Hi Nick, thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We are equally as disappointed when, from time to time, things go wrong and equipment has to be placed out of order. Regular maintenance checks are undertaken, and any issues identified are escalated to engineers straight away. Sometimes, there may be a small wait whilst engineers attend to fix any issues, but we endeavour to resolve these as soon as possible. Over the past 3-4 months, I have had the pleasure of engaging with their comprehensive resistance training classes and flexibility enhancement programs. The instructors, notably Danny Stephens and Joanna Diamond, demonstrate exceptional expertise in designing and delivering exercise protocols that cater to diverse fitness levels. Danny's Box Fit and Legs Bum and Tums classes have been instrumental in enhancing my muscular strength, power, and overall athleticism, while Joanna's Stretch classes have yielded remarkable improvements in my flexibility . Positive experience: For a Pure Gym it's not bad, equipment is clean and fairly new and haven't seen anything broken (apart from the yanga drink machine).

Positive experience: I really like this gym..it's affordability that doesn't bind you into a contract. You can go when you have the money and freeze your membership when things get tight. Freeing you up to cover other essentials. I just wish it had a sauna

Negative experience: Going downhill very fast since the loss of a good manager. I will go elsewhere
Fantastic experience: Quality all-in classes here mean PureGym is outstanding value. The passion of Mark, Ricardo, Joanna, Emma, Danny and Adam are matched by their skill in running challenging classes. I’ve never been a fan of the gym, or PE, but 12 weeks of regular attendance has seen me lose 3kg and reduce my body fat proportion by 9%.
Negative experience: After nearly 2.5 years, I've decided to move on. While the convenience of 24/7 access was appreciated, I've grown tired of the constant equipment malfunctions and repetitive excuses. The staff are fantastic and not to blame, but it's evident that the company lacks concern for its loyal members, which is truly disappointing.
Positive experience: too busy
Positive experience: Recently signed up to St Alban's puregym as it more convenient than pumpgym in Hatfield I was previously a member of. I'm a bit disappointed of this gym, it's pretty small with limited weight machines (I.e. 1 cable lat pulldown) which are also pretty old although there are enough free weights. Also the squat racks are terrible as you can't move the safety down so you hit it. The one benefit of this gym is it's pretty quiet when I've been, especially compared to pumpgym which was crazy busy. Price is okay but more than what I was paying before. Overall it's an okay gym if you want to sacrifice some equipment for a quieter experience.

Positive experience: Broken water fountain down stairs. Downstairs seems cramped and upstairs seems sparse and has too much space. Think machines need to be moved around a bit.

Positive experience: I have been with Pure Gym St Albans for just over a month now. I find their facilities well looked after and their bathrooms clean. This has been a great change from some of the other branches of Pure Gym I have been to that were disappointing, which caused me to cancel my memberships shortly after. Negative experience: Booked a gym session at 10pm Tuesday 27th of Feb. Then went to the gym and arrived at 00:00 Wednesday 28th of Feb to find that my two day passes had been null and void before I even entered the gym. As a day pass I would like to hope that it would be 24hrs from when it is booked. As it was not and was stated to be valid for the 24hrs I would really appreciate someone helping me solve this problem.

Negative experience: First time visiting St Albans Puregym. It's er... underwhelming at best. Equipment feels cheap and shoddy, and a lot of it is loose in places or out of order. Cramped inside, changing rooms are meh. Doesn't feel welcoming at all. Might use it the odd occasion, but I think I'd rather use the new Hatfield one or Stevenage, which is a bit of a trek but much nicer. Equipment seems very close together. Granted, this is only the second gym I've been to, but I definitely didn't feel great after a session here. Seems to be the staff like to powertrip here (which has been mentioned a few times in reviews), was spoken to quite rudely by one of the workers here (short guy syndrome, I think). He could also do with a lesson on using indoor voices, could hear him over my music... definitely better gyms around in St Albans than this.

Negative experience: Groups of leering men making disgusting comments during workout and even continuing to make comments in the car park. Whole experience disappointed and left feeling unsafe

Positive experience: Generally an alright gym, been coming for years, gets a bit too busy at times… most of the staff are great however one of the employees has a bit of a power trip. I accidentally left my weights on the bar and forgot to remove them before moving onto the next piece of equipment and an employee came over and told me to put them away - rightly so - I said I was very sorry and had forgotten to put them away…. then as I went back to remove them I could hear her muttering something under her breathe. She was right to call me out but not the greatest of attitudes

Positive experience: Facilities are exactly what they say they are at pure gym, changing rooms are kept clean and the pure gym personal trainers are great. Only thing I would have to say is the air conditioning at pure gym is unfortunately not always on high enough so in the hot weather it can be almost unbearable. I would have to add that the spin class music is on way too loudly. Apart from this, I really enjoy Pure Gym and it will always be my favourite gym.

Negative experience: I had a bit of a mishap tonight using the elliptical machine my towel slipped and got stuck under the runners, i approached 2 members of staff who didnt help me, 1 was with a client the other running late for a class (he told me he was free at 8) by tht point i would have been waiting 40 mins for help! I appreciate they had commitments but to leave me standing there with no help is not on, at this point i was ready to leave my towel and just walk out, i then approaching the 3rd member of staff who also was with a client and was more than happy to assist an stepped away from his client for all of 10 seconds thanks to ricardo for the help.

Positive experience: The gym itself is fine. Has mostly everything you need. It’s quite small, but for the price it’s acceptable. Music is always too loud! Would prefer no music at all. Everyone listens to their own thing anyway.

Positive experience: Please fix the leg extension (St. Alban's branch). It has t worked properly since August - foot/shin pad does lock properly. Can't get into a comfortable position - adding more pressure to the top of the foot

Negative experience: Gym and equipment is good, shame I can't actually get on any of it and it's nearly 9pm! Been the same on my 4 visits so far. Oh and it stinks. I will be canceling ASAP

Negative experience: If you like to work out with intensity and purpose, go to a different gym. This gym is rammed at all times with 'casual' gym goers. Nothing wrong with that, but this is the mecha for 'i dont really want to workout'. You WILL wait for equipment each time you train unless you fancy using random pieces of kit - which i dont. The gym is full of 13-18 year olds who hog all the equipment as they take turns on it with the most abysmal form/intensity you will ever see as well adults who still get their backside wiped by their mothers as they leave their weights on. Like i said, if you want to workout with likeminded people who actually want to progress and have some self and peer respect, DONT go to this gym.

Positive experience: The issue with the PureGym is that the trainers play their music in small areas of the gym like it is a disco and can feel the vibration of the music. Great place to keep fit and not so great to lose one's hearing over time with the loud music!

Fantastic experience: One of the best PureGym I ever been! Every thing is organised people/stuff are respectful and everything is nice.Good place for a propper workout.I recently changed it to my maine gym.is it 10x better then Southgate London where I used to go!

Negative experience: Music is so so loud and the changing rooms are filthy and smell like a fish factory, I’m literally afraid to touch anything sorry but this gym is so dirty and loud for no reason.

Negative experience: Be prepared for cold showers during winter and hot showers during summer as it lacks individually temperature controlled showers. To overcome this in this summer, they turned off completely the temperature of one (out of three) showers (!) leading to queues - non-sense in my opinion - just installed temperature controlled ones. Also a shame that there are no bike racks nearby. Bike sheds could easily be installed over two or three parking spaces, as nicely done in The Range (Iceland) just down the road. Apart from that, this gym has a friendly atmosphere, good price and it is well equipped.

The temperatures of the showers in our gyms are automatically regulated by Smart machines but if there is a persistent issue staff may be able to override it and can certainly report it to be checked by engineers. We only have ownership of the building the gym is situated in and we don't own any of the external space/parking area, so we would be unable to add any bike racks ourselves; this would be down to the discretion of the owners of the car park. In the meantime, I really do hope this does not put you off from attending the gym. Thanks, PureGym
Fantastic experience: It's a clean, safe environment with all the equipment I need. Good value (if you go regularly) and you can cancel or freeze the membership any time. Convenient that it's always open if I happen to wake up really early. If I had to criticise one thing, it can be noisy when a class is on and there's always background music even though everyone is wearing earphones. But all gyms seem to do that.

Positive experience: Cool, clean and relatively tidy by Puregym standards. Some obvious bits of kit missing or lesser quality installed. i.e. squat racks with fixed safety bars, so you can't bench, or do rack pulls, deadweight bench press. Only one lat pull down machine which is always in use, and no cable row machine or effective calf raise machine (it's the daft ankle mobility device so never really loads the calfs).... Changing rooms are tiny, and only one loo for lads, and the disabled loos are kept locked by the cleaner until he finishes so you may have to use the girls if you in early and need to go in a hurry! Staff don't do a full reset in the evening which is annoying, so expect to be hunting for kit and the morning.... and machines and bench presses that have a habit of walking over time, are never move back by staff... so they often end up in dangerous positions or blocking the so called olympic lifting platform. So if your gonna snatch and clean, just clear a place in the functional fitness area.

Positive experience: It's a great gym! The main weights area could be a bit larger and can feel crowded during peak times. But the cardio area is quite spacious. I go late evenings (after 10) and it's a much more relaxed place then. It feels quite safe even at those late hours. Equipment-wise, it has enough to satisfy some of the super-fit folk that turn up so I guess it has something for everyone! Updates after a few months of use - still a great gym. Handy location and good equipment.

Fantastic experience: This is the first gym that I try in the UK and it’s fantastic! Love all the classes during the week and the staff is very friendly. They always push you to give your best every moment. I have added a few recommendations into the website and they have put them in place for this New Year so it makes me feel comfortable that they listen to their customers and their needs. Fantastic experience: Due to moving out of the area I couldn't continue my one to one training sessions with Adam Pritchard. He was inspiring and positive and so engaging. Being over 50 he tailored a programme for my needs and goals and I never felt that I was unable to reach the goals that we both set ! Thank you Adam, sorry it was brief but appreciate how you guided me and made me feel that regaining my fitness was possible ! I would also like to mention that the classes were excellent . Held in the an excellent environment and great team of staff.

Positive experience: One of the better gyms I've been in. Staff is friendly and always at hand. There is an adequate amount of both free weights and machines for isolation training. They are quite active with courses, they have two designated areas for the classes and one can use them when they aren't used for said purpose, which might sound as a given yet so many gyms restrict you from using those kinds of facilityes so that's a welcome change. The gym is quite large and spacious I almost never had problems like having to wait to use something, there is the always present lug who's more interested in taking selfies and playing games on their phones which is infuriating but I digress overall it's an ok gym in my book!

Negative experience: Had great experiences since joining last year November especially Ricardo's classes in the last few months. I got pretty busy recently so had to cancel a couple of booked classes and missed some which I forgot to cancel. You'd expect that if any actions are to be taken based on that, you'll be alerted through email to explain why and how long it'll last for, or a warning on the app. I only realised that I couldn't book classes anymore with no explanations, couldn't contact anyone and only directs you to cancel direct debit if you want to cancel membership. I waited a couple of weeks to see if it'll last a few days but seemed there was no end to this which was pointless keeping a premium membership. I was still being charged monthly fees and felt insulted so decided to cancel my membership. There's no follow up when they lose a customer. Seems customers are less of value to them as we're just one of their multiple numbers and if you leave, it doesn't matter so don't see a need to have good communication systems in place.

Classes must be cancelled four hours before they are due to start; this gives members who are on the waiting list, a chance to attend the class or cancel. Failure to do so, will result in a strike. Three strikes from late cancellations or non attendance in a 28 day period, will result in an eight day booking restriction. If you are on the waiting list and you receive a notification stating you have a place on the class with less than 4 hours notice, but are unable to attend or cancel late, then you will not receive a strike. However, if you are on the waiting list and receive notification that you have a place on the class with 4 or more hours notice and fail to attend or cancel in time, then you will receive a strike. You will still be able to attend the gym however. With this being said, we do understand that there may be times where an unforeseen circumstance arises and this results in a missed class or a class cancelled late. We ask that you get in touch, so that we can discuss the matter further. Thanks, PureGym

Fantastic experience: This is a great gym. Over two floors, plenty of smith machines, dumbells, squat racks, weights machines, cables etc, as well as a lot of treadmills, a spin class, some other bikes and rowers, and a few other classes. Really friendly too. More for weight training than anything else but something for everyone

Positive experience: The men's changing room sink had a horrible snot and hairs in the long shared sink? It was so disgusting it left a horrible memory and very uncomfortable feeling in the men's changing room. Apart from that a cleaner was hoovering the stairs and cleaning away.

We’re very sorry to hear about these issues as we take our standards very seriously. Staff do regular cleaning checks in the gym and we have dedicated cleaning teams who come each night to carry out and comply with internal and external audits. Of course, during peak times it can be difficult for us to compete all cleaning routines, however as soon as it is possible our staff will complete all procedures and checks. If you have concerns with the cleanliness in your gym we can check the cleaning rotas and ensure all procedures are being followed. Positive experience: Pretty small PureGym compared with others. The choice of machines are decent, although just really close together, particularly where the barbell rack is. All the machines are kept in good condition, other members often sanitise the equipment too.
Negative experience: Reply below is just words - PUREGYM are not doing anything to safeguard customers or their staff! ONLY GO TO THIS GYM IF YOU WANT TO CATCH COVID19!!! The gym is rammed packed and a free for all no pandemic safe guards - the gym will be a super spreader event. - No masks are worn - staff said it is not legally enforced - No social distancing - No booking system activated - free for all, the gym is packed out. - No track or trace - No booking system or track or trace how do you know if the gym is a super spreader. - Nobody answering complaints or feedback form - Only email was letting me know they will not post my feedback on their website. No contact to resolved issues. - Pure gym are lying on social media saying their gyms are safe, they are not. - Pure gym lying on the website saying their gyms are safe, they are not. - Pure gym are not answering my feedback or complaints

Positive experience: Need more sanitising stations on each gym floor. Members also need reminding that water fountains are only for filling up water bottles. Saw a guy drink from it twice in one session, ridiculous!

Fantastic experience: Love this gym! Lots of equipment. Good range of classes, although, as the class sizes are reduced due to covid, they can get booked up quickly (especially spin). Personal trainers are available and it is these guys and girls, who also instruct the classes, that make the whole gym experience a positive one for me

Positive experience: Great gym. Clean, not so busy. Loads of space so not to break distancing laws. Highly recommended.

I think if PureGym added some equipment for calves, a cable row machine and thicker Olympic bars it would be the perfect gym !
