Our comment from FitFit UK about Sports Centre:
Sports Centre in Canterbury is a comprehensive facility that caters to a wide range of sports and fitness needs. Located within the University of Kent, it provides an inviting atmosphere for students and community members alike.
Highlights:
- Offers a variety of well-maintained sports facilities, including a fully equipped gym that is ideal for upper body training.
- Access to numerous sports halls for various activities like volleyball, tennis, and badminton.
- Friendly and professional staff who are always willing to assist.
- Affordable membership options, especially beneficial for students.
- Clean and tidy environment, well-maintained equipment.
- Excellent range of classes and activities specifically for students.
However, some users have raised concerns:
- Equipment availability can be an issue, especially during busy hours, as the gym is popular among the university's large student body.
- Limited hours for certain facilities and occasional interruptions during massages due to noise from staff.
- The gym can become crowded, leading to longer wait times for equipment.
- No swimming pool is available.
Overall, Sports Centre remains a great choice for fitness enthusiasts, providing a good balance of facilities and activities that focus on both individual and team sports.

Sports Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Quite complete gym. Mostly for upper body training.
Positive experience: love the place, all well taken care of
Fantastic experience: Went to a national brick event, very good
Fantastic experience: Almost all the facilities are up to Olympic standard. Rates are very reasonable with a variety of memberships available.
Negative experience: The massage I had here with trainees was good in the whole but there was so much talking (about football!) going on by other staff members in the same room which continued after the masseurs addressed it! Not great for £30.
Negative experience: Gym equipment is good… that being said… there’s hardly any of it. About 50 cardio machines (for which about 10% are in use at a time) and about 4 benches, for at least 3000+ active students. At any time of the day it will be busy, there’s hardly any weight machines, and that’s if there isn’t a queue for it. Most members are students, so asking for their sets or working in will probably get you a blank stare
Fantastic experience: Good
Positive experience: DISPLAY WHEN YOU ARE CLOSED ON HOLIDAYS BETTER!!!!!! Put it on the website and actually put "24th December: Closed" rather than making us guess
Negative experience: Women only gym time takes up the ENTIRE gym. There’s about 10 women in there and as a male who’s paid over £200 for this membership, I expect to be able to use the gym for unlimited use and then I’m palmed off by the incompetent staff. There should still be a section for men throughout these times
Fantastic experience: Efficient and helpful receptionist. Sports Centre staff are very helpful and the facilities excellent.
Negative experience: I was denied entry during the only hours I could actually go to the gym on my Tuesdays and Thursdays because it’s women only hours. Got to ask whether men only hours would go down well. I think not! We feel unsafe when women film us without consent and plaster us over social media, so to see women getting their designated hours whilst men don’t is astonishing!
Fantastic experience: Great centre, really nice facility if you're a student at the Uni.
Negative experience: Please indicate the correct opening and closing times instead of putting one time on your website and another in the actual gym
Fantastic experience: Amazing place!
Fantastic experience: It has superb facilities.
Fantastic experience: Very professional and helpful staff.
Negative experience: Loads of tredmils, small free weights section which is always too full to use, didn't have equipment I was looking for
Positive experience: Rowing machine is broken(still!)
Negative experience: The capacity of this gym is ridiculous. There are only 2 flat-benchpress benches, 4 deadlifting and 5 squat platforms. Plus there are some people who camp at specific equipment in an excess of an hour which is frustrating. Worst gym ever. Plus there's not even a private gym nearby which is the most annoying thing ever.
Hello, Thank you for raising these points, customer feedback is always welcome so we can amend and improve the service we provide. Your comment regarding the benches available is very valid and we will look to address this in the coming weeks to provide more options to our users. In respect to the number of lifting platforms we are currently restricted by space but are aware we need to factor additional ones into future facility development plans that we may have. Users camped out on equipment will be raised with the fitness team and they will be expected to monitor this and speak to these individuals. I would also urge you to raise this with a member of staff on duty if you feel this isn’t being addressed as at times they may be elsewhere helping other customers. Thank you, Kent Sport
Positive experience: No cafe on a Saturday?
Positive experience: Well spaced, access controlled, unfortunately no spinning outside of the regularly scheduled classes.
Fantastic experience: It’s been amazing to improve my tennis skills at these courts
Positive experience: Enjoyed and bust out
Fantastic experience: Great gym for such good value for money
Negative experience: Horrible gym and horrible management
Negative experience: Don't even know what this is.
Positive experience: Come early to get a spot with the equipment you want.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and free for first year students. Would reccomend the sports facilities... they're great.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant experience
Positive experience: Weight room is often overcrowded even though the gym is now bookings only. The resistance room tends to be free most of the time and generally the facilities are good. The cardio room also tends to be overcrowded.
Negative experience: I have wasted nearly £200 on a membership i can barely use because the weights area is constantly booked up. Unless you book a week in advance, good luck trying to book a session. The gym sessions are only 1 hour long, a lot of the equipment has been taken out to make space (There are only 2 benches), maximum of 25 people are allowed in at one time and most of the equipment is outdated.
Positive experience: Very organised for COVID protocols. Effective and efficient.
Negative experience: Cramped, ok machines
Positive experience: Good gym facilities, shame it's not 24 hours though
Thank you for your feedback.
Positive experience: It's a good place, they offer classes to get you started. The only problem for me is the once a year membership fee. If it could be split into per term payments it would be great
Thank you for the review. There is a dual payment option for students where the membership fee can be split into two payments. Please email [email protected] for details.
Positive experience: good
Positive experience: Good and friendly environment. Great equipments
Negative experience: Way too crowded and no where near enough equipment to facilitate
Negative experience: Sporting centre for body fitness
Negative experience: Has good enough equipment but only 2 benches with 1 regularly being sectioned off for power lifting society. This is not acceptable for £245 a year.
Negative experience: No swimming. Close too early during weekends.
Positive experience: Great staff, clean and well maintained facilities, but too small for the amount of people that use it.
Fantastic experience: A lot of sports and installations. Cheap price for students.
Fantastic experience: Clean n tidy
Fantastic experience: It’s a well equipped sport center, with a fitness suite, sport halls for volleyball, tennis, badminton, basketball etc.
Positive experience: Very limited variation of equipment
Negative experience: Absolute garbage - there are 17,000 students in this university, of which the majority probably has a gym membership. Yet this gym looks like it's equipped for maybe 15-20 people at the same time (on the first floor at least) - yet there will always be around 50. Good luck for getting a pit spot - barely even worth trying. Old equipment, stuff keeps breaking. And that for 200£/year? An absolute joke.
Fantastic experience: Uni gym great
Positive experience: Nice but less equipments
Positive experience: Good gym. Gets a bit busy and I wish they would turn the air con on. Probably the warmest gym I've used.
Fantastic experience: Outstanding facilities
Fantastic experience: Everything a student needs to train
Fantastic experience: 90 odd quid (for students) per annum can't be beat, and the sheer number of classes/activies it amazing. Could do with staying open later on Sundays though.
Fantastic experience: Nice place for sports training very clean and tidy
Positive experience: Gym is ok expensive but well equipped. Has weight for arm training and cycling machines for leg training. Free water is always nice. The problem is it's £200 is for the whole year , there are better ways of exercising for cheaper.
Positive experience: The gym is good and full of efficient equipment. However it is full of people all the time due to almost every student of the university goes into the gym
Fantastic experience: Great staff fantastic facilities overall awesomeness
Positive experience: Great sports massage.
Fantastic experience: Superb facilities inside and out. Three types of membership on campus Bronze through to Gold. Gold is roughly £200 pa.
Positive experience: A friendly environment with a good variety of equipment.
Fantastic experience: Complejo deportivo en la Universidad de Kent (Canterbury) con buenas instalaciones.
Positive experience: Decent and cheap
Positive experience: Great venue, sports halls to be expected as well as a gym that has public membership. However most of the other classes, clubs and activities are all accessible to students only so need to be both a current student at ukc as well as having membership to the clubs and sports centre.
Fantastic experience: Good variety of equipment and not too busy if you go at the right time. Staff are very friendly. Getting a membership is definitely worth it.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities. Good place to go to with friends for a workout.
Negative experience: Poor quality equipment, something's always broken and fixing takes ages!!! If I knew it was gonna be like this, I wouldn't have paid £250!! Only good thing is that staff are nice and try to be helpful!
Positive experience: Friendly staff, high tech equipment.
Negative experience: Staff can be unfriendly at times, gym is often over crowded
Fantastic experience: Top class facilities for sports in Canterbury would recommend
Positive experience: Can be busy a lot of the time but has good and plenty of equipments
Positive experience: Oliver Seger and I go and now we're massive! He can barely fit through doors he's that big
Fantastic experience: Ok
Positive experience: Good deal for its price. A lot of good classes to go to. Only downside: there is no pool.
Fantastic experience: Gym facilities are excellent, lots of classes to choose from in term-time.
Fantastic experience: Went there for 2 years! Got massive muscles and most important all the chicks are now mine. Now back to studying while I much protein bar #rekt
