David Lloyd Reading

Positive experience: I used to belong to David Lloyd Reading, taking a break back when I needed to be cautious in the days we were learning about COVID and then joined classes at a local Leisure Centre. However, due to a knee replacement I can’t do one of the classes and knew the David Lloyd Gym would be better for me. When I joined I was advised to have my introductory session in the gym with Stephen Barratt and great advice that was. I am now considering having on going sessions with Stephen as he clearly understands what I need, the level I can work at and is a good listener. Additionally I am doing Aqua Aerobics and hope to get back to swimming which I haven’t done since leaving David Lloyd. The star rating I have given is for the club - it’s too early to fully rate the club as I only joined early December.

Positive experience: Good gym and health club that is never too busy and has friendly and helpful staff. In comparison to other David Lloyds I have been to/used it is beginning to show it's ages.

Fantastic experience: Been a member here for about 4 years now and I really enjoy my visits to the club. The staff go above and beyond to be helpful and friendly and make me feel welcome. I'd like to give a shout out to Steve, who is a great asset to the David Lloyd, Reading team; he is always willing to help with any questions, he's full of energy and motivation in classes and hes also a great laugh whilst remaining professional and hard working within the club. Overall a great gym environment and a place where I am happy to go alone or with friends/family to work out and feel comfortable.

Negative experience: Was in the area and decided to visit this DL. Unfortunately, that's the worst experience of DL I have ever visited. Lot’s of improvement should be done. Just spend some time and drive to Royal Berkshire DL and you will feel the difference. No soft play even in this club. Very dirty pool and the area.

Fantastic experience: Usually the type who posts review only if I find the experience bad but this time I just had to! Joe was super friendly! Walked me through the club and answered every question no matter how stupid it was! I was mainly concerned on the club being crowded but it was well balanced considering I had my tour on a Sunday! The club has great, well maintained facilities including steam and sauna rooms, cafe, swimming pool and a fairly large gym with ample parking. Was a tad disappointed to learn the club not having badminton court but learned we can access with no extra cost at other same tier clubs which isn’t quite far if we ever wanted to play badminton which was relief.

Fantastic experience: The facilities at the place are fantastic and location ideal for people working at Thames valley park Joe helped in giving a tour and the joining processes and helped make the process seamless!

Fantastic experience: Fantastic Gym 30 classes on a Tuesday evening with Stephen Barratt. Lots of fun and great calorie burn. So good to incorporate lots of different movements as well that sets it apart from other classes.

Negative experience: I came to the gym last week to relax in the sauna and there was no hot water in any of the showers which I wasn’t told upon entering there are worms in the steam room and the drains in the showers smell the cleaners mop whilst sitting in the 2 person sauna and that same mop is used in the toilette which kids wee on the floor … cross contamination would be an issues here !!! do the cleaners even use bleach ? The spin bikes are always broken and need updating as the screens don’t work or the resistance dosent work or the adjustments are stiff there is no studio for the bikes and the ac only works in one place around the spin area covering one or two bikes there is often mud round the poolside Ive seen men getting in sauna in their pants women leaving hair razors in showers locks on lockers broke people are sometimes naked in sauna without towel I pay £80 plus for my membership this is not acceptable

Fantastic experience: Had a very good tour with Joe. Explained everything very clearly and addressed all my concerns.

Negative experience: The worst DL I’ve been to. I’ve been travelling around using multiple DLs and this one is well below standard. Staff are friendly at reception, but the gym is super basic and tired and they do not have a kitchen so you can’t eat there. Also the showers need cleaning. How is this a DL?

Fantastic experience: Been a member for many years. Great facilities. The classes such as spinning and hiit are fantastic, and the cafe is really nice

Negative experience: Really disappointed with this club. I’ve only been a member for 2 months but I’m shocked by the standards they seem to deem acceptable for over £100 per month membership. The machines are rusted and the cables desperately need replacing on the resistance machines, the spinning class doesn’t even have a studio so you have to do the class whilst other gym members work out behind you! Plus the bikes keep breaking and nothing ever seems to be fixed! The hot water and general plumbing constantly seems to be broken. I have complained directly to the club and my complaint hasn’t even been acknowledged. I think DL need to look at the consumer act in relation to the service they are claiming to provide and generally do a lot better. In comparison the Maidenhead club is far better and cheaper! - update to the above and following DLs reply - I have emailed as requested and again, no response! Customer service is non existent across the board it seems. Happy to take members money and provide zero in return.

Negative experience: This place is overpriced for what it is! The staff here are extremely rude, passive aggressive. There is a lot of favouritism where some non platinum members get free towels and some are charged. I find this very strange. I also raised a complaint about an issue I had with my membership due to a serious accident. I did not get a response for over a month. They agree to compensate me with 2 guest passes....but failed to actually honour them when the time came. The online customer service simply denied having such agreement until I proved with my notes and raised a 3rd complaint. The toilets close to the pool stink of urine for weeks and I just had to avoided them. The roof leaks into the jacuzzi and swimming pool. They charge an extortion for membership. Platinum price for a poor experience! Avoid.

Negative experience: First time visiting the Reading club and I was surprised to find how rude and inconsiderate the staff are especially ‘Gemma’, the cafe staff. I have never had such an awful experience at any of the many David Lloyds branches that I have visited over the years. I must admit how ever the elderly receptionist did make up for it by her welcoming and comforting attitude.

Fantastic experience: First gym I’ve ever joined and I have to admit the staff are amazing. From the moment you walk in they are incredibly welcoming, if you’re worried about being a newb then don’t be. I’ve had a few personal trainer sessions with Stephen Barratt who I cannot rate highly enough.

Fantastic experience: We were scheduled a tour with Joe and although we were late, he was still able to give us the tour. Joe advised us that this branch was a Tier 5 but seems to have most of the amenities of the other higher tier branches. We were quite impressed with the tour and as such, decided to register with the branch as a family.

Fantastic experience: I just arrived in the UK and I was desperate to find a nice club. I found David Lloyd club in Reading. Joe took me through the onboarding process very quickly and the family is all set up now. The pool and the facilities are very clean and water is salty and less toxic for your body. The bonus is that they open during summer till October the roof top so you are less exposed to toxic fumes. Being a Cellular Detoxification Practitioner, I always pay attention to all these details. I can only recommend this gym facilities.

Positive experience: I’ve recently joined David Lloyd, Reading - currently 3 months. I was using Nuffield Health in Wokingham beforehand. I changed due to better class times and more availability. I can’t fault the staff and facilities, they have everything you need, and the staff are very friendly and always available to help! Unfortunately, the last month or so, there has been a few cancellations to various classes, namely spin and HIIT. I wouldn’t normally mind, but on a couple of occasions, I’m not notified until I arrive at the gym at 06:00 in the morning. I also had a 06:15 Monday morning HIIT class booked with Ruby, delayed by half hour because she was fixing the swimming pool cover. Also, it seems that the morning/evening HIIT classes that were pretty much every day, have been whittled down to three classes due to lack of staff. Are there going to be more classes arranged morning and night? Or is this going to be the norm? I’m afraid I’ll have to cancel my membership if there are no changes to class availability.

Fantastic experience: The gym has all the latest equipment. The staff are super friendly and always ready to help if you need it. The swimming pool is great – always clean and for me it's always the right temperature to do laps. The whole place is really well-kept, and the changing rooms are always clean. All in all, it's a great place to work out and keep fit.

Negative experience: I have been using this gym for the past 2 years and unfortunately, every time I come here, I have to leave in the middle of my session due to the cleaners starting to mop with strong cleaning chemicals. This is very disappointing as I have raised this concern multiple times. I have also noticed cleaners not being cautious around us while we are lifting heavy weights, which is unhygienic and unsafe. I regret to say that I will not recommend this gym to anyone based on my experiences.

Positive experience: Free weight area in desperate need of a refresh. More thought needed into what is and isn't actually used. It's a bit cheaper than a regular premium gym so I guess the 'run down vibe' is all reflected in the price

Fantastic experience: Blown away by the services provided by staff and the amazing quality of facilities the club had to offer! Initially I was sceptical going into a new gym environment, however, one of the PT's - Stephen made me feel very comfortable on my Kickstart session and gave me that boost of motivation I really needed to improve my overall health. Been at the club for a few months now and I feel excited everyday to come and spend time there, whether its for a workout, using the spa or just chilling out. Highly recommend DL Reading for anyone!

Fantastic experience: Recently joined David Lloyd in Reading. Lots of great equipment, lovely pool, jacuzzi and steam room. People are friendly. Had a PT session with Stephen Barratt as part of my start up. Was exactly what I needed. Explained what I wanted from the gym and that I needed guidance on what exercises I should be doing and how to use the equipment. He took me round and demonstrated every piece he thought I would benefit from. I now feel confident to try them on my own. Nice friendly guy too. Really enjoying the gym so far and glad I joined.
