Village Gym Cardiff

Negative experience: Went to the hotel for a Yalda party on Sunday 22 December. While the hotel ambiance was nice and festive, and the party too, the food was terrible: cold pitta, mushy rice, and extremely bland food, chicken skewers were cold; there was no salt and peppers, no dressing or dipping. The service was cheap: a tray full of buns coming to a table doesn't look like hotel service. Although the party was fun but the food was absolutely disappointing.

Positive experience: The gym has lots of equipment and is kept clean. Classes are varied and good. I have had problems activating my account and am unable to book classes online. This is frustrating. I have asked for help at reception and have been told "they will look into it" and nothing happens. Pool is a good size. Steps to lounging area are always dirty with brown stagnant water, cleaning needs to be priority. Family changing room gets filthy and needs regular cleaning 3 times a day, it is not large enough for all families.

Fantastic experience: Well what a fantastic venue! Such amazing facilities and super friendly staff who really do go out of their way to make sure you feel like part of the village family. This is not just a gym or somewhere to spend the night. The village Cardiff is more much more. I already feel welcomed valued and considered. So glad I joined my only regret is that I didn’t join sooner!

Fantastic experience: I love the Village Leisure Club, Cardiff. I’m in my late 60’s and have osteoarthritis, i needed a hip replacement six years ago. I feel strongly that the club has helped me get my mobility back completely.. and then some! Tbere sre s lot of people my age and younger who have joined to take steps towards becoming fitter and stronger. The club hosts an extensive range of well taught classes to improve strength, stamina and fexibility. Looking around the friendly bunch of fellow members, you can actually see the results. The facilities here are excellent. There’s something for everyone.

Fantastic experience: I went into the Cardiff gym today to complete my membership. As soon as I went downstairs I was greeted by a lovely lady on reception with the biggest smile and she assisted me with everything. I was a little nervous coming to a new gym so she had one of the guys show me the whole venue and explain whilst walking around what facilities are available etc. Fantastic experience, the staff seem amazing and super friendly and I had a way better experience than I can possibly have imagined. Thanks for making me feel so welcome.

Negative experience: The 2 stars are for the great staff there and the range of classes on offer. However Since I joined the Village Hotel gym in August 2023 there has been one issue after another in the pool area. For several weeks the showers had missing roof tiles and those that were there had damp stains.The drinking water machine next to the sauna and steam room was out of service for months meaning no drinking water in the leisure area. At various times (on an endless rotation) the showers, steam room, jacuzzi and sauna have broken and unusable and takes weeks and weeks to fix. To the best of my recollection there hasn't been a single time since the end of August where all the equipment I was told that I could use has been working at the same time.Not once have I received an apology or any offer of compensation from anyone in management at the Village Hotel gym,in fact my membership has increased,yet there's been no notable improvement to the facilities, or the speed in which issues are resolved.If I was asked to rate the staff at the gym I would rate a 10, they are fantastic but the standards of care and maintenance in the pool area fall far short of expectations of a 5 star hotel charging premium rates for gym membership. I have raised this issue internally several times but seen no progress at all. By the manager's own admission the gym has one of the highest memberships in the Village Hotel chain - where is the money going? I would love more than anything to confidently walk into the leisure area knowing that all the equipment is working. I'd be more than happy to leave a positive review then but this hasn't been the case since I joined in August.

Negative experience: I am struggling to pay priority bills but they won’t accept an early cancellation unless due to injury or loss of job etc. the stress of the bills etc is not enough for them.

Fantastic experience: Attended a fantastic cheese and wine event at Village Cardiff. Lovely idea and great to meet other members. Look forward to more events like this in the future.

Fantastic experience: Been a member for about 6 weeks now and absolutely love all the variety of classes that they offer so much that I have been going 6 days a week and sometimes even done two classes after each other. Tonight I have been to one of their members events wine and cheese night and completely exceeded my expectations. It was a full on wine tasting with about 9 different wines and a massive cheese platter with different cheeses, olives, crackers, chutney and grapes. Definitely very happy that I have joined and cannot wait to do more of the different events they have to offer.

Fantastic experience: I love the boxer and burn classes, I go to the lunch time classes every day and enjoy air too. My favourite trainer is Paula, as she gets everyone working hard, is full of energy, takes time to get to know everyone and is good fun too.

Fantastic experience: We have been attending yoga and Pilates classes at The Village since January this year. We have found the teachers to be excellent and really encouraging. Both Steph and Jean allow students to progress at their own rate and we never feel under pressure to attempt moves that are too advanced for our level. The gym equipment is also easy to use and the pool and sauna are nice ways to end our visits. Well done to Jean for organising our latte treat after our Pilates class on Good Friday. The hot cross buns were lovely and a very welcome end to a lovely day. Thank you all.

Fantastic experience: I’d like to give a shout out to the instructors at the club as well as the club themselves for a really fantastic environment they’ve created! I recently returned to the club after damaging my coccyx on holidays and was really anxious returning due to this injury but also Because of suffer anxiety due to being a woman of ‘that age’. I booked on my first class of yoga on Sunday with a lovely lady who was so friendly and adapted the class to suit everyone’s needs. The whole class was really good and gave me the urge to book another class and I’m glad I did!! I booked on to body attack and the gentlemen was so friendly and very funny he also made me feel at ease and adapted the class to suit everyone’s needs. I really enjoyed the class as a result I booking more! Just really wanted to thank the instructor because they gave me that extra push to keep me motivated which is exactly what I needed!! Would high recommend !! Well done both!

Fantastic experience: Great class “Women of Weights”, an introduction to using weights and machines in the gym. Rachel and Oneya made it fun and achievable. Good for building confidence as the machines look complicated to use which can be off-putting when you’re starting out.

Fantastic experience: Really enjoying trying to get fit with Aqua classes in the pool and about to start using weights in the gym following the introduction organised today. Staff are really friendly and I have attended a few of the social events Hayley has organised.

Fantastic experience: Excellent social event on Thursday at Village Cardiff. A.B.C. After a great aqua class with Karen we had a most enjoyable Brunch hosted by Hayley who worked so hard to see that we had an enjoyable experience. Lots of Chat with a chance to make new friends .Thank you Hayley,Gary (club manager) and the staff of the Pub and Grill.

Negative experience: If I could give 0 stars I would, I’ve had £90 taken out of my bank account for a usual £45 monthly payment went to the reception to resolve this issue and as per usual there about as useful as Stephen Hawkins treadmill and constantly say you have to contact the manager but you’ve got more chance of getting hold of the queen than him I’ve had nothing but problems with this place from the 1st day I signed up, stay away at all costs!!!!

Negative experience: I have been a member here since few months and there is always something broken or doesn't seem to work, list goes on and on from petty things to major ones including conning people by not providing discount they promised in the bar upstairs - Steam room door was broken for few weeks took ages to fix - Gave guest passes when door was broken so what is the point when they cant use it - Men's shower door's are always broken so cant shut door and have shower in peace - Not enough equipment so always had to wait - Hand wash near sinks are always empty - Drinking water tap is near steam room is broken since last week or so - Been eating drinking several times a week in the bar with friends and family where i used discount card but rather than taking 20% off they took only 10% when realized and questioned they said they had issue and refunded me couple of quid but when asked about past transactions they said they cannot help. - Not worth paying £60 and having a service like this

Fantastic experience: Good value with excellent gym, classes to suit, and a great pool.

Positive experience: Clean, maintained equipment and a lovely spa area. Two stars docked, one for each pound I had to spend on a towel after paying £18 for a guest pass.

Negative experience: This place is awful. When signing up they never let me know that my daughter would only have access from 2-5pm which is useless as she finishes school at 4 most days, Staff are rude and disrespectful at reception, A member of staff laughed in my daughters face more or less when trying to explain she had a membership as she has brought my card by accident like he didn't believe her, the younger staff member's are awful and completely blank you when asking a question,Nothing is ever working, Pool water is normally cold, And when complaining didnt get a reply. Will be switching to another.

Negative experience: The jacuzzi and the steam room are not working, despite listing it on Groupon amongst the facilities, and spa users/Groupon bookings are required to pay the full price. There's no sign of this in the car park, and we ended up paying for the parking thinking we would spend more than 4 hours in the spa easily. Turned out the spa is just a cold pool and a sauna which can be easily covered in less than 4 hours. What a rip off.

Fantastic experience: Really well-appointed gym, lots of equipment, friendly staff. The range of exercise classes is excellent. The sauna and steam room are really good too. It's a wee bit expensive but hey that's life.

Positive experience: Very nice swimming pool and facilities for families with small children. Glad we found a cheaper deal online through Hussle though, otherwise we would have paid £19 per adult, so a total of £38 just to use the pool from 9 to 12 (they do not allow children from 12 to 2)

I did not feel rushed or pressurised into joining and felt that my custom would be valued. I am hoping that this level of excellent customer service continues as I start to enjoy the membership.

Positive experience: My 3rd year as a member over the last 10 years. It's a good gym with good facilities but it used to be a lot nicer. Since they opened it up to 16y+ it's now full of teen chavs which makes it more like a cheap leisure centre crowd sadly. I get that it's all about profit but it used to be a much better crowd. I'd happily pay even more membership to return it to the way it used to be. Not even worth going now in January, it resembles an overcrowded high-school with way too many people. Too busy to use any equipment or the steam room or sauna. They really need to stop selling these cheap, teen memberships.

Negative experience: I can't leave the gym. Applied to leave in July on a 90 day cancel student membership. Which is madness anyway as you would have to cancel immediately as a student, as your terms last abput 90 days. Was emailed to provide proof of address to the gym for earlier termination (1 month). I can't email the email address as its actually a bot. Which leads you back to the original form, which I've now filled in 3 times. There's no email address to send the proof of address to. Spoke to them on Facebook, and they sent me the same form to fill in again. The gyms not worth the money, go elsewhere especially as a student where you have the freedom to leave and pay half the price.

Positive experience: This is the gym i go to regularly (litterally everyday) and all the time im struggling to get the workout i desire because of lack of equipment, if they installed some calisthenics equipment, like some straight pullup bars going across some walls, dip bars and some other equipment, I would be SO happy with this gym. Im also not sure if its the colour scheme of the place but it feels lame, my workouts dont feel so energetic and vibrant whereas when i train in other gyms i will be working out with a smile.

Negative experience: I joined to use the pool for physio and need a fairly quiet atmosphere. Unfortunately the daytime ‘child free’ hours are often taken up by loud/busy aquafit classes. So it’s either loud kids or shouting/music. It’s almost impossible to find this out online, I had to ask a staff member for a pool timetable and take a photo on my phone. It’s a shame because the pool and facilities are lovely, but the ridiculous overlap of classes and ‘child free’ times exclude those of us that need a quieter day time session. The only other option is to come very early or very late, which for many of us with disabilities is just not viable.

Fantastic experience: Cleanr than many places that I've been. Take a lock with yourself otherwise you are screwed!

Negative experience: The village gym is becoming a joke. The prices have risen and the service is getting worse.. it's getting to the point where your paying a monthly subscription for queing rather than being able to use any of the facilities or equipment... Need to cap the members your having or go back to an online time table. Today you couldn't even use the pool or changing rooms what the hell are you even paying for? Sort it out.

Positive experience: This is my regular gym and love some of the classes where I attend regularly. Pilates and Swiss balls are the one which I regularly go to. I have been to gym couple of times. There are quite few equipment. I have used the cross trainer, stepper and bike very good and sophisticated equipment. Love the TV screen. You can enjoy telly time along with doing some exercise. Would highly recommend it.

Positive experience: Poor communication would be fine, non existnet communication. Just don't answer the phone. This is the only way I can communicate with them short of driving down and walking in! So checking another review there was a different number that was provided to the main site, that number was answered...so at least should now be sorted. Facilites are great, as are the staff once you are speaking to them!

Positive experience: Has everything you need and more, however is lacking and character and is very overpriced (in my opinion) unless you're a student.

Negative experience: Good swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi when it's working, and good selection of training machines. Low rating as once they get your subscription, they don't care. The complaints procedures are non existent, (they do not reply to emails) and the management are poorly informed of their own policies.

Positive experience: It's a bit £££££. But they have a private pool. ‍♂️

Positive experience: Just joined, nice overall Gym, was told that people clean machines before and after use, not being enforced. Still trying to establish the best time to visit so I'm not constantly surrounded by lots of men

Negative experience: I was so happy to see that this Gym offered a 1 day free pass to try out its facilities. Having only heard amazing reviews I asked my sister to sign up too. The confirmation emails stated that someone from the team would be in touch to book us in. After having waited for 48 hours I contacted reception to make the bookings myself as no one got in touch (never mind, I am a big girl I can make a phone call) . Unfortunately, I was really poorly after my second COVID jab (this is a common thing these days i assume) so I tried to rearrange. I must have called reception about 10 times before I managed to get though to someone. The lady on the phone said that I would be contacted by someone else to rearrange. I received a call from Jessi Wood, and luckily I managed to re-book the pool but nothing else as my signal was terrible (no one's fault, right?) So she emailed me to help me book the sauna and steam room. I responded to her email, but didn't hear anything back. This was last Wednesday. I tried to re-book everything for today (Tuesday) just to make sure we could try most of the facilities. I sent a follow up email but yet again no response. So I called yesterday again and i managed to get through to Josh. He confirmed that I'm booked in to the pool and he said Jessi would give me a call back to talk me through the rest of my booking. I never received a call back from Jessi ( i get it people are busy). Today i called again to check and only to be told by Josh that the sauna and steam room was already fully booked by last Wednesday. So my question is how could new potential members book anything, when there is no help offered, the people on the other side of the phone are really unwelcoming and unfriendly and they just try to get you off the phone. To be honest i am not really looking forward to my gym and swimming session. I am not trying to be difficult here i am also not one of them Karen's, i just wanted to have a good workout, followed by a little swim and some chill time at the sauna and steam room with my sister. Overall, the communication i experienced was very poor and it left me with a bitter feeling about tonight.
