Our comment from FitFit UK about Bannatyne Health Club:

Bannatyne Health Club in Glasgow is a gym that offers a range of fitness facilities, including a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and extensive gym equipment. Despite its potential, many users have expressed concerns regarding maintenance and cleanliness. Key highlights include:

  • Friendly Staff: The staff have received positive feedback for their helpfulness and cheerfulness, creating a welcoming atmosphere for members.
  • Variety of Classes: The club provides a good selection of fitness classes which many members appreciate.
  • Equipment Access: Generally, members report that the gym is not overly crowded, allowing for easier access to cardio and weight training equipment.

However, there are notable areas for improvement:

  • Maintenance Issues: Several users have pointed out the need for repairs throughout the facility, particularly in changing rooms and leisure areas where cleanliness is a concern.
  • Old Equipment: Some equipment appears dated and is frequently out of order, causing frustration among regular attendees.
  • Hygiene Concerns: Many reviews indicate that the cleanliness of the pool, sauna, and steam room does not meet expectations, which is a significant drawback for potential members.

In summary, while Bannatyne Health Club has friendly staff and a decent range of classes, prospective members should be aware of the ongoing maintenance and cleanliness issues that have been raised in many reviews. Improvements in these areas could significantly enhance the experience and justify the membership fees.

Negative experience: In need of a lot of repairs. POOL, STEAM RM, JACUZZI MISSING TILES.(HEALTH & SAFETY RISK) MALE CHANGING /LOCKER RM DOORS HANGING OFF,LOCKS NOT WORKING, ALSO DRAINAGE SMELL. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE !!!!

Ryan Rennie 8 months ago

Negative experience: Entire building is absolutely filthy and completely run down, there are more broken tiles around the pool area than in tact ones, changing rooms showers stunk of urine, and not to mention the swim suit spinner drains straight into the shower cubicles…disgusting!!!

Jason Morton 8 months ago

Negative experience: Place is disgusting. Run down and dirty. Changing rooms, showers, pool and ‘spa’ are filthy. No doubt I’ll get the same response as everyone else from ‘the manager’ who clearly doesn’t care since nothing has changed in the reviews for the past year. Embarrassing. Make sure you sign up online so you have distance selling rights and can cancel within 14 days like me. Whatever you do - do not sign up on the premises as you lose this right. You’ll thank me later.

Clare Phillips 8 months ago

Positive experience: The staff are friendly enough but never see anyone at the gym to help you with anything ! Down stairs at the so called relaxing area is far from relaxing foul language being used in steam and sauna needless to say the place is so needing repair and a total renovation! This place is only surviving as there is no competition in surrounding area .. I’ll be off when something better comes along . Not worth the money at all

Lauren Gallagher 10 months ago

Negative experience: Not impressed so far, showed up for the first time and was a huge thing where they couldn't find my account so we stood at the front desk for at least 20 mins, was eventually let in and was eventually resolved but the staff didn't seem trained very well because only one person who wasn't there could apparently help. My husband then shows up this morning for a class and the gym wasn't even open because the key holder didn't show up. As mentioned in several other reviews, you'd expect more considering the price. They clearly need more senior management and better staff training. We've reached out to management so hopefully they'll be in touch soon.

Negative experience: Swimming pool, Sauna and steam room are manky. Got an ear infection from this place, frequent mystery fluff all over the place. I don't think the pensioners shower properly, then everyone thinks it's acceptable to go straight from the sauna into the pool. They might as well be peeing in it. Straight bit of 2 by 4 beside the jacuzzi is jumping with fleas. Gym is fine but honestly that sauna is manky. Cleaning it during business hours is bad enough, not cleaning it properly is worse. Not worth the money.

Dunc 11 months ago

Negative experience: Honestly the worst gym I have ever been to in Glasgow. Signed up as it was walking distance and thought it must be fine it is a Bannatyne. Only redeeming thing is the pool is consistently open. Changing rooms are run down and outdated, the gym area is needing improved and there is always something broken, (water fountain, the entrance barriers, the jacuzzi) and when it is it is weeks/months before it is fixed. When you are paying over £50 a month you expect it to be better than other places and it is not. JD gyms, Glasgow Club, The Gym I have been members of before when living in other areas of Glasgow and are all far better than here for half the price. Staff are lovely but this needs a big improvement and a full renovation to be worth the money but I don’t think they will do anything as there is countless reviews of this place saying similar things that I wish I had looked at before I joined and I should have cancelled my membership long ago.

Negative experience: Certainly not worth the price. The equipment is worse than you'd find at any budget competitor and machines are frequently out of order for extended periods of time. Staff are friendly but the gym floor is rarely staffed, so good luck if you have an accident or need help with anything. The gym itself is fairly small for the number of members so expect big waits around peak times. The sauna/steam room have a proper lad culture which might be off-putting to many people especially women going by themselves - probably why the sauna is male-dominated. For £50+ a month I'd advise against this place, it does not feel at all premium and doesn't warrant the expense.

Darrell Gough 1 year ago

Positive experience: Visited as a guest with view to rejoining after being away for a number of years however the place is a bit run down with old equipment, a failing boiler and half a working jacuzzi.

june bend 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Went just to make some enquiries. Staff were so helpful and friendly.

Jamie Allison 1 year ago

Negative experience: Changing rooms, sauna/steam and jacuzzi need updated as well as the gym ceiling.

Carolyn Reilly 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere, nice staff. Classes are fab!

David Buchanan 1 year ago

Negative experience: Went for a tour around the site today. Staff were friendly but otherwise the place is run down and tatty. For the prices they are charging there are much better value gyms in the area. Also I noticed that the clients were all a bit older and that the classes catered for that demographic. So don’t go if you are expecting cool Les Mills classes aimed at younger clients.

Sarah Edwards 1 year ago

Positive experience: The staff are generally nice, I really like some of the classes. Booking into a class is easy enough. The showers in the changing room are a wee bit dated. Some of the equipment could do with an update but they do keep on top of issues with equipment. For the most part the equipment is fine.

Negative experience: Good gym but needs a lot of work jacuzzi half working showers a disgrace very poor and needs refurbishment its what's making me think of leaving not clean

Heather Blackley 1 year ago

Negative experience: Wrote to Head office in Darlington to give the required 30 days and paid 1 month in advance as living in spain for a year. I am now being hounded by debt collectors by text messages. Manager been in contact with my husband and has tried her best to help but now says she's unable to help. My husband has given my Spanish address but still being messaged on my uk phone in spain. Apparently they are known for this I even said I would rejoin on my return Be VERY CAREFUL with this company I've done everything required it's a disgrace!!!!!!!

Jane Muir 2 years ago

Negative experience: I feel I need to post this so people don’t waste their money - especially woman. Run down and dirty changing facilities that are smelly. Creepy vibe at swimming pool - too many men hanging about in sauna, steam room and jacuzzi during the day staring at the women in the pool. Staff at reception either not present or huddle with other staff talking, completely ignoring customers coming in - not even a smile. Disappointing old stereotype of crowds of men hanging about on gym floor - no staff to be seen. I have been in a lot of gyms and this is the saddest one I have seen. Definitely not worth the money and I won’t be renewing my limited contract.

Negative experience: Great potential but very tired and management have no interest in making repairs or generating member involvement. Desperately needs competition!

David Maguire 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: The gym is great. I've had to use a few other bannatyne gyms before and the gym was smaller, but the stepps one is great

Bobby Brown 2 years ago

Positive experience: Decent gym, decent size and friendly staff. The gym is usually never too busy so there is always enough equipment to use in the Cardio section without having to wait around etc although wish they would get another stepping machine legit have one and always hate to use it incase someone is waiting to get on it. The sauna is decent although I wish they had a quiet area dark area like bigger sauna, and no not like that! 1) I’m there struggling to stay in the room struggling to catch a breathe and you have these older 60+ guys trying to talk to you and 2) when your body is currently pretty out of shape you don’t want to be seen. Overall though would recommend this gym and the PT’s look decent dunno too much about them but look approachable and from seeing them PT they seem pretty good. Maybe more classes, especially Kettlebell classes and more HIT classes

Negative experience: Few Staff members are not very nice at all. They were nice when “ i signed up “ as a membership at first. No one wants a bad experience at gym. Not worth for the money. Change membership soon.

William Ross 3 years ago

Negative experience: A gym with no internet in 2022 , its so dirty you need to take a another shower when you get home. Saying that, a lot of the clientele wont know any better. A once affluent , clean and amazing gym ruined.

John Archer 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Nice place. Tidy and clean. Has a good range of equipment and things to do. Friendly staff.

Ross Brimer 3 years ago

Negative experience: Management should be ashamed. The spa is disgusting, horrible smells, a look warm sauna that smelt so bad I couldn't even sit in it. Jacuzzi slightly warm and jets barely work. Steam room was hot and steamy but in dire need of a renovation. Yes the place is run down but that doesn't mean it should be dirty and unclean. Avoid this bannatynes like the plague. Normally use Dunfermline, falkirk and edinburgh new Craighall - all immaculate and all have different advantages - Dunfermline, huge gym - Falkirk, nice spa area Edinburgh, very modern spa area. I don't know what stepps bannatynes has going for it. Friendly staff maybe? That dont seem to care about upkeeping the place I feel sorry for those who are members of this gym. I won't be back which is disappointing as I have a job just round the corner...

John Armstrong 3 years ago

Negative experience: Bannatyne stepps is one of the most expensive gyms in the area. For the membership you should expect much more. I have been a member for 5 years and while covid has interrupted this, I have been regularly attending until this week, where i cancelled for a better deal at another gym. On arrival at the gym, you are met with staff who look surprised by your arrival, you access the club through their turnstiles (if they are working, they don't always and this comes as a surprise to the staff) into a dated corridor to equally dated and dirty changing area, where you will find some lockers working, some not, these are activated by your wristband. If it works, if not, try another. At Bannatynes Stepps, they don't have the concept of telling members if things are not functioning, they let them find out themselves. The shower facilities are akin to those you will find in a £20 a night seaside B&B, if they work at all, they are grotty, have an odd aroma and are absolutely filthy, I know of 4 people who have contracted fungal bacteria infection from the showers. The poolside area, the area where Bannatynes sells its product, is, well, dated, filthy and in need of general repairs, the lighting is very poor, so unless you intend on swimming around mid-day, prepare yourself for some ambient light swimming. If you are a female member, I would advise you not to use this facility on your own. The regular users of the sauna, will rank you and critique you. We attended the family changing area a number of times, it was as equally as dirty as the male & female changing and also, in need of more than a few repairs. Sliding door access to family changing area, doesn't lock and the wood frames, have rotted away. The main gym is accessed by a stairway, with carpets that are either patchy or loose, watch your footing. You are met with with the photographs of the "management team" who are largely anonymous in the club. I've spoke with the manager a number of times, he looks largely disinterested in feedback and doesn't take any feedback on board. The gym itself, is full of reasonable equipment, you get the impression it caters for retirees, more than anyone else, the CV equipment is functional, some do not have linked media, but there are TVs mounted on the walls, showing freeview channels, or nothing at all. You won't get sport being shown like other, cheaper, better managed, maintained gyms. There is a well equipped free weights area, which has been invested in recently, any investment in this gym is rare. I've been a member for 3 years and the weights section and climbing frame are the only additions. Maintenance of the gym area is, as with the rest of the gym very poor, if a machine becomes faulty, it is weeks or months to be repaired, if at all. There is a maintenance manager on site, who appears to be there to chat to younger members of staff only. In comparison with cheaper, better managed and maintained gyms, the lighting is dim, I'd say very poor, it's a feature across the gym that lights go out but never come back on. Some windows are nailed shut, not ideal, but is inline with other part of the experience. There are a number of personal trainers to help you with your fitness journey, both self employed and bannatyne employed. A couple of the self employed PTs, treat the gym like it is their own, so be prepared for one or two of them to take over an area for their own benefit, even if you are using it at the time, seems they do have the upper hand in the gym. I have never seen the gym manager in the gym and I have never seen the general manager, out of his wee office. In summary, don't waste your money.

Positive experience: Really like the club but when a piece of Technogym equipment breaks it takes months to get fixed. Record so far was around 4 months for straps on the rowing machines however the currently broken shoulder press machine is heading for 2 months out of order. Embarrassing for both Bannatynes and Technogym I would have thought.

Sabina Borcea 7 years ago

Negative experience: Parents taking kids to Swim Stars independent class from the gym facility are being forced to pay Bannantyne gym membership to be able to bring the child in. A very bad mark on this policy and frankly making a lot of parents unhappy. Nevertheless why should we be targeted to pay in for the financial losses that the gym may have. Shameful

David Taylor 7 years ago

Fantastic experience: A fantastic place for food, training and some R&R. Kitted out with a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and swiming pool the spa area is definetly worth a visit. The place can be busy as there are kids swimming lessons but the amazing gym is worth it. Well designed and packed with free weights, resistance machinery aswell as an ensemble of cardio equipment. You can even get a physio to work away your achs and pains while sipping on a freshly brewed Starbucks coffee. Some improvents could be made such as the car park and the wi-fi.
