Positive experience: Nice hotel, bar area and spa are great, had a room in the main hotel and it was a bit tired, bed was a standard double so felt small. Great stay and walking distance to the town centre.

Fantastic experience: What a find! Great location for the City's attractions,friendly attentive staff,good food and a comfortable bed...and the added benefit of onsite parking.Didn't get time to use the Spa so can't comment on that facility.

Fantastic experience: if you follow GOOGLE MAP's recommendation, you will walk to hotel through some ladders. When you have big luggage , it's painful. The rest are all good for us.

Positive experience: Our room was disgusting. It looked like a very cheap and tacky way of decorating a room. I know it is an old mill but the decor was nothing more than cheap planks of wood, not even finished with varnish. No towel rail in the bathroom, no drawers just planks for shelves. If I had not seen my friends room, we would not have stayed. The staff, the location and the food were excellent, but I am loathed as to if I want to stay there again. We have stayed before and loved it. What happened, you have made it cheap and tacky. Our room was 406. Mrs Brenda Kelly.

Positive experience: Pros 10 minutes walk from the Christmas markets and 5 from the start of the shops. Room clean. Hotel nice inside. Breakfast basic but ok. Tea and coffee in rooms but no option for soya milk so take your own. Pool nice but hot tub small so wasn’t able to use it as more than 5 people in and it’s full. Cons Rooms a little tired. Hotel lift slow and 1 lift covers a lot of rooms. Parking free if room booked directly through hotel website but otherwise £12/ day. Wi-Fi not good. Wouldn’t work properly. We booked directly through the hotel website, securing free parking. Upon checking in, the receptionist said we needed to pay £12 parking. I said we’d booked directly through the but she waved a piece of paper at me, said “You booked through Expedia - it’s all down here” and again told me I owed £12. Again, I said I booked directly through the, she told me I was wrong so my friend paid £12 and we were able to get our room cards. Her attitude wasn’t great towards us. The following morning, I had found my booking confirmation - made directly through the hotel as I said - and returned to reception for a refund. Without checking my confirmation she said another guest - Jamie Wilkinson - had checked in after me and our bookings had been mixed up and me charged instead of him. Then she said she didn’t know how to refund cash until a colleague told her to just give us cash back. Up to this point, there had been no effort to contact us and refund our parking charge.

Positive experience: The hotel position was perfect, the room was lovely, only negative thing was being told it was either 08.45 or 10.30 for breakfast , clearly on a first come first served where breakfast is concerned but would stay again

Fantastic experience: We came by train so took us a little while to get our bearings and figure out where it was but once there we had an amazing time the staff were wonderful nothing was too much trouble, the food in the restaurant was amazing ( I'm still telling people about the feta melon and pomegranate salad) the room was clean and comfortable and we just had a lovely time would recommend and would stay again.

Fantastic experience: We have stayed here for the past few days, we actually stayed last year both times we have been the staff have been fantastic from reception and bar staff to servers and cleaners they assisted with a professional attitude, the rooms where always clean and tidy and stocked up with teas and coffee as well as biscuits, the staff in the gym/swimming pool where just as helpful and lovely, we really didn't want to leave the beds both times we have been where always clean and so comfortable, the breakfast buffet was always full of food and never had to wait log for everything to be refilled, and the drinks especially the cocktails where always nice and refreshing

Negative experience: If I could have given it 0 stars I would. The reception staff are absolutely awful, the bar staff are clueless, and God knows what the cleaners are asked to clean as bathrooms were covered in dust and hair in the bath! Reception/bar area looks nice but after that it may as well just be a premier inn. I've stayed in a nicer and certainly much cleaner b and b for a lot less money in Blackpool so they certainly need to up their game if they want to keep making out they are a luxury hotel. Paid extra to upgrade and the room was dark, dingy and dusty just with a standard double bed. Couldn't hardly see the so called canal view as the windows were filthy. The restaurant staff and the spa staff were much nicer and helpful thankfully. The spa/pool is nice. Breakfast was nice but again nothing luxury about it and lack of choice for non cooked breakfast items disappointed many diners. Will never return, will stick to small companies who take pride in their establishments from now on as big companies clearly don't care. Be prepared to have to go looking, and talking to people to find things and places as you are given absolutely no information and reception haven't a clue even stating..."The Mill Spa is a totally separate business so we don't know anything about it you would have to call them and ask" Took me 11 minutes to get my drink after paying for it at the bar because I dared to ask for a cocktail that was clearly too much effort for the barmaid.

Fantastic experience: Stayed here for my birthday last week and it was amazing! Breakfast was amazing, beds are comfortable, we had facilities like sauna and swimming pool, steam room. The staff were lovely and helpful. House keeping were good too! Definitely coming back next year

Positive experience: Parking - Car park opposite, be prepared to pay £12 a day. If you go over the alloted time, ie 12pm departure it's £5 per hour. Room - Like many others have stated, the rooms are ok but need updating. Tea/coffee in the room clean and tidy. Food/drink - Bar and restaurant are ok but you are spoilt for choice around the immediate area. Venture out there's plenty to see. Service - i must have got a grumpy woman on reception, she was in a right mood, she well...good old English customer service at its best eh. Everyone has off days and I am in no way customer focused when I used to work. Hotel is ok to be honest and had a pleasant stay. Just don't think it's the Savoy.

Fantastic experience: First time staying at The Mill it was great lovely room great pool and sauna steam and jacuzzi . Had an issue while parking my car with a local who threatened to damage my car told the manager who let me park on staff car park under the camera which was a lovely thing to do many thanks will definitely be coming back and be recommending to friends and family

Positive experience: Lovely hotel and good value for money. Excellent location if you need to use buses to get around - few minutes walk away for bus station. Very close to the main town as well. Lovely outlook.over canal. Our only criticism would be breakfast - although very good and staff lovely - it did get a bit samey for four days. Would have been nice to have option of boiled eggs etc., for a change but the fried breakfast was hot, well cooked and constantly re-supplied. Well done Well Hotel and Spa for a great stay in a great location.

Fantastic experience: The service was impeccable, however, there is an issue that arose the following morning during breakfast for myself and my partner. Unfortunately, the breakfast was not up to par. The hash browns lacked the expected flavor, and the scrambled eggs had an excessive amount of water. I must commend the customer service for their prompt action in refunding the car parking ticket, which was greatly appreciated. On my final day, I visited the spa and encountered a slight inconvenience. The lady at the spa initially had difficulty locating my name on the list and questioned if I was indeed a guest at the hotel. Despite assuring her that I had been staying there for a few days, she remained skeptical. I kindly reminded her that there should have been an update regarding my spa reservation when I signed in. The housekeeping services were exceptional, and the level of service provided was outstanding.

Negative experience: The hotel was nice but did not match the price, the spa was excellent but the price, quality and parking is atrocious. £180 for 1 night on the creakiest rickety bed, dusty room, no ironing facility, dimly lit room with the choice of all light or complete darkness. If you don't book directly you got to pay an extortionate amount for parking somewhere you've already paid above and beyond to stay. If you're not interested in a spa and don't mind a low end room go somewhere else.

Positive experience: The hotel restaurant food & staff are amazing. The room was clean. We upgraded to a canal view room only to find the window was small & with me being 5'ft 2 I had to stand on a chair to see it. We went to reception to comment on it & say we were not happy & they receptionist said its not our fault you are short!! I wasn't impressed. The other lady on reception ( Jane was lovely though & very friendly & knowledgeable.

Fantastic experience: The next time we want to break up a journey into Wales or want to have a weekend break in beautiful Chester I highly recommend The Mill Hotel & Spa. Positive experience: Holiday with a friend who needed me to assist her at times, therefore rooms requested close by. Discovered my room was in another hotel building! Took sometime to sort this matter out and get rooms neat each other. Walking at night required lengthy detours to avoid the adjacent underpass. Great staff.

Positive experience: Great location, an easy walk into the town centre and 15 min drive from Chester Zoo. Parking available on site at extra charge. Extremely efficient breakfast service. The rooms are a little basic and tired in my opinion and ours didn’t match the website photos. No way of drying towels to save on washing and no storage in the bathroom for toiletries. The staff are very accommodating and cheerful. Would stay again.

Negative experience: The Canalside Hotel is a 10 to 15 minute stroll from both the Railway Station and the Town Centre. The rooms require a complete refurbishment. The Television kept flickering and losing its picture. The very few hangers in wardrobe were too big to fit inside, The room had no safe., The bathroom was tired with an extremely noisy ineffective fan. There was no walk in shower just a bath with an inefficient shower attachment. The soap dispenser was archaic and did not work properly. no toilet brush. Breakfast was very disappointing a buffet greasy cooked breakfast with supermarket cheap bread pre toasted and hard. If you did not want a cooked breakfast no choice as no fresh bread, cheese or ham and other meats. The coffee was barely drinkable. Only one lift not enough for a hotel of this size The only savings grace was the staff who were great both at reception and in the restaurant and could not be faulted

Negative experience: Dissappointing stay... Room was dark with inadequate lighting for a kingsize double. With a weird single bed which was supposed to be sofa, which you couldnt sit on? We had to put up with the noise of a bathroom extractor fan that would not turn off all night and a tv with no real signal. No toiletries and lacks a real bathroom mirror to do make up. The shower was from the 1980s and usless. Not what I expected returning to chester after 30 years. Staff are nice and pleasant. However not concerned by complaint regarding the room. Overall below average accommodation is noisey and uncomfortable. Needs rooms updating. Should have booked a travel lodge.

Fantastic experience: I haven't even left the hotel yet and I am writing a honest review. I came Wednesday 18th till Friday 20th September I can't fault my stay here atall. My first solo time away and it's been the best experience. Breakfast - a basic full English buffet and i found it very nice. They have cereals, yoghurt, tea, coffee and juices. Could not fault it. Spa treatment - I got a top facial that lasted 50 minutes and lottie was absolutely amazing. I am still actually glowing. Thank you so much lottie. Also big shout out to the spa staff. I didn't get the guys name on reception at the spa but were credit is due this guy is exceptional to his team and his patience, smile and overall service has been a pleasure. Pool area - was never overcrowded. The pool was slightly cold but I guess you needed that as the steam and sauna was hot (just how we like it though? The jacuzzi was amazing for helping with my wobbly bits lol. Changing rooms incredible. £1.00 locker but you get that back. If your staying in the hotel you can go down to the pool in your dressing gown. Or like I did hire a dressing gown and slippers for £8.00. Location - lovely pubs on the canal and 4 minute walk around the corner to the city centre and wall. Staff - really professional and well mannered. Make you feel so welcome. Rooms - the rooms are a little outdated but spacious and so relaxing. Bed was so comfy. They have a gym and bar but I didn't use these I'm gutted I've not found this place earlier. Fantastic experience: Only here to talk about the pub. First time visiting, and I was very impressed. Friendly, good service, excellent food, and deals to be had We popped in on the off chance with a group of 3 adults with a teen and a tween in tow. The menu is a little over whelming at first but becomes much simpler after you spot the 2 course option, starter/puddin main, and a drink for a tad over £20, that'll do nicely thanks All the meals were well cooked and presented, combined with deliciousness, and not a single moan. Money well spent, I say. It was very hard to choose the best amongst the dishes, but in the end, we all agreed the morello cherry pie was definitely the pick of the day

Positive experience: We stayed for two nights midweek. The room was reasonably sized with wardrobe, double bed, desk and TV with a tiny ensuite. When we arrived, none of the lights worked, although a maintenance man came up very quickly to sort that out. The room was clean and freshly made up - however, the ensuite was disappointing. There was nowhere to hang towels or clothing, the soap dispenser was empty and the boxing in (or not) of the pipework was unfinished. Having said that, the room and bed were very clean. We had breakfast in the Canaletto restaurant which, though rather drab and dingy, did have a view of the canal. The breakfast was fine, but not fantastic - a hot buffet for the full English was regularly replenished, though didn't stop the fried eggs from bouncing, and there were cereal and tinned fruit options. The staff at Reception and in the restaurant were friendly, helpful and excellent. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the city centre, and despite its proximity to the flyover, it is surrounded by bars and restaurants.

Positive experience: Having stayed there 3 times before, it is a real shame to see this hotel going down hill, the rooms are looking worn, the bed was a double not a king size as claimed, no bottled water and very cheap biscuits in the room. Breakfast has really gone down in both variety and quality, it used to be excellent in both departments. But worst thing is the temperature of the rooms, you cant sleep as they are that hot, no Air Con but a tiny substandard fan that just moves the hot air about, they must know this as they leave the fan on before you check in. No real love shown to hotel which is a real shame. I'm sure I will get the standard 2 paragraph cut and paste reply saying "all feedback is appreciated and will be passed on to make improvements" like every other review. Really disappointing don't think we will be staying again.

Fantastic experience: We had an excellent stay. All members of staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful. Leaving the car for 3 days in the free car park was also very welcome as we walked, used public transport and cycled to get around. It was good to have secure storage for the bikes. Room was clean and comfortable. It was also great to have a hotel bar with properly kept cask-conditioned beer as well!

Fantastic experience: The hotel is a great choice for those looking for a comfortable and convenient stay. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the service is excellent. The breakfast is top-class, with a good choice and plenty of it. The hotel also has an excellent bar. The location is great, within walking distance of Chester and with the added advantage of an on-site car park.

Positive experience: A good, centrally located hotel for staying over for the races and visiting Chester itself. The rooms are a little dated but still had all of the amenities you would need for a short stay. The bar is well stocked and backs onto the canal where there is seating if the weather is nice. There are pool and spa facilities available but we didn’t use them, they are in an adjoining building, accessible over the connected bridge to the hotel. Breakfast was buffet style and was really good, absolutely no complaints there! Parking is across from the front of the hotel, charged through the front desk on arrival. Good place to stay and can recommend for a short city break.

Fantastic experience: A lovely hotel. Greeted by an absolute gentleman who explained the parking situation, then later showed us to the pool / spa. The room was slightly warm for me but that is the only fault. Clean, huge bed, a decent breakfast, excellent location and special mention to the aforementioned member of staff who was so helpful (possibly the manager) and to the fella from Liverpool who without exception gave every single guest a warm, friendly and jovial welcome to the restaurant...a guy who took real pleasure in his job and is a credit to the hotel.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely fantastic weekend here with mates for my 50th. Everyone thought the hotel was superb. All the staff were really friendly and helpful, the rooms were excellent, the breakfasts brilliant, the service impeccable, and the location was perfect! We also had the pool area to ourselves on Saturday which was a great place to chill out for a couple of hours before heading back into town. Can’t recommend highly enough and we’ll definitely be back.

Negative experience: It comes to something when you haven’t even left the hotel yet but have chosen to write this review. I was surprised with a birthday weekend trip from my partner to have a relaxing spa day. We had both travelled nearly 3 hours to arrive at the hotel and 3 hours before the treatments were booked, we was called to say they were cancelled. We was only given the choice to select 1 treatment each and have them at different times, which defeated the purpose of this being a birthday couples retreat when we had booked several to be performed at the same time. These treatments were also booked in advance months prior to our stay and the reason we was given to them being cancelled is “a staff member pulled a sickie”, which makes you wonder as to what the ‘sickie’ was caused from on a Sunday morning. Essentially this has ruined my whole birthday weekend and left myself in the middle of no where with nothing to do with my partner. The breakfast is very limited, there’s a lot of things missing from the full English breakfast style buffet. The buffet consists of roughly 8-10 items to choice from excluding some of the well known choices like mushrooms, black pudding, etc. However the food was cooked very well and is very tasty, just would be nice to have more choice considering the cost. The rooms are fairly pleasant, however they are alittle warm and you can hear through the walls. Mattress is firm and comfortable, pillows are very basic which very little head support. Overall I am at a satisfactory standard with the room and food as minor things wouldn’t ruin a trip for me, However the spa did offer me and my partner free treatments when we checked out and spoke to them before leaving. We wasn’t able to have these as we was leaving, so we was given a goodie bag of Elemis products.
Negative experience: Rooms far too warm and no ventilation, also looking tired. Breakfast, instant coffee not fresh, buffet style hot food scrambled eggs covered in water, fried eggs gone hard under lights and bacon either overcooked or anemic. At £100 per night I would avoid.

Fantastic experience: Had a three night stop over here what an absolutely wonderful hotel, staff were very helpful and friendly food was delicious met a lot of people that were regulars and that is definatly a good sign. Just 4 mins walk along the canal and you arrive in the city center and what an awsome city Chester is if you haven't visited then you should.

Positive experience: Secured a great deal on agoda, b&b here. Room was quite large, facing a dual carriageway into/from the city centre. Some noise with the window open and the usual creaky floorboards for an old property. Lift quite small so we used the stairs. Bed very comfortable and some nice industrial style fittings to be in keeping with its mill heritage. Breakfast was fine, a little busy despite the booking system . Sausage and bacon need a bit of an upgrade, local butcher perhaps, as quite generic. Carpark £12, despite advertising as £9 on the booking, which is a little tight but seemed secure. Nice walk into city centre, perhaps 8 minutes. Hotel us next to the canal.

Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel with friendly staff. The bar staff in particular were very accommodating, making us cocktails that weren't necessarily on the menu. We will definitely consider staying again during our many trips to Chester. However one of the reasons we chose this place was the swimming pool but unfortunately we were unable to use the pool because it was "at capacity" and they were operating a "one out/one in system" meaning we would have had to sit in the waiting area for someone to leave before we were allowed in. Fantastic experience: Swimming pool, sauna, and jacuzzi brilliant. Free. Part of booking. Had a signature body massage, paid Fantastic. Hotel was in walking distance to where and what we wanted to see, the wall, boating, restaurants, etc. Bus station close, caught bus to go to the zoo. Had a couple of meals in the hotel, have to book, very good. Chester racecourse was on at the time we went, still lovely atmosphere. Please try and book the hotel directly, then you don't have to pay parking charges as we did as we booked through a 3rd party. It doesn't mention this on the website until you've booked. Live and learn. Would still go again.

Positive experience: Well I would rate the overall stay at this hotel as 3 star and not the 4 star that is advertised. Staff were friendly. Location of hotel is on both sides of the canal. Spa needs again TLC . Strange how you have to go downstairs to the pool with no lift but in the changing rooms they had a disabled shower with a seat . Pool was ok but again TLC needed. Steam room was very hot. Jacuzzi was good but quite steep to get in and out of. Only one changing room in ladies area. Need a £1 for lockers.. Not enough lifts. Food was good didn’t eat evening meals so can’t comment. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Car park was £9 to stop . View from room was good in a club room but please read comment about rooms below. The whole hotel needs some updating but still had a nice stay . Stopped in better hotels for the money we paid offering the same things, with air conditioning.

Breakfast was busy not too long wait Food was great and plenty full topped up quickly great stay staff were excellent.will be back

Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel, Clean rooms, helpful staff. Car parking was a little strange but perfectly fine.

Positive experience: I admit to being a fan of old Mills being converted into hotels, the exposed brickwork and beams, uneven floors, corridors that may or may not lead anywhere and the fascination with half the place harshly lit, and the rest almost in darkness. The Mill follows this template unashamedly. The grumbles; Room was advertised as a double but it was two singles pushed together, as if we wouldn't notice. If using the spa, ladies have to pay £1 for a locker, yet it was free for men? Also, the wife had a surprise that the changing rooms were open and only one enclosed. Soundproofing is minimal as the nearby road rattled the room and one guest thought the entire floor would like to hear her conversation at 7am. To be fair to the hotel, they twice went to try and quieten her, but it did highlight the acoustics of the place. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel is in a good location and quite clean.

Fantastic experience: This was mine and my fiancée’s first time visiting the hotel & we absolutely loved it & will definitely be returning. We were able to check in just after 2pm as our room was ready early. The room was spacious, clean and had a comfortable bed. There was the option of an additional plug in heater and a fan which was a great touch to the room. The pool facilities were brilliant & to use them (swimming pool, sauna/steam room & jacuzzi) is at no extra charge for guests at hotel. Towels are provided when using the pool & there is a changing room / locker facilities to use, which were very well maintained and clean. We were able to choose a time slot for breakfast, it was a buffet style breakfast and there were enough options to choose from so there’s something for everyone. The food was topped up fresh regularly. The restaurant was bigger than expected with plenty of seats available. The staff were all lovely & polite, particularly the staff at the spa reception. Overall our stay was brilliant value for money and an enjoyable experience. The hotel has beautiful decor and is in an ideal location when visiting Chester. We can’t wait to come back again.

Positive experience: Nice large deluxe room with views of the canal. Room was a touch warm for my liking and a tiny window opener to bring in fresh air. Breakfast was tasty and staff were bright friendly and welcoming. We asked for a little extra checkout time and this was no issue for the hotel.
Fantastic experience: Just had 2 nights here with my partner. No complaints at all, parking on site, clean rooms, excellent breakfast, good bar prices. A shout out to the young man who greeted us in the dining room and took us to our table, he was an absolute joy
Positive experience: Hotel was nice, parking is extra, but they do have plenty of parking. The spa was ok, pool was nice, steam room, sauna was out of order. We had breakfast that was good , buffet, plenty of seating, staff were very nice. Checking was easy, didnt wait. Room was comfortable, reasonable price. Well equipped.
Positive experience: Could not check in till 3.00pm, no early check in, so of cause there was a wait at 3. Staff nice and helpful. Our room was in the new part across the bridge, top floor nice and quite, all so a good size and clean Breakfast good but a wait for table even tho' allocated time slot. Other meals cannot say as ate out. Parking can't see why you after pay £9 just because you book with agent.
Positive experience: 5* hotel staff All the staff where lovely and helpful. 3* night sleep Could hear crack heads outside fighting all night and pigeons early in the morning. Pillows where old and terrible. The "double bed" was two singles pushed together. 2* breakfast Bacon was boiled and scrambled eggs where pale and watery. I couldn't tell you what they tasted like as I didn't want to risk my life. The croissants, OJ and cereal was fine. 3* Spa The room in-between the changing rooms and pool stank of piss. Decent size pool and small hot tube. Both seemed clean.
Positive experience: Stayed two nights at The Mill & we were generally happy without being bowled over. The site is a little bit higgledy-piggledy in that the main car park is across the road from the hotel, then the hotel itself is dissected by a canal, so both halves of the hotel are joined together by a bridge. The room was ok but we have had better at this price point. There was a raised screw on the bathroom threshold & the TV bracket had started to come away from the wall holding a heavy 32 inch TV on it. We noticed it was very dusty behind the TV. Not good & these issues were pointed out to reception when checking out. Toilet seat in room didn’t stay up when pushed up. Breakfast was ok we didn’t use the restaurant for any other meals. The gym, pool, jacuzzi, steam & sauna were all decent. Female gym/pool lockers require £1 coins, Gents either need a padlock of your own or you can hand in your room key for a locker key in exchange. We found the lifts in the hotel to be rather slow all round & it was quicker to just take the stairs. Proximity to central Chester is pretty good, Tesco supermarket is a short walk away down the canal for any supplies you may need.
Positive experience: Well first of all its a Yes to the pool area facilities and staff. Little restaurant is comfortable with great food & service. Large restaurant we went today for mothers day. Service good food awful. Fatty beef & hard roasties of which you only get 2. Love the Mill but won't be using the dining area again. Sorry.
Positive experience: The food was OK but not special. The staff were good and friendly and the service was very good. The building is interesting and there's a good bar.
Positive experience: The rooms were a bit outdated, the shower was not high enough for taller people, the parking arrangements were complicated as even though we paid for parking there was no space. That being said the staff were polite and friendly, spa was very nice, the location was convenient, tv in the room and the breakfast was decent for a buffet.
Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel, food, rooms, service and staff! Secure private parking in the city centre was a bonus! Great location for exploring Chester..we highly recommend and look forward to a return visit.
