Our comment from FitFit UK about Abbey Leisure Complex:
Abbey Leisure Complex, located in Cambridge, United Kingdom, is a vibrant community facility offering a variety of fitness and leisure activities suitable for all ages. Visitors appreciate the friendly and professional staff who are dedicated to providing a welcoming atmosphere.
This center boasts a well-maintained swimming pool that is popular with families, particularly for children learning to swim. The learners' pool is frequently noted for its adequate size, although some visitors have reported that the water temperature could be warmer. Additionally, the facility includes a sauna and a small splash area for younger children.
While many users enjoy the diverse range of fitness classes and gym facilities, there are some concerns regarding the size of the gym and the availability of equipment, with some visitors suggesting that it could benefit from restructuring. Feedback about cleanliness in the changing rooms has been mixed, with several users noting that the condition can vary significantly depending on the time of day.
Some drawbacks mentioned include instances of cold water and a lack of sufficient staffing during peak times, which can lead to closures of certain facilities like the pool. However, the management's commitment to keeping the facilities clean has been positively highlighted, as well as the ample parking space available for visitors.
In summary, Abbey Leisure Complex is a well-rounded leisure center that caters effectively to the community's needs, providing a range of activities and a warm environment, despite some areas needing improvement.

Abbey Leisure Complex: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Overall, this is a good place to work out. Staff are friendly and professional and they make the most of the facilities they have at this centre. They close the pool for half an hour numerous times a day to clean and this positively shows - pool area, toilets and changing rooms, gym equipment all seem to get freshened up numerous times a day. This absolutely feels like a facility for the community. Wheelchair users can be lifted into the slow lane to swim and the medium speed lane is extra wide to compensate. The small learners pool always seems animated with youngsters and accompanying adults. The gym is popular and has a lot of equipment. The music is the right volume and not annoying. Steven took great care to design a workout programme for me and it's excellent. This facility hosts the local kayak club, who practice rolls in the pool during dedicated sessions. There are tunnel slides open sometimes by the pool and a little sauna at poolside. There are often swimming lessons in one lane.Tables next to the lobby provide a place to eat snacks. There are some fitness classes that seem popular. Just be sure to check the pool times so you don't turn up to swim when it's closed for cleaning. Good work everyone, making this a vibrant fitness centre for the community.
Fantastic experience: Great for wheelchair users, wishing to use the pool. Great staff and attentive life guards. We love it!
Fantastic experience: Friendly and lovely staff. Nice place to be especially on Tuesdays
Negative experience: The only reason I go is that it is near me. Usually not many people but on a couple of occasions, I had to wait to find a treadmill free. The gym area is quite small, and in the dumbells' area, there is ONE bench and not much space to exercise. It would benefit from some restructuring works. I haven't tried the pool, but reading the reviews of cold water put me off. The staff is not friendly and at times borderline rude. They don't reply when I say hello or goodbye either because they are busy on their phones, headphones on, being completely oblivious to themselves, or because they are talking between them and simply ignore you.
Positive experience: The leisure centre as a whole is quite decent , considering it isn't that big, they've managed to pack everything in there. The pool is alright to, a bit chilly sometimes, but that's to be expected. The changing rooms can be a bit grim, but that depends on what day you go there, I've noticed anyway. The sauna is nice, but a bit small. The same goes for the gym upstairs, though it does have a fair bit of equipment in there, so I guess that kind of makes up for it. They do host different exercise classes every week day, which look exciting, and they have an outdoor exercise area for those that want a bit more peace, the place could do with a lick of paint, and maybe some modernising but overall it's good.
Negative experience: The learner pool itself is a decent size. We have experienced similar problems to others on these reviews where the pool has been cold, but the staff have usually at least warned us of this before getting in. The biggest disappointment for me/my children is the slide. It seems to very rarely be open. My wife and children attended today for a homeschooling slot and the slide was advertised as being open for this. On arrival the slide was closed. When my wife asked the staff behind the desk for a reason she was told "there aren't enough people to make it worthwhile opening". Worthwhile for whom? If one family turn up and pay to use the advertised facilities then they should be opened. The member of staff said "about 15 people" need to be using the pool for it to be opened. As far as I'm aware there was no mention of this on the website. Overall I would describe this place as very average.
Positive experience: This is a really nice pool for young children learning to swim. Unfortunately on our visit the floors of the changing rooms were dirty with huge clumps of hair and there was no toilet paper to be found anywhere. It would be have been a great visit if it was clean and well serviced
Fantastic experience: In Cambridge is few of this kind places. It is gym with swimming pool. Good for exercise, for keeping your body healthy. Big parking spaces.
Fantastic experience: Splash area +playground for kids
Positive experience: Boring Astro pitches a rubbish
Positive experience: We only use the pool, on an ad hoc basis and for kids swim lessons, so no idea what the gym etc is like. The little pool is good for kids (ours are 4&2), and usually warm enough - we go pretty much weekly.. There's a little waterfall, and usually a lot of floats, noodles and toys to play with. Big steps to get in and out, not ladders. There's also a separate water slide, though we've never used it. Lockers in the changing room take a £1 coin, returnable. There are loads of standard changing rooms, plus a handful of family changing rooms with fold down chair (presumably for overactive little toddlers while parents are dressing), and a fold down table bit for changing babies/little ones. There are hair dryers and mirrors etc. Ladies showers are cubicles, but according to my husband, the men's is a big open space! Toilets are near the showers, and there's a larger, accessible toilet near the lifeguard station, adjacent to the pool. The swim teachers are excellent - just the right balance of friendly and encouraging, with enough of a teacher vibe to get the kids to do what they're told! Some minor downsides: There's often a bit of a sewage smell near the toilets, which is a bit yuck, but otherwise everything is fine. Trying to make adjustments to swim lesson details is infuriating, everytime I've needed help the front desk staff have spent ages tapping away on the computer, only to tell me that they can't help and I have to do it online. I try online and there's no option for it, it tells you to contact the help desk. I ended up emailing the central team, who, in fairness, sorted it very quickly and efficiently. Just wish we were told the right pathway in the first place each time!
Positive experience: Didn't go in. Went to park
Positive experience: Attended my son's friends birthday party. Great fun. Very helpful and friendly team there.
Fantastic experience: Clean changing rooms although quite chilly, lovely pool.
Negative experience: Horrible service said I was gonna watch and kicked me out
Positive experience: Pool could be warmer for baby and toddler. Changing rooms are good. We had a nice time.
Fantastic experience: Lovely leisure centre, great pool and gym
Positive experience: Good swimming here
Fantastic experience: Good football Astro facilities
Fantastic experience: Was so calm and I didn't feel uncomfortable and it was really good positive experience I'm going again next week
Negative experience: Took my two grandchildren there to the small pool, when we arrived they said the water is cooler than normal. We got into the water and it was cold . We stayed for less than our allotted time, my grandson was shivering in the water. We left at 1pm on a Saturday lunchtime , there was no one else in either pool . If they don’t sort the water temperature out people will stop using it.
Fantastic experience: Nice pool, just water a bit too cold
Fantastic experience: Brilliant easy access to parking ,inside very lovely staff smiling and helping with were to go .It was our first time there. Kids loved the water slide and the pool. For us was perfect.Happy weekend.
Fantastic experience: Good gym facilities, the person who works in the gym is more than helpful, will give advice and tips for free- has been amazing for making sure I don’t hurt myself doing something wrong. Only downsize is the air con isn’t great in the summer, but facilities are clean and staff are lovely.
Fantastic experience: Great classes, good gym, clean, pool isn't too busy for lane swimming.
Negative experience: Expected to use a tiny portion of the pool before midday for £3.50 per child! For 50 mins, water very cold, unhelpful staff, with no idea
Negative experience: Swimming pool nearly always closed. Disappointing considering member prices
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Cambridge
Fantastic experience: Good place for small kids to learn swimming. They have setup lanes so that there is no problem for swimmers. This place is well laid out for use. Ample parking space, many cubicles to change, lot of showers and clean restrooms. Trainer and Staff in abbey are very helpful and accomidating as well.
Positive experience: They have a very nice pool for kids. Its a shame the water slides arent open more often though.
Fantastic experience: Great service, I enjoyed swimming after a long time.
Negative experience: After pre paying for swimming I arrived scanned by code to get in while 3 members of staff watched while they where chatting on the desk to then get changed to walk into the swimming pool to then be told as I'm getting in the pool that the swimming pool is closed because not enough staff and I would of had a email to which I replied I hadn't and no refund till I went and requested.
Fantastic experience: Pool is clean, staff is great.
Fantastic experience: Was good not busy on a Sunday over lunchtime.
Positive experience: Good selection of equipment, plenty of parking but the air conditioning never seems to be on before 10am which can be off putting as it makes the workout so much harder
Negative experience: Dire. Call centre staff unhelpful. Unable to open the toddlers pool because of a shortage of staff... during half term, so it must have been a shock to have some customers. Their refund policy requires 4 hours notice to cancel or else you dont recieve a refund. This apparently is to stop being booked up and stopping other customers from being able to come in, but it rings a little hollow when theres still over 30 spaces left to book. They also fail to mention this policy at the point of booking (admittedly it says in the email they send you confirming your account sign up, but this goes to junk mail so easily missed). Luckily they believe in prividing for better mental health so stealing £26 off you definately makes you feel much better about half term.
Positive experience: Nice pool good for all ages plus new slide is cool. Haven't used other facilities apart form AstroTurf but people tend to sneak in the gates and use without payment which was annoying
Positive experience: Staff nice and friendly Communal areas and changing rooms look tired. However, the pool was clean and warm.
Positive experience: Small pool is quite cold for our 1 year old, we spent there only 10min, she was shivering, we needed to leave.
Negative experience: My first time using pool water with my twin boys (5). What an awful experience. It didn't start well, first we all had to remove our shoes and socks and place them in grotty little shelving units prior to entering the changing room. This was only made worse by the fact the flooring on both outside and inside of the changing room was visibly dirty. Next we tried to find a family changing room that was clean, this wasn't possible, so we used the least filthy cubicle. Entering the pool area I was optimistic, the kids pool was a good size and there were a lot of animal shaped floats. I was soon shocked back into reality as I entered the water, it was uncomfortably cold. Both my boys didn't want to go in. I asked the lifeguard if the kids pool was always this cold and he said 'yes'. We managed to last 15 minutes before my boys had blue lips and were shivering. What a disappointment this place is, definitely not worth £13.
Negative experience: It’s now winter and absolutely freezing outside we didn’t expect the pool to be just as cold. I took my daughter today and this is the first time she has not wanted to stay in the pool. Her lips were blue aswell as a lot of other children who left after 20 or so minutes due to the pool temperature. It got to the point my child and others were getting in and out of the pool to use the shower just to warm up. Absolutely awful to have a pool so cold especially this time of year. I couldn’t believe how many children were shivering and blue lipped. This needs sorting asap!
Fantastic experience: Recently noticed the walls of the big pool inside it near the steps is very much in need of a good clean above the water level, as it has grey smears along it and is off-putting. Been like this for a long time now. Nice place apart from this.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly
Fantastic experience: Nice place for the pool and gym. But for the ultimate fitness goals and skills the bike skate park is amazing for all keen riders not for the faint hearted the lads that maintain it are always ready to help gide you they also maintain it and many have been for 20 years which is great the experience they offer is always welcomed. My son and his friends have been spending more time here which has helped them build a great relationship with the local community and these old school legends hats off to the people. There is parking for the park and field at the pool and the staff in the Abbey are very accommodating about this aswell get on down meet some new people and have some fun.
Fantastic experience: The new slide is really fun
Fantastic experience: Nice facility with nice staff
Negative experience: Incredibly confusing system for the kids swimming pool. You're always being told to leave one pool and go to another.
Fantastic experience: Swimming for children is cheap at only £3. Clean changing rooms and toilets. Pool could be a little warmer
Positive experience: Got 2 pools, the one for children is in the right size, no ball is allowed. Lots of free parking space available on site.
Negative experience: Bitterly disappointed from start to finish…. The changing rooms were very wet, dirty and smelt of stale urine. The childrens pool was unpleasantly cold, dirty and falling apart. There was brick and grout on the pool floor. The showers didn’t have any power and it was virtually impossible to rinse shampoo and conditioner out of an adults hair and I gave up with trying to wash my child’s hair. While exiting the child’s pool my child stood on something in the pool which caused her toe to go red and swell as it looked like something had stuck in it. On reports if it to reception, the young girl was helpful, unfortunately it took several calls for management and first aides to arrive. After 10/15 three people arrived. All three looked at my child’s toe, stated it was more likely to be the chlorine or a spider bite as there are a lot of spiders around. Really!!! That’s the worse and most unbelievable excuse I have guard. They cleaned the area and applied a plaster. Told me to seek medical advice if it got worse. The receptionist got out an incident form which they did not complete. Over all extremely disappointed and the two staff had a full on discussion about me and my daughter in another language, very disrespectful and unprofessional.
Positive experience: Nice pool including a small warmer pool which is great for babies and toddlers. Good facilities for baby changing in the changing rooms. Had an issue booking online as sessions on the timetable were not appearing to book and there was no way to call anyone at the actual pool to find out if the session was running. The central company number was unable to offer any advice on individual centres or sessions.
Positive experience: Staff very helpful and informative talking me through the booking service. Centre clean and well laid out for use. Only problem was male ands female poolside toilets have switched around for some reason and the exterior door signage was not obvious because the doors were held open. Glad one woman customer explained they had been swapped as felt uncomfortable about using the wrong one.
Positive experience: I just go swimming there but have found the place clean and tidy. It doesn't appear too crowded due to the booking system in place
Negative experience: Awful rude manager. Having been told they only take cards - no problem - I was told I needed £1 for the locker, I only had a £10 note. The manager said I couldn't have a refund.
Positive experience: The pool is fine but sometimes dirty. Not pleasant to step on grime. The sauna is good as well but very small. I like that the temperature is really high compared to other saunas. When you enter the gym feels like you've been transported back in time. This place is stuck in the '80. People have to improvise a bench press because there isn't one. Cable machines don't have enough attachments. From an optimistic point of view, this puts off a lot of people I guess and sometimes if you're lucky you'll have the whole gym on your own. Usually the gym is not very crowded, would be surprised if it was in that condition. The only positive feedback I could give is the parking. Is huge and there's always space, and it's free.
Fantastic experience: Very nice
Fantastic experience: It's easy to book a session in the swimming pool, and the price is reasonable. The whole place seems clean and there are plenty of lockers.
Positive experience: We only use the learner's pool, but it's really good for kids.
Fantastic experience: The Abbey complex is very well run and the staff exceptionally friendly and personable. It is my home from home!
Fantastic experience: Quality gym with pool sauna
Positive experience: It was a really nice gym with a lot of different activities to do there. The pool is also good to exercise at but I wish the facility was a little bit bigger. Can feel a bit congested at times but the staff are helpful and friendly. The parking isn't that busy as well and it is not as busy inside too so it's an underrated gym to go to. Also a great place to rehab as well because of the wide range of activities here!
Fantastic experience: Swimming pool isn't too crowd to swim. Good place to work out.
Positive experience: Only went for a PCR test so didn't actually go into complex but teme.ber from. A few years ago the come was good.
Fantastic experience: Went there for a Covid test. Very efficient, well organised. Easy parking and helpful staff
Positive experience: The Abbey pool is clean and spacious. Lots of cubicles for changing, lots of showers and clean toilets. The staff are very polite and helpful. The price for admission is cheap. Only downside is that it is a boring pool for littlens at the moment as all the pool toys have been taken away thanks again to covid.
Positive experience: Actually wanted to see their overflow parking to see about the walk in PCR facilities..RIGHT...well the security guard at the gate was very helpful, offered a mask and the Team inside we really helpful...quick and easy and got my results in less than 24hrs
Fantastic experience: Good gym, nice pool. Refreshing change of environment from the university gyms
Negative experience: Booked swimming and needed to change my session. Now been charged for 2 sessions I could not use. Cancellation policy is very confusing.
Positive experience: got my 6packs here
Fantastic experience: Great prices and offers
Fantastic experience: Really helpful and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Family friendly, well organised, nice and tidy leisure complex with gym & swimming pools both for kids and adults. It's located on a quiet road & area. Plenty of parking available just outside the building. Staff is friendly and prices affordable. I can recommend it.
Fantastic experience: Good swimming ♀️ pools and qualified staff
Positive experience: Great pool, friendly staff, decent changing rooms... ... but a terrible app and difficult booking process. Having designed and created numerous apps myself, I would dearly love to help them fix it.
Positive experience: Went here for a Covid test. Easy process, safe and quick
Positive experience: Used for swimming. Ample parking, closer to city and 2 pools for different heights. However, the bigger pool water is not warm enough. Membership is totally worth it as it includes everything.
Positive experience: A really great gym, swimming pool, and splash pad. It has great facilities, but they aren't always that hygienic.
Fantastic experience: Really good place. Do have to book in advance though on the Better UK app.
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym and pool
Positive experience: A good learner pool for the little ones. Was good to book during covid restrictions and enjoy some splashing when the weather outside was not good. Whilst generally clean and convenient, the changing rooms and poolside could use a little refreshing.
Fantastic experience: Visited the swimming pool with my daughter. Everything is clean and on order. Staff is very friendly. Pool was a bit crowded with babies, but still had enough space for us to enjoyg
Positive experience: Really enjoyable place. First time going and with my family of 4, (fiancee and two children.) We all had a great time. The one way system was interesting and looked like would work well for those that leave at the same times as others. Seemed to be very well.managed and maintained. I would definitely be coming back again for more awimming
Fantastic experience: Excellent! Great staff!
Positive experience: It is a ok swimming pool, it has two pools a children's pool which is all one depth and a bigger pool which is divided into with half being lanes and the other half open for you to swim at your own pace. The changing rooms aren't always the best, they can be quite dirty and grubby at times. And the showers really need family cubicles! Its really difficult to shower with children.
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Fantastic experience: Love it in here very cold pool but it makes you move which is the whole point of having a swim
Fantastic experience: Great learners pool, good safety measures in place. Easy to book.
Fantastic experience: Great place for swimming it has 2 pool lane swimming pool and kids pool . My little girl loves it you have to book a time and you get an hour because of covid but that's plenty of time it has a gym aswell you can get membership for the gym and pools it's all on line .
Positive experience: I have been here before, it is good. The staff is nice and helpful, the pool it self is quite good. Not perfect because they need family friendly showers! It is not easy coming with a small child to the pool just by itself, but if the showers are not good( more space, shelves.. etc), it makes everything even harder. I hope they get to have some improvements soon!!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic place. Book the pool. Gym. Staff very pleasant.
Positive experience: It has a nice swimming pool and very reasonable charges
Fantastic experience: Great staff good for swimming but The complex could do with a face lift changing rooms are a bit shabby but ok
Fantastic experience: Looks like back to normal and there's some construction work going on that has blocked a major pathway. The cleaning regime is now relaxed and unfortunately it shows. Still it's much better than pre-covid The restrictions in place has left it very clean and my hope is that this will remain into the future. There's still plenty of parking about even when it's busy. Face masks are still a most which I can't get used to.
Negative experience: My kids' (twins) swimming lesson starts at 17:30 every week. I was late by exact 2 mins and I was turned down at the door saying that I was late. It was extremely harassing with two 4 year olds. I tried speaking to the teacher but he was not ready to listen. There were time where the lesson started 5 mins late due to various reasons and we waited patiently, however on this occasion they didn't allow my kids in. This is extremely unfriendly and rude behaviour, completely unacceptable!!
Positive experience: Great to be able to swim after lockdown nonsense
Fantastic experience: Really nice place for the whole family. 2 swimming pools. Nice friendly very responsible staff. Family changing rooms available. You don't have to be a member to book appointments. Behind the center there are few things to explore. Football field, kids playground, nice tiny roads to walk. There are to big advantages- the complex is away from the main road and the parking is free. Strongly recommend this place to everyone.
Positive experience: Not a fan of the pitch, but really enjoyed our last game before the lockdown
Positive experience: Played 7 a side, pitch OK, but not very which one is witch.
Fantastic experience: Because I like great northern to cambridge
Fantastic experience: Lots of hard work has gone in to making the pool covid secure. Feels very safe and it's lovely to be able to swim again.
