Qmotion Sport and Fitness Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Would highly recommend, excellent staff, good prices, amazing facilities
Negative experience: Half the facility has been shut down for over a month leading to a very packed and unwelcoming gym. There have been no machines at all available, only freeweights and cables that are always being used. The gym is very unaccommodating of their issues and do not let any members receive any refunds or even pause their membership.
Positive experience: As of February 2024 - half of the gym is closed off due to urgent roof repairs, barring access to the performance room and most of the weight machines, resulting in overcrowding even at off peak times. No refunds or clear explanation why the separate rooms in the back cannot be used. As of March 2024 - works finished, performance room reopened and gym equipment has been moved to the 'active studio', which makes a lot more sense and gives more space to exercise across the gym (vs the old layout where everything was crammed in a small area)
Negative experience: too busy and doesn't let you pause your membership or get membership refund even though half the facilities were closed for maintenance, would not recommend. if you do want to pause your membership you need a doctors letter to prove injury
Fantastic experience: Cool University Gym. Sometimes it's a bit too busy but it's a nice Powerlifting gym.
Positive experience: Spent an afternoon during a recent wake and was pleased with the service and staff.
Fantastic experience: Great place and good facilities for female only gym.
Negative experience: Super busy even during the off-peak hours, there is no decent space and number of machines... Hard to work out freely... Staff is kind though
Negative experience: I’ve been in before to ask about the BUCS universal gym scheme as I’m on placement in london. Staff were really great and a PT showed me round, super friendly. Gym looks amazing. Unfortunately had a really bad experience with one of the girls on the desk who was so unbelievably rude and belittling When I asked about the scheme. I suffer badly with anxiety and the experience has made me not want to come back.
Positive experience: Easy online booking system. Great student prices. However during Semester times it’s very difficult to find availability. Maybe also need new equipment.
Positive experience: the women’s section is quite small with limited equipment but at least they have a women’s section. it’s worth the price
Positive experience: EDIT: it was great until the classes started, now it is incredibly packed, and the opening times during Saturday and Sunday are a joke.
Fantastic experience: Good facilities but sometimes oversubscribed
Fantastic experience: Great value, I liked their Saturday Zumba session, but all most exactly same dancing every Saturday ,it turned off me.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful place to workout!
Negative experience: So busy it’s unusable. I have tried coming as soon as it opens at 7am or in the middle of the day on weekdays and you can’t get through a workout plan because nothing is free. People are already working in on every machine so that’s pointless. I found four strangers all working in on the smith once. It’s insane. In evenings you can’t even get on a cardio machine. Emailed the gym to let them know it was becoming impossible to work out and they sent back a response acknowledging my issue but basically said they wouldn’t do anything about it.
Fantastic experience: Particular love the females only gym. Well equipped and nice place on campus
Fantastic experience: As a Strength & Conditioning Coach and Personal Trainer I can 100% recommend this gym for all levels fitness participants. The only thing there’s no such conditioning zone for ballistic training and no sleds / prowlers, but plenty of other goodies such as rowing machines, cardio zone with treadmills, amazing Olympic racks, pretty huge dumbbell rack, kettlebells up to 40kg, some machines etc.. I pay £27/mo for 7am-3pm hours and this is freaking incredible! I’m definitely satisfied with the purchase.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant gym and fitness facility associated with QMUL. Includes all the regular gym equipment, lifting platform/station, cardio machines, studios for other training like martial arts, yoga, etc. Indoor badminton courts, changing rooms/showers also present. Definitely worth checking out
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and helpful staff.
Fantastic experience: Spacious facilities
Positive experience: This a good, small and perfectly formed (and reasonably priced) gym to work out in. Free classes like Yoga and Box-fit and very nice HIIT and Circuit classes. Instructors are informative, helpful and pleasant.
Fantastic experience: Great squash court!
Positive experience: Nice gym, quite basic but has everything you need and friendly staff.
Positive experience: Great for powerlifting, not many machines. Also they need a gym playlist rather than the radio
Negative experience: Not high qualify gym. I am QM student I don’t even go. Don’t waste money dear
Fantastic experience: A clean and affordable place to train. I've been training there for more than 2 years without any problem. I absolutely love it :)
Fantastic experience: Lovely gym, good trainers. Easy to register too
Fantastic experience: Please read on if you want a comprehensive review. Qmotion is a gym that steers towards lifters but also has equipment/machines for the casual gym goer. Very powerlifting orientated. For students, alumni and staff, the price can be extremely cheap, especially if you purchase the yearly packages. The price can come down (per month) by a lot. I pay about £15.99 for the off peak (7am-3pm) - Check the website for a full breakdown. For non students/staff, I understand it can be a bit expensive at £32.99 (full membership direct debit) or £36 (1 month), but it’s worth it if you’re specifically into weight lifting. Qmotion has high quality bumper plates (Eleiko) & bars and there's less waiting time for equipment than nearby gyms. Changing rooms are constantly cleaned and literally “spotless” compared to the gymgroup & puregym. Timings: From September to February I’d say is the “peak season”, especially September to January. Don’t forget that this is a student gym, so when It’s not exam season, it can get quite full during the peak hours (4pm onwards). In January especially, everyone starts making their new year’s resolution, and it gets very busy. I'm normally waiting for machines during the busy hours. From March onwards, it dies down..by a lot. From 7am-4pm, it’s practically empty. This is because most students head home and return in September. In general, 7am-3pm (year round) is quite empty, and it gets full from around 5pm. Gym Floors/rooms: Theres the main gym floor which has 4 Deadlift/Squat platforms, a dumbell section that has weights that go up to 50kg (kettlebells up to 40kg) and 4 benches that can incline. On the other side of the main gym floor, theres a small area for cardio machines. I’ll admit, it’s quite small, but in all honesty, I only see 2-3 people in the cardio section at all times. Theres a few steps that go into the second floor and there’s a few machines. This is one downside of Qmotion - it doesn’t have enough machines for muscle building (specifically). The leg press machine is sub par - it’s the ones where you can’t load weights on and uses a pin to choose weight. There are enough machines for a solid workout, so don’t fret too much. There’s another room with 4 more deadlift platforms. It’s smaller and has the same Eleiko plates. However, one gripe is that you’re not allowed to drop weights in there since it’s next to the office. I’ve had the staff (kindly) tell me off for dropping weights during a deadlift. Female Area: There is a separate female area. Great for women, especially muslim women who want a bit of privacy. However, I’m not sure if the male staff are allowed to enter that room. Best to call Qmotion and find out. It’s not as fully equipped as the main gym floor, but good enough for the casual gym goer. There are no Sauna’s/steam room’s. Don’t expect that from a powerlifting gym. Disability access: In terms of Disability access, it does have a lift that takes you to the gym floor as well as another lift that takes you to the second floor. A disabled toilet as well with shower - has all the handles. Staff: Very friendly, some more trained than others. But one thing this gym has is the option to have a program tailored for you for free by one of the fitness instructors. The instructors can also show you how to use equipment and spot you. Main stream gyms do not offer such a service. Very open to beginners, and it caters to beginners too. Timings: Weekdays (Mon-Fri): Not 24/7. It’s open from 7am to 10pm, which Isn’t ideal for some, but fine for me. Weekends (Sat-Sun): 10am-6pm. I can see why people would have a problem with this. Sometimes people like to workout late on weekends, this gym doesn’t offer that. On the bright side, off peak gym members have full day access on weekends. Culture: This gym has a great culture. People are approachable and you can have a nice chat with your fellow-gym goers. Most people I've met are incredibly friendly. Overall, I’d give this gym an 8/10.
Fantastic experience: I come here once a week with my mates who go uni here. While the price is expensive, you get what you pay for. Compared to most gyms I've been to, this one has plenty of equipment and space. There are half a dozen racks, multiple pulley machines and benches. Also tonnes of cardio equipment too. Changing rooms are well cleaned and have lockers, and showers. All in all a great gym to go to.
Negative experience: Half the space with the machines are closed off because of potential roof collapse. Said it will be fixed in a few "weeks" without giving us any price cuts/discounts to our membership. Then they hit us with a outage problem in the span of a month, disrupting my gym progress fam. Madness.
Fantastic experience: Good price for students .
Positive experience: Decent gym
Positive experience: Well equipped installation.
Positive experience: Spacious, well lit and airy. Separate lifting platforms/dquat rack, cable, cardio and studio areas. Female gym too. A little pricey for students >£20/month
Fantastic experience: Amazing equipment for weightlifting and powerlifting
Positive experience: Spacious enough
Negative experience: Too small and often very busy
Negative experience: Make sure you bring your "non marking" shoe certificate from the manufacturer! Even if the receptionist don't mention it on the phone!! Learned my lesson, no to book with them ever again.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym for weightlifters and powerlifters in particular. Four platforms/racks, Eleiko/Texas bars and Eleiko bumpers. Not a huge number of machines etc. but it has everything you need. Dumbbells to 50kg, kettlebells to 40kg and plyo boxes. Bonus are the free classes for members (yoga etc.). Staff friendly and a great group of people to train with.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, plenty of equipment and space. Also very covid secure
Fantastic experience: A good equipment and much better vibes/environment to train.
Positive experience: Squash court open but no shower yet.
Fantastic experience: Clean, quiet and well equipped.
Negative experience: The gym shut down for indefinite period without refund or adjusting short term expensive contracts. I paid 69£ for 3 months, and now they have shut down without any refund.
Positive experience:
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym
Positive experience: Only complaint is that the women's gym is always a mess. Every time I have to clean up someone elses equipment they've left lying around so I have space.. Need a more obvious sign for people to put their equipment away.
Fantastic experience: I LOVE QMotion gym. It’s the best. The staff are really friendly and professional, the gym is functional and has everything I need, there’s a women’s only gym and the classes are great fun. I get personal training with Chris- he is the best.
Fantastic experience: 5 star
Fantastic experience: Best gym in mile end, worth the travel even if you're in whitechapel, aldgate and beyond.
Positive experience: they are helpful and well behaved
Positive experience: Prices resonable for Queen mary students but limited when busy
Fantastic experience: Good enough
Positive experience: Good gym. Good price. Everything you need to make mad gainz (or losses). The road to absolute WHAMNESS continues. Would give 5 stars but power lifts hog the racks at times. #Getshreddedorgohome
Fantastic experience: Perfect for students
Fantastic experience: Great gym with good facilities
Negative experience: Overpriced for facilities offered convenient if you go to QueenMary just buy yourself an easy curl and save alot of money.
Fantastic experience: Not too big, but machines for all body workout
Fantastic experience: Local gym, cheap and cheerful
Fantastic experience: Nice environment for gym
Fantastic experience: 4 squat racks, 4 platforms, 3 benches so if you are into powerlifting, weightlifting or just compound exercises then this is good.
Fantastic experience: Well equipped gym with great group classes. Off peak membership good value.
Positive experience: Small but decent gym
Negative experience: sometimes has a very strong unpleasent odor of BO, and when its busy you couldn't swing a cat in there. Then again, this is london but the cleanliness was an issue for me.
Negative experience: I was a member of Qmotion last year. In many ways it seems to deliver members with as many options of group classes and activity areas as possible, but it fails to actually do so on many levels. Firstly, only a very small percent of the group class instructors are real instructors and good at what they do and actually know what they are doing. Classes like LBT, dont even waste your time going there to watch an old lady making her extremities in a chaotic way, making it easy for someone to injure himself... Secondly, the facility is seemingly clean when you take a look around, but when actually start using the equipment is where it's getting disappointing. the mats smell really bad causing the area around to also smell bad. Never actually seen someone cleaning around (not even with a dezinfectant). Further, the organization/management of the classes is definitely no reliable, especially for the ones in the morning. The 7:15 classes often start at 7:30 if not later. Lastly, the gym lacks crucial equipment like inclined bench press, leg abduction machine, pull down machine or even pec deck. For those available you always have to queue to use them. The facility is not small, but probably the organization of makes it so inconvenient to use. The only good things are the yoga and the pilates instructors, when they are not being replaced by others, which is a total disaster . Think twice before signing up
Negative experience: Used to be a great place, but management is just letting the place go. Staff is inexperienced and not very professional. For QM students and staff, it might still be worth it as the price is really good. For the general public, not worth the money unless you have very low expectations Biggest issue is inconsistency: music is blaring at uncomfortable levels at times or the air conditioning will be set at high temperatures (I complained 2-3 times about some units blowing hot air in the cardio area), but sometimes they get it right and the place is not loud or uncomfortably hot. I guess that is what you get at a student gym, where staff isn't properly trained and cannot handle client expectations. Sad to see such a great place deteriorating due to lack of professional management.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and classes, and a very reasonably priced public membership
Fantastic experience: I normally moan quite a bit about other gyms, but thats probably because I only ever go to budget gyms in Mile End. I mean you get what you pay for, right? Honestly outstanding facilities and really professional staff. I had issues with some barbell exercises and a member of staff helped me out - she seems to really know what she was talking about.
Fantastic experience: Great gym with good equipment. The lighting is stellar, optimal for showing off maximum vascularity. The staff are friendly too. Esp the baldish looking asian guy.
Fantastic experience: Really great gym. Very knowledgeable staff and incredibly good value. You really get looked after. Facilities are maintained at a high standard especially for a university gym. I'm pretty impressed by how well the gym floor is maintained and how clean and tidy it is. The problem with the previous gyms I went to was that you get a culture of very intimidating members. Caters very well for powerlifters and weight-lifters
Fantastic experience: Amazing gym and atmosphere! Great staff who are all very helpful. Would highly recommend
Negative experience: Very unfriendly staff, esp an Asian looking baldish guy. Talking the way like he's the boss.
Positive experience: Good women's gym
Fantastic experience: Really good gym classes
Positive experience: A good fitness centre for students. Badminton halls were decent.
Positive experience: Nice, modern and affordable student gym with good programme. Wish it was open till late, though.
Positive experience: A bit poor equipped
Positive experience: Great atmosphere and great place for Queen Mary students
Fantastic experience: Great gym with state of the art life fitness cross trainers and treadmills. A lot of equipment for weight lifting and very clean locker rooms and bathrooms.
Positive experience: Gym facilities are very good, nice atmosphere and a good mix of people.
Positive experience: Modern gym with good amount of space for all equipment. Good cardio equipment and squat racks. Only one of each machine with pins. Difficult to do a workout during busy periods.
Fantastic experience: If not a student can you sing up for membership?
Fantastic experience: Well equipped gym and cheap subscription
Fantastic experience: Very spacious with high ceilings and good natural day light shining through the main gym. 4 platforms which are ideal for Olympic weightlifting and Powerlifting. Dumbbells range from 2kg to 50 kg. The latest state of the art cardio equipment from Life Fitness, Concept 2 Rower's and Watt bikes. Members have access to all classes, the option to book a free 1-to-1 with a trainer (where they will also be given a 6 week program - updated every 6 weeks) or avail of the more premium option of Personal Training.
Fantastic experience: Great gym with great facilities and clean!
Fantastic experience: Great place to train everyday !
Fantastic experience: This has everything you need from a range of cardio machines to 4 lifting platform in the main gym, and with the largest stretching area I have seen in any gym! There is also a women's only gym which has everything you need in it! Great gym!
Fantastic experience: The best gym in London with an atmosphere that makes people motivated to train hard!
