However, some users have expressed concerns regarding the cleanliness and maintenance of the centre. Reports of dirty toilets and management issues have been noted, which detracts from the overall experience. Additionally, there have been mentions of miscommunication during bookings and negative customer service experiences that the centre needs to improve.
Cons:
- Cleanliness issues, especially in toilets

- Limited facilities (no swimming pool)
Overall, Portslade Sports Centre offers a range of activities and a pleasant environment for sports and events, though attention to cleanliness and customer service improvements would enhance the experience further.
Portslade Sports Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: Decent venue for children’s parties and sports events.
Negative experience: The place is really cold, the coffee is expensive but the worst thing is that the toilets are absolutely disgusting
Fantastic experience: We recently celebrated my friends daughter's birthday at Portslade sports Centre and she had an absolute blast! I can't recommend this place enough, big shout out to Caitlen for her attentiveness and for making the party truly special!
Fantastic experience: Maths lesson for adult s Monday to help me grand son .
Fantastic experience: Nice place
Fantastic experience: I came here pretty nervous, as a bigger lady I don’t always know what to expect when I go somewhere like this and was worried I wouldn’t fit in. I was completely wrong! I met a lovely young lady called Caitlen who made me feel so welcome. She seemed busy but made me feel like she had all the time in the world to talk to me and answer any questions I had, didn’t rush me and I instantly felt at ease without starting anything yet. She told me where everything was and what they offer without any pressure to book anything immediately. I went to try the gym (very reasonably priced) and think I’ve decided this is the place for me. Thank you! Thank you!
Fantastic experience: My little boy adores the jungle run.
Negative experience: The Portslade Sports Centre has exhibited significant management issues, resulting in concerns regarding cleanliness and overall operational standards. Additionally, the managerial conduct has been described as disruptive and overbearing, undermining the professional atmosphere of the establishment. The facility's condition is particularly alarming given its use by schools, reflecting poorly on its suitability for accommodating such clientele. Furthermore, attempts to address these issues through social media were met with censorship, epitomizing a concerning lack of transparency and accountability within the management. As a result of this experience, the decision has been made to refrain from utilizing the services of Wealden Leisure or Freedom Leisure in the future. Furthermore, the encounter with a staff member was marred by a perceived lack of adherence to standard customer service protocols, further contributing to the unfavorable impression of the establishment and its operations.
Hi Sally, We are aware that you are a 'friend' of John Willams who was banned from the centre for his intimidating behaviour to a female member of staff. The centre manager called Mr Williams to attempt to resolve the situation and was also abused by him. As a result we banned him from the centre. If you realised the abuse that our staff were subjected to we are sure that you would not be writing these spiteful reviews at his request. We also do not kindly take to spamming our social media pages with negative reviews that were a result of his anger, which is why you and him were also banned from posting on the pages. This happened over 6 months ago and we have repeatedly asked you both to move on as we consider the matter closed.
Negative experience: A dirty filthy place, seems to be stuck in a 1960's time warp. Badly managed. I would give it zero stars if I could. The manager (Jason) who was also rude to me when i complained about the behaviour of his staff member, seems impulsive, inexperienced and immature, is not customer focused and doesn't appear to understand customer service. Why are untrained staff like the young woman on the front desk allowed to face the public with no experience and a surly expression, not even looking at you as they speak and with a bolshy patronising attitude. Also I asked for a refund for two weeks of sessions I was unable to use and was stubbornly refused. The young female reception staff member was aggressive and intimidating to customers. Because I was dissatisfied with the condition of the sports centre I said I would cancel my membership and make a complaint to the council about its condition. The manager (Jason) as a defensive measure banned me so that I couldn't cancel and make him look bad, then he proceeded to lie about me in an attempt to get himself off the hook. A shoddy place with a threatening atmosphere that feels like it's run by gangsters.
To clarify the story - You were banned from the centre due to your intimidating behaviour towards a female member of staff that several customers were also witness to. The young lady on the front desk informed you that the squash courts were not currently open, which you could not accept and continued to argue with her, and then forced your way past to try to use the courts. The centre manager later called you to attempt to resolve the situation and was spoken to rudely by yourself. We will not tolerate any abuse to any of our members of staff, nor should our staff feel intimidated by anyone. We stand by our decision of your ban from the centre and believe your review here is somewhat dictated by the anger you feel towards this decision. Also this is the third time you have posted a review after you were banned over 6 months ago? Please stop spamming us with reviews and kindly move on.
Negative experience: No Water slides or Swimming Pools? What kind of Lesure Centre Is that? Hopefully they get the funding off the Council, they could make a good Water slide on the hill going down to a Pool outside
No we do not have a swimming pool. If you had looked at our web pages there is no mention of a pool being at the centre. King Alfred or Prince Regent have swimming pools.
Fantastic experience: Went to an independent exercise class
Fantastic experience: Been using this sport center over the years for different sports. The football pitches there are top of the range
Positive experience: Nice little gym. Small but has everything you need for a proper workout.
Positive experience: Patrons need to be shown how to use a toilet.
Positive experience: Like it there but toilets need a good scrub. I won't touch the door handles to leave. Pretty gross so I use the corner edge of my key to open it. CLEAN THE RAATID TOILETS! and don't forget the door and handles, they're the worst.
Negative experience: We booked both of our children's birthday parties with Portslade Sports Centre and paid the deposit over the phone. However, I only received an email confirmation for one party. When I rang to check, due to staff sickness they had only booked in one party and the day we had asked for the other was now double booked. We asked for the deposit to be returned which they assured us they would do. However despite multiple phone calls (over 30 plus) we still haven't received a refund. The deposit was given to them in December and it is now February. Really poor experience. Avoid at all costs.
Positive experience: Easy to find sports centre, we were here for an event. No cafe just vending drinks, and busy carpark.
Fantastic experience: Snooker tables are in really good condition and play very well - great value as well!
Fantastic experience: Great Dance Fit and LBT. The reception staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. ( So different from Withdean). Renewing my membership in a few weekdays but this time, just Portslade!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic to see the center after being away for over 30 years.
Fantastic experience: Good value indoor football
Positive experience: Nice badminton courts... Helpful staff but toilets facilities need to be cleaned more.
Positive experience: Sports hall good quality. Gym is okay, but broken equipment which takes 3-4 .months to fix Parking is limited and always an issue around peak times. Staff are always friendly and welcoming and a big asset to this site.
Positive experience: Sports hall is good quality. Parking is difficult. Showers have been off limits for months.
Fantastic experience: I love this place, so much to do.
Negative experience: Usually very good but on the ever more frequent occasion a shambles! Called day prior to check kids jungle run times. Only to arrive the next day with a 2 year old at 9am to be told it’s closed and turned away. Screaming child as her little world collapsed when told we couldn’t go in. Wouldn’t mind but not the first time and always the same woman!!! Not acceptable
Fantastic experience: Great fun for kiddos
Negative experience: I will probably be accused of being a total Karen but would absolutely never book another party here. We were put in a room (I can’t call it a party room) that was old, tired and with no facilities to make (or dispose of) drinks (of either variety). We were given some jugs of water and left to it. I had to ask for access to the room next door that had a kitchenette and was told we could have access for 30 mins as there was another party. The room itself had three tables left out and a whiteboard that was decorated with some old board pen markings from what looked like football games. We cleaned this ourselves. The room with the football in was at the polar opposite end of the building so we took them all down to the party and were told to bring a jug of water and some cups for their break by the guy “running” the football element. THEN when I asked at reception for a refill we were told we couldn’t take the jug back into the game room. That no drinks were allowed. This was said to me like I was trying to circumvent a rule that I didn’t know existed in the first place so I left the jug and walked away to be told very sarcastically “you are welcome”. Expecting young children of 6 or 7 to play for 90 mins with no drink or walk the full length of the building for a glass of water is unreasonable. Being told that “all parties have to do this” is patently ridiculous and most parties have their food room either attached or immediately above so this might be more appropriate for them. The guy doing the football party just got them playing a game. We were told that they would do little games and skills when we booked. It also refers to drills etc on the website. He didn’t have a whistle and struggled to command the attention of a dozen 7 year olds. My husband did more of the organising of this than the person in charge, arranging a penalty shoot out for example. If you don’t have the facilities or the staff who can cater for this kind of "party" (term used very loosely) you shouldn’t offer it. The only thing that saved this was that the kids didn’t seem to care and it was cheap. So maybe we should have expected less but we didn’t get what we were sold over the phone. Disappointed is not the word.
Hi Sam, I apologise you were disappointed with your experience. I have passed this review on to management so they can use your feedback to improve. We will look into the issue around drinks/water and access so that this can be organised better. Thank you for taking the time to feedback, The Portslade Team
Negative experience: Really unclear with booking, when I call they say a court will be free but then when I turn up from Brighton on a bus they say there isn’t a court free and add a huge fee onto the price they tell me over the phone
Positive experience: Friendly staff helpful with setting up and maintenance when required
Fantastic experience: children had lovely time at my granddaughter party sunday great place
Positive experience: Great place for my grandchildren to run and play
Negative experience: Absolutely filthy the worst place to go to, disgustingly dirty. Need a new management.
Positive experience: Just been here to have my first workout at the gym after moving here last week. The gym is quite dated: it badly needs a lick of paint, a deep clean and some modern cardio equipment, but it'll do til I get a car and can go elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: I travelled from Liverpool to visit my son & daughter in law to play badminton. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. The staff gave us a tour of the Gym and other facilities even though they were about to close. Hannah was especially kind in showing support to my pregnant daughter in law. Thankyou Hannah!
Positive experience: Decent sports centre steeped in memories
Fantastic experience: Good facilities and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: This is always a good venue for party hire not only sports facilities. Good parking although limited on match and practice days. Be aware of priority access on Chalky Road, it gets somewhat congested and awkward on exiting the centre.
Negative experience: Experience was awfull specially customer service was very disappointing and really diminished my expectations. The two so called mangers(Ollie and Karen) showed of lack of understanding of their job roles overcharging and giving different price on two different occasions.I wouldn’t ever recommend attending this sports center your better of playing outside in any weather conditions.(very disappointed)….
Negative experience: Customer service really needs to be better. Miscommunication and the inability to pay attention to the users.
Fantastic experience: Great place
Fantastic experience: Great for all occasions
Fantastic experience: Brilliant sports complex. Clubs are brilliant for adults and kids
Positive experience: Good

Fantastic experience: I do PE there.
Positive experience: Small but reasonabley well equipment gym with helpful staff. Few machines I'd like to see in there but all the basics are covered band well priced membership if you wait till there's a deal on. Can get very busy so worth checking when quiet times are.
Negative experience: horrible staffs never have a birthday party here
Fantastic experience: Clean well maintained facilities, friendly staff an asset to the community!
Fantastic experience: Great place. Very friendly and accommodating
Fantastic experience: Five star for children's birthday party. Only there a short while but facilities looked good.
Fantastic experience: Very nice and clean Sport Centre
Positive experience: Went to a kiddies 3rd birthday party there with our toddler and baby. Was really good, they had a bouncy castle and a little play area jungle gym set up going on for the wee scamps. I don't think they provided the food, but nonetheless I got the impression. It was pretty good value from the parents of the child who's party it was.
Fantastic experience: Relaxed environment for playing Snooker
Positive experience: Good standard sports centre! Helpful and friendly staff with excellent facilities.
Positive experience: Nice place
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Negative experience: Hockey goals are terrible and the pitch isn't great
Fantastic experience: portslade hedgehoppers
Positive experience: Watching indoor cricket, rubbish view through netting and no scoreboard, you would think that as this is a regular event that they could make some investment
Positive experience: My daughter enjoyed herself at her first toddler gym session.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place to do most of the sports.
Fantastic experience: Had a party here today very well organized clean tidy good staff and a sensible price
Positive experience: Good sport centre. Shame no swimming pool. Staff friendly.
Fantastic experience: They had many facilities and all staff very friendly and welcoming,
Positive experience: A nice little centre for people to use, although could do with a bit of a spruce up.
Positive experience: Nice people and good facilities.
Fantastic experience: Stops me being fat
Positive experience: Nice gym, not that big but there's enough equipment on hand to allow you a good and varied workout. No poseurs or meatheads either which is a result. Decent quality equipment which is kept in good condition and cleaned regularly. PTs regularly in the small office who are happy to help you out with advice on nutrition or techniques.
Positive experience: It's OK but not great facilities dated
Fantastic experience: I have now been to numerous parties for 3-5 year olds in the Whittaker room at the sports centre as well as hiring it myself for my son's birthday - ideal venue.
Positive experience: c. v. . 6k . . ,,,
Positive experience: Very tired looking now
Negative experience: I’d just like to comment how well my nieces birthday party went where we booked out a hall for soft play in the Portslade sports centre. The children had a great time! All until towards the end where, without any communication or prior warning, the party was rudely and abruptly stopped where two members of staff came into the hall with no communication and just started to deflate the bouncy castle with still two children sat on it, then again, without any communication started banging chairs away and folding up tables whilst some of the children and parents were still sitting at the tables. Not once did the members of staff come over and politely say they had to tidy ready for another party, which we were aware of and were tidying up ourselves. However the staff made some of our guests feel very uncomfortable and commented on their attitude and my sister apologised to other parents on their behaviour. I think the attitude of the two members of staff was extremely rude and completely unnecessary, will be unlikely to use this venue again.
Positive experience: Nice place. Sports hall, squash, badminton, tabletennis, big activity room, parking and whatever I haven't seen.
Positive experience: Astro is to sandy
