YMCA Thames Gateway Group: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Good place for activities
Negative experience: Worse place to live in they don’t help you move out they don’t care where you go or anything I wouldn’t recommend it for people that work as they take so much money of you but now I am out there I am a lot happier and enjoying my life
Thank you for your feedback, Mary. We are pleased that you are doing well but sorry to hear that we didn’t meet your expectations in terms of our accommodation offer. As you are aware, our housing offer is a temporary solution - a short-term offer that exists to support young people whilst they get back on their feet. This offer includes low needs support and our housing team work really hard to ensure that all residents are supported, but ultimately, it’s down to the individual to accept and act on any advice given. We acknowledge that changes are needed in terms of housing benefits, however, it’s the government (DWP) that sets these rules, not us. YMCA England & Wales, our national council, continue to lobby government for change but until then, and like all other supported housing providers, we are bound by the rules that are in place. Best wishes YMCA TGG Admins
Fantastic experience: Had some lunch at this place. Was served with a smile and the food was great
Thank you for leaving us a review, Aadam. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your experience and lunch at our Tommy's Place restaurant recently, and will pass this onto the team.
Positive experience: I spent 2 years as a resident at the YMCA in Romford. There were highs and lows across those whole two years. There are some things I want to praise. The housing team are basically always there- for ANYTHING you need. My support worker was there for me when I was really struggling with my mental health and that was exactly what I needed. The Cafe staff are absolutely wonderful and they really made my day a few times. A smile goes a long way in a place like the YM and having a laugh with the ladies there definitely picked up my spirits. My only "downside" per se is that maybe 98% of the residents in the building don't know what to do to move out. There needs to be a more substantial effort to create something to educate residents about council housing, direct debits, money management, housing associations ect. Some people have been in the building for years upon years and they have no idea how to start the move on process. I had about 6 people ask me for advice when I found out that I was leaving. Maybe see if you can arrange for a CAB worker to come into the building for a while so that people can find out what to do- buy lunch or something to get people to want to go, its important. Or even 1-1 meetings where residents are given the resources that they need to apply to the council for housing. I won't fault the ymca because without it I wouldn't be here, but it is so easy to stagnate and fall into depression when you first move in and you know nobody. Giving residents a clear way out (even if it is just a load of forms and short seminars, or meetings with council reps) would be a light at the end of the tunnel for some people. You start to lose hope when you've been there for two years with no progress. But all I'm all I think the YMCA Is a great resource for young people that are experiencing troubles. I think there could be improvement, but I have nothing to be negative about. Thank you guys for getting me back on my feet Miss you all!
Fantastic experience: Have been going to this gym for many years. Have made many friends here. Good gym and classes reasonably priced.

Hi Stephen. Thanks for taking the time to leave this review, we always appreciate and take on board customer feedback and it's great to hear that you are enjoying our facilities!
Negative experience: This is an urgent situation that needs to be addressed immediately. The teachers at the Romford YMCA pre-school were unbelievably rude when I brought my child in just one day late on the tuition payment. They flat out refused to let my child attend, despite my explaining the extenuating circumstances. This is completely unacceptable behavior from the staff, and I demand they rectify this issue right away. My child deserves better than this kind of treatment, and I expect the school to be more understanding and accommodating going forward. This is an urgent matter that requires your prompt attention.
Thank you for your feedback, Theepa. This has been passed on to our Romford Pre-school Manager, who is unfortunately unable to confirm who you are, as your Google profile name does not match any of our parent records. If you could please contact us by phone on 01708 766211, or email us at [email protected] with your child’s name and your contact details, we will be able to assist you further. It is also worth noting that as per YMCA TGG policy, children will, by default, be refused entry if payment isn’t received by the contractually agreed date. This is standard practice and in place to protect parents from accruing late fees or debt.
Fantastic experience: A lovely busy community.
Thank you for the lovely feedback, Nick. We are pleased to hear that you are enjoying our facilities!
Fantastic experience: Very nice.
Thank you for the feedback and star rating, Vela. We are pleased to hear that you like our facilities!
Negative experience: I have been a member at Rush Green for a few years and lately it has got really bad. I don't go that often but when I go it seems there is always a problem with the machinery or WiFi. The leg press hasn't been working properly since Christmas 2023 and it gets fixed and then breaks again. Sort this matter out before you lose more members!!! Thank you!
Hi Kiran. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are aware of these issues and completely appreciate your frustration – we feel the frustration too as getting people in for the repairs isn’t always the easiest thing to do. We will, of course, keep you updated on equipment repairs and will pass your feedback on to our customer services team. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you would prefer to speak with a member of the team about this directly, please contact our customer service team on 01708 766211, or email us at [email protected].
Fantastic experience: Great place. Great gym and great support
Thank you so much for taking the time to provide a rating, Tyrone!
Positive experience: A nice place where there are a lot of different activities that suits everyone with different age groups. I had a subscription with the Hussle app, which gives a discount through my bank. But according to one of the receptionists that still I could have paid less if I directly subscribed with them. There is a minimum 3 months subscription with Hussle, so after it expires, I'm going to check their prices. The gym is nice, with 5 different areas for treadmills and aerobics activities, weightlifting, core exercises and another area with various weightlifting machines. It's not big, but okay if 10 persons or less are there. I usually go early morning around 6am, so it's almost always not busy. The area for core exercises is very small, even for classes. I have not attended any. Maybe it's being done in different area. There are other activities other than the gym, which I have not tried. But I pass by a basketball court which looks very nice. There is a cafe as well.
We are happy to hear that you are enjoying our facilities, Ehab! Thank you for taking the time to provide such an in-depth review.
Positive experience: Went for a concert did not really have anything to do with the YMCA

Fantastic experience: Lots of activities for fitness
Thank you for sharing your rating with us, Titilayo. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying our facilities!
Fantastic experience: Great non-profit organisation where everyone can find something that suits their needs. Lots of activities, with some accessible to people with disabilities. I have been attending Kim's Health Rehab and Stroke Rehab classes with my mother in law who had a stroke 4 years ago, and we are very grateful. Kim is very careful with the needs of everyone in her classes. The exercises are seated and very helpful for keeping joints and muscles in good condition. No one is required to do the exercises right, just as much as they can. Everyone is having fun
Thank you for taking the time to leave us such lovely feedback, Aleksandrina. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying our facilities & programmes and will pass this on to Kim!
Negative experience: It very dirty not clean at all I have family member in there and she works they taken so much of her it unreal. And she get treat like everyone eles does. It so worry how housing benefits have different rules for people are working nd people on benefits the food looks nasty oily and I am thinking about getting the food hygiene out there is no way people should eat in there

Fantastic experience: Friendly staff great atmosphere
Thank you for sharing your rating with us, Nigel. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying our facilities!
Fantastic experience: I had my daughters 8th birthday party here. She had a bouncy castle party with face painting. It’s really good value for money as you can have up to 35 kids and if you want more children you pay an additional fee. It’s quite hard to find a venue that will take so many children. The children went absolutely mental running around they loved it. It’s three bouncy castles in a huge sports hall. I made my own food and hired out the food room. But there’s an option for the ymca to do the food if you wish. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend the YMCA and would defo come back.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us such lovely feedback, Lady T. We are happy to hear that the party went well, and will pass your comments on to the team. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Great community centre.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and rating with us, Ravi. We are pleased to hear that you are enjoying our facilities & activities and look forward to welcoming you back again soon!
Negative experience: I went to the reception at 7:30 this morning to pay the monthly fee for my room. JAMES, who was talking to me, tried to check the phone. He didn't care what I was there for! And in the end he said you have to wait for five minutes while he didn't say this at first. Please hire someone with experience in reception.
Hi Chia. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback. We are very sorry to hear of your experience and will feed this back to the customer services team. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please feel free to email us at [email protected].

Fantastic experience: The staff here are so lovely, encouraging, helpful, cannot praise them enough. Not a gym for posers, but one for genuine people wanting to improve their health. Love it there
Thank you for sharing your feedback and rating with us, Elaine. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying our facilities and will pass your comments on to the fitness team.
Fantastic experience: They hosted my father's 70th birthday, and I have to say the whole experience was seamless from booking to the event day. Communication was pretty good before the day, and they were very helpful. On the event day, Molly's customer or client service was second to none. She was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. She answered every query we had and catered to all our requests. Her service was 5 stars, and we will definitely be using your company again for our next occasion. Much appreciated. Tayo
Thank you for sharing your feedback and rating with us, Tayo. We are happy to hear that your event went well and will pass your compliments on to Molly & the team. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future.
Fantastic experience: Great gym
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a 5 star rating! Your feedback is important as it helps us to improve our facilities for our valued customers.
Negative experience: Trying to get through to someone in order to get an application form when being evicted is like talking to a dolphin although I'm sure with a dolphin you'll get a response yet these don't seem to respond. Bad. Just so bad.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Romeo. We’re sorry to hear that you have had difficulties reaching us and will strive to do better in future. For future reference, housing application forms can be downloaded from our website and returned to us at [email protected]. The link is https://ymcatg.org/romford-housing/
Fantastic experience: I've had two birthday parties here now and it's great value for money. The kids run around like lunatics, on bouncy castles and any extras you want to add. The staff are really friendly and great with the kids. I honestly can't fault it. I do my own food, so it helps keep the costs down and they're always on hand to provide anything I might have forgotten.
Thank you so much for your 5 star review, Tijani! We take pride in our birthday party packages, and are happy to hear that much fun was had by all. We hope to see you again soon!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic staff, I used venue for frec3 training with BKS, GYM, CANTEEN, ROOMS, SUPPORT so much to do for all.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Jaffary. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying our facilities and look forward to seeing you again soon!
Negative experience: Absolutely awful place. My daughter had an accident, resulting in a head injury and broken nose. Staff didn't seem to care. Had to ask for a cold compress, then about 10 minutes later my daughter was feeling nauseous so we asked for sick bowl/bag, to be given a waste paper bin, that had paper in it, then was left again, to then be advised to take her to A&E as we were leaving. No one actually assessed her, so assuming there is not many first aid trained staff on site. All they did was ask her name, and what happened. No DOB, No address, No contact number, so clearly wasn't recorded in accident book correctly. Needles to say, this will be taken further.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Natasha. We’re sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with us. We take customer feedback very seriously and invite you to get in touch with us via email at [email protected] so that we can investigate this matter fully. We look forward to hearing from you. YMCA Thames Gateway Group
Fantastic experience: A comunity house. That is all I can say. With a good ideas to gather comuntiy together,to provide support. But the premises are very outdated. Need massive investments...
Negative experience: I werent there to find out how to apply for the YMCA The staff didnt know what they were doing They gave me the wrong date to go in for an assessment. Had me going back and forth to eventually end up terminating their involvement with me because I missed a call from them, back when I was homeless.
Positive experience: Go to the YMCA for the gym, couple of bits of apparatus getting a bit tired but pretty good overall
Negative experience: Would absolutely not recommend. Only public visitors are catered for well. Residents are treated horrifically, for a place that is supposed to help and support vulnerable people. It is unfortunate to say they do the opposite. Many staff are rude and patronising and don’t take into account the struggles residents find in that building. It is so old that most things are falling apart. There’s cracks throughout every floor, the lifts hardly work and you’ll have to walk up and down 10 flights depending where ur floor is. The ‘ meals ‘ provided are atrocious, and in no way do they fulfil a healthy balanced diet. If you work you’ll have to pay a crazy 60% of your wages to live in a place I’d compare or if not say is worse to prison. Support workers will tell you ‘ beggars can’t be choosers” when you address problems in the block. The head of support workers is on a suspended license, it is quite alarming they do not dbs check staff to work with such vulnerable people. Overall I would completely avoid for the sake of your mental and physical well-being. Only less than a handful of staff there are kind and help you.
Fantastic experience: Great place to visit. Good range of fitness equipment to keep you in shape
Fantastic experience: Great classes, such friendly staff and members.
Positive experience: It's OK for what u pay, don't expect frills and fancies! There is none but the staff are friendly and welcoming, the trainers are great too. They can't seem to regulate the temperature in the dance studio; mostly too cold in the winters and not working the summers; perhaps they can't afford new equipment.
Fantastic experience: I use the after-school/holiday club. The staff are always bubbly and smiles. My child always looks forward to going. The holiday club offers so many activities to do, for example, go swimming, have day trips out to the park, go to a museum. Would recommend
Fantastic experience: Fantastic good food
Positive experience: Ok
Negative experience: Terrible Experience, friend held a birthday party here, they gave her no time to prepare the room and no help whatsoever, staff was non existent, customer service was below zero, Party was rushed and food was cold and tasteless. For the money she spent this services was appalling!
Fantastic experience: Went to a play on the Windrush experience Very good
Fantastic experience: Various activities going on in this this place gym, etc, nice staff
Fantastic experience: Had my sons 6th birthday party here. Was amazing, the kids had loads of fun, the staff were amazing. Would definitely recommend
Fantastic experience: A good place to go especially on weekdays
Fantastic experience: Visited an event about disabled travelling
Fantastic experience: Nice
Fantastic experience: decent
Fantastic experience: Having held my sons 8th football party and my daughters 5th deluxe party here I can highly recommend! The party leaders are fab and as parents it's great to know that you can leave it all to them! Both parties were enjoyed by all. All facilities are very clean and the food party room is always clean and tidy upon arrival. I would highly recommend for anyone wanting a special fun packed party for their little or big ones!
Fantastic experience: Good gym value for money not ponsy.
Fantastic experience: Staff are always so friendly and helpful, great gym too, doesn't feel like you're being judged while exercising.
Thank you Nathan, we’re so glad you feel welcome and are enjoying our facilities
Fantastic experience: Recently returned to using the gym at weekends and am happy to say the hygiene and cleanliness has improved a great deal, it was one of the factors which almost prevented me from returning but am really impressed. Keep up the good work YMCA
Fantastic experience: A very nice and comfortable place with polite staff and a peaceful environment I was happy to visit.
Positive experience: Not bad here. My view. It's a huge skyscraper in Romford Town terms and combined hotel on the outskirts of Romford Town. Built maybe in the 70's or even earlier everything is inclusive once you move in here, at a price, of course. Many Havering Tech and Barking Tech students and so forth. Restuarants. Bed, breakfast and evening meals. Gyms, conference rooms, athletics sections, car parking, trainers and all sorts. Give them a call. Tell them what you need....
Negative experience: Poor, what can you say ymca says it all
Positive experience: Good local gym, friendly and enthusiastic staff. I go off peak generally and it is not busy. A comfortable place to work out at a decent price.
Fantastic experience: It's a good leisure centre it has a diner and many more activities to do.
Fantastic experience: People friendly so this makes it the best choice.
Fantastic experience: Amazing
Positive experience: Gym good. Staff friendly. But bad for residents. Ripped curtains. Sometimes no hot water. Sometimes lift faulty. Sometime washing machines not working. Sometimes dryers out of order. Very hard for residents and very good for out door people
Fantastic experience: Excellent, faultless - under the circumstances. Comprehensive facilities.
Fantastic experience: Great kickboxing class from falcon
Positive experience: Nice place. But gym is a bit too much especially for kids . No wonder why some children's health are poor.
Positive experience:
Fantastic experience: Staff friendly. Cafe nice and clean. Amenities good
Fantastic experience: So 2 years ago, a motorbike accident nearly killed me. Lucky I survived! My right arm and hand are paralysed and I was given brain-damage.......I was told I'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life! Now thanks to YMCA, I am now running at 9.5kmph and lifting 20kg weight with my good arm! Special thanks to Alex, Noel and Debbie for helping me push through so much and be the miracle people call me!! Love Shane! ❤
Fantastic experience: Very welcoming gym, with a good variety of cardio and weight machines as well as free weights and classes. Best of all there is no gym snobbery and feels inclusive to all ages and abilities.
Fantastic experience: Great car park
Fantastic experience: Decent sized rooms and comfortable beds. Joking. It's pretty bad but it's better than nothing.
Fantastic experience: New in town, of course not. Just that people not sure what it's like. The chef is amazing. Scones to die for
Fantastic experience: Amazing choice of facilities for the community, all run by excellent friendly and helpful Staff
Fantastic experience: I found this place quite welcoming good classes this morning I done TRX and circuit both classes were full with a good atmosphere
Fantastic experience: Good gym and cafe freindly staff
Positive experience: Yeah it's ok. Plenty to do, gym is good. Cafe is ok. As you'd expect I guess?
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Friendly staff
Positive experience: Went here for a meeting small rooms
Fantastic experience: Went to do a chair in CA. Service.
Positive experience: Good parking, pleasant staff, spacious venue.
Fantastic experience: Good place for all sports activities.
Negative experience: They verbally abuse you.
Negative experience: This ️ Trash!!!
Fantastic experience: Great facilities very friendly.
Positive experience: We had a beathiful and very good parry all kids parents enjoy ! I give 3 star because the time for the money what they asked I think the minimum 2 hours need they offer not enough time :(
Negative experience: Terrible place. Wanted me to pay nearly £50 for gym membership just to be told I couldn't use the gym today. Disgusting. Staff are unprofessional and patronizing
Positive experience: Good gym facilities and classes
Positive experience: Been using the gym for many years nothing ott but does represent good value for money
Fantastic experience: I visit Falcon kickboxing club here every Monday from 8:30 pm till 9:30 pm. Paul is a great teacher, it's a very friendly club and newcomers are made to feel very welcome. Great exercise and brilliant for self defence, great for men and women. The venue it's self is great and there is ample of parking. I would definitely recommend this club.
Negative experience: Called twice to arrange Sons Birthday party. They never call back. Complete waste of time and let down
Negative experience: Held my daughters birthday party, it ended too abruptly & we paid for food yet it was all taken away before we had a chance to take it with us. Certain it was used for the party right after us.
Positive experience: Having used a number of services over time, I would recommend the childcare provision – the staff seem to genuinely love kids. The restaurant, although having a dated look, does serve good meals (at great prices) and has friendly staff. The gym is equipped well, although it does seem that lately, in 2015, their health/wellbeing service is ailing; ironically, as it seems to have resorted to highly desperate gimmicks in recent months - as reported in the local press, to increase trade. Firstly, there was the spectacle of fitness bosses wheeling out a disabled youngster (a volunteer) for the benefit of the local media. The other embarrassment (in recent weeks) was their persuading a local reporter to go “rock climbing” which eventually turned out to be a wall…. in a room….. and.. of all places'….on the ground floor ! In spite of this there was the promise of gaining “extra adrenaline from an alternative to conventional fitness.” From the photos accompanying the local reporter’s piece, as she boldly “scaled new heights” you could imagine Acrophobia fears coming upon those locals, vertically challenged.
Positive experience: Held my daughter's 5th birthday party here. Really friendly and helpful staff, plenty of space, children loved the bouncy castles and party games. Lots of options for food and parties. Plenty of parking. Overall a very good experience. I highly recommend it. :)
