Nuffield Health Chesterfield Fitness & Wellbeing Gym

Negative experience: Must say Nuffield I’m not impressed with your exercise program. If you are not on line at 7am to book a class 8 days in advance, you have very little chance of getting the class you want. Very disappointing and a waste of money. Too many members for few classes available. Thumbs down from me.

Negative experience: Not a high quality gym at all. The equipment is 30 years old and they have no intention of replacing it, which is totally unacceptable for Nuffield, not even for a tatty city gym behind the chip shop. A lack of competition locally is the only reason they can keep going and yet be so dated and rough round the edges. Disgraceful.

Positive experience: The equipment is desperately in need of being updated. But does have a great timetable of classes

Negative experience: Why can't you give no stars? I had been a member for 6 years. The class trainers have been very good. However, when I tried to get help with a new condition I got no help and no return calls (as promised), despite 5 requests including with the head PT. I would have been paying extra for the PT over and above membership. My condition deteriorated and I was unable to drive. I rang head office to cancel. They told me to ring the branch. I did sbd left a message. I continued to pay for 2 further months, so they had 2 months notice as I did not use the gym within that period. They then started sending me debt letters. I again contact the gym. They wanted medical letters to prove I could cancel! They have no right. I refused. They have now sold what they purport to be my "debt" as they are after another month from me! Well, I've told the collection heavies they can try to get it from my estate when I'm dead. Don't sign a contract with this gym. It is very dated now and they don't keep up with maintaining it as it should be. Management is really lacking in making people feel welcome.

Fantastic experience: Well I have not had my induction yet but I would just like to comment and say how wonderful Lauren is. I visited the gym to join, I was very nervous and Lauren was so good to me. I phoned up today to ask a question and again Lauren was extremely helpful. Her customer service is second to none. If all the team are like Lauren then I look forward to being a member. Thank you Lauren for being kind. Paula

Positive experience: On and off over the last 15 years i have enjoyed 3 month memberships of Nuffield Gym Chesterfield which allows me to get back into shape in the months that i consider it to be too dark and dangerous to do street running-mainly December through to the end of Febraury. I have also had memberships of other (much cheaper) gyms in Chesterfield during this time so thought it would be good to weigh up the pros and cons of Nuffield compared to others. Starting with the negatives first: 1.The exercise floor area on the 1st floor is considerably smaller than other gyms and therefore has less equipment. 2.The number of treadmills has decreased since my regular memberships of 2010-2016 and on manual settings some of the buttons on the handlebars of the bikes do not operate 3.The two shaving bowls wash basins next to the showers are set too far from the mirror,forcing the user to lean over to see clearly,and i was never able to get a good temperature from the water 4."Family time" hours allocated to the swimming pool.In all fairness the hours are indicated on a pinned up schedule in the changing room area but,having forgotten this it was a shock for me on re-joining to find children walking around between the lockers and generally making lots of noise (which is what kids do in all fairness) 5.Occasional blocking of the toilet.I feel bad having to go to staff to tell them.If each of the two toilets had a brush in one corner at least i could have sorted it out myself. 6.No "starter pack" when rejoining.This was pretty much a booklet Nuffield would give you explaining what you get for your money,which would include free monthly health MOTs but everything has switched over to using Apps and its just another set of passwords you have to remember. And now for the positives: 1.Good quality Life Fitness treadmills with speed interval setting-could not match this at the cheaper gyms 2.Good quality shower room area with 8 cubicals,good temperature controls and large shower head rotation,soap dispensers always kept stocked up,and the water keeps flowing uninteruoted-could not match at the cheaper gyms 3.Spacious changing rooms with 2 levels of lockers all in good condition-could not match at the cheaper gyms 4.Lockers use the membership card as part of the locking system so you dont have to bring in a padlock,but each lockers has a coat rail,hanger and hook for rucksacks-could not match at cheaper gyms 5.The pool is excellent,and if like myself you are not keen on children,you just need to avoid the Family Swim and Classes shown on the schedule in the changing room.The steam room & sauna are an extra bonus if a little on the small side-could not match at cheaper gyms and really this is where you gain the most for your money 6.The 1st floor exercise area never really feels busy,though i bemoan the reduction of the number of treadmills i found if they were ever fully occupied i just used one of the bikes or cross trainers for half an hour then 2 or 3 would then become available 7.There is a lovely ambience when you walk into the entrance area reception and through the cafe seated area,and though im not one for hanging around after exercising i do appriciate that others might want to stop for a chat & a bite to eat 8.The option to pay membership in 3 month blocks has always worked out well for me,i have never seen the point of gym membership during the summer months because that is when im out and about and doing things.This gives Nuffield an advantage since most cheaper gyms only offer a rolling 12 month Direct Debit

Fantastic experience: Excellent Gym! I don't live in the area but my local Nuffield is the same tier as this one and wow, what a difference. People of Chesterfield, you are lucky to have this gym as it is far, far better than my local gym which is the same tier but much more money per month due to being close to London. Changing rooms all really clean and tidy. They can get quite congested before and after classes, but not much can be done about that. A good range of equpment, nothing out of order on my visit on 29/8/23. Really friendly and helpful staff as well as really friendly members. Your members put weights back when they are done which is a refreshing change to see. A very positive experience, excellent cafe area which was very busy. I would highly recommend. Keep up the great work.

Fantastic experience: Very clean. Lovely, helpful and friendly staff.

Negative experience: Closed until 8am on bank holidays no good for working people that. Closed the hot room off so only can use sauna and gym £50 a month for that is awfully a lot. They don’t answer phone lines when you need to speak to them been calling none stop for ages. Think I’ll be cancelling membership at this.

Negative experience: If orange, laminated cards, overpriced membership and machines that are out of order is your thing, this is the gym for you… Nice staff though.

Fantastic experience: 1 day free trial to check out the equipment it seems a nice atmosphere within the gym and polite working staff team I hope to join up in the summer

Fantastic experience: I have been at the gym for 2 years now so I have a good idea about the place. I have a PT, Tom, he is absolutely outstanding and great to know and incredibly knowledgeable I believe the management are not on top of things, I would consider them quite slack tbf. I find the welcome when you walk in very hit and Miss to be honest, although Donna is always very pleasant and positive Lots to get better at Nuffield Chesterfield in a very competitive market place

Positive experience: Good gym, could do with a refresh and some better free weights equipment. There are cheaper options in Chesterfield with better equipment, but if you want a relaxed atmosphere and a good pool then this is your only option

Negative experience: With the price being so high you'd think it would be a good quality gym. Really needs updating the majority of the equipment must be from the 90s. Opening times are rubbish 8pm at the weekend is so early to close. The pool is nice but with the amount of classes and kids classes on you will struggle to find a time you can use it. Staff are nice which really is the only reason it isn't a 1 star review

Fantastic experience: I joined due my medical situation and I have found nuffield health to be a breath of fresh air the staff are not only very qualified but are very considerate,understanding,and a pleasure to work out with.i find it a pleasure to go and carry out the exercises that are required in a very friendly atmosphere which are concluded with a swim in a very pleasant pool,followed by nice shower all immaculately clean.

Negative experience: The staff are friendly. The gym and pool are nice and clean. Terrible and tiny weights area. The equipment is old and tired at best. Some just doesn't work properly anymore e.g. the 1 smith machine is rusty and doesn't move smoothly. I changed from GymGroup to Nuffiled to use the pool but the Gymgroup equipment is infinitely better at a fraction of the price. Very disappointed with Nuffield but locked in now for 10 more months.

Fantastic experience: Had a lovely few hours with Georgia having a facial and nails pre Daughters wedding. Feel amazing! Thank you Georgia, you are the best

Negative experience: Staff are friendly and the gym is clean however the equipment is unfortunately old and there is without fail always multiple machines out of order. Abductor, leg press, assisted pull up machine, several treadmills just to name a few. For the price you pay for the membership this is really disappointing.

Fantastic experience: Female receptionist was great, super friendly and welcoming, can’t say the same about the male staff. However gym facilities are great for a tier 3 gym, better then some of the tier 1 gyms in London.

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym, staff are amazing and supportive always on hand to help. Great bunch of gym people who are encouraging and supportive. Very positive environment to workout. Love this place.

Fantastic experience: Recently joined this gym from being at the smaller gym across the way. Staff have been lovely & helpful, saying hello upon entry. Facilities, equipment, swimming pool & processes are really user friendly and comfortable - Not too busy either which is a massive bonus! Would recommend :)

Fantastic experience: I've moved around a lot over the last 5/6 years using different gyms in different locations. This is the nicest one that I've been a member of (I've been to Virgin, David Lloyd & Pure). Where the equipment is perhaps not the newest, I've been really impressed with both the amount and variety of. The pool is beautifully clean and always a good temperature. There are loads of excellent classes; staff are incredibly friendly & helpful and offer good rates on personal trainers. As I'm now settled in Chesterfield, I intend to be a member for a very long time. Great atmosphere all round :)

Negative experience: Have been a member for over 5 years and the facilities have steadily got worse in that time. The changing rooms are usually filthy, the are regular issues with things being Out of Order/Broken - Steam Room for weeks (now mended) and the poolside shower has been broken for over 3 weeks. Not good OR hygienic. Wish there was a decent alternative in Chesterfield (David Lloyd/Bannatyne etc...) as this might make Nuffield raise their game. Not cheap and (at the moment) NOT good value!

Negative experience: Terrible gym. . . They expect a premium price of at least £37 a month yet no touch screen TVs on the machines. . . Still the outdated button models you get in the pure gyms . Weight machine area is tiny and out dated. .. it's all just a time capsule . . When I went the steam room was out of order and the shower area was filthy. . .. definalty not worth the premium - for lack of premium features

Negative experience: Nice and clean. Free weights are very poor but has loads of cardio equipment. Has a SWIMMING POOL!! It's expensive for this area.

Fantastic experience: I really enjoy going to this gym every morning. Lovely staff and a good range of facilities. I only wish they would put nice, relaxing, chill out music on in the locker room. Then it would be perfect.

Positive experience: Trying to cancel your membership here is harder than trying to solve the Davinci code

Positive experience: Clean and nice, modern equipment, swimming pool, steam room, sauna. Busy at the peak times, yet moderate outside those. Opens early and closes late, additional benefit. It is not the cheapest, yet was worth it. Staff always friendly, smiling and very helpful. One star less for the way the management dealt with complaint.

Positive experience: Started going here a few weeks ago, and im not really sure why it is the most expensive gym in the area, some of the machines are very rusty! and this is very off putting! They really do to be changed out with newer ones. The changing rooms look like there falling apart, and i feel that it could do with some TLC the ceiling tiles are almost black! . The staff on the other hand are very friendly and always seem to have a smile on there face which makes this gym one of the more comfortable places to go. I just expected more for how much it costs.
