The Grand Hotel, located in the beautiful Torquay, United Kingdom, offers a unique blend of traditional charm and stunning seaside views. Guests have praised the hotel for its superb staff, who provide friendly and attentive service. **Positive Highlights:**

  • Excellent location with breathtaking views across the bay.
  • Comfortable rooms, many with sea views, and a spacious lobby area.
  • Amazing food service, particularly noted for breakfast and evening meals.
  • Indoor and outdoor swimming pools available for guests.
  • Conveniently located next to the railway station, ideal for travelers.
  • Some rooms have been newly updated and are stylishly decorated.
  • Delicious cream tea is highly recommended.

**Suggestions for Improvement:**

  • Some areas of the hotel are in need of updating and refurbishment, including the rooms and pool facilities.
  • Inconsistent restaurant service has been noted, with some guests experiencing slow order taking and issues with food presentation.
  • Parking arrangements can be tricky; guests should be aware of the additional charges.
  • Noise from neighboring rooms and disturbances from staff during cleaning hours can disrupt the peaceful atmosphere.

Overall, while the Grand Hotel holds onto its historic grandeur, enhancements could elevate the experience, but it remains a place worth visiting for its charm and beautiful surroundings.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely superb in all areas. Maybe not what would be called a modern hotel, but all the better for it. Lovely staff, rooms spotless, fantastic views across the bay and easy parking. Highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: Excellent food and service on New Year's Eve thank you for a cracking evening

Positive experience: Needs a bit of an update but was good. The bathroom floor needed a clean up which they did straight away after asking them . Some of the staff were slow on taking orders, in the restaurant Sent an email saying one of the guests was able to have dairy. Told them again when ordering the cream tea. Then it changed but they changed the sandwich for both when the other person was looking forward to that sandwich of salon and cream cheese. Was told it was brie cheese. But we both didn't think it was. Would go back again

Fantastic experience: We had a budget room but some have sea views but more expensive. Position is good too get to most places within walking distance. No 22 bus stops outside and will get you to most attractions in Torquay and Paignton. Nice bar and pool terrace.

Fantastic experience: I only went in for coffee as we were on the midland pullman and that was the destination. It must have been very grand in its day but the service and the view was wonderful.

Fantastic experience: We enjoyed staying in the Grand Hotel! Two swimming pools , we were lucky with weather, so we're indoor swimming pool only once , everything was great! We loved our room with sea view, it was cleaned every day. The staff around the hotel were great, thanks very much to all of them!!!

Positive experience: Grand entrance, lobby and bar. The staff are friendly. The pool is nice. The rooms however are worn and a bit rubbish. We had the window as open as it would go (which isn't much) with a sea view room... Zero air! It wasn't until the next day we were told there was a fan hidden away beside the safe. It didn't change anything though; it was still unbearably stuffy and hard to sleep. The bed and bedsheets were both very budget and the furniture in the room didn't quite fit, size-wise. Location is both great and not great at the same time. It's a wonderful area but if you want to go to anything in Torquay you have to walk to the main harbour area because there's nothing where the hotel is. It's a short and pleasant walk, but it's a walk.

Negative experience: Stayed for 1 night? room was OK but some of the electric plugs were not working, could do with a new coat of paint? car parking unusal and expensive. Breakfast was not much better. Sorry but not a good stay.

Fantastic experience: A very comfortable hotel situated on a slight incline from the coast, adjacent to Torquay railway station. The staff are very attentive and obviously well trained. I swam in the outdoor swimming pool (great temperature even on a drizzly day)! I stayed in a comfortable twin at the back of the hotel. Although the room overlooked the station, noise from trains was negligible (we did have windows open)! Toquay centre and harbour area was walkable, but I took a bus (2 stops) as was visiting with my elderly mother.

Positive experience: Hotel needs refreshing throughout. Male & Female changing rooms particularly need updating including indoor pool area. However, the outdoor swimming pool is one of the warmest I've probably ever swam in. Restaurant and bar areas are o.k. but bar is open to non residents, so can get rowdy. Staff on the other hand are polite and helpful.

Fantastic experience: I visited The Grand Hotel with my family for afternoon tea. We were impressed with the function room, the efficient and courteous service of the Scottish lady, her assistants, and very much enjoyed the tea. The views of the sea & Torquay were wonderful. We also had the pleasure in meeting the new owner, and we wish him well in his venture.

Positive experience: Really handy for rail travelers ( bus stop basically outside across the street ). Nice reception, smart bar, very smart dining room. Two star rooms..... However, it's comfortable, black out curtains and a great base with impressive scale. The staff are great and do whatever they can to sort you out.

Positive experience: I wouldn’t say GRAND but it did us well for our weekend away! Stayed here because we wanted to be by the seafront, thought we’d give here a try rather than our regulars. Pros and cons: Positives: •Staff were amazing, very friendly. •Bar/lounge area is really nice, along with staff. •Lattes are beautiful, absolutely lovely. •Eggs, hash browns, beans, sausages, yogurt and apple juice are really tasty within the breakfast. •Bed is so comfy, slept like a log every night. •Lobby, lounge and restaurant are beautiful, the decorations/painting throughout the hotel too. •Very convenient by right next to bus stop and train station, can hold your luggage in one of the hotel rooms if you’re unable to get into your room, wether that arrival or departure. Negatives: •Pool needs revamping, it’s very small, cold and boring, we went down to the derwent, always been the best in Torquay for swimming leisure. •Rooms need refurbishing, old/tacky, dusty, windows are uncooperative and let in a draft, shower pressure is bad, dirty carpets and zero space in room to move about. •The tomatoes, mushrooms and bacon on their breakfast are god awful, no one touches them, even staff stand there and complain in disgust about them. •The lobby deceives the rooms, posh and beautiful downstairs but doesn’t continue for the rest of the hotel. •No night entertainment (music/live performers or bingo for example), it’s boring on an evening and the piano player on a Friday is not entertaining whatsoever. Had to venture out again to the derwent, everybody loves live singers and discos. •Outdated door lock system, unsure if safe (key not keycard). •Doors heavy, hard to open/shut and stupid old fashion round door handles. •Tv remote on the blink. •No Wi-Fi signal in room. •Walls very thin. •Cleaners are loud, banging doors and clattering about with no spacial awareness for guests, especially with their trollies. Apologies for my blurry photos, most of them are Screenshots from videos! Would possibly stay again, especially if it was all refurbished and updated:)

Positive experience: We were put in this hotel as the hotel we originally booked transfered us here. I was quite excited as this was a star up from the one we booked. When we arrived we discovered there was no designated disabled parking, no spaces available on the street and a parking garage at £10 a day, I didn't want to pay £40 for parking as that is an unexpected cost. I called the hotel, and the young man on the concierge kindly met us in the garage and said we could park there for free with my blue badge. So the problem was quickly rectified. We checked in and was given room 131. This was ideal as only one floor up and right by the stairs. The room itself was very sweet. Really spacious. There was a fridge, which is what I needed for medication. I actually really liked the room and the bathroom. Unfortunately, the shower had extremely weak pressure, I understand it's an old building, but the lack of pressure was ridiculous. The subtitles were stuck on, on the tv, and the same nice young man from the concierge tried to fix this, but it didn't work. Luckily, my husband managed to do a factory reset, which turned them off. You could hear an extraction fan in the room, but this turned off around 9ish. The view of the room was of a rendered wall, so it was a very internal room. A fire alarm went off at 12.30am and the whole hotel was out on the street until we were allowed back in. There was no explanation other than the alarms are sensitive, which is good in one sense, but then I worried it would go off again. Our first breakfast was on a Saturday morning. It was fairly busy and we had to wait to be seated. Although the man taking room numbers was very nice and pleasant, I didn't see a need to go and seat people as it was a buffet and causing a queue. The continental selection wasn't great which was a shame as I tend to just go for continental. I would have liked some fruit but instead there was fruit chopped and put as a fruit salad. I would prefer to be able to just grab an apple or a kiwi. My husband had the full English selection which he said needed more variety and needed a bit more flavour. Breakfast was set out along the wall on lots of tables, I would have thought for a 4 star hotel they could have proper hot plate set up rather than gastro tins. I also think they should invest in a couple of coffee machines so that you can get a variety of coffee rather than urns. I like tea personally but when people were queuing the tea and coffee was one side of the table, the mugs on the otherside whilst the urn was in the middle. This made no sense when you are queueing. It would be better in order of what you need ie mug, coffee tea etc, Urns and then milk. The buffet breakfast is clearly just out on weekends and we queued for ages on Sunday morning as there was a wedding on the Saturday. They ended up not having enough space for everyone. On top of this, when we gave our room number they said someone had already gone in with our room number, we knew we hadn't had breakfast yet so it wasn't really our issue. However, simply checking people's keys as they go into breakfast would save this issue for them as it sounded like this happened a few times. On Monday the breakfast was the same continental but full English was table service but no difference in flavour. There is a spa area downstairs and we enjoyed swimming a couple of evenings which was lovely and very quiet. The changing rooms were freezing though. The hotel is ideally situated as it's only about a 20 minute walk to the town. All of the staff we came across were really friendly and helpful. The breakfast let the hotel down as did the shower, view of a wall from the room and lack of parking.

Positive experience: Liked the reception/check in - v friendly. The brasserie/bar is lovely. Art deco and nice ambience with sea views.

Fantastic experience: Stayed at the grand for a couple of nights away with my partner. Really easy to get to from the train station, friendly check in and clean room perfectly adequate for a short break. We found the hotel to be quiet during our visit which suited us because we wanted to relax. The bar has a wonderful view out to sea and is unmatched with any of the other hotels we have stayed at in Torquay. Used the indoor pool which is nice for a dip, with changing and shower facilities too. On day of checkout the hotel were able to keep hold of our bags before our evening train. Overall a lovely break and will definitely be keeping an eye on deals to return, as well as considering their other hotels.

Fantastic experience: Lovely staff all around from reception to the cleaners would definitely stay there again. Thank you all for going over and beyond when we checked out and left some items and you found them and kept them until we came back for it. Only criticism would be that the bathroom tap water was very hot and there should be a sign saying this, but all in all everything was amazing.

Negative experience: It's just about the worst experience I have ever had in any hotel. I have been going there since 1975. I will never go back. I think the less said from here, the better.

Sparkle Baker 1 year ago

Positive experience: The hotel as soon as you come in is pretty impressive with the decor but when walking to rooms the carpet is so dated needs replacing, it's bald in a lot of places. Some of the tiles round the indoor pool in the pool needs to be replaced properly as it looked a bit shabby. Hotel is 20mins walk into the town, bus stops outside just across the road. Beds comfy.

Colin James 1 year ago

Positive experience: Lovely old hotel. Public areas are in good condition but rooms are dated. That said, our room was spacious and the bed comfortable, just don't pay too much!

Tori Brooker 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: As a wheelchair user, the accessible room was absolutely massive. We had a king bed and then also bunk beds and a little lounge area. The room was so spacious and had so many plug sockets that I lost count, perfect for all of my equipment. The bed is a divan but we travel with elephant feet so was easily able to raise the bed enough to use my own mobile hoist. I'm unsure if the hotel have their own elephant feet as I didn't ask. The room has thick carpet which made using the mobile hoist a little tricky but still manageable. The bathroom was a good size and had both a bath and wet room facility. We managed to grab some on street parking with a disabled parking permit but there are also spaces in the train station car park. The room was very very cold and we couldn't get the heating working, but we're only staying one night so hadn't mentioned that

Sue 1 year ago

Positive experience: The grand Hotel was once a beautiful place in a past time...today its trading on that. The room we stayed in was tired and really quite awkward trying to use the bath with the shower glass that needs a chair to keep it still..the shared balcony with no divide from the room next door. Very strange shabby decor. The main lounge is grand in a way the staff were friendly and helpful if you don't mind waiting possibly longer than you should to get your main course (1hr)to find it cold and inedible cooked by a very under par cook (it would be a great disservice to Chefs to give him such a title) then other parts of the menu are done well...breakfast is its own challenge...choices very limited in all areas of food. The quality is in the location and its quite stunning views across the bay and walking on the pier things that could be done from a different venue or if this is OK for anyone enjoy.

Positive experience: Stayed there to celebrate NYE and really enjoyed the stay. The public areas of the hotel were nicely decorated. Our bedroom was OK, clean with a comfortable bed. Breakfast was good. The hotel is on the sea front close to Torre Abbey Sands beach and about 20 minutes walk to Torquay town centre. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

Stokesy 23 1 year ago

Negative experience: Had a cheap deal in the not so Grand Hotel, the common areas are in much better condition than the bedrooms, bedroom walls must be very thin as you can hear the neighbouring room talking, coughing and snoring etc... through the night. We had a 2 night stay and 2 nights of not much sleep. The room was very tired and the bathroom had broken floor tiles in the bathroom and the light worked sometimes, but on a plus the staff were very pleasant

Fantastic experience: We couldn't fault this wonderful hotel. Our twin room was beautifully and tastefully decorated and spotless- also very warm, which was perfect for us. All the staff we spoke to were polite and helpful. We had a late lunch of a ham sandwich and chips - there was a huge amount of delicious ham with garlic mayonnaise on fresh bread and a large portion of perfectly cooked chips. The cost was around £7 which we considered to be very reasonable. The location was perfect for us as we travelled by train and it is literally opposite the road so my daughter didn't have to push me too far.

Positive experience: This hotel was once grand as the name suggests . Communal rooms still impressive . However bedrooms in desperate need of refurbishment. Housekeeping never changed our sheets in 4 days. Didnt have a good night sleep ,as you can hear the above Guests walking over creaking for boards.

Fantastic experience: Lovely compact double room with sea view. Bath and overhead shower. We stayed on the 4th floor . Lovely breakfast and we also had a very nice evening meal. We parked in the garage £10 a day . Parking available outside of the hotel if your lucky.

Fantastic experience: Went for lunch, and coffee. Tasty food, lovely presentation, the new menu is excellent, (much better for vegetarians and vegans). A very comfortable lounge with fabulous views across Torquay. Friendly and helpful staff who looked after us perfectly. Highly recommended.

Positive experience: Pleasant room although it was not cleaned or attended to while we were there for two nights. I ordered sandwiches during the day and sadly the bread was not fresh. Our Saturday night function was a complete disaster with sadly second rate food being served over a period of time. Will definitely not rush back.

Ros 1 year ago

Negative experience: We had afternoon tea, booked about 3 weeks before the event (my 70th birthday). Only to wait an hour before we asked staff what was happening. A problem in the kitchen we were told! The teas were mediocre at best, we had stated no fish ( allergies) only to find tuna sandwiches- which is as we all know fish! We'd asked for some plain ham & cheese ones for my grandson, which came out as ham with mustard & cheese with pickle. The bread on the cake stand felt almost crispy where obviously they had been standing for too long ( remember the 1 hour wait) the child's sandwiches had a very greasy, cheap margarine spread on them which virtually made them inedible. The small teapot for me had 3 cheap teabags and was not boiling hot, yet again, left standing, I asked fir some hot water to dilute it, but I couldn't drink 'stewed builders tea. We will never return here.

Positive experience: Very noisy room which continued till late in evening .. room above very noisy with creaking floor boards.. breakfast was not satisfactory ..bedding so tucked in we had awful time to pull it out ..

Positive experience: We had a seaview family room, decor was very dated, and bathroom small it also smelt musty. Restaurant also very dated, bar area much nicer. Breakfast was a buffet but no choice if you are vegetarian. You made your own tea a cup at a time, which didn't work well as they ran out of boiling water. No choice of decaf coffee which I drink so don't know what there premade coffee tasted like. Doubt if I will stay again.

Positive experience: Can only rate on our experience on two nights stay for a wedding. Booking in resulted in a hour and half wait (according to the hotel, Booking in from 3.00 pm. Eventually the room was clean but the furniture showed signs of wear. No room service on the second day. Bar prices were astronomical, after going out for a meal with the bride, decided for a night cap at the hotel, £10.20 for a pint of Devon Dumpling and a medium white wine. Same drinks £7.25 with the meal. Breakfast was buffet, good selection and was hot. The wedding ceremony went without a hitch. Canapes and drinks on the terrace was made with the beautiful weather and scene ove the bay. Decided to have a beer and wine during the afternoon, after some co fusion by the bar staff (wish they knew how to pour a pint, the barol ran ot pulling the pint, so the barrol was changed, what did they try to do, carry on and tried to top up the glass. Got a it stroppy when I complained. The price for the same round as the night before was this time £12.55. The reception dj seemed reluctant to cooperate with gusts requests only turning the volume up and when asked to tone the noise y both the hotel and guests got a bit stroppy and stopped. As someone who has the T shirt, I do wonder at the cost of these type of weddings, are they go value for the money? On the way home listening the local radio about the lack of tourists in Torquay, with price being charged it easy to work out why, and yes I have stayed in hotel's in Torquay of and on for some 15 years.

Fantastic experience: I enjoyed a short stay here in Torquay with friends, I love Devon and the weather was great. Lovely views of sea from hotel and as we came down by train it wasn't far from station.

Joe Corr 2 years ago

Positive experience: Seems to have lost its sparkle. Lovely staff but overstretched. Car park run by a private company now. You can get a voucher from reception to park opposite the hotel. Only one lift working. No sauna or jacuzzi working. Which is strange as I thought it had a re-fit. Unsupervised children running wild in the indoor pool. WiFi is virtually none existant.

Positive experience: Rooms very spacious but unfortunately no aircon. We were cooking. Luckily managed to borrow a fan but had very little sleep for stay. Hotel very old but mostly in good taste. Staff extremely polite and helpful.

Ben Allen 2 years ago

Negative experience: First off the building is stunning and I can only imagine how amazing it would have been a few decades ago, but as times passed it's become a former shell of itself. It now Needs a huge investment to return it to it's former glory. The lobby and ground floor give glimpses to the past and a idea of how it once was. But for now we need to use some imagination as to the grandness of the grand hotel. The hotel tired and waiting to be refreshed with carpets almost threadbare and held down by staples in places. Secondly the hotel has very little to offer other than location and history. The service was lack lustre. (some staff were really friendly and always greeted us with a hello and smile some were just doing their job) We'd booked a family sea view room with a double bed and a single bed for my partner and her son but we were given a room with bunk beds and no Seaview. This may seem slightly picky but when booking a room which costs more and offers better sleeping arrangements well that's what Id expect. A quick trip back to reception sorted this out and we were then given the room which we had originally booked. This was large, airy and had a great view of the bay from the balcony. A word of warning, if you wish to sit on the balcony be prepared to do some limbo dancing as you have to climb under the low sash window to use!! The pool area is tired with tiles missing around the edges and the water is murky, but it was warm and in the warm weather was welcoming break from the heat. The sunbeds were quite comfortable and sturdy with towels provided. You also need to wear a wristband and they actually come around and check if you are wearing one. We didnt use any other facilities as we dined out for dinner and breakfast. Would I recommend the grand hotel? It's a tricky one. But probably not for this reason. At 9:09 there was a knock on the door (bearing in mind check out is 11 and we were only staying for one night) It was housekeeping telling us they needed to clean the room. I reminded them check out was 11 and maybe they should wait till the room was vacated. In all my days I've never felt so rushed to be out the room.

Fantastic experience: A nice 4 ⭐️ hotel with a bit of a history . Amazing location .Great views . Limited parking space unless pre booked (extra change about 10£ a day ) but plenty on street parking for free or hotel staff will direct to park opposite hotel ,near to train station (free) . Reception very welcoming and helpful . Indoor and outdoor (heated ) swimming pool as well as lots of parks and green spaces to go for a walk after massive buffet style breakfast .

peter williams 2 years ago

Positive experience: Excellent room, friendly staff, food was good, snacks and beverages reasonably priced, however, we decided to stay an extra night which entailed a change of room, before booking I asked if we would be able to move straight into our new room and I was assured that we could and so I paid for the room, unfortunately, this wasn't correct and despite the receptionist imploring cleaning staff to make ours a priority they didn't. We waited patiently in the foyer but after 2.5 hours waiting we asked for a refund as I felt we were mis sold the room, the manager declined to do this but advised us to wait as our room could be ready in another hour, I said this wasn't acceptable and we left. I wouldn't put anyone off booking this hotel but our experience was ruined.

Dave Martin 2 years ago

Positive experience: She's a grand old lady, could be a glamorous once again with some refurbishment. This fading glory seams to be lowering the morale & performance of some of the younger staff. A more positive constructive management attitude investing in staff and refurbishment would help. On a more positive note, the food and service in the restaurant at breakfast and dinner was a real suprise and pleasure. The staff were welcoming, polite & professional. They went out of their way to anticipate our needs and exceed expectations. If this could be built on by bringing this professional pride into to the rest of the hotel then the Grand hotel will be a grand experience for all.

Positive experience: Myself and 5 friends stayed here for a 30th birthday celebration. We wanted 3 twin rooms but could only accommodate 2 twin rooms and a double which we accepted. We arrived ahead of time and they had 2 rooms ready so checked in and got the 3rd one later on. Car parking is funny, but opposite the entrance are blacked out yellow lines which you can park for free. They have a garage but not all spaces are free in there. Otherwise find a space in the rugby club which i think is free or train station and pay. Once we had all the keys we realised we had 1 twin and 2 doubles which caused a small drama between my friends. The rooms were also miles apart from each other, on 2 different levels. It was about 3pm. I managed to unzip the bed and remove linen. And then went to reception to explain situation. Poor housekeeper was on her way home but stopped to help. She explained this room should have a been a twin anyway and apologised. I helped her make the beds for time. The double room we had was down a damp smelling corridor. But the room was warm enough. I forgot to take a picture before we unpacked. Hairdryer and minis showering stuff in the room. All receptionists were friendly even under pressure. We used the pool, wouldn't call it a spa. It was about 6pm but it was cold in there, had to get out after 10 mins. They give you a towel and locker key if you want it. Or leave items on pool side. I didn't like the look of the showers, so.i showered in the room. Breakfast was very nice. Buffet style fry up, cereals, yoghurts, toast etc. Very full afterwards. About 20 min walk from the start or the shopping area in torquay. Not sure I would stay here again unfortunately.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely brilliant couple of days spent in the Grand Hotel. Great food and facilities and we really liked our room. Absolutely amazing service especially from Levi who had first class customer service skills. Nothing was too much trouble and she was brilliant on the front desk. So friendly and just what you want when you arrive at a hotel. Service like Levi provided makes you enjoy your stay and definitely want to go back which we definitely will. Well done The Grand Hotel and thank you Levi who will hopefully be there when we go next time.

Fantastic experience: Gorgeous historic hotel. We stayed for one night as a family of four and booked a sea view room, I am so glad we did as the view was breathtaking. I had looked into the hotels history before we arrived but still found it inspiring to be staying there, if only the walls could talk, as I am sure they would have stories to tell! When we arrived at check in sadly our room was not quite ready, we went off for a drink in the bar and the helpful receptionist came and found us when it was ready. We used the indoor swimming pool too which was an added bonus. Breakfast was lovely with options for everyone and again the staff were extremely attentive and polite. We used the hotels “garage” to park our car and feel it was well worth the £10 a night fee to know our car was secure. All in all a great stay and we would absolutely stay again if visiting the area.

Positive experience: A stunning hotel in a prime location, right by the beach & Torquay train station. Stayed in a compact double room with a good view as seen in photos. The hotel itself is a little dated, such as bedrooms, needing a lick of paint. The indoor swimming pool is a good size but water is a little bit cold and the changing rooms were cold too- be prepared! The walls and ceilings are suffering from some mould. The sauna and jacuzzi is sadly closed at the moment (for the foreseeable) due to reasons they didn’t explain which was a shame. The breakfast is amazing - buffet style full English and continental with lots to choose from and all in a good setting with helpful staff.

Positive experience: Like walking into an old movie. The hotel is just spectacular to look at. I will say that what you get in the rooms is pretty basic, nowhere to hang a coat unless you bring a hanger, and when we requested an iron, we were brought an accident waiting to happen. But overall, a nice hotel to experience but I don't think I'll go back.

Positive experience: Very tired and shabby room, we were quite disappointed. Corridors tatty, carpet seen better days, wallpaper hanging off in areas. Not really a Grand Hotel. The Bathroom hadn’t changed since the 80s. Felt grubby and dingey. In desperate need of a refurb. Most uncomfortable hard bed I’ve ever stayed in. The sea view was good, the communal reception and bar area were really nice, loved the real fire and original fire place. Limited veggie food. Meals ok. Best value was the olive salad platter, that was fab. Friendly staff on reception and in the restaurant. One of the bar staff ladies was quite rude. We won’t be returning. Get a Far superior stay at a Premier Inn and far better value as rooms aren’t cheap here.

Positive experience: We were in Devon for the weekend and popped into The Grand for a cream tea and ‘time walk’. I’ll start with the good points: Location, view and easy parking The light fixtures are beautiful and a lovely compass mural on the ceiling There’s a piano (though no one was playing) They have a well stocked library - especially kids books, which delighted my youngest Reception staff were polite, friendly and approachable Dogs are allowed The bad: The staff in the main lounge/central bar were disinterested and rude. None of them wanted to be there, bar one, who served the tea and scones to the table. He was polite and friendly. Even cracked a smile! The decor - the sofas and chairs with the floor and the walls, it’s a lot. The building looks tired and worn - from where we were sat, one of the windows looked like it was falling apart The loos - they need a refresh Overall, The Grand needs some love and would have loved to have seen it in its heyday.

Negative experience: I stayed here with a large family group and the service was hopeless from start they messed up our rooms and totally confused all of us when checking in. We booked a meal in the restaurant for Saturday night and they hadn't registered it. The menu in the restaurant was terrible with only nine items on the whole menu. No Vegan options and two of our party were vegan. Some items unavailable which made the menu even more restricted. I choose the vegetarian option which was pasta which was watery tomato sauce with overcooked pasta and grated cheese not what was expected from a 4 star hotel. Worse still on Sunday morning I woke up and tried to use the bathroom but my bathroom door was locked from the inside so I couldn't get in at all and had to get a staff member to try and open it. He couldn't open so said I would have to wait until 8.30 when the maintenance man would arrive, so 2 hours after I got up. Unfortunately my glasses were in the bathroom so I couldn't see to go down for breakfast. No one really apologised or offered any compensation for the bad service and food.

Positive experience: Nice seaside hotel. Has had some money spent recently. We had a Seaview room! First floor 103 but was looking out on the raised restaurant roof complete with cigarette butt's from people smoking out the windows. Room was OK, did have stained white bedding and throw. Bed had huge stain down the side. Drunk tried getting in our room at 12am couple arguing at 2am next door. Breakfast was a letdown. Served until 10 am. Went in at 9.30, and hot food was running out. Asked for bacon and beans. Not doing anymore was the answer! Sausages were white, with no colour and fairly solid. At 10, everything was wipped away, and they made it obviouse you needed to leave banging and crasjmhing around. Emptied the table next to us and wipped the contents of food residue off the table onto the floor, some hitting our feet!! Disgusting!! It stayed there with us sat next to it. On check out told reception the issues, even she said it was disgusting. Wrote it down. Never heard a thing from the hotel since, never offered an apology or a discount!! Sums up a British Seaside hotel, disgusting poor service.

Fantastic experience: what a place! loved every minute! hotel rooms little outdated, however the staff welcomes you warmly into the stylish gorgeous reception area/foyer. Excellent location, some parking available if you're lucky too

Positive experience: A nice hotel, lovely night scenes from the restaurant food was good. Some issues on checkout get till receipts just in case there is errors in what you had and what they say you had. Having said that, it's a pleasant place to stay. Fancy a trip on the train to see the other resorts like Dawlish Warren and paignton the station is outside the hotel, check prices at the purchase point ie Torquay station, as you can visit these places for a small amount ask at the train station tell them you want to go to as you can hop on and off to many places on route for the same money.

Negative experience: Like faulty towers stayed for weekend, had to wait for over 2 hrs for evening meal. Breakfast was just as bad put on a table with dirty dishes then forgot about so moved to different table. Talked to manager who was stressed out didn't do anything. Bar area lovely. Pool says sauna and hot tub but none there.

Negative experience: Told me ar check-in they needed £100 deposit which would be returned within 3 days of check out. I had already paid for the room. At check out was told refund would be 3-5 days. Cannot see why it cannot be instant refund, when I bank payment is instant. The hotel was good but this left a nasty taste

Negative experience: This hotel really has seen better days. Family room was fine, there is an 'opt-in' scheme for daily maid service under the guise of 'helping the planet, but really its 'helping keep the wage bill down' when I did 'opt-in' for my room to be cleaned...it wasn't, complained..nothing done. Tv/free view is run off WiFi....which doesn't have a good signal = no TV in the room. Inside pool area, very tatty, damp, cold, grubby and generally uninviting, changing rooms even worse. No member of staff looked happy, smiling. Just a very uninspiring stay...there are Much better places to stay in torquay

Negative experience: Completely disgusting! Check in was supposed to be at 3! Was asked to wait in bar, at 7 months pregnant they left me there for 2 hours, Didn't get into our room until 6pm, had to cancel our dinner reservation as couldn't get in our room to get showered and dressed, room was minging, not hoovered, not dust, bed not made, hair all over bathroom and floor! Empty glassses and bottles outside our room! 20 or so other guests also waiting for their room! Poo in our toilet! Swimming pool absolutely appalling! Plasters on floor, hair, dirty towels and mud everywhere as have to walk in your outside clothes and shoes on poolside to get to changing rooms! We left so waiting for our refund and will try to find somewhere else!! Family paid for us to stay at another hotel, left a pregnant woman to look for alternative accommodation in the dark, Completely and utterly disgusting and so absolutely disappointed!! NOT A 4 STAR HOTEL feel completely lied to by the website looks like there are massive problems here

Positive experience: Very long wait to check in. Up 3 hours some even turned away. Didnt get what we asked for. Sea view because they over booked. Lovely hotel. Let down by bad management and under staffing. Shame it did Ruin are valentines weekend. And are first ever stay at the hotel.

Negative experience: The Grand hotel is anything but Grand You walk in and you think oh this is nice then things take a turn, a surprise £100 holding charge that was not mentioned anywhere on booking, and that no other hotel I've stayed at has asked for. The overall standard beyond the main foyer and bar/restaurant area is poor and dated and in need of some serious renovation. Our room was old fashioned, tired and grotty with no WiFi and the previous occupants urine stains in Bathroom, bath was tiny, shower was OK though. The following mornings breakfast was buffet which was fine however seriously who serves tiny cocktail sausages in a cooked breakfast? we were asked on check in of and dietary requirements and stated the 1 person required a vegan breakfast with no dairy, this resulted in my partner have a couple of hash browns and toast, unacceptable. If your vegan or have dietary requirements, Don't bother with this place they are not interested and don't care! When all these issues where raised with front desk the attitude arrogant and I'll quote what she said "what do you want me to do about it?" whilst open mouthed chewing gum. No one was sent to room to clean however I will say they gave us a complimentary bottle of house white wine which we gifted to a friend. Don't waste your hard earned money going to the grand hotel you will regret it.

Negative experience: Absolutely poor visit and experience. To start off with the inconvenience at the reception. For a 4 star hotel very poor staff and poor behaviours and attitudes. No friendliness what so ever. Had I booked at Travelodge or premier inn I probably would have gotten a better service. Staff member in the from was rude and abrupt and checking in was not straight forward even after having completed all the activities online almost and hour and a half wait in the que!! One person booking people in and out as well as making spa bookings and dinner reservations obviously she is over worked and unfortunately she is taking the stress out on the guests. Unacceptable and paying customers do not deserve to go through such bad experience and inconvenience. Parking is the other issue! Why would you not have an allocated sufficient parking spaces for the customers? You are a 4 star hotels and operates and organised more poorer than a B&B!! Was asked to move my vehicle twice. Room service - was told the you don’t do a daily house keeping? How ridiculous is that? Why wouldn’t you do daily house keeping? Replacing toiletries? I should not have to walk out of my room to que up in the reception for over 40 minutes to get toilet tissues just because your house keeping team had gone home and they don’t answer the phone. I payed for my breakfast to be delivered to the room at 9am and had to ask the receptionist three times during the day to have the trays removed from the room and at 6:30pm some one was in and removed the trays. 3rd time when I was speaking to the receptionist I was told that I could have bought the trays down my self? That was a deal breaker!!! Disgusted and appealing experience! Both days had to wait in a que to make a dinner reservation and the waiting was for over 40 minutes in the que where the one staff member was checking in or checking out guests. How awful is that? Why wouldn’t you be able to book a dinner table at the restaurant? If you want it to be done at the reception at least have more staff at the reception to make it convenient for people. Never had such a poor experience! Poorly organised, rude and inconsiderate staff! Get your house in order and definitely not a 4 star hotel!!!

Positive experience: We stayed for 2 nights, the outside looked promising and so was the lobby, 2 people struggling to check in over 20 people that took from 3pm to 6 pm, people were getting annoyed, frustrated and tired by the service. They asking for a deposit of £100 at the check in which is not mentioned before booking, the parking must be paid for the night parking wherever you finding. A 4☆ hotel you expecting them to offer room cleaning every day but apparently you must be charged for the room service and then take your tray back downstairs or you stay in the hotel with smell of food in the room for the entire holiday. The restaurant has a menu without orices and ended up paying for 2 meals, one course each , over £70 without any explanation whatsoever. Restaurant personnel young and nice, rooms are not what you seeing advertised, old building needing renovation, baths are not deep but very shallow, but the showers really good pressure water. Not going back and not recommending for the money paid.

Negative experience: View great, service shocking to the point of rudeness reheated Cajun chicken burger no flavour and standard fries no extras. No check of our enjoyment of meal and plates still on table 20 minutes later. Sorry but you need to know.

Negative experience: On arrival ordered vegan breakfast for following morning, came down to eggs and beans mixed up, tomatoes and black pudding together, ordered the vegan sausages another guest warned me they were vile and she was right mashed vegetables aren't what you want for breakfast ‍♀️ the jug of soya milk was dirty so was sent back. went to the main desk to a lady who clearly wasn't interested and tried to say we hadn't made them aware I was vegan but the lad who checked us in was next to her so couldn't deny further. Following morning even worse no mushrooms, sausages for my partners breakfast was cocktail sausages and all I had was as you can see hash browns on toast ‍♀️ appalling when already highlighted lactose interance and dairy makes me very ill. Now onto the room, bathroom hadn't been cleaned, there was soap scum round the bath and previous guests urine on the underside of the toilet, raised this with the front desk but no one came up to the room to rectify and clean it we were just given a free bottle of wine. On check in we had to pay a further £100 holding deposit we weren't warned about at booking, the main entrance looked lovely but once passed that and heading to your room the place was dated and grotty and in desperate need of minimum a fresh lick of paint but ideally needs a complete over haul. For a grand hotel it isn't grand, it's grotty, dated and staff don't care, wouldn't recommend and wouldn't come here ever again

Positive experience: This hotel has very good and very bad points, so is difficult to rate. I would however say it is definitely a 3 star hotel and not a 4 star as advertised. Pros: If your room has a view, it's a good one. The breakfast is great, completely self serve: available was cereal, yoghurts, fruit, pastries, juice, hash browns, scrambled and fried egg, toast, beans, etc. Some of the staff are attentive, friendly or helpful. Attractive rooms. Grand dining rooms and lobby. Refreshments in the room included hot chocolate. Clean bed and tidy room. Cons: Woman at reception said she would be with us shortly, then left for 10 minutes. When she came back she did not acknowledge us at all. Then she left and came back again, left again. Eventually someone else served us. They take a £50 deposit even though you have paid for the room already. Decorative schemes in the 'public' areas of the hotel are questionable. Hallways are a bit dingy. Bedside lamp in the room was flickering. Wallpaper in the room was soiled and peeling. Cracked tiles and split wood in the bathroom. Shower only did very hot or very cold. No vegetarian options on the room service menu.

Fantastic experience: Met up with friends in this great hotel on the sea front. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, even the younger ones, including Olly on the breakfast shift. The meals were lovely and well presented and the bar staff when we came back late didn't mind at all.

Negative experience: We have had afternoon tea previously at the grand. My husband booked for us with our son. On Christmas Eve we had the booking for 14:00 they seated us and my son bought a drink at the bar. At 14:45 we reminded them we booked afternoon tea. It arrived at around 15:00 and the sandwiches were poor. We had a warm scone each. They were good. The cakes well, very small bit of cake with buttercream icing A small piece of Christmas cake and a homemade Christmas cookie each. Poor poor poor. The worst I’ve ever had and I’ve been to Bovey Castle, the Ilsington, lewtrenchard manor, The Orleston, and the Grand is awful in comparison. The service also was shocking. Young staff not bothered at all, will never be back. It never used to be like this so they need to sort themselves out .

Fantastic experience: I visited Torquay with my family twice last year and will be planning another vacation there this year. The atmosphere is fantastic, the scenery is gorgeous, and the staff is all very welcoming! I adore the Grand Hotel so much! They have an indoor pool as well as an outdoor one, numerous Agatha Christie books, and the suite, which I really liked. My kids also adore it!

Positive experience: The Grand Hotel is lovely and very traditional, check in was a slightly awkward due to staff training but not an issue at all. Receptionist were nice and friendly and very professional as we checked in 2 hours early, room 266 had sea views and as it was on the corner it over looked the train station and Rugby club as well. Breakfast was nice and alot of choice , the bar area was very sociable and exceptionally clean with views over the seafront. For a 2 night stay with proceco and usage of the the pool and gym over New Year’s Eve along with breakfast this was a bargain at £129 off Groupon, I would defo return

Fantastic experience: Excellently located near the train station with easy access to the bus service for commuting round the beautiful town of Torbay. Excellent world class services with courteous and welcoming staff. Surely a place that would be great to stay anytime one is in Torbay.

Positive experience: This was my first visit to The Grand despite having lived in Torbay for 5 years. I was there for a Christmas lunch with a group of around 40 others. The decorations upon entering were sumptuous giving a lovely seasonal welcome. The views from the bar were stunning. We ate our meal in a very nice room again with lovely views and the lunch was very good. All the staff were helpful and welcoming.

Negative experience: Paid my bill when I arrived, checked on my Bank app, overpaid, they said they would refund, only to find they had taken a similar amount out, What a start. The other half, bought a dress, when we arrived, we left the hotel after 7 days time, It was buried at the bottom of suitcase When we arrived at the next hotel, We looked for it, it had gone, we rang them, emailed them, they didn't won't to know. We had no WiFi, the room was poorly serviced. that's when it was serviced. Facilities in the gym, most not working. Changing rooms for gym and pool, didn't seem to get cleaned, towels all over floors, same ones day's after days. 7 days bed and breakfast cost over £1400, The worst hotel, I've been in by far. Thank you The GRAND TORQUAY.

Positive experience: This hotel looks amazing as you walk in, and what is obvious from the start is that the staff go above and beyond and are spectacular, it's just a shame about everything else, the lamp in the room was dangerous as the head was falling off below the bulb, the tv remote didn't work and the tv was held together with electrical tape, the beds were very uncomfortable and the internal phone system didn't work in the room or on the landing. We went as friends, and I can honestly say this hotel is much more geared up for romantic and couple breaks. We used wowcher as it was a fantastic deal. The food was quite pricey and pretentious and lacked any real quality, I mean it was ok, but not great and for the price you'd expect it to be. The room service sandwiches however were amazing we had one both nights. All in the staff make this hotel very special and despite the negatives they make it well worth a visit, plus the room was very spacious, amazing sea views and it was clean and fresh. It was £155 for 2 nights for 2 people, honestly if you get chance to visit then why not, they are updating the rooms one by one so I can see in time it being a amazing place to stay.

Positive experience: Stayed here for an Agatha Christie Murder Mystery weekend. The public areas of the hotel were very impressive and the staff friendly and efficient. However other areas appeared somewhat tired, the tiles of the steps to the entrance were severely cracked as was a tile in the bathroom floor of our en suite. The curtains also needed re-hanging. The hotel chain has gone "green" meaning that rooms are not serviced daily, you have to request a service and even the replacement of milk, tea, coffee etc. Personally, when I am staying at a hotel I do not want to have to deal with this sort of thing which is normally done automatically.

Fantastic experience: Just back from a long weekend stay and cannot fault the staff especially the lovely receptionist on Saturday who went out of her way to keep us in the same room after us finding out we would have to stay an extra night due to train strikes. The room had a beautiful sea view and was lovely to chill out in the bar with a drink and another wonderful view. Breakfast was lovely with lots to choose from. Thank you all so much for an amazing stay to celebrate my birthday

Positive experience: We were transferred from Abbey Sands Hotel, but i think we lucked out, it was a really nice hotel, we had a great sea view with a bottle of wine. It has a nice pool which we went to each morning. Friendly staff. Right next to the railway station. Parking was in the railway station, but that was not a big deal, the porter helped move our bags to the room. My only negative was the cost of breakfast for two adults and two small kids was something like £54 which felt a bit steep when they only have a bowl of cereal. But would definitely go back. Thanks for a great weekend.

Fantastic experience: Had a Thursday night deal and had a suite and Breakfast for about £180 .Had a see view, bed was comfy and room cozy this also came with a small lounge with tea coffee and a Minnie fridge .Great value The room has been updated and looks nice the bathroom is still a bit out of date However it was more than worth the money. 3course meal for 2 with wine came to about £82 and was nice. We live locally and would certainly return soon .. I would say the dining room has some crazy colours. The main bar is modern and airy with small cozy settles and a library to sit in "Very nice" Even the manger chatted and passed the time of day ..Thank you

Negative experience: We had our wedding reception at the grand and went very often for dinner and lunch in the conservatory. We have now moved to the north of England from Torquay but when down decided we would stay at the grand as loved this hotel. Well our room was appalling. We had to sit on the toilet with the bathroom door between our legs as hinges on door not working. Lampshades on bedside lamps broken off. Window sill badly needed painting, no mattress protector or pillow protector and a bottom bed sheet that was too small for mattress that it did not cover mattress. Have now written two e mails and no response so called hotel and promised that general manager would call me back as was in today, and guess what no call. Is this what you call exceptional customer service. To move a business forward you have to be and do better then your competition. I suggest you go to the headland hotel and spa where the service and standards are exemplary
