JD Gyms North Shields

Positive experience: Neat enough gym, don't like the electric gates, have to bring a mobile to be in and out, phoned died had to wait to get out, airport style security system.

Fantastic experience: Been to most of the budget gyms in the locality and have to say this is the best of the lot, I feel most comfortable here as it has a very good layout

Fantastic experience: I got the referral from the insurance company when I sprained my ankle over a month.The Physio service is very good. The practitioner Mr Olayemi OLADEJI is very professional.

Positive experience: Plenty of positives. Staff pleasant. Gym clean and tidy. Plenty space and decent levels of equipment. The main bugbear for me is the amount of time a lot of members spend staring into their mobile phones whilst 'resting' between gym sets.

Negative experience: Awful gym. I recently transferred from the Benton gym to this one, which included an increase in membership price. After one session I have requested to move back - the gym is too small for the amount of clients, with outdated and poor equipment. For anyone considering switching, save yourself the hassle as my membership increase has now been fixed at the new price

Negative experience: The gym itself is decent; large, good range of equipment. So as a gym, it serves its purpose. The gym culture is horrendous though. Somehow it attracts the worst people going. It has become a proper little poser gym. The gym is practically unusable after 5pm, it's rammed to the brim with little chavs, influencer wannabes and Onlyfans creators. All of which hog the equipment and spend more time looking at themselves in the mirror than they do working out. Used to be decent gym culture when it was X4L, and through the day it's not terrible, but it's literally impossible to get a decent workout in at peak times. Finding another gym after like 4-5 years here.

Negative experience: Been a member here for 10 years need to update the equipment

Negative experience: Good gym if you want to wait ages for a machine as someone will be on it sat on a phone doing nothing. Get the vibe everyone thinks there the hardest in the northeast because there baby bothers vest top is about to give in If you go in but forget something in your car, good luck getting back in as you’re not actually allowed. Honestly I’d sign up to a actual gym if I was you…

Fantastic experience: Edit: Update! Managed to cancel my membership by speaking to the customer service helpline. Liam was super professional and totally helpful, even got a refund for the months that I shouldn't have been charged. Like I said in my initial review the facilities are very good, so I now have nothing bad to say about JD Gyms. Thank you! Original review: Gym is fine but cancelling is a nightmare. Need to "submit a cancel request" which supposedly "takes 30 days to process" but I'm still being charged 2 months after cancelling. Now I need to waste more time and money chasing up why my membership wasn't cancelled when I asked. Decent enough facilities but the shocking level of customer service means I won't use JD ever again.

Fantastic experience: Great facilities classes are great

Positive experience: Great gym and equipment, first gym I've been to where the squats racks are always free. Few bugbears which I guess isn't the fault of the gym. You're always going to get inconsiderate people wherever you go, hogging multiple machines at peak time etc. A tacky orange bmw seems to be above everyone else and parks directly outside the doors a lot.

Positive experience: Gym is overall decent, however I am not happy about the removal of cleaning stations. Just because covid guidance isn't around anymore, that doesn't mean they are redundant, they were really handy. My biggest issue is when I joined before christmas they were promising the gym would be 24/7 soon. Still no word of when this will happen, if at all now, and I probably wouldn't of joined this gym if I had known they would not go 24/7 like they said - so I feel a bit conned really, night time gym sessions are important because my schedule is hectic.

Positive experience: Good range of equipment although the majority is very outdated. Going to the Shiremoor one highlighted this as their equipment is far more up-to-date. The gym has a nice feel, a great range of people, ages and abilities. I use all areas and have never felt uncomfortable as a result of other gym members. Women's changers and showers are pretty good. Love that they have hair dryers and a place to put makeup on etc. the women's toilets are disgusting though. They haven't always been, just the past few months. I have noticed that the hygiene in the entire gym has been getting increasingly worse. I can never find spray/blue roll anywhere. The women's only gym seem to have placed a large bottle of alcohol rub as if it's in place of spray/blue roll. Not good.

Positive experience: Went Amy's pump class. Really good work out. The Studio is a little on the small side but great overall and Amy was excellent.

Negative experience: When you try and cancel they said you have to wait 3 days and then will take "21 working days to process". The cancellation process should be easier and it's obviously just set up to con you out of another months money. Avoid if I were you!

Positive experience: The gym is well equipped and is adequately priced, the only issue is the removal of cleaning stations. I had noticed it in a few other locations, with the company policy being 'since Covid restrictions have been lifted' and so on. The fact that people are expected to wipe down equipment with a towel that they have already covered with sweat just seems grossly unhygienic, long before Covid there was Staphylococcus Aureus and Streptococcus, and they're still pretty common amongst the general population. Moving forward I'd like to see the cleaning stations reintroduced, as most people don't even wipe down with their towel.

Positive experience: Since joining approximately 1 year ago, I have had an overall positive experience. The facilities are decent, some of the staff are very friendly and the gym is clean. However, there are some frustrations which could easily be resolved which simply don’t seem to be. The floor padding gets loose and does not get repaired for months on end, instead covered with ‘wet floor’ signs, an increasing number of members are too lazy to return weights and the staff never challenge this even when one in front of them, there are no guards for flat barbell bench press meaning that individual users will struggle to push for PRs safely, some users keep their locks on an open lock to ‘reserve’ them without being challenged or removed, the clips on the bench barbells are incredibly loose and have resulted in some weights sliding off on more than one occasion and a split hand, which was brilliantly handled by the staff present. Overall a good gym but can be better.

Fantastic experience: A well needed facility in the area. A well maintained, and equipped gym. I can't criticise it for anything that any other top flight gym wouldn't receive . That is; please can you get another leg press and keg extension machine .

Fantastic experience: There's loads of different machines, nicely equipped studio if you don't want to use those. What I noticed that I never did at other gyms is how clean it is. I see cleaning staff wiping down equipment all the time. Highly recommend.

Positive experience: Didn’t like the music and the lights were too dim in the changing room to be able to see the numbers on my combination lock. Good gym equipment though

Positive experience: You can't complain for the price. Facilities are clean and well maintained. My main issue is members not returning equipment or using excessive equipment but this is an issue for 90% gyms this just isn't addressed. Owners should look at getting the original JD/DW back, it's being wasted! It had a pool, sauna, jacuzzis!

Classes are excellent with a great atmosphere and the clientele seems to be far more friendly and self aware than that of Sunderland JD. (Less di&k heads). Highly recommend

Negative experience: Customer service is not great, unwilling to cooperate over a refund and unfortunately had to cancel the direct debit leaving my account. The gyms facilities are not that great and the staff are slightly rude, almost as if they don't like their job.

Positive experience: Good. Great push bags wich is refreshing because everybody dosnt want to be a body builder.

Positive experience: Massive improvement over the existing xercise4less gym it's replaced. The downstairs weight area is extremely well stocked with the latest equipment so you'd struggle not to get on what you wanted. Only issue that's not making it 5 stars is the upstairs cardio area which still contains alot of the legacy cardio equipment that desperately needs replacing.

Fantastic experience: MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT! I like the fact that the space has been utilised a lot better and it's now more segregated. With the cardio, studios and ladies gym now upstairs, anyone who's self conscious about training doesn't have to train next to all the heavy weightlifters, because they'll all be downstairs. It's a massive relief for people who are shy about using gyms. That said, this one is nice - plenty of weights kit - including all-new Eleiko equipment. There's plenty of benches in the free weights area, so I'm pretty sure nobody will be waiting. I like the weightlifting platforms personally, but I can't lift the heavy weights like some people. The upstairs is cool and overlooks the green neon sign, but the biggest improvement is the main studio - that looks like a fun place to do classes. Right next to the Royal Quays Outlet, so dead easy to find. Could even go shopping afterwards!
