Ravelin Sports Centre

Fantastic experience: The sports centre feels extremely modern and clean. The climbing area is well thought through. A lot smaller than dedicated climbing gyms like Red Spider, but enough to keep most climbers entertained. The belay especially is good. The swimming pool is spacious and extremely clean. The booking system also means you can ensure a quiet swim. Will be going regularly.

Negative experience: Great Gym love it a lot, swimming is amazing, the people are amazing, i like the machines, only downside it that it can get a bit busy. Leaving a 1 star review so hopefully it will be less busy in future

Negative experience: No discount for forces or emergency services is appalling. A modern and clean centre with excellent facilities. Unfortunately none of them are conveniently available due to the place being clogged with students who pay half price memberships. The public memberships would be good value if you could actually use the gym, climbing wall, pool and all the other great services the local public were looking forward to for months. If you're curious, give it a go as the staff are great and if you're able to use the centre at off peak times, you could probably get your moneys worth. Unfortunately I don't feel like I am.

Fantastic experience: Love the Ravelin gym. So clean and spacious. I go to lots of different classes and use the pool and sauna. All teachers and instructors are so knowledgeable and friendly and super helpful. I love going and try to go every day when I’m home. Highly recommend

Negative experience: Very poor service when attempting to enquire about swimming lessons. No Hi or Thanks, just asked whether I could do a certain day and time given. I wasn't able to do this time/day and responded however no reply. I assume that's a no to lessons then...

Negative experience: I joined the gym this past month and decided to start swimming as well since I had it included in my membership. Very rarely are there any changing rooms available. Then I was appalled to see that no one uses a swimming cap in the pool which is something important for hygiene reasons. But at least the changing rooms are cleaned regularly.

Fantastic experience: An impressive, modern sports centre. We went for a lane swim as the centre is open to the public. Had to register in order to book online, but not too much of a problem. Paid parking underneath the building (pay on exit - use the machine as no mobile coverage down there). The basement houses a climbing wall and ski simulator. Ground floor has the gym, which looked to be very popular, a huge reception area with a Starbucks, and the 25m pool. Had to book in at reception to get a slip of paper to scan in to the pool changing facilities (remember to save it as you'll need it to scan out too). Changing facilities were clean with free lockers and warm showers. Pool is wide and has moveable floor - half being given over to aqua aerobics when we were there. The lanes are a uniform 2m depth, so no lounging around at the shallow end. Pool was clean and lifeguards were attentive. Would definitely visit again.

Fantastic experience: It's a nice atmosphere to spend quality time with friends, and the friendly staff is always willing to help. Never had any problems. I recommend visiting once; you will get addicted to it.

Negative experience: Dirty dirty Private Gym. I am a current member. This gym is dirty and discriminates against locals and men, they offer massive discounts to students from out of town and offer absolutely nothing to locals. And the worst thing is the changing rooms and swimming. I watched the cleaner use a the same mop to mop the urine soaked toilets and then the floor around the lockers and changing rooms where people and kids are forced to walk bare foot. It stinks. I complained after seeing the pee situation on two different days and I got kicked out. It’s just bad guys. Use the beach or do press ups at home

Fantastic experience: Only come here for swimming. Great place to come. People are a bit annoying when swimming but that's the general public. Price does increase so do watch out

Positive experience: Great facilities & friendly knowledge staff. Only two issues: 1.) included in the top tier membership is free parking. However, it is only for 90 minutes. This is not quite enough time with showering etc or if you want to use the sauna etc. if you go a second over 90 minutes, there is no discount with the parking voucher. You can however, drive out of the car park and come back in, using two parking vouchers. Seems like a waste of everyone’s time. 2.) the under 16s booking system is virtually impossible to navigate and use. Activities are difficult to find and if you click back you are logged out. The app does not save credentials so you have to type it all in and start again. The work around is just to call reception and book for children. Otherwise a lovely place to be.

Fantastic experience: Swimming pool classes to teach kids from zero are so good, very well organised with many levels and great teachers

Positive experience: didn't have high hopes for a small climbing area within a big uni gym but was actually pretty impressed. there's 8 autobelays each with 3 routes at a good variety of grades and about 40 boulder problems. the routesetting is good and a good range of holds etc. definitely proper climbing which i wasn't expecting

Fantastic experience: Not a member yet as just trying on for size but generally love it!! Really enjoying fit bounce and the general vibe of this centre (after being a David Lloyd member for many years!!). 10/10

Negative experience: Half hour induction to use the climbing wall, and no inductions on a Sunday? Get a grip! Plenty of other climbing centres manage risk appropriately without the need for this kind of system. No wonder nobody was using it!

Positive experience: Music in the gym is awful, equipment is alright, need more barbell bench’s and get rid of that horrible smith machine. Apart from that pretty good gym.

Fantastic experience: Spent a weekend in Portsmouth and took a Sunday morning Bodypump class. Still sore! A really good class and teacher, lots of space, big mirrors, state of the art equipment (sounds naff, but true). The Ravlin is an amazing addition to Portsmouth - looking forward swimming and more classes. All staff seemed to love working there - you can feel this when you walk into the space. Good job University of Portsmouth!

Negative experience: Starbucks doesn't open early enough!! Centre opens at 7am no services until 9am. There should facilities open the same time the venue is open. Not happy customer :(

The most important thing is the air ventilation and the temperature is just perfect to do exercises

Fantastic experience: Excellent Gym and pool with helpful, friendly staff. The gym equipment is top quality and you can upload your exercises onto an app and track your progress. There are 2 saunas by the pool as well. The changing rooms and showers are good too.

Fantastic experience: Both my children swim here and the classes are excellent. They have lots of instructors in the pool and lifeguards watching. My children’s confidence in the water has excelled and their progression from nervous pool goers to salmon like creatures in the water is a testament to the staff. The centre is modern, the changing facilities are warm and clean, the whole centre is spotless actually, and parking is free as they do classes. On-site Starbucks provides a welcome coffee while they are splashing around. Lots of seating poolside or in the foyer and a some upstairs as well. A welcome addition to Portsmouth. There are always plenty of gym users and other sports pursuits going on as well.

Fantastic experience: I love using the Ravelin sports centre. I have a swimming and classes membership. The choice of classes is great and the pool is fabulous. The facility is always very clean and everything works properly. Great booking system too. We are very fortunate to have this fabulous facility in Portsmouth.

Positive experience: i don’t know why the reviews are so bad, it’s a decent gym, full of kit. Can get busy at times but at the end of the day so do all gyms, cheap and cheerful for students, with a range of activities, if your looking to start gym/swim, this is a good one to go to. Only downside is parking, either have to pay or find somewhere a bit of a walk away, but oh well.

Fantastic experience: I live locally and only use the pool so can't comment on the gym or classes or the parking facilities. In the past I have used pretty much every public pool in Portsmouth (Victoria and Eastney when they were open, Charter, Mountbatten) and this is by far the best. Clean, airy, bright, with a good booking system; and it is better value than others even though I pay for classes I don't use as part of the cheapest membership category. The steam and sauna are a real post-swim bonus. I'm glad we have good facilities in the centre of town once again.

Negative experience: This is basically a scam. I keep trying to book a time slot but it is all booked. When I manage to book one, the gym will be way over its capacity with all machines being used and people waiting to use them. Despite this, they keep taking the money from new memberships, hiding the capacity issues the gym has. So imagine you pay a whole year membership and can't even go because there is no slot available. Greedy management.

Positive experience: RUBBISH but also good RUBBISH IS THAT THERE ISNT A HANGER IN THE FREAKING SHOWER ROOM AND NOW ALL OF MY CLOTHSES ARE WET AND I HAVE TO GO HOME AND HAVE ANOTHER SHOWER

Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member of Ravelin for 18 months or so now and really happy with facilities, equipment and classes. I’ve had to adapt what I do to lower impact classes and swimming but still plenty of options to ensure I get good cardio work outs and exercise. Staff are helpful on the rare occasions I need their help. So far, so good.

Fantastic experience: Can't fault Ravelin. From the moment you walk in everyone is so helpful and patient. Whole club is clean thanks to amazing cleaners. Security people do a great job too. Well done. The classes are easy to book . (Even I can do it) You can book a week in advance and it's easy to cancel too. Classes really are for every and all ages . There is no pressure to keep up. ( I don't) The instructors are all good. I have not been to a class I didn't enjoy. The sauna/ steam rooms are a great place to relax after. Really enjoy my time I spend here.

Fantastic experience: I have just joined this Gym, i have to say it is excellent. The spaciousness of the layout and the amount of equipment that is available to use, and the wonderful pool with variable depth. But of course that could be any good gym - what makes Ravelin better is the attitude of the staff - pleasant, helpful, knowledgeable - just a great team. put these two things together and you have Ravelin Portsmouth. So glad i joined.

In comparison to the pool I use elsewhere, this is brilliant, clean and has lots of times available for lane swimming. Parking on the street nearby. The cafe is a Starbucks with all the typical food that they offer. Staff are very friendly too

Fantastic experience: I swim here twice a week first thing in the morning and the pool is always clean and a good temperature. The staff are friendly and the changing rooms are always clean and dry. I have also used the gym which has a good range of equipment. It can get a bit busy but the app shows the quieter sessions so it is easy find a session that is less busy.

Fantastic experience: Beautiful building, friendly staff. You notice the effort the staff put into class delivery, their passion, knowledge and talent shows. Gym is modern with latest technology, as with all Gym's it has its 'peak times'. Pool comes with lovely views across Ravelin Park. Worth a session to say you have been to this award winning, sustainable facility.

Fantastic experience: Great pool to swim in, well organised with appropriate lanes for all levels. Pool well used by students, staff, and local children learning to swim. Staff very friendly and professional, and able to answer queries and issues quickly.

Positive experience: I will start by saying I enjoyed my first year at the Ravelin sports centre. Unbeknown to me, when my first year ran out, there was no communication to let me know, I just couldn't book anymore. When I went to book for another year, I was told the tarrif had changed & if I wanted the gym, I would also be paying for classes I will never use. The booking system has had a downgrade & you still need a fob to enter the centre, which seems like a backward step in this digital world.

Negative experience: I'll preface this by saying this is a decent gym with nice modern facilities... however due to the lack of space and the supply not meeting the demand, and recent price hikes that do not justify the service their customers are getting; the past couple months have been an absolute nightmare to go to the gym for a proper workout, and there is nothing being done about it as far as I can tell. The booking system can only help so much when you are still going to the gym and struggling to find basic equipment to go on. Even at the most off-peak times, all the machines are being used and the gym still closes early at 10:30pm, with weekends at 9pm. These guys really need to do something about this as I can imagine anyone who has a regular gym routine is going to struggle to get a consistent workout week with how busy this gym can get. I've been waiting for this gym to be built for 4 years, and it's sad to see that non-students and alumni are paying so much money for such minimal service. Another review put it perfectly: rather than revolving the gym around my life, I'm now having to revolve my life around the gym. If it stays like this, as crazy as it sounds, I will have to move gyms as this gym is stopping me from reaching my goals - that's not something you hear everyday! I cannot recommend this gym if you have set scheduled workouts. If you go to the gym for cardio, this is one of the only consistent benefits I can see as there is always more than enough treadmills available. If you want to benefit from the array of machines... good luck.

Positive experience: Joined recently, with a package which includes 90 mins free parking, which is very useful. Facilities are good, though little annoyances already, with increasing number of inoperative lockers. I joined the gym to help with post operative recovery so was keen to use the SWIMTAG bands to record my swim progress. Used one successfully, but today I was told "couldn't have one today" because one of the staff was using the only SWIMTAG computer for a zoom call - no apology - guy on the zoom call looked indifferent and unapologetic too. No idea why he couldn't pause his call for the 30 seconds of registration. Smacks of poor customer service.

Negative experience: Sauna out of use over a month! It’s a shame very poor maintenance! Don’t get me wrong I love this place very close to my house but I love swimming & Sauna I can cope for a couple of weeks it is taking so long this time!

Fantastic experience: I really liked my first visit to the gym. The trick is to go during non peak hours to avoid having to “ wait” your turn. Anytime after 6pm isnt ideal. I went around 4pm on a Monday and it was pleasantly empty & air conditioned very well. Great machines and everything works so well!

Fantastic experience: Ravelin sports Centre is fabulous! Lots of choice for exercise classes throughout the day and during evenings -7 days a week! The pool is fantastic and membership is exceptionally good value for money.

Fantastic experience: Really enjoying spin classes - now doing 4 each week, including one which starts at 6.40am! Coaches are great and really push me to the limit. Spin classes followed by 20 to 40 lengths of the 25 metre pool. All helping to keep me fit during returement. Facilities are excellent and best value anywhere in Portsmouth.

Fantastic experience: I am really enjoying being a member of the Ravelin Sports Centre. The quality of teaching within the classes is excellent and I am always made to feel very welcome. The facilities are clean and spacious and I really like how inclusive they are. I love the fact that the pool area has open glass on two sides.
