Negative experience: The club was closing at 4pm despite the app and google being updated opening till 6pm - came all the way. It’s like arriving to a hotel which is overbooked, with no alternative provided - “Stranded”, again. It’s just poor service - we won’t get compensated for the travel cost or this brilliant start into the first day of the year nor the missed relaxation prior the office starts again. Rising costs and repeated poor admin the front team needs sorting. Or will we get a little discount on our monthly fees? I guess: NO! Faced a crowd of 6-8 people all piling up at the desk and the poor Duty Manager had to take the hit. Very poor customer service due to poor management/ organisation skills, lack of double check and empowerment - I can get on and on. This has happened in the past a few years back and is not acceptable as a repeated issue.
Fantastic experience: I love Virgin Active Strand. Always clean, instructors and classes are top (regular at reformer Pilates, Pilates athletic, strength and conditioning). The spa area has a great atmosphere. And the lounge is a great addition to do some work in between sessions
Negative experience: I walked in hoping to have a day swim. You wouldn't believe they don't have a single entry. Since I travel the world and I never stay in one place more than a couple of days, I asked if they have a subscription where I can enter any center of same company, not even that... Just unbelievable.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been loving my membership at Virgin Active! Joined a few months back and the staff are lovely, great facilities too- always very clean. Started adult swimming lessons 1-1 and have made lots of progress with my instructor Allon who’s great, highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: I am new to swimming and recently took up some classes with swim class instructor Allon who has been great. From the first moment on, he’s got this energy and personality which makes you trust him straight away. Really kind, patient and a great instructor who encourages you, while supporting you at the same time. Excited about my weekly classes! The gym is also great, plenty of equipment and space, great strength and conditioning and spin classes too.

Fantastic experience: Firstly the staff at The Strand branch are so friendly, helpful, polite and just happy! Have to say the same for the Streatham branch too :) Club is very well maintained. Never any machines out of order, all works perfectly. The classes are excellent. Particularly Reformer and Mat Pilates. Not intimidating at all with a nice warm friendly atmosphere. Can't fault anything :)

Negative experience: Dear Virgin Active Team, I am a regular member of Virgin Active. Today, in the afternoon of 16/09, I visited your Strand club and was extremely disappointed with the service I received at the reception. Upon arrival, I kindly asked the reception staff if they could hold onto a small bag for me during my workout, as it didn’t fit in my locker. Unfortunately, I was told that this wasn’t possible, without any offer of an alternative solution. Later, after using the sauna, I requested an extra towel for my shower and explained that my towel had fallen to the floor, making it unusable. Despite explaining that I am a loyal member, the receptionist rudely insisted that the policy only allows for a maximum of two towels. I found this response unprofessional and dismissive. After my repeated request, and despite her rude tone, she reluctantly handed me the towel without further comment. I had initially planned to bring two friends with me as guests, hoping to make a referral, but after today’s experience, I’m reconsidering that decision. Additionally, while I do have the names of those involved, I prefer not to disclose them at this time, as I believe in giving people the chance to improve. However, I sincerely hope that measures will be taken to improve the overall customer service at this location. Negative experience: Terrible service and facilities. Increased the price by 50% and offered a worse experience. App wouldn’t even allow me to cancel nor was there any information on their website. Absolutely useless. Will be reporting to the financial ombudsman.
Negative experience: Obnoxious loud music on the gym floor (85 decibels) with annoying mic'd up announcer every single day from 6-6:45. Miserable experience

Negative experience: Horrible gym So many issues and it’s only getting worse We have been waiting to fix the air conditioning in spinning studio and class studio for over two month already I can not do any classes, because it’s too hot and due to broken airco it’s smells like fish and chips from the hotels nearby. The broken glass in the spinning room no one is fixing and it’s just separated by the ugly red fence The emergence button in sauna is not working for ages. It’s not like I need it, but there is sign that they are working on it since I signed in since last year. Few showers are not working for a year. They don’t supply plastic bags anymore, because they say they go green and l they only give one towel per person, saying that there is supplier issue but I am pretty sure they are just trying to save some money The shampoo and conditioner are always empty Shower walls and ceiling are covered y mould. But the have a person sitting in the swimming pool and watching. Never seen something like this in my live! The pool is like 1.60 meters max! Who are they watching? Today I came to exercise and someone was painting something in the gym area and the smell was so strong than after 10 min I got sick and had to go home. I felt sick and had a headache afterwards They didn’t even bother to to do in the closing times and ventilate the area properly I can not do any classes for more than two month already and now I can’t even use the gym. The price is 150 pounds per month btw! So if you want to do your workout and inhale paint and fish and ships please welcome to Virgin Strand!
Positive experience: This review is a bit overdue. Last month, I received such great customer service from Allon, the lifeguard on duty. I've been reluctant to use the swimming pool as in most gyms it’s not well maintained. I saw Allon testing the water with a large testing case and I approached him and he explained in such detail the testing process and how often its carried out. This reassured me that its well maintained and thanks to this conversation, I decided to use the pool going forward. +Positives+ + Good location + Good reformer studio with a great instructor namely Vanda. -Negatives- -Perhaps larger visible signs need to be displayed on the actual glass doors of the sauna and steam rooms instructing people to shower before using the spa facilities. It happens far too often and this is something that other VA branches need to follow too. The sauna can create a really foul smell if someone who has come straight from a sweaty gym workout and has not showered before using the spa facilities The smell lingers for ages. Staff need to enforce such rules including showering before using the pool.

Negative experience: Very disappointed. We 'ate in' I don't think the piece of fish I finally received was, in fact, cod! Also - there was a heavy smell of oil coming from the kitchen which spoiled what little pleasure I got from eating. I've been in there before and not had any prior problems! The staff have changed since then so perhaps that's why my experience was under par.

Negative experience: For someone who mostly comes for the classes it feels a bit like the wheels are coming off at Virgin Active Strand. In spite of Virgin being quite a premium gym brand, they recently opted to stop paying for licensed music and all classes are now delivered to horrible canned music that sounds either like you’re in an elevator or a cheap computer game, depending on the vibe of the class. No more good tunes, which is so import when you work out. Some of the best instructors have left because they can’t deal with the music situation. The stinginess to pay for decent music is really jarring with the club that’s otherwise quite nice. Added to that, about six months ago the class schedule was reduced dramatically. Classes like boxing, HIIT and body pump all disappeared, the studio mostly empty except for the occasional yoga class. They added Reformer, which is great but impossible to book due to high demand. All in all, you have much fewer classes, good instructors have left, the music is shitty, but you’re paying the same fee. Seems like Virgin is taking its customers for granted. I can’t recommend this club anymore and I’ll be looking elsewhere when my contract ends. Edit: Four months later, the music is still rubbish and the cancelled classes are still not back. I left.

Fantastic experience: I had training session with Luana Badame which absolutely great P.T I had good sport back ground , but in terms of fitness , I felt like I need a coach after 2 sessions , my technique to lift weight improved , feel more confident more will to training , and my body is changing. 5 stars rated . She got great Knowledge, balanced with the learner (to know the right load can fit with your strength) motivators to move forward and progress, and friendly .

Negative experience: Very Poor on-boarding process. tried to upgrade my membership to a premium facility as the Strand gym is far too busy and cant book the classes due to being over booked. The upgrading process is as painful as leg day!

Negative experience: I have joined this gym not even a month ago counting on high level of customer service but I must say I have received none of it. The reception team is barly saying hello when you enter, they re miserable and unhelpful. I come to the gym often BEFORE my work as I often work in the afternoons, which means I am restricted time wise. On several occasions I wanted to get myself coffee from a coffee machine which is on the floor ( well advertised to me during my initial sign in visit!) And on several occasions it wasn't working. It can be frustrating when you have only some time left before you leave and count on nice coffee before work and you have to struggle with coffee machine instead of relaxing. Yesterday I have reported it to the staff. ( yet again) they have sent a manager. He came in and looked at me saying " oh it's you again, let's see what you ve done" suggesting it was me that did something wrong with the machine .... I've looked at him and politely told him:" it's not me, it's the machine that's broken yet again. Last time he couldn't make it work neither ) He tried to press the buttons and make it work but yet again the card reader wasn't working. I wouldn't even mind if it was broken but it would be nice to have a note on it so you know you can't use it and in my case I wouldn't have set up myself in the sofa with allmy staff but quickly left to Costa ( to get some coffee before work). I did tell him that but he just said that lots of people use it and thats why it doesn't work!...then he purred me coffee without using the card charger ( which was obviously broken) and said: " well you got a free coffee out of it so its fine with a very nonshalant attitude...I was stunned! In the gym of this caiber you should make sure everything works perfectly and if you offer coffee service the machine should be checked on regular basis. If you fail to check it properly and the client is telling you it happened yet again (!!!) you definetly don't treat her like a nuisance. I don't care for a free coffee but an appropriate service to pretty pricy membership price I pay... With this kind of attitude from the manager I am not surprised the reception staff is so badly trainned. I don't think i will be continuing my memership. I have received better customer service in gyms of much lower caliber.

Negative experience: Firstly it should be noted here that the staff are a credit to the organisation and could not be more helpful. However, unfortunately this is not backed up by investment in this facility. The mens showers contain mould and have done for a good few months. The cross trainers and bikes are now very very dated and could do with an upgrade, this morning the two bigger ones were out of use. Only one of the many cleaning stations on the gym floor had paper towels to clean equipment. It’s a great location with great staff. But it needs some TLC from the company to bring it into 2024.

Fantastic experience: Having been a member of gyms for 30 years I have a very keen eye for what makes a Gym Good or Bad. Virgin Active @Strand has recently listened to my feedback and surprisingly, actions were taken almost immediately. The Gym has undergone some recent upgrades and some heavy maintenance. However @VirginActive HQ - You have been aware of the Steam Room issues for over 10, years and its time you spent some money and put new system in. The money you've spent on maintenance would've paid for this already ;-) maybe twice over .... However, no matter how nice a gym is, if it's staffed badly it will soon lose its appeal and the novelty will wear off. @Strand has a great team right now that is making the place tick correctly and pleasantly. Aaron, Marteja, Magda, Jama, Cara, Andrew, Aisha, Allon, John, Carl and not forgetting the man that keeps everything running in this place Maintenance man Mitch. They call him Mitch cause he's Mitchelin Star. The whole team is great, so if I have missed anyone, forgive me. I've only had one coffee so far :-o @Virgin HQ - This team is great and the synergy's good and works very well - its down to you to keep them... Now put your hands in your pockets and get that steam room sorted. I am speaking on behalf of most people that use it, I assure you. Do a member survey, I'm know it will support this!! Negative experience: I am compelled to share my recent disappointing experience with Virgin Active Strand. Despite my initial enthusiasm to engage in yoga classes, the gym's failure to provide an acceptable level of service has left me disheartened. Yesterday, upon arriving for my yoga class, I was shocked to find the room temperature at a chilly 14 degrees Celsius, well below the recommended range of 21-24 degrees. This oversight not only demonstrated a lack of consideration for members' well-being but also posed potential risks to our health. What added to my frustration was the team's conscious decision to proceed with the class without informing members about the inadequate room conditions. As a gym manager, one would expect a commitment to maintaining suitable environments for various disciplines. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The unprofessional and disrespectful behavior, especially from Guile Fernandez, who neglected to notify members in advance, further marred my experience. As someone who invests time and effort in attending classes, being unable to participate due to unsuitable and potentially harmful conditions was truly disheartening. This unfortunate incident not only left me extremely upset but also resulted in my inability to use the gym facilities on consecutive days. Considering these circumstances, I feel compelled to make potential members aware of the gym's policies before they decide to join. I have communicated my concerns directly to Virgin Active Strand, expressing my disappointment and seeking feedback on the actions they plan to take to address this issue. I hope this review serves as a cautionary note for others considering membership at Virgin Active Strand.

Positive experience: Staff here are very helpful The pool and spa area are all in 1 area, which I like. Pool is for swimming only, so it doesn't shut for Aqua classes during the off peak time. Everywhere is clean and tidy or being cleaned. Great space for R&R. Well be visiting again.

Fantastic experience: This is the best gym around these parts, where the young and beautiful people of the West End go to work out. Shout out to Rhona for her inspiring PT sessions which have given me bulging muscles. Note to management - please DO NOT revamp the gym like your Wimbledon / Wandsworth gyms with no cable machines and all those squat racks – they take up too much space.
Negative experience: There's more airflow on the central line in June than there is in this gym. It is always so hot & stuffy. I've raised this with management loads of times and nothing is ever done about it. I'm quite concerned when winter rolls around that the lack of airflow is going to lead to more colds & flu bugs being shared in the air. If my office wasn't in the same building I would find another gym because the lack of airflow and general cleanliness of the gym is really not good (and with the price we pay it should be much better). I would not recommend this gym, there must be other options nearby that are better

Negative experience: I’ve been a membership of Virgin Active for a while but the receptionist at here was worst in the other virgin’s gym. Her attitude was arrogant and not friendly at all. If you have choice to select the location, I would highly recommend to go different location one!

Negative experience: I've been a member at Virgin Active Strand for a while, but my recent experiences have left me thoroughly disappointed. The deteriorating state of the facilities and the lack of action from the management have prompted me to write this review. The cleanliness of the place is appalling. The jacuzzi hasn't seen a cleaning session in months and it's covered in what appears to be soil or sand. The benches are sticky and visibly dirty, raising concerns about hygiene and potential health hazards. The lockers are always dusty and the male changing room floors are covered in filth. The problems extend beyond the cleanliness: the men's changing rooms have been experiencing issues with the showers, with cold water flowing intermittently, and this resulted in two cold showers. Moreover, the showers' soap dispensers are never refilled or must systematically run out right before my visit. Numerous lockers are broken or defective and, on three occasions, I had to seek staff assistance to open my faulty locker. This kind of inconvenience is unacceptable for a gym of this caliber. The Boditrax machine, a vital tool for tracking progress, is often out of service. I have raised the health hazard concerns with the reception staff more than a month ago, but no action has been taken. I have then formally complained to the Virgin Active head office through their app, but no response has been received. For this reason, I have decided to terminate my contract and join a cheaper, but cleaner gym in the area.

Negative experience: I didn't like at all the way one of the employees talked to me when I took a picture of the pool. There was no one at the pool, but I understand that rule. I just didn't like the way he spoke to me, it was very rude. It was my first day at the gym. I could understand if it wasn't the first time I'd done that, but in my case it was. I deleted and realize it's not the best thing to take pictures of the pool (even if there was no one in the picture) and I won't do it again, but come on, there's a way to talk to people. He was very close to me when he was talking, he was freaking out when he was talking, I really felt uncomfortable. Please, reconsider the way you talk to people.
Positive experience: The location of the gym is fantastic. The place looks modern, clean and well thought out. The gym area seems great with lots of equipment and enough space for workouts. I haven't tried the fitness classes but they seem very good. The pool and spa area also look modern and clean. The Sauna is fantastic! However, there are quite a few issues to improve on: - The pool is great but too small - The Jacuzzi is big and looks great but the water was not warm enough and I had to wait until there was a green light apparently for the jets to start working. After 5 min, they didn't so didn't get to enjoy it - The Steam room is not steamy and hot enough which means it is a little pointless - The floor of the changing rooms is very slippery and the changing rooms would benefit from a little more space - The showers did not have hot water (I tried 3 different ones), the pressure is a little weak. - I went on a Monday evening and the whole gym was quite busy which makes it less relaxing Overall, it is a good place but there are a lot of small things but important things they need to improve on which would me give it 4 stars instead of 3 stars.
Negative experience: My self and 10 of our work colleagues were planning on joining Virgin Active on the Strand, but coincidentally we had a terrible experience with the attitude of 2 staff in the reception/membership team and their attitude regarding something else. I was VERY disappointed with the reception and membership team....obviously all that matters to them is their targets and money....disappointing considering this is Virgin who always advertise on tv as being an "all-inclusive non discriminative brand"? Perhaps teach the gentleman with an American/canadian accent on your reception another lady who's name started with an A on the membership phone line some manners and decentcy and about your brand values of Virgin being a "caring brand" ? I work for a charitable Wildlife Protection organisation and we work for free to save any Wildlife across London that is suffering. We do this to practice compassion....something your team lacks. We have a severe lack of volunteers in your area and we had a report of an injured and suffering seagul outside your door and so I called to ask in one of your team could check on him for us, most businesses help....but virgin? The Canadian/American sounding man on reception was EXCEPTIONALLY careless and rude saying "why should we care about a seagul as it's not an endangered species"....I explained all animals regardless of being endangered feel pain...so if he could check we'd be very grateful, to which he hung up on me...I called up again to explain and he hung up as soon as I said who I was, then I called again and the lady who works in the membership/reception team whos name starts with A answered and hung up as soon as I said it was about an injured bird outside their branch....and these experiences made me and 9 colleagues who were plannong to join this club decide against joining ever. This is unacceptable for a leading brand that promoted themselves as "caring"? Is it acceptable for a reception team to be so rude? Is it acceptable for them to hang up several times when I was only asking from our Wildlife charity to check outside their door? Is that too much to ask in todays world? It's disgusting and disappointing and I will never recommend your gyms to anyone only because of this attitude. This was an innocent animal left suffering bleeding on the pavement outside the virgin active gym in the strand as the staff just didn't care to even look outside the front door. Nice attitude, well done team at the Strand Virgin Gym. The poor bird suffered in pain, but hopefully you still made your targets as that's all you care about clearly.

Fantastic experience: Good range of training equipment and very spacious, plus excellent studio rooms and pool/spa area. Staff is always helpful and coach Tom has kept me going for three months and counting! If I need to say something I would like to see more hot steam/temperature in the steam room and larger towels, please!. Everything else is a top 5 stars!

Positive experience: The gym itself is quite decent. Studio is small but relaxation area is very comfy and nice. I love that relaxation area and I enjoy my reading time there after workout. The location of the gym is second to none, who wouldn’t love Strand.

Fantastic experience: I’m a big fan of this club. The staff are amazingly friendly. They keep the gym clean & tidy and make for a great environment for a workout. Same goes for the pool area and the showers. Very rare to find things not working too

Negative experience: Meh, I would not make this my home club. Pros- Changing room is spacious with plenty of mirrors and room to get ready. - Showers have good water pressure. - Great central London location, maybe 10 mins from Leicester square. Front of house staff are really lovely and sweet and the cleaners do a good job at keeping the club spotless. Cons: - Lighting in the main section is weird, it's pretty dim in a run down way. - The running machines are Technogym with the old software, which is pretty basic in comparison to the latest models in other Virgin Active gyms. -The jacuzzi is made of steel which is really slippery and the jets are weak. There are minimal machines here, the lack of variety is actually appalling. There is only one of the few machines they do have, making this gym, for me not worth the price tag for a home club. Suitable for a lunchtime sesh but I wouldn't want to be here everyday.

Positive experience: Ok gym equipment. Not a wide range of it, many cardio machines (that get use during peak but otherwise are bit of waste due to space). Expensive. Can get quite busy. Towel service, sauna, steam room, swimming pool are all a plus. Convenient location for me.

Negative experience: Not only the branch facilities are not good enough to justify the ridiculously high rates, their staff is also not helpful at all. Also good luck trying to freeze or cancel your membership! They will take your money regardless! Be cautious of their contracts! Repeating some old reviews to show that there is a long standing pattern of unprofessional behaviour: "Agree with previous reviews about customer service. I had a query about charges on my account after I'd 'frozen' the contract and not only was the membership manager hugely unhelpful, she failed to get in touch for five days. I have since emailed requesting to cancel, and have not had a response yet (I emailed 6 days ago). Have never encountered such poor customer service and I won't be taking out another contract at this gym or any of the others."

Fantastic experience: This seriously was by far the best experience in this gym. I would say it almost has a spa ish feeling to it, mainly, because as I left the gym I honestly felt the most amazing after using the swimming pool area. The place was clean, and the staff was smiley so it indicates a lot. Also they have Molton brown products which made my day it made my hair really shiny and soft!

Negative experience: I don’t like their company rules of requiring visitors to have a UK bank account just to be a member for a week. The guy who assisted me told me all gym facilities have the same rules, where in fact I was able to purchase one week pass at Fitness First without a UK bank account.

Negative experience: Why is the gym still closing at 4pm on wekeend? How this this justify the price ? The gym had a Mircowave to use for members which they got rid of at the r Covid. Now that Covid is officially over where is that facility ? Why is it not brought back? When asked the staff to Microwave my food they said it’s a safety hazard ! Please explain in what world does that make any sense? When asked by staff the rationale behind this they said because if Covid? If Covid Is still a concern why isn’t the gym doing temperature control for everyone that walks in, why aren’t they making guests sanitize their hands when using equipment! I doubt asking someone to microwave my food is safety hazard! Another garbage gym with when garbage customer service! I’ll be making sure my companies corporate membership of the 30 employee that go to VA will be transferred over to Fitness first.
UPDATE: Hello Osman, thank you for taking the time to share your review, which I've discussed with management. Since the current management have been with the Club (since 2020), we've never had a microwave for members due to both Health and Safety reasons and food regulations. In regards to closing at 4pm - it has always been the case on weekends. We are not currently busy enough to justify being open for longer hours. However, opening hours are constantly being reviewed and we will adjust as footfall increases.

Fantastic experience: Asides from the epic name, Jack Daniels is such a friendly and cheerful staff member - he really goes the extra mile and goes out of his way to help gym members. He and the staff are warm, friendly and efficient. The facilities are great here - the lounge area is a luxuriously, spacious area to work too. My husband and I are regular members of this cub. Thank you for a fantastic place to come to work out and relax.

Negative experience: I joined this Virgin Active towards the end of lockdown based on their website and my experience of their clubs in Asia which are superb. Unfortunately the London clubs are rundown and tired with shorter opening hours than some of their competitors and with advertised facilities often unavailable. Vending machines are also overpriced leaving you feeling like an exploited captive audience which you have paid for the privilege of being fleeced. Don’t make the mistake I made – AVOID and join elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: Really good venue, the facilities are great and friendly staff. Can be overwhelmingly busy sometimes but you just have to time your session correctly. They offer an amazing discount for 18-21 users which makes it an even better value. The gym was always very clean with great facilities. I love the fresh towel for showering and the sauna and steam room, very good.

Negative experience: the swimming pool is pretty clean and that especially the classes are fantastic. BUT when I was getting the membership one of the staff called Shah said we have an offer for PT session. if u get 2 sessions you only pay for one and that it includes program for 3 weeks and advice on food and supplement etc but when I saw the PT he said we wont give you any program or diet advice, this is rather an induction session to tell you how to use the facilities. I never went to the second session with them. but I couldn't get my £35 refunded although they didn't expressly say that...
