Negative experience: Probably one of the worst gyms Ive been to!! I couldn’t get onto the limited amount of equipment they had causing my workout to have long breaks and at times just queuing watching all of the Ego warriors lifting far too heavy weights wrongly! Then once I finished my poor inactive workout I went i to the sweat box changing rooms.! Needless to say - I wont be going back!!!

Negative experience: My honest opinion Advantages it’s opened 24 hours Lots of machines that’s about it Now the bad points I have to train else where for legs as no leg press The legs extensions don’t work correctly the weights rub against the machine it’s self as you can see by the marks Hamstring machine seated absolutely terrible Pull down cable feels like it’s also rubbing not nice feeling Not many ropes Clips for the attachments don’t match up and have to improvise all the time You can tell the machines are worn out Dumb bells only go to 38kg not good enough Squat rack unstable for anything other than putting a bar on On a separate note not the gyms fault Bring air freshener

Negative experience: One of the worst gym groups ive ever been to. They were closed for 2 days for a refresh yet came back to the exact same garbage. Lockers are rusty and most dont work equipment is lacking so much and theres barely any free weight machines like the Kings Heath one.

Negative experience: First it’s unacceptable that a gym of that size doesn’t even provide wipers to clean the equipment after workouts it’s really against any minimum hygiene principle , one out of 3 lockers it’s broken, the rest it’s average if it wasn’t because of the 24hrs operations certainly I would not go there

We encourage members to bring in a sweat towel to use after they have used a piece of equipment. Having cleaning stations has resulted in a significant increase in the amount of paper waster and we are focussed on minimising our waste as part of our commitment to Net-Zero. We are proud to be the very first Carbon Neutral Gym Chain in the UK. This is just a part of our efforts, for example we are also taking steps to reduce the amount of single use plastics in our vending machines.

Fantastic experience: Inexpensive Gym .very clean. 3 hours free parking. Open 24 7. Used by both men and women. Lots of equipment means no long waits for anything. Expect to pay £20 a month. Very hard to beat value wise. Personal trainers and various Classes available too. Top value

Negative experience: I want to say lately been going here and and the gym smells really bad like sewerage really off putting. They have theses new fans that blow in but how about extracting the air out. Either way the smell is that bad at times I feel changing gym. If I get a satisfactory response back I'll remove this review.

Negative experience: Not a great first impression. A friend and I both had an induction booked today and on arrival we were asked to wait a few minutes. Twenty minutes into our induction appointment, this PT was still busy on the other side of the gym chatting to someone else. We did our session and left but No apology or return even from staff. We went in on a Saturday midday and it wasn’t as busy as expected, after reading the reviews , and my experience today, I’m not surprised. I will still use the gym, as it’s convenient for me, but new members should be made aware.

Negative experience: **Very Disappointing Experience at The Gym in Shirley** I've been a member of The Gym in Shirley for a while now, but the experience has been far from satisfactory. To begin with, the gym doesn’t have proper air conditioning, even during the summer. The heat makes working out uncomfortable and, at times, unsafe. On top of that, the equipment is frequently out of order. The stair master has been broken for ages, leaving just one available, so you always feel rushed with people waiting to use it. The treadmills are also often out of action, which just adds to the frustration. Despite the gym constantly closing for repairs, the equipment still doesn’t seem to get fixed. It’s as if nothing improves, even after these disruptions, which is incredibly frustrating as a paying member. The female bathroom is also an ongoing issue. The sink tap doesn’t work properly, and you have to press it down continuously just to get a dribble of water, making it nearly impossible to wash your hands. To make things worse, staff seem more interested in eating their hot food in the gym than in addressing these persistent problems. It’s unprofessional and doesn’t contribute to a positive gym environment. Furthermore, there’s no designated area for classes, which means personal trainers are shouting over everyone, making it hard to focus or have a relaxing workout. Overall, The Gym in Shirley is in serious need of improvement, from equipment maintenance to general management. It’s disappointing to pay for a service that doesn’t deliver a decent workout experience.

Negative experience: Cold showers for nearly 2 weeks. Really disappointing this hasn’t been fixed yet. Would be nice to have anti bacterial wipes or cleaning towels to wipe machines down & hanging hooks in the showers for towels and toiletries. Not a practical gym! Been to much better gyms in the past. Don’t plan to be a member for long if things don’t change!

Negative experience: This is just an update. They didn't acknowledge the showers being cold for 8 days in their reply to me. And it's great that the gym is prioritizing carbon zero / and saving paper. Shame it's at the cost of members. I have now left this gym for the reasons in the review. They had to close again not long ago so it finally made me quit. It's been over a week now and cold showers. Originally saying 3-4 days it's now been 8. Considering it's a nationwide chain and it takes this long to fix showers is a little bit embarrassing. Hopefully members will be compensated for this. Also no paper towels and cleaning stations to keep the equipment clean and sanitary for users.

Negative experience: I bought a daypass (which was £7.99) today to come train with my 2 friends (one who goes to this gym and another friend who also bought a daypass). I got a pin and despite entering it correctly multiple times, it didn't work and I got stuck outside. I told my mate to find someone who works there and there was no one. I even called and no one picked up. I couldn't train and do a workout I was very excited for. Cmon Gym Group money doesn't grow on trees.

Negative experience: As soon as you walk in, you're slapped in the face with heat and BO. It's way too hot in there and the aircon doesn't even seem to be switched on. Given how busy it is, like it's new years day everyday, they only have 1 power/full squat rack and barely anyone even uses it for its intended purpose. You'll get the typical commercial gym prat doing their 7ft barbell cheat curls, rows and RDLs in there because they're too lazy to pull it off the ground to initiate the first rep. Just because you're in the squat rack, doesn't mean you're using the squat rack.

Negative experience: My partner and I have been members since the day The Shirley Gym group opened and take our training very seriously. Over the years like any business it was trying to shine and smile and get the customers in. It’s had several different managers constantly trying to improve it. We have constantly sent pictures of the filthy state of the changing rooms & state of gym floor, and it seems fall on deaf ears. The gym users lately do not seem to abide by any rules. We have witnessed PT’s standing there and people putting their mouth to the water machines spreading their gyms which is disgusting. We even increased our membership to live it so that we can access other gym groups, as the standards at Shirley have dropped drastically. Membership keeps increasing, heating has been removed from the changing rooms so it’s freezing in the winter & most importantly all cleaning and sanitising stations have been removed, asking you to buy your own towels wiping sweat on sweat, which makes no sense at all. After speaking to other members no one can believe that the gym group does not have standard basic cleaning essentials for users to use anymore. It makes you wander where the increased membership money is spent on, advertisement and uniforms. I’m sure the response to this review will waffle on about being eco friendly. Only reason we come here is for convenience and location. If another 24hr gym opened up near by would not hesitate to move and I’m sure it will loose its loyal customers who also feel this way. It’s a shame as once it used to be a thriving gym.

Negative experience: Massively overcrowded, you won’t get a bench free. Leg press machine for example you have people sit there and zone out. More time is wasted trying to complete a workout due to this. Small and cramped fine if you just want to use the gym for treadmill though. Although some have seen better days with belts uneven and screens blurred possibly with water damage.

Negative experience: Joined last month, tried to enter today to find out my membership has been cancelled, I haven’t cancelled it, I haven’t cancelled the DD, app asking me to rejoin and charging the £10 joining fee, after I already joined last month The buzzer to call for help by the pod doors, not answered after 6 times! PTs inside the gym must have heard the buzzer calling multiple times as it’s as loud as a fog horn and sounds like a dial up modem! The outside main door buzzer was finally answered, but I was simply told to try again tomorrow! Totally wasted trip! I’d hate to be in an emergency as the buzzer for help is useless! Not a good experience at all

Fantastic experience: I do my own stuff at The Gym (treadmill, weights, exercises) but what I enjoy the most are the yoga stretch classes I do with Mikey at the Shirley gym. Mikey is absolutely brilliant, he engenders such a good upbeat atmosphere right from the off. I attend a couple of his stretch classes a week. He’s so good at talking through each part of a yoga movement; with maybe four steps to a move it might be the fourth step that’s the clinching bit, but he’ll point out this crucial bit as well as all the steps before. And the pacing is just right. Also, he always has advice with any problems, aches and pains, or be there if I need an extra ad-hoc (paid for) class. And of course I’ve improved my flexibility and fitness by attending the classes over the year.

Fantastic experience: Great local gym, been going to this gym for nearly three years and have really enjoyed every workout and classes fit pump, Hyrox, Fit Balance is brilliant. You can book the classes via the gym group app. Highly recommend it, the staff Mikey, Anthony, Pritam & Brodan are very friendly and helpful. The energy and vibe in the gym is very motivating and inclusive. You can park your car in Asda for free.

Negative experience: It's ok, I mean it has most of the machines that you expect. Couple of criticisms though; some of the cable machines are too close to one another, which also means that you'd often find yourself working out right next to someone (quite difficult when you're doing stuff like cable fly's etc...) And also (now this is me comparing it to the digbeth branch), it would be good if they had dumbbells exceeding 38kg.

Positive experience: It’s an ok gym if only there was someone there to tell the school and college kids that this a gym not a playground one minute they’re doing their workouts the next minute the pushing and shoving each other. The equipment is good most of the time if a machine is broken it’s sorted the next so big issue there. I use the gym during the evening so maybe some to clean the gym then as it does get really dirty especially the changing room/toilet.

Negative experience: I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER SINCE NOVEMBER 2015 WHEN IT OPENED. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF ISSUES. THE GYM SHOULD BE ATTENDED BY AT LEAST 1 MEMBER OF STAFF. THIS GYM IS RUN ON A SHOESTRING. EQUIPMENT IS NOT REPAIRED QUICKLY WHEN IT BREAKS DOWN. THE SHOWERS NEED SREVICING. SOME USERS FAIL TO UNLOAD BARBELLS WHEN THEY HAVE FINISHED THEIR SETS. ALSO DUMBELLS NOT PUT BACK WHERE THEY BELONG, ITS UNTIDY AT TIMES. USERS ALSO BRING LARGE KIT BAGS INTO THE GYM AREA CREATING UNTIDINESS, THERE ARE PLENTY OF LOCKERS, NO EXCUSE. ITS JUST A FREE FOR ALL, ITS TIME FOR THOSE AT THE TOP TO VISIT. THERE ARE PLENTY OF STATIONS AND EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE, ITS NOT ALL BAD. I GO BECAUSE ITS LOCAL TO ME.

Negative experience: This is a good gym, however, recently most of the disinfectant spray stations have been removed from around the gym especially the free weights area leaving huge amounts of sweat all over the benches and machines which is pretty gross, please return these as it's quite disgusting and regressive to get to a piece of equipment only to sit or lie on a wet patch and there is no nearby disinfectant spray to wipe it clean, get a grip the gym group please it's just a couple of bottles of spray and blue roll!

Hi, hope you are well. Robust cleaning and sanitising regimes are still in place and we continue to pump in 100% fresh air ventilation, day and night, we clean on a daily basis, including cleaning of all equipment and gym facilities with anti-viral products. We are now going to start reducing the number of cleaning stations through the gym whilst still providing cleaning materials for those members who desire them to clean down kit.

Positive experience: Great local gym, I really enjoy Mikey’s yoga classes, and the new small group training classes. I would prefer there to be more squat racks & deadlift platforms, but I appreciate its a smaller space. Overall I enjoy training at this gym, the location is super convenient :)

Positive experience: Staff are all super friendly and helpful, toilets/ changing rooms are always clean. I like that the gym is 24hr Only down size is it’s kinda small in my opinion can get very crowded/busy during peak hours 5pm till 7pm is the most busy in my opinion

Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to this gym for years and I can say the staff always been friendly, professional and always ready to help. Also, plenty of equipments which are well maintained n never go out of order. Lastly it’s in the ideal location with Asda and other shops are around so I find it very convenient to shop after work out.

Fantastic experience: I have been to many gyms over the years but I would definitely say The Gym Group Shirley is the place to be with a friendly atmosphere and sense of community with the gym goers and staff especially Pritam Singh who I have been having PT sessions with for the past year he has helped me with getting great results and continues to do so with his tailored workout plans and nutritional advice that I have not been able to get with previous personal trainers so would highly recommend him if anyone is looking to kick start their fitness journey.

Fantastic experience: This is the first Gym I signed up to when I first moved to Birmingham and I am so glad that I did. The classes are brilliant, The Gym community, including staff are very accommodating, welcoming and helpful. There is a range of equipment and staff are always available to support you with anything you might need. The energy and vibe in the gym is very motivating and inclusive. Pritam, Mikey and Jamie give advice and guidance to help better yourself and to support you to grow stronger in the right way. The belief they have in you to be the best version of yourself is second to none. Thank you!

Negative experience: The gym is BOILING… I genuinely don’t think it can be a legal temperature for a gym…Ive only recently joined the gym, I’ve been twice and I’m going to have to cancel my membership because within 5 minutes of being in the gym I’m genuinely struggling to breathe and I’m a fit young female.

Positive experience: I want to start by saying, I do love the gym, all the trainers, and the little community it had. Mikeys classes are the single best thing that happens in this gym. If he had classes every night at 6pm I would be there. I love to attend both classes on Mondays and Thursdays. The 45 min classes are the best, I don't like coming to the gym for a 30min class alone, it feels like by the time you're warm, the class is over. However, the air con seriously needs looking at. It leaks out of every vent and is basically on functional in the changing rooms (or that's what it feels like). And from a neurodiverse mind, constantly rearranging the gym is unhelpful, it makes people like myself less likely to venture into the gym outside of class. I understand the need to clean everything, but rearranging ever time there is a deep clean is unnecessary. Also, I appreciate the investment and equipment in the gym , but not at the expense of the older equipment that there's nothing wrong with. Example, the new exercise balls look fantastic, but when I utilise them for core exercises that involve bouncing them off a surface, they bounce in all directions, so that exercise isn't feasible for me anymore. Another example, the old pull up rig was multifunctional and had two spaces for pull ups as well as other uses at the same time. The new rig has space for 3 people to do pull ups, IF nobody else wants to access any equipment DIRTECTLY beneath them. This could be easily resolved by rotating the top half 180 degrees. It is perfectly feasible and practical. To end on a positive note, all off the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They are always on hand to give excellent advice.

Negative experience: Decent gym, but don’t know how people manage to breathe in the gym though, boiling hot. can’t remember the last time the air conditioning ever worked, they always seem to be out of order. just feels like there is no proper ventilation or flow of air, everyone is just happy to breathe each others air that is let out, breathe back in and out until it’s pure co2. As soon as me and my partner exit and go outside, you start to feel normal. I think in this day and age it is important to have good flow of air coming into the gym as well as the air conditioning working in correct manner as it makes it difficult to train the way it is right now. Especially if the gym is like a glass box with windows that can’t be opened. Yes you can pay more and go to a gym that won’t have this issue ever but this has to be the least basic need that every gym should consider and stay on top of?

Fantastic experience: The friendliest gym I’ve ever been a part of! If you, as a user, make the effort to be amenable then you will be rewarded with a friendly greeting from all the gym instructors (usually by name) and a genuine interest in how you are progressing. There’s loads of equipment, I rarely have to wait for anything, and best of all the monthly subscription is a bargain, meaning I can afford to invest in some one-to-one personal training sessions, that the instructors also offer. Couldn’t be happier!

Positive experience: Mikey’s training goes a long way. I enjoy so much in his class that it always motivates to first come to gym and then push my limits to be more fitter via his exercises. His dedication in the classes is next level and I would like to rate him to the top of all trainers as far as classes are concerned having attended almost all classes. Keep going Mikey Mills - you are so good in whatever you do. Best of luck to you and your journey with this gym. Gym would require to have few more amenities however have enough to keep going. The only other feedback was for the body composition and fitness measurements machine - I had taken the premium subscription for this machine and to be honest in never worked for 2.5 months which doesn’t makes sense specially given the number of people comes here

Fantastic experience: Really happy with my induction from Jamie, he showed me how to use and get the most out of the hamstring curl and leg extension machines to assist my rehab and how to assess my body mass. Fantastic experience: I have been at the gym since it opened after years of changing gyms every couple of years based on affordability and convenience. The cost of membership has remained competitive & I was impressed with how lockdown and coming out of it was managed effectively. The staff are friendly and knowledgable, the equipment is good and the free classes are well worth it! The gym is not so local to me after a house move but for the first time I am reluctant to leave ☺️

Fantastic experience: I’ve moved house twice since joining The Gym at Shirley, and despite gyms closer to home, I find I’ve been unable to severe my membership. Not only is it good value for money, but the friendly ethos and sociable environment at the gym is a real antidote after a long day at work. If like me you’re someone who finds it’s difficult to derive inspiration from a piece of machinery and thrives more on cohesive training and a good old kick up the butt from a competent trainer, then I would highly recommend the plethora of classes to suit all levels and timings. Talking of competent trainers, the backbone and real strength of the gym, I would say, is the staff here who are really welcoming and helpful. I’m a regular for the evening classes and feel I need to give a shout out to these unsung heroes who’ve helped me release more endorphins than l ever thought possible. There's cool as a cucumber Pritam with his infectious zen-like energy makes training look easy peasy. He’s a fantastic instructor and really knows how to break down steps so that even after undergoing boot camp, you walk away refreshed and relaxed. Conversely, Adam takes no prisoners; his hawklike gaze does not miss a trick. So if he catches you cutting corners or missing out the challenging bits, he’ll make you wish you hadn’t, although you’re always thankful for it afterwards. Uma Thurman has nothing on Sally, who is the Beatrix Kiddo for all you Kill Bill fans. A workout with her is like receiving the five point palm exploding heart technique, yet she keeps you coming back for more. But the real star of the show is Mikey (from Waikiki). He exudes positivity in abundance; a selfless instructor and an all round wonderful human being. He goes out of his way to make each and every person feel special and always goes that extra mile, whether it’s in one of his classes or in a PT session. Every gym needs a Mikey! If you’re looking to keep in shape or simply want to keep those cheeky calories in check, then you should join The Gym at Shirley, where the atmosphere to train in is just great.
