Hillsborough Leisure Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: Very good
Fantastic experience: We've been coming here for several years now for leisure swimming with the kids. They love it. Staff are super friendly in reception, café, and also pool staff. We more recently started coming for coached lessons, and the instructors are amazing. Really recommend it.
Positive experience: Yep, a good lesure centre a few slides and plenty of parking
Negative experience: The leisure pool has gone massively down hill. The water is cold, the showers have no water pressure and are also not very warm. The pool is full of rubbish. I found three bits of random plastic floating in it this visit. Part of the pool is sectioned off as it has a broken pump/light. During leisure sessions the slides aren’t always open.
Fantastic experience: Really good facilities
Negative experience: Absolute terrible experience one of the workers had a go at me for not having a wristband that fell of in the swimming pool and i asked him politely where do i go to get a new one and got kicked out for verbal harassment to staff what an absolute joke i don't recommend going there not even a refund was given
Fantastic experience: My little one does swimming at Hillsborough leisure centre
Fantastic experience: The kids love the swimming pool. Their favourite place to chill.
Negative experience: Very busy and boisterous. Not great for small children under 5. Teenagers na folder children knocking them over and tearing round. Also changing rooms a little dirty, presumably because it's busy.
Fantastic experience: Very good gym and nice pool, just needs a sauna
Fantastic experience: Great place for the family with lots of variety.
Negative experience: Staff at check in are always rude and surly. Also we booked online to take the kids swimming- arrived and were told all the features were not on that day, apart from the baby pirate ship slide, due to maintenance. This needs to be mentioned on the online system at the time of booking. It's generally dirty too
Positive experience: Lane swimming is affordable with the LifeSheffield card and the lane/ teaching pool is OK. But the facilties need attention. The showers were more of a piddle than a shower and the shower floor was slippery. I'm not a fan of the shared gender changing area with cubicles as these are not floor to ceiling.
Positive experience: Ok but no more than that
Positive experience: Ok the Hillsborough leisure centre swimming area is fun and relaxing but you don't really get alot of time for the price you pay which is £9 for 1hour
Positive experience: No photo allowed but this site has slides which are convenient for kids. Better than other sites. I just don't understand why they still have restrictions on time. COVID is far gone and they are still doing 5.50 for kids per hrs. Per hr? Joke.
Fantastic experience: First time in years, reminds me to get swimming again soon.
Positive experience: Sean look pool safety scary Lifeguards
Fantastic experience: Great swimming pool for kids and parents to enjoy together.
Positive experience: Nice leisure centre. Got everything there like, swimming, gym,and different classes. Not overly packed either.
Positive experience: Needs an update. Not really worth the money they charge. Costs me and 1 child £20 for an hour
Fantastic experience: an amazing experience here loved it with children me and Debbie had a great time at the gym highly recommend x
Negative experience: £14.50 for an hour adult+child. Would be ok if I wasn’t charged twice. Noticed by chance on my bank statement, had to ring to get a refund. Interesting that there was no ‘sorry for the inconvenience, nothing’ - just ‘refund will take 4-5 working days’. Had I not noticed the double charge, they would happily keep it , by the looks of it
Positive experience: I would like to add some photos, but you are not allowed to take photos inside
Positive experience: A nice family leisure centre for any age group, safe, standby rescue team, and well managed booking times.
Positive experience: Went to martial arts for my little boy. Lovely atmosphere, nice classes, really good
Negative experience: Today I have arrived on time for my badminton game. The court was not set up and members of staff were nonchalant to help. I had to go to the reception to ask twice. I expect the court to be ready at the time it was paid for. Because I won't be given extra time should the next game arrive. When eventually staff arrived to set up the net 15 minutes late not as much as an apology was rendered. They avoided even speaking to us. train your staff better
Positive experience: It's OK but there is a severe lack of family changing spaces.
Fantastic experience: Really good swimming pool where you can relax and have fun in the deep end while the kids are playing / swimming in the shallow bit
Negative experience: Too many unnecessary pieces of equipment and not nearly enough squat/power-racks and bench presses. I am always having to wait up to half an hour for these peices of equipment. Will not be staying when contract ends.
Positive experience: I like it i get up early and go my friend Chris who is always late complains it's too busy get up early you big girl
Positive experience: My daughter loved it here pool was nice and warm plenty to keep her occupied.
Fantastic experience: Very nice, although a bit crowded pool. Water is warm and pleasant to be in.
Positive experience: I absolutely love it with my two kids aged between 8 and 13. We always have fun there. I only drop it to 4 stars because the wave machine isn't as good as it was. But the pool is still fantastic.
Positive experience: It was OK done think there Enough parking.and Litter needs picking up,in the car park?
Positive experience: Lovely time in the pool with my grandchildren. A huge thank you to Jess for her kindness and patience, recognising instantly that my grandson has special needs and supplying him with ear defenders and helping keep him safe during a melt down. What a fabulous young lady and a credit to staff.
Positive experience: Good size pool. My son went for a birthday party and enjoyed it.
Fantastic experience: It really a good and nice place to workout. The only one thing I would recommend is to get lat pull down machine. It is not here, rest all good. And for back excercise I always visit somewhere else. Maybe this Christmas we can get this machine. Fingers crossed.
Positive experience: Great place I go to the gym there, really annoying how so many gym users just sit on the machines on their phones doing nothing, the gym could do with clamping down on it
Positive experience: Clean tidy and well run plenty of facilities for all ages
Negative experience: Staff (mainly manager) would rather leave a 2 year old screaming, crying and cold rather than allow them in the toddler pool without arm bands even though we had already been in there for 45 mins with no problem or comment. I'm happy to follow policy I was simply un aware of the rule (and so were most of the lifeguards apparently since they were watching and talking to us prior) but simply allowing a toddler to wait in the water (and not blowing a whilste at me constantly) while her dad ran to the reception to buy arm bands I hoped would just be common courtesy, unfortunately not.
Fantastic experience: The Muslim female member of staff that was working today is beyond commendable. She was really helpful. I didn't catch her name. But well done to her. This is a great service at this venue, unlike the customer service I have received at other SIV venues. This is now where I will come for my swimming classes.
Fantastic experience: Family pool a bit cold but soon get used to it. A lot of parking, changing rooms are in good condition
Fantastic experience: A well equipped local leisure centre, part of Sheffield City Trust. Had a great time today at the Leisure Swim session. Look forward to a return visit.
Fantastic experience: Best thing I ever did joining here love it all very obliging in all aspects
Fantastic experience: Lovely example of leisure centre. Love swimming here and it's affordable and great for kids. Plenty of parking spaces too.
Fantastic experience: They have done some work painting and updating. Looks a lot fresher since our last visit. Kids love the slides
Fantastic experience: Signed up for Cardio Rehab and can't fault the staff. Well on the way to recovery now
Positive experience: Good gym with plenty of equipment, but its a shame they are not looking to reopen the sauna and steam room. Limited opening hours at the weekend when they close at 4pm. Never too busy.
Positive experience: First time going as a member 05/10/23 17.15pm the girl on reception was very helpful.
Fantastic experience: Great place to go for affordable fun in the pool, complete with 2 slides and a wave machine!
Positive experience: Good gym and nice pool pity no steam room or sauna yet
Fantastic experience: Big shout out to one of your staff Bradley for great customer service. Just become a new member and he couldn’t do enough to help me sort things out thank you
Positive experience: It would be fantastic if the considered Leisure Center contains Sauna and Jacuzzi
Positive experience: Recently been refurbished but they haven't done anything with showers, and half of them don't work properly. Also looks like the old tiling around the aqua pool could do with new grouting.
Positive experience: Here with my sons squad for training alterations, staff have been brilliant accommodating them and really friendly at reception
Positive experience: We enjoyed our time here swimming. Clean and spacious pool area with a wave machine and a couple of slides. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves
Positive experience: The new staff seem to be more pleasant the new girl on reception is always smiling and helpful named Zoe B I think she said and the new lifeguards seem to be cheerful and talkative now. A few more managers with smiles also Pool has had a refurb so more cleaner and the food is nice been a member for quite a few years now just need the saunas back and then 5star
Fantastic experience: A very nice family leasure swimming pool. It looks and feel much better / refreshed after months of maintainence and refurbishment works. It was worth to wait.
Negative experience: 1 star, as can't give ZERO. Don't waste your time, utterly awful. I don't mind spending money on a day out but this was £12.50 for 37mins before gave up, got dried and left. A massive overhaul to create more space to sell over priced drinks and food, if I wanted that I'd go to one of the many food and drink establishments within a stones throw. The pirate ship had 2 water cannons, 1 worked, other kicked out less pressure than someone with prostate issues. The pool was barriered off after 1st 10 metres or so and could only cross if a full swimmer, despite the fact that most 5 years olds including mine could still comfortably walk at that point. Therefore no opportunity to try and SWIM at at leisure SWIM session. Flumes had no speed to them making them uncomfortable and dull. Rubbish was being swept into the showering area by staff, probably from the cafe but also plasters too, Gross. Then to cap it off, the cubicles are built for the borrower's. Do your self a favour and look at metrodome or donny dome, slightly more expensive but can easily spend a decent bit of time there and get dried without needing to contort into positions I never knew possible
Negative experience: Haven’t even been yet and it’s a nightmare. Trying to book it is difficult and we accidentally chose the wrong day, now no one answered are emails or phone calls about asking to cancel or change are booking. So waste of time and money!
Positive experience: The Hillsborough Leisure centre leisure pool was recently closed for quite a while for refurbishment. We have been there for the first time after reopening and albeit it does not look like that much changed, it looks like it had a good clean and a bit of a revamp with some new paint jobs and some new water features in the children's area. The leisure pool has a deep area with a couple of lines for swimmers and a deeper area for good swimmers who still want to have some fun with the wave machine generally operating at least once an hour. There is a shallow area for less able swimmers with a pirate boat with slide and a baby area with play features. There are two big slides. One quite fast fine slide and one slow comfortable wide slide. There are some waterfall features, water buckets and splash features. The water temperature is good and there are ample changing rooms and lockers. Be sure to have a pound ready to use in your locker. This is returnable. There are hair dryers and for parents with bigger children who are going in on their own, there is a cafe serving a good variety of snacks and drinks where they can still be supervised from. Overall a very decent pool with good features. We do like coming here. Recent refit made it even more desirable.
Fantastic experience: I absolutely love Hillsborough Leisure Centre! I do fitness classes and use the gym. The gym is well equipped and always clean and tidy. There is a great range and number of different classes to choose from. The instructors are all genuinely lovely and I always feel welcomed and supported by them. The whole place just has a really nice, relaxed, inclusive and friendly vibe. So much nicer than other gyms that can feel intimidating! I would highly recommend it.
Positive experience: I use the gym here sometimes and it's a nice gym set up they have. The other members are friendly and nice to talk to. Will be bringing my daughter here for the swimming once it's back open as work is being done
Fantastic experience: The gym has an excellent variety and large amount of equipment for use. There is bike parking in sight of the reception staff that is also monitored with CCTV cameras.
Positive experience: I can't swim and I hate water and other people's kids BUT my 1yr old enjoyed it so I guess it's good? Oh don't bother goin on the blue slide...you don't slide you just crab walk to the bottom. Also you need to book if you want to go so don't just turn up wi ya shorts on.
Negative experience: Horrible experience started shouting and swearing at 6year qnd 5year olds a person called shawn came up to me and swearing at me and my family.when we was coming out one of 5he workers tried grabbing my autistic cousin and I told her to stop and she was ragging him around even though I said stop I eventually got him and they was watching out every move and when we went near the water to get out they continued to try and get in our face
Negative experience: I was there for the first time and the space to change clothes doesn't impress with cleanliness! You have to push to find any small cabinet to leave things, there is no family changing room, you have to cram with your child in a small changing room. No towel racks, everyone goes barefoot! I don't know if people in the 21st century have heard of foot fungus! The floors are filthy dirty in the changing room, no bins in the area for throwing away baby diapers! The kids liked the pirate ship, the slides were fine. The water in the pool for babies is too cold! It got too crowded because people don't keep to the time according to the color of the exit from the pool. Rubbish was all over the floor! Finally, not a single hair dryer worked! This place is only bent on taking your money, it should be upgraded!
Negative experience: Its ok. Good waves, great swimming lessons, space to swim. Slide disappointing, great kiddy pirate ship. I find it really depressing that there is a cafe for paying customers right at the waterside, but parents are not allowed to sit there to watch swimming lessons and pick their kids up after them. They are supposed to sit upstairs, miles away, abd traipse down to the kids between lessons - really stressful every week for parents supervising lessons and pooltime for multiple children. If youre wondering why loads of parents use the cafe seats, ir buying bare .inimum orders from the cafe, that's the reason. Oh, wonderful staff too. But thats just a stupid, unhelpful policy. Why is the cafe food so beige?
Negative experience: Constantly increasing prices, while constantly decreasing services provided. Equipment and facilities always out of order and no level of cleanliness maintained. They seem content with grabbing as much money from members as possible but providing nothing for it. Getting worse and worse by the day, now removing steam and sauna, half the reason many joined. Starting to feel like robbery to be honest.
Positive experience: Looking a bit tired and dated now. The pool temperature is not the warmest but I've been in a lot colder. Kids like the pirate ship though ⚓
Positive experience: Medioca visit, staff friendly. Blue slide needs someone at the top controlling people. And how many can ride at once. Other than this it's OK visit
Negative experience: I visited Hillsborough Leisure Centre for the first time tonight for an Aqua Aerobics class. The class itself was good - the instructor was energetic and the exercises was fine. The instructor started by commenting that we were at capacity tonight and that the pool was indeed crowded. The volume of the instructors microphone was painfully loud, as was the volume of the music. When I asked her to turn it down slightly she said that the volume was different for different song and that she would keep it up but that I could move further back (I would have if it wasn't "at capacity" and therefore nowhere really to move to). The volume did stay the same throughout which made the class quite difficult to focus on. I usually exercise with a friend that has tinnitus and there is no way she would have been able to stay for the class. The swimming pool area at the Leisure Centre is overall quite grim. You walk in to the pool area with your outdoor shoes to get to the changing area. The toilets were flooded and dirty and the shower area is joint for women and men and with a non-existing water pressure. They have private changing cubes but they were wet all over on the benches and the floor so hard to change back without getting the clothes wet. I instead used the women's communal changing area which also had baby changing tables in them - probably appreciated by the parents but unfortunately made the whole room smell of dirty diapers. On my way out I noticed the vendor machines full of sugary soft drinks, crisps, and candy as well as two huge M&M machines. This is really the last thing our society needs at the communal swimming pool. Why not use the opportunity to introduce some healthy options instead, it is a place for keeping fit after all. I will look elsewhere for my Aqua classes in the future and I hope to see the instructor at another venue as she was the only good thing about this experience.
Fantastic experience: Best pool experience in Sheffield for my daughter due to the pirate ship & waves but she's been also going to gymnastics classes there. The staff have always been amazing (friendly but also firm & professional). It's not our local centre but definitely our favourite one.
Fantastic experience: Never had a bad time there always friendly staff and me and the kids love the slides
Negative experience: Swimming area is filthy. Especially the changing rooms, which smell like a toilet and obviously need to be cleaned more often. The kids don't seem to care and still had a good time though. Needs a major upgrade.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place to go or to take your kids swimming. Staff are very helpful and are willing to help with any problems you have. Lovely and friendly staff, lovely place 2 go .
Fantastic experience: This pool is fantastic for lane swimming. It's cheap (£5 via the app) and not busy (i.e 2-3 people per lane) compared to the ones I go to in Manchester. 2 hours free parking as well.
Fantastic experience: Amazing pool, advise booking in advance as can get busy. Cafe on site, can get cheap tickets with the membership card they do online for £1.
Positive experience: Good pool for kids. Friendly staff, two big slides, waves. Some people were doing g lengths too, but not really the place to go for a swim!
Fantastic experience: If you have little humans then this pool is a must. From the infant pool to the pirate ship, the long blue flume that is suitable for most ages to racing down the black flume for the slightly bigger little people or grown-ups wanting to beat their best time.
Positive experience: Great place to take the kids my daughter loves the slides and the staff are great cafe inside the pool area so parents can sit down while the kids are in the pool
Fantastic experience: Went to watch my grandson in his gymnastics preschool class. My grandson is very happy to be part of the gym class and then he also attends the trampoline class later in the day. He absolutely beams when he has finished his session. The gentle discipline of the class is perfect for him. The preschool classes are geared just right for this age group. Very impressed with the centre. Excellent facilities and parking. Well staffed and very clean. Fantastic to see a well run and obviously great venue.
Fantastic experience: First time visiting today with our 17 month old, the changing rooms are very clean the showers are clean. The pool is great for all ages the baby and toddler pool was lovely our little girl had a great time. My only criticism would be that there could be more large family changing rooms with more baby changing facilities (the changing table) overall a very enjoyable experience and we will all be coming again. We didn't get chance to use the café as our little girl was tired.
Fantastic experience: A great gym, with brilliant classes. I've always found the staff to be really helpful and the self check in machine is great to cut queues.
Positive experience: I have been to this leisure centre many times, since I was a young girl myself. We went last week to the baby session which was great, however the floors are really quite dirty to say that it was 10am. I would rate a lot higher if the cleanliness could be a little better. I want to support sheffield business, just a shame this let it down a little. We will be back ( just with flip flops!
Positive experience: This is a good option for lower cost health and fitness options. The gym is a good size and offers a variety of workout equipment. I mainly come here for the lane swimming and book through the app. The membership for both of these activities with multiple locations is about £30 a month. Golf is an optional addition for a higher monthly membership fee. Overall this place offers reasonable facilities for fair price.
Negative experience: ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING Drove 20 miles to take my pre-schoolers to the toddler swimming. Arrived to be told fully booked, come back in 90 minutes-okay I can accept that they are clearly still taking covid restrictions more seriously than necessary, so proceeded to book on advance for swimming. I was then informed that I had to purchase flotation aids for my children (at their exuberant prices) or they could not go in.... myself and my partner were both there so this was on ONE TO ONE SUPERVISION!!!! My children have never used flotation aids (they actually give children a false sense of security and make it harder for them to learn to swim) and I am not holding them back simply to line the greedy pockets of this clearly underfunded leisure centre. Barnsley metrodome (a much bigger and therefore higher risk facility) do not have this ridiculous rule.... Good try and making an extra twenty quid sheffield council.
Negative experience: I paid for x4 sessions with a personal trainer from their website , they didn’t allow me to go to the gym and the personal trainer kept delaying our sessions and it took almost two months to get one session done. Then when I asked for a refund for the remaining x3 sessions, they refunded for only two sessions !! Very disappointed !!
Positive experience: Mainly used the gym here and a few swims but I do like it. Gym is nice, broken up into areas like rooms so you don't feel like everyone is watching you unlike some. Swimming is good too, I'm not a strong swimmer and it'd be nice for an early doors session in the fun pool without kids. Member changing rooms are generally good although Ponds Forge has better showers and the men's toilet in there really needs a proper clean and disinfect to get rid of the smell. Also not enough parking although when you can park it's right outside the door. Recommended though!
Positive experience: A good leisure centre with 2 pools, for swimming the other includes slides and has a shallow shelf entrance ideal for people with young children.
Negative experience: Been a member of siv over 5 years mainly used Hillsborough, always paid an annual fee upfront, and been given a discount for doing so. The standards of the gym have really gone down hill ! The cleanliness of Hillsboro is not very good at all the water in the showers are always really cold. Meany of times we have gone to use the showers but decided against it due to the smell! We have always continued to use this gym as the classes are really good ( but they are made good by the independent instructors) not siv, instructors seem to be at constant battle with siv staff to maintain the expectations of the people attending their classes, Today i have gone to the gym my band was blocked I’ve gone to enquire they have told me my annual membership had ran out. I was shocked at this as for the last 5 years i have received a phone call prior to the end of my contract to review. I have called up to renew to be told it is going to be 100 pounds more then i have paid last year!!!! I ask if we don’t get a discount for loyalty as we have done for the past 5 years? to be told “you don’t get anything for loyalty that’s life” shocked and hurt by this we have no choice but to find another gym as I simply cannot justify paying an extra 100 pounds for a venue that standard are continuing to slip!
Fantastic experience: Great sludes and easy access for wheelchair uses. Cafe is at poolside and has a hoilday feel to it.
Positive experience: For me, not as good as ponds forge. Too small and cramped. Not enough changing rooms and not clean. Staff were good.
Negative experience: I'm very disappointed. I don't like the rock music, country music, love songs, it's not good in a gym. The swimming pool is very dirty, its changing place smells like urine and dirty. I don't recommend.
Positive experience: Really recommend reading the small print before booking here! We booked for 2 adults and 3 children and hadn't seen the small print that said one adult per child and drove an hour to get there! Had to put my foot down to get a voucher so we could come back instead of just wasting our money. Came back with just 2 of the children, the water was very cold and my son's lips were blue throughout our time there even in the baby pool, only one slide open too. Staff were friendly enough though and the waves were very fun!
Fantastic experience: Good gym very clean and modern with all the equipment you need only down side is its some times a little busy and have to wait for equipment but this is just due to the numbers that go to the gym.
Positive experience: My daughter loved swimming here, managed to get a space night before after searching various other swimming venues. Has a wave machine which I didn't much rate and two slides which were good. Has a small seating area pool side for the cafe but not many tables for capacity, brought my mum to spectate and she had to pull a chair with no table so she wasn't able to buy anything which she would have otherwise. Parking is 2hrs max, any longer and you'll be charged by the parking company... lucky swimming sessions are only an hour, if you wish to book a double session then I guess you'll face a parking charge if you've brought your car. Although my daughter enjoyed it somewhat I doubt we will be returning as the cons outweigh the pros to be honest.
Negative experience: It looks much better in the photos. The wave machine wasn't on, the larger of the two slides would work better with rings and it seemed a bit worn out.
Fantastic experience: A lovely swimming Lesuire centre it has two areas one lane swimming the other a large open Lesuire pool it has a lovely pirate ship for kids to climb and water play. It has a little pool with min slide for toddlers babies. It has two great slides. Wave machine water. It has a large curved area that you can sit on in the baths. A lovely cafe over looks the baths so you can see your family swim and join you. The atmosphere is always great it has high ceilings that make it quiet and the full side of glass windows let's in the light and sun. The facilities are clean and compact but all unisex and open plan is great prices also
