Village Gym Portsmouth

Negative experience: Bought a Groupon to try this gym and pool for 4 sessions and was looking forward to using the facilities and trying it out before committing to a membership. Called to book and the receptionist just said they weren't accepting it (still within the expiry) and to get a refund from Groupon. No alternative was offered. Guess they aren't interested in my membership.

Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel. Everything you could need and the rooms are seen ro every day. Excellent gymnasium and swimming pool and the bar/grill is quality

Negative experience: Awful experience at this gym, I won't be going back!! Staff need a course in customer relations!

Negative experience: Really awful gym experience. The staff are really confrontational and unwelcoming. Refused to provide me with head office details and told me to google it myself. Just not a nice overall experience.

Negative experience: Cancelling the membership is impossible unless you pay an extra 3 months, just cancel Dd and let them threaten you, they can’t do anything.

Negative experience: I have been into the gym twice to cancel my membership, I have been told TWICE by a member of staff to say that this will be cancelled and my last payment is October. At no point did they mention I had to give a 90 days notice, NINETY DAYS?? Is village gym now a broadband company who will not let you go without robbing your money for another 3 months? Honestly ridiculous. I then find out that you can’t actually cancel in the gym and have to do it via the phone / app, so what was that member of staff doing? I left village gym because it is far too expensive for me and now they want another £132 out of me.

Fantastic experience: Only ever had food & a drink here but always chilled & a nice atmosphere. Food is decent. Staff are friendly.

Fantastic experience: Gym is fantastic, loads of good high quality equipment. Pool is very nice and so are the showers. Sauna/steam room were also really nice. The food at the bar was mediocre, price did not reflect this as it was quite expensive for the quality of the food.

Fantastic experience: Great gym, great classes love trip on a Tuesday with Kelly Hatch, not only that always very helpful if I need help with my membership. Made some great friends from the social events too .

Fantastic experience: The staff are friendly, everything is clean, the pool is always initially quite cold. The Aquafit class with Jennifer is fantastic fun and a really good workout. I use the wet room afterwards, as I struggle with the stairs, it’s very well laid out and I feel safe with the grab rails and a chair.

Fantastic experience: The staff are lovely, the pool and changing rooms are very clean, feels like a spa. The gym is well equipped and feels airy and the classes are good fun as well as relaxing depending on what you prefer.

Fantastic experience: Great gym, great atmosphere worth every penny.

Negative experience: Truly the worst customer service I’ve ever received. Scammed me out of a 40 pound membership, didn’t active my account, and have now been chasing it up for over 2 months with no response or a single member of staff willing to help. Don’t sign up here unless you want to throw away money and get ignored for months :)

Fantastic experience: Visited this morning to check out membership as well as the gym, pool and spin studio. Kelly gave us a tour and discussed the membership options. Really nice as she wasn't pushy at all. Managed to everything sorted this afternoon and gym induction is now booked. Thanks so much for your help, looking forward to getting fit at Village Gym, Portsmouth

Negative experience: There’s one night I went to the gym cuz it shows 24 hr on their google maps, but when I went there , the door to the gym is closed, I couldn’t get it to open so I asked for help, the staff was not happy to help me, I can literally see she rolled her eyes. After I finally get in, the changing room was locked! What a joke, the staff should have told me that before she let me in, so I went down stairs again to ask for help, and she’s not there anymore. Really poor service and really bad experience!

Negative experience: Gym facilities are basic to say the least here and kit is limited. The plus point are the showers in the changing room, very nice rain shower!

Fantastic experience: I have been a member at Village Gym Portsmouth for many years now and cannot fault them. Instructors and staff always take their time to get to know the members and I always come away from the classes feeling happy and that I've also been encouraged to work hard. During lockdown the Village team ensured all members were taken care of and it is such a pleasure to feel part of the Village Gym Portsmouth family. I truly treasure the friendships I have made while being a member both with staff and other members. We all look out for each other and it's made such a big difference in my life, helping me feel cared for and keep me physically and mentally strong. Thank you xx

Fantastic experience: I have been a member of Village gym Portsmouth for 5 years and wouldn’t entertain the thought of joining another gym. There is a wide range of excellent classes with first class instructors. Ali Liddell teaches a wide variety of excellent classes and is a lovely caring person and always on hand to make sure things run smoothly. Kelly Hatch is in charge of the membership team and always in hand to sort out any problems or queries we have. Altogether a very well run gym with an excellent range of classes and social events.

Negative experience: Got a multi site membership. Used many different ones all over the uk. This the poorest quality. And the bar staff are very weird individuals. No proper service they are very robotic and not the most switched on people. Won’t be ordering food in there again. The actual gym itself isn’t up to the standard of the other sites, although the steam room and sauna are good as consistently high temperatures.

Negative experience: If I could rate this gym 0 I would really bad experience wouldn’t recommend save your money

Negative experience: Left the gym 5 months ago to join elsewhere due to how busy it became with them constantly onboarding new members with no member cap, tried to cancel membership with reception but was told this isn't possible and it must be done online, tried doing it online but the account simply doesn't work and nobody is willing to help despite messaging people who work there. I have already paid nearly £250 in the 5 months I haven't been at the gym and even when it is cancelled there is a 3 month notice period. Do not sign up, terrible service, limited equipment/useless machines, massively oversubscribed for the size of the facility.

Positive experience: I came here last night with a group of friends witch I haven't seen for awhile to be disappointed in the dirty dancing tribute they was absolutely rubbish the disco was better the food was lovley but over priced on drink

Negative experience: very dirt floors walls and ceilings. not properly cleaned or looked after. Very well equipped facility however. And to add on was 22£ for a day pass which is quite expensive for a facility that is not cleaned regularly.

Fantastic experience: I had my first day at the gym today and the sign in process was done by Amy! She was super helpful and got me on the best available deal within 10 minutes! Quickest and easiest gym membership I’ve had!! I would definitely recommend also the gym has all the latest machines and great facilities.

Positive experience: Staff are great, with plenty of equipment, and having the app helps you see how busy it is in there. My biggest problem is the number of people that come out of the stem room, sauna, and jump straight in the poo drenched in sweat even though there is a sign saying please shower between using the sauna/steam room pool and jacuzzi. I feel the staff should be picking this up and reminding them of the process of using the shower between rooms, jacuzzi, and pool. it's horrible when you are trying to have a swim and having to swim in someone else sweaty oil slick.

Fantastic experience: Great facilities. The pool is clean and the staff are sampling regularly. The changing rooms are separate for male and female and are always kept clean. The cleaners are great and you can see them cleaning the gym and the facilities in general throughout the day. The staff at the gym are great and always happy to help. The only thing i woud change is the cleanliness of the stairs leading to the pool. The staff do clean daily and very often however it may require a different chemical due to people walking barefoot. Overall i am very pleased and i hoghly recommend it.

Negative experience: Nice staff and nice food. I didn't get any sleep though. I stayed in room 227 on 5/3/24. There was this weird deep banging sound which lasted until about 10pm at night then restarted again at 5am. It sounded like someone was down the hall way and would occasionally jump up and down very loudly. It wasn't human, I think. but god knows what it was. Elevator? People moving and stacking stuff? I'm on the 2nd floor. Really couldn't work it out. I had many waking hours to think about it. In addition to this there was something which was making the glass slider door vibrate endlessly. At 6am I started hearing what sounded like a large washing machine turn on in the distance. Around the edges of the room was very dusty, and some parts of the wall just falling off. Overall, it was a bad experience I was expecting a lot more. I will ask my company not to book me into this place in future if I come to pompey.

Fantastic experience: Clean and tidy with lovely staff. Tasha and Ellen in Starbucks were very helpful and patient as I’m not a usual Starbucks go-er… they recommended me a drink and it was lovely.

Fantastic experience: Tried the 3 day pass. Staff were great. They have new equipment. Only annoying thing is the 6 min timer in the jacuzzi. 6 min on 6 min off.

Positive experience: Seems to be a decent place, however we arrived to chill out in the jacuzzi and sauna. The jacuzzi was not working and the sauna was packed with people, so we had a bit of a swim in the pool and went away. Was not worth the £18 pp we paid for a day pass.

Fantastic experience: Very modern equipment, friendly and helpful staff, the pool is great as well. I think it's a bit more expensive than it should be though, even with a student discount it's still more expensive than other gyms in the area.

Fantastic experience: I use this Portsmouth Village Hotel regularly for business trips, the service has been one of the best of all of the UK locations I have stayed in. The service here by Jimmy and his team is always very accommodating and deliver great service. I had a disruption on one of my stays and Jimmy was understanding and a great General Manager and this clearly showed through his team! Will certainly visit again.

Fantastic experience: This is the best gym in the area hands down. Alex is always on hand to help and is PROACTIVE in consistently improving the gym. Ell, Sammie and Lou always make the start of the day a little brighter at breakfast. They do all they can to help and are friendly faces to see in the mornings.

Negative experience: Always busy. The swimming pool is just tiny, always busy, its a pain swimming at the lane as you constantly hit the person nearby, pointless to take a child with you, they cannot use gym, sauna or a hot tub, I got 3 free guest passes but was never told they are valid only for 3 months, when wanted to use it was expired, so embarassing, you need to give 3 months notice if you want to cancel but in fact you will be charged for 4 months anyway, cancelling is also not straightforward, after filling the cancelation form you need to wait few days for the phone call to confirm you really want to cancel, feeling so cheated

Positive experience: Had a visit to the village hotel for a meeting? I thought I would go and check out the gym. Was quite impressed with the gym and the layout. Nice and spacious and the machines count your reps. The only thing for me personally that has let this down is the size of the swimming pool. I thought it would be a bit bigger apart from that. Staff was friendly enough to show me around.

Negative experience: Done a day pass to use the pool today before signing up to this gym me and my girlfriend walked in and was instantly made to feel uncomfortable by one of the staff members (the lady with short brown hair), couldn’t take her eyes off us as soon as we walked into the room making us feel like we shouldn’t be there , we went to sit down to chill out my girlfriend checked the time on her phone not realising it was a no phone policy the lady rudely came straight over within seconds telling us there are children in the pool? like we are going to start filming children in the swimming pool!! There was no need to say that she could have just stated it was a no phone zone and continued to watch us after she had said this (must have had a starring problem!) also the pool was freezing and jacuzzi wasn’t any better will not recommend or be returning !!! 0/10

Positive experience: I attended at a busy time, 5.p.m., so lots of people working on lots of kit. But I got a good workout in. The gym is well stocked with dumbbells and benches as well as a good smattering of core training machines. Light, airey and spacious for a nice comfortable workout.

Negative experience: Decent gym with all its clean facilities and good parking however the Technogym line up of machines are quite awful some of there machines can’t go wrong like the cable machines and tricep dips but every other one isn’t that great compared to other brands, Technogym machines are at the bottom of the food chain compared to other gym brands that most commercial gyms have due to the fact that they’re not built and designed correctly where you can’t feel your muscle that’s it’s supposedly designed for to be working. For example the leg curl needs a pad to clamp your thighs down to really isolate the effort and strength needed to work your legs and the chest press machine dosent converge meaning you’re not working your chest as much most of the time it’s your arms . No back machines not enough benches too and overall quite a small gym so it gets packed very quickly. It’s possible to build muscle and lose weight here but with its poor line up you’re paying for the other facilities like the steam room and pool etc. Staff are a bit iffy but they’re okay most of the time. Contracted membership also is annoying due to the fact that you have to pay 3 months when you request to leave. I’m not saying don’t go here but if you’re purely going to the gym to get bigger then maybe look around.

Negative experience: Horrendous service, information not given at time of joining about swiping membership card or even shown outside studio. Information incorrectly given about class bookings and towel use. Felt just wanted my membership money. 90% of time could never book classes. Did an induction for gym but never uploaded to my app after several times asking gave up. Customer Service appalling. Walked out of 2 studio classes as so clicky not for newbies, got made to feel very uncomfortable in these classes, treated like an outsider. Definitely would not recommend this Gym, so many more nicer environment and better run for booking classes in the area. Don't be fooled by the layout of the gym and the sales talk when you look around, its all sales to get you to join up they really do not care about members. If they offer you vouchers for recommended by a friends, FALSE, 3 months membership never got these. Shows how they value the Gym they cancel your membership straight away as you have to give 3 months notice, so not much confidence really that you would want to stay.

Positive experience: Facilities are good. It can get very busy in the gym. Hotel roo. Was clean and modern. Bar is good,but is more aimed at food.

Negative experience: Absolute stinking customer service at Portsmouth today. Having taken my 2 sons swimming, as I regularly do most weekends I parked up and entered the gym using my pass. On entering I was asked my oldest sons age (he is 6). This was not a problem, I’ve been asked before and I’m sure I’ll be asked again. Although he’s not yet 7, I pay extra for him to be an addition on my membership, as well as paying for the multi club option, £107 in total. We passed through, I changed my 2 and 6 year old boys and headed to the pool. Only after we were changed and had been in the pool 10 minute or so was I told that the kids session had finished a while back and I needed to leave the pool. Now, this wouldn’t have been an issue if I had been told this when arriving at the gym reception. They certainly had enough time whilst completing their due diligence and ensuring I wasn’t trying to sneak in one of my boys without paying. But having spend a good 15 minute trying to wrangle my boys into swimwear. Speaking to the young man at the pool, I enquired as to why I was being told when already being in the pool rather than at reception, whilst being interrogated about my membership?? Unfortunately he did not have an answer for me. I told him after the inconvenience, I wished to let my boys swim for 30minutes and I’d jump out and go. This wasn’t a good enough answer for the staff member who went and grabbed ‘Kim’ the rudest and most jumped up representative of your company I’ve ever had to deal with. Her first question to my was a blunt ‘what’s the problem’. Having already explained once, I continued to explain again, but unfortunately Kim felt talking at me rather than to me was going to make my feel differently about the initial failings of the reception staff. I was then threatened with the option of being removed by security. They never turned up, I’m assuming they didn’t have their swim shorts. However Kim did return with another member of staff, who once again I had to explain the conundrum I found myself in. Now you’d think after their initial failings, maybe one of their staff members could of given me the 30 minutes I had asked for. After all, it’s a right pain in the arse changing two young kids on your own only to find it was a complete waste of time, once dripping wet. 3 staff clearly had time to stand around the pool deal this the most serious issue (let’s remember, an issue initially caused by staff members before it happened) This situation could of been avoided if the staff at the gym reception turned my away at the point of entry. As I mentioned, they had enough time to check their watches whilst running through my membership with a fine tooth comb. Well done Kim and Co, your customer service skills towards paying members are atrocious.

Fantastic experience: A good place to have cool swimming in Portamouth. Hot thub, steam room and sauna. No previous booking required. And awesome membership plans available.

Negative experience: They said that if I give a 3-month notice before becoming a member, we will cancel your membership. I sent a cancellation notice email 2 weeks ago because I moved my business from Portsmouth to Southampton and can no longer use it. Then they told me that they can't cancel my membership. If they say it's okay to cancel during your membership, don't believe them and I suggest you ask for a written proof.

Positive experience: Great Gym, if you weren’t a student it may not be that affordable for some people but they’re running offers at the moment for teachers, and emergency services to have a discounted rate. On site Starbucks. Pub and Grill but I don’t think I would eat there I haven’t enjoyed the food there and it’s very overpriced but gym members get 25% off Pub and Grill. Lots of varieties of machines and very modern. Not many Les Mill options compared to Pure Gym but still good as they have the proper Les Mill Bar equipment. LOTS of free parking.
