Pros:

- Good variety of classes and facilities
- Large and clean swimming pool
- Affordable membership options

Overall, Selby Leisure Centre is a viable choice for those looking for an affordable and friendly place to stay active, despite some areas needing attention.
Selby Leisure Centre: Opinions
Positive experience: Would have been 5 stars if the pool wasn’t cold.
Negative experience: Got a conjunctivitis (pink eye) infection the first time I went there to use the steam room and sauna. Changing rooms smelled like sewage, had days worth of hair and dust build up around the changing cubicle edges, showers were mouldy and all the floors felt like they had a film of slime. The receptionist I encountered was the friendliest I’ve come across in ages, and did everything she could to make me feel welcome but never once checked who I was and if I had paid to be there. I was not asked to sign any kind of forms, no emergency contact info, H&S nothing. Bottom line… it’s cheap, seems ok on the surface but really not worth it over all.
Negative experience: Extremely poor. If a machine goes down, it will be down for months, they simply do not repair despite it only needing a cable and being a 30 minute job. The changing room smells, is dirty and in a state of disrepair as well, the gym staff are friendly enough but the reception desk are lazy and would not know the meaning of customer service, the management are worse still, arrogant and promoted beyond their capabilities, The best I can say is it is cheap, but I doubt it will stay so now the council are back in control. I was a member, no longer, better options in the area, all other gyms have by far a better rating
Fantastic experience: Really nice leisure centre, huge gym and nice pool. The staff are always friendly, helpful and have a smile on their face.
Fantastic experience: Great leisure centre, good gym and other facilities. Only issue is teen inclusive which takes up workers time after work.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff who are particularly helpful at reception, easy access to classes, swimming etc. Active North Yorkshire app is easy to use. Highly recommend this leisure centre
Fantastic experience: Superb! Recomand!!
Negative experience: Negligent lifeguards allowed two boys in the deep end for a whole hour before deciding that they weren't competent swimmers.
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff and building always clean.
Negative experience: The older ladies on reception need to crack a smile once in a while and actually talk.
Negative experience: Dreadful experience every time I visit, the maintenance team are lazy and never fix the machines. They call themselves a gym but have one set of cables and it has been broken for the past 2 months and nobody is doing anything about it. This is the same anytime anything breaks. Without forgetting the sauna is hardly open and they still find it acceptable to charge full price membership.
Fantastic experience: I love it
Fantastic experience: Thank you to Ruth for all of your help during my first visit here. I booked to go swimming and was unsure about the parking, where the changings rooms were etc and Ruth was more than happy to assist with my enquiries. Would definitely recommend, the pool is large and clean. Plenty of changing rooms etc
Fantastic experience: Suzie at the gym reception provided exceptional service! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and helped me with all my questions, even securing a better rate for me. Her patience in assisting me with the app and booking was greatly appreciated. Highly recommended!
Negative experience: Does this place not have anyone on reception?! I've lost count of the amount of times I've tried to call up with no answer or being hung up on.
Fantastic experience: Good facilities, great swimming pool and friendly, helpful staff.
Positive experience: Selby Leisure centre is a good facility with a pool, sports pitches and gym. Swimming lessons are also available. Although the place isn't always the cleanest. I would recommend checking it out.
Fantastic experience: On my anniversary of joining this fantastic, clean and well maintained facility in the heart of Selby, I have no hesitation in giving it a 5* review. The full membership is fantastic value ( a little over £1 a day) and gives you unlimited access to the wide ranging classes. Whilst all popular, the flexibility and ease of the booking system allows you to book up to 8 days in advance or in some cases minutes before the start of a class due to cancellations. Having attended all the classes over this period with the exception of Zumba ( only because I have 2 left feet ) I still regularly attend >20 a week - and this is purely down to the variety and professionalism of the excellent instructors. Due to the timetabling, the majority of the classes I attend are delivered by Debbie and Kayleigh, who are simply exceptional. Equally, their infectious passion, drive and ability, motivate all attendees to achieve their best and hence explains why their classes are consistently popular. Additionally, my interactions with the general gym staff from reception/management to the fitness instructors in the main gym area have always been positive and friendly - all resulting in being provided with the requisite information/advice. In summary, if you are after a Champneyesque experience for your gym needs, then this is not the place for you. However, if you want a no nonsense, fantastic value, well run and maintained facility with a vast array of training options - Selby IHL has it all.
Negative experience: AVOID THEM! Although the contract states that you only need to give one month's notice if you want to terminate it, unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. They informed me that I have been a member for 3 months already and asked why I didn't say anything during the first 2 weeks (I was hoping my issues would resolve themselves over time). Well: It's practically impossible to use the swimming pool unless you can go at random times (like Tuesdays from 12 to 2) because there are constantly swimming lessons or family swimming or other events. Using the gym equipment is also nearly impossible since schools bring their students to the gym, and typically there are 3-4 children on one machine. If you're an adult with a job, you don't have time to wait for that. The staff usually doesn't even greet you, and they are rarely willing to clean. Although I have requested multiple times to cancel the contract (which requires a one-year commitment), it's impossible, even after speaking to the manager. The only thing worth mentioning is the sauna section, although precisely when I signed the contract, it wasn't operational for about 3 weeks due to heating issues. If you want to save yourself nearly 500 pounds for a year, then forget about this place.
Positive experience: It could be overcrowded at times, otherwise it's a nice place to work out and I like the variety of gym classes they offer.
Negative experience: Terrible facility, no wonder they are not making money. Charge for parking, tried to go to public swimming with two kids to be told they only had space for two more. Large pool has maximum capacity of 24 in school holidays as only one life guard. Adult couldn’t sit in the side to supervise, had to phone up to book - no online system. Wasted trip - off to tadcaster
Sorry to hear that you are unhappy with our facilities and services. To clarify, the car park is council owned and not run by the centre, however, all customers can bring their parking receipt to reception for a full refund. We always recommend booking swim sessions in advance, as they are very popular. Non-members can book 5 days in advance and members 8 days in advance. We appreciate that our current maximum capacity is not ideal, however due to ongoing staffing challenges (unfortunately there is a national shortage of swim teachers and lifeguards), we are doing the best we can. There will have been more than 1 lifeguard on shift as we are running multiple pools, ensuring that all ages get the best possible opportunity to swim. In relation to sitting on the side of the pool, there are lots of available viewing areas for parents for both pools. No parents are allowed directly on poolside, which is industry standard for health and safety reasons. We recommend booking a family swim session or parent and child session if children are too young to be unaccompanied in the pool. Family swim sessions do need to be booked in advance either by phone or at reception, this is due to the number of possible variations in swim bookings and the extra info we need from yourself. Apologies if this has inconvenienced you. We hope we can win your custom back in future and that our response is helpful and informative. Apologies again that you feel you have had a 1* experience, we always strive to offer our visitors the best experience possible. Best wishes.
Fantastic experience: Clean and well presented facilities. Prices are reasonable and good value.
Thank you so much for sharing your great review, we really appreciate it!
Fantastic experience: After starting Move It Loose It course in July. I've found a love for Aqua Zumba Debbie is fantastic. I also book Lane Swims often, upto 3 times a week in the warmer weather. Recently I've built the confidence to try Body Combat too, which is a great workout. Gym equipment is good only downfall is not been able to scan some machines to record your workout and have to do manually on the app.
Thank you so much for sharing your great review! We're so glad to hear how much you have been enjoying our classes and lane swimming. We really appreciate your feedback and custom.
Negative experience: Swimming lessons great - poolside facilities absolutely filthy. No excuses management, get in there and get scrubbing/steam cleaning. A sentiment echoed by other parents sat poolside.
Hello, sorry to hear your negative feedback, this is not the high standard that we strive for. Your feedback has been passed on for further investigation and any action needed will be taken. Many thanks.
Fantastic experience: Been a member since 2015. Love the atmosphere, the friendly staff. Always a lovely welcome. Big shout out to kayleighs body attack and spin class, Debbie's zumba and pilates. Fantastic instructors both of them .
Thank you so much for sharing your great review! It's great to hear individuals being recognised and praised, so thank you very much - this feedback will be passed on. We really appreciate your feedback and custom!
Negative experience: Continually cancelled lessons and a high turn over of swim teachers. Not worth the money
Hello, sorry to hear you've experienced some lesson cancellations. Unfortunately due to some issues outside of our control and a national shortage of swim teachers, some cancellations have unfortunately been unavoidable, which we sincerely apologise for. We always strive to overcome issues as quickly as possible, but if you would like any further info or want to speak to a member of the team directly, please contact us at [email protected] Many thanks.
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend sports classes and activities for all, clean changing rooms staff super friendly and helpful
Hi Sophie, thank you for your lovely review! That's great to hear.
Fantastic experience: I have been a member for years. Enjoy aqua zumba and zumba. I like the music and dances. Like low circuits too. Started doing body pump and pilates. The classes are popular because they are always booked up
Hi Angela, that's fantastic to hear! Thank you for your lovely review.
Negative experience: Another case of a gym trying to rinse you of your money , do not believe their lies when they tell you you can cancel given a months notice , they like to hide 12 month clauses and give out false information, unlike any modern and successful gym run nowadays that have contracts that are relatively easy to get out of , Avoid!
Hi Jason, thank you for getting in touch. We are sorry to hear this. We make no attempt to hide our 12 month contract period, this is clearly stated on our online sign up forms and on our paper forms at reception. We are sorry that you were not aware of this. For more information and support on this please contact our Memberships Team [email protected] The team will do there best to help with this.
Fantastic experience: I really enjoy using the Leisure centre, I find all the staff helpful and friendly. I particularly love swimming and Aqua Zumba with Debbie, she is a fantastic instructor and puts a lot of work into her classes which in turn makes them hard to book because they are so popular. One happy customer
Hi Lynn, thank you very much for sharing your 5* review, we really appreciate it. We're so glad to hear how much you enjoy swimming and Aqua Zuma with Debbie. It's great to hear individual members of staff being recognised and appreciated! Many thanks, Kate
Fantastic experience: Good facilities in the heart of town.
Thank you for sharing your 5* review, we really appreciate it!
Fantastic experience: A brilliant leisure centre, with plenty of classes and facilities to choose from. Helpful and friendly staff with an extra shout out to all reception staff, lifeguards and instructors. A big 'thank you' to Debbie for all her hard work and great classes...loving zumba, barbell pump, pilates, aquazumba and RPM!!
Thank you for sharing your great review and taking the time to let us know all the things you love about our leisure centre - it's great to hear! We really appreciate your support and custom!
Fantastic experience: Enjoed my workout in the gym this morning inproveing my weight Lose.
Thank you for sharing your 5* review, we really appreciate it! We're glad to hear that you are enjoying your workouts and they are helping to achieve your goals!
Negative experience: Theres no wonder places like this end up going down the pan, like trying to get into Fort Knox just to go swimming with my daughter!! Don’t understand why you guys need so many of my details… Swimming is broken up into sessions, why?? On our first visit we weren’t informed of this and so we were kicked out of the pool after only 20 minutes. You can book adult swimming online but you have to ring up to book children’s swimming, thats if the phone gets answered…you also say locker tokens are 20p on your website but they are in fact £1. Don’t usually leave reviews, but it’s just mental how awkward you can make something as simple as going swimming.
Hi Tom, thank you for getting in touch. We're sorry to hear this. Our pool timetable is made up of multiple pool sessions to give people more access the pool throughout the day. We follow strict regulations on the number of people who are in the pool at any one time. By splitting the sessions we create more spaces for people to be guaranteed access to the pool when they arrive for a pool session. The session times are advertised through the pool timetable on our website. We appreciate that calling to book for casual/family swimming is not convenient and so we are currently working with our IT to make online booking available. We are sorry for the inconvenience of this whilst this is worked on and implemented. We have updated our website to correct the price listed for our locker tokens. Thank you for letting us know about this.
Fantastic experience: Good swim with my child, clean and comfortable
Thank you for sharing your 5* review! We're glad to hear that you both enjoyed your swim session. We really appreciate your feedback and custom!
Negative experience: reception staff are utterly miserable, give no helpful advice and are very passive aggressive. gym equipment is run down and they are money hungry, 0/10 would not recommend
Hi Kate, thank you for getting in touch. We are very sorry to hear about this. This is not the level of customer service that we expect from our team members. We would really appreciate it if you could send us an email with more information so that we can investigate this further [email protected] We are a social enterprise and charitable trust who aim to provide the very best in leisure and culture, creating opportunities for people to change their lives, investing in facilities and adding value for public benefit. We are therefore saddened to hear your feedback and would appreciate speaking with you further so that we can make appropriate changes.
Fantastic experience: Very good experience, nice equipment easy to use and clear instructions. Nice and clean.
Thank you for your great feedback Jeffrey!
Negative experience: Do you ever answer the phone? Tried ringing multiple times an hour to ask a question, not once picked up..
Hi Sebastian, thank you for getting in touch. We're sorry that you have been unable to reach us by phone. Our reception teams do get very busy at peak times, but we acknowledge that this is not the level of customer service that you would expect. If you still need to contact us about your question, please email [email protected] with your contact details and we'll make sure that our team get in touch with you.
Positive experience: My son goes to Selby leisure centre every week and does his work out in the gym he's taken by a support worker he doesn't swim there anymore as doesn't like the pool anymore as feels claustrophobic he loved it before but now swims in the pool in Goole leisure centre which makes things harder financially and Goole pool is often very busy Selby gym though is usually pretty quiet when he goes between 1.30-3pm which is good as he doesn't like crowds it costs £280 membership per year it would be better if he was able to go to the gym twice a week and swimming there too I can't afford membership's for both Selby and Goole so pay for him separately to go swimming as can't go every week due to lack of support staff.
Fantastic experience: I love the leisure centre. Staff are always helpful but I really want to shine a light on Debbie and her classes. I've been coming to her zumba for a while and recently started doing her RPM classes and she's just brilliant. Always puts 100% in, she's friendly and approachable. As an anxiety sufferer, it wasn't easy to start attending the gym but Debbie's classes have such a great atmosphere. Would recommend to anyone.
Fantastic experience: Great swim, well organised, clean changing rooms
Positive experience: Great gym really good classes. feel lucky to be a member.
Positive experience: I love the girls that work on reception they're so helpful and polite. My class instructors especially Debbie I find very hardworking, fun and at the same time caring. Love Selby leisure centre
Negative experience: Don’t let anyone in without a “consultation” which you have to book well in advance. Doesn’t matter if you train daily at another gym where no induction is required, or you’re a Pt. No “consultation”, no gym. Thanks, wont be back.
Negative experience: Nothing there for kids now summit has gone, pool is cold and tired looking, staff are helpful
Negative experience: They do not let anyone into the gym without an induction, even if they are a PT Powerlifter themselves. Would not recommend supporting this place; very discriminatory.
Fantastic experience: Very efficient
Positive experience: Had my Covid jabs here. All good Edit. The Covid injections have finished
Negative experience: Fine as required.such a disgusting shame that selby council is allowed to close summit down.another conn by the most crooked council in north of England. If you want details please contact me. They all leave with huge pensions. It was all paid for then they it cant make profit.where has all the gear gone??
Positive experience: We Went for covid booster jabs we're looked after very well
Positive experience: They are absolutely brilliant but trying to book is a nightmare so one answers the phone. I have tried to book hundreds of times yet no-one answers. If they answered it would be 5 stars but although it is incredible.
Fantastic experience: It's great place as there are all-sorts of things to do swimming, gym slimming world different classes
Positive experience: Classes are brilliant. Staff are friendly and approachable. Lovely facilities. Cleanliness will be the only reason it doesn't get 5 stars from me
Fantastic experience: 2nd covid vaccine straight in no waiting no problem x
Fantastic experience: Well organised
Fantastic experience: Modern kit, friendly staff and fellow sufferers :)
Negative experience: I came here to trial out the gym on a day/guest pass. I was told due to health ans saftey have to go through a consultation first which I was expecting. However they had no availability for 4 and a half hours. I'd reccomend calling Ahead so you don't have to wait that long for a workout.
Positive experience: We enjoy being left alone to play table tennis but the tables are not always in place at the time we are supposed to start. The guide lines for Covid are observed.
Fantastic experience: Staff are on hand and helpful if you are unsure about things.
Fantastic experience: Great aquafit classes, Zumba classes, and low circuits.
Positive experience: The staff are doing a great job helping the customer adapt to the new way the facilities have changed.
Positive experience: its not bad
Negative experience: Gym staff are great but reception staff need customer service training. Some are miserable and unhelpful. Also, they seem to think that their admin function is a priority and leave people stood waiting and ignored while they carry on with their other work.
Negative experience: Hard to book onto classes. Need to set an alarm for 8 days previous to the class you want to attend. If you are late you can’t join in. Not very leisurely and actually quite stressful. Instructors can be rude and most reception staff are unhelpful. Avoid and join another gym!
Positive experience: I took two if my children here to visit the summit. The price is really good value, they both got soft play, lunch and 2 games if bowling for £26. They had a ball!! However, there is very little seating in the soft play for adults and it was super busy! Food was standard. If u want to go I would pre book online and get there early. You have to pay for parking but u can get a refund at reception. I would def recommend.
Fantastic experience: Spend a lot of time at this centre think that says it all
Positive experience: Member at the gym. The car park can get very busy. Be warned you may get a ticket if you miss park or not in a bay.. £25 to pay within 14 days!! Gym and classes offered good
Fantastic experience: Great selection of classes and brilliant staff.
Fantastic experience: Great gym also large pool and lots of other things to do with the whole family..
Positive experience: Nothing works for long. One Hand dryer in ladies gym toilets not worked for at least 2 years. One toilet is intermittently out of use. Internet also intermittent.
Fantastic experience: Staff are very friendly and there are lots to do
Fantastic experience: Very lovely place to stay active with friends and family
Fantastic experience: Visited over the weekend with family who live in the area. Wish this was my local leisure centre. Great facilities and more importantly super helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Keep up the great work and thank you
Negative experience: to anxous to visit people who work their scary i have social anxiety
Hi Roxy, thank you for your feedback. Would we be able to contact you further with regards to this? It is of utmost importance to us that all customers feel safe, secure and welcome in our leisure centre and so I apologise that you have felt this way after your recent visit. Selby LC Team.
Positive experience: Friendly staff
Negative experience: Run down looking to say it isn't all that old... real shame.
Hi Richard, thank you for your feedback. Would we be able to contact you to discuss this further? This is surprising following our gym extension and the development of our studio spaces and so we would be grateful for your comments on this.
Fantastic experience: Very clean and modern place
Fantastic experience: Great relaxed game of bowling here off peak.
Fantastic experience: Great inflatable session for the children. More sessions like this please!! My kids absolutely love it.
Fantastic experience: Very helpful safe, excellent
Positive experience: Appears to be well staffed, plenty of activities, gym, swimming pool and various classes. Just become a member, looking forward to getting fitter. Membership reasonably priced.
Positive experience: Climbing walls were excellent for a 9 & 5 year old, Megan in particular was wonderful in encouraging the 5 year old girl. Staff generally were great although the car parking attendant was less than helpful when I pointed out to him the used syringe & plastic bottles used for drugs abandoned in the hedge.
Fantastic experience: Coz is good place for chidren for them to play to pass time
Positive experience: Good place.
Fantastic experience: Give this 5 stars purely on the basis of Debbie's Zumba class. Just WOW. Downside? Involves the smell of urine from the disabled toilet while using the water fountain. Level of hygiene is shocking; if I've told them once, I've told them a hundred times...No child of mine would step foot in that swimming pool
Fantastic experience: Great place for all the family
Positive experience: As it is an hour's ride away on a bus it is a shame that the swimming times were not as good as expected in the school holidays plus the prices were quite steep personally I think children should swim for free under the age of 16 to stop obesity
Positive experience: Great facilities
Negative experience: Fantastic facilities but it's failing on the basics. Phone on reception never answered. Don't blame it on staff shortages, this is a customer's first experience of the business, make it a good one. The showers are an absolute disgrace considering it's a brand new complex. Needed a filter fitting to the water system. It's obvious to anyone with eyes that the water is supe hard and a softener needs installing. And don't get me started on the scum that floats about the edges of the pools on a daily basis. How can the management not see this and do something about it. Dirty.
Positive experience: Happy with after cancer project. Not started it yet but will be good or me.
Fantastic experience: Granddaughter as swimming lessons there. She loves it
Positive experience: Aqua aerobics disrupted by older children using the small pole for playing with a ball
Positive experience: Good place for kids to build self confidence
Fantastic experience: They offer a wide range of classes. The gym as everything you need. Plus the pool is clean. Gym staff are lovely and will help out at anytime. Love the les Mills classes
Positive experience: Lovely pool, Perfect temperature, Polite staff, costs more than Goole leisure but it a nicer and quieter pool so I’m happy to spend the money.
Fantastic experience: ive been given a 12 week member ship through the doctors and from the moment i walk through the doors they have been great. i do a class on a thursday night with mark i think ,and he is great keeps pushing such a nice guy the lads in gym great help the pool is nice have done a class in it great laugh. ive lost a stone in 5 weeks with there help and a good diet. my only negative is parking can be tricky although i leave my car any where lol. and the gym can be too busy at times
Fantastic experience: Nice for a trip out with the kids
Negative experience: Having to put on old wet over shoes is not pleasant. If you need me to wear overshoes in the changing room provide fresh clean and dry ones. Reusing is a waste of time as often they will be reversed and I'll be walking the mess from the last users shoes around the floor. What's next reusing the toilet roll ???
Positive experience: Have been swimming 3 times now. Overall a good pool. My only complaint is that the showers are ABSOLUTELY shocking.
Positive experience: Restrooms are not always tidy, smell and no toilet paper
