The centre is praised for its cleanliness and modern amenities, making it a welcoming place for families and individuals alike.
Positive aspects highlighted by users include:

- Clean and well-equipped facilities
- Great for family swimming and fitness classes
- Reasonable entry prices for the services offered
However, there are some concerns regarding:
- Equipment in the gym can sometimes be outdated or in need of repair

- The sauna and smaller pool may frequently be out of service

Overall, Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre is a strong choice for those looking for a clean and friendly environment to swim or workout, although it may require some patience during busy times.

Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: Early swims are good before it gets full and the pool is at it's cleanest. Australian hotelier owns Freeman's Quay according to Companies House a few years ago. Strange comments by the girl on the desk about checking in through the electric gate and a black woman using a laptop and camera which I believe is illegal apart from that I'd say it's a pretty safe place, however I haven't seen their ID or life saving qualifications.
Negative experience: Awful gym. Poor and old equipment. Turnstiles rarely work. Overpriced for what it offers compared to other gyms around Durham. Always too busy and have to stand around for equipment. Also took money for another month even though it was a non contract. Awful
Fantastic experience: Very friendly and helpful staff Lovely clean pool and facilities
Positive experience: Decent local leisure centre, only visited for swimming. Main pool was chilly and seemed very chlorinated. Baby / infant pool was good, nice and shallow / warm
Positive experience: Been going here for nearly 2 years great gym even has a boxing bag but recently theres a new rule where you cant bring your bag upstairs . I use a belt straps and boxing gloves so its going to be a bit of a chew stuff upstairs and having no hands free for the railing on the stairs bit of a health and safety issue but the boss seems to care more about my bag making a mess just by being there than actual safety and even if i dont bring my bag upstairs my gloves and stuff will be where i normaly put my bag anyway so the "mess" will still be there only now instead of it being contained in a bag they'll now be loose. But cant tell the staff that or one member of staff to be exact because no one else says anything just ruins my experience when ive got to worry a certain member of staff will be on duty to have a go . Otherwise a great gym
Negative experience: Nice staff, clean enough facilities. However, the timetable is dominated by the University and school clubs. There is no availability for the average working public to swim between 5pm and closing time. The steam room seems to be permanently out of action also.
Positive experience: Good day swimming. Showers good.
Fantastic experience: Another fabulous Aquafit today 23rd August with Beth. She is so energetic and her class is so enjoyable. Always fully booked understandably. Regular attenders every time.
Positive experience: The staff are an absolute gold standard of customer service; polite, efficient and friendly. Facilities are all clean and easy to use, my only complaint is the frequency with which the sauna is out of order, but it's really a small issue in comparison to what is overall a facility with fantastic value for money.
Fantastic experience: Amazing staff, amazing machines, lots of free weights, nice environment, wide range of cardio
Fantastic experience: I love this place. Friendly staff and great facilities. The pool is light and airy and the gym is small and cosy. The fly in the ointment is the steam room ... Get it fixed and keep it fixed please.
Fantastic experience: Very helpful , kind
Fantastic experience: It's the location for my regular morning workout in the gym. Well equipped with good showers and changing room. Helpful staff.
Positive experience: Gets a bit full sometimes for swimming
Positive experience: Better than the John Charles centre in Leeds!! Seats wider, twice the legroom Cafe facility much wider range, quicker service and tastier coffee
Fantastic experience: Fantastic setup with exceptional facilities. Staff always ready to help.
Positive experience: Great swimming pool but lifeguards are a bit strict
Negative experience: A council gym, paid for by council taxes, but they block book loads of pool times for students, the gym is rammed every hour of the day with students because they get a discount from the £30+ we pay to £17 (even though lots have gyms on their college grounds). Don't bother, you'll not get on the equipment and when you do, you'll be stared at and crowded until you move off.
Positive experience: Went during the Christmas holidays. One girl on reception but she was busy on the phone but she was very apologetic by the look she was given me so I didnt mind, she was very professional as I listened. Only thing that let my visit down was the floor in the pool, it was too high so I could only just swim 3/4 of it and heard people say its been like that for a year. Im 5f 8 and it was at my bum. Loved the steam room they have, all clean, showers were warm but some of the change room door locks were damaged but held together with black tape but it wouldn't stop me going again
Positive experience: Good gym, decent enough equipment for 17 quid a month for a student
Fantastic experience: Very clean friendly environment, staff very kind and helpful.
Negative experience: life guards talking to eachother instead of doing their job, and facility was dirty
Positive experience: Yeah its got shops it's alrite
Negative experience: Handsomely this facility is shunned with me and me old family. Should make it a less freqency of folk arriving here.
Negative experience: Joke of a pool - 2 lanes open to general public in peak post-workday time and about 15 people crammed in those 2 lanes. Spent the time getting stuck behind people and hit in the face as no room whatsoever to swim. Avoid and spend your ££ elsewhere on a nicer, cleaner pool where you can have more than 30cm of space.
Fantastic experience: Superb leisure facilities
Fantastic experience: Large pool, clean changing rooms and very reasonable entry price. An asset to the city.
Negative experience: The changing area wasn’t the cleanest and the bottom of the pool was kind of rusty (large pool) especially where it gets deeper.
Fantastic experience: Love metafit here. I’m not a member and do a “Pay as you go”. I tried metafit here once and the instructor is superb! I now continue to attend but only to do metafit.. If you want a really hard cardio workout and test your limits I would highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Really nice leisure centre. Loads of family changing rooms all with baby change and the toddler seats which compared to our local is amazing. Only downside was the little pool water was really cold my little one didn't want to be in as long as he usually would.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, very clean and modern
Positive experience: Good swimming pool, but the gym is bad If you're looking for a gym and don't mind travelling a little further or taking one extra bus, I recommend something like PureGym in the arninson. This gym is small, not containing much stuff and is full most of the time. The people that go include under 16s, which obviously leads to toxic and rude behaviour, where I've seen these groups of young people insult random people for whatever phone they use to what shoes they wear. Any reason they can find. I only recommend this place for swimming.
Fantastic experience: Friendly helpful staff. Great swimming pool.
Negative experience: good facilities overall, but the lifeguard wouldn't let me swim in the deep end all because i preferred to swim on my back than my front???
Positive experience: My kids attend their swimming lessons here. The staff are always incredibly helpful and the kids love their swimming instructors.
Positive experience: Great pool, excellent staff however poor afternoon and evening timetable for public use. Timetable dodgy after 1600 so revision needed before an evening swim.
Fantastic experience: Large facility with pool and a wide range of classes!
Fantastic experience: Good swimming pool. Lane swimming available. Changing rooms are clean, showers pleasant. Staff very friendly.
Fantastic experience: Great gym and pool some quality fitness classes too
Negative experience: I went for a trial today with hopes of starting swimming again but was very disappointed. Disco facility doesn’t provide any towels. For a simple request like exchanging to 50p coins to £1 coin, I had to wait 15 minutes in the line, despite me giving to the receptionist and her saying sure. All because she was busy comforting other customer. It literally takes a second to do it. The changing area wasn’t the cleanest and the bottom of the pool was kind of rusty (large pool) especially where it gets deeper. 1/5
Fantastic experience: Great value for money, quite spacious. However does get very busy, so be mindful!
Fantastic experience: Good gym friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Great part of Mon to Fri lifestyle don't take anti depressants get to the gym!
Fantastic experience: Good facilities and pool unless you're looking for Olympic facilities
Fantastic experience: Great position by the river, plenty of parking (paid), great assortment of free weights, machine's, jogger, steps everything you could want, two swimming pools, friendly staff, definitely recommend,
Fantastic experience: Good leisure Centre and enjoy the Gym!
Fantastic experience: Lovely clean changing area nice pool
Fantastic experience: Very good and clean swimming pool. We also signed up to swim lessons. Let's see how it will go. Staff here is very friendly as well
Fantastic experience: It's a decent gym and pool. I feel like I keep picking the wrong times though as it's very busy and in the pool that means people seem to get in the way. It's not the complex or the staffs fault, just a heads up to keep your wits about you while doing lengths.
Fantastic experience: Always clean and well maintained
Fantastic experience: Great, clean pool and steam room. Staff very friendly and helpful. Have been to a few of Durham County Council's leisure centres in the past including my local one, Woodhouse Close, but I think this has been the best one I have visited to date. Will certainly use again when in Durham.
Positive experience: Great for on the door swimming however always have staffing issues little pool is barely open especially in school hols
Positive experience: Very nice pool, just a shame there's so few times available over the summer to properly swim (lanes) .. and hard to get a routine going when the timetable changes every week. Would be great to have some consistent times when I knew I could grab a swim after work.
Positive experience: Great gym has everything you want, the only issue and it is very off putting is the young lads who are 13-17 who have zero gym etiquette, ego lift and never tidy up afterwards
Fantastic experience: Love swimming at this place normally it's lovely but sometimes gets spoilt by out of control teenagers who dive bomb and splash, swear at the top of their voices and take floats off younger kids, some lifeguards seem to be on the ball with this but others don't seem to care and it's allowed to continue for hours. Today although lifeguards shouted at them a few times they could have drawn a line under it before it was allowed to escalate and actually enforce sending them out instead of threaten then against n and again 15-20 times.
Fantastic experience: Took my grandson swimming yesterday (12.30pm) and the attendant on the desk was extremely helpful and pleasant. He arranged for my grandson to obtain a Thrive card. Thank you so much.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing pool, friendly staff and spotlessly clean. Loved it! Can’t wait to return.
Fantastic experience: Great pool, temperature & quality of water good. Impressive showers efficient attentive lifeguards and friendly staff
Fantastic experience: Visiting Durham so dropped in to use the pool and gym this morning. Clean and well equipped. Super friendly and helpful receptionist and super friendly Dan in the gym.
Positive experience: Only used the swimming pool facilities, which are well equipped and usually clean.
Positive experience: It’s a really nice place to go and have fun but it has lost its game over the past year because their pool floor is really mouldy now so I don’t take my kids there any more so pic up your game please get rid of the moulding
Fantastic experience: I swim here its a good place
Positive experience: It is very good for having fun but the changing rooms and deep end are very dirty and there is very limited lane swimming but it's overall okay
Fantastic experience: Great facilities fab classes
Fantastic experience: Great facilities and really friendly helpful staff
Fantastic experience: Excellent Sports Facility, with a good Gym & Pool. Although well attended, you can usually get to the machine you want with little difficulty. If any Students intend coming to the Gym, please don't disillusion yourselves....Texting does not form part of a Fitness Programme !!!
Positive experience: They are good and staff is kind but some of the equipment is broken and they haven't replaced or fixed but can buy new chairs and the bottom of the pool is staned yellow so it don't look that nice
Fantastic experience: 25m and smaller pool, individual and family changing rooms ..hot showers ,large lockers lots of classes good fitness bits
Fantastic experience: Nice leisure centre, very clean, the changing rooms are first class and clean, very helpful staff. The only downside and I am sorry to say is everytime I go there is a lot of people smoke outside the disabled parking area
Negative experience: Very bad attitude at cancellation. I paid the first month and asked to cancel as I intended not to gym the second month, and they actually refused. Mind you i decided to cancel my subscription after fifteen days and they decided to deduct my money for the next month I am not intending to gym. Never again with this gym.
Positive experience: Just started the gym and it seems to be well organised. Friendly staff.
Positive experience: Great pool
Fantastic experience: Excellent venue with friendly, polite and friendly staff. Even has a quarterly record fair. Well worth a visit.
Positive experience: Pool was excellent
Fantastic experience: Friendly environment, a nice place to swim or workout and usually clean.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities with excellent staff.
Fantastic experience: Two girls on the reception desk went out their way to help us when we needed help with the watergate parking over the road. Very grateful and lovely to see people helping each other out which is a rare thing these days. Thankyou very much!!
Fantastic experience: Lovely leisure club in city centre
Fantastic experience: Visited for the first time today with our granddaughter. So impressed with everything; cost, facilities, cleanliness, friendliness of staff, ease of getting in (no booking). Loved it and would highly recommend the baths for families
Fantastic experience: Modern swimming pool with lots of facilities. Very light, bright and clean. Not crowded when visited.
Fantastic experience: I swim there and I love it .
Fantastic experience: Great system in place to deal with social distancing and tracking interactions. Fitness suite has a good range of machines and weights and doesn't get too busy.
Fantastic experience: Very organised........ clean .......... and quite an enjoyable experience
Fantastic experience: I think Freeman's Quay Leisure center are doing a brilliant job with this virus around the staff are very helpful and pleasent we have no problems with the leisure centre
Fantastic experience: For me the place is great. The staff are very accommodating and very understanding. It's a great place to train and socialise, albeit at a distance these days. A great facility.
Positive experience: Very well organised. Clear instructions and helpful staff
Fantastic experience: After reopening with covid restrictions I found it very well organised. However their is a lack of information prior to going. If you have a lane booked you cannot enter the centre until that time. You also need to put your swimsuit on before you go as need to get undressed at the pool side. You get a chair to sit on and leave your bag on at the pool side. There are no showers available but there is toilet facilities. The pool has four lanes, a slow lane, medium and 2 fast. Swimmers swim in a clockwise direction in each lane. We got in the pool at about ten past and you have until five to the hour to swim. There is a number on your chair and you have to go to the changing room with the same number when you leave the pool. I really enjoyed my swim and every where was lovely and clean. I will definitely be going back.
Positive experience: Good gym, parkings not the best and need to pay for this. Hours could be better and more kit would be appreciated
Positive experience: It offers what you need and has enough facilities. Price isn't competitive though and staff isn't organised.
Negative experience: Why has it taken so long to fix the sauna? Have been to Washington leisure centre for 7 weeks than dunston leisure centre for 6 weeks than chester le Street for 5 weeks.
Positive experience: Prestige Escort Agency Girls have to work out to keep there body's in good shape for you
Positive experience: Need more aqua classes
Positive experience: Nice pool and reasonable priced.
Positive experience: No problems with leisure centre, professional helpful staff. The 4 stars are, due to new building developments, the loss of the open air car park there.
Fantastic experience: Good facilities, helpful staff and clean environment
Positive experience: Good leisure centre with good competitive prices. Well lite changing village, clear clean pool. Lifeguards vigilant and always rotating. Good selection of classes and the gym is okay, More treadmills than most gyms I have been too. No parking out the front. You do get a pound return to you if you use a certain car park. Update... unable to use certian training equipment in the pool eg. Hand paddles and flippers. Bit of a let down as this has stop me from becoming a member and i have gone else were. I know its small but the freemans pool is a competition pool. Also the freemans does not host swimathon
Negative experience: Big pool water very cold dont think childrens lips are supposed to turn blue
Positive experience: Fully re tiled pool just opened after a lengthy refit. Parking nearby can be expensive.
Fantastic experience: All staff are welcome
Fantastic experience: A real gem , friendly staff and an excellent swimming pool.
