Royal George Hotel: Opinions
Positive experience: Beautiful hotel, great location to wander round the center. Staff were lovely. The bed was not comfortable, although room was well presented. No details on room service. Breakfast was not very warm but there was plenty to choose from. Parking - don't attempt to park in the hotel car park, walk down and check for a space, it's down a steep slope and extremely tight to reverse back out of, up hill if full.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful stay over the weekend at the Royal George, staff excellent and particularly Helen at breakfast
Fantastic experience: Lovely Hotel, pleasant staff, catered for me being Ceoiliac.
Fantastic experience: I visited the Royal for Sunday lunch today. It was really good Excellent soup,Excellent roast beef,Excellent cheese and biscuits The service was very good and all of the food came in a timely response. In addition, not only was it a excellent meal the food was very reasonably price Be there again soon
Positive experience: Nice ambience, good sized rooms, friendly staff. Quite limited choice of items for breakfast.
Fantastic experience: Great place for a coffee with helpful and friendly staff.
Positive experience: Was a night away with friends. Good price for B&B. Excellent breakfast, room was comfortable and quiet. Definitely stay again, lovely view from our room.
Positive experience: Parking is a joke. You can stop to take your luggage in and it's first come to park in their carpark if not we had to park a few streets away where it's all night 6pm-8am then you need another ticket so no long lie in. They are traffic wardens patrolling the area. I've a bad hip and it's up stairs to get into the place and it's up another flight of stairs to get to the room ( no lift) carrying the suitcase. The room i was in is the norm but the shower could do with a good clean or renovation. Some mould around the base and brown marks between the shower and WC.??? Rust stains down the wall from the soap dispenser and thick rust build up under the soap dispenser at the wash hand basin. The breakfast and service was good but back up for the luggage and glad it was downhill. Sadly i don't think I'll ever be back in Perth and if I was I'd try and find somewhere with no stairs.
Fantastic experience: Great short visit, very likely to stay again.
Positive experience: Only went to meet friends, there was a wedding on so it was pretty busy. Service was good.
Positive experience: Nice city hotel. Good food. Very Scottish.
Negative experience: Awful nights sleep at this hotel bed was brick hard both woke with really sore backs, room was really dated and needed a good clean, was booked for two nights but left after one, when checking out we told the receptionist that we hadn't slept and the bed was really awful and uncomfortable and her response was 'I know' she then went on to only charge us for the one night but we had paid for two nights upfront response to this was ' ok then bye' just glad we left when we did.
Fantastic experience: Great 2 day trip. Dog friendly and brilliant staff.
Fantastic experience: Very good funeral tea.
Negative experience: Stopped by for food around 8pm. There were two servers working and I made sure dinner service was still going on (they ended up disappearing and I had to go to the bar to get my bill and pay). I got the French onion soup but it was barely lukewarm and tasted like a watered down tomato soup with a few pieces of onion that was heated up in a microwave. The bowl was supposedly 'very' hot.
Negative experience: Came for afternoon tea, with high expectations and after recommendations from family & friends. Sadly, it wasn't great. £20 a head, for 1 small bottle of prosecco (which costs £5 at bar) tea and 1 tier of sandwiches and cakes for 4. We got 2 small fingers of sandwiches each. Some of the crockery and cups were worn and stained - really need to invest in new ones as they seem obsolete. Zero atmosphere, and no check back from the waiting staff. We did ask at the end of the meal if we should have had another tier for the 4 of us, but was told it was all placed onto one stand for us, which we struggled to find that being the honest answer. I don't think it is worth £80 for 4 people, and won't be rushing back soon. Such a shame as I have had great experiences here in the past.
Negative experience: Fantastic staff. But the most uncomfortable bed and pillows I slept in for a long time.. very hard mattress, very thin pillows. But fresh and clean. Still.. definitely not worth £165 per night.
Fantastic experience: A great experience. Beds were very comfortable. Hotel was very authentic and staff were very friendly. Perth is a cute town to explore. The food was also delicious! Get dessert - you won’t regret it!
Positive experience: Having heard great things about the high teas we booked a table for 4 but it turned out to be a very average meal and poor service. The food itself was fine but nothing special . Service was prompt and friendly but the girls hadn't been trained properly . We had to ask for tartar sauce for the fish, clean knifes and fresh napkins.spoons and forks for the meringues. A spoon for the jam . Asked if we wanted cakes and meringues for home and they were wrapped up in tinfoil!. No boxes. Just loads of wee details but it's the details that make the experience good or bad . I've experience of working in hotels and this was just a lack of basic training . First visit and I don't think I'll hurry back .
Positive experience: Short notice booking for one night turned out to be an excellent choice. Friendly, helpful and attentive staff coupled with an excellent breakfast made our stay very pleasant. The hotel is beautifully situated on the riverside right beside an entrance to the North Inch park which is a lovely spot for a riverside walk with or without the dog. We will most definitely be back.
Fantastic experience: I did not stay here, but the staff are nice and the food and drink options in the bar were decent.
Positive experience: Creaky floors and stairs, could definatly do with updating with paint flashing in the bathroom and the smallest in room TV with poor signal. Staff friendly, breakfast buffet was ok but serving dishes were small which meant they regularly ran out. Great value for what I paid, centre of Perth. Parking very limited and tight. Would stay again.
Positive experience: A venerable hotel that displays the coat of arms of the British royal family in the reception since it hosted Queen Victoria. Their breakfast is a true and complete Scottish breakfast. It probably needs updating but I hope it never happens if it's at the expense of losing its old charm.
Fantastic experience: Very nice afternoon tea in sun lounge overlooking Nice gardens and river Excellent staff
Positive experience: we went for Hight Tea food was good and we all enjoyed our choices staff were friendly as well
Positive experience: Meal was nice. Meringues were enormous. Bar prices quite high. Staff service was okay but some staff members were really abrupt.
Negative experience: The staff was nice but the rooms are old and gross. The TV was 19" and all the channels were scrambled / bad reception, most of the windows did not open, the bathroom door did not lock, and the absolute worst part was the beds. They are completely broken down and many years past replacement. When you sit down on them they completely bottom out and you hit the bottom of the support. We complained about the bed at the front desk, so they let us see another room. It was the same. So they let us see a third room, it was even worse. They offered to let us see a 4th room, but we declined. If they're all the same type of bed and the same age we don't expect a different result. How everyone is not complaining about the beds is beyond my understanding. It's not the front desk people's fault so we didn't blame them, it's the owners fault for not updating the rooms. Luckily they let us cancel our reservation and we took our money elsewhere. Too bad.
Fantastic experience: Took my wife for High Tea for her birthday , she enjoyed it immensely, roast beef was lovely as were the selection of cakes. Price is very reasonable, under £40 for two of us . Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good selection on the menu. Will go again. Did not stay in a room but this place is top notch.
Positive experience: Nice hotel and when I arrived very late (due to flight delay), the night porter (Eddie), kindly made me a sandwich as I had missed dinner.
Positive experience: A lovely hotel, and the staff were incredible! They couldn’t do enough to help us, and were so friendly and welcoming.
Fantastic experience: Went for club dinner. Excellent meal and great service in a nice function room.
Negative experience: Returned after several years absence for High Tea. Both occasions been underwhelming. Macaroni was bland and sauce watery. Toast never arrived. The young lad serving needs to learn manners and customer service.
Negative experience: Such a huge disappointment. Certainly not worthy of 3 stars. Underwhelming, and a rather unfriendly, checkin. Staff at dinner couldn’t be bothered to offer me a drink or take my order so after 20mins waiting I gave up and left. Lots of available external eatery options moments from the hotel. Mattress and pillows probably the most uncomfortable I’ve ever slept on (if 3hrs of poor sleep counts!) and room (23) dirty, tired, and badly in need of significant renovation but at least the bathroom was good, fresh, and there was plenty of hot water! The only positive was that the wonderful breakfast team were chatty, happy, and welcoming. Thank goodness as otherwise this would have been a one star review…. I’d certainly never consider this place again. Trading on what has been an exciting history but now well past its sell by date. Little surprise that nobody appears willing to buy it having been on the market since 2019. At that point it seems investment may well have stopped! There are so many much, much, better places to stay in/around Perth so caution advised.
Fantastic experience: Hotel was great staff rooms food amazing only down fall is parking nightmare
Fantastic experience: Had an overnight stay in the George, would recommend a visit..very central to everything you need in Perth..
Fantastic experience: Truly stunning. Steeped in history. Superb staff, great food (especially the High Teas) and can cater for gluten free diners.
Negative experience: Staff were lovely, but by god the restaurant was awful and extortionate, £18 pounds for uncooked £1 oven chips a plasticky steak pie which more like a steak slice and uncooked carrots, rooms were cold and depressing although clean, not enough parking for the hotel. Okay bar. The buffet breakfast was mildly disappointing too but not bad
Positive experience: Only had a meal, didn't stay overnight.
Fantastic experience: I stayed here for work and the hotel was lovely etc. The staff in general were very helpful etc. There was one exception.. the lady who hosted breakfast. She was very lovely, helpful and kind. She made the stay extra special and breakfast very welcoming.
Fantastic experience: Hi ladies and gents what a great gem of a find in Perth let's begin our experience beautiful situated clear view across the River Tay parking facilities not a lot first come only parking spaces 6 outside the hotel pay as you go only 1hour stays then you must leave for 1hour not conducive to good parking but on a more positive aspect npc car facilities 500 yards away also if you are a blue badge holder all parking outside the hotel is free ok onto the hotels facilities entrance 9 or 10 stairs to the entrance on a slip mat excellent and rails on meeting staff most welcoming plesent and concise with all things regarding your stay up to our room first floor on enteryring first enpresions lovely clean big bed very comfortable en suite bath magic not the biggest TV but hey the views are to die for next morning breakfast absolutely excellent even better the lady that is looking after you brilliant overall this is a brilliant place to stay location saff price 80pounds for 2 a night what's not to like except the parking
Positive experience: The decor is drab and depressing, and needs some serious work, the shower didn't move and since it was directed at the wall it required some gymnastics. The walls are not sound proof, so I was lucky the neighbours were quiet. No elevator, so not great for elderly or disabled. Rooms are large but cold. There is a bible but no hairdryer. But the breakfast compensated for everything. The lady who was serving it was absolutely delightful. Super caring and just very sweet. The bar staff were nice too.
Fantastic experience: We stayed here Hogmanay 2023 for 3 nights. Our first time at this hotel and it will not be our last. We had an excellent time throughout our stay. All meals were first class, and the staff excellent (especially Helen) who went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and pleasurable. She is a credit to the Hotel. Jeanette
Positive experience: Lovely wee hotel! Staff helpful friendly. Breakfast was fabbydooh. Interior decor lovely!
Fantastic experience: Great Christmas lunch today at the Royal George. Food and service was excellent.
Negative experience: I would never recomend this hotel! There are rooms with a step which is almost invisible, be carefull! The thing is, I fell very badly over this step, hurting my hand and back. Almost three months later I am still under medical treatment and in pain. The General Manager was not helpfull at all, he never showed an understanding attitude and I am still waiting his answer yo my e-mail. In my opinion a touristic company should attend these kind of problems, specially if they have been caused by the hotel. I am sure, I was not the first nor the last person who fell.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful hotel, almost quaint. Old style wooden features. Gorgeous conservatory overlooking the river. Food was exceptional. Will definitely stay here again.
Positive experience: Stayed here last night, room was ok, nothing special, shower was poor, lukewarm and difficult to control. The cooked breakfast while tasty was cold, the buffet style containers that keep the items warm were quite frankly inadequate. Little to no parking on site, we used a nearby car park and walked. Maybe 5 minutes away. Good central location, nice bar area with friendly and attentive staff. We would return.
Positive experience: Lovely clean basic room, only stayed for one night but buffet breakfast was faultless, staff friendly, location perfect
Positive experience: Don't know much about rooms or service was only there for a wedding
Positive experience: It's a shame there's no lift as we were right at the top of the hotel. Otherwise, staff were very helpful and obliging, room was brilliant once you'd climbed the 48 steps to get there and the food was really good.
Fantastic experience: I recently stayed at the Royal George from 15-21 October 2023. The hotel is lovely, traditional and the staff are very warm, friendly and helpful The food was very well done and plentiful and they catered to my vegan diet. I had a wonderful stay and would definitely stay again. I would say that the only drawback was no lift. Currently not a problem for me but somewhat of a challenge for those with mobility issues.
Fantastic experience: Unique hotel with a lot of history. Loved the design and decor. Eddie, who worked overnight, was absolutely incredible! He definitely made the night, was very knowledgeable, and provided great conversation. He was also very accommodating with making my wife (a picky drinker) a delicious drink.
Fantastic experience: First time here. went for afternoon tea. Gorgeous place. Great staff and marvellous tea. Will come again. the High tea looked tempting. Sunday roast looked good too. excellent.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place. Staff very friendly. Roberta, was excellent in her customer service, meticulous uniform and friendly manner. Food was great too. Definitely be back
Fantastic experience: Lovely views of the Tay from the room. Really comfortable with spacious bathroom. Update. Breakfast was excellent. Staff throughout the hotel were really helpful and friendly. Queen Victoria stayed in 1848, hence the Royal in the name
Positive experience: On arrival, we were told that the car park was full due to a conferance. Even though the car park sign said residents only. This meant we had to find alternative parking. This is not easy in Perth, as most parking is 4 hours max. This is nothing to do with the hotel, its the way city is. We found a car park on Canal Street, which is quite a distance away. It was a maximum of 10 hours. But this does not include 6 pm to 8 pm when it is free. The staff were really nice. Our room was at the front of the hotel, and the view of the river was a bonus. Breakfast is excellent and the staff were brilliant.
Fantastic experience: Traditional Scottish Hotel. High tea worth experiencing. Staff very friendly.
Positive experience: Lovely old hotel full of character and history. Room was very clean and well set out. Bed very comfy. Must make special mention about the staff. Every one of them was cheerful and so helpful. Thank you for making our stay so memorable.
Positive experience: We didn’t stay here but merely popped in for a drink at the end of a busy day in Perth. The bar area provided a very comfortable place to sit and relax with a drink from the handsome selection of gins on offer! It’s obviously quite a busy and popular hotel as there was quite a bustle of coming and going and plenty of staff on hand to help. Decor was opulent and cosy with tartans and even a grand piano in the bar!
Positive experience: Twin beds pushed together, hence hard boarder down the middle of bed,en suite toilet was squashed into a corner just fitted into space to use toilet, but room was clean ,staff was very pleasant, food was excellent xx
Fantastic experience: Had a party of 24 there after a visit to the falkirk wheel.we had a wonderful high tea, scones, meringues etc,the service and staff were all first class.we will certainly return.thanks to everyone at the Royal george
Positive experience: We didn't stay unfortunately, we were there for a wake. But it looks very nice, staff very friendly
Negative experience: Room: outdated, mold in the shower, dirty carpet Parking: limited Staff: good communication
Positive experience: Charming traditional hotel. Loads of character and exceptionally friendly service. Genuinely helpful people who didn't trot out the script you often get from chains. Particular thanks to Victoria and the breakfast team for a cheery start to the day.
Positive experience: Only had food , but was very tasty and staff lovely
Positive experience: Part of my dad's 95th birthday present was a voucher to use in the Royal George - first time I have been there for over 40 years - have to say in the public areas were much as I remember. We had lunch - simple menu - quick service - good views over to the Tay. Small car park to rear access from George Street. My old dad enjoyed his lunch so what more can I say - there was even a red carpet rolled out - though I don't think just for him !
Fantastic experience: My husband and I had our wedding reception at the hotel - the staff were lovely and the food was great - would highly recommend - a perfect end to a perfect day - thank you
Positive experience: Access for disabled people is badly restricted at the river side of the hotel. Being an old building access to some of the various facilities was also restricted. I was at a funeral purvey in a room where access to the buffet was by climbing up some stairs with nothing to hang on to such as a hand rail. I would have thought bringing the food and the tea and coffee to the tables would have been better. It's in a beautiful setting beside the river but unfortunately the view is restricted. However there is not much the hotel can do about that as it's outwith their control
Fantastic experience: Absolutely fabulous, loved my stay and if you need anything at night just speak to Eddie, what a lovely person will help with anything you need, even take you back to your room, thought I didn't have my key, but did was in my jacket but didn't mind, give him a five star.
Positive experience: The Royal Gee is old school. It's in the heart of the City opposite the Tay. It's a 3 star hotel with friendly staff. The room I had was basic and clean. It was visited by Royalty back in the day but they'd have to step up a gear to host King Charles III today. B'fast was just OK. It was a hot & cold buffet. Sadly the bacon was swimming in grease, sausages anemic and eggs congealed. Quite well staffed which is unusual given the staffing crisis in hospitality. Free onsite parking too if you're lucky enough to get a spot.
Fantastic experience: Attended a birthday party, staff were lovely and very helpful, venue had beautiful views over the river and the buffet lunch was tasty and well presented. What a lovely and relaxed way to spend an afternoon.
Fantastic experience: We loved the location of the hotel which was very convenient and in the city centre of Perth. We loved the view from the windows, as we were having our breakfast. Spacious and clean rooms!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic. Lovely quiet, clean and friendly hotel.
Positive experience: Room could have been cleaner failed the finger test on the edge of pictures and fittings (Dust). Otherwise room was comfortable and shower was great.
Positive experience: Stayed overnight, the room was clean and comfortable, although a little cold, bedsheets were torn and marked , bathroom door could not be closed due to a broken catch, ironing board was in the wardrobe but no iron also no hairdryer, was told you have to ask at reception if you wanted them , food was good for evening meal and a buffet breakfast in the morning. TV has very limited channels, WiFi is good and available in all areas of the hotel , password has to be asked for as it is changed often
Fantastic experience: Was there with a church group for coffee, tea was a great service and came with lovely homemade shortbread. Staff were lovely and attentive. Sat in the conservatory with lovely views over the River Tay.
Positive experience: Went for Hogmanay dinner and dance, the food was good, smoked duck slices were moist and tasty, the melon in whisky sabayon was fantastic, the Aberdeen Angus steak was a big bit of beef and cooked perfectly, the venison was also a treat. We both went for the cheesecake which was good but not as good as the rest. If you like craft beer hotels don’t seem to have got the message yet, had Deuchars IPA as only non lager choice. We were at a table for 8 and luckily the company was good for the night. The band was 3 guys, 2 guitars and a lead singer but played a variety of music to dance to. Slightly spoiled by technical issues made up for by a piper playing. Plenty of floor space for dancing even with almost 100 attending. A good time had by all.
Positive experience: Had a good night, food was good and so was the service Just a pity the live band were not good. The piper was excellent.
Fantastic experience: beautiful victorian style hotel :) i stayed in chinese suite and i loved it :) staff very friendly :) i also enjoyed breakfast and coffee woth a view of the river
Positive experience: Went to Christmas party night. Staff were great, food was good. But for a party night it was quite boring unfortunately. Need some new ideas for next year I think.
Fantastic experience: We had a family Christmas lunch/ birthday celebration at Royal George, the staff were superb, they friendly, and efficient, can’t fault them, The menu had a good choice of starters, mains, & deserts. Will definitely go back
Positive experience: Fantastic hotel but the room was looking tired ,needing decorating and better furniture. The view from the bedroom good looking over the river, have stayed there a few times
Positive experience: Clean rooms, lovely old building with a feeling of stepping back in time. Staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. Bathroom could do with something other than a shower curtain which stick to you when trying to have a shower as over the bath and very narrow.
Negative experience: Christmas dinner? Nice prawn dish to start, completely tasteless turkey, 1/3 sausage wrapped in something fatty, 2 sprouts and 3 small bits of carrot, potato was nice. Christmas pudding lovely. All in all a waste of time. Service good though.
Positive experience: We've stayed there on numerous occasions, although some area's are looking abit tired / used its still a decent hotel, like many hotels staffing levels are not what they should be and that definitely showed on a few occasions, on 1 of our days breakfast was less than poor, Management accepted this and remedied this the following morning
Negative experience: Bathroom has black mold in corners of tub. The ceiling over the shower also has black mold on crown mounding. Curtains are very dusty. Am on a package tour so had to stay. But would not recommend this place to anyone
Positive experience: Stay here once a year to visit family as my wife and I stay in states.rooms are perfect and you cant be location and the staff are excellent. The only down side was the breakfast.Everythng is served in bay marie containers and my wife and I were very disappointed as everything was either cold or hard with being in so long unlike previous 4 years when it was all fresh cooked I do hope they change this because we are not sure if we will stay again next year
Fantastic experience: Had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend the breakfast was lovely great selection of food , room was really big with a nice large bathroom. The view of the river was so lovely.
Positive experience: While location is nice parking a nightmare had to cancle our stay which we was really looking forward to because lack of hotel parking and you had to park away from hotel and pay which didnt get refunded for or reflect in the hotel price
Positive experience: Stayed a number of times and love the place. It has a lovely feel of faded grandeur. Some of the rooms need a bit of an update but are clean and comfortable. In a beautiful spot overlooking the river.
Fantastic experience: Rooms are a bit dated however beautiful hotel nice staff and great location
Fantastic experience: Lovely old hotel, clean basic room, we had a lovely view over the river. I personally think they overprice the rooms when the rewind festival is on.
Positive experience: Rooms a bit tired. Shower pressure and temperature poor. Great location and very friendly, helpful staff. I would recommend for an overnight stay, but not a lengthy stay
Fantastic experience: Enjoyed a High Tea for 3 - fantastic chips, and scrumptious meringues! Pleasant and attentive staff. Nice views of the River Tay too. Loved it.
Positive experience: Lovely old fashioned hotel in Perth. Great big room with fab views over the river Tay. Very friendly staff and service. Car park is tight if you've got a big car!
Fantastic experience: Historic, quality hotel in an excellent city-centre location. Excellent, comfortable accommodation. Superbly comfortable beds. Friendly, professional staff who go out of their way to help guests enjoy their stay. Breakfast is now a buffet but the quality is still good and you can still request a pot of tea, a cafetiere of coffee, poached eggs and so on.
Fantastic experience: I've only eaten at The Royal George..always great service and food. Lovely views over the Tay..Beautiful building and interior.. Definitely a place to visit.
Positive experience: Probably the best in town hotel. Its dated but quaint. The staff are very accomadation and the place has a friendly feel to it. Small gym which is good, but parking can be a problem.
Fantastic experience: Missed our bus after theatre so went to Royal George for tea and shortbread. Very helpful staff, excellent shortbread, very comfortable and relaxing 50 minutes until next bus.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful hotel. Staff very friendly and always happy to assist. Great food in the restaurant too. Look forward to returning one day very soon.
