Marshall Street Leisure Centre and Spa: Opinions
Positive experience: Well looked after and welcoming. Good vibes, love swimming pool. Alas, hasn’t got a café to socialise.
Positive experience: The centre has a beautiful 30 metre swimming pool which is impeccably clean. The changing rooms and showers are modern and spacious. The staff on reception and the lifeguards are friendly and professional. The reason for the 4 star rating is the Everyone Active App. Swimming lessons and training sessions occur regularly. It would be helpful if days and times were indicated on the booking system. This would give members an informed choice about attending when lane availability is limited.
Fantastic experience: Great venue in the heart of Soho. Amazing pool.
Negative experience: Not clean and recently no longer have towels for rent, causing a lot of inconvenience
Negative experience: I regularly go to this centre specifically for the pool. It is a very beautiful pool and is a comfortable temperature. However, it is very dirty. The water is always full of hair and plasters, and there is algae collecting on the tiles. The changing rooms are very small and after 5pm it is almost impossible to use them. They are also not the cleanest. It has potential to be a lovely facility if they take more time to look after it.
Negative experience: I love the place, but unfortunately the pool and the changing facilities are so dirty! There is hair everywhere and mould in the pool. Staff walks in the pool area with regular shoes and the whole area is unhygienic. It would be great if a more strict regime was adhered to, as the place is beautiful. It is just so unpleasant to get changed in a dirty place.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant
Negative experience: Member of staff walking about like a prison officer talking to members that have paid £600 plus a year in a rude manner..staff do not seem very friendly towards customer …local cabbie working in area .not recommended
Fantastic experience: A lovely pool in a really convenient location. The water was a comfortable temperature, and although you need to book a time on the website, you aren't rushed to get out. What really made this an enjoyable experience was the fabulous lady working at the reception (sorry I didn't catch her name!)-she was so friendly and welcoming!
Negative experience: This is the fifth time ( in the past two months) that I am "trying" the swimming pool at the weekend ( and the second after calling just an hour prior to visiting); the pool is always closed, for some unspecified incident and am told it will or might reopen later in the day.
Positive experience: I only used the pool here. The receptionist was lovely and helpful. It was easy enough to book online. The changing rooms and showers are good enough (not amazing but perfectly functional!). The pool is nice but slightly run-down. It's a really beautiful art deco space but could definitely use a makeover.
Negative experience: I had a very bad experience at this gym. It is not well-suited for disabled users, especially those with non-visible disabilities. I encountered difficulties related to my disability. Additionally, I found mold in the changing room, dirty and poorly maintained toilets, and issues with the showers. Some users showed a lack of concern for cleanliness, and the open showers lacked privacy. There were also instances of disrespect for personal space and boundaries. The spa area felt more like a busy cafe than a relaxing space. Furthermore, someone in the changing room behaved inappropriately towards me, making me feel uncomfortable and unsafe. swimming pool seems to be not very clean. Unfortunately, for 55£ a month anyone can find a better place to go. I have reported and a week after no one have said anything, showing a poor lack Of management
Negative experience: Gym is great. The spa is full of weird people. One guy keeps bringing 2L Dettol bottle with him inside the steam and poisons everyone with toxic fumes for over a year now. I reported him three times hoping he will be banned. Well no one banned him, nor even warned him! A friend just told me he visited the spa again with a smaller water bottle full of fertile again! The steam was smelling of it when I entered it an hour after he left! Totally unacceptable! Please complain about this and please stop using the steam at this gym as you are harming yourself, do your own research about toxic fumes from dettol in steam room!! Picture below is from the same day I made my second complain about this person in May 2024!
Negative experience: For years the showers here are either boiling hot or too cold. Often they are boiling hot. You also don’t have privacy and the shower is in an open space. Secondly they have scammy business practice. They increase prices and they don’t notify you till the 21st of the month. “Please note as per our Terms & Conditions, if the date is after the 20th of the month(when you want to cancel), please do not cancel your direct debit until after the 3rd of the following month.” It means you don’t have time to cancel the price increases. You have to pay them at least once and without any chance to cancel before. The have increased their prices already twice in less than a year
Negative experience: Don’t go here, it’s very run down. The floor all around the pool is soaking so it’s very easy to slip. The pool water is very gross and the actual pool floor is very brown, looks like they haven’t cleaned the bottom of the pool in years. Also very busy.
Negative experience: The pool area has posters for kids telling about all the safety rules but yet they’re not allowed in the pool. Go figure.
Fantastic experience: Reaz very good servís
Fantastic experience: This gym was really good stuff and they are caring the customers and I like it because this gym has really nice swimming pool everything was great
Positive experience: Gym is basic but has most machines and isnt too busy. Spa has 2 saunas and 1 steam room. Only 1 cold shower, would benefit from a 2nd one or a cold plunge
Fantastic experience: First class classic 1930's Pool Well refurbished one of the best in its class of old style pools a gem
Negative experience: Trying to find a timetable on their website for swimming is so convoluted and there isn't one in the end! I just want to see what's happening in the pool today!!!! No one answers the phone!!!!! Do you want people to visit?
Fantastic experience: Such good price in central London and great gym/pool
Positive experience: I feel I can't judged this gym too harshly given how cheap it is. However the standards are slipping quite considerably, literally everything is broken. At one point, the female changing rooms had no working sinks for 3 weeks (nice and hygienic post covid!). The pool is pretty grim, the entrance gates don't work, the gym equipment is broken. It's a shame really as it's centrally located and is quite big so has so much potential.
Negative experience: Extremely dirty swimming pool. I did a scuba diving course recently, and saw loads of dirtiness in the water, and the inside walls were mouldy. My class mates and even the instructor said the same, and acknoweldge they have a big hygene problem in this gym.
Fantastic experience: Neighborhood health club with a 100 foot (a bit over 30 meters) stunning marble swimming pool an art deco setting.
Fantastic experience: Nice folk
Negative experience: Turns out it was too good to be true. I booked a swim in advance in the slow lane for a morning swim. There was 1 lane with 8 of us in, I lasted 5 mins before giving up as it was such a horrible experience to be right behind someone and someone behind you too. Open to members was one fast lane and one slow lane, the rest were booked for lessons. When booking there were 12 spaces for the slow lane, 8 was bad enough so I can’t see how they would have had 12 people in one lane. In the changing rooms there were a couple of others saying how busy and unsafe it felt. I was trialling the centre to see if I wanted to join, I definitely won’t be back again.
Positive experience: A good place
Positive experience: Pool needs some cleaning. It was OK but not as nice as I'd hoped.
Negative experience: 26 year old personal trainer and I’ve been around quite a few gyms and pools. This is one of the worst I’ve been to. I’ve been to the pool 3 times. On two of those occasions I’ve felt sick the next day abd suffered. It’s not surprising- the floors are really dirty and the changing rooms smell unsanitary. Will not be going back and do not recommend you join. The lady at reception is too good for this place - thank you for being so lovely
Fantastic experience: I think the gym is very good. I did try the pool several times which is awesome as you can swim easily and all lanes. I found the water too cold for me in winter. The main issue however there appears to be one swimmer difficult in the fast lane. This person attended two of the three times I attended and had fights with other swimmers in the fast lane with shouting. I hope he is banned now but lifeguards tried best to mediate but I stopped swimming after that. Never had any issue in yoga or gym like this. There is a yoga studo which I go to once but that is too hot for me but it’s run by another organization more yoga. I see the guys doing hot yoga so I suspect most people don’t mind but it’s nice to shower after yog. I may be sensitive to temperatures but overall and given other options locally very good council facility excellent.
Positive experience: Nice staff at reception Squat rack is newer than Virgin Active Overall very good considering the location and price. Come to know this place because of doing hot yoga class with Moreyoga
Fantastic experience: Older building but did a nice yoga class here.
Fantastic experience: Fab gym and great indoor swimming pool right in the heart of London. They have a spa with sauna and steam room too. Their fees are very reasonable considering their position in the city. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities. Pool is so beautiful and classes are great.
Negative experience: Terrible service, women’s changing rooms were disgustingly dirty and smelt of piss! Only stated women’s swimming session but had male lifeguard! Just defeated the pourpose of all women’s session!
Negative experience: So dirty and unhygienic it could do with an investigation
Fantastic experience: Great pool for swimming, looks like original marble, with other great gym facilities and open showers. Don’t need membership, day pass available
Positive experience: Person on concessions with health issues should have a special yearly membership including heat treatments for a special price
Positive experience: Extremely friendly staff: big shout to Larisa. Nice community. Also, you get a swimming pool and sauna for an incredibly low price. The facilities though could use some refurbishment, especially the locker rooms and shorts that could have cubicles. Faster maintenance would be great, and soap could be refilled every once in a while.
Positive experience: Interesting. Great building, not so great re some of the facilities given the fees - tho' staff are lovely not all as it seems.
Fantastic experience: Its a wgitr marble swimming pool
Fantastic experience: I don't live in London but when I travel to London I go to Marshall Street to swim. Last week I went twice and both times Jeanne at reception was exceptionally welcoming . She is such a friendly and helpful person. She made my day on both occasions.
Fantastic experience: One of my favourite spots in London for some sweat and relaxation.
Fantastic experience: A nice pool for a quick swim. 25m, a gym steam and sauna.
Fantastic experience: I like this center because it’s close to my job. Dance fitness is so cool. Hot yoga is incredible!!! Clean showers. Thank you!
Positive experience: A disappointment as each time l go there, the ladies changing room is rather dirty even though they claim they get it cleaned and even the room for other activities. I stopped being a member for a number of reasons.
Fantastic experience: cool history and easy to book
Fantastic experience: Great pool in heart of city Great staff Love it here
Fantastic experience: Soho's best kept secret
Fantastic experience: Great staff, very friendly and helpful and lovely building / swimming pool! Four different lanes (two slow, a medium and a fast) which made it very beginner friendly
Positive experience: magnificent pool
Negative experience: Look little bit ugly swimming pool not so clean sorry for it
Negative experience: Membership costs have recently gone up as the centre became a “Platinum” one. It used to be £300-£400 for an annual membership that included the whole centre and the spa. It’s now £400pa for the basic membership and £500pa if you want the spa. Most other Everyone Active Westminster centres remain at £300pa. Sadly I can’t identify any improvements flowing from this now being a Platinum centre. The spa was closed for 2 years because of Covid and reopened with great fanfare in mid-2022, having been refurbished. The good news is the two saunas and steam room now work almost all of the time. The bad news is that the floors were re-tiled so poorly water pools everywhere, creating a significant slipping hazard. The solution has been to put down flimsy mats which haven’t resolved the problem. This is a serious accident waiting to happen. The spa also has a strange timetable now, closing at random times on weekdays for “cleaning” and for most of Saturday for no obvious reason. The changing rooms are kept quite clean, which is positive. Sadly some of the lockers are missing hangers in them, which are never replaced despite complaints. The gym showers are either super hot, cold and/or have no water pressure. This has been an ongoing issues for years which no one seems to be able to repair. The dry-side changing rooms also only have one toilet, which is often out of use. Any sort of repair seems to take at least 2-3 weeks, including basic ones like swapping a tap out. The pool used to be split into three wide lanes, which allowed for easy overtaking and minimal pool rage. It’s now split into four very narrow ones, making overtaking impossible… The water is also quite cold so you will be swimming at a pace to keep warm! The gym is in decent shape and, when reported, machines to tend to get fixed reasonably promptly. Sadly no deep cleaning ever takes place and there’s dumbbells missing. There has also been a leak into the membership area near reception for months, again with seemingly no plans to resolve it other than a bucket. Edit 1 April 2023: service and facilities have gone downhill since the centre became a platinum one and started charging more. There has been no soap in any dispensers for two weeks. Today there was no tissue in any male toilet. There has been a discarded bandage on the floor of the steam room for six days now. As the only male cleaner has been away all week, no actual cleaning has taken place for a week. Embarrassing.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities with ample scooter parking close by.
Fantastic experience: Good
Negative experience: If you have children, you should not go there. Drawers for things are not closed. The duty manager is rude and does not give his last name, his name is Ricardas.
Fantastic experience: Hidden gem. A real haven in the madness.
Positive experience: Been at this place for a few months now, it's in a handy location in central soho. They have a reasonable amount of equipment but as with other gyms have only a few sets of starter free weights so you're often waiting around for the set you require. Staff seem pretty friendly compared to the Elephant branch(disinterested) but my main issue is with the changing rooms. Firstly the showers are 'open' so if you're a bit prudish you're out of luck yet paradoxically they have private changing rooms - go figure?? They also have a 'dry' and 'wet' changing but nobody uses the wet so everyone from the pool upstairs uses the gym lockers making the floor wet all the time. Pretty irritating and nobody seems to police it. I only use the gym so far so can't comment on the classes, pool or spa but good to know they have these facilities. Other than that, not bad but I'll keep my options open for the time being.
Negative experience: Researched and tried to register for a free day pass with the understanding that I would be in the area for a week to swim and workout and would pay. Also wanted to check out the “Spa”. Couldn’t register online even with a UK post code. Walked over and was met with one of the rudest desk registrants ever. Horrible young man full of No’s. He said i could only register online for a day pass He finally typed in my information, and when I went to pay said they didn’t take Amex. That’s ok but it was the reason. He said no one takes it in London. Only “big corporations”. Uhm the leisure centre is part of a very large/payment system. Regardless if this is their policy I didn’t need the editorial on the big Corp. After this He did not help at all. I found my own way. No idea where I was going. I guess pointing to the pool was obvious. Fortunately brought my own towel. He argued with the lift man who was there to fix the lift behind me. I was going to check out the Spa. Went down there. No one there. It looked sad. The pool was nice but rusty in places. Assume it’s the age of the facility. It was clean. The guard on duty also couldn’t care less. Wasn’t sure if he was taking to himself or on the phone the whole time. Never made eye contact. The other guests said the same thing about the reception experience at the front. The other members were the most helpful. I’m sure other staff is great but I never encountered anyone else. Very bad experience. Won’t go back. Would not recommend. I get how difficult it is to be in the service industry but get rid of this guy. He’s costing you.
Fantastic experience: Great swimming pool, used this with oyster diving for the part A of a padi open water scuba diving course .
Positive experience: Very wide lanes and not too busy even during the busiest time of the day. The pool itself is also great, all that's missing is a sauna. High and roomy lockers (bring a padlock), though the hairdryers are unconveniently downstairs. Worth a visit.
Positive experience: Hot yoga was great!
Fantastic experience: Nice swimming Pool. There is everything you need: the shower, the hairdryer. The only thing is one has to bring their own locks for the lockers. But everything else is good.
Negative experience: Culture of willful stupidity and bizarre decision making which is spoiling a great facility. Pool and shower water was freezing some months back with a sign up saying boiler was broken for the foreseeable future. I responded to an online feedback form telling them to just turn it back on and stop saving money on gas, then low and behold, the very next day the boiler was working again, the showers were hot. No one in reception seems to be able to sort out queries without asking a colleague, so you get the “us against them” treatment before you know it. Staff training must be somewhat lacking. When you complain to management they are defensive and take the side of their staff and are unwilling and perhaps unable to take onboard the big picture. A simple apology seems too much for them. But there are some cool people working here, and it’s a great facility, so it’s not fair to tar all with the same brush, but all the same, when things go wrong here, they go crazy wrong and it can be very frustrating, as many other reviewers are stating. Fingers crossed for gradual improvements. Need upper management to make more of a boutique customer friendly atmosphere for ALL customers and try harder to avoid the standard jobsworth attitude and small-minded mentality which is unfortunately found in leisure centers and sports clubs across the country. Papering over the cracks by asking the staff to write positive reviews on Google is possibly the wrong way to go about it and in my view wholly unacceptable. What a great facility. Such a great shame the customer service doesn’t match up to it, yet. You can do it guys!
Fantastic experience: Iona on reception was super friendly and welcoming in explaining the various membership options. Looking forward to my next session in a great location!
Fantastic experience: Lady at front desk went out of he way to help me as an out of towner. Great gym setup
Fantastic experience: Staff is just the best! Everyone you encounter is just a pleasure to deal with. If you pick up the best times, not that busy and has this local vibe that makes you live this GYM forever… It will be just a dream came true that they would change the shower taps for the ones you choose how hot you feel like… sometimes it’s scalding hot! You need to play around a little bit, but you’ll find your tricks and the one it’s perfect… still my fav place to detox!
Fantastic experience: The reception lady is fab at her job. Extremely helpful and friendly. We had travelled from afar to do a class and she was lovely. I love the character of this centre and facilities were great. We were doing a fight klub class and Xtreme Hip Hop. You must check it out. Don't think it's on the timetable but you can find out more from the main fightklub website or ring the leisure centre.
Positive experience: Lovely historic public swimming pool. 25m marble stone pool has tons of character. Nice modern spa area downstairs has lovely sauna and steam room with relaxation area
Fantastic experience: I use the yoga studio here and the rest of the facilities look good to me, the changing rooms are decent, its clean, feels safe and welcoming and its a nice building too
Fantastic experience: Those instructors are drill seargenfs
Fantastic experience: Great swim!
Negative experience: The boiler room was not working and all the shower water and pool water wad cold. For The locker i couldn't use 1 pound coin to lock instead needed to bring my own lock which was a little unexpected. It could have been nice if there was a notice about cold water on the app or on the website. T
Fantastic experience: One of my favourite swimming pools.
Positive experience: The gym is not huge but has most of what you need for a decent workout. The good thing is it hasn't been too busy when I went. The spa is quite good and there are separate saunas and steam rooms. The website says which days are for men/women/mixed but on the men's day a few women seemed to walk in so maybe better signage or something to indicate the session might be good. Overall decent place
Negative experience: The worst swimming teacher and management ever. The teacher was so arrogant. I have called them to enquire about the lessons and then they told me to come. First lesson was good as there was some other teacher covering for the actual one. He was really good. I again confirmed from everyone what’s the exact procedure to register. The staff was good and told me that you can come next Thursday and then can register. Here comes Thursday and the actual teacher was there. She started blaming me about something that I mentioned to the reception. I even don’t her name and tried to explain the confusion but she was so arrogant and her attitude was so rude. Posting this as I really wanna learn swimming and was really happy that I got a chance here. But if there are teachers like this who demotivates someone on their first day and blame someone whom they don’t know it just shows how bad the management is.
Fantastic experience: I use this leisure centre for swimming, it was very clean and well looked after. The lanes were not too busy when I went.
Negative experience: The refurbishment of the spa was a complete disappointment. The tube is hotter than the sauna and it was like a disco with multi coloured flashing lights. Then old and tired changing rooms. I will pass.
Fantastic experience: I was impressed and to top it I attended a fabulous box fitness workout Fight Klub. A must try for all, thank me later !!!
Fantastic experience: I've only visited here for the pool, so can't speak for the gym or dry chaning rooms etc. The place has a great location tucked behind Carnaby Street, which is really easy to find and get to. The changing rooms are pretty well-maintained - you have to bring your own padlock which I like, because I don't understand having to use coin-operated lockers in other places. Staff are friendly and helpful. The pool itself is 30m long (which is atypical!), not over-chlorinated, clean, and a perfect temperature for me - slightly on the colder side but not freezing. The floors of the pool are marble, which I like, and the building inside is beautiful! There's a roof which lets in natural daylight, which I like. Only downside is there's only one toilet right inside the wet changing room which is pretty public. I can imagine people might feel embarrassed to unload pre-swim!
Fantastic experience: Great pool Gym is small but well equipped
Positive experience: Really cute pool, bring your own padlock for the lockers.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful quiet public pool, great for a swim in Central London
Fantastic experience: Brilliant new tiling by apex tilers
Positive experience: The gym has a decent machine selection, but you can tell the place is worn. The pool looks nice at first with the marble decor, until your hand crashes into the walls and you find marble isn’t that nice. Also the temperature is a bit cold.
Positive experience: Friendly staff, clean changing areas and the marble pool is really stylish!
Fantastic experience: Amazing swimming pool. Great facilities.
Fantastic experience: AMAZING SERVICE GREAT ATMOSPHERE. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN ADRIAN & TEAM ❤️
Positive experience: Nice and clean pool with the historic cool interior. But the lighting is a bit dark.
Fantastic experience: Wow. What can I say. This pool which is in the middle of the coolest place in the universe, is made out of marble! Actual marble. It's 33 metres long. It is delightfully cool in temperature and is thoughtfully roped off into lanes. I once went to a 50 meter pool near the ski resort of Whistler in an especially stunning part of Western Canada . The pool was perfect, the view was surreally gorgeous. Like from the lanes you looked up and saw Narnia just the other idea of the window. And this pool is better! Like comic store guy in the simpsons says. Best. Pool. Ever.
Fantastic experience: Great
Negative experience: The gym is incredibly dirty, staff /management do not care. The dusts/dirts have stayed there for months, still no one ever clean, they walked around, brushed, just to show. Equipments are in dis-order, staff mostly sat on their mobile, care less about anything. Changing room is filthy, smelly. The only enjoyable experience is the marble pool itself.
Fantastic experience: In Soho one of the most agreable SPA places, you have the cgance to swim a little then a little cardio and a super fancy gym workout with super professionals assisting you at the gym. If you go to shop some at Liberty you must come to the gym floor to have some abs or but toning workout.
Fantastic experience: Came across Marshal Street Spa by chance after dissapointingly turning up at Oasis Covent Garden which was closed and no notice on website or to members. Marshal street Spa is great value and a very nice pool and building plus very helpful staff. I only did a one off swim but will be getting a membership next visit.
Fantastic experience: Great place very central !
Fantastic experience: The pool is superb, classic design, nor used any of the other facilities.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic staff and facilities are super clean. Value for money. We'll worth a visit
Fantastic experience: Simply the best indoor place to swim in London. Friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful marble surroundings. Never too busy. Give it a try.
Fantastic experience: Amazing restored marble swimming pool. Fully accessible facilities and very convenient location. Pool itself would benefit from 5m mark flags for those of us who swim backstroke, but I gather they would affect the overall aesthetic of the place.
