Pace Health Club

Negative experience: As usual, I swpied by membership card and asked for a towel where the immediate response was that I would have to pay the fee for the bigger towel. I kindly asked for the small towel that is provided free as part of my membership. There was no apology given, only response was that they were out and I would have to pay for the upgrade to get a towel. One of the biggest decisions for selecting this membership was that towels are provided and I do not carry any of my own. I responded that if the gym fails to stock the regular towels, that is the responsibility of the gym and not that of the customer and therefore would have to be made good by the gym. The manager argued that it wasn't his fault as he had ordered them and they didn't arrive. Some real professionalism at play here. Someone in a management position should know the difference between me addressing him as an individual vs the face of your gym. I tried explaining again that the failings are on the part of the gym and not that of the customer and you cannot be expected to pay for the gyms shortcomings. All reasoning fell on deaf ears and I had no choice but to purchase the towel.

Positive experience: Friendly clean,a little busy at times.

Negative experience: It's high time to get the ladies' showers fixed, blocked shower drain since May 2023!! You've put a cute notice out there apologising for the inconvenience but nothing has been done about it by Dec 2023.

Positive experience: A lovely cosy place. Friendly staff. What could be improved? The pool area is very busy and the steam room and sauna are way below the required temperature.

Negative experience: The WORST customer experience I have EVER received in my life time. Avoid at ALL COSTS - signed up to Pace Health club at the start of the year, and proceeded to cancel my membership before returning home for summer. Came back to uni to find out that, randomly, in October they started taking money out of my account. They took 80£ in total, and while trying to call them up, not one of them called me back. I had to call every day, and finally they said they didn’t know what was happening but they would disable anything to do with my account. The VERY NEXT DAY, another 40£ came out. Disgusting. I am now £120 down with this club, and they have been awful in providing any form of refund. I have been dealing with this for 2 months and have had no progress so far. I have been given false promises and I feel as if I’m not being taken seriously as a student. How a chain company can sleep well at night, stealing £120 from a student and longing out the refund process is beyond me. Still patiently waiting for any responses back that are different to “we are working on it.” When are the club going to rectify this? AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Positive experience: Clean and tidy. Simple fitness that does a job.

Fantastic experience: This was my first time visiting Pace, the facilities were great, loved the pool and the staff were really helpful and friendly.

Positive experience: Best Gym in Durham albeit a bit small. Parking included in membership. Changing rooms bit old and tired - could do with renovating.

Positive experience: We only used the pool and sauna area, but they were clean and peaceful.. my only criticism would be the open changing room.. not private ones.

Positive experience: Overall this Pace health club is of a good standard. They have a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, gym and 15m swimming pool. In general the place is clean, although the odd time you go there can be plastic cups everywhere due to people not using the bins. You can have a relaxing time. They often have spa packages available at affordable prices. The staff are always friendly and happy to help. I would say this place is worth a visit.

Positive experience: Visited during restrictions and still too busy. Steam room not steamt at all, robes only provided if you get treatment.

Fantastic experience: Excellent spa day. Enjoyed the pool, steam room, sauna and massage. Treated with respect and kindness. Building is clean, maintained and comfortable. Ideal relaxation place. Definitely going again.

Negative experience: Showers beside the pool are cold. So many people do not shower prior to entering the pool, which is un-hygienic. Showers in changing rooms are cold and are never working properly. The changing room is very small and over crowded. So many lockers are either broken or locked and the key removed.

Positive experience: Old gym equipment and limited weight choice and the jacuzzi was painful to sit in due to chlorine levels. Good for an evening of relaxation nonetheless

One drawback is that the plumbing in the changing rooms always has some kind of problem whether it's a non-flushing toilet or a stuck tap. Totally out of keeping with the rest of the health club and the hotel it's attached to.

Positive experience: Nice clean pool, but changing room (male) should be cleaner and is in need of refurbishment (damaged doors, no shower door that can be locked, no swimwear centrifugal drier...)

Positive experience: Nice sauna basic gym and decent friendily clientel.... however it is always short staffed. You can never find a member of staff if you need to hire a towel or renew your membership etc...your left hunting the building as the owners have staff doing allsorts all to save a few quid. The equipment is very basic there is no real room for progression here, its just a bog standard gym for basic maintenance. With extremely high levels of chlorine in the pool. Always smells really bad....and on a morning its like a kiddies cresh so if you want to relax in sauna or jaccusi... find another gym.
