Our comment from FitFit UK about Ethos Sports Centre:
Ethos Sports Centre, located in London, UK, offers a vibrant environment tailored for students, featuring a diverse range of facilities. It is known for its excellent swimming lessons and clean swimming pool, making it a favorite among students. However, users have reported that the gym can become quite crowded, especially during peak hours, which can hinder one's workout experience.
Highlights:
- Great value for Imperial students with a low membership fee.
- Well-maintained facilities and friendly staff who are willing to assist.
- Variety of activities and classes available, including Pilates and yoga.
- Clean premises and a welcoming atmosphere.
- Access to unique features like a climbing wall.
Areas for Improvement:
- Booking system can be cumbersome, requiring advance reservations for sessions.
- Facilities can feel small and overcrowded at peak times.
- Staff behavior has been noted as inconsistent, with some users experiencing unhelpful or rude interactions.
- Maintenance issues, such as non-functional equipment or water fountains, have also been highlighted.
Overall, while Ethos Sports Centre is well-regarded for its facilities and student-friendly pricing, improvements in the booking process and staff training could enhance the user experience further.
Ethos Sports Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: Imperial College, as a diverse university, should uphold respect for cultural differences. However, the staff managing the sports centre show disrespect for students' cultural backgrounds and often behave rudely. They even make baseless assumptions and deliberately target students.
Positive experience: A bit overpriced for this kind of gym. Obviously 95% are students. The worst is the website and checking/booking system.
Negative experience: Way too small, extremely hard to make bookings
Negative experience: A shame for imperial. The booking system is something I have never seen before in a gym, while some of the staff was kind, others were hostile to me when simply trying to purchase a membership. If there is a time you are able to book a session (which is not always), you are left to workout in a crowded gym with little to no eqipment available, and no bathrooms inside the main gym area. Imperial fix this!!
Negative experience: This gym is an absolute disgrace for an institution such as Imperial. Small, crowded, ill-equipped and as others have mentioned, it requires booking well in advance. Imperial should address this issue urgently.
Negative experience: The booking system is an absolute pain! You have to book for each session and chekin within the time frame. The gym is quite small for the price and almost always full… otherwise staff is very friendly.
Negative experience: A female middle aged rude cleaner verbally abused me in the changing room. Will never go there again.
Negative experience: Why is there no water fountain in the gym? This isn't even legal is it?
Fantastic experience: Sports go brrrrr
Fantastic experience: Best coaches to take swimming lessons.
Negative experience: pool and wet changing rooms are really dirty :( pretty expensive too
Negative experience: It can be okay for a week but then, suddenly, something you were using, call it back training machine, toilet, water fountain, anything, breaks and is under maintenance for a year to two year average.
Fantastic experience: Beat gym in the area.
Positive experience: Clean pool and the staff are happy to help if you forget your keycard
Positive experience: does the job. does get extremely busy even at non-peak hours
Negative experience: Not great, but expensive gym. There is not that many facilities, and now it costs 70£ for external members. What I don’t like about this gym is firstly that you have to book your time slot before and you can’t come whenever. That’s very inconvenient sometimes because if your time slot is at 2pm and you came at 1:57 the system will just not let you in. Still a mystery for me why it’s designed to be so. Secondly, the air con is not working for days in the gym and it’s very hot and suffocating to work out there, noting that they do not have any blinds in the gym and it becomes a greenhouse when it’s sunny outside. Lastly, the stuff is not helpful at all, it disappears quite regularly and you can’t find help when you need.
Negative experience: Staff at the reception are the rudest I've ever encountered, was ingored multiple times and shouted at across reception once when I gave up waiting. Please put your staff on a customer service course.
Negative experience: The blonde lady teaches Tuesday Vinyasa Flow Yoga is so mean.
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out. Nice pool!
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities for the Imperial University students.
Fantastic experience: Very nice Very lively, full of young students (obviously) which made me feel younger, The place has all you need for fitness Staff are wonderful
Fantastic experience: Clean and modern
Fantastic experience: Lots of facilities for just £30 a year as an imperial student.
Positive experience: Gym is decent and provides you with the necessary equipment to get a good workout. However when it is peak hours it's almost impossible to get a decent workout since the gym is a bit small. Additionally some of the staff can be a bit rude at times but not terribly offensive.
Fantastic experience: A safe place most especially for kids Staff are always around ready to help Clean place
Negative experience: hours are not updated, still needs silly booking system
Fantastic experience:
Positive experience: Very affordable for staff or students. They did an excellent job during Covid times by giving a spray bottle to each user. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The slight negative would be that it can get very busy as it's a small gym. Also, the vending machines should not be stocked with chocolates. A fitness center like Ethos should be stocking high protein drinks or bars.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful center, conveniently located
Fantastic experience: a place to go to again
Fantastic experience: Great sport centre and membership is extremely cheap!
Fantastic experience: The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Very positive first visit.
Positive experience: Nice pool and ok staff. I’ve been going there for over 5 years and before they had no security system which I found much more convenient, however it’s still ok. There is a sauna and a hot tub and nice changing rooms with several showers and private areas. I recommend children to join the club there it looks quite good and to anyway in the area.
Negative experience: Bad for weight lifters, sessions last a maximum of 45 minutes which means you can't do a full workout and will always be cut short. Also can't double book meaning you're always capped at 45 minute workouts which is not enough for anyone above beginner. Recommend a different gym if anything above beginner tbh. Staff are typically nice but some won't allow even an extra 5 minute early start as you try to squeeze a 50 minute workout instead of 45 minute even though the gym is ready for the next session.
Fantastic experience: Part of imperial college athletics department with limited off peak memberships for those that are not students or staff. It has reopened and it works! Focus on hygiene and social distancing with gym and class registration required and I was very pleased. Been a member for years and always happy with facilities and pleasant staff attendants.
Negative experience: There was a time before pandemic I used to go to this ethos gym, they are still living in pandemic , still wants us to pay £35 pounds a month for 2x 40 minutes booking sessions, maximum, most of the times slots are pre booked , I rather pay a gym that I can go whenever I have time and energy. My blood boils when I saw their failure of booking system when they started penalties.but still not ditched this pathetic booking system. I hope someone can get through to them , while agree with me and tell them " Wake up ! Remove this booking gyms slots , booking should be only done for classes and other activities . Covid is over. Do not use this pathetic excuse that it works better . it only works better when you don't care about number of the people coming to gym and giving you less work to do. Period
Positive experience: Btech
Fantastic experience: Private pool, only for Imperial students.
Fantastic experience: Good good
Fantastic experience: Great place for fitness nice professional staff
Fantastic experience: Great management and clean venue.
Fantastic experience: Kids camp during Summer holidays
Negative experience: A gym with toilets and water fountains that do not work for weeks. Would recommend if you’re a camel.
Fantastic experience: Dedication for sweat
Fantastic experience: Amazing facilities!!!
Positive experience: too crowd
Positive experience: Inconvenient opening hours, but good value for students!
Positive experience: Really clean and modern. It is just not that big to support everyone, it is very crowded.
Fantastic experience: Pilates classes are very good.
Fantastic experience: I love this gym. It's well equipped and there's a friendly atmosphere.
Positive experience: Well equipped, but just a tad overcrowded.
Positive experience: Staff was very helpful and the place was really clean. The gym and the changing rooms are a bit cramped though.
Positive experience: Showers need better ventilation and gym is crowded, but facilities are of a high standard for a university gym
Positive experience: Quite crowded in afternoon and evening.
Positive experience: Often quite busy but has rather good facilities.
Fantastic experience: Great
Positive experience: Un buen gimnasio, aunque la sala de pesas se queda corta a veces porque tiene demasiada gente. Las máquinas son nuevas y están en buen estado, salvo alguna excepción. Para mi gusto, hace mucho calor dentro.
Fantastic experience: Nice gym
Positive experience: This is fine; but unless you're a student, the price is outrageous
Fantastic experience: Nice gym with a full range of equipment. Gets pretty crowded on weekday evenings though.
Positive experience: Decent facilities but usually crowded
Negative experience: Not enough space for a proper workout, and especially difficult to find a spot for lifting during peak hours.
Fantastic experience: High tech sports facilities
Positive experience: The gym is good. Showers are rubbish. They work but they spray the walls and leave a gap in the middle. You end up squished in a corner trying to get some water...
Positive experience: Excelente apoio à prática desportiva.
Fantastic experience: Nice
Negative experience: Super busy, unhelpful staff
Fantastic experience: Very well equiped, but can get very crowded at times.
Fantastic experience: expensive
Fantastic experience: The gym has new equipment which is great however, some of the old machines were quite good and they haven't been replaced with an equivalent for instance the abdominals machine.
Negative experience: Unfriendly front desk staff and poor customer service. The timing for a class had been wrong on their booking page for 3 months. When I showed up on time according to their own website, they rebooked me onto the same class the following week but refused to provide any compensation or apology for wasting my time, instead referring me to T&Cs and policies again and again. A friendly gesture would have made all the difference.
Positive experience: Everything you can ask for as a student; great pricing; has all material that is really needed in a gym; very well organised activities; only downpoint is the capacity of the gym
Negative experience: Ridiculous times, rude front desk staff, lied about the prices, gym is so crowded, loud and very bad air conditioning system!
Negative experience: The gym area itself is not bad, but lacks space and needs more equipment (more squat racks and benches for bench press) more space to deadlift also. The opening times are often ridiculous. For example the weight lifting area is off limits to students from 9am-5pm every day... If you lift weights you're better off paying a bit extra and going to a proper gym
Negative experience: unless working for imperial avoid it, old small place
Fantastic experience: Good place
Positive experience: Ok facilities, can get very busy.
Positive experience: I like Ethos but they could benefit from a better air conditioning system in the sports hall and the studio rooms. In the studio they often have a fan which doesn't really do much. The facilities generally could be improved - often the hand dryer and several of the lockers don't work.
Positive experience: Packed with imperial virgin men
Negative experience: Minimal machines and weights. Most of the free weights are broken / falling a part meaning there is not accurate way to know how much you are actually lifting. Bars are bent on the bench and squat rack. And the actual free weights area is so small that it become dangerous during peak hours.
Negative experience: Commuted here after work to create a membership. The woman at the front desk cheerfully told me that she can't create memberships and proceeded to talk to her friends while I tried to create one on my phone. When I explained that I couldn’t verify my email address from a non-Imperial computer she wished me luck and sent me off. The gym might be ok but I never want to go back there. £40 is a lot of money for a student and I don’t want to give it to a gym that is so dismissive of its first-time visitors.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities
Negative experience: Unhelpful staff and too expensive for what it's worth.
Fantastic experience: Good place recommend for college students, squash courts need improvement
Positive experience: You can work out everything in the gym. The swimming pool is not so big. Support to many sports.
Negative experience: Not a good gym. Poor equipment, no floor space to do exercises like walking dumbbell lunges, very cramped. Not even any regular plates so any kind of pulls from the floor are impossible.
Positive experience: Good classes
Negative experience: Large building but the gym floor is lackluster
Positive experience: Piscine de 25m, salle de muscu/fitness, de nombreux terrains de sports et un mur d'escalade.
Positive experience: The facilities are great but shared between 15,000 students - very overcrowded!
Negative experience: Small and crowded.
Fantastic experience: Relatively new facilities but can't bring non Imperial guests for everything
Positive experience: Too crowded sometimes
Negative experience: Unless you're part of Imperial, avoid at all costs. For the price they're charging, maintenance of essential facilities take way too long. The changing room has been out for a week and still it's out of order, not to mention the constant lack of hot water.
Fantastic experience: State of the art
Positive experience: Rather small and busy, but for an Imperial students it's one of the best ways to get some exercise. But would probably not recommended to people who are not a part of the college or an organised school group/trip
Positive experience: It's small but if you're an Imperial student it's only £40 for your entire time here! It's the best bargain you could ask for and includes the pool!
Positive experience: Small but well maintained sports and gym facility belonging to Imperial College. Outstanding feature is the staff, who are uniformly very good.
Fantastic experience: Staff are polite, and the building and equipment quality is good. The gym is often quite busy.
Negative experience: If you are part of Imperial at South Ken, this is handy and easy. If it is not the case, simply avoid so you do not pay to use dirty equipment and be subjected to an unprofessional management. It is like going to a gym run by kindergarten kids. The staff changes very often, so maybe it is just a matter of time before an adult is hired.
