The Parsonage Hotel & Spa: Opinions
Positive experience: Our room was located in the Stables Annex which was a shame as the only contact with the Hotel was for breakfast some distance away.
Negative experience: We went for our Christmas party here last year and enjoyed it so we booked again for this year's 80's themed night . What a mistake that was , we were crushed in like sardines,we had to stand up to let the other table get to their table. The food was awful it consisted of cup a soup actually served in a mug with a teaspoon for starters, a frozen Christmas dinner with tasteless turkey and watery gravy and roast potatoes that had never seen an oven, and dessert god only knows what that was apart from inedible. The bar staff charged a different amount every time you went to the bar for the same exact drinks. Total disaster definitely overpriced. Will never attend a function here again.
Positive experience: As a party of 9 went to the 80’s Christmas party. The food was nowhere near as nice as last year .. the soup was served in a mug Why ? the meat was not a proper joint of turkey. Vegetables were frozen , I had the veggie wellington which was the better option. No coffee this year either. For £47pp it wasn’t good value , Far too many tables crammed in , could hardly get round the table. Entertainment was okay . Will not return
Negative experience: Hotel service poor, staff not friendly to non-wedding guests. Room lacked maintenance and generally run down. Spa and restaurant next door are much better and would have been 5/5 if it wasn't for the hotel experience.
Fantastic experience: Enjoyed a 4 night stay with friends whom we have known for 50 years! Friendly, comfortable and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Elaine remembered us at the breakfast and so always provided our tea as we like it. She was really friendly and helpful.
Positive experience: Excellent hotel but the dining room cold . Not a nice experience eating your dinner in your coat
Fantastic experience: What a gem. Warm, clean, very attentive staff, great service. Larger room than expected. The food at the Parsonage was very good. No complaints at all. Would certainly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Excellent spa accommodation.rooms are large and clean great breakfast.
Fantastic experience: Nice hotel, interesting architecture, lovely grounds. Breakfast was very good, spa relaxing and food at the gastro pub was good.
Fantastic experience: Just what you need for a relaxing break. Suprise night away with Spa treatment from husband. The hotel is impressive at first sight and has 6 acres . It also has a gastro pub , spa facilities, and a beautiful church. The room was warm and cosy, not modern but clean, and had everything we required. The gentleman checking us in was lovely and really helpful even when we couldn't recall our car registration( senior moment). All staff friendly . Ate at the Fat Abbott, which was nice. Food is warm and tasty. There was a wedding on both days that looked lovely. Breakfast was good. there were plenty of cooked items and all hot. The Spa staff were very friendly and informative. The site was lovely and clean. Facilities were great. Steam room, aromotherapy room, sauna , jacuzzi, and swimming pool. Our treatment was for couples, and we were informed about the treatment. This was the most relaxing treatment we have had . So thank you, Sylvia and her colleague, for this experience. We will be back. Highly recommend the Parsonage and the Spa.
Positive experience: Hotel it's self was fantastic, staff very helpful and friendly however we stayed in the enhanced room and it was very dated, wallpaper falling off ceiling etc, the bathroom was the only modern part of the room and the Jacuzzi bath was amazing after a day walking round York. The spa was brilliant with 4 different rooms steam room, sauna, salt room and aromatherapy room Jacuzzi nice and big and very warm, pool however felt freezing after being in the Jacuzzi. Would stay again but wouldn't pay for the upgraded room.
Positive experience: Lovely hotel. Bedrooms a little outdated, without enough plug sockets. Breakfast low quality for price point. Staff very helpful.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful hotel friendly staff good food, fabulous spa well worth a visit. Plenty parking
Positive experience: Pleasant country house hotel but the standard of the room was a little disappointing. Staff were polite and helpful. Breakfast was good. Hiring a Manager with decent attention to detail could improve things tremendously here, as there are niggly issues all over the hotel that should have been spotted and sorted out long ago.
Negative experience: Rooms are dated and could do with freshening up, WiFi is next to useless, house keeping was missed twice even when the request tag was left on the door, food is good and the pool and jacuzzi make the stay. The flies in the room were unreal………I counted 28 last night! . Not pleasant at all!!!
Fantastic experience: Close enough to York for speedy car access to all attractions but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. A charming hotel where staff work incredibly hard to ensure customer delight. The hotel caters for wedding parties and other special events including special package stays which are always popular. A busy hotel during peak periods such as Christmas… important to book well in advance. Excellent spa facilities, safe private car park
Positive experience: Stayed for one night. The food is beautiful and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The spa and pool was very clean and beautiful. Only downfall was I woke up with ceiling on me and the floor from where it had crumbled. I did however inform staff on departure and they was very apologetic.
Fantastic experience: very picturesque hotel in beautiful grounds. food at the Fat Abbot was good, and the spa good too. had an excellent massage from Jami. all in all a good stay and we will be back. is looking a little tired in places, nonetheless a great visit
Positive experience: Room was nice but breakfast for the price your paying would expect service not a Luke warm buffet
Fantastic experience: Hired Wenlock room for my parents' 80th birthdays. Very spacious, excellent service by Elaine and staff. The staff catered to our every needs. Delicious food and definitely worth the money. The parsonage is in a quiet and beautiful location.
Positive experience: The parsonage is a lovely character hotel. GOOD POINTS : The rooms are lovely with boutique style bathroom. Good tea and coffee making facilities. Gardens nice. Spa facitlities are great but is tatty in places, *** BAD POINTS *** Room Bed was uncomfortable : rock hard like sleeping on the floor , pillows equally as bad. Swimming pool area needed a deep clean, overflow was full of green gunk. The steam rooms were dirty, scum all over the grout. Changing rooms : Dirty , Shower boiler not working ....so ice cold showers only and not cleaned (full of scum and generally grubby). The Fat abbot was pricey for drinks This is a 4 star hotel but needs some work and issues resolving.
Positive experience: Excellent spa with pool. Gorgeous period hotel.
Fantastic experience: Fab day out at the spa, food was amazing staff very helpful x
Negative experience: Considering what we paid for 1 night in a family room I was really disappointed with the cleanliness and the facilities in the room. The main entrance and stairwell carpets were not clean. There was dead insects trodden into the carpet and they looked like they hadn't been vacuumed in a while. Our room too gave the impression that it hadn't seen a vacuum for a few days too. We booked a family room for three guests. In our room were two towels and half a toilet roll. I had to go and ask for more. There was no fridge - which for a 4 * hotel I think is madness. No bottles of water in the room. Only 2 glasses (again..! booked a family room). All in all...when you book a 4* hotel and spend >£170 per night I expect more. I think my expectations are only amplified by the fact the main building is lovely and the staff were great too. Can't complain about the breakfast. All in all a very mixed experience at the Parsonage Hotel but mostly the cleanliness and facilities in our room have let them down and left a negative effect on our stay there.
Positive experience: Lovely location, staff friendly and attentive. The hotel is dated but comfortable. Bed was comfy, but decor could do with a refresh. Breakfast was good, dinner starter and main just OK, desert lovely, but we were part of a wedding party so this was bulk cooked. No signal on phone and WIFI not great.
Positive experience: Overall brilliant experience at the spa and peaceful moments with relaxing music in the background. Some negatives and areas for improvement: cob webs in the room and on the corridor. General cleaning could be better. Staff during breakfast and lunch had issue with communication, but the food itself was very tasty. Definitely will go back again in future.
Positive experience: Room OK, comfortable, bath with shower fitting good pressire and temp control, but decor tired. Wood rotting in places, and bath panel suffering from water damage. Staff excellent, as was breakfast. Fat Abbot lacked atmosphere. In need of a general refurb and freshen up.
Positive experience: Lovely hotel, brilliant staff, excellent breakfast and perfect location. I have stayed here on a few occasions and always had a good experience, as I did again in this visit. My only slight niggle is that not everything worked as it should in the room. The extract fan in the bathroom didn't work; not a deal breaker but it became a steam room within a minute of starting the shower. As I say not a major issue but I feel for the cost of the room it should work.
Fantastic experience: Spacious rooms, comfy bed, secure. Dated but it is an old building. It would benefit from an electrical upgrade , lighting could be improved, especially when guests are preparing for a wedding.
Positive experience: Spacious rooms, but there's really no need for dance music in the breakfast area and lounge on a Saturday morning.
Negative experience: Not a great experience at all. On arrival I was given receptionists verbal directions to my room which was positioned outside from the main building. With rain pouring down I tried to locate the room. No signage or indication available, which is poor, I was wandering around for 2/3 minutes getting drenched. Finally came across a door and pushed through into darkness !! Discovered the room by chance and subsequently found the hall light switch afterwards (why no movement sensor lighting ??) Room Decor was dirty cream colours with 1970's carpet and furniture. Bathroom was beige ! Generally old fashioned and highly overpriced at £126 per night. Zero tech features such as USB plug. Sparse hot drinks offerings with no Hot Choc option (hard luck if you don't like tea/coffee). No mineral water either. TV did not work - forever freezing and pixelating - reported this. Overall this did not feel clean, and single female travellers beware in my opinion. Buffet Breakfast was lukewarm for the "hot" option, continental was regarded as "ok" at best. Really unsure where those AA stars came from?? Hotel describes itself as "Classic Style with a modern twist" = Oliver Twist more like. Will not return unless some major investment and modernisation takes place and the rate addressed to something sensible for this area. Pub next door deserves a positive mention with top staff and decent food - Shame the hotel cannot do the same
Negative experience: A horrible hotel that is apparently 4 stars in rating? The room was so outdated and poor quality we barely wanted to stay inside it. It was cold, it smelt, the bed had a weird curtain design that didn't work at all. Laying on the bed, looking at the ceiling you saw cheap fixing, mdf slapped on everywhere, poor paint slapped on and generally something I could do better with my eyes closed... The bathroom was disgusting, actually disgusting. Cracked tiles everywhere. Mould all over the ceilings. The bath was falling apart with screws hanging out, it all smelt. Cobwebs everywhere. The doors were scuffed and in general it's not worth anything more £50 a night at best. Even premier inn rooms are much better standards than this, and clean! The room isn't even in the same building as the main building, it's some extended poorly made looking building that resembled more of a converted shed. The ceiling light is caked in flies and bugs, made us want to sit in the dark so we couldn't see around us. The spa area was nice, and the pool and hottub was OK, but it's hard to get that wrong. Morning breakfast was actually nice and everything was fresh and on display. Disgusting rooms. If I knew it was this bad I would not had gone.
Positive experience: When we arrived our room wasn't ready. We waited an hour! The manager was very apologetic and offered a free bottle if wine with our evening meal. The meals in The Fat Abbott were superb. Staff were very helpful and friendly. It was a treat for my partners birthday. They put a card on the table for him and made a birthday greeting on a board around his sweet. Thank you for that special treat. Over and above and a very nice gesture
Positive experience: I have actually stayed here previously this time was not a good experience.i was given a room in the pub adj to the hotel Room 67.my advice avoid rooms in the pub. Like sleeping in a disco sauna Very hot room and as above the pub ,music all night until pub shuts.had to open all windows only to be woken at 5am by outside traffic. Gym needs an update , out of date equipment, pool ok but very busy. Really could do better.
Negative experience: We've been here before and enjoyed ourselves, but on this occasion, the tiredness around the spa pool area was obvious. the floor around the pool, green stains on the floor, and everything in the spa area looked tired and ready for updating. Only one working toilet for the ladies and no light in the shower i used. Won't be going back unless major changes.
Fantastic experience: Great hotel. Spa has good facilities. A pool,a jacuzzi, a steam room, a sauna, aromatherapy steam room and a salt inhalation room. Staff super. Treatment was lovely. Rooms comfortable food in fat abbot tasty and plenty of it and well worth the money. Breakfast was good. Overall very nice quiet relaxing place.
Fantastic experience: My wife and I were visiting from the US and originally planned to stay in York. However, upon arrival, we found most rooms to be booked out. We found The Parsonage and booked a room for 2 nights. We were above the pub, which shuts down no later than 11pm on the weekend, so no noise. The room was older, but we found it to be nice. It was exactly what we needed. Maybe a touch over priced, but we found it to be clean. Breakfast was excellent. The pub food is also very good. The grounds are also great. It is a short drive into York or you can also ride the bus that runs straight into the city.
Fantastic experience: The building is beautiful, you can see a lot of the original structure and history, even the original plans are displayed. It is glorious in its original beauty. The staff were kind and polite and the food was delicious. The room was just the right temperature as you would expect with original windows. A really comfy nights sleep and with great facilites and beautiful garden surroundings this is a lovely hotel. I’d definitely come back
Fantastic experience: A beautiful venue back from the roads. The spa facilities were lovely and staff were welcoming and kind. The attached pub also served a lovely Sunday roast lunch. I'm hoping to return again
Positive experience: The room felt cold but it did warm up eventually. The staff were lovely, the food at the Fat Abbot certainly wasn't "gastro", smallest prawns, more like shrimps and dry chicken with quarter of a bag of rocket salad and Frozen French fries!!! The Spa was lovely, mixed experience.
Positive experience: Sadly, this hotel falls very short of the advertised 4 star rating. If you have a cat, you like to swing around, don't take it with you. Seriously though the staff were first rate but the hotel is very tired and in need of sympathetic refurbishment. A beautiful building spoilt by lack of investment.
Negative experience: What a shambles! We booked here as a treat to ourselves for our wedding anniversary. We booked a spa day with an overnight stay and dinner. Only saving grace was 2 members of staff, one fantastic lady in the main hotel and the spa staff who performed our treatments. Otherwise, our visit was not worth the money at all. The rooms are old and outdated, as well as being in desperate need for a refurbishment. We found pubic hairs and lots of hair in our bed, in addition to stains on most surfaces, a sticky carpet and thin as heck walls. We could hear everything around us as if we were in the room. The hotel in general is very tired and most surfaces and floors are stained. Definitely not 4 star standard at all. Some members of staff are extremely rude, where others are brilliant. So a lack in consistency across the board for a 4 star hotel. The food was good and the only reason to come back again! We only didn’t complain to move rooms, as when we arrived in reception two other guests were complaining about issues with their rooms too. So we decided for the sake of our anniversary just stick it out and try to enjoy our time together.
Positive experience: We stayed in the 4poster bedroom room 4 and the paper on ceiling was peeling off and water marks all over it very 1950 the bathroom was nice and updated went to the restaurant at dinner and asked if we needed to book a table they said no so we went for tea and got told that there was booked up all night so had to drive at least 20mins to beefeater
Positive experience: Had a great break, just wished the WiFi lasted longer than 10 mins, forever re connecting. Food and service very good. Visited the spa, most relaxing.
Positive experience: Treated someone to a day trip to the spa, staff friendly and treatments good. But disappointed with facilities in spa. Went to the fat Abbott attached for lunch, food was okay and building nice but chairs were terrible, uncomfortable and tatty.
Positive experience: First off would like to start by saying that this is by no means a bad hotel, it's just not four star as claimed. Reception staff were very polite and courteous (as were all of the staff). When we arrived at our room we noticed how small the room was, not too much of a big deal but the rooms themselves are in need of renovation, the entire bathroom could do with an overhaul, shower was incredibly cramped and the actual shower system itself was dated and had too much pressure leading to discomfort. The beds are very comfortable, but where we were located a door was next to our room to the stairs to get down, which when shut echoed through the walls. We also could hear the people in the room over having a conversation, just not good enough in a supposed four star hotel. Breakfast was okay, fairly standard but not expecting much more than that. The spa itself is excellent (I suspect also the reason for the 4 star) had a great massage and the pool area is well equipped with a sauna, steam room, hot tub and salt room. Overall I don’t think this place is good value for money, even with the spa included in the price.
Fantastic experience: Stayed at th parsonage Hotel for new year 3 nights. Beautiful hotel, very friendly staff. The food at the fat abbot restaurant and bar was lovely, would definitely come back as it was so relaxing. Love the spa and pool.
Positive experience: Stayed here recently with my boyfriend to break up our stay up Yorkshire. We were so excited for our stay mainly because we had spa treatments booked at the spa on site! There was lots of parking on site which is great! The building looked absolutely beautiful outside. We checked in and had a quick conversation with the male receptionist who was very polite. He told us breakfast finished at 9:30am the next day but I think it was actually supposed to be 10:30 as it was a Saturday but we went early enough not to chance it. When we got to our room, we were not in the main building (not an issue for us, only small walk). I pointed out straight away that we were right next to the fire door. The room was nice but it was quite small. Good enough for one night. The towel radiator took ages to come on. We thought it may not be working but the plug for it was on, but it meant the bathroom was freezing. In the morning it was on, but didn’t do much. The plastic part by the pipe was cracked and I think it could potentially be broken. The bed was nice and comfy and there was a TV. There were a few missed cobwebs we could see on the lamps, I know things can be missed. We paid just under £200 for the night and to be honest, we did not think it was worth it for the room we had. Our price does include use of the spa but if I was to take that out of the mix, it was not worth the price. We then went to the spa before our evening meal and loved the spa. Beautiful decor. Lovely staff and great treatments! Because of Christmas period they shortened the times, but this didn’t affect us. We got back to our room and got ready for dinner at the hotels onsite restaurant/pub called ‘The Fat Abbott’ which we had a really nice and well priced meal. We paid by card and wanted to tip, but the lovely server said they cannot take tips on the card machine and we had no cash which we thought was a shame. When in bed, I could hear the room next door to us as if we were in their room. I could hear the person snoring and coughing and then heard their conversation the following morning around 7am. The fire door and next doors door also slammed whenever it was closed, shaking us awake and almost shaking our door as well. We went down to breakfast, the decor of the breakfast room was really lovely. When we got seated we had a really smiley and upbeat lady ask if we wanted tea or coffee and she was fab! The selection was ok! I personally thought the food was ok. The bacon was quite well done so was quite tough, the scrambled eggs were too creamy for my taste and the sausages were a little too stodgy . All in all, the hotel was ok for one night. The staff were great but it’s a 4 star hotel, so there is more of an expectation and sadly besides the staff/spa and restaurant. The room / price of room let it down.
Positive experience: Had an anniversary stay over here. Loved the little touches they added to the room. Breakfast was lovely, too.
Positive experience: Just outside of York. Very attractive building and setting. Rooms are both in the main building ( not as nice in my opinion). And other apartment style which were nice an spacious. Waiting staff here are friendly, efficient and numerous. We attended a black tie event for Christmas and it was a great night, with excellent entertainment from the undercover waiters, and excellent 4 course meal. There is a very nice spa onsite. I had a massage and although excellent it was £75 for a 1 hour treatment. Very expensive. Spa also has a decent pool, sauna, steam room, and salt inhalation room. There is also a very well equipped gym. I can easily recommend this place for a special occasion. The only issue I have is they rarely pick up the phone at reception which can be infuriating. But aside from this a real top class venue.
Positive experience: This is a beautiful hotel and spa but clearly needs more staff. Breakfast was a nightmare due to a wedding the day before, lack of gluten free food and poor service.
Negative experience: I would not rate this as a 4 star more like at best a average 3 star hotel as its very tired and dated The beds are awful the carpets in our room needed a hoover and dust covered vents, the shower and sinks would not drain cracks and poorly botched jobs covered up with a poorly painted jobs. In terms of the spa it was very grungy and dirty mossy and slimmy floors the showers did not worked properly and alot of beams where covered in rust one of the staff seemed to think by getting a bucket filling it up with pool water and throwing it on the floor then using a squeeze was good enough to cleen it was not good enough!! was not a relaxing atmosphere!! Luckily we did have a decent treatment, the fat abbot resturant was good and staff were friendly which was good.
Fantastic experience: Great weekend away with our family and two young grandchildren. Staff were very helpful and arranged early access to one of our rooms to accommodate our 9 week old granddaughter. We ate at the Fat Abbott pub next to the hotel. Again the staff were very welcoming and were brilliant in the way they interacted with our grandson. The food was fantastic and the chocolate brownies we had for dessert, including our grandson, were fabulous!
Positive experience: Stopped of at the spa. The spa need a little update. As it's seen better days. Nice tho. Staff are friendly. I had a pedicure. However it was more a file and polish. For £38.00 was over priced what what it was
Positive experience: Good for bus route outside for city centre. Outlet near and park and ride. Staff excellent. Building could do with complete refurbishment. Restaurant very good . Food excellent. Good to have veg and greens on the menu. Spa also excellent.
Positive experience: Very tired hotel, it is in need of renovation, especially for the price they charge. They need extra plug sockets in the room and clean carpets. Very beautiful exterior - both build and grounds. Convenient pub next door that serves below average food. Staff seemed friendly, but we had limited interactions. We were at an off-site wedding which was too from the hotel.
Fantastic experience: We just celebrated our wedding at the Parsonage and I can not recommend this venue enough! Extremely reasonably priced; Communication was fantastic, service for organising, set up, food service and bar service were flawless. The DJ they arranged was brilliant and the food was delicious with great portions and quality. Everyone thinks their wedding day was perfect, but thanks to the Parsonage team ours really was extra special!
Negative experience: Very mixed , room had a window that would not close , also no jacuzzi bath despite advertised , also a double bed not king size as advertised . Did move us but shouldn’t put in rooms like that to start . Had lasagne in pub , was Luke warm and really not nice , also had an email confirmation that we had 30 pound each to spend for evening meal , but man in pub said only 25 . Afternoon tea , breakfast and massages nice but overall not worth money paid
Positive experience: Overall we had a good experience, we used the spa facilities and had the deep tissue massage. The massage and the ladies who did it was great, it was a super relaxing experience. The downside however, was the spa area and changing rooms look really tired. Lots of light bulbs out, ceiling boards in the changing areas all out, we felt a bit exposed. Generally the experience was let down by the quality of the spa area
Positive experience: My overall view of this property is good. It is a lovely high class stately house that is worthy of a wedding, or in my case, an anniversary. There are a few details that could have made it a five star stay. The hotel is twenty or so minutes outside York and is easy enough to find. I initially drove in the exit drive as the sign to say entrance 100m is at the bottom of a large sign that is too long to read when driving. There is plenty of parking and I felt my car was safe. The room i booked was one of two that sits separate from the main building giving it a special feeling perfect for the occasion. The only issue I had with the room was small details in the bathroom like peeling paint, cobwebs, broken shower screen, broken plug chain and a missing bind. The blind was a show stopper for my wife as people in the car park could look in, albeit through privacy glass. The spa was fabulous with pool, hot tub, steam room, sauna, aromatherapy room and salt room. We found out the hard way that you need £1 for the lockers and have to rent a towel for £1.50. I would have appreciated knowing that before going. Despite the small items mentioned, I was very happy to have picked a great place. I would recommend.
Positive experience: A lovely hotel based in the original Parsonage. The restaurant Fat Abbott is next door to the hotel, and the Spa is a short walk, all located together in lovely grounds. Breakfast is served in the hotel building, which also has its own bar and lounge serving afternoon tea. The rooms are fine, could use a little more clothes storage. The Spa is really good, with a nice swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms, large gym and treatments. Food is good. Plenty of staff, good service. Location is nice, quiet area outside York near designer outlet.
Fantastic experience: I found the Hotel staff were lovely and polite & helpful. The room was clean and bed very comfy. Afternoon tea was very nice and the evening meal was delicious. Good menu choices. The Spa treatment was great & very relaxing along with the pool & facilities ( very clean). Beautiful gardens and out door space x
Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel, very clean and breakfast wonderful. Added bonus if pub/ restaurant on grounds along with very relaxing spa. What more could you ask for!! Great location for visiting York as well.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful hotel and grounds. Nothing else in Escrick though. Lovely spa and gym. Disappointed in that we went for two night break but unable to use pool second day as it was closed because of issues.
Fantastic experience: Had a lovely afternoon tea with a glass of fizz, lovely setting overlooking the gardens. Good selection of sandwiches and cakes . Great service.
Positive experience: Great staff. Lovely and quiet in the spa, not crowded. The food was nice but huge portions. I felt really refreshed on the way home.
Positive experience: Room was a little dated but that's to be expected in an old house, it was huge though and clean. The staff were lovely and helpful. The spa was fantastic!! Will definitely stay again
Fantastic experience: We went for a meal here. The food was outstanding. The meat was cooked perfectly. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Positive experience: The staff here are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is buffet style and everything is kept hot. There is also cereal, pastries, fruit and toast available. There are various rooms available to sit and have tea and a bar for alcoholic drinks too. There are various function rooms and a spa with swimming pool and gym for guest use. The superior room we stayed in was large with a small but adequate bathroom. The decor was a little dated perhaps but everywhere was clean. Breakfast is served in the main hotel but dinner is available in the Fat Abbot pub located in the grounds. The location is great for visiting York which is only 20 minutes away by car. There is also a bus stop a few minutes walk away. The York outlet shopping centre is even closer. Not the cheapest place to stay but very nice.
Negative experience: Would I come back ? No Rooms needs some loving with wallpaper ripped in few places, bathroom with some wooden tiles used a cover for under sink ( room 26). No shampoo or soap in the room either Positive about the room - Netflix as someone forgot to log off Breakfast good, no complains Service - some training and supervision would be great as young girls behind the bar need some help Reception- a bit of smile and good morning/ hello wouldn’t hurt… Fat abbot - good satisfactory but nothing too special. Service not attentive, if you don’t catch someone attention they would not approach Positive - the grounds around the hotel are gorgeous I hope they will step up a bit as there is not classic style there neither modern twist Btw watch out as the place is not super kids friendly
Fantastic experience: Very comfortable, slightly Fawlty Towers bar, added to the charm considerably. Easy access to York and motorways. Stunning pool and spa. Lovely setting, huge breakfasts. Great staff Really well worth it
Fantastic experience: I recently stayed at the Parsonage hotel with some friends to enjoy the luxury spa facilities. The hotel grounds are stunning, and the hotel is full of character. The service was good, and we thoroughly enjoyed eating at The Fat Abbott pub which is conveniently located next door. This is the perfect location to spend some quality time with your family and friends.
Fantastic experience: Came here for a wedding ceremony, absolutely beautiful hotel. I didn't stay in the hotel so I can't comment on the rooms but I didn't hear any complaints from the guests who did stay!
Negative experience: What should be a fantastic hotel is let down by the upkeep of the building. My room had a leak from the ceiling coming intermittently from the room above (hopefully from the sink not the toilet) and wasn't able to address this with the staff when leaving as they were busy dealing with 1 guest who was hit by a light fitting that had fallen down 1 with taps that didn't work
Dear Mr Holmes, This is definitely not the experience you should of had with us at The Parsonage, please contact myself by email on [email protected]
Fantastic experience: We were here for my daughters wedding and stayed just the 1 night after the wedding party. Have to say the staff were fantastic. Very professional and the whole day went smoothly. We had a small suite which was away from the main building and very quiet. Lovely grounds to walk in. Price included use of the spa which we might have taken advantage of had it not been the wedding. Decent choice of breakfast items, again included in the price. Would like to return another time for a relaxing break with spa
Positive experience: I stayed here for a wedding during Summer. The staff are super helpful and courteous and really rather pleasant. The best of the staff was a lovely lady in turquoise that I'd assume is a manager of some sort. She found me and my little one wandering the grounds after leaving the ceremony because of toddler troubles. I was hot as a person fully suited and booted would be on a 28 degree day with a toddler to match. She took us to a nice cool room and got us a cool drink each. Proper professional hospitality stuff and thoroughly appreciated by me! Location is picturesque and the grounds are lovely. Theres a pleasant amount of wildife to greet you in the morning after breakfast. The only gripe I had with my stay was a lack of air conditioning or general temperature control in the rooms. 28 degrees Celsius with no AC is difficult to deal with as an adult but was a bit of a nightmare with a toddler. Outside of the UKs aggressive and random summer it would have been perfect!
Negative experience: I can’t rate the hotel because we only had a day spa experience but unfortunately, it was dirty & dated. The pool area has the potential to be really lovely but needs some investment and a deep clean. Changing rooms were especially below par.
Positive experience: The hotel is located in the nice village of Escrick. I stayed there for a work trip. It is an old period hotel. My room was on top of the bar. The room was okay. I did not have a good night sleep as there were bords making a racket in the early hours of the morning which is not the hotels fault. However, it was a big annoyance. The service from the staff was good. The spa services and gym were very good
Fantastic experience: Spent an enjoyable few days here. Room was clean and comfortable. The room we had was in the coach suit and was quite large, bathroom had a bath and separate shower. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was well cooked and plentiful, buffet style. Evening meal was also well cooked in the Fat Abbot. Idea location south of York very close to the park and ride to York.
Positive experience: Nice place. Rooms are very spacious. The only thing I didn't like, is a very old fashion taps in bathrooms (sinks). One side boiling hot water, on the other ice cold. I understand, there is a reason for that, but it's unpractical.
Positive experience: Would definitely stay again so it was a lovely stay, however, breakfast service on 2 of the 3 days was a bit tardy with waits to be seated, and for crockery and some food items. Also, the room was comfortable and clean but let down by a lack of ventilation in the bathroom meaning some signs of mould had begin on the ceiling above the shower. Spa facilities were great, especially the steam and aromatherapy rooms and the sauna.
Fantastic experience: Beyond excellent. I had a glorious few nights in this magnificent hotel. Peter and Leon looked after me really well and were very accommodating. If you're looking for a classy and tranquil establishment then they don't come any better than this (definitely a solo/couples place).
Positive experience: So often, places are only as good as their staff, and this was no exception. Max, on the evening shift was warm, welcoming, good fun to chat too and had stories to share - an absolute pleasure to meet.
Fantastic experience: Visited the Parsonage as part of a works team event for around 60 colleagues. The facilities and catering were excellent. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and super helpful, helping to make the event a real success. Special mention to Janet and Max behind the bar who were both friendly and professional.
Fantastic experience: We had a lovely break for my husband's birthday. Dinner, bed, breakfast and use of spa facilities. Our stay was Excellent and would definitely recommend to others. The spa facilities are lovely and so relaxing. The food in both the Hotel and The Fat Abbot was delicious. Stand out for us was the team of girls on duty in both the Fat Abbot and the hotel breakfast room. They never stopped and provided excellent service. They are a credit to the Hotel and Restaurant. Will definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: Had a lovely nights stay for my birthday. Booked in for evening meal & breakfast. The Fat Abbot where you have the evening meal was amazing the food was delicious and plentiful, the staff were friendly professional and helpful. Breakfast in the main hotel was self service. A reasonable amount of choice and again the staff were fabulous. We would stay again.
Negative experience: Stayed for 2 nights there last weekend. The hotel was very old style, the rooms needed some investment, would be good if they refurbished them. The bathroom lights were so dim, could not do makeup there definitely. The toilet was dripping, kept us up all night with the noise of dripping water. Most of the staff was young and not very good with communication. The spa and pool was very good, but you have to go out of the hotel to get there which is not very ideal. They did not inform us either the day we were booked in for the restaurant for the dinner. Luckily we did book it ourselves so we didn’t face any problem there, but had we not booked it, we wouldn’t have been able to get in. The food at the restaurant was nice though. Overall the experience was bad. Would rate as: Hotel 1/5 Spa 5/5 Restaurant 4/5
Fantastic experience: I booked this stay as a Christmas present for my girlfriend and it was everything we wanted, stunning grounds, lovely people and the Fat Abbot food was amazing! We would love to come here again as it was that good. Spa facilities were excellent and everywhere felt very clean. Big shout out to Max who ran the bar/front desk Friday night, what a lovely man and made our evening special! (Please pass this on) George & Dina
Positive experience: We came for a spa experience here and there were some great positives. If it were just the hotel it would have been a 5 star review. It was clean and the facilities good, the room was very comfortable and staff lovely. Dinner at the Fat Abbot was very tasty and reasonably priced. Breakfast and afternoon tea were great too. The spa on the other hand was not such a great experience. First of all it was really busy, so we couldn't find anywhere to relax around the pool. I think the hotel and spa should warn you that as check in is at 2pm it is not a great idea to book treatments for the same time. It meant we had to take all our luggage with us to the spa and I don't know why, but they didn't tell us to go straight to the changing rooms and leave our things there, which would have made sense, instead they had us stay in our own clothes for our treatments and lug our bags around, which wasn't relaxing at all. I am sorry to say that the treatments were not great. The head shoulder and neck massage lasted about ten minutes (it was explained to me for longer than it lasted) and I felt zero affect from it. The express pedicure was not really a pedicure in my opinion. It was a cuticle treatment and repolish, so check what is involved before you book. There was nothing done to my feet, no buffing, no creams etc...there were ridges on my nails still..... it was a shame as the rest of the stay was perfect and great value for money. Maybe they are understaffed at the spa, they seemed like really nice people but the atmosphere was very flat and it all felt a bit rushed and half hearted. I visited the spa once before, a while ago, and the experience was much better.
Fantastic experience: Excellent stay at this hotel as part of a large group. Great location for working and on a bus route with a frequent service to take you to York or to Selby and nearby designer outlet. Lovely pool and spa . Food was good and staff were friendly and helpful
Positive experience: Hotel stay, one night. Breakfast Location is great for access to York which is a short car journey away. The room I had was quite small but the establishment is set up well and the facilities are decent. The reception staff were not exactly welcoming, my stay was set up as an account from a travel company and the staff reactions were as if I'd put them out and I was asked to pay up front even though it was on the account. I could not have dinner at the Parsonage pub/restaurant on site as was booked, I do wish I was asked if I would like to make a reservation when I booked in but I wasn't. Hey, wagamama is only up the road at the outlet centre. The shower does make a whining sound when in use. Breakfast was excellent.
Positive experience: Spa break afternoon with a treatment. Amazing massage with a lovely beautician. The pool is lovely and the steam and sauna large and very hot. The decor of the spa is looking a bit tired and could do with a bit of an update.
Positive experience: Hotel is clean and the ‘overnight indulgence’ package, whilst going up in price, is always a winter treat. Thank you to the gentleman in the Spa who suggested we had our afternoon tea first then treatments. Perhaps the receptionist could be a little more welcoming in arrival.
Positive experience: A mixed bag! Rooms are clean and well presented. Hotel overall is pretty, well situated, and quite good value. Service at front desk was curt, and not very welcoming. Service at breakfast was slow, and the breakfast was infrequently refilled despite no plates etc. Checking out, we were made to feel guilty for asking them to honour the price they quoted us, but was their mistake. This was our second visit, and I think sadly it will be our last. Would still recommend it overall, as it's ok value, and quaint, but I'd recommend front of house work on their welcoming and customer-service.
Fantastic experience: My husband and I got married at The Parsonage in Pctober and the whole process was made so much easier with the help and dedication of Louise and Katie. Nothing was too much for them and every question and email was answered thoroughly and quickly. On the days leading up the wedding they were just as helpful and on the day nothing was too much trouble for Janet. The day was perfect and the honeymoon suite was incredible. Thank you to the wedding team at The Parsonage for making our special that much more special and incredibly easy to plan. I'd recommend 100%
Negative experience: Bedrooms are very tired, food in The Fat Abbot is ok but nothing special. This is not a luxury hotel by any means however the staff are friendly and breakfast is nice, lovely fluffy towels and nice warm rooms. It’s more than a short drive into York. .
Negative experience: Just be aware of a lack of compassion at this hotel. I needed to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances and was not offered any refund, I never expected 100% refund, however 50% would have been appreciated for a now ex regular guest. Vanessa who took the call was very pleasant, sales team not so much.......
Fantastic experience: I have a lot of memories here. Many functions and weddings including my own several years ago which price wise was very competitive. The location is lovely and the staff were brilliant. As far as our wedding day was concerned; the event manager looked after us from start to finish. The day went super smoothly and we had a fantastic day with friends and family. Highly recommended.
Negative experience: Quite disappointed given the price. Breakfast was average, buffet style like a premier Inn. Service was mixed, one receptionist was suggesting we travel to another restaurant rather than just order room service? The spa area was nice enough but the men's changing rooms were small and quite dated I wouldn't stay here again.
Fantastic experience: This was our 3rd stay at this lovely, old hotel. We had, in the past, been in an accessible room, but it wasn't quite what was needed. This time we booked a room in the refurbished coach house block. Much, much better. Parking available immediately outside the block. As always food great. Breakfast is a help yourself full English. Which was very good. Service as always, good. Staff very helpful and polite. Will be going again and will definitely ask for the same room. Would recommend.
