Nuffield Health Preston Fitness and Wellbeing Centre: Opinions
Negative experience: Outdated equipment yet £62 a month
Fantastic experience: A fantastic array of equipment and facilities to exercise and relax. Very helpful and supportive employees.
Positive experience: I love this gym. The pool is amazing. The spa area is great too but is showing signs of wear and tear. In a past life, I’d have given this place 5 stars. However, as I’m now disabled, I’m looking at it with new eyes. The disabled facilities are abysmal. The poolside changing room (single) is disgraceful. It’s usually wet. Puddles of water in the toilet/shower as well as the extremely hot teeny tiny changing room. I’ve never known it to be not wet. It doesn’t have the water extractor for swim clothes. There is nowhere to sit down to dry your hair. Not enough room for a carer and yourself. There is a lift to get to the regular changing rooms but it’s situated as far away as physically possible from the entrance. Lastly, the food/drink bar has drastically reduced its offerings. Oh, and before I forget, the beauty salon is no more. Other than that, I still love the staff and the gym which saw its glory days when it was a Virgin gym and the fees were a lot less but I used to get a lot more. Nevermind! It’s the best place in Preston.
Positive experience: I joined Nuffield Preston with the hope of finding not just a gym, but a community; I’ve found exactly that and more. From day one, I’ve been impressed by the supportive environment and the dedicated staff who go above and beyond to ensure members feel welcome and motivated. Jack has been instrumental in helping me refine my training techniques. His knowledge, patience, and genuine interest in my progress have made a world of difference in my fitness journey. Likewise, Joe’s positive attitude and attention to detail have been invaluable. He’s proactive in adjusting workout plans to suit individual goals, and his enthusiasm makes training sessions both productive and enjoyable. While the gym has a comprehensive range of facilities and spacious training areas, some aspects of the facilities leave room for improvement. Equipment maintenance and general upkeep have been an issue on several occasions, and feedback about these concerns seems to go overlooked. This is disappointing, as it detracts from what is otherwise a great environment to train in. Nuffield Preston is still a good gym, with fantastic staff and a welcoming atmosphere, but it’s clear that it is in need of some much-needed TLC to match its potential. With attention to the issues raised, it could truly excel as a premier fitness space.
Positive experience: Having been a member for over 10 years, I can honestly say that not much has changed. For a 'premium' health club that charges premium prices (with the usual yearly price hikes), we're starting to wonder whether it's worth keeping our family membership (4 users). Over the years, there’s been little investment that I’ve noticed - I've been with Nuffield since well before they took over Virgin Active. Many of the machines are still the same, or haven’t been updated in a while. There are also ongoing issues in the changing rooms, like missing hair dryers every so often or soap dispensers in the showers that don’t work. On the plus side, the staff I’ve interacted with have always been friendly and welcoming. However, more than once, when I’ve been up on the gym floor, I’ve been asked if I'm a member and had to show my card - though it’s been a while since that last happened. Cleanliness of the locker rooms + shower area is also a hit and miss. I don't have any personal experience with the classes, but I have some positive feedback about the children's pool and N Stars Nursery Area, although the latter requires additional payment after certain number of hours. Overall, it’s starting to feel like the club’s standards haven’t quite kept up with the prices.
Fantastic experience: Lovely clean place. A bit expensive but enjoyable place to go. Lots to do depending on how energetic you feel.
Positive experience: Nice gym, not too busy, good selection of equipment and classes.
Negative experience: More 2.5 out of 5. I used to be a member when it was Virgin Active and got a free pass to check out Nuffield as unable to do my normal workout routine at mo due to niggling injuries. How they can justify charging £60 on a 12 month contract or £76 on a rolling is a joke and taking the p*ss. This gym is very tired looking, it has not been upgraded at all. The lockers still use padlocks, the gym looks tired along with some of the weights needing replacing. The jacuzzi area needs a freshen up. The pool needs to be better organised, seems to prioritise families- they should offer adult only pool times and then family times/adult times shared. Paying the going price for this gym is not advisable. They need to renovate and upgrade in a big way and the sooner they do this the better!
Negative experience: Not worth the money. This gym is part of my Nuffield membership and I only use it when I have work in Preston thankfully. It's always fully of children in both the pool and weight areas. It's tired and run down the weights all have rubber peeling off them and the rubber flooring moves as you walk across it.
Negative experience: Gone down hill significantly and will never rejoin. Full of bureaucracy and internal politics. Gym equipment is always damaged and in a lot of places worn out and a clean in places wouldn't be so bad. Requested if my membership could be transferred to my partner and it was refused, everything seems hard work and not a place of leisure I wouldn't be surprised if it's on the wind down.
Positive experience: Very clean swimming pool and ample parking. The gym facilities are within standard and nothing extra hence 4 stars
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, friendly staff, and a nice relaxed vibe overall
Fantastic experience: Always a friendly welcome, with the best pool and gym facilities in the region.
Positive experience: Just dropped in to get some information on pricing and timing of the activities and was shown round . Very helpful staff and a good facility.
Negative experience: Would not recommend if you’re someone who uses free weights. Equipment was falling apart, squat racks arms were locked in place so couldn’t get a full depth. Went on a free day pass, manager who ‘showed us around’ couldn’t have been less enthusiastic, just pointed in the direction of the changing rooms and left. All around an awful experience, the fact this gym is £50 a month is laughable.
Fantastic experience: I visit Nuffield Gyms regularly as a member and travel a lot with work. Preston is the cleanest, has the best facilities, including 25m pool and the friendliest staff. The cafe is a great place to work, chill and treat yourself to some down time after your workout (or in some cases instead of the workout!)
Negative experience: Complained about male member of staff harassing me then after started to be subjected to intimidating behaviour from some members including being followed around the gym, locker room, sauna etc. People waiting outside as I was entering/leaving the gym. Was even followed by a car whilst I was on foot walking from the building. Ultimately had my locker broken into nothing was taken but I'd had enough and cancelled membership. Moral of the story seems to be don't complain.
Fantastic experience: Super health club - best pool in the area by a long way
Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere and Pt trainer Mel a must for her classes and personal PT sessions, great to see an old face James who is now on the gym floor. I also use the pool and spa facilities and have no hesitation in recommending this health centre
Negative experience: Gym facilities need a huge update as do the changing rooms, gets so busy in the pool area at times that you can't enjoy yourself. Not for me.
Negative experience: A joke for a gym!!! They close early and don’t even bother to update there website!! I can understand closing early on Christmas and new year but any other days is taking the pisss Gym is about fitness commitment and routine which this gym cares nothing about Joke !!! You need to sort your hours out close to as to early
Fantastic experience: First session at Nuffield Preston for my partner and I and I have to say what fantastic customer service from the lovely lady on the reception desk. Nothing was too much. Great first impression. Great facilities and fantastic spa pool we can't wait to return
Fantastic experience: Great place to keep fit and swim. Friendly helpful staff who go the extra mile
Negative experience: Misleading information about free trial, turned up only to be strong armed into signing a contract without being able to try the gym. Unhelpful front desk. Overpriced and outdated equipment/facilities.
Positive experience: Lovely swim, steam and bubble. Feeling very relaxed now. The spa pool is looking a bit tired though.
Positive experience: Havent used all the classes/equipment. I attend a physio group there which is very comfortable atmosphere, I have used the pool too. I use the slow lane, but sometimes, when theres a few of us using the lane, you can feel rushed and anxious
Positive experience: Nice gym but when any facility breaks, it remains unfixed, i.e. family shower at men's, the hanger is broken for ages and i don't think they ever do.
Negative experience: Too expensive for what it is. The tour I had wasn’t all that great. I felt rushed and it was more about me signing a 12 month contract. There wasn’t really a personal feel so I decided to pay the £10 more a month and sign with the Marriott Health Club which gave a very personal and warm feeling as soon as I stepped through the door.
Fantastic experience: Really nice gym ️♂️
Positive experience: Been coming here since January. Initially it was great, however I feel I was drawn in by the pool, spa, and the fantastic classes that are run in the gym. The staff are great and so welcoming, but the equipment and the space itself just needs a huge update. Most of the equipment is old and run down, and the fact there’s only one deadlifting platform is a shame. Nuffield has an incredible space and it’s just not being used to it’s full potential. Considering how much the gym actually costs in comparison to others in the area, it’s surprising that the gym itself isn’t more up to date and upmarket. I will continue to come until my contract runs out as the spa is brilliant after a workout, but it’s not something I would stay for.
Fantastic experience: It’s great here, staff are friendly, gym & pool area are also both very clean.
Negative experience: Gym interior is very old and they have made no effort to replace it. The staff are very dull especially the managers, one of the male managers is very condescending and very inappropriate.
Positive experience: Clean tidy facility, good atmosphere
Positive experience: It's absolutley not a 1 star gym, but I can understand the issues raised by people as having been a member for a long time from before it was Nuffield. The staff are friendly and the cafe is a great asset to have, but the cleaning regime is not up to scratch recently. Congealed sweat on equipment and dirt/dust mix isn't a good look. I thought this was a one off, but seems to be now a regular thing. Kind of feels the gym is resting on it's laurels in this regard, especially as it seems much busier even at off-peak time than I can remember. Let's just say I wouldn't be cutting it as much slack if I was signing up to pay £55 p/m. UPDATE: Sept 2023 - Cleaning seems to have improved
Fantastic experience: Great group classes...friendly and talented instructors
Fantastic experience: My favourite Nuffield health
Positive experience: A bit run down, needs a good clean. Gym instructors are nice, classes are good. They keep closing the sauna and turning off the air on to save money.
Negative experience: Very old interior. Swimming pool is small. Spa facilities look like they have not been renovated in ca. 20 years. Sales rep loves their job a bit too much as well. David Lloyd is far superior.
Fantastic experience: Good gym, lot better then the Bolton branch. Clean and tidy
Fantastic experience: Amazing joint pain class. Katrina was so supportive and helpful
Negative experience: The gym equipment is extremely poorly maintained. Not what you'd expect for a premium gym with a £53 per month membership fee. I've been a member (soon to be a former member) for 23 years and the equipment in the gym today (May 2023) is the same equipment that was there when I first joined. The lack of investment by Nuffield is all too obvious and from a recent conversation with the management, that is not going to change in the foreseeable future. One notable positive for the gym is the trainer Inny, a really inspirational trainer who motivates everybody in his classes.
Negative experience: Pre Covid this was a fab gym, but since then they did away with discounted memberships unless with Vitality, have facilities closed all the time and very out dated equipment. Customer service has declined massively - Its a shame as so many other gyms with a more modern approach are popping up with better value :(
Positive experience: The spa is working now ... well, it was just missing water ... just wish they woukd enforce the towel in the sauna rule... benches are soaked in other people's sweat that makes it stink ... ... oh, and no hose to wash the seat in the steam room ...
Negative experience: Basic, old machinery, spa and jacuzzi shut and they still increased the monthly fee halfway through my contract. Not worth the price, if you decided to increase the fee, at least make the facilities available!
Fantastic experience: Cater for everything you need...
Negative experience: The reason I’m a member of this gym is the pool. When I first joined the pool was managed very well with a fast, medium and slow lane for regular swimmers. Now it seems the management is only interested in kid’s swimming classes as this has been reduced to 2 lane’s which at busy times are often packed. Today I wanted to swim and there was only one dedicated lane which was busy with people of all abilities. At least the kids had 80% of the pool to themselves. I gave up after a few lengths stuck behind some old lady. I have spoken to many other members who are serious swimmers who hold the same opinion. Maybe time to find somewhere new.
Positive experience: Good facilities in the gym, disappointing the jacuzzi was not working but the sauna and steam room were great.
Fantastic experience: Great gym great staff so many facilities .
Fantastic experience: Excellent place , people , service . Neat clean and well maintained. All instructors and classes well organised , excellent and approachable . Easy to use app.
Negative experience: Signed up for the free pass.. got there had no padlock for lockers (wasn't told to bring one) once In the gym left to my own devices.. couldn't work any of the machines (no one about to ask) so had a quick swim. Looking forward to the steam & sauna - SHUT ! needless to say I will not be going again
Fantastic experience: Great facilties
Positive experience: It's OK. Fitness equipment, changing rooms etc haven't changed since first built (Virgin gym).
Negative experience: I called customer services asking for day pass and was told it was 10£ to get in. I explained it’s a few of us and he said he would speak to his manger and back to me. He then came back to me saying sorry it’s a members only club. I was disappointed, as this was the only club nearby our hotel, so I called again. I said what about 2 of us. He said that’s not a problem and to come. Once I arrived at the gym (and paid approx 9£ for Uber) they had somehow changed thier mind and we could go in. I was not happy at all so I am 100% first time in my life giving bad review. This gym has very bad customer service Mr Luck was not helpful. He had a bad attitude and seemed unhappy to see someone from London in the gym.
Negative experience: ALL Nuffield gyms have turned off their jacuzzi/spa's to save energy and as a result the entire area stinks of stagnant water (the preston capitol centre at least) If I wasn't in a contract I would have left.
Fantastic experience: Front desk staff very friendly and helpful.
Negative experience: Friendly staff but the place could do with a refurbishment and updated equipment.
Fantastic experience: Not my usual gym. Preston Nuffield was the closest to where I was staying for a short break. Great staff plenty of gym equipment and hats off to James who was very welcoming helpful and eager to ensure you had the greatest experience.
Positive experience: The gym is overall very good. Some equipment needs some maintenance or replacement now. Spa area is good too. Some of the decisions made for Autumn/Winter 2022/23 are puzzling. Little pool in the spa area is being switched off now to help reduce the cost of energy. Very unpopular decision.
Positive experience: I attend swimming lessons here. I'm amazed every time I go down the steps to the pool I don't slip and injure myself, the layout is daft. The pool is also really cold
Fantastic experience: Excellent staff clean and well maintained and very helpful. Nicky has helped me so much to feel fitter and healthier. Still as fabulous.
Negative experience: It would have been a 5 Star up until today, when they sent an email out saying they are shutting the Spa down for the Autumn and Winter months because it is expensive to run. I have just signed up for a year's membership but if they don't do a U-turn within a week, I'll be cancelling my membership. I heard at least 10 people saying the same thing earlier. This will backfire on them.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic fertility with great staff
Positive experience: I love this gym, there are great classes and equipment. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Nstars is the best aspect though, my 6 year old loves going and begs to go all of the time.
Negative experience: Place falling to bits all free weights plastics have sharp edges,The gym needs a CAREtaker bits off doors lying on floor ,firedoors dont close. Rust all over banisters leading downstairs. Could make a carry on film at this place. Nuffield answer? I pay 29 pounds a month its not worth it.
Positive experience: Temporarily closed on a regular basis. I personally fre the gym is over priced. Infant pool needs renovating and the pool area isn’t the cleanest
Negative experience: Equipment from the 90s rusting. Buckets placed around the gym every time it rains. They posted on Instagram them cleaning the sauna area like it was an event. SURELY IT SHOULD BE CLEANED EVERYDAY. algae around taps and sinks . Apparently they listen and act to complaints. Act or respond to this complaint then......
Fantastic experience: Great place. Clean and resourced well.
Fantastic experience: Had a lovely morning, great swim, with different lanes for everybody's ability and preference. Spa was fab, steam room, sauna and amazing jacuzzi/ whirlpool with integrated longe beds and massage showers. Even got an ice bucket shower if you dare!!!
Fantastic experience: Amazing one-to-one swimming lessons, my child has progressed at an incredible speed with Charlotte’s expert help.
Fantastic experience: 1 week down, 11 to go. So far so good, all positive!
Negative experience: Has to be seen to be believed .no wonder they don`t do trial days .really dated. The place is so DIRTY .zero investment
Negative experience: Dirt everywhere. Really old shabby equipment.zero cleaning being done . Algae on stairs to pool. Sauna is grim needs some management.EVERY PERSON PAYS A DIFFERENT MONTHLY .FROM 25 TO 50 POUNDS .Three day trial was enuff
Fantastic experience: Really quite like this place. It’s a full on gym with all the usual equipment and plenty of it was on top of that a very nice swimming pool plus health spa area and even a separate pool for small kids with an adult to go in. There is a subscription which is around about medium priced but without you get access to all of the classes that go on weekly you just need to book and then turn up. There’s also swimming lessons available for your children and I believe you don’t have to be a member of the gym to take part in the swimming lessons but they are slightly higher priced if you are not a member. The other good thing with swimming lessons is every so often they hold a gala on the weekends which allows all kids of all abilities to feel included and have a very slight competitive swimming gala with medals. There’s a lovely sitting area to have coffee or sandwich or a healthy snack, there’s also Internet access which is free whether you are a member or not (so if you’re just visiting and dropping off your children for swimming lessons you can sit there quite happily and do a little bit of work while they swim) Plenty of parking too!
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym
Positive experience: Love this gym! The classes are fab and the staff are literally so nice.
Negative experience: Not worth the price at all! Says immediate cancellation too but that's not the case. People paying half the price I am for the same facilities? The equipment is awful, cheap and gym in need of massive improvement. There are literally 4 benches, 2 squat racks, 1 Smith machine, and 2 bench press machines which is a joke for the price you pay. Gets really cramped for space, lack or equipment and have made 0 changes in the past 3 years has really run down. Definitely not worth the price you pay at all and do not recommend.
Fantastic experience: Had a nice swim in the pool, 1.2M all the way.
Negative experience: Given the HUGE number of swimming lessons at the weekends and between 16.00 and 19.30 each week day, if you are a serious swimmer....I'd think twice if you are joining for the pool. That said I went during the day this week and again swimming lessons and the fact there were single length breast strokers in the medium lane and a medium swimmer in the fast lane slowing things down, basically meant there were 4 slow lanes out of the 4 lanes available. ( Mind you only 2 available on a week night before 19.00 / 19.30) Perhaps, the lifeguarding staff should be more proactive in the managing the lanes.
Fantastic experience: Okay
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym. Not only are the facilities first class but the staff are genuinely friendly. There's a great cafe to chill. Only downside is that it closes by 10pm which is not always ideal for a night bird like myself
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym, excellent facilities!
Fantastic experience: Best gym I've signed up for in Preston and I've been a member of a fair few! Their facilities are incredible, well kept and the members and staff are the friendliest of any gym I've attended which makes for a really nice vibe. Gets the full 5 star from me. I will say it can be expensive over £50 a month I believe however you can get discounts with work schemes or if you know PTs there
Negative experience: It's a shame that you can't buy one Day pass.
Positive experience: Great pool, though not much space for more than 1 swimmer per lane. I was too slow for the middle lane and too fast for the slow lane & got chucked out of both, ending up in the slow lane and overtaking the other swimmer there who wasn't happy with me. Lovely clean pool, steam room, showers & changing rooms but VERY disappointed no tumble drier any more - what are you supposed ti do with a dripping swimsuit now???
Fantastic experience: Fitness Relaxation pihenést Egy helyen probáld ki és hiszel benne
Positive experience: Great thanks
Negative experience: Lot of money to train we should be encouraging people to get fit health at them prices. Not good JD gym offer the best package ive seen by far
Fantastic experience: I truly love it! Until recently I have never been a big gym goer prefering to pursue alternative exercise methods. However, the facilities are great, unless you are into ball or racket sports, the staff are fantastic and there is a real sense of community.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant gym, classes and atmosphere
Fantastic experience: Excellent pool... Ozone sterilisation rather than chlorine, which is far less likely to sing your eyes, and less chlorine smells!
Fantastic experience: Back to their best. welcome back.
Negative experience: Just called the Preston site to enquire about paying for a day pass to see if I like the facilities as I’ve been with my current gym for just over 2 years but miss the pool and sauna only to be told I can only come in with a member? Despite the website saying there are free passes available subject to managers discretion, all I can say is you guys must be doing fantastically well to not want to accommodate a potential customer that’s more than happy to pay to try your facilities.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, lots of room to work out. Great personal trainers who are always on hand to ask questions. Pool and spa are always kept clean and there are plenty of showers available.
Positive experience: Great , spacious, clean gym. Swimming pool is a really good size. Sauna and steam rooms are nice , kids pool with slide is great. Only issues are the classes. All the classes seem to be full and have waiting lists due to covid and restricted numbers. They need to run more classes to cater for the demand. Yoga and spin classes especially seem to get booked up well in advance.
Fantastic experience: The Best Swimming pool in Preston..
Fantastic experience: I love this place.
Fantastic experience: Joint pain programme is excellent and reasonably priced
Fantastic experience: Amazing place
Fantastic experience: Go 3 times a week, staff always friendly and helpful. The gym is always clean and well presented.
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym and facilities
