Services, Machines and Guided Classes
Reach Gym Southampton: Opinions
Positive experience: Convenient gym because I live close, but hasn't been invested in a while! Facilities not the best, but has enough. All the machines I was using 10+ years ago. Some are broken and out of use etc
Fantastic experience: A very good gym for a fair price. Some areas of the gym may be a little rundown but everything works fine. The staff are lovely and very helpful. It is always clean and the swimming pool and sauna are always great to unwind after a long week. My favourite thing is how quiet it is, even at busy times I very rarely find myself waiting for equipment and it’s nice to have a bit of space whilst working out.
Fantastic experience: Honestly, when I first walked in I was a little bit cautious. Certainly there are parts that could do with some refurbishment, but by the end of my first workout, I was really invested in the place. It's a quiet gym, with plenty of space and some really solid equipment. The upstairs is a bit more up to date than the downstairs, but I find myself somehow preferring the downstairs anyway. It has the vibe of a real body-builder gym, which I appreciate. The equipment is rugged & you feel properly close to the metal. The staff are really friendly as well, I would absolutely recommend this place. If I were to give one criticism, it would be the inconsistent weight labelling on the machines. On some it's lbs and some it's kg, but on some it's just the counted number of weights. It's a little awkward when you're first switching from another gym, but if you're consistent with the same machines, you can get progressive overload by just making sure 'number go up' on consecutive visits.
Fantastic experience: Great muscle gym Superb cardio. Also a pool and sauna
Fantastic experience: nice staff, wide range of equipment, never really busy and slightly run down but a good place to get in shape
Thank you Hamish. We Appreciate your review
Fantastic experience: A relatively quiet gym which means you rarely have to wait for a machine to be freed up and queue for something, and it has all the machines you might need
Negative experience: Terrible place the building is literally falling apart. Zero hygiene cleaners use the same mop to clean all areas pretty much spreading urine all over the place. Guy at reception is a druggie, guy doing personal training unqualified and unfit to train anyone. A bunch thieves going in and out. Equipment unsafe to use and poorly maintained. When it rains the place is literally flooded. Pool area disgusting and poorly kept. Not worth the money.
Negative experience: It’s so dark in there, bad customer service and dirty facilities
Positive experience: Sauna, pool, boxing room, weights and cardio areas. If you come here for Instagram pictures or to look at girls, it's probably not the place for you. If you want to improve yourself, get healthy and train hard you should pay a visit.
Fantastic experience: TLDR It's great value for money, friendly staff, warm pool, sauna and free classes. For me it's an easy 5 stars, but lets start with the bad stuff. Huge car park, but it's not obvious as it's through the arch behind. Maybe park in Lidl and then walk down on your first visit if you're not sure. The whole place could do with a coat of paint and TLC, if this is important to you it's probably not your gym. The layout is super confusing, the pool is obvious but the sauna is well hidden. The free weights and boxing area is in it's space ground floor, the 'fun machines' and yoga are upstairs down a completely different corridor. Lockers are confusing, you'll need a key from reception, ignore the pound slot in the door. Changing room floors can get wet; Sauna, showers and pool, there's a lot of water. Now the good news: The cleaner seems to live in the place, he's always mopping and emptying bins. The pool does vary in temperature but it's always the warmest I know of. If you want mostly swim time the membership is probably worth it for just that. Yoga, Pilates, swim aerobics, over 50's etc all the classes are free. There are currently 3 yoga classes a week if you can handle it. It just doesn't feel like somewhere for posers, people are there for health and genuine development not to just look good. Maybe you don't want the punch bags or boxing ring, perhaps the very intimidating free weights are't for you, or running machines don't float your boat? Just find the part that is your thing and enjoy. Any questions there will be someone on reception and they are super friendly.
Fantastic experience: Very welcoming, friendly staff, clean facilities and I enjoy the swimming and sauna and the gym here never too busy when I visit which I really prefer to the more commercial gyms which are often overcrowded.
Negative experience: The place is extremely dirty and untidy, dirty floor, rubbish In corners, random doors open with cleaning products and items etc, the pool is dirty you’ve got a deathwish going in there. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this place.
Negative experience: I don’t like the place. Not recommend.
Fantastic experience: Good local gym, sauna, small swimming pool.
Positive experience: Despite having old machines and rusty equipment, I actually used to enjoy going to this gym with my friend almost every day. The swimming pool, sauna, and boxing room are initially what attracted me when signing up, and they are pretty decent to use. I used to enjoy the freedom of the “local” uncommercialized gym effect of knowing most people, being friends with them. One thing that annoyed me in this gym is that the music they play is just from a radio so 50% of the time you will be working out to the loud sound of advertisements, which shouldn’t bother most people if you are headphone users. The thing is, I workout with my friend so using headphones is not ideal at 7 in the morning when you just woke up and want to communicate with your gym partner. For the first 3 months of having signed up to this gym I had no issues bringing my little speaker, asking the members around the gym if they didn’t mind me playing some of my music instead of the radio the gym offers, and every time they actually thank me for turning the radio off. I even came to agreement with one of the staff members that I could switch off the radio during my workout as long as I switched it back on when leaving the room, and that seemed to be fair, but recently one of the staff members who I think goes by bobby or bobbie or however his name is spelt was rude in telling me that I could not use the speaker. I tried to reason with him and tell him that its not ideal to be working out to ads, and surely they could afford a £10/month spotify subscription to play music considering the membership costs a minimum of £25, but he was disrespectful and acted in a childish manner, telling me “i didnt have my breakfast this morning” before rudely dismissing me with a gesture of his hand like I was a kid. I dont know if he was off the roid rage or something but thats completely unacceptable to interrupt me everytime I tried to speak to him calmly. I recommend this gym as Im an honest person and definitely enjoyed the facilities and staff members kindness, except for that one guy. All I am asking for is that you hear me out as i am an active member of this gym and want to be treated with respect, show some proper customer service and believe me you will have a lot more positive reviews as i see a lot of reviews complaining about the same thing.
Fantastic experience: Great gym with a very good atmosphere
Fantastic experience: Great gym with pool and sauna included and staff are absolutely amazing and friendly :)
Negative experience: Well... Where do I begin. The ground floor area, which unfortunately isn't showcased in any of the pictures, left much to be desired. It's cramped, and most of the machines seem to be very, very flimsy. The plates often are dirty, leaving stains on your hands after handling them, and finding missing dumbbells upstairs is not uncommon. The uneven and broken floor adds to the discomfort, and the limited machine selection is noticeable. The cable machines lack attachments. There are two cable machines downstairs and two upstairs. Most attachments do not come in multiples (max 2 of a thing) and are left upstairs. Most of the handles also squeek when used. The gym also faces serious issues (especially) during winter, with walls and ceilings covered and dripping in condensation and mold, not to mention a distinct moldy smell. Leaks are not uncommon during rainy weather, and the lack of ventilation doesn't help. On quieter days or weekends, there's an absence of music, which can affect the ambiance. Regarding the pool, which initially drew me to this gym, I heard complaints in the changing rooms about consistently cold water and some equipment being broken. I ended up never having visited the pool area, but I did spot a lamp that seemed to have fallen from the ceiling and was carelessly placed near the pool. The upstairs gym is slightly better but still limited in terms of machine variety. While there's always music playing, some of the machines are permanently out of order or wobbly. The inconsistent numbering on the machine plates can be a minor inconvenience but adds to the frustrations. The ventilation there consists of a large fan that might zap you if you touch it, and a smaller one aimed at the cardio zones that doesn't really do much at all. Couldn't really figure out the lockers in the changing rooms, either. Neither in the male nor female ones. Been going for many months, and always just had to leave my stuff unlocked because the keys that they provided got stuck, a pound didn't fit in the pound slot on the inside of the door, and the permanent key-token that was provided didn't slide in or work either. Odd. We did spot many other keys left in unlocked doors, probably stuck as well, so I reckon we weren't the only ones with this problem. Lastly, another bitter experience was due to a certain individual who lingers around and stares at female gym-goers, even when the machine/weights that he's using are at the other end of the room or in a different room altogether. Beyond creepy and annoying. Despite the initial affordability, I found that there are other gyms offering much better quality and similar or lower prices. The limited opening hours, especially on Fridays and weekends, were disappointing. I understand that it might be challenging for the gym to stay open longer due to financial constraints, but overall, my experience here wasn't as positive as I had hoped.
Fantastic experience: spacious, friendly staffs, lots of equipments
Fantastic experience: not most modern gym but overall good experience would recommend to anyone wanting a quick effective fun workout staff are really friendly and I would definitely go again
Fantastic experience: Great Gym! Staff really friendly, would deffo recommend trying out! Pool is AMAZING
Negative experience: Over a few years of training I’ve been to somewhere in the region of 40-50 different gyms across the country…. This one has to be by far the worst
Fantastic experience: Very Polite and welcoming staff has everything you need 5*
Negative experience: Unfriendly staff. None working jacuzzi. Very cold water in the swimming pool and dirty walls. Low service for everything. Very bad maintenance service. Highly not recommend.
Good riddance, you were without a doubt the rudest and socially inept person we've ever encountered. You even left two bad reviews with different names (pathetic). Took you over an hour to fill out the sign up form still haggled tirelessly for a discount and then after all that gave false bank details because you couldn't afford to pay, despite arrogantly strutting around like you were something special. Go away pathetic negative woman. By the way despite your previous review we seldom ever have issues with many other lovely members we have, and I rarely respond to reviews however if you do read this go away and don't come back!
Negative experience: Old style gym needs renovation, Dirty swimming pool with a cold water. Not clean No service No Customer Service or Customer Care at all. Very old equipments in the gym. Walls are in very bad condition. Feedback is just opinion of the clients and your answers to the clients telling everyone much more about you and your performance. Customers are not enemies ,but people who are satisfied or not with your service. Wish you could change yourself for better in the future. It is not affecting my life anyhow because I have been in very beautiful places and I will be again like the other clients as well, who will choose better services and better places . Thank you for attention!
You are beyond doubt thee most bizarre and rudest woman we have ever encountered. You took literally an hour to sign up, had zero manners then stayed in the gym for a further 4 hours spreading your negativity and generally doing nothing. Please for the sake of my sanity do not ever come anywhere near this gym again!!!
Fantastic experience: If you love free weights and old iron then you will love it here.
Positive experience: Nice environment Still unable to attend because of my time schedule
Fantastic experience: Brilliant gym, every bit of quipment you need and not overly busy between anytime outside of 5-7pm
Negative experience: Worst experience I’ve had in a gym. Rude staff, trying to work out and being asked to go and use a different facility. each time I moved I was asked to move again so he could hoover around me. Using “I’m the manager” as excuse to be rude about it. The equipment doesnt have any indication of what weight you are using and nothing is ever working. Definitely wouldn’t recommend
Positive experience: Staff are all very friendly, everything is clean and having sauna and pool is great. Only complaint is that some of the equipment is a bit old and rusty, but still works well mosty
Positive experience: It’s a nice gym with nice staff and the pool is nice however.. the changing rooms feel very dated and also the hot tub is broken, and when I was in there, I was told they are waiting for a specialist part but looking at the reviews. They have been waiting for over a year so it would probably best to remove that from your website. If it isn’t going to be fixed any time soon.
Fantastic experience: Just started recently at the gym but really nice atmosphere, very friendly staff and great access! Equipment isn't the newest but weights are weights, and the fact there's so many classes is brilliant. Overall best gym I've found around Southampton, would definitely recommend over going to a chain!
Fantastic experience: great gym, staff are all really hardworking and friendly, never too busy and always clean, great facilities, way better than pure gym or the gym group as has more of an old school bodybuilding feel, defo recommend especially if your a student !
Thanks Lewie. Appreciate your use and review.
Fantastic experience: A hidden gem, an incredible pool, saunas and 90s style gym with old equipment lol
Fantastic experience: Had a very warm welcome was greeted by a lovely lady and was told to have a look around, after was explained about the gym and did my 1st visit today ( Weds) gentleman on this eve was very friendly also , next visit Friday .
Fantastic experience: I went in to enquire about joining and the lady behind the desk was really helpful and friendly. She let me have a look around and I decided to join. My 1st workout was on a Wednesday evening after work., where i was met by a nice friendly gentleman who was very helpful. The equipment I found was easy to use as a beginner and the other users were friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: This has been my gym for around 2-3 months now and I am loving it! The staff are super lovely and kind. The only bother I have it sometimes some machines are not working but usually when I go back they are all fixed. A lovely gym for anyway who is wanting a quiet gym.
Positive experience: It OK
Fantastic experience: Great Gym, Great Staff and Great workouts. For the price cant go wrong either
Fantastic experience: Great, friendly gym! I'm so sad I've moved away from the area so can't train here anymore. The team are great and really useful. Good price, especially for students! Admittedly not the shiniest gym with the newest equipment, but a great place if you're serious about lifting
Fantastic experience: Top notch boxing gym... Myself and my best friend box there once a month... we aren't locals but we are athletes and we believe that this gym is as close to a proper boxing gym as you can get...
Fantastic experience: The only genuinely friendly gym I think I've ever visited! As other reviews say, could do with a little bit of decor touch ups but really welcoming and nice environment. I do pay as you go and everything is included, gym & swim & classes
Fantastic experience: Nice gym. Friendly staff. Good pool. Great sauna.
Fantastic experience: Best place to swim and Gym in southampton . Yes it might look a bit tired, but no disaproval of us older ladies or being a little plump. ALL WELCOME age , size, ethnicity. I love this place and have been going here for 6 years. some have been going since 1980!!
Fantastic experience: Great gym all the equipment needed for a good work out including pool hot tub and sauna facilities. Very good value for money
Positive experience: Good gym. Just need to update some old machines.
Fantastic experience: The building is a bit run down but I ignore the surrounding. I go for the gym and the classes. All the amenities are included in the price and it's great value for money. All the staff are very friendly and very welcoming.
Fantastic experience: Good GYM, Good equipments, good price and staff and the manager are friendly.
Positive experience: The actual gym isn't too bad, and the people are nice. However the payment schemes can be quite predatory, with a 45 pound late payment fee as well as the fact you have to provide a 30 day notice of cancelling your contract meaning you'll likely have to pay for a month you wont even use.
Fantastic experience: I trained here for a matter of months and thoroughly enjoyed every session, it’s nice and quiet in the out of peak times and not overly crowded in the busier periods. A relaxing swim and sauna after each session is something I also love about this gym, very friendly staff, very accommodating and if you’re looking for heavy steel plates. This is your place - would 10/10 recommend this gym to anybody in the area
Fantastic experience: A great place to workout, especially for hijabi’s. Amazing staff and facilities
Thank you Mazfeed
Fantastic experience: great and kind people and good weights + machines room
Thank you Yohn
Fantastic experience: The place looks lovely unfortunately still has no disabled access, even after changed name. Hoping there's still a chance a lift, hoist and ramp can be put in to make it accessible.
Thank you for your review. We have many disabled members and making the building more user friendly is something we are working on. Thanks again
Fantastic experience: Great gym with privacy and appropriate equipment. Lovely Staff! Joanna K.
Thank you Joanna
Fantastic experience: Excellent classes, very friendly staff highly recommend
Thank you Elaine
Negative experience: If it was all working it would be an amazing gym. The problem is that more than half of the machines are broken especially the cardio ones. As such they are starting to lack equipment. They have a pool it's about 5 meters long. They have hot tub it's been broken since its reopened. They have a steam room, it used to smell not it's a storage area. Saunas quite nice though.
Thanks for the feedback, although we feel it's rather unfair. Its taken a tremendous effort, on very little resources (no grants/funding etc) to reopen. To say we are lacking equipment is inaccurate, most of the machines marked out of use are done for social distancing purposes, and the cardio and resistance area is one of the most comprehensive in the City. The pool is actually 9.7 metres long and the hot tub is awaiting a specialist repair for a gel coat crack, which we can assure is not a job easy to find!. We are certain that for £27.50 per month you will not find a gym where you can swim sauna, and have a choice of such an array of equipment.
Fantastic experience: Very friendly and professional gym. Lot’s of impressive facilities
Fantastic experience: Never been to such a friendly gym! Members and staff are always so nice. Good equipment and never too packed, can always get onto what I want. Lovely pool too
Fantastic experience: 5 star gym best gym in Southampton great facilities up stairs and down boxing room Sauna and swimming pool for the same price as these commercial gyms the guys look after you treat you like a member of the family a real friendly family orientated gym with first class customer service
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Friendly staff. Always welcoming. Easy going make you feel comfortable.
Fantastic experience: Great work out. Some great equipment that I haven't seen in any other gyms and I've used a lot. Nice to have a swim and sauna after a hard work out too.
Positive experience: Nice, peaceful gym. Got all I need
Thank you
Positive experience: Amazing selection of different equipment, even is a health club with pool and sauna, only been there couple weeks but id give them 9/10 if this gym was open 24/7 it would be the best gym in southampton, without a doubt, and iv used nearly every gym in soton. Total respect guys, iv never left a review of a gym as i normally feel a gym is a gym but not this one, spot on facility really is, such versatility! “Edit! So much better if it was unisex, my missus wants to train with me And iv never seen a female in there lol” only feedback no negatives.
Hello Leo, Thank you for your review we appreciate your kind words. We are a unisex gym we actually lots of female members, and your ''missus'' is more than welcome to accompany you :)
Fantastic experience: Clean and friendly
Fantastic experience: Absolutely excellent staff were excellent service was great really appreciate it thanks
Fantastic experience: Love this gym so far, only been signed up for a week but everyone's super friendly. Also being a woman it can be quite uncomfortable going to gyms so it's awesome that there is a woman's only room for us. Oh and the yoga classes are amazing :)
Fantastic experience: Legendary
Fantastic experience: Well equipped gym, full of friendly people. Staff always approachable and happy to help. Has a nice social atmosphere that you don't always get in big chain gyms. What I particularly like is the different areas available to work out in, there's a safe space for everyone from beginners to advanced weightlifters. Then of course to relax after a hard work out there is the pool, jacuzzi, spa and sauna. These are well maintained, clean and easy to access. Perfect way to end or start the day.
