Our comment from FitFit UK about Total Fitness Bolton:

Total Fitness Bolton is a spacious and well-equipped gym located in Bolton, United Kingdom. Many users appreciate the friendly atmosphere and the variety of facilities available, which include a large pool, sauna, steam room, and hydrotherapy pool. Members have expressed satisfaction with the spacious layout and the cleanliness of the gym, with mentions of well-maintained changing rooms and a welcoming staff.

Positive aspects highlighted by members include:

  • Spacious environment - Plenty of space and equipment, making it less crowded.
  • Friendly staff - Many members report helpful and accommodating staff.
  • Diverse facilities - Access to various pools and fitness classes, making it suitable for families and individuals alike.
  • Hydrotherapy and premium amenities - Popular among members who value relaxation and recovery options.

However, there are also several areas for improvement. Some users have reported issues with the cleanliness of the facilities, particularly in the changing rooms and showers. Instances of unresponsive staff and inconsistent access to certain amenities, like the sauna and steam room, have also been noted. Additionally, customer service has received criticism for being unhelpful and dismissive when concerns are raised.

Overall, while Total Fitness Bolton offers a wide range of facilities and has a large, welcoming space, it would benefit from addressing current cleanliness and customer service issues to enhance member satisfaction further.

Total Fitness Bolton: Opinions

Fantastic experience: It's spacious and everyone is nice

Negative experience: I pay for 3 family memberships and have been customer for years. My son was home from University and we asked the club whether he could join us for a game of table tennis. Two different responses but both negative. Spoke to a manager who claimed that money needs to change hands otherwise the insurance is not valid. Utter rubbish - seen loads of people buzzed in before and also have had previous okays to do this the odd time. So short sighted and no common sense. They will lose 3 memberships for the sake of 30 min table tennis. No goodwill or discretion. Will take our business to a better run more friendly place.

Negative experience: I am incredibly frustrated and disappointed with my experience at Total Fitness Bolton. Today, I raised a serious concern with Olivia at reception about the sauna and steam room closing times. I was told these facilities close 15 minutes before the club closes, but over the past week, they have consistently been shutting down 30 minutes early. When I pointed this out, Olivia had absolutely nothing to say and just kept repeating, "It’s not something we can control." This response was dismissive and showed a complete lack of accountability. When I asked to speak to the manager to resolve this issue, Olivia conveniently claimed they were in a meeting. I then asked for the names of the managers I could speak with during my next visit, and shockingly, she claimed she didn’t know who the manager was that day and therefore couldn’t provide any names. This is absolutely unacceptable. To make matters worse, we don’t receive any partial refund for the facilities closing ahead of the advertised times. As a dad of three with limited free time, I can only attend the gym around an hour before closing. If this practice of shutting down the sauna and steam room 30 minutes early continues, I will always lose out on being able to use these facilities. This is incredibly frustrating and feels like a waste of my membership fees. Not only does it seem like staff are not on the same page about operational timings, but the lack of transparency and unwillingness to escalate a genuine concern to someone in charge is appalling. If the facilities are not running according to the advertised schedule and the staff cannot or will not address member complaints, what exactly am I paying for? Total Fitness Bolton needs to seriously reconsider its approach to customer service and operational integrity. I would not recommend this gym to anyone who expects consistency or accountability from their service provider.

Negative experience: I joined total fitness (Bolton branch) a month ago, drawn to its premium facilities like the sauna and jacuzzi, which were a key factor in my decision. However, in the short time I’ve been a member, these amenities have been out of service on four separate occasions, making them inaccessible for a significant portion of my membership. This has been incredibly frustrating, especially given the high cost of the gym. I signed up expecting reliable access to the full range of facilities, but the repeated downtime of the sauna and jacuzzi feels like a breach of the value promised. It’s disappointing and makes me question whether the membership is worth the price.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member for several months now and I love going to the classes. So far I’ve tried body pump, Dancefit, Zumba and Yoga. Still got other classes on my list, like Spin which I will attempt when I’ve improved my fitness level. The changing rooms are nicely fitted out and very clean. The hydrotherapy pool looks amazing and I’ll be trying it out when I buy a swimming costume. Definitely worth the membership price when compared to similar health clubs.

Fantastic experience: Like it

Negative experience: Giving it a very generous 2, the facilities are good but dated and falling apart. Nice pool facilities but that's about it. The main issue is how dirty everything is, the mens changing room is always dirty no matter what time, sinks are full of hair from people shaving, showers have grime all around the edges and on the wall, the ceiling is rank, the toilets are usually disgusting and on more than one occasion I've seen them covered in blood or vomit. It has been this way for a long time and I doubt any customer feedback will change it at this point, if it doesn't improve I'll be looking elsewhere

Negative experience: I’m currently using Bolton TF because Walkden poolside is closed due to renovation…Bolton TF is a disgrace layout is terrible free weights area is dirty and tiny, dumbbell’s everywhere paper towels everywhere on the floor no staff upstairs..equipment not the best pins missing went to put a weight on one of the ab machines today the bar where the weight would usually go wasn’t there … Showers are terrible you literally have to touch the wall to get under the shower because the pressure is so bad I put my foot down the drain because you’re actually stood on it … Poolside fountain is warm I asked a member of staff but he wasn’t interested telling me “well every one is using it” needs a decent manager to come in and sort the lazy staff out cannot wait for Walkden to be sorted …feel for the members who have to put up with this at Bolton it’s unacceptable….

Negative experience: Smelly old gym. Ancient dirty and unkempt equipment. I wouldn't recommend the sauna/steam room just in case you catch some dangerous bugs.

Julia Bulina 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Gym is very spacious, so many equipment . Many treadmils and elliptical machines! Not busy gym. Sauna, steaming, swimming, hydropool .

Positive experience: We had an enjoyable time here. The upstairs gym is very well supplied and there is a smaller downstairs area for families to work out together. The pool is a good size and there are the desirable extras such as sauna and steam room. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only issue for us was the family changing area which is very small with no toilet. I would recommend.

Negative experience: Actually disappointed with the customer service. Little to no understanding whatsoever of individual circumstances. Turnstile is a pile of rubbish aswell! Fix it!

ATK 86 1 year ago

Negative experience: Enquired about a guest pass to help a mate out who had recently signed up to a membership here, told them I probably wouldn't be signing up as I live in a different area, so was honest. Was informed by Jordan it will be £20 not free. Almost a month's membership at my gym, why advertise free guest passes then change the rules?

Liam Moore 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Impressive gym all around, the only thing what let’s it down are the showers

Zen 1 year ago

Positive experience: OK gym, £50pm adult membership, most annoying gripe is there is no way to control temp of showers, even £12pm gyms have this option, shower 1 will be pumping out ice cubes but shower 2 next to it will be hotter than lava. Gym itself is large and airy, equipment is in OK condition, free weights aren't organised so you have to go searching for the weight you need. Plenty of free weight based machines but again need to search for correct plates. There is also a fair number of machines with integrated weights, most seem to work fine but are a little worn. Tonnes of cardio equipment but seem mishmash of different makes and models and condition. Main attraction is the three pools which is why it costs so much. Main pool is wide enough for multiple swim lanes (four or five), children pool is nice and heated and hydro pool is very large and great for post workout relaxation.

Negative experience: Fortunately I am a member of TF at another club where there are no issues and I enjoy it very much. TF Bolton (where I sometimes visit on my travels) is horrendous in comparison…all the carpet on the gym floor is grubby and lifting, most of the machines are dated and pins either missing or do not insert correctly. The free weight area is the worst I have seen in any gym, free weights lying about everywhere and a huge mess. I am saddened to even leave 1 star, it should be 0.

Fantastic experience: I recently joined the gym. The staff is very helpful and the area is huge and not crowded! I recommend it !

Danny Jones 1 year ago

Negative experience: The Staff are so rude. I've never known a group of people work in the service industry and be allowed to act this way. Why work with people if you don't like them? Walking through reception and there's 6 members of staff sniggering, yet not one even acknowledges that you exist. Or the trainers who like to film themselves constantly with you in the background. Errr no thanks. The gyms equipment is dated. Only two cable machines which people spend their entire workout on. Lots of ripped carpets and missing pins. The equipment is filthy. The sauna/pool is used by lots of smelly men, who do not shower, and go straight in the water after working out. So they are washing in the water you are in..Nice.. it's a really good gym if you like to see men blow drying their feet and hairs in their private areas with the hair dryers that should be only for your head hair.

Positive experience: Nice gym, brill facilities but customer service isn’t great.. all for signing people up for memberships in a hurry but cancelling memberships becomes a long problematic process. Cashless, card only venue. Did have a rota in place and a kids club but the kids club ended up being cancelled during our 12 month gym membership meaning we couldn’t use the gym while our children were with us... mainly went with Total Fitness as they offered this service HOWEVER they put things right in the end by refunding part of the membership due to the services being withdrawn.

Positive experience: Went for the daily pass , not bad then big swimming pool it's quite cold compared to the one you get the hydromassage. So far a good experience, but 20 pounds it's a bit overpriced. Yeah sure you can use the gym and the swimming pool but realist they should charge 10 for each and give you the chance just to choose one of it, that would make it fair; and maybe offer a packages to use both like 15/18 pounds .

Negative experience: Robbing set of cu-ts , say I've signed up for a year's membership, there must be some trick on the website that confuses folk , I work away so would not sign up for that , shame because I really enjoyed it there and it helped me get on my feet , why they could not just cancel it is a poor show .

Negative experience: For potential members who want to attend classes: The timetable of classes is a big big secret. I could not get it for 2 weeks. For different reasons. They just can read it to you. (With mistakes of course, so when I came to Pilates it was at another time and another studio) Anyway the did not allow to make photo of their screen with time table They will not give you a physical copy Can’t send you an email etc. I already came there in person twice to get it. Nothing I asked why it is so secret They gave me different versions “Manager was ill” last version And Im still believe they just don’t want to give you timetable for some secret reasons Now I was waiting for 2 weeks for timetable And got the call with question if I have decided to become a member. I answered that still waiting for a timetable from them first to manage my work schedule first. And they again and again told me that will show me it only when I come there. And I know they will not. They just want to sell you membership and don’t care if you are happy. When E. called to me, he didn’t let me say a word. always trying to interrupt, and eventually shouted something and hung up. Some kind of passive aggressive. It’s not ok.

Negative experience: Staff don't really care about you. When I have a query they just brush it aside rudely. Also there are individuals who are asking staff to break lockers to say its there's but its not. The staff don't even have any sort of procedures and putting another individuals valuables at risk. For example, if someone asks to break there locker they should first mention whats in the locker. But I've seen staff with my own eyes break lockers and people steal the valuables in front of my own eyes.

Negative experience: I have been going to this gym for 4 months now and I have never witnessed such annoyance as I have today. This woman (sarah i think her name is.) Decides to BLEACH the steam room shutting it down for a good 20 minutes all because someone put olbas oil inside of it using the excuse of "someone might be allergic" yes because olbas oil is ten times more toxic than BLEACH isn't it! Disgraceful!

Mo Salah 1 year ago

Negative experience: The gym used to be so good especially cleaning wise in the changing rooms but recently it has been really dirty with hair and tiles not properly washed. The sauna 1 of the staff tends to turn it off before closing team an hour earlier. Recently equipments have missing clips. This gym used to be so good before but it's just fallen below standards recently. Just a change I recommend is to just be more efficient it's still the best gym out there but with more efficiency it can be a lot better. Instead of seeing improvements we're seeing it go downhill. I recommend more cleaners downstairs I only see 1 person I don't know his name but he tries his best. Should give him more support.!

Mario Espinosa 1 year ago

Negative experience: They decided randomly one day (no warning) to take away the boxing ring and 2 out of the 3 punch bags. When anyone tries to complain the old bitter women manager has said to everyone “go to a boxing gym then” what??? There’s now 100’s of people trying to use 1 punch bag instead of 3. I had to stop swimming at this place due to the zero control over the “fast/medium” pace lanes with old people just walking in them. So now, I can’t swim at this place and now can’t hit the punch bag? I know of at least 6 people who have cancelled their membership due to taking away the bags so good move as usual from that wrinkled bitter manager well done

Positive experience: I have used their BMI machine several times and I have experienced the machine not working properly. When I reported this to the manager Eve she wasn't very kind, polite or helpful about it. She failed to tell me the machine belongs to a third party and when I rang to put in a complaint she was on the phone and said 'Now you know'. For the price paid we expect staff to be friendly which they are apart from the manager very concerning indeed.

Positive experience: It was one of the best gyms in the area, in the last months ( since after Covid ) it would seem that a lot of people joined the gym that would slam the weights like there is a contest(there for it led to the equipment to be in a bad shape) , show up in slippers and leave gym bags all over the gym floor not to mention that shouting it became a sport … and yet the staff doesn’t seem to notice it… disappointed really. I been a member for more than 3 years so far and It used to be my favourite gym to go to. Please bring back the standards!

Negative experience: Firstly I was ver disappointed in the way me and my family were treated. On arrival she said she could not let us in the building with 3 children and I would have to wait in the waiting area until my husband arrives. I then had to ask why is would not be OK to wait in the cafe and play area for kids. .she then said ok yes you can do that. At the centre she was constantly staring at me as to what me and the children were doing. This made me feel very uncomfortable, she approached me again and said I cannot leave my children unattended when all my children were in my sight. She then came to the pool area and again was staring at me and my family whilst we were in the pool. At the pool the life guard said we need to be out of the pool by 8. We said ok. When is was 8pm the life guard reminded us its 8pm and we got out of the pool and went in the changing rooms. The manager Holie then came to find me and my children in the changing area, she waited until I came out of the showers with my towel on and she said to me that we need to leave straight away. Again I was very uncomfortable with this, her mannerism and attitude was very rude and making us feel not welcome at the centre. I said ok I am leaving the centre. The second time 5 minutes later she came again and said your son is waiting outside the changing cubicle. So I responded and said ok, she said he not allowed to wait for you here under 8 not allowed. My son was 9 and he came yo give me a hand with bags and toddler. Anyway she sent him away to dad. The third time she came again 5 minutes later and I was walking to my locker and getting a nappy out for my baby. Again she said I need to leave the building right now. My toddler was not dressed nor had nappy on. I was trying my best to get things done quickly as possible but she was getting me very angry by the constantly pestering me. At this point she made me very angry. I understand the rules and they only need explaining once I can speak and read English. I felt she had an issue that I was asian women in hijaab,, who didnt know anything. How can a staff member treat there customers like this. I am so upset and disappointed by todays treatment. I have never experienced this before with any other member of staff. I've been a member for years and go to whitefield total fitness. It just happen that I was in Bolton so thought we use gym here. I won't be using the Bolton gym again and will be making a complaint to the head office too.

Positive experience: Really good gym and facilities however not on the cheap side. I would expect the machines to be upgraded and better usage of the enormous gym floor , especially due to the increased prices of membership. Been a member for a year and I have enjoyed being here, as I touched on before, only improvement imo is to be made on equipment as everything seems outdated.

Rafal 3 years ago

Negative experience: Unfortunately, many members do not follow the rules. Today someone left feces on the floor in the shower. This dirty person also left an empty bottle that was probably used for washing. That's why someone should check cleanliness regularly! Trimming the beard in changing room, shaving in the bathroom, emptying the nose loudly in the shower, drying dirty and stinky T-shirts in the sauna in the changing room are everyday activities. People use the sauna and immediately go to the jacuzzi or swimming pool, without a shower. This is disgusting. They drink water straight from the tap, instead of pouring it into bottles. These are just a few examples. Nobody is watching this. Nobody care about it.

Negative experience: Really looking forward to a Boxing circuit class @ 9:30 this morning, tho apprehensive as would have been 1st boxing class, Got there 10 minutes early on ‘Gym floor’ - always a bit of a vague meeting point. When it got to 9:30, an instructor advised me to check with reception. Went downstairs & Reception sent me back upstairs. Still no sign of class Back down again to Reception again and then back upstairs this time accompanied with a receptionist (who advised me bags not allowed on gym floor). She checked with another instructor who advised us class not on, due to a change in schedule. I could attend a different class……. Nothing to do with boxing circuits. Why does the system allow me to book a non-existing class?? Really not happy & think I’ve made a massive mistake joining TF Bolton

Negative experience: Staff are so rude and unfriendly and make children very unwelcome. I have asked several times for a manager to speak to and they haven’t bothered to get in touch. Especially rude is the supervisor lady at the pool who seems to read out all the rules and regs as soon as she sees a phone beeping! John Jackson 3 years ago

Negative experience: I've been a member at TF Bolton since it first opened. The club's standards have been dropping year on year and the customer service too. The hydro pool, sauna, steam rooms are rarely hot. There is a lack of staff at poolside meaning if you bring your kids then they can't use the heated small pool, they have to use the cold big pool. The showers are always cold/Luke warm apart from the disabled shower. Surely if the disabled shower is warm the boiler is in working order and the other showers can be made warmer. To top it all off, as of Jan 2022, guest passes are no longer usable. So to bring a guest you need to pay £15 to use a cold pool and cold showers. Don't waste your money, try out the other gyms.

Positive experience: Good gym with decent facilities. Plenty of space in the upper gym which I prefer. Really like the hydrotherapy pool situated where there's lots of natural light through the many windows, very relaxing!! I usually go to the Walkden TF but might have a few trips further afield to Bolton in the future....
