Camberwell Leisure Centre

Negative experience: The gym recently closed for several weeks for total refurbishment, yet the results are highly disappointing. The Technogym equipment has been replaced with cheaper alternatives, and the layout of the functional area seems poorly thought out, leaving little to no floor space for mat workouts—especially in front of the mirrors. There’s a limited selection of small dumbbells, with just one pair of 5kg weights available. The changing rooms remain unchanged, with the same unresolved issues as before. And what’s going on with the fire alarms? It seems to happen frequently, with yesterday being particularly frustrating—30 minutes standing outside in the cold and rain, alongside children in their swimwear. This is unacceptable. Southwark, after such a prolonged closure, we expected much better. Please address these concerns promptly.

Fantastic experience: I have been using the Camberwell Leisure centre for many years and have seen it continuously improve. The team are friendly, delivering customer service with a smile every day. They are very responsive and, in my opinion, have always taken the views, complaints/concerns of customers very seriously acting on them in a timely manner. The facilities are great and the specialists such as swim school teachers are excellent. I love the family feel of the leisure centre and young people are welcomed. Zehra, the manager, is fantastic and truly has a heart for the community; she is an absolute breath of fresh air and has really made the leisure centre feel like an important part of the community welcoming everyone in and taking health, wellness and fitness outside of the building and into the local area for all the enjoy. The new gym looks absolutely fantastic! Well done Camberwell!

Positive experience: While the new refurbishment is nice with new machines, I’m disappointed they got rid of a lot of machines ( no stair master, hip abductor/ adductor machine, leg extension etc.) these were machines commonly used and have heard good others say the same. I just don’t understand why not have these when it looks like there is space for them.

Negative experience: Rude and ignorant member of staff ( Manager lady ) Changing rooms and toilets smells. Hot temperature in the gym area ( no air condition was working properly) Good gym equipment.

Fantastic experience: Amazing new refurb, highly recommended!

Fantastic experience: One of the best public pools in London. The pool has been beautifully renovated with lots of natural light and there's a small training pool next to the fully accessible 25m main pool. It's kept at around 27C. The staff are friendly and helpful, the place is kept clean and tidy. When all the changing rooms have been renovated, and the scaffolding outside is remove, dit will be close to perfection.

Fantastic experience: My experience at Camberwell leisure centre is a positive one, the gym and changing area is always clean and the temperature in the gym perfect staff is always welcoming and cheerful, one of the managers Zehra was particularly helpful with enquiries I had regarding facilities at the centre, I'm looking forward to the refurbishment and what it has to offer.

Positive experience: Staff are extremely helpful, the building itself is large and spacious, but the equipment and fixtures are looking tired. Odd layout of equipment too!

Fantastic experience: The gym is contained in a great lofty space with sky lights so however full it might get there is always room to breath . The atmosphere generated by the staff who are highly motivated and friendly is a very positive feature . Lucky to have this excellent resource in central Camberwell

Fantastic experience: What a delightful first swimming experience here whilst visiting a friend nearby this week. Stunningly renovated and restored Victorian building, beautifully clean ( cleaning staff member working hard nearby as I swam and very friendly ) approachable, thoughtful and helpful reception person. Free hairdryers , easy to navigate website for booking. I only wish I could visit more often. Thank you so much

Fantastic experience: Having attended Camberwell Leisure Centre for a few months now I feel qualified to leave my opinion here in the hope that it will encourage others to attend this excellent facility. In particular I have been impressed by how inclusive it is with staff actively welcoming groups from a local school which caters for autistic adults. This place is definitely for the community, as friendly and caring trainers remove the stigma attached to gym attendance for all cultures and ages. I must also mention the wonderful receptionist Mia who always presents an incomparable sense of professionalism , yet manages to somehow incorporate humour into this as well. She makes every visit a delight. Congratulations to all of you, this gym has become a second home to me.

Fantastic experience: I have been attending this gym for 6 months and I must say the staff are so helpful i had a gp referral membership and when it was expired the manager and staff at reception strived at excellence to help me renew. The gym is lovely and I am very exited to hear about this refurbishment coming in June/July and I’m yet to try the pool. Shoutout to everyone here for the lovely services you all provide.

Fantastic experience: I have been going to Camberwell for the last two years now It’s always been kept nice and tidy members of staff always friendly whatever the morning 50% of the staff I am on they know my name they’re always nice and polite the changing rooms and the gym are really good. The changing rooms are nice and clean the gym it’s always got equipment, whatever you need and the rates of the membership per month are very reasonable for what you get out of it

Negative experience: I asked a staff member if he dated a young woman in the gym so he gave me a bad look and attitude. I lost my temper a bit and yelled at him and other staff members for not understanding me personally. I was only trying to be friendly and was wanting a job there because I'm a qualified L3 PT nutritionist and fitness instructor. This was blown way out of proportion and I didn't like it so I left. The lack of understanding amongst Southwark civilians and myself was incredible. Peace x

Fantastic experience: I’ve been using this gym for over 3 years now and I can honestly say that the staff are super lovely following every visit, the classes are great and I highly recommend dance fitness and body pump. They are currently in the process of a gym refurbishment and I can’t wait to see the results. Keep up the good work!

Negative experience: I visited here today for the first time since it stopped being everyone active and also since the pandamic. It was free gym for southwark residents on sunday so I thought id go and see if its been done up. Whilst the reception area had a lick of paint. The equipment in the gym was old and dirty..the dumbbells, kettle bells and weights in the weight room were really knackered looking. I spent around 10min cleaning a bench to use, the tissue was still black. It was filthy!!!! I stayed for a 15min workout only but couldn't wait to get out and wash my hands. I didnt even want to lay down my yoga mat on the floor! I would of been really annoyed if I still had a paid membership.

Negative experience: Extremely limited and badly timed slots for normal lane swimming for exercise and huge concessions for over 60s but none for students, the unemployed in general, or younger people that aren't kids. Not great.

Fantastic experience: Been a gym member for a more than five years. The classes are nice, love the pilates class, body pump or salsation class. Friendly staff and a new good selection of equipment. Nice and relaxed atmosphere in this gym compared to others. Now gym is in under the council and is in refurbish progress at the moment.i Looking forward to seeing final result. Would definitely recommend.

Negative experience: If you like being chased and interrupted by a lady with a vacuum cleaner during peak hours, this is the gym for you. If you like your gym equipment to have a thick layer of dust and sweat from before the pandemic, look no further. When you finish your workout, and yearning to wash your hands, don’t get too excited, because there’s hardly ever any hand wash. It was when I asked the cleaner in the changing room if they had any hand cleaner - and he proceeded to pour some strong acidic floor cleaner in my hands - it was then that I decided to cancel my membership. Staff look like they hate working there and occupy gym equipment while having chats with their friends. It’s a shame this place became such a hole.

Fantastic experience: I had a great experience at this pool. The receptionists are friendly and welcoming. My swim teacher Mathew was amazing, in only a few sessions I was able to build up my confidence to go back to swimming. Points for improvement are the changing rooms where some of the showers have no doors but I think they are planning to refurbish soon. Definitively good value for money!

Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member for about two months now, I use their gym and it’s a nice gym with equipment and not busy too much and the good point is that it never smells bad inside the gym so that’s why I like this place. The staffs are polite and helpful and There are many shops and cafes around.

Positive experience: Lovely warm pool, the exercise classes are very good. My only wish would be to have more classes available in the evening. I received a warm and friendly welcome from all the staff. Overall the facilities at the centre are good. Could do with updating, and some of appliances are not working ie: hair dryers. Also some of the lockers are broken and could do with replacing.

Positive experience: I have used the swimming pool for about a couple of months. The changing rooms are being cleaned my staff most of the time. The shower area looks old, lacking some doors and poor light, the water is fine. The atmosphere in the pool is not too crowded but I was shocked when I bought my new goggles and discovered the water is much dirtier than what I thought. Could you clean the pool water and the pool floor more often please? Very good price membership and helpful staff

Negative experience: If you’re lucky to get to the swimming pool in the morning you’ll find the changing area dry and clean but as they day goes on, it is rarely cleaned and always wet. Staff members look miserable and just want to make problems, tell you off for stuff - told us not to use goggles covering the nose and even though I was right next to my son, I was told I needed to be with him physically while they didn’t make problems with other people. Water in the pool is cold. I like the gym and the swimming pool, just wish the staff members were more friendly.

Negative experience: HORRIBLE!!!!!! all swim teachers are rude and make jokes about you that are not funny but rude and tried to teach me how to us how to swim with out a float on the 2ND LESSON and singles me out just because I couldn't really float when all the others we trying to float with 1 noodle I had to have to which didn't even help it made me embarrassed and then while every one else was swimming with out a float I still had to use two I find it really rude that they don't help others that can't reall swim that the whole reason why swimming lessons exit I find it very rude that I get singled out the last thing is that the changing rooms floor is extremely wet and no one drys it!!!! So we end up having to do it our selfs it's so wet that my classmates and I have slipped and almost cracked our heads open I unfortunately go swimming with. my school so I can't not go!!!! My rating is -1000/ 100

Fantastic experience: First time at the pool and it was fab!

Fantastic experience: I've been using this facility for a couple of months now and have to say I'm very pleased with it. The swimming pool is fairly standard as are the changing/shower facilities, tbh they could do with a revamp but for the price of membership you really can't grumble. The gym is very well equipped and user friendly. Lastly and most importantly I have found all the staff to be friendly and professional.

Positive experience: I was helped by a wonderful customer service rep at the leisure centre. Zehra was wonderful so helpful and warm I will definitely be returning. Tbh each Time I’ve visits I’ve received a great service.

Fantastic experience: Very good gym, pool and staff. The only tiny boring thing is that in order to go to the pool, you have to book previously and there are not many available times on the weekend or at 6pm during the week. Anyway, apart of that, all good!!!

Positive experience: Been taking my two children here for swimming lessons even before the pandemic. While the centre itself could do with some modernisation, the swimmer teachers are excellent, especially Mathew, whom both of my kids have nothing but good things to say of.

Negative experience: I've never seen dirtier changing rooms in a swimming pool in my life. Literal mud on the floor: how hard is it to set up a rack for shoes at the entrance? The 1h slot system is too restrictive as well. Other than that, the pool is OK.

Positive experience: It's a good gym and a nice swimming pool but I wish they would look after the facilities itself - mould everywhere, doors missing in the dressing rooms or falling off, dirty vents. It could be so much better but good for the membership price but the little things do help. The building itself is such a lovely building pity they are not looking after it properly.

Positive experience: First time coming to the gym. Has a great number of equipments and very tidy. Receptionist was very kind. Would definitely come back again. Much better than one in Peckham as I didn’t like the atmosphere there.

Fantastic experience: The staff here a really lovely, always very helpful and kind! Zarah is a great receptionist, the swim teachers are great too. The classes are nice, love the yoga here, the hiit is killer, you get a good burn! All round, great place to get fit , everyone is really professional. The cards don’t always work, but again it hasn’t been a huge issue for me since I’ll just speak to reception

Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff on entrance, changing area is big and it’s a bring your own padlock method to use the lockers. The gym is a good size, on the deadlifts today and as far as I could see there are two stations for deadlifts, there’s alot of floor space if those stations were taken. I had no problem at all as both stations were free. Took my time and hogged the station for a good 15 mins. All the machines looked brand new, some cable machines looked different; they had handles permanently threaded in, instead of the traditional carabina. The only small issues I had was there didn’t seem to be any kettle bells, also I couldn’t see a lying hamstring station, I could be wrong. Overall, really, really good.

Positive experience: As far as gyms go this one is not bad. Decent range of equipment, none of the regulars are 'off putting' and the staff are pleasant enough. Pool is great too, gets a bit hectic over weekends but thats to be expected.

Negative experience: Beautiful pool, but the people who run it are clearly more interested in profit than community. Good luck if you want to swim in it without booking swim lessons. Free swimming sessions are as rare as hens' teeth, even though the swim lessons are so poorly subscribed that they could easily split the pool to allow others to use. We tried to go on Sunday with our family of four, and they told us that the kid's pool was closed because they didn't have enough life guards. Guess why? Because they were running a training session for all of their life guards! I get that life guards need training, but couldn't they spare a single life guard to watch over the kids pool?? Inconsiderate.

Positive experience: I like using this gym. Nice size pool, lots of lockers, nice range of equipment and never too packed. It would get 5 stars if the pool changing rooms were cleaned more regularly and some of the faulty gym equipment fixed. The car park is also full of trash and Southwark council need to look into this.

Fantastic experience: Personally this swimming pool centre is one of a kind and has very friendly staff. The water is always warm and it’s good in other ways because you can stay there until ten without a problem, the changing rooms are always clean and presentable and there is always a life guard just in case something happens to a member of the public(Costumers) I rate this a good golden 10 because of the reasons I have said so I strongly suggest that you should go and there is nothing to worry about either.

Negative experience: The new manager from Newcastle is turning it into a racist gym (only black people get told they can't come in the gym with bags ) and if you get bullied in the gym and try defend your self you will get band

Negative experience: Facilities are minimal, groups of gang members in the gym area. You will wait 10minutes to get in as the reception is always overcrowded. Large groups of unattended children playing with the gym equipment. This place is a joke! Don't waste your money!
