are good very good workers
Fantastic experience: I started swimming lessons here around 3 months ago and it's been great. My teacher, April, was awesome - she's patient with us, kind, a great communicator and really supportive!
Positive experience: Very good group sessions led by skilled trainers. Unfortuately facility is grubby. Yoga mats are very dirty.
Positive experience: Good place but the only thing I hate is that who ever doesnt know how to swim they have to get out this is not fair
Negative experience: Used to be nice (gym) but now everyone is way too loud shouting and screaming it’s meant to be exercising and it makes you distracted rules should be set
Negative experience: Terrible ventilation system . I think it is not working.… Outside less hotter then inside the centre
Fantastic experience: Something for everyone. Great swim facilities. Nice staff. Check the timetable before coming
Positive experience: This place is worth for the money if you planned to take off peak membership.classes are highly recommended and they have only women gym which are good so far, you might feel overpriced if you’re planning to take peak hour packages.
Fantastic experience: Nice and clean ! Went with my kids for their swimming lessons ! Overall happy with services and arrangement !
Negative experience: Okay gym has to instill a rule for no phone calls inside the fitness suite too distracting
Negative experience: CHECK BEFORE YOU GO SWIMMING!!!! Twice I have been, booked and payed to be turned away pool side. Having to then let my daughter down and take her home crying because nobody informed us. Not acceptable.
Positive experience: Good facilities but so inconvenient and stupid that they changed the weekend closing timing to 3:00 p.m. that's way too early!!!
Positive experience: Like the gym which is well managed with a friendly staff..Mr Bari. He supports by showing & ensuring customers know how to use the apparatus correctly. He is knowledgeable about how to build muscle, tone, & or lose weight. And he is welcoming, a true asset to the East Ham Centre. However, the showers have flies & mould which is awful. Some ppl wear their outdoor shoes in the swimming area, which is not monitored & a health hazard. Cleaning has always been an issue.
Positive experience: The swimming pool is medium sized and is surrounded by a kids pool, jacuzzi and slide. Changing and showering facilities and a disabled chair that lowers into the pool. Supervised pool. Disabled parking and limited parking.
Negative experience: The Gym needs more equipment. There isn't much variety.
Positive experience: Great gym and a reasonable price. The have treadmills, cross trainers, cycling machines and a range of weight machines. Plus a ladies gym, badminton and a swimming pool.
Fantastic experience: I've always liked East Ham. Haven't been there for a long time. Nicely updated.
Negative experience: Female shower and wet changing room always stinks and is in desperate need of proper ventilation. There are ugly fat brown flies chilling on the tiles in the shower blocks. Doors are filthy. Place needs a thorough deep clean every week. Swimming pool is often dirty and the sessions can be of poor quality when they cut up the pool into loads of little sections to accommodate many people/groups/lessons etc. all happening at the same time. Facilities are poor but staff are okay hence two stars.
Negative experience: Was dreading our weekly visit today with it being so hot! Every week its been hot in the sports hall due to the really poor design of the roof. There is no ventilation at all. It's 25° outside and I am willing to bet it was close to 40° inside. Its not safe. Newham council need to do immediate works in there to rectify the problem. Why oh why would you put 50% glass roof coverage with not opening panels for ventilation as a minimum?? Bonkers
Positive experience: Based on their gym membership... it's definitely overpriced and equipment is generally worn out. Particularly the free weights. There are sooo many dumbbells between 25-50kg (majority of which nobody touches so they're sparkling brand new condition) but some sets are even missing between 8-20kg. Not very inviting for beginners or average fitness levels. What gives this place a bit of a boost is the swimming and sports like martial arts which is nice for families. It also has a free crèche service if you sign up to a membership so thats a good bonus for those with small kids.
Positive experience: Well maintained place but difficult to book a slot for racquet game
Positive experience: The gym is always missing weights and mats , otherwise, ok .
Fantastic experience: Good local gym with separate female only section
Positive experience: Nice place for leisure but be aware of theieves as a customers and take your belongs.
Negative experience: Lots of thieves inside the gym and the manager wouldn't help to check the camera of the gym to find who steals the stuffs.. bad experience.
Positive experience: Good place but they still haven’t opened up the kids pool area since Covid
Negative experience: There is car park but gates are closed, when you booking they do not mention about car park there is no parking place around leisure centre i could use the leisure centre, definitely not recommended.
Fantastic experience: Great and cost effective place for the family for Gym, Swimming and other recreational activities
Fantastic experience: Very poor shower rooms and non hygiene area .even hair dryers not dry properly
Negative experience: Gym is always too hot, they have air con but it is barely on - clearly a cost saving exercise. The weights room is always packed with groups of people hogging the machines and the changing rooms are always disgusting
Negative experience: Very terrible service. paid to swim, spent money, but at the reception said that I can not swim because it was not booked. I lost my time
Fantastic experience: My children did the intensive swimming course and they loved it!
Positive experience: Nice place to perform some extra curricular activities like Swimming, Yoga, Aerobics etc.
Positive experience: This is a really great leisure centre, lovely pool, great, friendly staff. Nice and clean on the whole. I haven't used the gym facilities yet but hope to do so in the future. Just a couple of minor points, would be great to have a swimsuit spinner machine to get the excess water out your swimsuit after swimming. Also annoying that you need a token for the locker each time. Nobody really carries cash on them anymore, and it would be great if the token could be reused each visit instead of having to pay every time. Other than that, great facility!
Fantastic experience: Very nice with modern up to date facilities and equipments. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit with the family. Car parking on site is very limited 15 cars or so space only. Staff are friendly and professional too. Would recommend
Fantastic experience: Little bit expensive for 2 hours session. Apart of this very clean location with 3 diferite steam rooms and one dry sauna. Large jacuzzi pool fitted with two powerfull waterfall.
Fantastic experience: Have been a member for 10 years recommend people pay as you go at first and then sign up if your happy.Very competitive rates.
Negative experience: It is 7th March. No covid restrictions anymore but the family splash swimming doesn't include the jacuzzi, waterfalls and the water slide anymore like it used to.. They expect us to pay the same amount though. WHY? This is pure laziness. I keep asking them why the rest of the area isn't open yet and they don't know why. I will post this in all Newham groups to make people aware of it.
Positive experience: Parking spaces are very limited. Why would you have a leisure centre with no parking. Services are okay. Wet changing is not clean. Swimming area is nice
Positive experience: This is a great facility. Super helpful staff, love coming here for an early swim.
Negative experience: Great location, good people, right temperature, reasonable prices BUT….VERY DIRTY!Showers stink, mould is there, and once I saw some flies or other insects flying in the shower... Terrible. My daughter attends swimming lessons, which are great, but I can’t stand the fact how dirty this place is. It’s been like this for years and sadly nothing has changed. It’s agreat local facility , so hopefully they will start looking after it soon.
Fantastic experience: For now this place is dedicated to serve public for Covid 19 vaccinations for weekend. I am one of the volunteer at this centre to help NHS staff to make our community safe. May Allah protect us all Ameen ❤
Fantastic experience: Place is neat and clean compared to other similar leisure, went for swimming pool as well and water quality is also better. Overall good leisure center.
Positive experience: Visited the centre for vaccinations, so cannot discuss it use for leisure. The centre is large and spacious. The place was clean and the staff were pleasant . The basketball hoops were standard size and in good condition. The centre near the town hall and located in the busy town centre. The facilities look decent and it is worth checking for its leisure elements.
Negative experience: Went for my vaccination and wasn't impressed. Staff wearing outdoor coats when taking vaccines out of the fridge and a clinical team lead wearing a long sleeved casual jumper with apron gloves and mask in a clinical area! Bare below the elbow is the gold standard for infection control purposes...shocked as I also work in a vaccination centre. Left without my booster!
Negative experience: Not easy to find unless you know where it is. Went quite a covid booster shot and found the process very confusing.
Negative experience: Apparently due to corona, there are no changing rooms or showers available for gym goers otherwise staff is really nice and ready to help.
Negative experience: Avoid the swim school at all cost! Very unprofessional and they seem to have a problem with customer service not being trained properly and not knowing what they are booking customers in for. The manager of East Ham Leisure Center Customer Service and the Swim School seems to be lacking in his job otherwise coordination and customer service would work better?
Negative experience: Very disappointed with their service’s, We visited on Saturday swimming sessions the males changing room was very dirty and NO HOT water in any Showers, oh they still asking people to buy lockers were all the other place now you can use your £1 coin which is returned after you finished with it but with these guys you have to buy your lockers coin and it’s cash only in cash Societie they never answer their phone either
Positive experience: No parking for any one even if you book your registry wedding here... Parking is big issue in Newham.... Only 2 hours parking behind road but very carefull parking warden keep watching...be safe
Fantastic experience: Kids have been going for swimming for a couple of years and Alexandra has been amazing, friendly and got them to become confident swimmers. She had been the primary reason they have enjoyed swimming and become good. Great place
Fantastic experience: Leisure centre is truly a fun place although there r some struggle for lesson but overall its super fun and very fairly and kid friendly
Negative experience: Absolutely rubbish their management system. Yesterday I booked an appointment for my vaccine but without informing they just shut down their vaccination program. I got to know only when I reached at the center.
Positive experience: Could do with better/more equipments in the women only gym.
Fantastic experience: Very beautiful place the vaccine centre Centre where i took my first and second covid -19 is taking place. I was so impressed this place when i visited there.
Positive experience: I've used the gym and swimming pool there. Decent set of Free weights, machines and treadmills. Swimming pool has a water slide which is very cool. A family pool which is shallow and for the swimmer's the lanes of deep ends.
Positive experience: Open again with social distance in place, sanitising stations for you to feel safe. Currently quite empty, 10 min slots to book before you go in, so stops the place getting overcrowded.
