Our comment from FitFit UK about Wigan Life Centre:
The Wigan Life Centre offers a variety of facilities and activities aimed at promoting health and wellness within the community. Many visitors have praised the helpful and friendly staff, who contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. The centre features clean and well-maintained swimming pools that many families enjoy using. Additionally, the gym is highlighted for its modern equipment and diverse classes, making it a solid choice for fitness enthusiasts.
While there are commendable aspects, some users have expressed concerns regarding cleanliness in the changing rooms and communication issues with staff. Complaints about the timeliness of lessons and the difficulty of reaching reception by phone have emerged, which have affected the overall experience for some visitors. Additionally, it has been noted that parking can be inconvenient, being chargeable at some sites.
Overall, the Wigan Life Centre has the potential to be a great choice for those looking to exercise or enjoy recreational activities, provided that some of these service areas are improved.
Wigan Life Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: Getting a blue badge , the lady who attended to us was very efficient and courteous
Negative experience: Please do not sign up to the Gym membership.. Dirty facilities, changing rooms and gyms are filthy and outdated. The equipment in the gyms and changing rooms never work or always out of order. Gyms are just hang out areas for young teenagers, then when you try to cancel the Council will continue to take payments. The only positive was you could use various sites, Howe Bridge was the most modern and most clean at a push! Car parks are chargeable at some sites which is a joke, passes can be obtained from reception (if in stock) for near by car parks - Not the nearest though. Never answer the phone, reception desk never staffed.. run by kids.. I would advise to look elsewhere if setting out on a serious fitness journey.
Negative experience: Following my son's birthday party at the weekend, I have to tell you how disappointed I am. We were completely ignored by staff, not given any instructions or directions which lead the children having less time in the pool than 1 hour. I approached a few staff members with questions and concerns just to be told it was nothing to do with them. I was also told by many parents that they were completely ignored and ended up late to the party. It made the whole afternoon highly disappointing to everyone involved, especially my son. We are all very unhappy with the lack of communication from staff and it's put an awful lot of us off from ever using your services again. I hope improvements can be made for the future..... Negative experience: Turd standard council committee management. Staff are a health hazard. New check in system excellent example of wise council spending.
Negative experience: My son and grandson came today they enjoyed the swimming but nearly £20 for pair of goggles is ridiculous. How can you get away with charging so much. We went to a haven camp 4 weeks ago and these were only £8. Totally wrong this
Negative experience: Never answer.phone at life centre reception for swim pool
Negative experience: Shocking no time for kids swim all lessons an lane swimming
Negative experience: Been 4 time spent £12 on parking and the pools full tryed ringing each time of visiting no one answers get there and there's 2 people behind the desk
Negative experience: Poor structure for swimming lessons. Son joined stage 3, passed in a couple of week and moved up to stage 4 - passed in around 5 month then moved up to stage 5. Experience in stage 5 was completely different to 3 and 4, instructor Jenny didn't introduce herself so my son had no idea what her name was. She spent the majority of the lesson stood with her hands on her hips looking like she couldn't be bothered while talking to her colleagues leaving the children stood in the pool awaiting instruction (this happened on every single lesson) Concerns where raised and brushed under the carpet. The way the lessons are set up means that when someone new moves up they do the same old things that they did weeks ago. My son was not assessed on the things he needed to pass for nearly 2 month. I raised this and he was finally assessed, the week after his % went down - apparently a miss press by the instructor. Unfortunately by this point (7 month in stage 5) my son had grown bored of the lessons (theres only so many times they can do dolphin legs…though this done every week) which is a shame as he was enthusiastic about it when he 1st started. On cancelling the membership I voiced concerns about the instructor and the fact that the lessons aren't fit for purpose, no one contacted me to discuss further - shows that this place only care about taking your money…zero customer service. Lastly the place is disgusting, changing room floors are filthy, toilets are always blocked/flushers don't work and the drink machine is always broke. Do not recommend this place.
Fantastic experience: Staff very friendly and helpful
Positive experience: Unusual experience smallish but worth a visit
Fantastic experience: very good went and got a 12 month membership
Negative experience: Not alot of diverse machines and wish they opened 30min earlier
Fantastic experience: Good library
Negative experience: I dont know who answered my call on the front desk today20/05/24 at 12.43 but her attitude stinks basically. Not a good first impression. Why people go in to working with the public with not an ounce of customer care is beyond me. Absolute Karen.
Fantastic experience: Staff are helpful ,kind, polite and respectful Ready to help you Highly recommended
Positive experience: Good.
Fantastic experience: Easy access to the Ground floor
Positive experience: Always friendly staff great place for a swim ♂️
Fantastic experience: Great staff, very friendly. Really easy to book online - if you're planning on swimming, you may need to book it a few days in advance if you're wanting to go after 5pm
Positive experience: Awesome pool which generally enables lane swimming. Shame parking is paid
Negative experience: I’ve just cancelled my membership with this gym. It’s always full of disrespectful and spiteful school children who use the machines for seats and filming people working out. I was in the toilet when one of them shouted “who’s tricking! Ha ha” whilst I was taking a piss… Even your privacy is threatened here by minors who need to learn basic manners. It’s overran by a younger demographic who lack self awareness. After the incident in the toilet, I will be changing to a more adult friendly gym. This isn’t a gym for professionals so watch out.
Fantastic experience: Nice swimming place. With good facilities. Need to see the time table before going there. Check this site before visiting https://www.wigan.gov.uk/BeWell/Leisure-centres/Wigan.aspx It gives live status of swimming pool n visit centre.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review
Negative experience: Been off work on the school holidays and not once as the small pool been open apart from 7pm to 8 pm the time my 6 year old is ready for bed. Not opens much if any Saturdays so got ready to leave on Sunday having checked it’s open 9 to 1:45 , only to check again just before we get the 10:15 bus to find they have just changed it to 10 am to 11 am the large pool is too cold so that’s not an option. How are children meant to learn to swim ??? And nobody answers the phone
Fantastic experience: Good facilities clean and value for money
Positive experience: I've been a few times now and the staff so far have been very helpful and polite, especially the blonde girl behind the desk (her name might be Rachel) she has excellent customer service skills. The changing rooms are clean and warm. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because of the size of the pool where adults can swim. You can only swim in one half of the pool as schools are regularly in the other half. However when they've got out the full pool is still not available to swim in. One day I was in it was ridiculous as instead of swimming lengths I was doing zig zags because of the large number of people crammed into one half of the pool.
Fantastic experience: Nice and comfortable place. Very good environment for study. Computers available for public use and staff is very friendly and cooperative.
Negative experience: Pretty dirty, chewing gum on the floor, plasters/dirt in the steam room and changing rooms, the gym has fairly limited space and equipment but is pretty new I won't be renewing my membership raised this with management who told me they aren't allowed more appropriate chemicals and the steam/sauna gets deep cleaned once weekly.
Fantastic experience: Fab gym, sauna, steam room. Good staff
Positive experience: It's well maintained and has plenty provision for the community. I do wish they had more swimming sessions for families and kids. The gym is well equipped and the instructor and very friendly. I've had a birthday party at the pool too and it was a hit.
Thank you for this great review :)
Fantastic experience: This is a nice design statue.
Positive experience: Bit of a pain to park. It's all on street and card payments only. Building and service were great
Fantastic experience: I work in the building upstairs so I am always passing through to use the gym, pool or spin studio. Great staff. Pleasant atmosphere and clean. The showers need a bit of attention with regards to the water flow being sporadic.
Thank you Fay! Which showers are you referring to so we can report them to be looked at
Positive experience: They was really helpful and the ppl who works there they was very nice
Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Staff always helpful and friendly.
Negative experience: Here for a swimming gala. Brought our own water but it’s soooo hot it was gone within an hour. Vending machine not working. I asked for some water at reception but told no. How can a COUNCIL leisure centre not have a water machine available? I have a bottle? Why is there no facility in the whole of this modern building to get access to drinking water? Gobsmaked.
Fantastic experience: Love the Aqua aerobics class. Jayne really pushes you, which I love, and I can feel that it's helping to strengthen my body. I also love jaynes Pilates' class afterwards, and the steam room and sauna are also good to use
Thank you Rachel!
Positive experience: Staff are always friendly and the place is clean. Just needs more changing rooms at the small pool
Positive experience: Fabulous building, modern with lots of facilities.
Negative experience: freezing. Scrimping on pool heat by the building owner means this not pleasant to swim in.
Hi Lyndsey, thank you for your review. Leisure pool temperatures are to be operated between 27 and 29 degrees in line with PWTAG guidelines. Our pool temperatures are checked every 3-4 hours alongside our pool tests and looking at this weeks records the pool temperature has been between 28-29 degrees which is within the correct parameters.
Negative experience: Don't bother ringing them no one answers the phone, then you turn up and it's full. Shambles
Fantastic experience: Taken out a joint membership so far were impressed with the service and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff, very helpful
Fantastic experience: Reasonable price to go with the family swimming.
Negative experience: You failed to pick up the phone multiple times over a course of 3 weeks. Im not wasting money to travel to you, just to ask you a question. Absolutely ridiculous. I am cancelling my contract and going elsewhere.
Hi Karolina, I apologise you've not been able to get through to us. If you could please email your enquiry to [email protected] and we'll be happy to help
Fantastic experience: Very professional staff ,very helpful from the reception desk on arrival to our interview with the staff
Thank you John!
Positive experience: Brilliant sauna and steam rooms
Thank you!
Positive experience: Staff are brilliant, the facilities are shocking showers broken one week drains stick occasionally for new building its disappointing
Hi Jak, thank you for taking the time to write this review, please can you inform which showers are not working
Fantastic experience: You guys are really the best Well done and keep up the great job.
Negative experience: Horrible! I can’t rate the facility as I can never get in!!! 4th time now trying to come and either they tell me I’m too late, or it’s full or any other reason! 4th time I have to take my daughter home disappointed! Every time I tried to call in advance they never answer the phone. At the desk I told this to the receptionist and they said they are busy however any time I’m there they are just chatting to each other! They showed no compassion or understanding at all! Very disappointing!
Negative experience: Couldn't get the help we needed
Hi Ellen, please could you give us a bit more detail
Positive experience: The centre has lots going on, the staff are always very helpful. Sometimes it is a bit difficult to get through on the phone.
Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Family outing fun day and party time excellent venue
Thank you!
Positive experience: Great place and helpfull staff
Fantastic experience: Good place to swim and keep fit at the gym
Thank you!
Negative experience: The collection of all of the centres owned by wigan council are NOT disability friendly. Having experienced on numerous occasions discrimination by staff, due to having an invisible disability; and the staff and managers are unaware of the sunflower lanyard scheme, which identifies those with invisible disabilities; and is a global scheme. I am just fed up of being disregarded and disrespected by those who are too ignorant to comprehend that individuals can be young and disabled!
Hi Lucy, thank you for taking the time to write your feedback and I'm sorry you have not had a positive experience at our leisure centres. If you could please email [email protected] with as much information as possible so this can be investigated.
Fantastic experience: I had my first swimming lesson last week and I would really recommend using this facility for swimming. The price of the lesson was quite cheap compared to other places offering swimming lessons The registering for lessons and activities is Bias towards full membership members but that's the only fault with this facility
Thank you for this review Ben
Fantastic experience: Nice clean pool. Good size and well staffed. Changing rooms good.
Thank you!
Positive experience: Ok. Nice and friendly with good facilities
Thank you Amanda
Positive experience: Simply divine darlings! Lovely sheen over the banisters. Good to see where all the council tax money goes, you can see it clearly. Now! If only some of that sheen found its way to Leigh. A man can hope.
Thank you Mark
Fantastic experience: Very well equipped and staffed facilities.
Thank you Antony
Fantastic experience: Very nice helpful people A credit to wigan
Negative experience: Don't know why this place even has a phone number to call. Been trying to call since Friday morning to enquire about membership and to join. The fact noone has answered the phone now for 5 days has completely put me off joining. Enquiring else where now, if I can't even get though to join then what dose that tell of the level of service you would receive if you did join.
Positive experience: Lovely swimming pool and wigan life centre team members. Very friendly staff at reception and at the pool. Neat and clean changing areas and showers. The only problem is lack of parking, otherwise I'd be going more often.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly tbh, my son and I always use this venue for swimming
Fantastic experience: Wigan Life Centre pool has given me my confidence back after a knee replacement. The staff are always helpful and welcoming and the cubicles and pool area is kept clean and tidy. Mrs Elsden
Positive experience: It is actually Believe Square where this statue of the great Billy Boston is. The second picture shows a turnstile badge from the old Central Park.
Positive experience: Please put some music on. Chorley baths manage to do it.
Fantastic experience: Really good pool, I used to swim at Queen's Park in St.Helens but they charging over 5 quid for a swim now. Will go here instead in future.
Positive experience: Probably the only good thing Wigan Council have done and done properly. I won't comment on the other shambles they have wasted our money on
Fantastic experience: Cracking gym and pool...gym let down at times with groups of under 18s messing about like there in a youth club...which when you've worked all day and just want to train can be very annoying.
Fantastic experience: the staff are very polite and friendly.
Fantastic experience: Great facility. small pool is warm and a good depth for non swimmers. changing stalls are a decent size
Positive experience: Lovely and clean , helpfully staff. Great aqua class on a Thursday.
Fantastic experience: Just what you need for a little play with the kids or just a swim on your own in the lanes its clean and plenty of changing cubicles. I love it and the kids love it. the gym looks decent aswell I would say more fitness but still a good section for weights im gonna join today after the staff showed me round
Positive experience: It's ok a bit cold though
Positive experience: Took my daughter swimming. The chamging rooms are a maze! But still a great trip.
Positive experience: Clean and not too crowded. Returned 3 times in one week.
Positive experience: Take the kids for swimming lessons, very good facility but stupidly hot upstairs in the viewing gallery!
Fantastic experience: The swimming and leisure centre is great, my children loved it, and it’s kid friendly. Definitely back again!
Fantastic experience: I have used Wigan life centre since it reopened and I enjoy going a few times a week. Gym,swimming all different classes and nice friendly staff.
Positive experience: Great facilities. Bit disjointed with pool being separated from sauna. All staff amazing apart from the 2 old women on reception.
Fantastic experience: First time taking my 18mth old swimming and I was nervous! No need, simple to find your way around, friendly staff, clean. Not to busy , I will be a regular.
Positive experience: Nice little place. Child pool never seems to be open to the public though
Positive experience: Changing rooms pretty cold compared to other swimming baths I've been too, always a bit shivery once you get out. Small pool is great for 3/4 years old and up and warmer than the big pool
Fantastic experience: Being relatively new to the area, it was great to find that we have excellent swim facilities, very modern, well maintained and very clean.
Thank you Christine
Fantastic experience: This leisure centre is amazing! It is very clean and the floor is dry in the changing rooms. Would definitely come again, :)
Fantastic experience: Aqua ..I loved it can't wait to do it again x
Positive experience: Love to go swimming at wigan water usually nice and warm but too cold when there is a gala on. Very nice staff always with a smile and a wave.
Negative experience: Terrible for students. Offer no vacation or week passes. Charges £7.40 for a gym session. Ridiculous. Mardy receptionist too
Positive experience: Modern equipment and plenty of it. It’s a bit of a fuss to get into the gym and to use the actual machines by using your key or card. It gets busy after usual office hours but otherwise it seems ok. Choice of classes available to book. Cleanliness and safety are good too.
Fantastic experience: I'm so glad Wigan life centre offer evening, adult swimming lessons, I've found it quite difficult to find evening lessons in the borough.
Positive experience: Place nicely upkept, lifeguards vigilant. Overall good experience
Fantastic experience: Fun family sports place. Lovely pool
Positive experience: Good facilities for the swimming side of things everything is in good working order. However the changing rooms stink of wee every time I go. Suggest more regular bleach cleaning maybe?
Fantastic experience: Great place clean and friendley staff and swimmers x
Fantastic experience: Well organised Lane swimming and extremely clean
Fantastic experience: Belting little pool, staff friendly and place well kept.
Fantastic experience: A wonderful and welcoming establishment that's ultra clean with extremely friendly competent staff and first class facilities!
Negative experience: Poorly run. Timetables for swimming etc are completely wrong and constantly messed around when I visit with my child, waiting around for hours. Seems to be run by teenagers who in my opinion don't have a clue what they are doing. Won't be visiting anytime soon and will use the other pools in the area as so much easier to do so. I wouldn't even give it 1 STAR
